Welcome back to the Fintech Takes podcast. I'm Alex Johnson, joined by Evan Weinberger, Bloomberg Law reporter and bank regulation whisperer (and the rare guest who can quote both Caddyshack and Empire Strikes Back in a single episode, enjoy). This week's show unpacks the JP Morgan Chase open banking fee bombshell (they're now charging for access to their open banking APIs) — the story Evan himself and Bloomberg colleague Paige Smith broke — and the ripple effect it's having across fintech, data aggregators, and regulators who seem genuinely unprepared for how fast it's all moving. If there's a central theme, it's this: When the banks move first, everyone else scrambles. We dig into Chase's strategy, the pricing breakdowns, and what the “value capture” narrative says about the future of open finance. But that's just the start. Highlights include: -Why the CFPB is simultaneously gutting its rulebook and losing most of its staff -Why regulators are quietly abandoning disparate impact and what it means for fair lending -Why the Trump administration is targeting CDFIs (even though they serve many rural Southern areas aligned with the GOP) -How a data fight might unite crypto VCs and big box merchants (yes, really) This episode has it all: open banking drama, more regulatory whiplash, and fintech caught in the middle wondering what the hell just happened. Robocop 2 (1990)Directed By: Irvin KershnerStarring: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Belinda Bauer, The Old Man returnsHere's a sequel to our best performing episode ever - because you've clearly been clamoring for it and not because we want continued success (if we wanted continued success, why would we talk about Lou Ferrigno movies?). This time Murphy has not only a police strike on his hands, but some shady OCP business is trying to ruin his mojo by scrambling his prime directives and launch a drug addicted upgrade!

Today we're heading to the Sudan—dusty, dangerous, and politically explosive. We're talking about Onwards to Omdurman, a gripping book by military historian Keith Surridge, which examines the often-overlooked campaigns leading up to Kitchener's famous victory in 1898. But I'm not in the interviewer's chair for this one. Instead, friend of the show and fellow historian Chris Brice takes the reins for a fascinating deep dive into empire, ambition, and the logistics of war in the late Victorian age. Generation Skywalker makes a long overdue return to vintage Star Wars figure focus episodes. Over the next few months we'll be releasing a series of shows covering each of the bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back and the infamous scene onboard Darth Vader's Star Destroyer. To kick off The Bounty Hunter Capture Pod, in this first part we're hunting all things Bossk. We discuss the character, the figure, the card back, the mail-away offer, the multipacks, beyond the toys items and much, much more. Ron Salvatore is back for another Rebel Alliance briefing on the figure and blows our tiny little minds with another knowledge bomb. Mark Andrews from Variant Villains also joins us to talk fat lips and toxic limbs. It's a Bossk bonanza, full of information, observations and a few laughs along the way. Jez's Bossk impersonation alone makes episode an essential listen. So download now and let's go hunting.

Episode SummaryIn a galaxy flooded with content, storytelling is no longer a skill—it's the rebellion. In this milestone 50th episode, Nish and David Granger frame the conversation through the lens of the original Star Wars trilogy—exploring how brands moved from story-rich origins (A New Hope), through algorithmic obedience and commoditization (The Empire Strikes Back), to a moment of reckoning (Return of the Jedi). They dive into why storytelling is the last true differentiator in an AI-driven landscape, how CMOs became “chief algorithm officers,” and why creative ops leaders must become the Rebel Alliance—fighting not just for brand expression, but for brand soul. This episode isn't just about marketing—it's about what you choose to stand for. Key TakeawaysStorytelling isn't decoration—it's differentiation. It's not the packaging. It's the product.Creative commoditization is real—and the Death Star is already fully operational. The question is whether you fight it.The most courageous brands aren't chasing trends—they're building lore.Algorithms reward noise. Storytelling builds meaning. One optimizes for today. The other creates forever fans.Red Bull didn't just sponsor sports. It built a media empire. It didn't buy attention—it earned identity. That blueprint is still possible. From Listening to Thining: From Brand Complacency to Creative RebellionUse these prompts to reflect solo—or spark bold conversations with your team:What stories is your brand telling—accidentally or intentionally? Are you feeding the content machine—or creating stories with staying power? How has your team grown stronger (or weaker) in its narrative instincts? What would your team do differently if storytelling was the mission, not just a deliverable? What's the weirdest, most human thing your brand has ever done? And why did it work? What's your brand's version of the Rebel Alliance? Who are you trying to awaken?Guest: David Granger, Content Director & Co-Founder at Arc & Foundry | Former Head of Content at Red Bull Media House, cinch, PMIDavid Granger has spent over two decades turning stories into strategy. From his roots in journalism to building Red Bull's iconic storytelling machine, David now leads Arc & Foundry, a content marketing agency that crafts emotionally resonant brand narratives. In this episode, he joins Nish to map the creative rebellion—past, present, and future.
