The Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pods System (TARPS) was a significant advancement in reconnaissance technology, particularly for the U.S. Navy during the late 20th century. TARPS, developed and deployed during the Gulf War (1990-1991), was a crucial system designed to enhance real-time intelligence-gathering capabilities for naval aviation, especially for carrier-based aircraft. The system was integrated into F-14 Tomcat fighter jets, allowing them to conduct high-resolution imagery and reconnaissance missions. TARPS utilized a sophisticated suite of sensors, including high-definition cameras and infrared systems, to capture imagery and data over enemy territory. This made it a valuable asset for targeting and surveillance, providing crucial intelligence during the conflict. One of the individuals behind the deployment of TARPS was Chris Bacon, a Navy veteran who played a role in the system's operational success. In August 1998, at 17 years old, Chris Bacon joined the Navy and started basic training in Orlando, Florida. After graduation, he went to Photo School in Pensacola, Florida. Upon graduating, he received orders to report to the VF-103, F-14 Fighter Squadron. VF-103 was part of Carrier Air Wing 17, based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Shortly after, he deployed for workups in preparation for a six-month deployment. As scheduled, the airwing deployed on August 7 aboard the USS Saratoga and made a rapid crossing of the Mediterranean as Iraq invaded Kuwait. Ten days after deploying, the US began Operation Desert Shield. On the evening of January 28, the USS Saratoga received orders to initiate Desert Storm. After seven months and 21 days of deployment, with 11,700 arrested landings, 12,700 sorties flown, and 36,382 miles traveled, the USS Saratoga returned to its home port on March 28 with fewer sailors. The success of TARPS marked a significant milestone in the evolution of naval reconnaissance capabilities, enabling Navy pilots to gather detailed intelligence in real time while remaining out of the enemy's direct line of fire. During the Gulf War, the U.S. Navy utilized TARPS extensively for various missions, including target identification, battle damage assessment, and strategic reconnaissance over Iraq and Kuwait. The system's ability to gather high-quality imagery and intelligence played a vital role in guiding airstrikes and shaping military strategy. The data collected by TARPS provided commanders with timely and actionable intelligence, which greatly enhanced the effectiveness of allied forces during the conflict. TARPS became a benchmark for future reconnaissance technologies, demonstrating the importance of integrating advanced sensors into military aircraft to improve operational effectiveness. It also highlighted the growing importance of real-time intelligence in modern warfare, a trend that would continue to evolve in subsequent conflicts and military technologies. In addition to its use in the Gulf War, TARPS continued to serve as a vital tool in the U.S. Navy's arsenal for many years after the conflict. It contributed to numerous intelligence-gathering operations and was a crucial component of naval reconnaissance efforts in the post-Cold War era. TARPS' legacy paved the way for future advancements in aerial reconnaissance systems and underscored the importance of technological innovation in military operations. Overall, the development and deployment of TARPS represented a major leap forward in naval aviation technology. Thanks to the efforts of individuals like Chris Bacon and the broader U.S. Navy team, TARPS played a critical role in the Gulf War, providing essential reconnaissance data that helped shape the outcome of the conflict. Its impact on military reconnaissance continues to be felt today as modern systems build on the foundation laid by TARPS. January 1, 1994, marked Chris's final six-month deployment, which coincided perfectly with Operation Deny Flight and Operation Provide Promise, which enforced the UN's no-fly zone and provided air support over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Upon his return, the USS Saratoga docked in Jacksonville, Florida, and was decommissioned. Her last day at sea was his last day in the Navy. UFOs have traditionally been more of a pop culture phenomenon than an actual science. But with the recent declassification of Navy gun camera footage that shows unexplained craft seeming to defy the laws of flight and physics, there's a growing movement among the aviation, military and science communities. They insist it's vital to destigmatize the conversation around Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAPs, which is the preferred nomenclature for the inexplicable occurrences. Because the craft seem to do things that are impossible for our current level of aeronautical technology, and have interfered with the operation of other aircraft in-flight. And if they aren't American, they pose a national security threat regardless of whether they're from China, Russia or... somewhere else. So in this episode, we talk to former Navy Lt. Ryan Graves, the founder of Americans for Safe Aerospace and a former Navy F-18 pilot who has experienced encounters with UAP. He was also one of three experts called to testify at a Congressional hearing in July. He'll share the things he saw that convinced him that UAP are a serious issue, what made him decide to come forward as the first military pilot to go public with his concerns, and why so many pilots experience UAP but choose not to report it. Then, we'll discuss how his organization is leading a campaign to destigmatize the conversation, promote UAP reporting, and bring transparency to the issue. It is Fleet Week in San Francisco. Are you coming to the city to see the Blue Angels and the ships? What is Fleet Week? San Francisco Fleet Week is one of the country's largest celebrations of the U.S. armed forces. The celebration was started in 1981 by then San Francisco Mayor, Diane Feinstein. Organizers say following the pandemic huge crowds turned out for Fleet Week last year, and they're predicting big crowds again this year. Where is it? Most official Fleet Week activities take place along The Embarcadero and Marina Greens. If you're looking for the best seating for the airshow, the Marina Green is the place to be. The Presidio Tunnel Tops, Twin Peaks, Pier 39 and Crissy Field will also provide great views. Watching the Air Show is free, but premium seating is available for purchase. City leaders are advising visitors, as they have in years past, to use public transit and say if you must drive, be sure to not leave any valuables in your vehicle, in fact they're warning people who drive to clear any valuables out of their car even before they park, just in case burglars are watching. What's new in 2022? Organizers say for the first time ever Navy F-35's will be at San Francisco's Fleet Week. Two of the F-35's will be on display for visitors to enjoy. Whiz speaks with Mark 'Slider' Keller, former Navy F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Hornet Naval Flight Officer with extensive combat experience in multiple theatres of operations. Slider had a weapons delivery that went wrong (after doing everything 'right') that resulted in the deaths of approximately 12 innocent civilians. The resulting trauma stuck with him and as he transitioned to civilian life things began to spiral downward - alcohol, drugs, relationships, addiction, suicidal thoughts - anything to numb the pain. Slider was nearing the end until his best friend and Navy buddy told him about the life saving/changing journey Whiz experienced. In part 1 Slider takes us from the tip of the spear to rock bottom.
