"My son is not a freak!" No, there was nothing subtle about the 1976 John Travolta made-for-TV movie, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, yet we remember it fondly. Sun-dappled horses, loving parents, and a kindhearted kid in a plastic tube certainly ring the bells of nostalgia, but how well do we really remember it? Is Gina just a girl next door or a cold-blooded, money hungry bully? Is the family doctor a savior or ... something else? And why does this "boy" look 35? The Old Roommates rub on the antibacterial gel and discuss this Emmy-winning rollercoaster all through their middle-aged lens. He told Frasier that he should talk to Lilith and find out why she did what she did. (Frasier S2E21 An Affair to Forget)3. This was the only time Frasier visited with Niles between 1991 and 1993 (Since Frasier saw Niles only once in two years in Frasier S3E24 You Can Go Home Again)4. Of course, all of this happened right before Frasiers' high school reunion. (Frasier S6E2 Frasier's Curse)5. He spent Thanksgiving with his son at Cheers, surrounded by friendly faces. Frasier later received divorce papers, and he knew their love story was finally over. His friend Rebecca Howe - once the object of his affections - threw him a Divorce Party. It was a kind gesture, and when the other guests left Rebecca and Frasier - very surprisingly - ended up kissing…and more? (Cheers S11E16 Is There a Doctor in the Howe?)9. One of those little creatures would later be adopted by Marty and named Eddie (Frasier S3E24 You Can Go Home Again) (NOTE: This makes Eddie around 2 years old in S1 of Frasier))7. On this November day in particular, he had lunch with his partner Frank and somehow ended up with a goldfish. He named it Eddie. Frank, Marty and fish Eddie ended up driving around Seattle while Marty unloaded his familial woes on his partner. Frasier was once again staying in Boston for Thanksgiving. This bothered Marty more than he let on, but Frank knew. They stopped at a convenience store like they had many times before. Marty didn't get anything, but Frank picked up a slushie.  Before they left, Frank decided to go back inside: the frozen concoction wasn't to his liking.  (Frasier S9E4 The Return of Martin Crane) This decision brought him face to face with a man named Hicks who was holding up the store with a .38 special. (Frasier S8E23 A Day in May) Frank got lucky: Marty Crane intervened. He stopped the robbery and saved Frank, but for this good deed, Marty took a bullet to the hip. 5...4...3...2...fun!!

i went to an estate sale last weekend and i bought two jars of rubber bands. one had red rubber bands. the other had green rubber bands. they were so neatly organized. so pleasing to look at. someone, and presumely this person is now dead, took the care to organize these jars of rubber bands and i knew immediately that i had to have them. it was sunday and in the last hour of the estate sale. everything was cheap and whatever was left over was probably destined for the landfill. is it my job to save all the treasurers of the recently deceased? no. but maybe. and i’ve saved other objects before. notebooks. homemade fridge magnets. odd collections of useless items. at least, the items are useless to me, but they were meaningful to someone. and that’s what draws me to them. i hope that some day someone decides that my trash is worth preserving. and in that trash, i will live forever.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Surface to Air Missive “Monster’s Mouth” Shelly’s Gone02:34 Erika Bell “Whales” Precept07:10 GOMME “Floss” Absent Healing10:31 J.F. Boy In The Bubble? Gene Therapy Might Help SCID; And Reducing Risk And Cost Of Open Bedside Tracheostomies

