Can You Really Read The Bible Like That?!

    Mere Fidelity

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 23, 2025 52:59

This episode of Mere Fidelity is about the boundaries and controls on theological and typological biblical interpretation - essentially asking "what are the brakes on theological exegesis?" — This month: The Body God Gives: A Biblical Response to Transgender Theory by Robert Smith - a weighty volume addressing crucial contemporary issues with biblical faithfulness. Get 40% off at lexhampress.com/merefidelity — Derek Rishmawy, Alastair Roberts, and Brad East explore the tension between: The Promise: Rediscovering richer, deeper ways of reading Scripture that go beyond simple historical-grammatical methods - finding typological patterns, narrative connections, and symbolic meanings that link Old and New Testament figures and events (like seeing Jesus as the new David, or Joseph as a type of Christ). The Problem: The legitimate concern that once you start reading Scripture typologically or allegorically, where do you stop? What prevents interpretation from becoming purely subjective, limited only by the interpreter's imagination? Key Discussion Points: Steelmanning the critics - Derek asks Alastair to acknowledge valid concerns about "wax nose" interpretations that can be twisted to support any position Historical precedent - How the apostles themselves read the Old Testament in ways that seem to go beyond original authorial intent Different paradigms for meaning - Brad argues for multiple faithful readings within proper bounds, using his "infinite sets" mathematical analogy, while Derek pushes back with concerns about authorial intention Practical controls they suggest: Alastair emphasizes grounding readings in the text's own literary patterns and connections Reading within the "rule of faith" (basic Christian orthodoxy) Alastair's "tree" metaphor - distinguishing between core interpretations (strong branches) and speculative ones (thin branches you don't put weight on) Reading in community rather than in isolation Alastair's key point - Understanding meaning as something that unfolds through time, not just locked in original context Brad advocates for reading Scripture with multiple paradigms (not just Paul's argumentative style, but also narrative like Song of Songs) The conversation shows Derek wrestling with concerns about going beyond authorial intention, while Brad takes a more "maximalist" approach and Alastair provides detailed textual grounding for typological readings. They ultimately argue that while there are real dangers in uncontrolled typological reading, the solution isn't to abandon these deeper interpretive methods but to practice them more carefully and responsibly. — Chapters 01:21 Grammatical Historical vs. Typological Exegesis 03:40 Steel Man Strikes Again 06:07 If This Were Wrong, How Would We Know? 09:05 Wax Nose 11:07 Gifted Interpreters and Accessibility 13:01 The Gigi Rule 16:48 Infinite Ways to Get It Right 19:08 Stories and Arguments 22:05 It's Alive! 26:19 Choose Your Own Adventure 29:14 More Anachronism Please 30:23 Anachronism and Authorial Intention 34:39 How Meaning Works 40:10 Asking the Text a Question 43:02 Practice Safe Reading 51:32 Resources

In this episode of the Tough Girl Podcast, we're joined by Christine Reed—an American long-distance backpacker and award-winning author—whose life changed when she took her first steps on the Appalachian Trail in 2015. With no prior backpacking experience, Christine dove headfirst into the unknown, seeking healing, purpose, and a sense of identity. Since then, Christine has hiked thousands of miles, lived out of a van, and carved a creative path through storytelling. Her debut memoir, Alone in Wonderland, captured her raw and powerful journey of self-discovery, while her latest anthology Blood Sweat Tears amplifies the voices of women+ on trail—sharing unfiltered stories about periods, pain, perseverance, and everything in between. We talk about grief, growth, writing through discomfort, and the courage it takes to follow your passions even when they feel far outside your comfort zone. Read along with our chosen scripture: Genesis 42 The relationships we fight for today will echo into future generations. Joseph's story shows the power of multi-generational influence. In this episode of our series, "Stories," we dive deep into the life of Joseph from the Old Testament. Join us as we explore the profound impact of our decisions and how they shape not only our own stories but also the stories of those around us—often for generations to come. We begin with a light-hearted anecdote about a haircut gone wrong, illustrating how some decisions stick with us longer than we expect. From there, we transition into the weighty decisions that can alter the course of our