Today's episode, “Perseverance: The Virtue of Courage” focuses on the ability to move past fear and why we need it to persevere. Are you ready? The world would have us march to its chaotic beat but God invites us to dance in His will and His way. Let's take a moment to be energized, refreshed, and motivated to face the day, one spin and twirl at a time. Show Notes: Perseverance: Courage When You Don't Have Strength I googled quotes, then images when I began to study for this podcast. Napoleon Bonaparte said, "Courage isn't having the strength to go on, it is going on when you don't have the strength." Wow. Fits how I've felt lately, to be sure. The images I found surprised me though. I was thinking of a lion or soldier. Instead, I found a tightrope walker, someone leaping a wide ravine, a goldfish leaping from his fishbowl into a lake. And only one lion pic. But it wasn't a lion, it was a housecat with a lion's shadow. I needed to readjust my thinking. Instead of courage being something or someone strong or well-trained, courage is the ordinary attempting the extraordinary. All the images I saw were attempts at something way beyond the normal comfort zone. Hmm. Comfort zone. The perfect opposite of courage. I know that fear is probably most thought of as the opposite but for me, maybe for you, the endless search for comfort holds more truth. It is more comfortable and much easier to sit alongside the wall at the dance, sipping a cup of punch, than to put yourself on the dance floor, in front of others, where you might really mess up and fail. Flop. Draw tons of unwanted attention from another error. Do I, do you, really want to take a chance and try to tango when so much is at stake? Like our pride, our reputation, our ability to appear in public. I don't know about y'all, but I can make the tiniest mistake in judgment, like buying a cute butterfly T-shirt and wearing it the next day. What's wrong with that? Only a problem when you get home and notice the clear strip of tape that shouts your size that you forgot to remove when you decided to wear it. I cringe to think how many people wondered about my state of mind. I'd like to say this has only happened once but… Courage. Going on when you don't have the strength. When you're embarrassed. When you've failed. When you're too tired to keep trying. I don't think you can persevere without courage. Every morning when you wake up and decide to face one more day and do the best you can, you're displaying courage. Emails are screaming for answers, the house tends to be messy, the phone constantly rings, and I just want the weekend back. Is that too much to ask? But I'm here at my computer, mustering all the courage I can, to work on the episode and my to-do list. Why? So many times, life seems like an endless Monday. What can help me let go of the weekends of life and move forward when I don't want to? Remember: Why do I do what I do? I write because I can't not write. I clean because I don't like clutter. I love and encourage those around me because I want to be loved in return. Doesn't always happen but God steps in and fills me when others can't or won't. I forget the Mondays when I failed. Flopped. Gave up. I forget the times I didn't measure up to my own expectations. This leads me to number 3. Let go. I release the anger and disappointment I hold against myself for not being perfect. I release bitterness that creeps in when others let me down. I release all my fears and worries and anxious moments to God and take the next step. In faith. Because that's where we find courage. We have faith in the God who tells us we're never alone, never without help, never left behind.

Science, Scriptures and the Supernatural. Monday 19 July This week we are talking about the place of science, scriptures and the supernatural. There is the erroneous belief that science, scriptures and the supernatural don't agree. Some believe if you really believe in science, you cannot believe the account of scripture and the supernatural but that is not true. Bible verses like 1 Tim 6:20, KJV O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Have been misinterpreted to mean science is in opposition to scripture, which is not true. A more accurate interpretation of this verse of scripture can be seen in The Living Bible translation of the same scripture which says; Oh, Timothy, don't fail to do these things that God entrusted to you. Keep out of foolish arguments with those who boast of their “knowledge” and thus prove their lack of it. Professor Allen J. Dunckley, author of the book, "Scripture and Science: Conflict or Confirmation? Gave detailed scientific evidence to show that science actually confirms scriptures and is not contradictory to it. Dr. Henry Morris in his book, “Men of Science, Men of God” a biographical account and testimonies of 101 Christian scientists who believe the Bible and its account of God's creation, disprove the lie that a true scientist cannot simultaneously be a true man or woman of God. This compilation of Christian scientist is from the 15th century to the 20th century, some of the notable Christians in this book can be called founding fathers of different areas in science and they were also very strong Christians. I am convinced that the God of the scriptures is also God of science and the one Who does the supernatural. I pray God would open our minds to understand to see that the God of the bible, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is the same Lord over Science, Scripture and the doer of the supernatural. The three can work together when we yield ourselves to God. God bless you, enjoy the rest of your day.

Mike Kim is a speaker and marketing strategist, and that is putting it lightly, who specializes in brand strategy and copywriting. Well, [00:02:08] Mike Kim: [00:02:08] There's is all of the thank you for having me. Uh, it is a pleasure to be here. I hope to add some value to you today and to all of our listeners. [00:02:15] And I knew you were a good woman of taste Macallan 15 is the way to go. Nothing. [00:02:22] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:02:22] Yeah, absolutely. It's so smooth. Okay. We could, we could talk a whiskey till the cows come home, but let's not do that. Uh, so talk to me about what's going on with you. You have a brand new book you're first coming out. [00:02:36] Tomorrow. Talk to me about you are the brand, which I love as the title. What prompted you to write the book? [00:02:45] Mike Kim: [00:02:45] Well, it's funny. And thank you for allowing me to share a little bit about this. Um, it's funny. Cause I signed a book deal about five years ago. I was supposed to write this book five years ago. My publisher assigned me five years ago and then my, my personal life went sideways, [00:03:00] um, a little bit and I just had no creative energy to write the book. [00:03:03] And, um, every ear that passed since then, you know, I was kind of getting my bearings in life and in business and all that sort of thing. Um, last year happens, right? The quarantines, the lockdowns and everything, you know, I travel a lot. Um, and of course that came, you know, much to a halt and I thought about it. [00:03:27] What am I going to do this year? And I had a friend tell me, because I had done a lot of little things. I've built a lot of programs and stuff like that, but I found myself getting a little frustrated cause I was felt like I was a hamster on the, on the wheel running around and he said to me, Hey, um, you do a lot of things. [00:03:44] You're, you're very busy. You're always kind of moving on the move, but you know, it's really fun to build things, to build things that last a long time. And he's a multiple time bestselling author. And he shared that with me and [00:04:00] said, you know, maybe this is the time you build a book. I mean, you don't have to do it this year, but you know, it's fun to build things, build things that will take in last years. [00:04:10] And I really took that advice to heart. Hunkered down, call my publisher back, hired a book, coach hired several coaches and just started writing. And I was like, if there's anything I walk out of from this year of being locked down because of the current virus and all that, it's going to be a book. And that's, that is the hard and fast truth of it. [00:04:32] I mean, I think there are a lot of books that never make it to the light of day because their authors, uh, decide to give up. Um, and I did that for a while, but, um, I was like, this will be the year that I really, really, you know, put this into play and I'm really glad I did. So that's why I wrote it. [00:04:50] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:04:50] Oh, that's fantastic. [00:04:51] I love it. And here, here, there so much of what you just said made me go high. I have to ask all these questions in here. The, the, the [00:05:00] one that sticks in my head though, is. There is this, this notion that we can, that we can do something, but then there's the imposter that goes, you really can't do this. You, you know, the little voice inside your head, that's tap, dancing and telling you not to. [00:05:17] And it sounds like you had some strategies that allowed you to go, you know what? No, I I've gone through all sorts of infernos and now I'm coming out the other side and I'm going to do that. Did you have a voice inside your head? And if so, what did that voice. [00:05:32] Mike Kim: [00:05:32] The voice. So the biggest, I, you know, there's a lot there. [00:05:37] Um, I would say after I finished the book, uh, but I don't think it was a joke. I was like, this is like the third hardest thing I've ever done in my life. And partially it was because I was writing about a time in my life that was really difficult to revisit. Um, my life turned out very different than I thought it would all those years ago when I first signed this book. [00:05:59] Um, [00:06:00] secondly, my writing style changed over the years because I had been a blogger. I had written stories and you know, a lot of that stuff, but the last five, six years I've really spent more as a copywriter in the marketing space, which is to make sales. And when I sat down to write this book, It was a completely different discipline of writing. [00:06:24] Actually, one of my friends, Karen Anderson, who was, who served as a book coach for me through the process. She's like, she's known me for a long time. She said, Hey, your book has no heart in it. She's like, it's got great facts. The frameworks. It's got great information, but I need some more of your personality in this, right? [00:06:44] The warmth that is, you know, who you are. I need the humor. I need a little bit more story, you know, to contextualize it. In the, in the entire book really is about that journey. From how I reinvented myself, I had walked away from a [00:07:00] pretty established career, stepped into a new career, got a job as the chief marketing officer, as you mentioned for that company. [00:07:06] And then within two years, I left to start my own business. So really that three to four year period of my life was very turbulent. I look back on it now and just like, I don't know how I survived that or what I did. When I look back on what I intuitively did. The good things that I did. That's what made it into the book. [00:07:26] And all these years, since I've tested these frameworks, tested how to coach people in building a personal brand. And I'm actually really glad that the book is coming out now because it is, you know, two grades better than what it would have been five years ago. Um, and you can't mess with the timing. I mean, just in the last year and a half, we've all experienced this locked down and shut down and. [00:07:50] People are really rethinking work. They're working from home a lot more, and it is the perfect time for this book to come out. So I'm very, very grateful [00:08:00] for all those things. But yeah, there were definitely voices that were like, this is a pain. I hate this. This is like slogging through mud. And I just kept on putting one foot in front of the other and doing it. [00:08:09] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:08:09] And you know, it's funny that you say that, that the voices were saying, this is a pain you're going through molasses when you're in the stew, when you're in it. And you're, and you're just like, I just have to put one foot in front of the other. Do you have any practices, anything that you do that goes, okay, I'm going to get my head back in the game. [00:08:28] I'm going to get myself right to do this, or is it just survive at all costs for [00:08:32] Mike Kim: [00:08:32] you? Hmm. Well, one of the things that I really did was, um, stop trying to do it the right way because. When I have all these friends who are authors and they're like, oh yeah, I use this Scrivener program. It's like some software program that people write books in. [00:08:50] Right. And I'm like, okay, fine. I'll use that. Oh yeah. It makes it so easy. And I'm like sitting there on my computer is old and I'm like, I don't know how to use this program. I've never used this before. My job is [00:09:00] not to learn how to use using your program is to write a book. Right. So I stopped doing that. [00:09:04] Then I was like, okay, well I just got to tough it out, but in seat, that's what I heard all the time. BIS, but in C. Get just start writing and then I'd sit down at my computer and I wouldn't write. And I realized it's because I was on my computer all day because the zoom calls. So I hated sitting. On like sitting at my computer, it just, it just drove me crazy. [00:09:26] Right. So then I try to write in, in bed with my laptop and that wasn't good either. Cause I was like, okay, this time. So this is, this is crazy. What I actually did was I took everything out of these, you know, godforsaken programs. Everyone was telling me, you use dumped everything into Google docs and just started writing the book on my phone. [00:09:45] And I would chip away at it. I, I, once I live in Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC right now, and as soon as a couple of places opened back up, you know, bars, restaurants, whatnot, I would go out, I would call an [00:10:00] Uber. I would clack away on my phone and in Google docs in the 20, 30 minutes in the Uber sit down at the bar. [00:10:09] And just collect oil on my phone. And I just chipped away at this thing over the course of like probably nine or 10 months and just kept refining, kept refining, getting, setting it into the editor, getting feedback, you know, refining, refining, refining. And that was really the first and most important thing I had to find out what worked for me and be okay with that. [00:10:33] The second thing I think I really had to do, um, to, to push through that was to, um, create deadlines that I definitely had to stick with. Like I told the publisher, here's the release date I want. I went ahead and had the meeting with the publishers and the, okay. We've all decided it's going to come out July 13th. [00:10:52] Right. I'm like, sure. And I mean, every step of the way, they're like, we cannot print your book. If you don't get this in, by this day. [00:11:00] And those self-imposed deadlines are actually how I work whenever. And this is just how I've worked in business. Anytime that I've really needed to get something done, I've made promises to other people that have it'll be done. [00:11:13] And that has forced me. To take action. Those deadlines have driven action. Um, I'm very grateful to my publisher Morgan James fellowship. They were very patient with me, you know, um, in a lot of ways, uh, I was picky about the artwork. I was picky about the typeface in the book and all that, but all this is. [00:11:35] It's a journey as a creative, it's a journey as a leader, it's a journey as a journey in self-expression, um, to really understand yourself more. I feel so much better equipped if I ever write another book again, which I probably will, but I've learned a lot about myself through this process. [00:11:54] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:11:54] I'm taking all that in for a second, because there was so much in what you just said. [00:11:58] It's so [00:12:00] I love, love, love, love, love that you said that how much you learned about yourself as part of writing the book and, and it, and it's funny to me that you said that it took patients on the part of your publisher because you were picky about things and I'm like, well, I've written six books. By gum, you better be picky. [00:12:17] It's your baby, you know, and believe me when you hold it for the first time, it's going to be amazing. I wrote this, but, but yet this, this notion of learning a lot about myself, I CA I keep, you know, this is the innovative mindset podcast. So I keep coming back to that. What, what did you learn? What was the thing that changed from, from before you wrote the book to when. [00:12:41] Gave it to the publisher and said it's finished. What was, what was the transformation inside you? [00:12:47] Mike Kim: [00:12:47] I think the biggest thing for me with that was, um, understanding this is a little bit more out there. Um, When quarantines [00:13:00] first happened, bend, it really slowed my life down. Like it did for a lot of other people. [00:13:05] And I thought I had this dream one day, or like, I don't know, just, just one of these meditative experiences about what I really wanted to do with my life. And I realized, I was like, I don't know that I'm doing it yet. Or maybe that changes who knows. Right. And I said to myself, what do. Will really live on after I'm gone. [00:13:29] And again, this is framed by what my friend Jeff told me, you know, it's fun to build things, build things that lasts. And as I was writing this book, I realized, you know what, my nephews are going to read this. They're going to read this if they want to, it'll be there. You know, even after I'm long gone, you know, they're five years old and three years old right now. [00:13:48] And, uh, When I had that kind of experience that this little dream thing, you know, one of those in between waking and sleeping moments, I was like, I just want to write stories. I [00:14:00] just want to tell stories. Stories are what live on. We live. We read stories from hundreds of years ago that were written thousands of years ago. [00:14:06] These stories have been written and we still repurpose and reinterpret and re-express them today. So while I love marketing and I