Nicolas Robbe is the CEO of Hoverlay in Acton, Massachusetts. In 2016, he left his job as Chief Marketing Officer at Dynatrace and re-engaged with one of his passions—augmented reality. The space was going through a profound transformation, and his goal was to create new technology and cool new tools for the public. In this episode of More Intelligent Tomorrow, host Dave Anderson talks to Nicolas about his work bringing augmented reality to screens. Nicolas describes how AR can bring deeper meaning to our experiences, associated opportunities and challenges, and the need for technologies that have a positive influence—promoting empathy and understanding instead of distancing people from one another.AR, he says, has the power to activate cognitive circuitry to convey emotion, promoting community connection and generating empathy and understanding. “As we live our lives, we're seeking meaning, looking for a deeper connection with the places we go and with the people around us. This medium is designed extremely well for that task, the same way the web is well-suited for sharing information and transacting.”Nicolas has always had a passion for understanding the nature of interactions between humans and systems and reducing the cognitive load on people when trying to transmit information to them. He describes multiple layers. One involves figuring out how to use visual metaphors to communicate and bring information into the physical world through a screen. Another involves getting off the screen to where the camera becomes a sort of browser—something a user can place content into just as they place images on a webpage. He explains how it works from a user perspective: They hold their phone, open the app, and see the video feed go through—as if they were taking photos. However, with AR, the camera is able to insert pixels and content into the field. “The magic is that the user creates the illusion of presence to help them feel the content. There are many techniques for creating the illusion so the brain accepts that it's real. The user holds their phone, sees the content, and plays along. The content is usually meaningful to their location.”Asked how virtual reality compares with augmented reality, Nicolas says, “VR is about taking you away from your reality and giving you, perhaps, a better reality or an experience you couldn't have in the physical world, with everything that entails. AR, on the other hand, tries to reconnect you with your physical environment. It could be a park, a building, (or) a kitchen. But it starts and ends with the location—the context—then augments it so your experience of that moment and location is more meaningful, more fun, more engaged. #18 Nancy Stratford has researched her family history for over 50 years and still has not reached the point of being “finished.” Nancy looks for ways to share what she learns with family and strangers alike, like writing a family cookbook or a local history of the Island Park, Idaho area. Her grandmother was the owner of the Bigg’s Family restaurant and she grew up waitressing in the Pocono Mountains. Nancy was the oldest of 3 girls and upon graduation went to Gettysburg College where she graduated in Biology with minors in Physics and Math. She started graduate school but became ill and soon married. Nancy had 3 children and moved frequently in her first marriage. She divorced and married her true sweetheart Ray Stratford who had 3 children of his own. Together they would become the “Brady Bunch family” and were married for 43 years. Ray and Nancy met and lived in upstate New York for many years, Ray worked at General Electric as a Harmonics Engineering expert. Nancy ran a food co-op, and became a professional volunteer, writing newsletters, serving as the PTA president, and active church involvement including teaching 8 years of Early Morning seminary (6:00 am) to high school students. They retired in 1990 and moved to Island Park Idaho, where Ray had maintained family property. Here they built a second cabin near the families original Tie Hack Cabin. Ray and Nancy served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Johannesburg South Africa during the end of Apartheid. They traveled the world from Egypt to Sweden. When living in Island Park, Idaho Nancy became the President of the local Historical Society. Nancy began writing weekly articles for the local newspaper on historical topics. One article series written on the Nez Perce Band was submitted for a National Award for Western writers. Nancy won first place. This prompted her to think about writing a full book on the History of Island Park. She had collected first-hand information, stories and knowledge. But she thought about the project with little progress for over 10 years. When Ray was in his last year fighting cancer, Nancy promised him she would finish the book. With the help of her daughter, Nancy put down the information needed to write her first professionally printed book. Nancy has started and maintained several book groups over her lifetime and currently reads about 2 books a week. Being the oldest living member of her extended family, she claims nearly 100 close relatives. They all know of her love of people, place and reading. The harvesting of data has been aided by the vast data collection by big Tech Companies like Google and Facebook whose business model relies on knowing more about their users then their users know about themselves. The combination of state and corporate mass surveillance of the digital sphere has obvious consequences for both freedom of expression and information. Private conversations are rarely ever truly private and the centralization of communication platforms allows both governments and corporations to censor and control the flow of information. This development has changed public perception of the digital age from one of unlimited freedom, promise and possibilities to cynicism, fear and paranoia. But the age of mass surveillance was not ushered in with the Internet. In fact just as today mass surveillance was dominated by the leading liberal democracy of its day, when Great Britain laid the foundation at the outbreak of World War I. And as in the 21. century the issues that drove the push for mass surveillance and censorship at scale was national security and fears of extremism, disinformation and propaganda. With me to discuss the history of mass surveillance and its consequences for freedom of expression and information is Andreas Marklund who is the head of research at the ENIGMA Museum of Communication, in Copenhagen. In this conversation we will explore: How Britain built a system of mass surveillance through controlling and tapping global communication cables during WWI How Britain´s interception of the so-called Zimmerman telegram changed the course of history How “fake news” and propaganda became a main concern and cause for censorship and manipulation of information by governments How news agencies like Reuters became involved in this communication war through the influence of the British Ministry of Information How telephone communications were systematically surveilled and censored in Scandinavia How mass surveillance and