Forrest, Conan Neutron, Kristina Oakes, and Kt Baldassaro start off dystopian december with Terry Gilliam's 1985 Brazil Starring a truly impressive cast, Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Michael Palin, Kim Greist, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins, and Ian Holm. Terry Gilliam paints a bleak picture of a society where every day citizens are completely complacent and distracted by Hyper-Consumerist spectacle and an endless multi-layered bureaucracy holds totalitarian control. Inspired by the idea of George Orwell's 1984, Former Monty Python artist turned auteur Terry Gilliam shows a state apparatus both absurdist and terrifying... and the story of one man who hasn't completely lost his humanity. #brazil #terrygilliam #montypython #robertdeniro #dystopian #dystopianfuture #december #moviepodcast #filmpodcast #movielovers #ianholm #britishfilm #criterioncollection #criterion Watch KT Baldassaro & Jared Skolnick's Girl in the Basement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcn2Q57VXEQ Join our discord: https://discord.gg/aVAjz7qn The Movie Night Extravaganza Patreon helps us keep the show going.. become a Patron and support the show!! https://patreon.com/MovieNightExtra Conan Neutron has music available from Conan Neutron & The Secret Friends https://neutronfriends.bandcamp.com OR if you want to become a Protonic Reversal patron: https://patreon.com/protonicreversal

