Join us for an inspiring journey as we sit down with Amal Easton, the visionary founder of Easton Training Centers. Amal shares his remarkable path from growing up in a happiness-focused, non-traditional family to creating a thriving Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu empire across Colorado. Discover how his decision to forgo a typical university path led him to acupuncture school, and ultimately to Brazil, where he trained with the Gracie family and honed his skills amidst language barriers and financial challenges. His return to the U.S. marked the beginning of Easton Training Centers, now a network of eight schools that have transformed lives and communities. In this engaging episode, we explore the powerful intersection of passion and personal growth through the lens of Jiu-Jitsu. Amal recounts his experience of moving to Brazil, selling everything to embrace a new life, and the profound impact Jiu-Jitsu had on his journey. This martial art is not just a practice but a metaphor for life and entrepreneurship, teaching resilience, connection, and mental agility. Zach Hanson: Turning Feral, Finding Faith – How Divorce, Wilderness, and Curiosity Forged a New Path to Purpose

    The Essential 11

What happens when you do everything society tells you—earn the degrees, land the secure job, build the perfect life—only to find yourself feeling empty? Why do so many men chase grit, competition, and accomplishments, yet still end up lost? And what if the real answer isn't in choosing between education or trade skills, city or wilderness, but in forging a life that blends both? Our guest today, Zach Hanson, has lived that journey. A former AI and machine-learning product management expert who helped build technology at the cutting edge, Zach walked away from the “safe” path to pursue something deeper. His story took him from competitive Jiu Jitsu and a tech career to the most remote town in Idaho, where he rebuilt his life after divorce through hunting, trapping, writing, and faith.Zach is not only an avid hunter, trapper, and trade advocate, but also a thought leader who bridges two worlds—the resilience of hands-on trades and the innovation of artificial intelligence. Today, he lives with his wife and three children at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains in rural Idaho, proving every day that success isn't about titles or paychecks, but about discipline, curiosity, and a God-centered life.In this conversation, Zach shares hard-won lessons on self-reliance, the dangers of over-education without real skills, and why rediscovering community, faith, and practical knowledge may be the antidote to the frustrations so many men face.Quotes:"The arc of the book is, what I found out is I actually found community there. I found God there. And it was all through my trying to run away and have these experiences which were great, but took me full circle to realize that I actually really need community.""If you have the desire, you will find a way. Now there is a component of grit to that, but it is desire full stop, and that has kind of changed my mindset very recently.""When people ask, that's what I you know, that's my identity. Now, it's not I'm some fancy worker, whatever like I'm talking about the things that bring me joy as an individual, and those things do."Key Takeaways:Expand your definition of education – Don't settle for “college or bust.” Ask yourself: What practical skills could I learn right now that would make me more self-reliant? Start with something simple like changing your own oil, learning basic welding, or even gardening.Audit your identity – How do you introduce yourself? Do you define yourself only by your job title, or by the passions and skills that truly bring you joy? Reframe your identity around what aligns with your values and long-term vision.Practice relentless curiosity – Treat everyday tasks as opportunities to learn. Instead of outsourcing everything, ask: Could I figure this out myself? Watch a tutorial, take a class, or shadow someone skilled.Prioritize communication and honesty in relationships – Daily devotionals, hard questions, and open dialogue can prevent small frustrations from eroding intimacy. What's one honest conversation you've been avoiding? Have it this week.Balance grit with desire – Discipline will get you far, but true growth comes when your actions align with what you deeply desire. Reflect: Am I grinding out of obligation, or pursuing something I truly want?Zach's story is a reminder that fulfillment doesn't come from following a prescribed path, but from daring to carve out your own. Whether it's through sharpening practical skills, deepening your faith, or embracing relentless curiosity, the challenge is the same: stop outsourcing your growth and start owning it. His journey—from artificial intelligence labs to the remote mountains of Idaho—proves that resilience and wisdom are forged not in comfort, but in the willingness to step into the unknown.