censorship justified by war became useful tools for more general surveillance How the development of radio caused panics among governments who could no longer control or access the flow of information across borders? Sharon Maxwell is a clinical psychologist with more than 30 years of experience. Chelsea has a masters in education and has been working with her mom for 5 years to bring information about sexuality in the digital age to families and schools—and a larger message about navigating parenting in the digital age. I first met Sharon about 7 or 8 years ago when she spoke at my son’s school about talking to your kids about sex. (It starts earlier than you think!) Since then, I feel like so much has changed. Sharon believes that we have less control over the environment our kids are in on a daily basis: “If you want to be the person that acculturates your child and give them what your values are as a family, your capacity to do that has diminished.” Sharing values is really important because it affects how we approach all kinds of questions. One of the ways Sharon and Chelsea like to frame this discussion is with the phrase, In our family, so In our family, we believe that ..., in our family we think this is what’s important … Beyond values, it’s important for kids to understand how their brain works and how apps and other technology are designed to manipulate them.  We talk about:  Talking with teens about ways in which technology is actually manipulating how you spend your time and how you think about very important issues.  Understanding how your brain works, so you can understand why it’s hard to stop playing a game or disengage from devices Learning to exercise self-control, including tools like what to do with the energy of wanting something Phones and other technology as a distraction from doing hard things and the effect on developmental milestones—and how parents use these things as distraction too Teaching kids to use technology, the same way you would teach them to drive a car Being a creator, not just a consumer Talking with your kids about values, specifically around entertainment, information, and communication BIO Sharon Maxwell, Ph.D., is a psychologist, author, and educator. That may checking messages instead of talking to other parents at pick up, or scrolling though Facebook because you don’t feel like making dinner, or picking up your phone with no plan because you are bored and don’t know what to do. Sharon and Chelsea talk a lot about helping our kids with technology use, but start with yourself. Simply notice how you are using your phone and other technology. PRACTICE SELF-CONTROL. Start by being aware of desire. Ask, on a scale of 1–10, how much do you want this? Feel the energy of different desire levels in your body. What can you do with that energy of wanting? How can you transform it into something else? Could you create something with it? Save it up? You can try this exercise with your kids … or try it yourself next time you find yourself really wanting something. TALK ABOUT VALUES. You can start with In this family …  to frame the discussion. Try focusing on communication, information, and education. Sharon offers some questions to get started. Communication: What are your values around communication? Does what you say reflect who you are as a human no matter what media you are using? Information: How do you know something is true or not true? What are your values in terms of passing on information that you’re not sure is true? Entertainment: When is it okay to entertain yourself with another five minutes of Candy Crush versus when is it not okay? How are you going to integrate this new capacity to be entertained or distracted anytime you feel like it? With all the free online content out there to educate yourself, why would you bother paying for information or training? There are a couple ways to approach this as different people will obviously have different perspectives but there is a reason why all this free motivational and inspirational content is so readily available. The easy answer is that it’s click bait and obviously intended to provide you general information to motivate you to purchase their product or service. This can be ok as it’s a common practice for marketing but when it comes to information, you must be sure to research on your own to validate the information you receive. While the amount of free information is plentiful, there is something to be said about paying for information and training. Hands-on training and information regarding systems and processes are valuable so therefore it costs money as there was a significant amount investment regarding the time and money to develop it. Generally paid information is usually better than free content as it is more structured with step by step instructions but you still must conduct your own research to make a decision that benefits you the most. With that being said, if you’re just starting out then definitely research and absorb as much free content as possible with videos and podcasts. At some point, you will want to start making some small investments in books or low-cost training courses to move to an intermediate level. From there, you can then determine the type of advanced training and budget required to start taking significant actions towards your long-term goals. How has Brexit influenced the UK’s transparency regime and how, in turn, will openness will shape Brexit? There are three ways of looking at Brexit and open government: 1) possible changes to old policies and new ones being pushed, 2) the new Prime Minister either championing transparency or supporting secrecy, and 3) the openness of the Brexit process itself, which has so far struggled between the executive’s secretive prerogative powers and the legislature’s rights to know. May’s government will be seen as one that prized secrecy but conceded openness, an object (and abject) lesson in how hard it is to keep government closed in the 21st century. The May administration 2016–2017 is likely to be remembered as a secretive one, headed by a Prime Minister that wished to govern through confidentiality and closed networks. There were some high-profile openness policies, but they were inherited and slow. In this lecture, Ben Worthy will explain how Brexit shows how badly the approach misfired. The government’s plan of no ‘running commentary’ and secrecy was undermined by the Supreme Court, the UK Parliament and the EU Commission – who all forced greater transparency and greatly limited May’s room for manoeuvre and concealment. The three institutions – creating and using ‘institution friction’ to open up government – also exposed the government’s lack of preparation and undermined the UK’s credibility and leverage even before Brexit began. Speaker biography Ben Worthy is a lecturer in Politics at Birkbeck College, University of London. He has written extensively on issues around Transparency, Openness and Freedom of Information including co-authoring the book Does FOI Work? His latest book is ‘The Politics of Freedom of Information: How and Why Governments Pass Laws That Threaten Their Power’ (Manchester: MUP) and you can read an extract here.