love business coaching, I, I felt very strongly what I really wanted to do later on tap back into telling stories in writing. The book has opened up or reignited part of my creative muscle to, to write, to just write for the sake of, uh, sharing my thoughts, sharing my, um, feeling feelings, but also holding space and creating space for other people. [00:14:43] So, right. Um, not too long ago, um, back in March, when, you know, there were a lot of crazy events going on in the county. And there was a shooting in Atlanta of many Korean women. Um, working out this massage probably really impacted [00:15:00] me because I was like these women, like my mom's age, you know, there's a lot of anti-Asian hate going on. [00:15:05] And I wrote an article it's old, it's just on my blog and it went viral thousands and thousands, and thousands of people read this. And, um, the feedback I got was just as, if not more fulfilling, Than the feedback I got from my clients. Hey, thanks for helping me discover my voice or giving me clarity on my marketing strategy. [00:15:29] But I realized with just a few strokes on the keyboard, I could really create space and hold space for people. Or for the world at large. And I, I don't know what that looks like yet. Right. I've just published the book comes out tomorrow. Right. But, um, and I'm not in a rush to leave the business and marketing space, but I'm starting to get an inkling of what I might want to do in the next phase of my life. [00:15:53] And that's been really funny. I don't think it would have happened. Had it not been for writing this [00:16:00] book. [00:16:03] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:16:03] I, I love the notion that it's opening, opening that part of you almost up again. You're such a creative person in all ways that I've seen, you know, you're one of my teachers I've learned so much from you and, and yet, uh, and not yet, but, and also. Having having, uh, learning something like marketing and business from someone who is a creative, like you is so fulfilling and inspiring. [00:16:31] And at the same time, this is a strange question because we who are in sort of the entrepreneur space, forget that most people aren't in it. Right. But if you want to further a cause or a business, it seems. It's a great idea to, to, to build that brand. And so I guess the question is how much do you think your personal brand, you might, Kim, your personal brand will, uh, help your [00:17:00] efforts in that next phase? [00:17:01] Whenever that comes you, you may not be in a hurry to leave the personal brand business, but when that next phase comes, how much of what you've built already? We'll help you move forward. [00:17:13] Mike Kim: [00:17:13] Okay. I think it helps a lot. And this is one of the concepts that I cover in the book. Um, the path of the personal brand, right. [00:17:21] And, um, one of the most unique and challenging things about building a business around my self. You know, w which I've done and you've done. Um, certainly as well. Uh, we hear this phrase personal brand thrown out around a lot. And, um, my best attempt to define what a personal brand is, is basically a public identity you've crafted for an express purpose. [00:17:43] Right. Um, and it's a confluence of your ideas, your expertise, your reputation, and your personality. That's, that's an identity, all those things in one. And the funny thing that I've seen in this space, And this may sound super obvious, but no one really says this is that you can't just go out [00:18:00] on eBay or Craigslist and buy. [00:18:02] A personal brand, you can't buy a Bernay Brown's influence. You can't buy Tony Robbins influence. Even if you were to acquire the rights to their intellectual property and their customer databases, their social media accounts, you can't buy it when it comes to this, this, this thing called a personal brand. [00:18:23] Everyone starts from zero. So. Um, when people talk about starting a brand or they, they ask me, you know, how should I start, um, building a brand, um, I asked a lot of them, well, what do you want it to do for you? And they, they often say, this is all they said, well, I want to do whatever I want. And they want to like live in this magical place, which I've since dubbed the land of whatever I want. [00:18:49] And they'll say things like, oh, look at the rock, Dwayne Johnson, you or Oprah, or Carrie Vaynerchuk or Joe Rogan. They can make money doing anything they want. And [00:19:00] what most people don't understand is that there is a path to a place of that kind of influence. That these folks have reached, but it requires that you walk through this really lonely place that I call the valley of focus. [00:19:13] So I can, I can jump into this if that's cool, because I think this will be fun for us to talk about. So, um, you know, let's say you start your journey, you write blog posts, you share some inspirational quotes on social media. You start a new podcast. And unfortunately it doesn't really feel like anyone's listening and this is totally. [00:19:30] Right. Your friends, your family, your colleagues. They're a bit confused by what you're doing in some even stuff following you online, because they're like, what is Mike doing? What is this all to doing? And you feel more alone than ever. And, uh, great news. You're now in the valley of focus and in this valley of focus, you whittle down all of your random ideas. [00:19:51] To focus on one topic, one idea or one market, and you decide, you know, whether you're going to specialize in, you know, helping [00:20:00] people get healthy or you'll make more money or build better relationships. You narrow your focus even further to, to determine what you're going to do in that particular market marketing is a big market, right? [00:20:10] So I had to like narrow that down and say, I'm going to help people with personal branding and copywriting writing their words. And you start to slowly understand much like a nightclub or dance club. You can't play five different types of music and expect like everyone to come to your place. Right. They just don't mix. [00:20:29] You have to have clarity. So I experienced this when I started in business and marketing, probably 90% of the people who follow me just start. Right. A few of them followed me. Um, as I stepped out into this venture, um, but what happens is when you stay focused and you get more narrowed down, um, you become known for a few things and then just eventually, you know, one or two things, but strangely enough, this attracts other influential [00:21:00] people to you who have followings of their own. [00:21:03] And because of that clarity, they may hire you. They may give you a platform. They meet you. Opportunity to speak to their audience about your area of expertise and lo and behold, a bunch of their followers just start following you. Right? And then some other influential person who sees that influential person. [00:21:19] Number one, connected with you, asks you to speak to their audience and boom, the phenomenon happens all over again, and you're starting to gain an audience, build an audience or gain followers rapidly, much more. And your, your story of becoming this rising star and over time. And this is where I feel like I'm starting to step into over time. [00:21:41] Over many years, your audience keeps following you. Not just because of what you know, but because you have who you are, you're not just building a brand, you're becoming your brand. That's the message of the book. You are the brand, right? Because of all this focus, your work [00:22:00] improves, your expertise becomes established and some of your biggest fans become super fans. [00:22:05] If you will, who will gladly follow you into any of your future pursuits? And if you have enough of these people, they will help you reach the land of whatever I want and stay there. Now I've seen this play out. In front of my very eyes with the rock, Dwayne Johnson. When I was in college, I loved this guy. [00:22:26] He was a wrestler, right? Does that today? Everyone knows him as one of the world's biggest action stars are used to all these movies, but yeah, professional wrestling for like 15 years was his valley of focus. And he didn't even really want to become a wrestler. He played college football and wanted to make the NFL and he didn't make. [00:22:45] Right. So this dude pivots into wrestling stays the course. Most people don't realize this either. They don't know this fans hated the rock. When he was first a wrestler, they boot him out of the building. They hated him, right. [00:23:00] They just thought he was so cheesy. He thought their character, the character was stupid and he just kept with it. [00:23:06] And the WWE, you know, his company started reform as I did. And just starting to get really popular. And at the height of his popularity, when I was in college, I remember this, um, he started to make some movies and he was just so good. He was so charismatic. He was so entertaining. He started to leave, uh, wrestling at times to go shoot these movies. [00:23:28] And what happened is the wrestling fans felt like he sold out. And not all of them were thrilled. He was acting so they just stopped following him. They started booing him when he'd come back to wrestling, even though he's one of the most popular people in the company. And yet enough people, enough people like me watched his movies. [00:23:49] I was a fan of him as a wrestler enough people like me watch this movie. And now I still follow him on social media. I probably have bought [00:24:00] under armor, you know, workout gear because he endorses it. Right. And he can do whatever he wants, the workout gear, the athletic apparel, Lisa, oddly enough, he sells tequila that doesn't really seem on brand for a guy who, you know, works out all the time. [00:24:16] You're drinking tequila, you know, but he could do whatever he wants, but people don't realize. Oh, my gosh, the guy labored for 15, 20 years as a wrestler, he had to deal with the heartache of not making the NFL. This is not somebody who just said, I'm going to just talk about everything and whatever I want and people are going to follow me. [00:24:36] So all, all of this, just kind of tying a bow on this. Do I feel like my personal brand will help me in future endeavors? Absolutely. I'm not as popular as a rock, but I do believe that there are some people who have said, Mike, we just like you, we just like what you do. We'd like what you stand for. And I'm curious to see where you're going to go and I'm going to follow. [00:24:58] And because of [00:25:00] that, um, I feel this amount of freedom, I feel a certain amount of freedom and Liberty to go explore these new things. [00:25:10] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:25:10] First of all. I'm so glad that you talked about the rock because it's a lot of what you said. It really resonates with me because what I, I, I follow him also. And it's not just because he's charismatic. [00:25:20] It's because he's welcoming. If you see what I mean, like he's doing his thing and I know there are millions of fans and it's not like, I feel like he is. Talking directly to me, except for, I kind of do. And, you know, and, and I think for him, it's probably on, on many levels, it's authentic, but also it's very practical, right? [00:25:41] It's a very practical, this is who I am, and this is what I stand for. And he kind of. Set all the dominoes up and knocked all the dominoes down. And that's one of the things I really respect about you is that you are, in addition to being creative, you're very practical. You break things down [00:26:00] in, in the work that I followed with you in the classes I've taken with you in, in a very, um, and I hate the word actionable because it's a weird word, but it's really true. [00:26:09] If I take action on the things that you recommend, things open up. Right? So, so. What, if you can talk about that a little bit, how do you reconcile or combined the very creative parts of who you are with that very practical part of you? [00:26:27] Mike Kim: [00:26:27] Yeah, I think it, you know, it, that's a great question. I think I have always felt more of a bias towards action. [00:26:36] Um, when I've taken various self-assessment, you know, tests and stuff like that, uh, StrengthsFinders was one of them. Uh, I dunno, how many of you listening may have heard of strength finders? Um, but with StrengthsFinder number one was maximizer. Um, which means that I don't like to start things completely from scratch. [00:26:56] I like to take good things and make them. [00:27:00] And I'm like, oh, no wonder I'm a consultant. Right. And then number two was, um, implement. Which means I just go do things. I, I overthink every other area of my life except for creativity and business. I mean, I'm like, I'm like, I want it done yesterday. I just go do it. [00:27:20] Um, it's probably why I work really long hours and get stressed out and stuff because I have more ideas than I can ever execute on. Right. And I have realized that I don't know if I came up with this phrase or I heard it somewhere, but I like it. Um, we are idea rich and execution. Poor. And this world of social media has made that even more of an anathema, if you will. [00:27:43] I mean, it is a sickness it's easy to post other people's ideas. It's really hard to go do them. Sure. So, um, when I see other people take a long time to execute on things, I'm just, it just drives me nuts. Right. And I'm like, okay, that's their own pace. That's their own journey. I'm not going to judge them. [00:27:59] But for [00:28:00] me, um, I, some, sometimes I can't sleep on this. I get it. So I'm like, okay. Uh, I I'm, I'm biased that way, you know, bias towards action. Um, and then the third strength on strength finder was just, it was just a strategic oversight. Like I just see the big picture. I'm always a big picture person. So I'm very bad with little details. [00:28:22] Um, it's why I have an assistant that handles these things, right. I'm just like, I have this idea. I want to see this happen. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And sometimes I, I am my own worst enemy because I know how to do too many things. And so I execute very quickly or I can't wait to get things executed, which makes me a very poor delegate. [00:28:41] Hmm. So I've learned all these things about my workflow in my work life and how I made, and I've realized that that has had to force me as a leader to grow in other areas. I have to become a better leader. I have to become a more patient person. I have to become [00:29:00] more of a visionary and less of a hands-on person. [00:29:02] These are all really big areas I have to grow in. You know, we're here, we're talking about the innovative mindset, right? I have to innovate those parts of my life. Otherwise I will relegate myself to living like this until I'm dead. Um, so it's either changed. And grow and, and, and work with people and work with teams or do this for the rest of my life. [00:29:25] And it is what it is. And there's no wrong answer. That's the other thing, um, that I've really realized there's no wrong answer. I know a lot of people who are like me, and this is what they want. That is how they want to live. They don't want a big team. They don't want an administrator. They don't want people on payroll. [00:29:44] They're okay with doing that. Right. And then there are other people who, who have made that shift and both are valuable. Both are building their business and their life around the kind of life and business they want. Um, so really I'm at that [00:30:00] crossroads where it's like, I'm a creative, but I'm also like very, very wired to take action. [00:30:05] And the more and more self-aware I become, I see options laid out on the table for me. It's like, okay, which path am I going to go down? I have to decide. And that's really, that's really how I see it. [00:30:19] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:30:19] And it's lovely that it's about self-awareness, you know, so much of this. Is knowing who you are and knowing what you can offer. [00:30:28] And I, and I, I I'm, I'm grateful that you, that you talked about that because I think that's what the book is going to do on a much larger scale for you is it's going to take that particular message and, and amplify it. Uh, and so I'm, I'm really grateful. I want to say that. Because it comes out tomorrow and you should all go get it. [00:30:48] It's you are the brand, the eighth step blueprint to showcase your unique expertise and build a highly profitable business. I, I could keep you for the next six hours, but I know you have a life to get back to. [00:31:06] So I will ask you the one question you might remember this, you might not that I ask everybody who comes on the show. [00:31:24] The question is this. If you had an airplane that could sky write anything for the whole world to see, what would you say? [00:31:32] Mike Kim: [00:31:32] Oh, yeah, I remember this question. Okay. Um, you know what I've got to say, you are the brand. Um, and, and it's not just because of the book, but it's really the charge that I want to lay out, you know, to my readers, to my friends, to my colleagues, um, there we all, we all have a brand. [00:31:54] Um, we all have a reputation, you know, personal branding. This phrases become, you know, this. [00:32:00] Popular term now. Um, but it's just, it's just your reputation. It's just what people think of you. It's just the identity that you hold in in the, in the minds and hearts of people who know you. And, um, I think one of the things I've learned about life through my work is that entrepreneurship thinking outside the box, it has a way of bringing out the best parts. [00:32:26] And also revealing some of your roughest edges and in a world of image and social media followers. My message really is, you know, be someone worth following, be that truly be who you're trying to sell to people, whether it's, you know, through an Instagram account for fun or trying to land a new job or, or trying to start your business, like you are the brand, don't just build a brand. [00:32:53] Be the brand you that that's who you are. And it's a call for us to, to grow and mature and to be the [00:33:00] best version of ourselves. So that's what I would write across the sky. And it's not just because the book's out tomorrow. [00:33:06] Izolda Trakhtenberg: [00:33:06] No, but I w you know what? I think that's great. And it's a call to be. Your authentic self, which is, which is the best way to be, because there's so much that we have to fair it through that isn't authentic and real, and you're calling for us to be real. [00:33:22] And I think that's great, Mike, thank you again so much for being here and being so generous with your wisdom and your knowledge. I appreciate it very much. Gave a man, many men, a lineage of pride.   