In an intimate conversation with Chioma Nnadi, Vogue's October Cover star Micheal B. Jordan dissected this unique moment where everything he's dreamed of seems to be finally coming to fruition. First up: his first Vogue cover photographed in a lush green garden in London by Luis Alberto Rodriguez.  “We felt like a garden was like the, you know, symbolic for the things that I was growing and things that I was building around and tending to,” Jordan said.  Brick by brick Jordan has added a bonafide Netflix hit animated movie, a highly anticipated new film and- the crowning jewel many actors dream of- an Oscar to his garden. After Jordan's Oscar win he received a call from fellow winner Jamie Foxx alongside his daughter (and a group of her friends!)  “He's always one of my biggest supporters and also encouraging me to stay locked in and stay on my path”  Up next on Jordan's path: a reimagination of the 1968 film The Thomas Crown Affair, set to come out March 2027. When Chioma asked what will make this film different from the original and most recent 1999 remake he said ”there's a whole generation that's not familiar with Thomas Crown, so I looked at this as a way to make this like a origin story and an introduction to who Thomas Crown is.” This will mark his sophomore directorial film and he carries the weight of responsibility for what it means to not just himself, but other Black filmmakers who aspire to be multifaceted. It will also be a reunion for him and Ruth E. Carter, who recently worked with Ryan Coogler and Jordan on costuming Sinners. Jordan says that for the Crown Affair, he wants the outfits to feel “timeless.” No stranger to the red carpet, Jordan likes being pushed out of his comfort zone, especially by longtime stylist James Bolden. He's a self described fashion “addict,” a trait that likely began in his teenage upbringing as a twelve year old actor from Newark, New Jersey.  He's come a long way from the Omavi jeans and 4X white tee that were staples of his youth, but the Timbs remain (as seen on his Vogue cover). Send us Fan MailThis week on Fabulous Film & Friends we still have a touch of spider mania after reviewing Brand New Day, so we're swinging full-time into what I consider the best Spider-Man films, we're talking 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and the 2014 sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, both directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, and Denis Leary, with Martin Sheen and Rhys Ifans rounding out the cast in the first movie with the addition of Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Paul Giamatti in the second. Before I begin, I have a bit of a super villain-ish monlogue to rant at y'all.As a lifelong Spidey fan, I hated the Raimi /Maguire films, while the rest of the world flocked to them and gushed, so I felt alone in preferring the second film.When I first saw ASM 2 in 2014 I argued it was the best representation of the character to date, then I bought the blue ray disc and noticed every awkward story beat and flaw on the rewatch, and quietly forgot about it… until I put it on again recently and was inspired all over again because of Garfield, Stone and Field's human and believable takes, as well as with that red-hot swinging web action. Turns out there's a vocal chunk of fans online feel the same way, so let's dig into both movies and figure out why this version still has such a fierce little cult.My guest today is the always dependable Professor Joe Fields, a reminder, Joe's not only a college teacher, author and deep thinker, he's the nephew of the owner of one of the flagship comic book shops in the San Francisco Bay area and country at large. There are rules now: IDs, consent, no recording devices and, most importantly, no singles strolling in alone. Which naturally launches a completely necessary discussion about whether two buddies could simply pretend to be a couple to get through the door. Journalism is alive and well.Things somehow become more respectable when we arrive in Tulsa, where authorities are searching for a mysterious serial defecator accused of targeting businesses while dressed in an ensemble involving tiny underwear, a shower cap, a modified mask and Crocs. The most damning detail? The Crocs apparently weren't in sport mode. That's how you know this guy fears neither God nor law enforcement.And then comes Oreogate.A kindergarten mom reportedly asks the other parents to stop packing Oreos because her daughter gets upset when other kids have them. No allergy. No medical issue. Just the brutal realization that another five-year-old has cookies and you do not. When the other parents refuse to reorganize their children's lunches around this international crisis, Mom considers switching schools.Over Oreos.Meanwhile, the kid starts trading for them anyway, proving once again that kindergarten cafeterias are basically tiny prisons with better wall art. The crew debates school-lunch currency, Double Stuf superiority, Golden Oreos, questionable specialty flavors and the economic insanity required to consider changing schools because Nabisco has destroyed the peace.There are even pickle-flavored Oreo-adjacent horrors entering the studio, because apparently talking about terrible cookies wasn't enough—we needed witnesses.It's celebrity talk, childhood trauma disguised as nostalgia, weird news, Burning Man logistics, criminal fashion analysis and one kindergarten snack dispute treated with roughly the seriousness of an international trade embargo.The crew dives into UFOs becoming UAPs, government disclosures, Bob Lazar, Area 51 and whether actual extraterrestrial visitors could finally unite humanity. Rafe thinks having one common alien enemy might finally turn us all into citizens of Earth. Moon isn't buying that optimism and figures we'd probably start fighting over which country gets custody of the aliens before they even get out of the ship. Sounds about right.Back on Earth, St. Louis is getting a little Hollywood treatment with The Streak, a sports comedy filming locally about Caltech's legendary basketball team snapping a 310-game losing streak. The production needs roughly 1,800 volunteer extras for basketball crowd scenes, meaning you too can spend five hours waiting around for your glorious half-second of blurry cinematic immortality. At least they're bringing stand-up comedians in to entertain the extras between takes.Then we enter conspiracy territory with Tropical Storm Dolly. Yes, shortly after Dolly Parton's passing, the next named Atlantic storm happens to be Dolly. No, they didn't name it after her. Yes, the names were already determined. And yes, people online are still turning it into a conspiracy because apparently coincidence was removed from the Internet's vocabulary sometime around 2017. It's the kind of discussion a comedy podcast was genetically engineered to handle.The show also remembers the incredible Tim Curry, looking back at everything from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Clue to Home Alone 2, Congo and his nightmare-fueling performance as Pennywise in the 1990 TV adaptation of It. Let's put on a show! It's season 8 for Paul and Corey Cross the Streams, and this season we're watching musicals. It's a singular art form with a dynamic history, and we get to listen to a lot of cast recordings... This week, Corey continued discussed of Motown, albeit in a legally-deniable way, with Dreamgirls (2006). The film was adapted and directed by Bill Condon from the 1981 Broadway show, which was originally directed by Michael Bennett, with music by Henry Krieger, and book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. The film was a box office smash and critical success, winning Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Sound Mixing. It's a star-studded cast, including Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson. And yet. Paul and Corey just did not like this adaptation. Corey, who worked bar at the original Broadway show and saw it hundreds of times, discusses the differences between the two versions and especially the power of seeing the show live. They also discuss why the film could have suffered from trying to satisfy its stars and expanding the story too much. And for as much as they don't agree with the common wisdom about Jennifer Hudson's performance, they were deeply impressed by Eddie Murphy and Beyonce's performances. They also discuss the musical's interrogation of respectability politics and art in the context of the early 1960s America, as well as misogynoir, colorism, and fatphobia.
