Metabolic flexibility is the body's ability to utilize different sources of fuel for energy - either glucose and fat, stored body fat or fuel from food. Most people are fueled by glucose because of their poor diet, especially the Standard American Diet. As we age, metabolism also slows down. Our mitochondria decrease in both quality and quantity, affecting our ability to produce energy within the cell. Signs that one is metabolically inflexible are weight gain, cravings between meals, and low energy.One of the top complaints I hear from my midlife women clients is that they are gaining weight around their midsection for no reason. Well, we know there's a reason, it just hasn't been found yet. Women are feeling confused and frustrated as to why they are gaining weight when all other variables haven't changed. They are still eating the same diet, and attending their usual exercise classes, yet, the weight is coming on. With weight gain, comes a slew of other health issues, such as fatigue, disrupted sleep, increased anxiety/depression/stress, joint pain, brain fog, and more. Underneath the hood of weight gain and menopause, women open the door to chronic disease states, such as an increased risk of Alzheimer's, Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Take care of this first as you never know when you'll need to face a challenge and your health will be a saving grace. If you can't do it for yourself or struggle with self-worth, find an excellent coach who can help you around self-worth. Pay more than you normally will so you pay attention. Use the principals of 'The One Thing' (see the episode with Jay Papasan as a reference on this book) and keep your eyes on one thing. Stay in gratitude, especially around the most challenging times. With weight loss, if you struggle with food addiction or addictive foods, keep the triggers out of your house and understand there is no margin of error. Eating, unlike drinking alcohol, is a must.