Welcome to this episode of Physician's Weekly podcast. I am your host, Dr. Rachel Giles, from Medicom Medical Publishers in collaboration with Physicians Weekly. Today we have 2 very interesting and timely interviews to share with you. Later in this podcast, Physician's Weekly's Senior Editor Julia Ernst interviews Dr. Karla O'Dell, from the University of Southern California, about tracheostomy procedures, in particular how you can do open bedside tracheostomies at a low cost without extra risks in safety outcomes. This is of course particularly relevant for this COVID-19 pandemic, and she also reflects on what she thinks those long-term implications will be.But first, we speak with Professor Frank Staal, from the Dept of Immunology at the Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands, who was in the news this week because he co-led a team who treated the first baby with severe congenital immune deficiency (SCID) with gene therapy in the Netherlands, and the first time gene therapy has been used to treat this particular form of SCID worldwide. Have you ever heard of the 1976 movie “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble”? That was based on the story of David Vetter, who was born with SCID and lived in a plastic sterile bubble because he had essentially no immune system. New gene therapy techniques are offering alternatives to bone marrow transplants. The treatment in the news this week was effective and the baby is well with a competent immune system. Enjoy listening!Further readingTang L, West J, Lee E, Kharidia K, Hasday S, Chambers T, Kokot N, Swanson M, O'Dell K. The tone is shifted drastically as the makers of Austin Powers: the spy who shagged me, had a hand in making this cult classic. With a cameo of mini me himself Vern Troyer. It's a fun and hilarious adventure for Jimmy who was born without immunities and has to live his life inside of a bubble, but that life gets old eventually. He must stop the love of his life from marrying a horrible guy for her. Welcome to episode two of Travolta/Cage! This week, film and TV critic extraordinaire Noel Murray (AV Club, The Dissolve) joins us to discuss the next two films in Travolta and Cage’s oeuvre. First up is 1976’s The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, a surprisingly effective TV weepie-of-the-week starring Travolta as Tod Lubitch, a boy with no immune system who has to live his life in — you guessed it — a plastic bubble. Will he find love with the relatable girl-next-door (Glynnis O’Connor)? Will he escape his life of isolation? And most importantly, will he finally get to jerk off in private? Then, of course, there’s Rumble Fish, Francis Ford Coppola’s avant-garde followup to The Outsiders, a film that behaves like Ponyboy’s pretentious French cousin. While the bulk of the story follows teenage ruffian Ricky-James (Matt Dillon) flirting with teenage delinquency to impress his mysterious older brother Motorcycle Boy (sorry, The Motorcycle Boy) (Mickey Rourke), Nic Cage shows up in his uncles’ movie as the surprisingly perceptive gang member Smokey. It’s moody and beautifully filmed and sports a killer Stewart Copeland score, but can it keep all that atmosphere up for two hours? In the 1976 made-for-television movie, “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble,” a then-unknown John Travolta introduced Americans to a condition technically called “X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency.” Or, as people have called it since the movie, “bubble boy disease.” Children with “bubble boy disease” can't fight off infections that the rest of us can, because their immune system doesn't work properly. Like Travolta's character, many who suffer from the condition live in sealed, sterile enclosures that protect them from being exposed to the infections that could kill them. In the movie, Travolta's character somehow develops enough immunity to risk leaving the plastic bubble in search of true love, but many of his real-world counterparts aren't so fortunate. At least they weren't. A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine announced that doctors might have found a cure for “bubble boy disease.” Doctors at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis used an “inactivated form of HIV to introduce genetic changes into the patient's bone marrow cells. These changes fix the bone marrow so it starts doing its job, pumping out all three types of immune cells.” Seven infants with the condition, which is caused by a genetic defect, were treated between 2016 and 2018. Six of them were able to leave the hospital within four weeks and the seventh is apparently on the way to joining them. For parents of the estimated thirty to forty children born with the condition every year, what happened in Memphis is nothing less than miraculous. Children who were virtually certain to die, sometimes by the age of two, now have a chance at life. The same week the results at St. Jude's were announced, we learned that Israeli scientists had succeeded in manufacturing a 3D printed heart made from human cells. While it doesn't beat and is the size of a rabbit's heart, it's a potential first step in what was previously the stuff of science fiction: printing human organs for use in transplants. Every day, 22 people in the U.S. alone die while awaiting an organ transplant. Being able to manufacture them from human cells instead of just waiting for other people to die would save thousands, if not more, lives. In addition to giving hope to people suffering from life-threatening illnesses, these stories offer a chance for us to discuss the right and wrong uses of biotechnology. Several times over the last few years, I've talked on BreakPoint about the pitfalls of technologies like CRISPR, the gene-editing technology used by a Chinese scientist to genetically-modify two embryos last year. I called the criticism of this scientist “faux outrage,” not because I approved of what he did, but because his critics, including those who invented CRISPR, knew this would happen and still did nothing to prevent it. So how do we know which of advances in biotechnology is moral, and which is not? Where can we begin to draw a moral line? Here's a suggestion: We have to distinguish between healing and enhancing. What happened in Memphis is definitely healing. The goal was to keep these infants from dying. Similarly, attempts to manufacture organs for transplant seems rooted in a desire to heal, though one could easily imagine a scenario in the near future in which printed parts out-perform those we're born with. What then? Should we allow humans to upgrade? The use of human creativity and ingenuity to heal keeps with our status as co-creators with God. Obviously, the difference between our creative powers and God's is literally infinite. But, part of being created in God's image is the ability to use our creativity to care for creation including ourselves. In contrast, using biotechnology to enhance humans, or even to create super humans, is an attempt to usurp God-as-creator. We seek to create ourselves in our own image instead of conforming to God's intentions for us. So far, what happened in Memphis and Israel didn't cross that line between healing and enhancement. But as fast as technology advances these days, we can never stop asking the question.

This (in)famous 1970s TV movie featured a young John Travolta as Tod, a teenager with immune deficiencies that forced him to live in plastic tents and positive-pressure rooms all his life, until he met this girl… Loosely based on a true story, this movie took a few liberties with science that are a little hard to swallow. For our next round of “You Did This to Us,” David, Brett, Nicole, and guest Dominic Cichocki dug into this bit of melodramatic cheese, taking a hard look at Robert “Mr. Brady” Reed’s acting style, the overdone music, and wondering why Tod would fall for this girl, who is mildly pretty, but also horrible. Also, what is Buzz Aldrin doing here?Next episode, Movie-Go-Round rolls on back to the beginning! It’s time for the third rotation! Known in the West primarily as Bruce Lee’s teacher, Ip Man had a fascinating life story that Donnie Yen portrays with a Zen-like calm and a smoldering strength. This movie covers the period of the Japanese occupation of Man’s city of Foshan, China, and a cinematically exaggerated fight he had with a Japanese general.Join David, Brett, and Nicole as they dig into this film that includes constant breaking of precious household objects, food lust for a potato, and a ten-on-one fight with gnarly foley work that really makes you hear those limbs cracking.Next episode, Movie-Go-Round continues its second thematic round, rounding this rotation out with a You Did This to Us.