The moon rose tonight as usual, no spore-filled scab. As ivory as the cut belly of an apple sliced to share. Nothing noxious to point to, say you.   The world of museums and love are, as it turns out, through the machinations and designations of man-made things, defined by abstractions: Security, beauty, even, in our worst days.   One day, Blaschka told his son, yes—   American Literature   for Joey   “the silver lamp,--the ravishment, --the wonder--the darkness,--loneliness, the fearful thunder” John Keats   There's a billboard with the route 66's version of June Cleaver, holding a pie underneath block letters HO-MADE PIES, which is how dry towns get their jollies, I guess.   We buy coffee in cups so thin the joe becomes us and we never regain our human shapes, and I say to you I wonder where they keep the half-bull man and you shotgun back I've spent my life asking that like the sharp shooter you are.   Who wouldn't want to be the son of a bull and a damned woman we are all sons of bull and damn        you've gone West to find everything or me   and look at girls the way I look at girls who are bad for me. Like a desert through slatternly windows. Waking Up to Your Mates World June 27, 2021 MVC I. Our Relationship A. Let me start by saying that Kim and I have had a very good marriage relationship but we definitely hit a wall about 20 years into our marriage where things were not too pretty! 1. Today we want to share with you that story and some lessons we have learned along the way hoping that you will be able to find something that connects with and helps you! B. Kim and I had become what I call “professional husband and wife” and “professional parents.” 1. By that I do not mean that we have become so great in those areas that we are in a higher category than others but rather that we have learned the routine well, we know what we need to do and we were doing it well. a. We have learned well how to juggle all of the different responsibilities and schedules and we are doing what we need to do. 2. But also by professional I mean that we have learned to do it in a way that all the external things were done (kids to school and events, bills paid, house taken care of, meals were made), but internally our hearts were getting more and more dry and distant from each other. 3. Somehow, with all the busyness and responsibilities of life we were not intentional nor gave the time needed to keep the internal fire going in our relationship. a. By internal fire, I am referring to that thing that the Scripture calls “cherishing.” b. That is the heart disposition that holds the other person as dear. It is those tender affectionate feelings that cause you to treasure the other person, to hold them as a special prize, to esteem and admire. 4. We found ourselves set into some patterns in our relationship that over the long run were deadly. 5. Some years ago, the Saturday Evening Post ran a humorous article that traced the tendency for marriage partners to drift from a height of bliss into the humdrum of routine attitudes. That article perfectly described the drift in our relationship! The article was called the “seven ages of a married cold.” The article likens the state of the marriage to the reaction of a husband to his wife's colds. Year 1- “baby girl, I'm worried about you. You have a bad sniffle and there is no telling about these things with all this strep around. I am putting you in the hospital this afternoon for a general checkup and a good rest. I know the food is lousy, but I'll bring your meals in from Rossini's. I've already got it arranged with the floor superintendent.” Year 2- “listen darling, I don't like the sound of that cough and I've called Doc Miller to rush over here. Now you go to bed like a good girl, please. Just for papa.” Year 3-, “maybe you'd better lie down, honey; nothing like a little rest when you feel punk. I'll bring you something to eat. Have we got any soup?” Year 4- “look, dear, be sensible. After you feed the kids and get the dishes washed, you'd better hit the sack.” Year 5-, “why don't you get yourself a couple of aspirin?” Year 6- “if you'd just gargle or something, instead of sitting around barking like a seal!” Year 7- “for Pete's sake, stop sneezing! Whatcha trying to do, gimme pneumonia?” 6. Back then Pat and I found our marriage to be somewhere between year 6 & 7. It became a wakeup call for us. C. We were beginning to be very short with one another and I was getting to the place where I was not that excited about coming home at night and she was pretty happy to see me leave in the morning. 1. To me it felt like our relationship was on two different tracks. We were like two trains heading the same direction but each on a separate track next to each other! 2. For a few years, I had been struggling with my health to the point that I was close to bedridden for many months. My doctors could not determine what was going on so we went to Mayo Clinic. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called fibromyalgia. It is a muscle/neurological disorder, which causes chronic pain & fatigue. a. There is no cure for this, but rather you learn to live with it by managing it through various lifestyle changes. There are medications to help ease the pain but the side effects are not worth it to me. b. I was always a very active & athletic person with a high energy level. I found myself restricted with many limitations in what I could do. In the beginning this situation left me very incapacitated, discouraged and grieving the loss of the person I had become. I was wrestling with embracing and accepting these limitations and struggling with figuring out how to live my life in light of them. 3. Pat found himself picking up much of the load of what I had to let go of. At first he picked it up with joy because we finally had a clear diagnosis, but as time went on it became a huge burden and Pat found himself resentful and angry with me for the person I had become. 4. How do you tell your wife that you are not sure that you even like your wife any more, especially when you are the senior pastor of a church and you have been preaching a series on becoming lovers of God and people? 5. We went to bed one Saturday evening after another hard day with one another. We had a rough exchange of words a couple of hours before and had spoken little to each other. I finally turned to Pat and said, “Pat, I want to apologize for the person that I have become. I know I am not the person you married 20 years ago and I don't like the person I've become either. In fact, I'm grieving the person I once was, full of energy and life.” a. You do not know how that freed up my heart. What I was feeling was true, she has changed and even she knows it. I had the best night of sleep that I had had in months 6. The next morning I was able to share with Kim how I was feeling and that I had been deeply disappointed in the person she had become and the changes that had taken place in our life. E. My sharing with Kim the disappointments that I was feeling allowed her to come in touch and freed up to communicate to me the disappointments that she had with our relationship and me. 1. Her primary disappointment was that a. I had not provided for her a very exciting life, b. The church had become the “other woman” in my life and she and the girls were pushed to the side. c. She was dying on the inside and now battling her physical health 2. I did not defend myself because instantly I knew that she was right. You see an exciting date in the Peglow household is going to a small group meeting, or assisting me in a counseling session, or going to some ministry activity or to a child's sporting event or school activity. Other than that, there is not much going. 3. I put no intentionality or creative energy into our marriage relationship. F. We knew we were in trouble and God in His grace put in our path a marriage retreat that was just for couples in ministry with the unique struggles they go through. We got three major take aways from that conference that put us back on track and relaunched our marriage. II. Lessons Pat Learned 1. Start all over – get remarried … – to the same person! 1. We heard Ray and Ann Ortland at a conference speak about this very thing of us not being the person we married! 2. They said we need to renew our marriage vows with the people we have become today. 3. And we need to remarry the person they have become over and over again throughout the years. 4. Kim and I received that as God's word for us and we did and have done that repeatedly since then! B. Secondly, while walking with Jesus is essential to a healthy relationship, marital skills are very important too! 1. I felt if you just meet with Jesus regularly and walk with Him that is all you need and that everything else in the marriage will fall in place supernaturally! 2. Yes, it is true that Jesus is essential to give you the heart you need for marriage but the skills are very important to make you that much more effective and less combative and stressful in your relationship. C. Enter into, appreciate, and value your mate's world! Kim had entered into my world (my interests, my activities, my loves, etc.,) but I never entered into hers! Remember I am serving God – I am a pastor I need to focus on the more important things! 1. Read 5:25. Emphasize, "Gave himself up for her…" a. That phrase "gave himself up for her" explains how a husband loves his wife. He sacrifices himself in order to do what is best for her. 2. What God was challenging me to do was to "lay down or leave my world in order to enter into her world." One of the things that Ephesians 5:25 is calling husbands to do is to lay down their world, the things that come natural to them, the things they are comfortable and familiar with and enter into their wife's world that is just as important and valuable as yours!" 3. All I had ever done was invite Kim to enter into my world of ministry and my interests rather than entering into her world of responsibilities and her interests. 4. Therefore, my new mission from God was clear. Meet my wife's practical needs that I had neglected for years and the only way that I was going to meet it was by stepping outside of my world and entering into hers. 5. Not only is her world important but she is actually my number one ministry even above the church and my number one relationship priority outside of Jesus! ¨ A few other lessons God has taught us! III. Lessons learned - Kim A. It is important for a married couple to work as a team as a practical outworking of what it means to be one. Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12 “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? In addition, if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.” 1. Responsibilities: we work as a team and share in household duties and raising & parenting our children according to our time schedules & commitments. 2. Decision making – we've learned to listen and hear each other out when making major decisions and not act on a decision until we have both prayed about it and are unified in it. 3. One area that I hear now and then with couples is the “mine and yours” mentality regarding finances. You have become one and your names both need to be on the bank accounts, credit cards, mortgage and car titles. B. Take time to study your mate 1. Do you realize that God made males and females different? In fact, in Psalm 139, it says he made each one of us unique and different in our mother's womb, whether male or female. 2. Listen to this quote from Gary Thomas from his book “Cherish”… “Your spouse has a unique history, so cherish your spouse by treating them according to their reality. They are living a life that has never been lived before. They have a personality that has never existed before. They have a unique blend of strengths and weaknesses, temptations and gifts, as well as a once-in-a-universe calling. Your role is to help them complete their one-of-akind story.” 3. Take time to discover one another. Men, is she a verbal processor? Does he need down time when he comes home from work? What are your spouse's hobbies, favorite flower, candy, food, types of movies, books, activities, places they love to go? What energizes or depletes your mate? What are their love languages (physical touch, receiving gifts, acts of kindness, words of affirmation, quality time? What language(s) fill their love tank up? 4. What are their inner quality traits & characteristics? What areas are their strengths & weaknesses? 5. Study your mates so you can begin to practically cultivate a relationship where you both can express and cherish your love to each other according to your knowledge of one another. Some ways to do this are: a. Begin to and practice praising and affirming their inner character and personality traits and strengths. i.e... smart, kind, funny, great sense of humor, parent well, loyal friend, athletic, good listener, uses their time wisely, great cook/griller/baker, creative, good provider, heart for God and His Word, good listener, wise, teachable, or good teachers, live within their means. b. Pray often and regularly with them. c. Lovingly exhort them to work on their areas of weakness and to excel still the more physically, spiritually, emotionally and intellectually. d. Pat with sils; love notes/candy bar under pillow/ in restaurant Pat said I was kind and beautiful 6. Simply - come along side each other, support one another in becoming the personal story that God has written for them, and created them to be. 7. Why this is important: your attentiveness and interest in one another will deeply convey and communicate your undying, unwavering love for each other. It will demonstrate that your spouse is the most important person in your life other than Jesus. It will warm their heart toward you in such a way that they will begin to naturally respond back to you in like manner. 8. It doesn't take being a rocket scientist to study your mate and get to know them. IV. Final take aways A. Of the things we heard today, which area needs the most attention for you to improve your marriage? a. Maybe you need to be remarried to the same person. Either publicly or privately renew my vows with the person who my mate is today! b. Study your mate and appreciate their uniqueness and unique needs! c. Maybe it is another area we mentioned today C. Conversation starter – You know what baby, ________________ is the area I believe I need to give attention to in order for our marriage to excel still the more. Is there an area God has spoken to you about? D. You may have hit walls that are way more serious or bigger than mine and Kim's – remember as I said “skills are very important but turning to and trusting Jesus is essential 1. We have people here to pray with you. 2 Corinthians 1:10b-11a 2. The song we are going to close with today is “there's nothing that our God can't do” and that is true with your marriage and mine. One word, one touch from Jesus and the power of heaven will be in your marriage– there is no power like the power of Jesus! Jeremiah 32:17 E. As we sing this song this morning, sing it out in faith and your prayer to the Lord regarding your life and marriage. F. Pray for marriages!

Stating they can start a college and car fund. Contending that it is important to get the word out about the nutritional message. Pearls of Wisdom Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a study of the health benefits of eating walnuts. Researchers gave participants a lower neuropsychological tests at the start of the study. Gave some walnuts and others no walnuts followed them for two years. Participants that scored at the lower end benefited from the walnuts the most of all. Doc asserts that the walnuts are beneficial because of the omega 3 essential fatty acids. Callers Beazer is experiencing knee pain. Peggy has two questions the first concerns a friend that is experiencing tics. Second she another friend who has sciatica. Annie has been diagnosed with nasal polyps. Mario has a lot of cavities in his teeth and also has a torn miniscus. Make sure that you gain consistency with a relaxed, calm nature to feel good and so the people around you feel like you're authentic. Gave that presence with your body so that you can convince the audience you're genuine, and the biggest audience out there you're convincing is your own self Try deep breathing Use Powerful poses. Take up a significant amount of space. Don't slump in the corner in the room. Don't be stuck on your phone. Remind yourself throughout the day to have a good posture to keep your body language open. Give power poses a try. Every once in a while, when you're in a place by yourself, do a power pose. Be expansive. Stand out there like Wonder Woman, so you feel better about what you're doing. Don't doubt yourself; tear yourself apart or make yourself feel anxious by analyzing everything you do, everything you say, and how you said it. Keep positive about the things you're saying and the things you're doing. If you find that you're not saying them in the right way or doing them in the right way, you correct them immediately. This is not an all-or-nothing thing. Just try to keep your presence as much as you can. Remember to listen; hearing other people will help them hear you will make them feel empowered. And in fact shows your power because you're willing to listen, hear other people and respond to them in a way that makes sense to the conversation you're having. It is a sign that you are confident when you can listen to other people and respond to them where they're at. They will feel heard, and they will become a true ally of yours. Challenge Try the power pose. Wait till you're in a quiet place by yourself before you have a meeting with someone that's going to stress you out. Try doing some power poses to see if it makes you feel more empowered and capable of having this tough conversation. Then when you're in the meeting, try maintaining the power pose by taking up more space, having your arms out wider, and generally having more eye contact and more interaction with the person and see how you feel afterward.

