Thirteen years after The Empire Strikes Back, the long-delayed finale arrived in 1996 — six episodes that brought the original trilogy to a close. Funding cuts had stalled production for more than a decade, but the conclusion was completed at last, with Anthony Daniels returning one final time as C-3PO, joined by Brock Peters as Darth Vader, John Lithgow's Yoda, and Ed Asner as Jabba the Hutt. Still carried by John Williams' score and the original sound effects, it's Return of the Jedi as you've never heard it. | #RRStarWarsLook for this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, and other podcast apps. The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, is widely regarded as the man who helped the band break through. He's inspired plays, films, and even an artistic installation by the Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller. He's now the subject of a new biography, Mr Moonlight, by Philip Norman.A Unesco-listed cathedral in Kyiv went up in flames on Sunday night after an intense Russian bombing attack. The Ukrainian government sees the attack on the historic Pechersk Lavra monastery complex as part of a sustained campaign to destroy the nation's cultural landmarks and identity. And in Kharkiv, workers at the state art museum have just moved its collection after a bombing raid caused fires. The Baltic republic of Estonia, which has an Eastern border with Russia, say it is planning for such attacks too. Samira Ahmed talks to its culture minister, Merilin Piipuu.Tributes have been pouring in for the Oscar-winning special effects pioneer Brian Johnson, who's died at the age of 87. He worked on the British television shows Thunderbirds and Space:1999, the latter taking him to Hollywood, and The Empire Strikes Back. One of those who has been influenced by his craft is the visual effects designer and filmmaker Paul Franklin, who explains why Brian Johnson changed the sci-fi landscape. What is it like to grow up in a town which lost its industry decades before you were even born? That's the story of Effie o Blaenau, Effie in Blaenau, a Welsh language film about a young woman looking for love to escape her weekly routine of unemployment and drinking. Lead actor Leisa Gwenllian joins Samira in the Front Row studio to discuss her role. When the Barbie film was released in 2023, it made over a billion dollars in just 17 days – making director Greta Gerwig the first ever woman to reach that milestone as a solo director. Now an exhibition charting the evolution of Barbie from her creation in 1959 to the present day is opening in Glasgow. It was first shown at London's Design Museum, where it proved one of the venue's most popular ever shows. Senior curator Danielle Thom and writer and fan Sara Sheridan discuss Barbie as art. In 1983, the team behind NPR's record-breaking Star Wars returned for the darker, colder middle chapter — The Empire Strikes Back, told across ten episodes. Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels were back as Luke and C-3PO, Billy Dee Williams reprised Lando Calrissian from the film, and a young John Lithgow voiced Yoda, all set to the original sound effects and John Williams' score. From the frozen wastes of Hoth to the clouds of Bespin, it's the Star Wars sequel as you've never heard it. | #RRStarWarsLook for this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, and other podcast apps. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 12, 2026 is: blandishment BLAN-dish-munt noun Blandishments are nice things that you say or do to convince someone to do something. Blandishment is usually used in the plural form. // Despite the many blandishments of the dressing room attendant, we were resolved not to overspend at the fashion boutique. See the entry > Examples: “… he sought to turn the attack around by saying his vast wealth—which has allowed him to richly fund his political endeavors—made him immune to the blandishments of plutocrats and corporate interests.” — Mark Z. Barabak, The Los Angeles Times, 23 Feb. 2026 Did you know? When Star Wars audiences first meet former smuggler Lando Calrissian—played iconically by Billy Dee Williams—in The Empire Strikes Back, he is full of blandishments, offering flattery (telling Leia “You truly belong here with us among the clouds”) and gifts to our heroes in the form of food and drink (“Will you join me for a little refreshment?”) in order to entice them into what we soon discover is a trap. Notably, before the whole sordid deal goes down (and before Lando's eventual redemption), Han Solo calls him “an old smoothie.” Lando's verbal smoothness can be linked to blandishment too: the word was formed from the verb blandish, meaning “to coax with flattery.” Blandish ultimately comes from the Latin adjective blandus, meaning “influencing others by flattery,” source too of our adjective bland, which typically describes things boring and flavorless but which can also mean “smooth and soothing in manner or quality”—a meaning that also applies to everyone's favorite Cloud City administrator.

In the sixty-fifth episode of Making Mt. Rushmore, host/moderator Steve Riddle welcomes Matt Ferrell and James Gruenberg to discuss which Star Wars Characters deserve a place on their respective lists. Is Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker a no-brainer? What about Luke Skywalker? Does Han Solo grab a spot? Does Obi-Wan Kenobi and Emperor Palpatine deserve a place? After that, they discuss which Star Wars Movies/TV Shows will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that Return of the Jedi shouldn't get a spot? Will the Empire Strikes Back be included? Is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the conversation? What about Revenge of the Sith or the Bad Batch?