Aloha, core-lords! In this episode, Sterling Spencer and Cousin Ryan pitch a wild, actually-workable future for surfing: Surf Dojos + a Jiu-Jitsu-style belt system (white → blue → purple → brown → black, with degrees for airs, big waves, and riding any board). We roast soft-tops, salute the Herbie/Nathan/Christian Fletcher lineage and Astrodeck, debate WSL reform (END the endless qualifying grind, merge storylines, boost media), and ask the hard question: Is pickleball bigger than surfing—and why? We break down style vs. tricks, longboarding at size, and what makes true black belts like John John Florence, Joel Parkinson, Griffin Colapinto, Italo Ferreira, Nathan Florence, Kai Lenny (and yes, Kelly) different. Expect Mavericks walls, Snapper Rocks frontside/backside confusion, Pipeline/Tahiti/Jaws talk, Gen Z “training” on land, and classic Pinch My Clips chaos—plus the “Core-Lord vs. Soft-Top” cage match you didn't know you needed. This is surfing culture, comedy, and progression—skate brain meets ocean dojo, built for surf/skate/comedy podcast fans who still chase style, respect the lineup, and want real community. Yo, what's good, packaging people? Adam Peek here, and you know how we roll—we're diving deep into the real talk behind building a brand. On this episode, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Jack McNamara and Yash Banthia, the co-founders of Tru Energy Drinks. These guys aren't just making a great-tasting, better-for-you beverage; they're building a brand with a purpose, and their story is a masterclass in hustle and smart business decisions. From the Dungeon to DrinkTru.comJack and Yash's journey is the kind of scrappy startup story you love to hear. We're talking about a a literal dungeon—the basement of a Jiu-Jitsu gym—and a mindset of relentless improvement. We got into the nitty-gritty of their brand's evolution, from the early days of a crazy-expensive, custom-designed shot bottle that customers didn't even understand, to their current sleek, pre-printed cans. It's a prime example of why you can't be afraid to kill your darlings and embrace change, even if it means moving away from your original, most "creative" idea. The Power of Packaging EvolutionThis is where the real value bombs were dropped. We broke down:* The Cost of Creativity: Why a custom-molded bottle wasn't the right move for them early on, and how tooling costs can crush a new brand's cash flow.* The Sprint to Scale: The massive leap from a small, local co-packer to a national one, and the significant 35% savings they unlocked by switching from shrink sleeves to pre-printed cans. This is a crucial lesson in understanding your supply chain and the economies of scale.* Reading the Room (and the Shelf): How a simple redesign, like moving the brand name to the top and adding a clear flavor stripe, can make all the difference in a competitive retail environment. We talked about consumer behavior and why you've got two seconds to communicate what your product is.Products with a PurposeOne of the coolest things about Tru is their commitment to giving back. I had to call them out for not leading with their charitable contributions—they're just out there doing good because it's the right thing to do. We discussed their partnership with the Trevor Project and how building a brand with a strong mission, even when you're not yet profitable, can be a huge motivator for the team.Big shout-out to Jack and Yash for their time and their transparency. If you're out there building a CPG brand, trying to figure out your packaging, or just need a dose of entrepreneurial inspiration, this episode is for you.Check out Tru's full product line at drinktru.com and grab a can or a powder pack to fuel your next big idea. Don't forget to look for them at stores like Market Basket, Wegmans, and H-E-B.And hey, if you're ever in Salt Lake City, hit up Harmons and tell 'em Adam sent you! What happens when a troubled youth finds purpose? In this gripping conversation, Ivan Gonzalez takes us through his journey from the streets of East Gilroy to becoming the dedicated family man and martial artist he is today.Growing up in a financially struggling household with parents who eventually separated, Ivan found himself drawn to the streets by age 12. What began with breaking into cars escalated to drug dealing by 15, culminating in serious charges at 17 that threatened to send him to adult court with a potential 10-14 year sentence. After spending nearly a year in juvenile detention and accepting a plea deal that left him with substantial restitution, Ivan reached a crossroads. The birth of his daughter while transitioning out of the system became the catalyst for profound change. "I finally had positives," Ivan reflects. "Why ruin them?" This simple question marked the beginning of his transformation. Years later, at 25, Ivan discovered martial arts—a discipline that would further reshape his perspective and provide the structure he never had growing up.Today, as a blue belt in jiu-jitsu and father of 2 , Ivan's priorities have completely shifted. His powerful testimony about wanting his children to have opportunities he never had reveals how completely his values have transformed. His story isn't just about personal redemption but highlights how crucial positive support systems are for youth—something he lacked in his early years but now works tirelessly to provide for his own family.Whether you're facing your own struggles or simply need a reminder of the human capacity for change, Ivan's journey offers both hope and practical wisdom about the power of finding your "why" in life.Support the show https://linktr.ee/Thehassleofhair