All good things come to an end, and so it was with the Tomcat's US Navy service. The end came in 2006, when the final Navy F-14 squadron -- VF-31 Tomcatters – shut down their F-14Ds for the last time. There's a lot more to the story than the Tomcat Sunset ceremony at NAS Oceana and a final flight, such as the final deployment and behind-the-scenes activities that will surprise you.Our guest is uniquely qualified for this topic, as he was the last commanding officer of VF-31: James “Puck” Howe. (Yes, the squadron continued, but it became VFA-31.) His accounts of the squadron's performance and the aircraft's final months will make you proud to be a Tomcat fan!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/f-14_tomcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

When introduced, the F-14 Tomcat set new standards for maneuverability and controllability, making it a great dogfighter. In this episode, a renowned F-14 pilot describes those capabilities and goes further, providing valuable insights on topics from flying skills to Navy training programs.Retired U.S. Navy Captain Sam “Slammer” Richardson takes us from his early days in pilot training to his time as the CO of the F-14 training squadron (aka RAG), where he flew A-model Tomcats and won dogfights against student pilots in F-14Ds to teach them how to be better pilots. A former TOPGUN instructor, Slammer shares his thoughts on learning that “trick maneuver,” how to become a good Tomcat pilot, and talks about launching the program that changed Navy F-14 training. He also debriefs his famous engagement where he gunned a MiG-29 (in training). With more than 2,700 F-14 flight hours, Slammer says, “The Tomcat was an easy airplane to fly, but hard to fly well.” The hosts enjoyed this one and you will, too!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/f-14_tomcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Her first book, “Fearless Leadership”, was a Wall Street Journal Best Seller – and explored the characteristics of true leaders—courage, tenacity, and integrity. And her latest book, “Span of Control”, picks up where Fearless Leadership left off – encouraging and guiding readers to develop resilience for facing hard times – offering a clear path out of the chaos when we are seemingly overwhelmed. Carey is a selfless individual, the very definition of a servant leader, and I am very pleased to consider her a personal friend of mine. On this episode of the UFO podcast UNKNOWN, Jason McClellan looks at three recently released UFO photos that were taken by the Weapons System Officer in a Navy F-18 fighter jet on April 6, 2019.
Mike SavickiIn November 1990., while training to become a U.S. Navy F-14 fighter pilot, Mike Savicki sustained a severe spinal cord injury after diving into the ocean. In an instant, he went from being a fit, active, promising Naval officer – commissioned as the top-flight candidate in the nation’s number one ROTC college graduating class – to a quadriplegic who was challenged with learning to live life again using a wheelchair. As he regained his independence, Mike earned an MBA, delivered the commencement address, and became involved in wheelchair sports. He is a 22-time finisher (and five-time division winner) of the prestigious BAA Boston Marathon (making him the only person to have completed the marathon on foot and subsequently in a wheelchair) and has earned more than 100 gold medals in the National Wheelchair Veterans Games. In 2009, he became the first quadriplegic to finish the 70.3-mile Beach to Battleship Half Ironman Triathlon. From there he became deputy director of World T.E.A.M. Sports, a non-profit for people with and without disabilities, served on numerous non-profit boards, and started his own communications company. He is also a high school teacher, a husband, a father, an advocate for disabled veterans, and a proponent of getting those with disabilities back on the road in adapted vehicles.Savicki married in 2010, and he and his wife, Sarah, welcomed a baby girl, Caroline, into their lives shortly thereafter. Overcoming adversity, marathons, triathlons, degrees, companies, teams, books, magazines, speeches, advocacy efforts in DC, and fighter jets? That's nothing, he says. The real challenge? Keeping up with a kiddo whose life is unfolding each and every day.Resources:Check out Mike’s websiteFollow Mike on FacebookFollow Mike on Instagram
This former U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot has a lot to share with us about bold, fearless leadership, and some of her advice may be surprising to you. Carey Lohrenz was a pioneer in military aviation as the first female to pilot that powerful jetfighter. So add that factor onto the stress of a job where inconsistent execution or team miscommunication could lead to catastrophe. (As in… your team being KILLED and it's your fault. Kind of a different game here, right?) I would say this woman is uniquely and unequivocally qualified in team leadership and high-performance under pressure! We sit down with Navy F-5 driver, photographer, and all-around good guy, Brad "Stuffer" Holeski to discuss his time in the Navy, flying the Mig-28 (F-5), and also some wonderful photography. This episode is sponsored by the iOS game, Carrier Landing HD.