Introduction The Goals:  We Catholics are to love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.   With every fiber of our being, every last little bit of ourselves.   To love God in every internal experience -- every thought, emotion, body sensation, intention, impulse attitude, belief, assumption, every desire -- every internal experience oriented toward loving God.  Nothing within us oriented any other way.  That's the challenge, that's what that commandment means.    Fr. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, 23 but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members.  In IFS, the self is "Seat of consciousness"   Self=soul  Really unclear how to compare the "self" with the soul.  This is a thorny question  Self is perfect, undamaged, in no need of development My read is that in IFS, the self is the redeemer of the parts   only the parts are in need of redemption -- the self needs no redemption Self as an internal attachment figure.  Attachment taken inside.   Peace, harmony and love reign internally when the self is leading the system   Originally straight out of the Enlightenment -- central focus on man. Secular Humanism   Self is occluded and overwhelmed by parts with burdens and extreme roles  And so the self is essentially rendered helpless -- IFS does not emphasize this, but it seems to be a correct inference.   Agency seems to be located in the parts, not in the self Parts need to willingly unblend to allow the self to be free  "We can't…command ourselves to be curious rather than contemptuous of our vulnerable parts.  We can't force ourselves to feel compassion, no matter how much we believe its benefits.   Self as Redeemer --  Self is capitalized Agency:   The self is the one who is to govern our whole systems, an active inner leader But the self often lacks agency, sometimes almost completely in IFS parts get to decide when and how to unblend  Negotiating with the parts   What happens when a part just won't cooperate Like a child not wanting to go to take necessary medicine or not wanting to go to bed.  So to Catholic ears, the self can sound like it's dominated by the passions.    Self as the agents Each part has a subparts and a self.   Infinite regress. Self=soul, so this means that each person has multiple souls, one soul -- the self, and a soul for each of his parts.  And because parts have subparts, there might even be subsouls.   Parts can be conflicted -- that is common Because I've been trained for decades in the study of personality, I can locate those conflicts within the personality of a part -- no need to invoke other parts.     Openness to Spiritual World IFS as a spirituality -- Frank Rogers -- IFS as a Compassionate Spiritual Path   Richard Schwartz:  2010 in Introduction to "The Spirit-Led Life" by Mary Steege I gradually shifted my view of what I called the Self from being an innate human capacity for self-healing to a being a spiritual essence comparable to Buddha Nature, Atman, the Tao, or the Ground of Being.  Correspondingly, my view of IFS evolved from being a form of psychotherapy to being an integration of spirituality and psychology, or even to being a form of spiritual practice.  (p. xi)  Shift from secular humanism to spirituality.   Lack of an understanding of sin Evil is acknowledged in IFS, origins are not explained.   Harm exists,  Committed by parts that blend with us.  They don't know better, they are seeking the good as they understand it but there is a lack of vision Acting out of self-protection  No possibility of malevolence, of freely saying no to the good.  Although Augustine's Christian forbears  believed that we are born blessed, Augustine chose to focus on a Biblical allegory of minor importance at the time, which his contemporaries considered embarrassing.   Poorly researched and written 11 page book chapter -- Richard Schwartz and Robert Falconer 2017 -- rife with errors.   Pearls such as  "Jesus wasn't a highly discipline ascetic"  How could he have suffered the Passion. The Eastern Christian Church never accepted original sin In general, Christianity has misidentified parts as sinful urges or tempting thoughts and has encouraged followers to develop managerial parts to fight them.   Confidence.  Confidence in who?  Confidence in Self vs. confidence in God.   Self has many gifts.  Natural level Clarity -- vision is clear when we see through the eyes of Self and it is distorted when we see through the eyes of extreme parts.  Role for revelation?  Wisdom? Lots of Buddhism.   Parts having varying levels of access to the faculties of the intellect and the will Parts having varying access to other faculties and Passions.   Social and Political Positions.   Bill Richardson:  The IFS trainers were definitely neither religiously nor politically conservative, nor evangelical believers.  Their world view was farther left than most of us knew existed.   Very LGBTQ+ friendly Political positions -- very progressive politically Patriarchy Driving with the headlights on - we see what we need to My experience -- desiring to have a philosophy and theology background.  God's response  Confidence in God.   If we are seeking in earnest -- Seek and ye shall find.   I could be wrong about a lot of these things.  In humility I have to admit that.   Talents So is IFS Catholic Two answers -- if you're looking for a model of therapy or human formation that you as a Catholic can embrace unthinkingly, without reservation, without any scrutiny or critical thinking -- just swallowing it whole. Guys welcome back to the PODCAST I am actually on time lol. i DON'T know how I was this consistent for half a year, this is a lot of work. My dream is to build a team omg. ANYWAYS Today we have a special guest and her name is Jetty Nieuwenhuis. From the Netherlands, one of my favorite countries. She has coined the term the “F*ck it factor,” which I absolutely love. She opened up about her struggle with Bulimia, lyme disease, and being her authentic self. She also mentioned her breast implants and how they GAVE her lyme disease and a case called Breast Implant Illness. That stuff is scary. This led into our conversation about plastic surgery, loving yourself, and being comfortable in your own skin while still being able to DO WHAT YOU WANT. Then we threw the cherry on top talking about relationships and the secrets to a GOOD MARRIAGE. Jetty has been married for over 20+ years with her husband and she only has great things to say. What a pleasure it was having Raghunath on the show - SO insightful. He has the ability to really simplify the complicated. Here is the story, from Raghunath: I've been on such a spiritual quest in this life! From my teens I started a punk/hardcore band called Youth of Today, which championed the principles of clean living, vegetarian diet, and self-control. By the time I was 21, my band had tens of thousands of fans around the world. I was shocked. I started Revelation Records, an indy record label with my high school buddy and signed 20 bands with a similar beliefs and ethics. As exciting as this was, there was a growing void in my heart I knew only Spirit could fill. I got into spirituality, metaphysics, and mysticism; eagerly consuming spiritual classics, my hunger only increased. This eventually manifested as strong desire to go deeper. I split and quit the band. Gave the label to my partner. The teachings of India drove me East and at age 22, I ended up on an ashram floor in the holy village of Vrindavan. That was 1988 — and one of the best choices I made in my life.India before cell phones and satellite TV, what to speak of the internet, was an exotic land.  I got to refine and dive deep into my yoga practice, my study of sacred literature and ritual, learn kirtan, cooking, mantra meditation and living simply with nothing except a few robes on my body. I was blessed with integrity-driven teachers who understood the essence of spiritual life. In 1991 I received the name Raghunath (formally Ray Cappo), representing initiation into lineage and a rebirth. I travelled to ashrams all over the world and the holy places of India, and I simply fell in love with the rich spiritual culture. I remained a monk in an ashram for six and a half years and now, many years later, teach how to incorporate everything I learned into everyday life. Basically how to get the spiritual high without leaving the world behind (or in some cases leaving it). Guess what?  This stuff works whether you're a householder or a monk.Presently I'm the opposite of a monk. I'm married with 5 kids. I co-founded Supersoul Yoga and Farm with my wife, a school in the countryside in upstate NY,  where I lead yoga teacher trainings.  Every year I lead sold-out pilgrimages to my favorite cities & villages around India and share all that I know of these places that I love. In the mood of a pilgrim, I and teach others how to enter these sacred vortexes, that they may receive an unforgettable transcendent experience. Since 2016, every January I lead a game-changing training in India with an ever expanding curriculum. We started with a 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training which we've been refining to be a life changing experience.  We teach the sweet culture of yoga which includes not just advanced yoga and pranayama, but sacred literature, kirtan study, Ayurveda for yoga teachers, Ayurvedic cooking, and yoga nidra. Last year we added an entire second training dedicated exclusively to the study of kirtan. Occasionally I get asked to do a reunion with my band which, when on stage, I realize is extension of everything I speak of today. Welcome to another episode of feeding fatty. This is Roy. This is Terry. So we are the podcast. We are chronically in my journey through getting healthy, again, diet, exercise, change in mindset. So, we talk from time to time about the struggles and things that we do and Terry support for that. We also have, professionals as guests from time to come on and help us out. Give us some different viewpoints on things that we can do better to help us in this journey. Today is no different. Terry I'll let you introduce Roman. 00:00:50 Terry Yeah. Because we explore, relationships, with our food, with exercise, with life, and then also, with each other, Terry is such a big part of, me getting her well, she's a big part of life, no, either way, but we worked together and she is very instrumental in helping me on this path to wellness. So, let's just talk about that. What, how do relationships, affect things like are eating motivation, things like that. 00:02:05 Roman Oh, they actually affect them a lot because our relationships is such an important part of our life. Especially the intimate relationship, the one that we have with our romantic partner, because when we feel good in the relationship, everything else basically falls into place. When we don't, let's say our relationship gets toxic. We tend to go to food and other addictions as a coping mechanism. 00:02:38 Roy Okay. Yeah. I think it's two fold because for me, sometimes I can be driven just the other ways that, we're excited, things are going good and it's always like, Hey, let's go out and celebrate and have something good to eat. That's all it's like to celebrate. One thing that we're trying to, work hard on or, the, I guess, relating to different things as, food triggers, not only in our relationship, but work in life. It's just that, instead of having everything as a celebration point to run out and, eat some really good food, we're trying to change that to like maybe go do five pushups or do an exercise, do something physical instead of going for that food. 00:03:28 Roman Yeah, exactly. That's why when I celebrate, I made sure not to celebrate for food because it really only adds to the addiction. We're talking about addictions makes us stronger. It makes the neural pathways between food and pleasure is stronger in your mind. Right. 00:03:49 Roy Yeah. I think, we had a guest on this last week and were talking about some things that, and we try to look back in our past that relationships that we've had and things that have happened. And, I've been very fortunate that I have, I had an awesome childhood adulthood, life has just been very good for me. I'm blessed and couldn't ask for more, but the one thing that we kind of uncovered this last week was, ice cream. And, my relationship with that, as far as it being that celebratory mechanism that, as growing up, I had two grandpas that whenever anything, if were working, it'd be like, let's go down. You know, you worked really hard today. Let's go celebrate with some ice cream. Of course, taking a break, like my dad, when I'd go to work with them, we'd be like, oh, let's take a break and run over to dairy queen and get this. 00:04:47 Roy It's interesting that, while I never really thought about it until this week that I've carried that around in life with me, not necessarily as a negative, that something went bad and that's what triggers, but actually mainly that may be just the opposite. It was such a positive experience that, as cream is my thing that I've gotta be very careful with. 00:05:18 Roman Yes, yes. I know it makes a lot of sense. You associated again associated tons of pleasure with ice cream. Right. And that's when, right. When you want to feel great, now we just go to ice cream. Right. 00:05:33 Terry Also with your relationship with your grandparents, just anybody that you're thinking about that you had that celebratory mode with, it's like, it brings up good feelings, loving feelings with that. Yeah. 00:05:48 Roy It, and it carries over to, our spouse, our partner, because it's like, it, and it's not her not Terry's fault more me. I'm the one, I'm the trigger. It'd be like, oh, we had such a good day today. Let's rush out and get something to eat. Anyway, definitely something that we've been working on is to try to find, and maybe it's just as simple as let's go take a walk instead of, making food that focal point. 00:06:14 Terry To make a nachos at one o'clock in the morning, like we did a few months ago. Right. 00:06:21 Roy What are some other things that we can do to strengthen those relationships? And I, I, I'm assuming that this applies not only to our loved ones, but the relationships that we build with our families and coworkers and just, pretty much relationships in general. 00:06:41 Roman Yeah. That's a great question. I think you guys are a couple that's a great role model for me. I've been talking to you before and today, and I think that there was great energy between you and that's something that I definitely want to write and to be more specific, we need more communication. If you want to improve your relationship with the other person, remember that communication is the blood of the relationship. So, one thing to do is to make sure that you engage your partner in very deep conversations, not just shallow things about day to day stuff early into deeper emotions and feelings asked and how they feel and being asking very specific questions that also helps not just how are you, right? Yeah. How did you feel about that person saying that? Or how did you feel when you were in pain today? Those kinds of high quality questions? Another tip is to always be 100% present in the conversation. 00:07:54 Roman Make sure that you're not distracted by anything right. Gave that presence, that gift of your presence to your part. I will come in the eye be 100% there, especially if you are a man because women feminine women, they are very susceptible to this. Let's say the third tip is to make sure that you make your partner feel significant. You remind them that they are important to you. You praise them for every little thing. You make sure that they feel that they're appreciated because this is important. Yeah. Oftentimes we just take our partners for granted and we never gave them that praise or the feeling of significance. Yeah. 00:08:42 Terry Roy's really, Roy is really good at that. I mean, he D he tells me how grateful he is for me. I, I can't even tell countless times a day. I'm just like, oh me, I, I can't take a compliment. It's really hard for me to do. Yeah, 00:08:59 Roy Yeah. She is, I think it's an effort between both of us because she takes such good care of me in so many ways that it's like, Ooh, I've got to keep telling her not only because she is really awesome, but also because I don't want her to think I take it for granted or, those little bitty things that she does. I don't want her to think that they're unnoticed or overlooked. They're all just to me, the little things are as important as the big things. Probably more important day to day. 00:09:31 Roman Wow. That's some beautiful level of consciousness. Yeah. That's Tourette. Yeah. I can appreciate it. 00:09:40 Terry He's really good about it. He's also really good about trying to talk things out, trying to get to the root of causes, which I'm not like, I'll take care of him the way that I know how, and that's cooking and doing what I need to help make sure that he's being healthy and that I'm being healthy and all of that. I need to learn to verbalize that better. You have any tips on that? I mean, it's just hard. I don't know why it's so hard. 00:10:12 Roman Oh, that is such a huge shower for many women. And that, thank you. Thank you so much for sharing it. And let me tell you a bookstore. It, that is a great representation on this thing, that there is this marathon runner, a very popular athletes, rich role. He tells a story in his book. What basically happened is that he was going to get married to their girl and they have been dating for quite a long time. At one point they were living in different seats, let's say about two or three hours long away. At one point they were supposed to meet. She was supposed to come to him, but she said that she could, and that was about one month before their wedding. They were supposed to get married and well, he got upset and he said, okay, well, let me come to you. Let me drive. 00:11:16 Roman And she said, no, don't okay. So that was her first hand. Then they were doing the wedding rehearsal. She actually, she didn't want to do it. There was a lot of tension and basically what she was doing. She was showing him that she didn't want the marriage. The rehearsal went its way, but he actually was very anxious. He thought that she might not even show up during the way, but she did. She did. And they got married. And then they went to this honeymoon. I think it wasn't Hawaii or something like that. In that honeymoon, they were not talking to each other. They like, she was so angry that she had told him not to talk to her at all. So they were basically spanning it apart. At the end of the honeymoon, on the field day, he was fed up with it. He said, okay, so I can't take this anymore. 00:12:29 Roman We should just break up. And she said, okay. So he was very angry. They went home and they basically did not leave a day together as a couple, as a married couple. He went to talk to her friends. That's when he found out that she actually had someone else who was dating someone else at this point. The point of this story is that she was dropping hands to him all along the way, many hints, but she was not saying this directly. And he was not getting those hands. That's the point where the men, they don't like cans. They want direct information, direct commands, direct orders. They're basically a very simple in the sense. Yeah. 00:13:24 Terry Yeah. That's, that has been a big issue, huge issue between men and women, because we want men to get it. We want them to get it and you figure it out, but here's a couple of hints along the way. You just figure it out. I don't need to have to tell you, I don't know why that is. 00:13:42 Roy Well, and that's, and I'm that way, sometimes I have to tell Terry I'm getting something here, but let's just be very clear about it. Cause you know, yeah. Cause I mean, sometimes that receptors not always dialed in and most of the time, I mean, we've been together long enough and I think we care enough about each other that, a lot of that stuff comes through and maybe she says, oh, don't worry about it, but I know better. I need to, I need to be worrying about that. But, but it's like we're making a transition in our diet. I have been very quizzical quizzical about this to her to, because I want to know where, we talked about it, but I need to make sure that this is good for her as well as good for me. Trying to just set her down and ask her, how do you feel about this? Let's talk about it. 00:14:40 Roy Because I don't want, if it's not good for both of us, I don't want this to go on for a long time and in her be resentful because that's, what I see is what happens is one per one partner does something for the other and they have to keep doing it or it last over a period of time until they become very resentful of that. 00:15:05 Roman Yes, yes. That happens. I mean, you need to be careful about that before, so think or discuss before to take on such a commitment. Yeah. And any, no. What if you don't feel comfortable doing it anymore? It's okay to renegotiate. Exactly. 