In this episode I chat with visual effects supervisor, second unit director and digital pre-visualisation pioneer David Dozoretz about a career that traces the entire arc of how modern filmmaking shifted from analogue to digital — and how, somewhere in the middle of that shift, pre-vis went from a curious side experiment to a fundamental part of how films get planned and shot. David talks about growing up in Phoenix, falling in love with cinema the day his sister snuck him into the projection booth at the Cine Capri during The Empire Strikes Back asteroid sequence, and how a chance encounter with a Lucasfilm coffee-table book in a university bookstore set him on the path to ILM. He arrived at ILM in 1991 as an intern, became known as "the computer nerd in the art department and the art nerd in the computer department," and ended up bridging the gap between the two as digital began to take over.We get into his first feature — the original Jurassic Park — his year-long apprenticeship in the legendary ILM art department alongside Doug Chiang, Ty Ellingson, Harley Jessup, Mark Moore and Stefan Dechant, and the time he had to split a $1,400 piece of 3D software into two $700 purchase orders to get round ILM's general-manager sign-off threshold. It's a small story but it tells you everything about the era — digital tools were arriving faster than the institutions running things knew what to do with them.A big part of the conversation focuses on the early years of digital pre-visualisation. David did the first major digital previs sequence in mainstream cinema — the train and helicopter sequence in Brian De Palma's Mission: Impossible, the work John Knoll asked him to do that's now credited as one of the reasons the sequence got greenlit. From there he went on to spend four years working with George Lucas on The Phantom Menace, building the entire pod race in previs (a 25-minute version that almost no one has ever seen got whittled down to the 9-and-a-half-minute final), establishing his now-famous three rules of previs (no textures, no motion blur, no shadows) and then immediately having to break all three of them to convey the sense of speed and floating in the pod race itself. There are some lovely George Lucas stories too, including the time George walked into the editing room and reacted to David's droid-factory post-vis with "honestly, I was a little worried about that one — looks like it's gonna work," and the moment when George trailed off mid-sentence trying to describe a desert landscape and David — a 21-year-old kid — finished the thought with "John Ford?", which David thinks is the moment Lucas decided he could trust him. Later in the conversation we move into David's own company, Persistence of Vision, and his work on Titan A.E., Behind Enemy Lines, JJ Abrams' Mission: Impossible III, the 2009 Star Trek reboot (including the previs realisation that Vulcan being orange meant the costumes — originally designed to evoke 70s NASA — had to be completely redesigned) and Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, where David served as second unit director on the first digital stereoscopic film and the production was effectively beta-testing the cameras Jim Cameron was building for Avatar. We finish on Zafari, David's 52-episode children's animated series rendered almost entirely in Unreal Engine — one of the earliest large-scale uses of real-time rendering in mainstream animation, which saved 30% of the production budget — and on a wider conversation about AI, the future of filmmaking, the importance of human authenticity, and David's lovely closing thought: study the art and history of cinema, study the drawing, not just the pencil. The tools will keep changing. The language won't. We loved the cinematography of Maul: Shadow Lord so much that it inspired us to go back to our roots and analyze the cinematography of the Star Wars Original Trilogy. We specifically focus on Luke Skywalker in three character-building scenes: the binary sunset from A New Hope, when he meets Yoda in Empire Strikes Back, and when he resists the Emperor in Return of the Jedi. We discuss lighting, costumes, framing, and so much more! We hope you enjoy this deep dive into one of cinema's most iconic characters.Watch our special EXTRA 200th episode for free on our Patreon (it's different from this audio episode): https://www.patreon.com/posts/its-our-200th-156470434Support us on Patreon for as little as $3/month: patreon.com/MostThingsKenobiInstagram: most_things_kenobiWebsite: mostthingskenobi.comYouTube: MostThingsKenobiThreads: most_things_kenobiTumblr: MostThingsKenobi

It's as if this is Maul's own personal version of The Empire Strikes Back! He loses almost everything in this episode as the Empire closes in and his team is dropping like flies, and his temporary allies abandon him. What's a former Sith Lord to do? Not only that, but his droid parts are faultering, and he feels the pain, limiting his fighting abilities, and the Inquisitors take advantage. This is not how he planned things. We dig into what holds up (everything — the tone, Yoda, the carbonite scene, Harrison Ford ad-libbing the most iconic line in film history), what doesn't (Leia kissing Luke is a problem, and we need to talk about it), and the sincerity in this movie that almost nothing made today can replicate. Plus: Cody makes the boldest defense of "Last Jedi Luke" you'll ever hear, Dave argues that Lando Calrissian has been wrongly slandered for 46 years, and we explore the wild behind-the-scenes stories. We give a Pastor's Corner on "Do or do not, there is no try," and pick our winners and losers. Bonus: the Q'orianka Kilcher / James Cameron Avatar lawsuit. Will Masters of the Universe be a box office disaster? And a Terrence Malick rant nobody asked for.
I get to tackle both the novel and comic book version of the first official STAR WARS sequel: SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE. Does this has pretty solid continuity despite being conjured up before EMPIRE STRIKES BACK? What details are different in the comic book version? All that plus a clip from an interview featuring author Alan Dean Foster! Hosts Josh and Jamie and special guest writer-director Alex Russell (LURKER, THE BEAR, BEEF) discuss 90s revisionist westerns co-starring a villainous Gene Hackman with a double feature of Clint Eastwood's iconic, Oscar-winning and deeply weary/melancholy funeral for the genre UNFORGIVEN (1992) + Sam Raimi's playfully manic cartoon of the same archetypes and iconography in THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995). Mike and Chris close the book on Season Seven with "The Conspirators," a 1978 episode that takes Columbo somewhere the series rarely ventured: the murky, morally weighted world of real geopolitical conflict. Clive Revill — Tony-nominated stage actor, Matilda's trainer in the boxing kangaroo film of the same name, and the original voice of Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back — plays Joe Devlin, an Irish poet and public charmer who moonlights as a gun-runner for the IRA. Devlin doesn't irritate Columbo the way most killers do — he disarms him. They exchange verse, play darts, share whiskey, and trade jokes about their respective cultures, two sides of the same immigrant coin. We weigh whether all that conviviality comes at the cost of tension. An episode this pleasant can sometimes forget to be dangerous.Directed by Leo Penn and written by Howard Berk, "The Conspirators" is not Season Seven's sharpest hour. As the last Columbo of the 1970s, the last on NBC, and the last new case the Lieutenant would face for nearly eleven years, it leaves a lot to be desired.