In this episode we follow the unfolding legal drama around high-profile killings and the way judges, juries, and social platforms nudge outcomes inch-by-inch. Using recent court rulings — from dropped terrorism enhancements to downgraded charges — we explain the legal mechanics that can turn a first-degree case into a lesser offense, and why that process feels like a calculated, deliberate unspooling to many observers. We also examine the cultural side: the tidal wave of social-media reaction on Blue Sky, the celebrity narratives that recast accused killers as romantic figures, and how that flood of online fandom shapes public perception and the courtroom theatre. Expect clear, forensic breakdowns of charges (terrorism vs. first-degree vs. second-degree), a primer on jury nullification and plea dynamics, and a look at the political and emotional storytelling that surrounds these cases.

Mindset Matters. In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, we are honored to host a remarkable individual who has not only mastered the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but has also conquered the world's highest peak – Mount Everest. Join us as Marcus and Melanie delve into the incredible journey of Cesalina Gracie. Hailing from a family that pioneered and revolutionized this martial art, Cesalina has carried the torch forward, dedicating her life to mastering the intricacies of Jiu-Jitsu. Cesalina shares insights into the mental and physical preparation required for both the Jiu-Jitsu arena and the formidable slopes of Everest. How do the principles of discipline, resilience, and focus intertwine between the mats and the mountains? Listen in and be inspired by this incredible woman of purpose and power. Whether you're a Jiu-Jitsu enthusiast, an aspiring mountaineer, or someone navigating life's challenges, Cesalina's journey offers invaluable insights that transcend boundaries. In this episode you will hear: • Back in the day, there were eighteen martial arts, different clans that had different practices in Japan, and they all ended with “Jitsu.” (7:08) • There are no bad kids. There's bad environments for kids. (10:41) • [Jiu Jitsu] is an equalizer of emotions for kids. Jiu Jitsu is gonna honor your personality. (11:04) • Nobody needs to tell us where you're gonna find the environment, because when you walk in, the systems that are in place teach you before you hear a word from your coach. (12:54) • [My grandfather] saw immediately what the power of that art was and the incredible responsibility that came with it. (13:45) • This [Jiu Jitsu] is a tool for self-development. I'm not here to learn how to fight. I'm here to feel powerful and feel capable without having to look powerful and look capable. (14:00) • That's the beautiful thing about Jiu Jitsu, is that it lives on the inside. (14:21) • [My family] proved the efficiency of Jiu Jitsu to the rest of the world. (20:43) • If the whole world learns these tools, we're gonna live in a society that is more peaceful, that is more respectful, because when you have human beings that are self-confident and compassionate, you start changing the way we interact with each other, and we start changing the way we live our lives. (21:19) • As a grown up, I understand the difference between winners and champions. (30:06) • The most important thing about Jiu Jitsu that it builds and internal constitution that is so strong that you can deal with anything in life. (38:26) • The greatest value of Jiu Jitsu is applied outside of the mat. (42:29) • Ultimately, the greatest skill you can have is awareness. (45:54) • We have to be brutally honest with ourselves as to where we're standing in life. (55:51) • What's actually gonna take you to the top are the mindsets that you've created in your journey in Jiu Jitsu. (61:20) • [While climbing Mount Everest] the one question that I did not ask myself was “should I go back to Everest Base Camp?” (63:35) • Another part that was really hard [while climbing Mount Everest] was when I saw dead bodies in the mountain for the first time. (63:47) • I hope everyone gets to experience something in their lives that they have a hard time describing. (72:22) • When I got back to base camp, I immediately called my family, because I didn't tell anybody I was climbing Mount Everest. (82:21) • Champions are still champions even when they lose. (87:27) • When you have confidence in yourself, you solve so many problems.