Forty years ago after half a decade of undeniable success (The Big Chill, Body Heat, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark) four-time Oscar-nominated writer/directed Lawrence Kasdan cashed in that blank check to make his dream project....and old-fashioned Western. And to do so, he assembled an All-Star cast lead by Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, and Scott Glenn for this sprawling tale of corrupt sheriff's, reluctant heroes, land disputes, family vendettas, benevolent bar-matrons, small towns under siege, dangerous posses, and of course lots of shootouts. :) Sadly it got lost in the shuffle of a summer dominated by the likes of Back to the Future and Rambo but forty years later, this remains one of THE premiuer modern westerns. Also co-starring Brian Dennehy, Jeff Goldblum, Rosanna Arquette, and Linda Hunt AND featuring a rip-roaring score from Bruce Broughton (Tombstone), it's time to saddle up and head on out to.....SILVERADO!!!!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This episode examines civil war manifesting itself in the world in the west in the 21st century and some of my modest forecasts of war weather in the next few years. Dr. David Betz and others have started to float the balloons of probability and possibility of civil kinetic conflict in the West. My Storming America Series covers the gamut of what a spontaneous attack in the US will look like when terror cells launch a simultaneous attack on the US homeland which in my mind is the primary man-made vector for civil war in America. I cover it in Episodes 37, 41-43, 49-50 and 62 of my Chasing Ghosts podcast. This is a weird one to encapsulate, but it was based on an idea I had while re-watching Star Trek the Next Generation and I had to explore it with my fellow Quackcasters, Banes and Tantz. I believe it's generally better to enjoy something in the order it was created rather than the chronological order of the story because you'll understand it so much better in terms of why things are as they are, the creative and aesthetic choices and cultural impact. Re-watching all of Star Trek the Next Generation in order taught me so much about how and why the show and characters developed: NOT from a lore and story perspective but from a practical, technical perspective. I'm watching for the stories but I also notice different filming techniques, lighting choices, sets, props, costumes, how and why the actors perform and act in certain ways, line deliveries, and a million other things: basically the reality of the thing and it's interesting to think how that conflicts with fan lore, or “this is why they went this way with the character” vs “the character did that because…” And it's especially powerful if you can connect it to the culture and current events of the time in which it was created. Now in the world more often than ever people look at creative projects in a kind of cultural vacuum, totally isolated from any cultural context except their own current culture at the time they view the thing, which is bad enough but people's passion of reboots and prequels compounds this. Whether it's Marvel, Dr Who, Star Trek, Star Wars or whatever you'll see this happen with any popular creative IP: the established meaning of these things will be changed constantly due to retconns and a sort of fan lore takes over as a way to make sense of it all. I think it's important to understand the real reason why things are as they are… For example Lando Calrisian wears a cape in The Empire Strikes Back because the costume people dress Billy Dee Williams that way to show he was the ruler of the Cloud City, to give him authority and majesty, while the prequel film, Hans Solo, retconns it into him wearing capes because he's a silly pansexusal fop, totally changing and misunderstanding all aspects of the character. That said though it is also very important that later generations are able to develop their own cultural connections with established IPs in their own way and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact if they can't then those IPs will die, their continued interest and passion is what keeps those things alive and current! It's just important not to lose sight of why things really developed as they did and enjoy things for what they are rather than for what they are AFTER retconns. Hahaha, I hope this makes some sense? What are the most annoying bits of fan lore you've come across? Personally I can't stand the Warhammer 40k lore now, it just gets worse and worse as time goes on. Karen Hao has been warning us about Sam Altman's OpenAI for a while now. In her bestselling Empire of AI, she argues that the Silicon Valley startup is a classic colonial power, akin to Britain's East India Company. Like those colonial merchants and policy makers who wrapped profit-seeking in civilizing missions, OpenAI cloaks its relentless scaling ambitions behind the noble goal of "ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity." But as Hao reveals, this pursuit comes at enormous cost—environmental devastation, exploited labor, and the extraction of data from communities worldwide. The parallels are striking: a private corporation accumulating unprecedented resources and power, operating with minimal oversight while externalizing the harms of its