00:15:22 Roy Yeah. That's what I keep telling her, is this in, because I think it's, I think a lot of this can be generational just like with myself. When I was growing up, you went to work for a company and you stayed there for 30 years, you did this and you bought a house and you stayed there for your whole lifetime and, younger in life in my thirties that, I decided that, what, it's all right to change your mind as we grow. And as we develop things change. We have to be able to accept it, understand it, but we have to communicate. I mean, there's things that have changed in our relationship that I don't know what it is. I can't tell, but it's just, maybe a little thing that was like, Hey, I don't really like that too much. Right. This moment, not anymore. And, but instead of just either letting her continue to do it or, her doing it and me just, festering about it, that I don't like this that much anymore, just have a community, just talk about it. 00:16:30 Terry I like how you said, I like how you said you, how you give permission to renegotiate because we are so set and we just think we need to follow through, , 00:16:44 Roman That's right. That's right. That's the best example of how we need to keep communication lines open and the relationship. Even if something is bothering us, it's okay to say this. Just make sure that you say it in a loving way. Yeah. You find the right moment, that's it? 00:17:06 Roy Yeah. And it's easy to lash out. This is something that I have to be careful about because, do we work a lot? And so, we enjoy our work. We work a lot and sometimes things get tense, not necessarily between us, but more me like a process is breaking down. Something's not clicking. It's like when you have very limited time and you have a lot of things to do, if things tick off just perfect, you can get it done. And life is good. If there's one little glitch, then it throws everything out of balance. Unfortunately, Terry is the closest person and I don't ever want to lash out her. I had to be very careful about, Hey, what? I I'm having this problem. It's has nothing to do with you. I don't want it to run off on you. I, you know, I'm not that great. 00:18:01 Roy Not as good as I need to be about, well, number one, not letting it fester to get that way, but also, just making sure that she doesn't get the runoff from things, other things that are going on in life. 00:18:14 Roman Exactly. That's the correct word runoff. That's why they want to, you want to share what's on your mind very quickly. Not wait until it festers. Sure. 00:18:27 Terry Yeah. I mean, you do a good job at that. You you're very cognizant and I don't mean this to be the Roy and Terry show, but honestly you really, they really are very cognizant. I mean, hopefully at this juncture in our life, we've learned something along the way. I think we're really applying blind those lessons. 00:18:48 Roy Yeah. That's something else that, I feel fortunate enough about that. I just told her earlier that how, I was lucky to find her and we got together and, life has been good, but what, how difficult is this now at older ages or, I guess people coming together at an older age when they're very set in their ways they're set in their routines, I guess that makes it harder to mesh, to become a couple. 00:19:22 Roman Sometimes yes. Sometimes now, and no, because as people get mature, more mature, they actually become more patient. They become less selfish and they are more open to having a relationship that actually sustainable and not just about them, but they are ready to give more, even though it means that it might mean that they're not getting the same amount of love back. Yeah. That this transition, basically that happens over our lifetime from selfishness to selflessness, it helps relationships in older age. 00:20:08 Terry They know, I think we know more about ourselves, so we know what we want or what we like and can talk about that, can you express that? Not so well, like I'm doing now, but, we just know what to look for and know what that attraction is. 00:20:34 Roman Exactly. Exactly. Just, just like Roy was saying about his, wanting everything to be perfect. And if something doesn't go right. Even little thing, you might not be happy about it and this might show, so he knows himself very well. He's very cognizant then that's one good thing that comes from the fact that he's a mature masculine man. 00:21:02 Terry He is very masculine, honey. 00:21:06 Roy I think I'll say, I don't know if he just told me the other day that she's like, are you 14? And I'm like, yeah, mostly most of the time. Yeah. I haven't dwelled. I'm still the little boy I see the shiny object and have to chase it or have to stand on the rail that you're not supposed to stand on or whatever it is like that. So. 00:21:26 Terry I don't want the frozen pond in the back. That's not all the way frozen. That was scary. Yeah. 00:21:31 Roy We had this winter, we had a Creek behind the house as Stover. I mean, like really bad. It got so cold. And, so were down there. I don't even know why were back there, but I was like, Ooh, let me just test that. She's like, first he tried to talk me out of it and then she could see she wasn't going to do that. She took her camera out and started. She's like, I just want to get a picture of you when you fall through, that's another, important part I think for us is, the laughing and having fun together. Even though we work together, we're together, a lot of time, we still take time to try to laugh and have fun and, not be serious all the time. 00:22:23 Roman Wow. This is, this is impressive because give me given the fact that you guys work together. You already spent quite a lot of time together. You have the time and the energy to also laugh together. I mean, wow. I'm impressed. I'm impressed. 00:22:43 Terry You humor is very important. Yeah. Yeah. Even if it doesn't seem like it's the right time to laugh, ? 00:22:51 Roy Yeah. Humor and, we have a lot of other things in common. Like, we like music, so we're able to bond over, we both have a pretty intense appreciation of music from our childhood and generation. So, we're able to bond over that. But, I was just going to ask though, in, as you help people with relationships, what are, 2, 3, 4, 5 of the largest, contributors to a discord in a relationship? 00:23:25 Roman Well, we actually touched upon some of them, first of all, is communication. Basically a lot of people lay like to stop communication when things go wrong. Yeah. And basically doing it as a punishment. Yeah. Right. Let's say their partner does something that they don't like and punish them with what I call silent treatment. 00:23:50 Terry Women do that a lot. And another mistake, 00:23:55 Roman Another mistake is not praising your partner, just taking them for granted too much. Yeah. Another mistake is taking your relationship for granted and thinking that your partner is not going anywhere, they will stay there for life. This is not true because you always need to be looking for looking to introduce new units and to be a relationship because newness is important for keeping passion. You might have loved, we might have downs of love between each other, but if you don't have passion, your relationship might be due. Right. Another mistake is let's say, I'm sorry. Yeah. Okay. Another mistake is not being emotional enough, not being too touchy and feely because you need that. You need that a romantic connection in addition to your like regular conversational connection. For example, be sure to give hugs, be sure to kiss your partner, be sure to smile at them all the time. 00:25:16 Roman This is also important. 00:25:19 Roy Yeah. I definitely think that one is two and it's funny cause we still hold hands a lot, this like teenagers and that's, and like even at night when we go to sleep, sometimes that's just, my hand over on her just where I can touch her, feel her there. It's just, I don't know. It's kind of weird, but it's important just to have that connection. 00:25:43 Roman And it's not weird. No, that's absolutely normal. And it's actually beautiful. I like that again, you guys rock. Thank you. Well, yeah, just. 00:25:55 Terry Trying to take a compliment. 00:25:58 Roy Yeah. It's, I think the funny part about taking things for granted is that, maybe if you haven't had it, you appreciate it more. But I think it's just the opposite. The better things are between us. The more appreciative I am for her and all of those things, because it's so rare to find, two people that really mesh, I think, as good as we do on so many things. No, I'm not saying we don't have our differences or things that, I was trying to think what that was it's, she doesn't like all lives and I like all lose. We're able to, segregate that and it doesn't have to be a big thing, but for the big things in life, I feel like that we're pretty much on track, but there's always, some little differences that we may not always be together on, but talking about it. 00:26:54 Roy I think the other thing, is respect is that, we have to really respect our partner and their thoughts and their feelings. I don't have to agree with her, but I just have to respect that her life, circumstances have gone, have got her to this belief. And so you have to respect it. 00:27:17 Roman Yeah, that's right. What else can you do? Other, you also have a perspective, your own perception, right. And who knows who's right. Yeah. It's better to be happy to be right. Exactly. Or something, 00:27:31 Terry Something in the middle there, and that's what you just kind of mesh it together. 00:27:36 Roy I think that's a, I hate to get off on the social media tangent, but I will for just a minute that's a problem with that is that, we try to spend so much time to, convince or to talk people into having our point of view that we really don't take the time to listen to them, to see what their point of view is. The other part is that we can harmonize. We don't, I mean, it'd be a boring world if were all carbon copies and all felt the exact same way about everything. I mean, that's what that kind of adds to the spice of life. Just a little bit. And, the other part I get off on this tangent too, but trying new things is that we, Terry's a lot more conservative in that respect and that, especially as we talk about cooking and trying some new things that we're doing is I just tell her, look, do whatever you feel, throw it out there. 00:28:39 Roy Especially, it's like, if it messes up or comes out bad, we can start over or we can go up to the restaurant and get something we're not going to starve to death, but you hear people that is like the wife makes something bad and then it turns into a fuss and, I don't really get that, but I encourage her, do something different. It's it's okay. 00:29:05 Roman Yeah, yeah, definitely. That's one reason you guys have each other present as a masculine man, your, and having her as a feminine woman yeah. In air life. One of your goals is to challenge her in a positive way and that does how you do it. She is a little bit more conservative. As you say, you are there to give her new challenges. Right. And that's one of them. He does. 00:29:39 Terry He really does. I mean, staying in the food genre, I, I fry fried up, I guess it was fried up. Some TemPay never had done that before. We didn't know what it was going to turn out to be, but I don't know. It was, it was lots of prepping and everything. You fry it up and put all your stuff on. It turned out to be pretty good. I just hate doing all that. Tend to know that it's not going to turn out bad in that terrible. I should, I need to try new things. 00:30:07 Roy Yeah. And it's yeah. It's even like, we've been kind of locked down and haven't been out of the house much, but it's like the other thing is the spontaneity. I'm not sure which one of us is more spontaneity. I think we are at different times on different subjects, but, it's like, it was like, were just sitting on the couch one night and I got an email from a, a place that has music. It just said, the first 50 people get free tickets for, it was a cover band, a couple of cover bands. We liked the bands that they were covering. So, what I, I just sent an email in not expecting to win. I got a message back like, oh, you're the winner. So, it was like the next night or two, we just loaded up, went to this place and we had an amazing time. 00:30:58 Roy The music was good. We found a couple bands, but the place was good. And, it was just kind of fun to do something on a whim. 00:31:08 Roman Oh yeah, this is so important. This is important again, because it introduces newness and their relationship. It also see when we become too conservative, we start feeling older. And this is not conducive to love. This is not conducive to passion. When we go back to that younger mindset, we could slip in when we had less responsibilities and so on and so forth, we feel younger. Let's say you go out and you spend a wild night and you come home at 4:00 AM. This is something that makes you feel young. That reenergizes your passion in the relationship. Yeah. 00:31:59 Terry Yeah. I'm just thinking, I'm just thinking about how much older I'm going to feel the next day. 00:32:05 Roy That's me holding back. Yeah. I'm like, what? You can sleep all day. It doesn't matter. We don't have anywhere to be. So, we can go do that kind of stuff. And, I, I think it's fun, it's just new adventures and that we are both, fairly up for adventures. I think that's the other thing is just, having these adventures, experiencing things together and the memories that it provides, because, w we have those things. It's like, oh my gosh, you remember that concert went to and this happened and it's, those are pleasant too. It's like when the, when it is a slow time and you're just kinda sitting around, not doing much and thinking about all these things, it's just, I think it adds to that pleasure from your partner as well. Yeah. Yes. For sure. Well, Roman, we appreciate you taking time to stop by and talk to us today. 00:33:07 Roy Any closing words, any closing thoughts on relationships before we wrap it up? 00:33:14 Roman Yeah. Yeah. One thought is that you need to treat a relationship, your relationship, a romantic one as an important area of your life, like your business or your health. You spend time in those interests, right? Both with your business and kind of your, how, and you also want to spend time, invest time and effort into your relationship. If you live it as is it well die pretty soon, right? So you want to at least read books about read books and get better at it so that you make sure that you stay motivated and you have the right information, the right resources to keep your partner happy. Yeah. Don't take it for granted. Yeah. 00:34:07 Roy Do you have any books off the top of your head, any recommendations that you can think of? If not, don't worry. I'm not, I didn't mean to put you on the spot. I just thought maybe you might. 00:34:16 Roman Have one, I would say two books. The first one is a general one, but it speaks a lot about whole, all things, relationship wise and this Stephen Covey's seven habits of highly effective people. Okay. The second one is by Sharon Salzberg called real love. 00:34:40 Roy Okay. Yeah. And I think it's interesting. I, I'm glad you bring that up because again, I can speak for me and that is a deficit in our relationship because we do something that we really enjoy. And so it's easy to spend. It's easy to spend a lot of time. There's, it's like, there's never an end to the things that we could do, even if we get things done that we've got to have done, there's still always looking at this new form of marketing, looking at this new technology, looking at this. Maybe we want to twist this or tweak that. Anyway, it, and this gets back to the communication is that Terry is, we are confident enough in our relationship. She can tap me on the shoulder and say, all right, you're done. And then, you know, 00:35:33 Terry Like, I'll say why I'll be there in a minute and now say you're a minute or my minute, because they're two different things. 00:35:43 Roy Yeah. It's easy to get hung up in that it just never ends. So, taking that time, if we're going to invest, like you said, we invest time and money in our businesses, in our homes. In a lot of things that we need to take that same approach to our relationships and, really invest and it's time. It's not, thank goodness Terry is not, she's not high dollar maintenance, so that's not an issue. But, just taking that time out of our day to, really be together to have those conversations, it's truly important. I think that's where people, kinda miss out some is that, you got, especially when you have kids, you got kids pulling you one way. You've got parents, you've got your job. Then, V go out and do stuff with friends that it just, it really divide your time down to where you don't have enough to devote to your relationship. 00:36:40 Roy That's the cool thing with Terry and me, it's like, we're best friends. We like to hang out with each other, even outside of work, we like to go do things together. So. 00:36:55 Roman Yes. Yeah. You, you are an inspiration. 00:37:01 Roy Well, we're trying, we have to work at it, but all right, Roman, well, tell everybody, somebody needs some relationship coaching. Everything is all intermingled. For us to have a happy, productive life at work, we have to have a happy, productive life at home. Secondly…a few months ago we were taking bids on having some work done here, getting quotes…we chose to go with this one company, great reviews online for the local branch and about 50/50 for outside of my county.  Gave them the papers to file with the city…calls were returned in the beginning, was given a start date of June 1st.  So, now here it is June 4th…no crews, no work being done…gave them a down payment for materials and for paperwork filing.  I went to the city of Palm Bay today and found that no paperwork for permits were filed…so, now I know the date of June 1st was to shut me up.  I'm a radio guy…shut up?  AS IF I KNOW HOW!  Called the local office and got the owner's number.  Gave him a call.  Left a long stern message, kept it civil.  I believe in second chances, so I'm giving them a second chance to do right!  IF they do not do right come Monday…anyone know what kind of lawyer I'll need to call?  Gotta keep telling myself…GRATITUDE! One person who was arrested by Paul came to the funeral home to tell my Aunt Susie and Uncle Max how Paul treated them with kindness and respect. People would knock on my Aunt Susie’s and Uncle Max’s front door and ask if they could come in and talk about Paul. Letters and cards would arrive, sent by people describing an interaction they had with Paul and how he made a profound impact on them.