lives, whether they relate to relationships, finances, or personal integrity. As we unpack Joseph's journey—from being sold into slavery by his brothers to rising to power in Egypt—we highlight the importance of choosing how we respond to adversity. Joseph's story serves as a powerful reminder that while we may not control what happens to us, we do have the power to write our own narrative in response. We also reflect on the multi-generational influence of our actions, encouraging listeners to consider the legacy they are creating through their choices. What story do you want to tell? How can you make decisions today that will positively impact your future and the future of those you love? Join us for this thought-provoking discussion, and be inspired to take charge of your story! Sitting on a Suitcase: Psychoanalytic Stories (Karnac Books, 2025) contains eighteen moving tales of disparate Jewish lives from Eliat Aram, Leslie B. Brissett, Louisa Diana Brunner, Halina Brunning, Leila Djemal, Shmuel Erlich, Mira Erlich-Ginor, Franca Fubini, Stan Gold, Larry Hirschhorn, Susan Kahn, Alicia E. Kaufmann, Olya Khaleelee, James Krantz, Vega Zagier Roberts, Edward R. Shapiro, Mannie Sher, and Marlene Spero. The book begins with a thought-provoking preface from former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and ends with a sensitive epilogue from Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, both providing societal containment for what comes between them. The contents also include two non-Jewish German writers, Claudia Nagel and Dorothee von Tippelskirch-Eissing, who between them provide a bravely honest introduction and conclusions to the stories contained within. Also contained within the book are black and white photographs of the contributors' young selves that provide an additional evocative layer to the words contained within. Plus four black and white line drawings to illustrate each of the four parts of the book: Orthodox beginnings, Sitting on the boundary: Marginality and belonging, Emigration and identity, and Will history repeat itself? This was not an easy book for its authors to write, revisiting the past unlocked painful memories and re-awoke fears of persecution. The manuscript was nearing completion when Hamas attacked a kibbutzim on October 7, 2023 and the war in Gaza followed. Incidents of anti-Semitism increased worldwide and questions were raised whether the book should be held back. However, its themes became more relevant than ever and these stories need to be read. Themes such as issues around having a voice, or finding a voice during formative years; finding a family through friends; a sense of not belonging because of constant relocation, or finding a sense of belonging through family and friends. Aspects of life that resonate with us all alongside the deeper theme of the impact of Jewish identity on every facet of life. This is a book full of emotion and meaning that needs to be read by all with an interest in humanity and fostering connection and understanding across nations. Learn more about your ad choices. It's been a while since we've heard from Ryan and Tanya Avery on the Rokcast. They join Robby talking about the season upon us, the arrival of Robby's long awaited Rokstock/Tikka/6UM rifle, and more random thoughts. Since this episode recorded, Robby's put about 30 rounds through the new Rokstock topped with a Swarovski Z5 2-10X https://www.swarovskioptik.com/us/en/hunting/products/rifle-scopes/z5-i-plus/z5-plus/z5-plus-2-10x42-bt Shooting the Sierra 115 grain DTAC NR in front of 64.5gr of N570, Robby chronographed the load from his 19-inch barrel at 3155fps (his 270 WSM was clocking a 140 grain Berger at 3249 from a 24-barrel for comparison.) The overall length of the new rifle is an inch shorter--including the Unknown Munitions Suppressor--compared to the 270 WSM. The Rokstock based rifle weighs in at 7lb 15oz, just two ounces more than the 270 WSM. Accuracy for two (3) shot groups at 200 & 300 yards averaged at just over 1MOA: 2.25" & 3.5" respectively. Since Robby primarily shoots hash marks vs. dialing, he was particularly interested in the trajectory. Even with 100 fps decrease, the Z5 hashmarks lined up almost identically to the Z5 on his 270WSM. -Center crosshair = 100/200 yards -1st hashmark = 300 yards -2nd hashmark = 400 yards -3rd hashmark = 500 yards -4th hashmark = 570 yards The Z5 does have an elevation turret but Robby will need some time to learn it and report back. For those interested, the 6UM is made from the 6.5 SAUM necked down to 6mm with the shoulder blown out to 40 degrees. This cartridge was primarily developed by Unknown Munitions in Post Falls, Idaho. The key to a powerful presentation isn't just telling stories – it's uncovering the lessons within them. When you share a personal experience or an impactful moment, you're not just recounting events; you're inviting your audience to see the world through your eyes, to feel what you felt, and to learn from what you lived.  