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

When you're getting into the concepts of SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROWs many classic literary interpretations have stood the test of time. It's felt “1984” a few times this month and today's selection is no different but perhaps it feels a little closer in its mediocre society. Things are cluttered, disconnected and cartoonishly inept. Life lived under paperwork and forms in drab buildings, some of them you hope you never see inside of. The best of your reality is in your dreams but when the faces in your dreams appear in reality then you just might see a chance to rise above the drab world. A creative tour de force by Terry Gilliam early in his “post Python” film career, it remains a visually impressive work of humor and devastation that stands out amongst his unique filmmaking career. When talking about dystopia on film it's hard not to include Gilliam's 1985 film “BRAZIL” starring Jonathan Pryce, Kim Greist, Robert De Niro, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Bob Hoskins & Katherine Helmond to name a few. There is some good in this world. Good men who want to help. Good people who want to care for their neighbors. Can they make it in this very familair ultra-propagandized society? God willing, return I will to Old Brazil. Content warning: In discussing plotlines on Soap, we do bring up suicide and, very briefly, sexual assault. "Episode 4.1" (November 12, 1980) * Finally! It's one of the biggest cult favorite sitcoms of all time *and* it's also a show famous for having a LGBT character in the main cast. “Jonathan the Gymnast” (November 18, 1986) Technically, Who's the Boss? never did a gay episode, but because Danny Pintauro's sexuality looms large over this sitcom, many episodes seem a little gayer as a result — and this episode especially so. In it, Tony and Angela step into the kitchen to have a frank discussion of why Jonathan is not like other boys, and it really comes off like Who's the Boss? is asking viewers to overlook this aspect of the character. It's fucked up that this happened, and it's one of several occurrences that make Drew utter the phrase “Poor Jonathan.” Check out our sponsor, Spaces! Lady in White (1988)   An American supernatural mystery film directed, produced, written and scored by Frank LaLoggia, and starring Lukas Haas, Len Cariou, Alex Rocco and Katherine Helmond. The plot follows a schoolboy in 1962 upstate New York who becomes embroiled in the mystery surrounding a series of child murders after he witnesses the ghost of a young girl who was murdered in his school's coat closet.   Much of filming took place in Lyons, New York, which took advantage of the appropriate local lore and scenery. The story is based on a version of The Lady in White legend, concerning a woman who supposedly searches for her daughter in Durand-Eastman Park in Rochester, New York, where the director hails from.   One Dark Night (1983)   An American supernatural horror film directed by Tom McLoughlin and starring Meg Tilly, E. G. Daily, and Adam West. The film follows three teenagers sent to a mausoleum for the night as part of a high school initiation rite. A dead, telekinetic occultist returns from the dead and haunts them, forcing the three to survive the night inside the crypt. The film was conceived and filmed under the title Rest in Peace before Poltergeist, but due to post-production problems, the film was delayed and was released in theatres in 1983.  After a period of four years failing to sell the script to various studios McLoughlin and Hawes found a group of Mormon investors who were willing to finance the film for one million dollars on the condition that they started filming in three weeks.   Opening Credits/Introduction (01.52); With Nothing To Say Kitten Podcast (19.08); Oh My GOD!!! Welcome to the Ministry of information Podcast. Please complete all appropriate paperwork, including form B37-42 subsection C, and listen to the latest episode of Not A Bomb. On this vey bureaucratic episode, the guys discuss 1985's science fiction/dystopian film - Brazil. Directed by Monty Python troupe member, Terry Gilliam, Brazil is known as one of the most visually stunning films of all time with an especially “dark” ending. While the film had no problem being released internationally, Universal studios had an issue with the length of the film as well as the depressing ending. The story of what transpired behind the scenes is almost as fascinating as what showed up on the big screen!Brazil is a satirical take on corporate work life, which seems to be too close to home for both Troy and Brad. Additionally, Brazil sparks comparisons to Southland Tales which leads Brad to say a few nice words about the Richard Kelly opus. Brazil is directed by Terry Gilliam and stars Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, Ian Richardson, Peter Vaughan, and Kim Greist. Featuring a great lead role by character actor Jonathan Pryce and a wonderful supporting cast including: Katherine Helmond, Jim Broadbent, Charles McKeown, Kim Greist, Ian Holm, Peter Vaughn, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, and Robert DeNiro (in one of his earliest cameo performances). From the struggles in getting it made, the brilliance of what was created, and the subsequent attempts by Universal Studios (specifically President & CEO, Sid Sheinberg) to wrestle the film from Gilliam and shape it into a more palatable and audience-friendly product.  This was a great discussion between someone who loves the film and has seen it numerous times and someone who is viewing it for the very first time. This week we’re hopping back in time to the days of the pink bunkadoo, thieving from the Supreme Being, and cursing child actors, all while talking Terry Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy adventure ‘Time Bandits’ at the request of a patron. Time Bandits is a 1981 British fantasy adventure film co-written, produced, and directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ralph Richardson, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Peter Vaughan, and David Warner.Gilliam has referred to Time Bandits as the first in his "Trilogy of Imagination", followed by Brazil (1985) and ending with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). All are about the "craziness of our awkwardly ordered society and the desire to escape it through whatever means possible." All three films focus on these struggles and attempts to escape them through imagination: Time Bandits through the eyes of a child, Brazil through the eyes of a man in his thirties, and Munchausen through the eyes of an elderly man. Soap is an American sitcom television series that originally ran on ABC from September 13, 1977, until April 20, 1981. The show was created as a night-time parody of daytime soap operas, presented as a weekly half-hour prime time comedy. Similar to a soap opera, the show's story was presented in a serial format, and featured melodramatic plotlines including alien abduction, demonic possession, extramarital affairs, murder, kidnapping, unknown diseases, amnesia, cults, organised crime warfare, a communist revolution and teacher-student relationships. In 2007 it was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME",[2] and in 2010, the Tates and the Campbells ranked at number 17 in TV Guide's list of "TV's Top Families". The show was created, written, and executive produced by Susan Harris, and also executive produced by Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas. Each returning season was preceded by a 90-minute retrospective of the previous season. Two of these retrospectives were made available on VHS in 1994, but were not included on any DVD collections.[3] The show aired 85 episodes over the course of four seasons. Eight of these (including the final four) aired as one-hour episodes during the original run on ABC. These hour-long episodes were later split in two, yielding 93 half-hour episodes for syndication. Like most sitcoms of the era, Soap was videotaped rather than filmed, but this coincidentally helped further its emulation of the daytime soap opera format, as most such productions were also videotaped. All episodes are available on region 1 DVD in four box sets. There is a box set of season 1 on region 2 DVD. The series has rerun in syndication on local channels as well as on cable. The show starred Katherine Helmond and Cathryn Damon as sisters/matriarchs of their own families. The cast also included three former soap opera actors. Robert Mandan (Chester Tate) had previously appeared on Search for Tomorrow as a leading man for Mary Stuart, and Donnelly Rhodes (Dutch Leitner) had played the first husband of Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless. Arthur Peterson Jr. ("The Major") played Rev. John Ruthledge in the radio version of Guiding Light.