Key Talking Points Justin’s toolbox has been at the business for 11 years, since the beginning- wants to be able to bring it home and work on the business instead of in the business 2 weeks of working in bays to catch everyone up turned into 6 weeks Saw production gaps between some of the technicians- was able to work side by side and teach younger technicians how he plans his work and gets it done. See if you can combine work orders. Realized the need for more SOP’s for the shop to follow for both in the bays and in the office  Downside- losing focus on business Had technician from dealership lined up to come work in business to replace his spot- technician ultimately decided to stay at the dealership. When the technician told Justin he was staying, Justin left things on very good terms to keep an open door for possible future. A customer came in for his BMW evacuate the refrigerant so he could replace the compressor- was back in the shop within an hour and a half time. Justin and the service advisor were impressed and asked about his experience. He loves working on cars but never worked in a professional setting. Gave him an application and is currently working in the shop on a trial basis. 2005 Annual Report   Big Cat Rescue's Mission Statement:  To provide the best home we can for the animals in our care and to reduce the number of cats that suffer the fate of abuse, abandonment or extinction by teaching people about the plight of the cats, both in the wild and in captivity, and how they can help through their behavior and support of better laws to protect the cats.   Advances:  In 2005 the IRS reported that there are 964,000 registered charities in the U.S.  Only 81 of them qualify for and display the BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards seal.  Big Cat Rescue is one of them. This seal confirms that the organization meets all 23 of the Standards for Charity Accountability. We have become so well known in the area, that our volunteers complain about wearing our logos in public because everyone loves us so much they just have to stop us and tell us so. Howie Baskin helped a Girl Scout troop organize our first Golf Tournament which netted 15,000.00. Invested in undercover surveillance equipment to shed light on the dirty truth behind the exhibition and exploitation of exotic cats.   Animal Care:  We added more whole prey to our cats' weekly diets and switched over to a prepared diet created by Natural Balance that improves their health via vitamin supplements. Faith the baby bobcat was upgraded to a much larger and more challenging Cat-a-tat where she had to learn to “out-fox” her food. Later, after completing her survival training, she was released onto 17,000 acres of pristine bobcat habitat.  President Jamie Veronica, and the interns track her weekly to insure that she is thriving on her own. We had to turn away 85 big cats that were no longer wanted by their owners but we rescued Snorkle the tiger from a circus owner and brought in tigers: India, Nyla, King, Princess and Narak from the circus. Rescued three baby mountain lions who were orphaned by a hunter in Idaho.  Their names are Artemis, Ares and Orion and they were neutered and spayed this year so that they can always stay together.   Staff and Volunteer Training:  Jamie Veronica got licensed by the state to be able to pick up injured or escaped wildlife.  In the past it had to be brought to us by someone who was so licensed .  Cathy Mayeski and Jen Rusczcyk completed the Clicker Training Expo in CA and now have 57 of our cats in the Operant Conditioning program. Jen organized and developed the Enrichment program making it one of the best in the country.   Jamie Veronica took the Intern Program to the next level and manages their housing, group activities and scheduling.  The Volunteer Committee re-wrote the Volunteer Program and the Intern Program and have updated ALL of our volunteers level of certification through testing. Some of our members attended the EARS training. (Emergency Animal Rescue Service) Hired green shirt Sharon Marszal to work filling orders for the gift shop and sent her to eBay training classes.  Read books on Non Profit Marketing, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash to perfect our skills in these areas.   Education:  Our Education Director, Kathryn Quaas, is partnering with the Florida Aquarium to promote several joint efforts for schools and summer camps. We did legislative presentations to Stetson Law University on three occasions this year promoting a register to vote drive.  The Fur Ball CD of games, puzzles, screensavers and more were given to the 500 attendees with 300 extra being used as rewards for children who answer questions correctly during her presentations and field trips.   Howard began working with the Greenfund Network to create a joint venture in schools where kids turn in ink cartridges for recycling in bags that tell about Big Cat Rescue so that both their school and the sanctuary can benefit from the program.  Some kids may not care about raising money for scholarships, but they do care about saving tigers and this is a way to inspire them to keep these cartridges out of the landfills.   Filmed the rescue of three orphaned baby cougars with David Hurd Productions for use on the Animal Planet's new series that will be aired repeatedly, and thus help educate people about what is happening to their precious wildlife in the name of sport.  Six local libraries now stock our video, The Big Cat Picture in their documentary sections.   The portion of our web site that is devoted to education aimed at children through learning games has grown in leaps and bounds.  We added hundreds and hundreds of puzzles, free wallpapers, free screensavers and other educational activities that feature photos and drawings of the cats along with our message that “Exotic Animals Don't Make Good Pets!”  Began compiling worksheets and coloring pages for a educational handbook for students next year. Added FCAT lesson plans to our Teacher's Resource area. Used the Google grant to broadcast the availability of these teaching aids to students, their parents and teachers.  We participated in a study with Odd Cast that resulted in us being awarded 100,000 free streams for our Virtual Hosts.   Legislation:  Founder, Carole Baskin was unanimously elected to serve on the Board of the Humane USA Political Action Committee.  She was also appointed to the steering committee of the Florida Chapter of Humane USA. We enlisted the Florida Animal Control Association to help us approach the State of Florida in an effort to change the rules to better protect the animals and the public.  We were joined by HSUS and Humane USA in this endeavor and have asked the National Fraternity of Police Officers to join us as well. Carole was also appointed by Commissioner Brian Blair to serve on the Animal Advisory Committee and was elected secretary.  In November she was unanimously nominated to serve as Chair of the Animal Advisory Committee. We attended the Tampa Bay Partnership's Tampa Bay Day in Tallahassee and met with 25% of the state's legislators to ask for better animal protection laws.   We began promoting our Legislative portion of our web site that is dedicated to educating the public and legislators about animal welfare bills. 1,111,647 pages of bills were viewed by visitors.  We rallied support for the Federal bills to stop canned hunts with an aggressive online letter campaign to get people to ask their senators and representatives to co-sponsor this bill that would make it illegal to transport exotic animals across state lines for the purpose of injuring or killing them. We promoted hundreds of bills at the state and federal level. In just the first year we were responsible for 20,969 letters being sent to congress on behalf of the animals.   We launched our first online petitions and gathered 494 signatures on one to ban breeding and sale of exotic cats and 1878 signatures on 10 things we want legislators to know which includes the banning and breeding of exotic cats. We also launched our first online polls to see how people feel about issues such as animals in the circus, bobcats and cougars being hunted, exotic animal pets and more.  Response has been terrific and we are finding that roughly 85% of the public loves animals and want better laws to protect them and 90% do not want to see big cats being made to perform.   Attended AZA's Legislative session and Taking Action for Animals in Washington, DC.  Met with our Senators and Congressmen in D.C. and here locally to discuss the exotic animal issues. County Administrator, Pat Bean and Animal Services Director, Bill Armstrong both toured and interacted with the cats, learning about how we use operant conditioning for emergency preparedness.  We hosted tours for Hillsborough County Commissioners: Kathy Castor, Ronda Storms, Jim Norman, Ken Hagan, and for aids to Brian Blair and Mark Sharp.  We also toured Pinellas County Commissioners: Ronnie Duncan and Karen Seel.  We introduced these commissioners and State Representatives Kim Berfield and aids for Kevin Ambler along with team players for gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis so that they have a better understanding of why Florida needs laws to prevent the private ownership of dangerous exotic pets.   Requested that we be appointed to the state's Captive Wildlife Committee but were denied as the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission decided to comprise the committee of exotic pet owners.  State Legislators made it known later that the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission “had better fix this exotic animal problem or the legislature was going to get involved and FWCC was not going to like it.”  Began working on a memo with the help of former gubernatorial candidate Bill McBride's law firm that affirms a County's right to impose laws that do regulate exotic animal ownership as long as those laws do not single out exotic pet from other provisions that would apply to all.  In the past the Counties often thought they were helpless in the face of the constitutional amendment that had granted the Fish and Game agency the ability to act outside of the legislative process that all other states enjoy.   Fundraising and Marketing:  We had our first ever $10,000.00 day of tours and private tours in December.  Implemented our first direct mail campaign at Christmas with a request to support the three orphaned cougars.  We doubled the price of the Fur Ball tickets from 55.00 and 75.00 to 100.00 and 150.00 and raised a net of $60,000.00 (up from 40,465 last year) with only 500 attendees.  This enabled everyone to have a better time because there were no lines and our volunteers found it much easier to deal with 500 people at check out as opposed to 850 like we had last year at lower prices.  We discovered last year that at 55.00 we were just breaking even and for people for whom that was a lot of money we found that they did not spend money in the auctions so we had to evaluate whether the Fur Ball was a donor thank you party or a fundraiser and deciding it was the latter made the agonizing decision to double the price.   Opened an online store on eBay to reach a broader market with our logo's items and unique offerings. We tried MagFundraising.com for the first time and raised almost 3000.00 in magazine subscription commissions.  Our volunteers raised $3000.00 wrapping books at Borders Books.  Invested in Telosa's Donor Management software. We were given the front and back page of the Tampa Tribune's Commentary section and have been on several national programs including CNN, Fox, Animal Atlas on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.   We purchased a second terminal for our Point of Sale system due to the overlap of tours beginning and ending in the gift shop.  In Jan our web site was averaging 170,000 hits per day and by the end of the year was reaching more than 300,000 hits per day with a surge to 744,000 hits per day thanks to a Google Adwords grant for unlimited advertising for three months. Cox radio gave us more than 100 on air spots to advertise the Valentine's Day wedding at Big Cat Rescue and gave us 300 more free advertising spots on air for our golf tournament on two stations. They also donated 300 spots for the Fur Ball.   Jamie Veronica's photos have been used in Biodiversity Magazine by Tropical Conservancy, and we created a Stock Photo portion of our website where featured artists donate their work and we sell the images online.  We set up Cafe Press and Zazzle sites to sell her images to raise money for the cats.  We were asked to apply for the WEDU's charity awards for our fundraising and marketing achievements.  The ink recycling program with Greenfund Network has succeeded far beyond our initial goals thanks to marketing the envelopes through our newsletter with now has a circulation of more than 35,000 homes.  We are candidates for the Webby Awards with the winner to be announced in 2006.   We created several video productions that tell viewers what we do including Orange Sky by Jamie Veronica and the Two Minute Tour by David Hurd.  In addition to this we created several new interactive slideshows including one called Born To Be Free that contrasts life in cages to life in the wild.  We started our first automatic direct deductions for banks and credit cards and a program with Albertson's where participating card carriers can have part of their purchases donated to us.  We created our first Big Cat Travel site that allows people to get the best Priceline prices on airfare, car and hotel rental, cruises and event tickets with the commissions paid to Big Cat Rescue.  Carole lost 17 more pounds with Matol and set up www.Matol-Diet.com so that others can lose weight, build their own home business and the commissions go to the cats as well. Volunteer Beth Stewart created and marketed a calendar of our sanctuary called Saving Big Cats.  This calendar was available at Amazon.com, Borders.com and BarnesAndNoble.com and we sold a number on site and on line as well.  The calendar was produced by TideMark Productions and featured photos of our cats for every month and their personal rescue stories.   With the help of Teasdale Worldwide Howard Baskin created our first formal Corporate Sponsorship program, both in general and for the Fur Ball.  We held special kid's tours after Thanksgiving and Christmas and were packed and got a lot of good press coverage for doing something for the kids.  We were in the press 48 times in 2005 and many of these were interviews with Scott Lope.  We were in Glamour Magazine twice, on CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Inside Edition and were instrumental in providing background information for Parade Magazines' piece on the exotic pet trade and for ABC's Prime Time that should air next year.  We have a PSA that was made jointly with the Girl Scouts of America that is airing nationally to encourage young people to get involved and do something good in their community.  We ended the year with money in the bank to begin building our Big Cat Lodge.   Grounds Improvement:  Completed two more tiger Cat-a-tats for the circus tigers in case of emergency. New Cat-a-tats were built for cougars; Mack and Cleo along with hurricane proof dens for each of them.  Cages were reshaped and room additions built for Caracals; Rusty & Sassy and Cachinga & Cachanga.  The same was done for the Serval; Alpha, Bobcats; Alex & Windsong and Banshee.  In addition many of the cats got hammocks, swinging platforms, secondary dens just to play in and Alex & Windsong got a new fort.  Tonga was moved and his old roofless cage was turned into a temporary playground for the three orphaned cougars.   The E-Center was whimsically painted to look like a leopard and the Cabins were painted by volunteer Julie Hanan to look like a tiger.  Butterfly gardens were added by Kathryn Quaas and the kids of summer camp to the Cabin area.  We moved the cavies off the tour route to a much larger enclosure and tore down the old otter cages that they had lived in on the lake.  The area was cleared so that there is a beautiful view of the lake and the tigers and lions beyond now.   Brought in a new Intern home that is a 4BR/2BA and Vern built a deck that is perfect for socializing after a long day of cat chores. Cleared all Brazilian Peppers from the back forty and built a road around the cell tower to make the back parcel more accessible. This area required heavy clearing and then bush hogging of dog fennel and some fill over the concrete to turn it into a lovely park like area.  Stood falling wall back up. Weeded and planted ferns at the beach. Began massive clean up of Styrofoam from lake banks. Bought a new shed for the two new golf carts and a new riding mower.  Added lots of filing cabinets and storage cabinets to the gift shop and office. The fenced waiting area had a cola machine, waterfall and lots of landscaping and mulching added to create a nice place for guests to wait for their tours.  