 This week on Fabulous Film and Friends  I'm both chasing butterflies and swatting at hornets whilst forcing my friends to watch and analyze the films of director S. Craig Zahler a filmmaker who couldn't have a more awkward professional name than if he had gone with "E. Marvin Bummington." But are his films worth discussing? We're talking 2015's Bone Tomahawk starring the mighty Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, David Arquette, Lili Simmons, Fred Melamed, Kathryn Morris, Geno Segers and in a pair of blink and you'll miss ‘em cameos: Sean Young and Michael Paré then 2017's Brawl in Cell Block 99 starring Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Udo Kier, Marc Blucas, Geno Segers, Dion Mucciato and Don Johnson and finally Dragged Across Concrete which came out somewhere in 2019 and stars Mel Gibson, Tory Kettles, Michael Jai White, Thomas Kretschmann and “the S. Craig Zahler traveling players” who include Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Fred Melamed, Udo Kier and Don Johnson. My guests today are my go-to series regulars who are the only pair I know who have the slightest interest in joining me in this flight of fancy, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we wander outside of town onto the deadly trail: the synopses: In Bone Tomahawk, a murderous outlaw unwittingly leads a band of cannibalistic savages into a peaceful western town where the brutes kidnap the jailed outlaw, a deputy and the town's doctor who is also the wife of Arthur, a local rancher. Despite an injured leg, Arthur joins a rescue party with Sheriff Hunt, Hunt's old deputy Chicory, and a mysterious dandy cum gunslinger named Brooder. With Arthur's injury slowing them down, the four brave men follow the savage's path to hellish territory where they come face-to-face with unimaginable horrors that test both the team's courage and sanity. Brawl in Cell Block 99  tells the tale of Bradley Thomas who, in one day , is fired from his job and learns his wife is having an affair. He decides the only way to salvage his marriage is to go full time into drug smuggling to make the real money. A year later all is well: Bradley has a big house and his wife is pregnant but he goes in on a shady deal with some sleazy cartel types and it all goes south, forcing Bradley to choose between killing cops and killing cartel members. He chooses the latter but still ends up with in a five year prison sentence in a minimum security prison. Seems it is what it is until a messenger from the cartel comes to visit Bradley on his second day in the cooler and tells him that if he doesn't get transferred to the maximum-security prison in order to kill a high value target in Cell Block 99 that his wife and unborn child will be murdered. Bradley dutifully and mercilessly follows their orders to save his family  until he realizes all may not be what it seems.  In Dragged Across Concrete, unorthodox and vaguely shady take-no-prisoners cops, Brett Ridgeman and Anthony Lurasetti, are suspended for use of excessive force and use their unpaid leave to plan a heist. Unfortunately, their plot leads to witnessing a deadly bank robbery committed by a vicious and amoral trio of crooks led by Lorentz Vogelmann, who hired street thugs Henry Johns and Biscuit to be part of their team. With a dire hostage situation on their hands and after witnessing several murders, Henry and Biscuit begin to suspect that their hours are numbered as part of Vogelmann's crew. At the same time, Ridgeman and Lurassetti are the only ones who have tailed the gang to their getaway hideout and are the only pair who can make a difference. The two forces meet up in the proverbial abandoned warehouse and chaos ensues. How do the films stack up?

We are deep into Mangia March and this week we have a smoking new episode. We are covering Season for Love. It stars Autumn Reeser as Tyler, a single mom trying to find a new path after her life in the big city fizzled out. She returns home where she runs into Corey, played by Marc Blucas, a successful BBQ entrepreneur who's trying to rekindle his passion for cooking. In this episode we invent a re-Flesh-ment table (could be good, could be bad, could be hot, we're not sure), talk about the uber sensitive kiss tractor beam TM that always gets shut off at inopportune moments and ponder the possibility of an erotic BBQ cookbook (sounds messy and we're not mad at it). Former Wake Forest Basketball Standout, Marc Blucas talks about becoming a Hollywood Actor.