Who's the Boss? is an American sitcom television series created by Martin Cohan and Blake Hunter, which aired on ABC from September 20, 1984, to April 25, 1992. Produced by Hunter-Cohan Productions in association with Embassy Television (later Embassy Communications and ELP Communications) and Columbia Pictures Television, the series starred Tony Danza as an Italian-American former major league baseball player who relocates to Fairfield, Connecticut, to work as a live-in housekeeper for a divorced advertising executive, played by Judith Light. Also featured were Alyssa Milano, Danny Pintauro and Katherine Helmond. The show became one of the most popular sitcoms of the mid-to-late 1980s. The series was nominated for more than forty awards, including ten Primetime Emmy Award and five Golden Globe Award nominations, winning one of each. Also very successful in the ratings, Who's the Boss? consistently ranked in the top ten in the final primetime ratings between the years of 1985 and 1989, and has since continued in syndication worldwide.

This episode we have an amazing guest re-joining us, the fantastic Shaun from Comics2Movies and XCT. So you know straight up it is going to be a great show! Also the DJ is on fire this week and makes us laugh till we cry. We begin with a look at an upcoming book release that is the biography of Milicent Patrick, the lady who designed the creature from the Black Lagoon. She has an amazing story that is sure to inspire many of us. It also looks at the harassment she faced and the ongoing issues in Hollywood today. Also discussed is the reaction of various law enforcement agencies in response to undesirable behaviours such as cyber-bullying. The topic is the 40th anniversary of Mad Max! That’s right the original movie that created a legend is 40 years old. There was a party in Victoria to celebrate with fans even coming from America. Of course this means we have to discuss the amazing films in the Mad Max franchise (even the recent Fury Road – which is suggested is not Mad Max, but you decide and let us know). Also this is when the DJ makes us laugh till we cry, listen out for it, believe me, it is amazingly funny. Next up is the Professor with some information about the PS5 and VR. Things are getting better with improved technology on the VR/AR front with arcades opening up around the place, but what is happening in the home? We then have the regular shoutouts, birthdays, and remembrances. Concluding with a chat about what Shaun is up to in terms of new projects to look forward to, so if you are planning on going to any of the comic conventions you will have to stop by and say G’Day, and check out what he has on offer. Particularly with his new graphic novels, so go along and check out his website and be amazed by the wondrous collection of artwork in the various comic books and graphic novels available for purchase alongside the extensive offering of various memorabilia there. Movie Meltdown - Episode 419 (For our Patreon supporters.) This week we discuss Lost After Dark, Rest Stop and Stranger Things all before addressing this week's Sofa Theater feature - the 1988 film Lady in White directed by Frank LaLoggia. Once considered by some to be a "family-friendly" movie, we look at this sometimes surreal film that's filled with many, many inappropriate (and confusing) things. So we try to iron out all the details as we also make a list of items to add to potential childhood trauma. Plus we have the long-awaited "It" novel wrap-up. Was it worth all the time invested in reading it?! Listen and you'll hear for yourself.    Plus as we dial it up to 11 on most of our topics, we also bring up... warmongering art kid, having Pop Rocks for the first time, it seemed a lot darker... and a lot more dense, somebody's not obviously the monster sometimes, oh it's got kids in it, Katherine Helmond, I painted the figures, maybe she was still on fire, Dusty and Dart, The Bangles playing in the garage, looks like a frickin' ghoul, I felt the drugs that he was on, Judge Doom, Lukas Haas, a bitchin' camaro, a giant spider, Terry Gilliam, scales of Winona Ryder, walking from my house to the school bus, like kids or hate kids, finger painting with blood, Stephen King's greatest fear, kids are jerks, I'm not a Parapsychologist, Slim Pickens is a robot, 80's slashers, a stage play, as scary as Mona, my mind revisits that, Mr. Boogedy, just a little unconcise, take your handbook and go wait over there, Something Wicked This Way Comes, you expected it to be more fantasy and not more real life, a bad, out-of-shape T-1000, this whole thing is disturbing, Uncle Phil, it's portayed almost kind of like a ghost story... but then you realize - the ghost isn't the f-ing problem... it's people, The Black Hole, they got beat... after being choked and set on fire, child-molesting murders... you get extreme racism, you could have thrown her off a different cliff, horror references, that transition from Halloween to Christmas, hammering her face with his fist, we all have a cloakroom right, it was very dark... it was very scary, but yeah, just when you think it couldn't get any creepier... any more disturbing, creepy archery, and he gets this whole little ghost show, time flies by, visably choking, what if it was like that when we were kids... but when your kids - it seemed differt... you see it through different eyes, Tim Curry and Mystery Oreos.  Spoiler Alert: Random spoilers for Lost After Dark and full spoilers for Lady in White. So go watch at least Lady in White for spoiler-free listening. You have been warned!   "... it's all of that! It is fantasy. And it is ghosts. And it is real life. And it is traumatizing!"