Donor recognition signs were added to this area.   Bought three more acres for alternate access and parking and cleared the land of dog fennel so that we can keep it mowed.  Took on debt for the first time in our history with the purchase of this land.  Began negotiations with Outback and the County on building a multi use Education and Conference Center called the Big Cat Lodge.  Unveiled the new conceptual drawings of this improvement created by Collman and Karsky with help from Genesis at the Fur Ball. Applied for a Planned Development for this additional 3 acres to give us cross access, parking and 6 more residences for interns and volunteers.   Helping Others:  We invited other animal welfare groups to use our Legislative tools in customized banners on their web sites so that they could encourage their visitors to write their representatives about important animal welfare issues. We hosted the Alzheimer's Memory Walk for 600 walkers who raised 50,000 for Alzheimer's victims. Worked with PAKT to help them negotiate a deal with the circus and AZA for promoting responsible, life time care for animals who have had to work for a living. Continued to help ACT by driving the Spay Day trailer each month so that 100-160 cats per month can be spayed.   Charities that we donated to this year in the form of Free Passes to our sanctuary:  100 passes to No More Homeless Pets Adopt-a-thon 30 passes and gift certificate for a Big Cat Expedition to Florida Voices for Animals, Donated a Big Cat Expedition, a Feeding Tour and more to Animal Coalition of Tampa for their Some Enchanted Evening fundraiser and the same again to their Stride For Strays walk-a-thon. Donated the use of our facility to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay for their Volunteer Appreciation party and to National Humane Society for their volunteer and donor recognition party at Christmas. Donated an Expedition and Two for One Passes to SPOT and worked with them to create a segment on Pinellas County's Public Access Channel. Hosted a party for a team of Florida Panther protectors.   We raised 1250.00 each for EARS and HSUS to aid the animal victims of Katrina and 1000.00 each for conservation programs to save the margay in Brazil, to help start an eco tourism lodge in Guyana and to assist Lewa in Africa.   Other:  Gave a private tour to Toronto Blue Jay's Shea Hillenbrand. Customized a golf cart for hurricane use by creating a cat-proof cage to drop down over the carriage so that we can access any part of the property in the event of a cat being loose.   In a year when tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes ravaged the globe and other sanctuaries, even good ones, found themselves considering the euthanasia of their animals rather than let them starve due to the drop in donations we were able to thrive.  We are thankful to our staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this possible and to all of our donors and visitors who kept our cats fed in these worst of times.   The saddest news is that we now have to turn away nearly 100 exotic cats every year, because we cannot afford to take in all of them that are being bred and sold into the entertainment, pet and zoo industries.  The most common victims are Lions, Tigers, Cougars, Servals, Caracals and Bobcats.  We are now devoting more time to raising awareness and trying to get laws enacted that will protect these magnificent creatures from man.   The mission has evolved from just saving the cats that ended up in places like fur farms, hunting ranches and auctions, to making a difference on a global scale. People who come here and spend time with our cats are transformed.  I hear, over and over again, how people feel like their lives were changed forever by knowing these animals on such a personal level.  Many times I have heard visitors say, “I looked into that cat's eyes, and I saw God!”   For many of them, it is the first time that they have ever felt that they were intimately connected with the rest of creation.  It is a wake up call that we are all ONE.   It is my dream to integrate the beauty and majesty of the great cats with the inner awakening we can enhance in our visitors.  By making people more aware, we can make the world a better place.   Our Officers and Board of Directors • President Jamie Veronica (not compensated by BCR) • Vice President & BOD Cathy Mayeski (not compensated by BCR) • Secty/ Treasurer  Vernon C. A few nights ago, I interviewed the brilliant Shy Watson. She is the author of Horror Vacui from House of Vlad press and Cheap Yellow from Civil Coping Mechanisms. Shy is also the co-founder Blush Lit. Her work has appeared in New York Tyrant and Hobart and many other places. I read Horror Vacui and loved it for a lot of reasons. If I had to choose some, it would be because it’s hilarious, and dirty, and beautiful, and sad, and happy, and extremely cathartic. It’s separated into sections: poems, then some microfiction, then Quarantine diaries, which bring the entire thing together quite perfectly and in a way that I’ll never forget. Gave me the chills. In light of that, I thought I would review some of my favorite topics and mentions some projects I have done recently.  1. Episodes 70 with Alex Hobson and Ep 56 with James Wilson about Patents and IP  In these episodes, we covered how the entire patent process works and the steps you should take when you have a new invention idea.  Should first check on uspto.gov to see if patent already exists. My recommendation is to look at images.  If you don't see, file a provisional patent. It's cheap and gives you one year protection before you need full patent.  4. Some projects I was hired for:  Condiment bottle – printed in durable resin and works just like a blow molded PP bottle.  AutoCad blocks – conveyor system that the client could drop in on his manufacturing plant layout to make sure it fits.  5. Tonal shelf  Always looking to create new products that will create passive income.  Can't remember exactly how I thought of creating a product for tonal users, but when I looked at the cost of buying a tonal, I could this was a good market.  If someone is going to spend $4000 on an exercise machine, they have plenty of disposable income. I should be able to sell for $100.  The machine has 4 different handles, so need place to store the extras.  Created a shelf to hold these, make it by 3d printing. Tooling would cost a fortune.  Gave a local guy free samples in return for testing it out for me. Took 9 revisions before I sold the first one. Based on feedback made one more revision for a total of 10.  It has been very successful.

A lighthouse is not interested in who gets its light. It just gives it without thinking. Giving light is its nature. And this is a really powerful quote for me. It reminds me to be consistent. It reminds me to be congruent. It reminds me to keep playing the game, unattached to the outcome, some solid call it delayed gratification, some colleges serving and unattached to the outcome. It's really about running your best race and doing your best every single day, but what's so important about that message is that as business owners, as entrepreneurs, as human beings in your community, in your family and in your life, you are a source of light. And you either recognize it or you don't, but the faster you recognize it, the faster you recognize the power in your light, the intention that your light gives off to the world, the results that it creates, how people are magnetized to your gift and you sharing it. And our jobs are to be a lighthouse and we can't control every boat that comes to shore. We can't control who turns in or turns out that's up to them. But our job is to ruin that constant and consistent source of safety and light. And so that's one of my favorite quotes. A lighthouse is not interested in who gets its light. It just gives it without thinking. Giving light is its nature.I look at entrepreneurs as people that give light. I look at business owners as people that give light, we put out these beacons of light into the world and we guide people home. We say, this is the path. This is how to get here. We have a solution for you. We have a community for you. We have a service for you. We have a product for you, and it's in our job to continue to do that. And there's going to be people that take it and then don't do it. There's going to be people that come and leave the center and people that pass by, even though we know we need it, but our job. Is to remain constant and consistent on attached to the outcome.Where do I find my ideal customers? Where do I find my ideal customers? That depends. It depends on a lot of variables. And it doesn't matter what phase of your business you're in, just starting out or massively successful. Our customers change. The market, changes. The world changes. Our customers are pretty iterative and we have to be really plugged in. First you have to ask self who is your ideal customer? And not like I'm a soccer mom that drives a minivan. But who is your ideal customer? Some of the questions that you can ask yourself, question number one, what do they want? What does your ideal customer want? What do they spend their time doing?What do they pay attention to even outside of your market or focus? What are some of the other things about this person that defines them? That's step one is you have to know your customer and my amazing copywriter, Alex. Who's been on the show. Gave this exercise in this episode and it's so powerful, but when you really want to sit down and understand your customer, like who is it?Once you get a clear picture, I want you to sit down and design a day in their life. Like literally like on a piece of paper with time, like a day in the life, like every moment Oh, What time do they wake up? When they wake up, what do they do? Do they go for the morning pee or do they go for the cup of coffee?Do they stretch and meditate or do they go right for their phone? I want you to, to the T like 7:00 AM, seven Oh four, seven, 18. This is the breakfast I eat. They're always late. They always smell coffee on their shirt. I want you to take the time. I designed this day. This exercise is absolutely mind blowing by the way, but I want you to design a day in the life of your ideal customer.When do they pick the kids up? What kind of car do they drive? What do they listen to in the car? What are they thinking about when they listening to it? What do they do at work? How many pee breaks they take, even though they don't have to pee, like how many breaks? Like I want you to really put yourself in the shoes of your ideal customer.And so when you're asking yourself, who is your customer, you want to embody. That customer, like you want to be in their life. If you took a pair of glasses and put them on, I want those glasses to be the lens of their life. I want you to see what they see. I want you to feel what they feel. I want you to do what they do.I want you to eat what they eat and yes, you can talk about food. And still sell business and marketing, you find common ground. And so when you think about who is your customer, I want you to do this. So ask yourself these questions what do they want, what do they spend their time doing? And what do they pay attention to?What shows do they watch? What are they watching on Netflix? What books are they reading? The more information like the more embodied you can be about who that customer is, the faster you have, all the information you need. To identify. How do you find your ideal customer? So step number one is who is your customer?Step number two, which is a part of that exercise and then pulling some parts of that exercise is where do they hang out? Like where does your ideal customer hang out? Are they hanging out on LinkedIn? Do they listen to podcasts? Do they go to local meetups and farmer's markets? Do they hang out in Facebook groups?Do they hang out on in-person events? They hang out on virtual events today, not use social media. Do they read magazines? Like where. Do your ideal customers hang out now, of course, or to know where your ideal customers hang out, you have to know who your ideal customer is, right? That's why step one is know who your ideal customer is.Step two is know where your ideal customers hang out and be specific. Are they hanging out at the train station or do they get a cup of coffee at Starbucks and sit there for an hour. But. The reason I say this is because you're not going to know where to find them until you think about all the avenues and possibilities about where they say, where they hang out.So it depends on what side of my business that you go to, but like for you listening to this podcast, I would venture to say that I'm not the only podcast that you listen to. And I love that, but that means that I know that some of my ideal customers are podcast listeners. And so that means if I go on other podcasts, I have a likelihood of finding my ideal customer on those podcasts.But you have to ask yourself where do your ideal customers hang out? Are they shopping on Etsy? Are they playing around on Pinterest? Are they on a social media app that nobody else uses? Are they on Reddit today? They invest in Bitcoin. Like you have to do the time and figure this out. And once you figure it out, you have the second ingredient needed.So when we think about where do I find my ideal customer, step number one, you have to identify who they are. So who is your customer? Step number two is you have to basically identify all the places where they hang out. You have to make a hypothesis. Like I think they're here. I think they're here.I think they're here. That's step number two. Step number three is you actually have to validate that's where they hang out. You have to validate that's where they hang out. So for example, I know I know now, but let's say I assumed, or I made this hypothesis. My ideal customers hang out on marketing podcasts.I think that my ideal customers listen to other marketing podcasts and business podcasts, and I'm like, Oh, that would be a pretty safe assumption. So let me start. I personally have been interviewed in over 1500 podcasts. I get less people from a marketing podcast than I do from like mindset business theory and even some personal development ones.Because I tend to talk about a lot of those different things. I found that a lot of people that just hang out and just listen to marketing podcasts, don't like what I share. Because I don't share jest strategies and tactics. And so step number three is that you have to validate that's where your ideal customer actually hangs out.And so this is where actually, if you're watching this on video, I just rolled up my sleeves. That's really funny how my brain works. I was foreshadowing what I was going to say. This is where you have to roll up your sleeves and you have to go be in a relationship with people. So you can get inputs and feedback that's where your ideal customer is or wants to be, or that they hang out there.So you have to interact with these people in different areas. And so let's say the hangout in Facebook groups, you go in there, you actually engage with them, you, but on their posts, you ask them questions, you engage on their posts, you're not selling your stuff. You're finding out information about these people and seeing if they're your ideal customer, you get to know them. You ask them questions. If there's anything you can do to support them, you get on a call. If you can, you support them organically. But if it goes beyond your container of set, helping for free, of course, they can become a paid customer. That's the ultimate dream of this.Like God, I think all my customers hang out in mom's groups for. Oh, body, weight workouts on Saturday mornings and your interview with them and you're engaging and they're all, DM-ing you like, I really want your help. And you're actually getting DM so much. You have to charge great.You found your ideal customer charge money, and there you go. But the inverse of that is that when you validate where they are, you might think God, all my moms are hanging out in that group. It's for this and boom. And you start interacting and engaging and they are potentially your ideal customer.Not yet. They're not willing to invest in a meal plan. Or nutrition or accountability, like maybe they're in that group, but their needs are fully met and what you have to offer. Isn't a pain point for them. And then you're like, all right, cool. These people aren't actually let me go to the next one.Let me find the health and fitness group for public speakers or entrepreneurs who don't have time to work out and then start there. But you have to get feedback, right? Your ideas are great. But until you put your idea into the world to get feedback, you don't really know what it can look like. You can spend all day designing.This is who my customer is. This is how I support them. This is my offer. This is boom. And if you do that behind closed doors, you're going to have this illusion that this is it. This is it. This is nailed it. And then you launch it and you're sad because