Adrienne Barbeau began her career in 1963 with the San Jose Civic Light Opera. After graduating high school, she traveled with a musical comedy revue, entertaining our servicemen on Army bases throughout Southeast Asia. In 1965, she moved to New York where she made her Broadway debut as Tevye's second daughter, Hodel, in Fiddler on the Roof. A Tony nomination and a Theatre World Award for her creation of Rizzo in the original Broadway production of Grease led her back to California and the role of Bea Arthur's daughter, Carol, in the hit series Maude.  Since then she has become a best selling author, a recording artist, and the star of numerous features, films for television, concert performances, musicals and plays. Movie fans know her best for her performances in The Fog, Escape From New York, Creepshow, Swamp Thing, Back to School, and Cannonball Run. She appeared in the Academy Award winning ARGO.  Recently released are the golf comedy The Eagle and the Albatross with Dan Lauria and K-Pop star Amber Liu, and the ecological horror film Unearth, starring Marc Blucas. Adrienne has a Golden Globe nomination and over 450 screen performances to her credit. She starred as Ruthie, the Snake Dancer, on HBO's fascinating series, Carnivale. She was Oswald's mom on Drew Carey, Victoria Grayson's mom on Revenge, and Venus's mom on Sons of Anarchy. Daytime viewers know her as Suzanne Stanwyck on General Hospital. Her recent television appearances include Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy, the Netflix  series A.J. and the Queen, starring RuPaul, and American Horror Story. Having starred in over 25 theatrical productions in the U.S. and Canada, Adrienne spent most of 2015 playing Berthe, Pippin's grandmother, in the National Tour of Pippin, singing “No Time At All” as she hung upside down from a trapeze. Off camera, Adrienne is the voice of Catwoman in Batman, The Animated Series, Ms. Simone in Scooby-Do on Zombie Island, and Scooter's Mom in the 3-D animated film Fly Me To The Moon. She can be heard in a myriad of video games: God of War, Halo 4, and Fallout 76 among them. She also provides video description for the visually impaired on many films, documentaries, and television series; it's one of her favorite forms of voiceover work. Adrienne is the author of four books: the best-selling memoir There Are Worse Things I Could Do; the urban fantasy Vampyres of Hollywood and its comedy romance sequels, Love Bites and Make Me Dead. Liz and Sacha enact pages from a binder found at a thrift store full of some girl's *NSYNC fan fiction that focuses on band member Joey Fatone and the love of his life, a narrator named Kelly.   After years of reading from this god damn binder, in this episode we get to the last page! And it's a who's who of, well, something. Kelly's study partner is Marc Blucas (who played Riley Finn on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a truly random choice, we agree). He invites her to watch him play basketball with Dean Cain, Topher Grace, Shane West, Barry Pepper and Casey Affleck. What an invitation! To sit in the stands and watch 90s celebrities play ball! We know you are jealous that this is not a true story featuring you. Kelly and Joey argue over the phone about Kelly's friendship with Marc while he's out of town. In the meantime Marc thanks Kelly for helping him with business class, by arranging a performance of Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls for her benefit in a large mansion. Then more shit hits more fans in true cliffhanger fashion, just in time for the story to conclude in true in medias res.   Also: random alliteration, ridiculous accompaniment, The Jersey Devil, menacing messages, notes in the margins…and more.   All this, while Sacha accompanies us on his piano.   What will become of this podcast now? Unearth is a "fracking horror film" that was produced over the course of 8 years. What began as a successful crowdfunding campaign for a teaser, ultimately helped secure financing of nearly $1,000,000 for the full feature film. From there, the project attracted some known cast (Adrienne Barbeau and Marc Blucas), and landed distribution after premiering at the Fantasia film festival. It became the first feature film to sell out a theatrical show the Laemmle theaters in LA (post-pandemic), and is now widely available on DVD, VOD and other platforms.