empire-building to those least able to resist. Five Key Takeaways 1. OpenAI is a Modern Corporate Empire Hao argues OpenAI operates like the British East India Company—a private corporation wrapped in a "civilizing mission" that extracts resources globally while externalizing costs to vulnerable communities. The company's stated goal of "benefiting all humanity" serves as ideological cover for profit-driven expansion.2. AI Development Didn't Have to Be This Destructive Before OpenAI's "scaling at all costs" approach, researchers were developing smaller, more efficient AI models using curated datasets. OpenAI deliberately chose quantity over quality, leading to massive computational requirements and environmental damage that could have been avoided.3. The Climate and Social Costs Are Staggering McKinsey estimates global energy grids need to add 2-6 times California's annual consumption to support AI infrastructure expansion. This means retired coal plants staying online, new methane turbines in working-class communities, and data centers consuming public drinking water in drought-prone areas.4. The Business Model May Be Unsustainable Despite raising $40 billion (Silicon Valley's largest private investment), OpenAI hasn't demonstrated how to monetize at that scale. Subscriptions don't cover operational costs, leading to considerations of thousand-dollar monthly fees or surveillance-based advertising models.5. Resistance is Possible and Already Happening Communities worldwide are successfully pushing back—from Chilean residents stalling Google data centers for five years to artists suing over intellectual property theft. Hao argues collective action across AI's supply chain can force a shift toward more democratic, community-centered development.Karen Hao is an award-winning journalist covering the impacts of artificial intelligence on society. She writes for publications including The Atlantic and leads the Pulitzer Center's AI Spotlight Series, a program training thousands of journalists around the world on how to cover AI. She was formerly a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, covering American and Chinese tech companies, and a senior editor for AI at MIT Technology Review. Her work is regularly taught in universities and cited by governments. She has received numerous accolades for her coverage, including an American Humanist Media Award and American National Magazine Award for Journalists Under 30. She received her Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from MIT.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. For this episode, we asked our MTK Patrons what Obi-Wan related topic would they like us to cover, and of course they delivered! We received several amazing answers (which we will cover in future episodes), but the one that we decided to cover this week is to discuss (and defend) Obi-Wan's famous line from "Empire Strikes Back", the one that has become rather controversial across the fandom: "from a certain point of view." Was it really an acceptable explanation to give Luke? What had happened if Obi-Wan DID tell Luke, plainly, who his father was early on? Would it have changed the course of what we know today? CAN the line be defended at all? You'll find out what we have to say on the matter in this episode. Darth Vader actor David Prowse spoiled The Empire Strikes Back's biggest surprise, two years before the film premiered in theaters. So why was he just as shocked as the rest of the audience to hear his character utter those five iconic words on opening night? To celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, join host David Quinn as he revisits the story of how Star Wars' greatest twist remained a secret known to only a handful of people during the making of the film. Learn how the twist was devised, who knew about it, and how it became one of the all-time moments in one of the best films in cinema history. And find out why some Star Wars fans were discussing the twist at length as far back as 1978! This is truly an epic, wild tale you'll have to hear to believe. Editor - Eric Kissack, ACE THE STUDIO editor Eric Kissack began journey his journey with series co-creator and star, Seth Rogen, on the Sasha Baron Cohen film, Bruno. From there their partnership would continue, spanning projects like Sausage Party, Black Monday and others. For their current project, they would be working closer than ever before, as Seth's vision for THE STUDIO necessitated Eric's presence on set, fostering a tighter creative process that brought editorial not only on location, but into aspects of prouction. THE STUDIO tells the story of Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of the floundering film production company Continental Studios. A self-described cinephile, Matt struggles to balance Continental's corporate aims in an increasingly IP-driven entertainment landscape with his own ambition to produce quality films. ERIC KISSACK, ACE Born and raised in New York City, Eric Kissack fell in love with movies when he went to see The Empire Strikes Back at the tender age of 4, a questionable parenting decision but a pivotal career moment. He spent every free moment after that watching films and went on to study film at Brown University. After school, Eric bumbled about for a bit but then got an