you don't get it validated. It doesn't take off like you think it does.And then you're left, frustrated and resentful where. If you get really clear and in the part of your process of making this, you go validate it and you go find these people. Then you go out there and you go engage with them. And here's the thing I literally am like, Oh, my ideal client hangs out on Facebook in my Facebook group.A lot of them don't a lot of them refer people who add me as a friend. And then when they add me as a friend and I send them a video message, they become my ideal client. And it's really interesting in how they all go out. But you have to validate that they hang out there. And so you have to build these relationships.You have to show up consistently, you have to put some content out there, you have to engage and you have to test the market. You have to test the market, think about it. Like you're walking through the mall of the 1990s and they're handing out orange chicken. What they're really doing is validating whether you're a customer or not.Because if you walk by and take the sample. Then you have the potential of becoming a customer. So normally once you took the sample, then they had a conversation, Oh, do you want more? Here's boom. But if you walked by and didn't take the sample, they didn't chase you down and try to convince you and then build their whole marketing about people who refuse our samples that we try to convince to buy orange chicken.No, they validated the offer. They were getting our attention. They were doing it. And this is what you must do. And so what does that tangibly look like? One example for me, one example for me is I have been a lot of Facebook groups. I get added to them all the time. More than I count, and here's my PSA.Here's my declaimer. My disclaimer, please stop adding people to Facebook groups without their permission. Like pretty pretty. Pretty pleased. That would be absolutely amazing. I would love that. But Facebook groups are an awesome place. And what I didn't know is I joined a mastermind and a mastermind pretty much like mine.Pretty much like mine and I joined this group and naturally I just started engaging in the group cause I was paying to be in this mastermind. So I'm engaging in the group. I'm engaging in the group, I'm engaging in the group and I'm like engaging, and then I'm engaging and I'm offering advice and offering feedback.And I start getting DMD all the time. Oh my God, I want to work with you. I want to work through. And I was like, ah I don't play daddy games. I don't play mommy daddy games. So I actually reached out to the mastermind owner. I was like, Hey, listen, like I'm not doing this boom. And they're like, actually, no, I don't want to run this mastermind anymore.Boom. And they're like take them. And I ended up by just showing up in this group as a student and adding value, found a lot of mastermind members and the timing was impeccable that I did not think that was going to happen. Like I was accidentally put into that place. And into that spot and I established these relationships and then eventually they turned into customers and I launched a mastermind because of it.I completely launched a mastermind because of it. And so that happens. It happens all the time. Another one for me is public speaking. Now I love speaking, but I don't advertise myself as a speaker at all, but I tell all my friends, Hey, if you do an event, if I can add value in any way, if I can add value in any way, shape or form, please let me come.Like you don't have to pay me. Like I love speaking. I love answering questions. I love engaging with people. And so I'll never forget this. I had a coffee meeting with one of my buddies and he was like doing this. And I was like, yeah, do this. This is what I would do. And he's Hey, do you want to come to my event?I'm like, yeah, I'd love to. I was like, just buy me a hotel room, cover my travel. And he like, okay. And so I go to this event, I'm not selling from stage. I don't have an offer. I don't have a booth. I don't have any of it. None of it. I'm like, I literally am here to serve. People's faces off. And I was like, I just want to help.And of course I'm like, okay, there's 800 people here. Some of them are potentially my audience, but I just said yes, like I say yes to all of these opportunities because I love them. But here's what happened. I ended up giving this keynote and because I wasn't selling, I was literally doing a Q and a, the whole time.I ended up closing multiple seven figures of business from this event over the course of a year. And all I did was answer questions. I'm like, God, when I'm done, if I can answer your questions anyway, just come find me in the hallway. And I answered questions for 10 hours, but all I was doing was adding value and here's, what's not, I didn't think that this was my audience.I literally went because I was like, yeah, if it can add value, but If you looked at me on paper, like George, you want to come? Boom boom. I would have never, in a million years thought that this was my audience. I literally, it was a kind of nice down. Most of the principles I teach didn't apply it wasn't for that type of business and it ended up becoming it and it showed me a part of a market.Where I had an ideal customer that I didn't know was an ideal customer that I wouldn't have gotten without that feedback. And so I show up, I give this keynote, I answered all these questions. I ended up building seven figures of revenue just off that talk, but it actually expanded my entire outlook of who my ideal audience was.And a pain point and a possibility that I never would have thought of nor would I have known where to find those people. So those people were all Amazon sellers. And I was talking about e-commerce businesses, customer journeys, email marketing, social media marketing, and this audience was doing a lot of advertising on Amazon, where you can't do a lot of those things.But what it introduced to me was this pain point of Amazon companies that didn't want to be on Amazon anymore. So then I got to shift and I had this whole consulting arm of my business of helping Amazon customers build a brand and presence the right way off of Amazon. And I only got that because I validated.I validated that offer accidentally. But if you think about all the times you intentionally do it, what would that look like? If you're like, God, my ideal audience, there are these people. They listen to these podcasts. Let me go get on a couple of those podcasts and you go reach out God. I'd love to come on your show.I'd love to add value. You get interviewed and you have an easy call to action. Shoot me a DM or send me an email. And you go on the show. There's a hundred people who listen, and six people DMU. Great. If you go on the show, a hundred people listen, a hundred people, tell them a great go to show it a hundred people listen, and no one DMV.Great. Keep going, give yourself a control, but go on five, 10 episodes of the same caliber talk consistently about the same thing, have the same call to action. And if it doesn't work. Or you're not getting any feedback. That, that isn't potentially where your ideal customer hangs out and you make an adjustment, or if you do know you double down on it.And so those are just some examples, right? Another one, actually, I'll give you one more because this is my favorite one. I'll give you another one. When I started consulting on business and marketing. So when I started consulting on ethically scaling your business right through customer journey, email marketing, Facebook ads.I was literally like all marketing companies. Boom boom. And I'm finding them, but I got invited to an event I used to go to as a food blogger. I'm not speaking, I'm just an attendee. It was expo West. So there's 5,000 brands there, but they're all food brands. They're all natural food brands, companies, like vital proteins or Bubs natural. Those are Mark's daily Apple or, any big food companies as Croix. Is there, Stonehill, like all these food companies, like the biggest. CPG consumer packaged good food companies in the world are hot this event. And so I'm going to see all of my friends because I was a food blogger for a good, I don't know, seven years at this point.And so I'm going, and I'd only been consulting for maybe six months, but I was good. My pipeline was following everything. And so I start walking around and seeing all my friends and all my friends are people that I used to be an affiliate for. They'd send me their product. I'd promote it. I do it.And they're all like, what are you up to now? And I'm like, Oh, I'm consulting. They're like, I have that problem. And then literally the next two years of my life was spent just consulting health, food companies on how to build and scale a customer journey. Another one is you go to an event as an attendee and I've gone to the quote unquote you're one funnel away event.And I just sit in the audience. I network with people. I ask them questions. I ask them what they're doing, why they're there, what they're looking to learn. And if I can add value in any way I do, I'll ask them what they're doing. I'll get their contact info. Like I'll genuinely try to support them and I'll just build a relationship and a friendship.And then they end up working with me or they end up in my mastermind. Some of them have ended up as business partners, but I'm constantly out there testing my offer in the water and in relationships, I do it via DM. I do it at events. I do it at the coffee shop. I've literally, before I move on to the next point.My favorite one is three of my best clients have come from airplanes. No joke. Knock, knock, gotta lie. I got to consult a professional MBA team, the CEO of Playboy and the CEO of one of the largest apparel and shoe companies in the world because they sat next to me on an airplane. No joke. No joke. One of them, I was flying home from Ireland, sitting in the front of the plane, sat next to me.And whether he liked it or not, I was going to ask him questions, which I did. Cause I'm pretty forthcoming. I've just getting to know people like, Hey, what do you do? And I'm not like, Hey, this is what I do. I'm like, what do you do? What do you do? Tell me what this, Oh my God. Why are you seven feet tall?This, it must be basketball. I'm not even a sports fan, but what do you do? And it turns into a conversation. Another one Hey, it's so good to meet you. That's an amazing book. What are you reading? And I just try to talk to people and engage with people. And I actually got three of my best ever stories, case studies and consulting clients because they simply.Made the mistake of booking the seat on the airplane next to me. And I don't say that, seriously, like I'm completely joking. I feel like it's fun to sit next to me, but those are opportunities where I'm like, God, I never thought that my ideal client would be hanging out on airplanes. And my wife's no matter what, wherever you fly first class, cause you always meet somebody.And I meet I've met somebody. I met somebody who was a, he founded a plumbing parts company. So you remember the shower, like in your shower, the drain on the bottom of your shower, where they customize those well heat. Basically started the first company that did that. So I end up sitting next to this guy who is worth like $3 billion because he did that.And I had no value to Adam. We just talked and talked, but I got his contact info. We stayed in touch, but I was like, wow, I never would have thought. And so you have to take your offer, take your expertise and you have to go put it into the world. You have to validate it and test it. And so step number one is you have to know who your ideal customer is.Step number two, you have to figure out or make some hypothesis is. Is that right? Hypothesis is of where they hang out. And step number three is you have to validate that they actually hang out there. And what you might find in that treasure trove is pockets, where they hung out. You didn't think about spots where you thought they hung out.They didn't really, but it will give you the information and the feedback required to adjust what you have to do. Now, the magic key, because there is a magic key. To this all working the magic key that makes absolutely all of this work is you have to know what you're going to do with your customer's attention or potential customers attention when you have it.And so if you get your customer's attention without a clear, next step, you've wasted their time. You've wasted, their time completely wasted their time. And so you have to have a clear design journey or next step that people can take with you and your brand. Regardless of where you capture their attention and you're like what does that mean?I'm like, that could just mean that you get their phone number and you have a process to intentionally follow up with them. Two to three times via text. It could mean that you get their phone number to schedule a call, to support them. It could mean that you get their information and give them an email that delivers on what it is that you promised.It's your job to know what's on your menu. And then it's your job to help give them what's on your menu in the most effective way for them. And so I'll give you a tangible example. When I meet people on an airplane, I actually can't text them on the airplane unless the wifi is really good. But I normally always meet people on an airplane and I'll get some part of their information.And I literally do this every single time. Hey, Oh my God, it was so great. I'm like, I'll make this really easy for you. When we land, I'm going to send you a picture of my face with my contact info. And then I would love to schedule a call to see how I can support you anymore. And so would you respond with like how to book your assistant, your counter link?And they're like, yeah. Cool. So I always send that text, but I also set a reminder in my phone for seven days later to follow up. If I haven't heard back and I'm like, Hey man, I don't think the tax went through the airport. Wifi is all craziness, but I would love to get on that call. How are you? How's it been?How was the blank event that you went to? How was the seeing your family after being home for seven days? And I personalize it and then they'll normally respond. I've actually never had anyone not respond. And so then we get on the call and then when we're on the call, I really clearly know on the call, if I'm going to be able to support them.So if we get on a call, I'm like, God, I can support them. It's easy. It's really clear. I have a course for you. I recommend my podcast for you. Here's an asset for you or I'll hire you consulting. And if I can, I'm like, who do I know that I can introduce them to? And I'm like, God, I can't help them, but I know so-and-so let me introduce them to my copywriter, Alex.So let me introduce them to my friend who runs this. And so then I'll make the introduction and then I'll set a reminder on my phone seven days later to follow up like, Hey, may the introduction make sure they're both good, but if you hoard attention, And do nothing with it. It wastes your time and it wastes their time.And so the most important thing for making this work, the most important thing of answering the quote, unquote, my air quote question of where do I find my ideal customers is once you know who they are. Where they hang out and you validate that they hang out there. You have to know if you get that attention.And when you get that attention, what is the next step that you're going to do with it? You can automate it. You can do it manually. But the worst thing you can do is collect quote unquote business cards that you do, nothing with. You can collect contacts that you do nothing with. You can collect emails that you do nothing with, but none of them are going to do you or them any good.And you have to think about the receiving it. When you meet somebody and they get excited and you get them excited and you're like, yeah. And you give them their contact card and they don't hear from you for three months until you're like, Oh my God, I forgot that. Doesn't make them feel good. It's not going to be a positive thing.But when you have a plan, you're like, God, yeah, every time I get somebody's number, I'm going to send them this. And then a boom. Then you're having an accurate picture of if this is a good person, like a good customer, that your process is dialed. If it doesn't work, they weren't a customer in the first place, but you're committed to doing something with that attention because you took the time to capture it.And as the lighthouse analogy States, when you capture it, there has to be another beam of light and another beam of light and another beam of light guiding them home to safety. It doesn't do a boat any good when it's out, stuck in the middle of storm, that it sees the light once and then the light disappears that doesn't help them.So the key to making all of this work is that there's always a clear next step with what you do, and you're not hoarding attentio