My guest today is former US Naval Fighter Pilot, Charlie Plumb. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he completed flight training and reported to Miramar Air Station in San Diego where he flew the first adversarial flights in the development of “TOP GUN.” He then deployed to Vietnam and flew 74 successful combat missions and made over 100 carrier landings. On his 75th mission, just five days before the end of his tour, he was shot down over Hanoi, taken prisoner, tortured, and spent the next 2,103 days in an 8-by-8 foot cell as a Prisoner Of War. Following his repatriation, he continued his flying career, retiring from the Navy after 28 years of service. In our conversation, we talk about what it was like flying the top jet of the era, the missions he flew over Vietnam, and how he kept hope throughout his nearly 6 years as a POW. Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
From John Ramstead's webpage: John started out his career as a Navy F-14 pilot and flew combat during Desert Storm. Following his Navy career, he became a successful startup entrepreneur and then joined the management team of a Fortune 100 company. Four years ago he had a near fatal accident that put him under hospital care for two years and required 23 surgeries. This taught him what is truly important and how to move from success to significance. Today he is the founder of Beyond Influence, LLC, a global leadership coaching and consulting firm. Their mission is to equip and empower leaders to achieve what has been inspired in them. He now devotes his time to leadership coaching, consulting, and speaking.
How much time do you have to review your financial activity each day? Or rather, how much time do you want to spend doing that? The answer is likely to be minimal. What if you could have some simple steps to evaluate your financial basis; and it didn't require a PhD in investing? I took some initial flying lessons once. The pilot was a former Navy F-14 pilot and we were in a Cessna 172. He made it seem so simple. He did a pre-flight check; and I watched. At first he managed all of the communication with the tower. When we were on the ground he spoke with the tower, when we were in the air he spoke with the tower. He had me focus initially on the mechanics of take off, landing, and making turns in the air without slippage. Making adjustments in our financial picture often requires a similar level of involvement. You need someone to manage the pre-flight, and to communicate with the tower. Eventually you will need to take care of all those matters. Important in this is the need to also understand related markets. For example, if you were investing in the SPY, an S&P 500 ETF, you will also want to understand how related markets are performing. What is a related market to SPY? You will also want to understand the current market context of economic reports. In other words, create a pre-flight checklist and go through it on a regular basis. One time while I was flying with a friend in his Piper we flew right over Lake Tahoe, in California. As soon as we got over the water the air got really bumpy because of the change in air temperature caused by the water. I was glad to get past the lake for sure. Even though you do a pre-flight check, there are times when your investment gets bumpy. Be sure your rules include how and when to leave the investment. Most of all, be sure to have a flight instructor to help you with a range of activities to help protect your hard-earned capital. Thanks for joining, and until next time
In December, the Defense Department declassified two videos documenting encounters between U.S. Navy F-18 fighters and unidentified aircraft. The first video captures multiple pilots observing and discussing a strange, hovering, egg-shaped craft, apparently one of a “fleet” of such objects, according to cockpit audio. The second shows a similar incident involving an F-18 attached to the USS Nimitz carrier battle group in 2004. The videos, along with observations by pilots and radar operators, appear to provide evidence of the existence of aircraft far superior to anything possessed by the United States or its allies. Defense Department officials who analyze the relevant intelligence confirm more than a dozen such incidents off the East Coast alone since 2015. In another recent case, the Air Force launched F-15 fighters last October in a failed attempt to intercept an unidentified high-speed aircraft looping over the Pacific Northwest .A third declassified video, released by To the Stars Academy of Arts and Science , a privately owned media and scientific research company to which I’m an adviser, reveals a previously undisclosed Navy encounter that occurred off the East Coast in 2015.

Things start ramping up here on Just One of the Guys as we edge closer and closer to the end of Volume Three of Green Lantern. In issue 178, we get Kyle having to face down one of his greatest adversaries...no, not Grayven...or Purgatory...DEFINITELY not Ohm, but Fatality, the last survivor of the doomed planet Xanshi and fabled killer of Green Lanterns, FATALITY! And armed with some psychotropic darts that totally mess with Kyle's perception, it looks like the murderous maiden might actually accomplish her mission of taking Kyle out (although you can probably imagine that doesn't happen as it would be awkward to have three issues of Fatality gloating over Kyle's death). Plus we have a surprise reveal of who the Big Bad behind all of Kyle's recent woes is...and susprisingly enough, it's not Ben Raab (I could have sworn that's who it would have been). So unless you want a Navy F-16 tossed at your head, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening!Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks!
