Thermal Energy Networks are matriced assemblies of pipes and heat pumps where buildings can not only utilize the heat from the ground beneath us, but repurpose heat from the buildings around us to make certain we're not wasting anything. And, because of that, these systems may be a super efficient and cost effective means to decarbonize large swaths of cities and neighborhoods.Paul sits with Matt Rusteika, Director of Market Transformation at the Building Decarbonization Coalition, to talk about these emerging networks, why they show so much promise, and what's holding them back, so far, from a scaled up, mass roll-out.For further research:Matt RusteikaNeighborhood Scale: The Future of Building DecarbonizationBuilding Decarbonization Coalition WebinarFollow Paul on LinkedIn.

My guest on the show today is William Crossland, President & CEO of Thermal Energy International, Inc. (TSX-V: TMG) (OTCQB: TMGEF). Thermal Energy International Inc. provides energy efficiency and emissions reduction solutions to Fortune 500 and other large multinational companies. The company's value proposition is to help save their customers money by reducing their fuel use and cutting their carbon emissions. Thermal Energy's proprietary and proven solutions can recover up to 80% of energy lost in typical boiler plant and steam system operations while delivering a high return on investment with a short, compelling payback, according to the company's website. As William jokes in the interview, Thermal Energy is a 20-year overnight success story. When he joined the company and took over as CEO in 2009, William's focus was turning a profit, where, just before the pandemic, was able to accomplish that, 30% compounded annual growth rate and $25 million in revenues. While the pandemic was difficult for all of us, the company had to fight through a challenging environment, which we discuss in the interview, but has since started reporting, in the last few months, more projects and orders coming in. For example, since recording the interview, Thermal Energy announced a, "$3.7 Million Heat Recovery Order from One of Europe's Largest Food and Drink Producers" on December 7, 2023. We also discuss: How Thermal Energy works with their multinational client base Their full suite of solutions, and; William's 3-5 year vision for the company For more information about Thermal Energy, please visit: https://www.thermalenergy.com/ This podcast was recorded and is being made available by SNN, Inc. For a building owner, building decarbonization has myriad benefits: lower utility bills, lower maintenance, healthier and more comfortable living. But the barriers to reaching those benefits are large, particularly the high upfront costs and complicated renovation process (many inspections, many permits, coordinating with many contractors). Scale up to trying to decarbonize every building in a city, and the problems scale up, too - each building has its unique challenges to decarbonization, based on location, age, state of repair, and use. But - it turns out that by decarbonizing buildings on a city level, the solutions can scale up, too.In this final installment of our three-part series examining Ithaca, New York's road to full building decarbonization, we are joined by the team of people who are identifying solutions to these pain points in Ithaca. The fourth episode in our series on sustainability strategies of the future examines thermal energy storage. To illustrate, consider hospitals and industrial facilities that use heat pumps to create the large amount of heating hot water needed for their buildings. This type of heat pump can't operate when temperatures dip below 15 degrees, however, and a gas-burning boiler is typically used as back-up. Thermal energy storage provides a carbon-free alternative. In this strategy, the heat pump generates additional heating water during the warmer part of the day and stores it in a thermal energy storage tank. That water can then be used to heat the facility during frigid overnight hours or anytime the temperature dips below 15 degrees and the heat pumps shut down. Conversely, chilled water storage in the summer months enables facilities to shut down their chillers in the hot afternoon hours and cool the building with water saved overnight to shave off peak demand charges. IMEG Director of Sustainability Adam McMillen discusses the challenges, solutions, and many opportunities of this new strategy.

Earth911's Mitch Ratcliffe speaks with Yaron Ben-Nun, Chief Technology Officer at Nostromo, which has introduced a fascinating innovation in commercial building cooling, the IceBrick Thermal-Energy Storage technology. Nostromo is an Israeli startup that recently went public and trades on the Tel Aviv stock exchange under the symbol SMTO. IceBrick can shift the energy demand to prevent spikes in power consumption during the hottest part of the day when air conditioning demand peaks. IceBrick stores cooling energy in the form of ice during off-peak hours and overnight when there is plenty of  generation capacity available. Think of it as storing the converted electricity in ice that can be used for cooling when needed. Unlike battery systems, which are useful for approximately 3,000 cycles of use, or about 10 years and require rare earths and lithium that are currently difficult to recycle, the IceBrick uses water and a glycol formulae to operate without producing any emissions. The system is easily recycled after approximately 20 years of use.Yaron shares the experience of several early customers in Los Angeles, explaining how commercial building owners can lower their energy bills and reduce their building's carbon footprint. He also describes how Nostromo's technology can be applied to reducing the demand on electricity grids to free up energy for EV charging and other critical electrification projects. A hearty steak, an icy smoothie, a chef's special; we enjoy some of our favorite foods, meals, and conveniences thanks to the cold chain—the use of commercial and industrial facilities that store and ship refrigerated and frozen food. But keeping these cold foods at your neighborhood grocer or restaurant is a costly process. Large refrigerators and cold warehouses strain power grids and tax the environment because of their constant demand for energy. James Bell, president and CEO at Viking Cold Solution, explained how the cost of operating freezers can be greatly reduced, food can be better protect food, resiliency can be added, and the environmental impact of the cold chain can be lowered. Using Thermal Energy Storage, Viking Cold combines intelligent controls (cloud-based software, algorithms and sensors) and unique phase change materials to lower the overall cost of power needed to run an industrial freezer. “We use phase change material, otherwise known as PCM,” Bell said. Capable of storing and releasing large amounts of energy, PCM allows businesses to draw energy during low cost periods of the day, store this energy, and circumnavigate costly peak demand power charges. What's more, Thermal Energy Storage is a lifesaver during power loss. Be it a natural disaster or a grid failure, Viking Cold technology provides the temperature stability that can save food from spoiling and prevent enormous loss. “Ultimately it's about economics...quality, and it's also about sustainability and the environment,” Bell said. The net benefits of cold chain technology trickle into all aspects of a business, from protecting the product, decreasing the demand for energy, and building resiliency by reducing reliance on the grid.

Transcript: Heat sometimes seems like a fluid. We talk about heat flowing from one place to another, objects giving off heat, or absorbing heat. Heat is actually a measure of the random disordered motion of microscopic atoms and molecules in a substance. The larger the microscopic random motions, the more the heat. This is called thermal energy, or heat energy, and as in all other forms of energy it is measured in units of joules. The fact that heat can be quantified and is truly a form of energy was shown by James Prescott Joule. In 1840 he did an elegant experiment where he arranged for a falling weight to rotate a paddle in a column of water. The rotating paddle stirred the water up and was able to heat it measurably with a thermometer. Joule deduced that a one pound weight falling through the equivalent of 770 feet was able to heat a specific amount of water by one degree Fahrenheit, thus demonstrating that the gravitational potential energy of the falling weight was being turned into the kinetic energy of the paddle’s motion and then into increased microscopic motions of the molecules of water.