early break as a film editor and spent 20 years cutting funny films in New York and Los Angeles. He had the pleasure of working on Role Models, Brüno, Cedar Rapids, The Dictator, Horrible Bosses 2, Daddy's Home, Instant Family, Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Bottoms. In 2012, he directed his first feature, Love, Sex & Missed Connections, an independent comedy that won several festival awards including Best Narrative Feature at the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Special Jury Award for First Time Filmmaker at the Traverse City Film Festival. In 2014, he directed a short film called The Gunfighter that won over two dozen awards including the Audience Award for Best Short at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival and was included in the 2015 Saatchi & Saatchi's New Director's Showcase at the Cannes Lions. In 2016, Eric decided to spend more time in television. He edited Black Monday, Rutherford Falls and Pam & Tommy among other shows. He was nominated for an Emmy for his work editing Veep and an ACE Award for his work editing The Good Place. Now that ANDOR has wrapped up, we aren't quite ready yet to let it go. We scoured the web to collect the best interview highlights featuring Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy, who provides valuable insights into the finished series and gives us a lot to talk about. FORTNITE recently revealed an all-new A.I. powered Darth Vader character that players can interact with via voice text, so naturally because it's the internet, people started to manipulate the “Sith-Bot” to say outrageous and unthinkable things. Of course, we had to try ourselves so you can hear what Darth has to say about Rebel Force Radio. It ain't pretty. Big Announcement! Andrew "The Commissioner" Mount "strikes" again from his hidden rebel base, this time forcing us to watch Episode V of the Star Wars saga, "The Empire Strikes Back." Which, incidentally, depending on the age of the A.Ron you ask, is either his favoritist movie of all time, or top three. Either way, it's a treat. Once again, Jim and I try to sort through our childhood and adult memories of this holiest of trilogies to give it the treatment it deserves. With Trump's second major tax bill clearing committee and heading to the House floor—packed, as promised, with massive giveaways to the ultra-wealthy—we're revisiting our timely conversation with Samantha Jacoby of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Originally recorded before Trump's reelection, this episode breaks down the real impact of the tax bill that Trump signed into law back in 2017: trillions added to the deficit, corporations and billionaires cashing in, and working families left behind. Spoiler alert: the rich get richer, and everybody else gets screwed. As Congress considers doubling down on the same failed policies, this conversation couldn't be more relevant. Samantha Jacoby is the Deputy Director of Federal Tax Policy with the Center's Federal Fiscal Policy division. Samantha focuses on U.S. federal income tax issues, including corporate and business taxation, individual income taxation, and climate tax policy. This episode originally aired March 19, 2024. As we kick off ten weeks of 80s-themed episodes, we're returning to a goofy little game we invented a couple of years ago. The idea is to pluck characters from randomly selected movies from the year 1980, insert them into other movies, and discuss the ramifications. Potential movies include Flash Gordon, Caddyshack, Popeye, Xanadu, The Empire Strikes Back, and many more. So grab a hideously overpriced tub of popcorn and get comfortable. In all likelihood, this is gonna get weird. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! The Flopcast on Instagram! The Flopcast on Bluesky! The Flopcast on Mastadon! The Best Movie Plot Twists I came across an article that was discussing how a good movie will lead you down one path and then in a “Plot Twist” send you down a different and completely unexpected new path. That got me thinking about what were my most memorable plot twists from movies that I have watched over the years. I have come up with four that have stayed with me. What are your favorites? The Sixth Sense (1999) - The twist redefines the entire story, forcing viewers to rethink every scene. It's iconic for its emotional weight and subtle foreshadowing, often cited as the gold standard of plot twists. In this case you learn that Bruce Willis' character Malcolm Crowe was actually deceased. I hate to admit it but I never saw this coming. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - The revelation Darth Vader is Luke's Father altered the saga's emotional core and is still one of the most quoted twists ever. Planet of the Apes (1968) - we are talking about the original here with Charlton Heston. The last scene leads up to the final payoff making it one of the most memorable twists in cinema. Se7en (1995) - The climax delivers a horrific surprise that ties the story's themes together. It's a twist that's both brutal and unforgettable, often debated for its boldness. The twist, John Doe played by Kevin Spacey manipulates Mills played by Brad Pitt emotionally to commit the seventh deadly sin. Braden's Pics: Usual Suspects Fight Club Shutter Island Memento