On this week's episode, the gang finally finishes up the 2017 Listener Request Month by tackling the outright creepy "family" comedy, Overboard! How in the world did the police department allow this grift to start in the first place? What's with these kids constantly looking at pornography? And most importantly, what is Kurt Russell's end game here? PLUS: Michael Shannon is getting all sorts of new roles! Overboard stars Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, Mike Hagerty, and Roddy McDowall; directed by Garry Marshall.

This would be an all time classic episode, if we hadn't effed up the recording about 16 minutes in! Still, marvel at the amazing chemistry between Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in 1987's Overboard being mirrored by Ali Goodman and Jon Wolter. Be awed as Ali forgets to set up the microphone properly. Be completely unsurprised that Jon forgets to tell the trivia that this movie was turned into a 2006 South Korean sitcom called Couple or Trouble! All this, plus Ali raps! Sort of! Overboard also stars Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, Mike Hagarty, and Rowdy Roddy McDowell. It was directed by Laverne DeFazio's brother (Jon may have mistakenly said he was her husband - we aren't going to go back and confirm this) and written by Leslie "Ms. Mrs. Doubtfire" Dixon.

This week Zach learns about Terry Gilliam and his 1985 classic, Brazil. BRAZIL (1985) Brazil is a 1985 British film directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown, and Tom Stoppard. British National Cinema by Sarah Street describes the film as a "fantasy/satire on bureaucratic society" while John Scalzi's Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies describes it as a "dystopian satire". The film stars Jonathan Pryce and features Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, Michael Palin, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins, and Ian Holm. The film centres on Sam Lowry, a man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living a life in a small apartment, set in a consumer-driven dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines. Brazil 's bureaucratic, totalitarian government is reminiscent of the government depicted in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, except that it has a buffoonish, slapstick quality and lacks a Big Brother figure. Jack Mathews, film critic and author of The Battle of Brazil (1987), described the film as "satirizing the bureaucratic, largely dysfunctional industrial world that had been driving Gilliam crazy all his life". Though a success in Europe, the film was unsuccessful in its initial North America release. It has since become a cult film. The film is named after the recurrent theme song, "Aquarela do Brasil", as performed by Geoff Muldaur.