Your stories become more than just a narrative – they can spark change in the hearts and minds of your audience. This episode is the audio from a live show we did with three of our recent Thought Leader Academy grads: Moe Boles, Melinda Hrynewycz, and Sara Ecklein. You'll hear each woman deliver a 10-minute version of the signature talk they created with us, so you can see and hear them in action, demonstrating how drawing insights from personal experiences can create engaging, memorable, and impactful messages. Clarity and Brevity are the highest creativity. But “clear and brief” does not mean simple and predictable. One the most talented writers of advertising in the world would be surprised to hear me call him that. Jonathan Edward Durham is a novelist. He recently posted this random thought.“‘Why am I so sad today?' I ask myself after staring at my little handheld sadness machine and clicking all the sad little things that will definitely make me sad.”You may not agree with Durham's statement, but you will agree it was artfully crafted. What Durham gave us was clarity and brevity without predictability. This is the mark of a great ad writer.“Why am I so sad today?” immediately gets our attention. We are compelled to keep reading. We are surprised that he owns “a little handheld sadness machine.” But our cleverness allows us to translate it as “iPhone” and we receive a tiny spasm of delight. You have never heard of “a little handheld sadness machine” but you knew exactly what it was.His 30-word sentence demonstrated clarity, brevity, and creativity, but none of what Jonathan Edward Durham wrote was simple or predictable.Durham's ability to bring us – his readers, his listeners, his customers – into active participation in a one-way conversation is pure genius.Jonathan Edward Durham causes us to become engaged with what he is saying. You can do it, too.“Time + Place + Character + Emotion.” That's it. That's how Stephen Semple turns a weak story into a powerful one in his famous TED-X talk. Here's how Jonathan Edward Durham uses Time + Place + Character + Emotion to tell us a story in less than 30 seconds.“About two years ago, we moved across the country. It was a big, stressful move, and anxieties were high all around, and it had only been about six months since we rescued Jack, so he was really just beginning to adjust to having a forever home. Needless to say, Jack didn't understand why a bunch of strangers were taking all of our things, and he was having a very, very ruff time with the whole process.”“We want Jack to live forever. That's why we feed him The Wizard's Magic dog food.”Jonathan Edward Durham's wonderful story became an excellent ad with my addition of just 16 words. “We want Jack to live forever. That's why we feed him The Wizard's Magic dog food.”You already know how to write the 16 words. Now you need to learn how to tell a wonderful story in 76 words like Durham did.Time + Place + Character + Emotion. Give it a try.Roy H. WilliamsPS – Most people use too many words to make too small a point. The average writer wraps lots of words around a small idea. Inflated sentences are fluffy and empty like a hot air balloon. Good writers deliver a big idea quickly. Tight sentences hit hard. – Indy Beagle“Facts tell. Stories sell.” – Tom SchreiterWho do you call when you need your people to cooperate, innovate, and create? Episode 389 and today's guest is Jeff Taylor, serial entrepreneur and Founder of Monster.com. About a month ago, the combined entity of Monster & CareerBuilder filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It signaled the end of an era and a 31 year run for Monster which is pretty extraordinary. A reflective tribute was added to LinkedIn by Jeff and after reading his post, I immediately reached out, as the story of Monster needed to be told and documented. Thus, I went long form for this interview, a la Joe Rogan style, to bring you the most detailed account of Monster.com from an initial dream to a top 11th or 12th website in the world & a major consumer brand. An initial dream, you might ask… yes… it's true.  Jeff dreamt of the idea, the brand, and the mascot… which received tremendous pushback from multiple parties in the early days. It's this story and so many others that we uncover: * The early building blocks of the internet and how groundbreaking Jeff and Monster.com was in terms of being the 454th dot com and posting the first jobs and resumes on the internet. * The debatable too-early acquisition of Monster in the very early innings of the dot com bubble by TMP Worldwide. * Stories of the hypergrowth years at Monster. * Behind the scenes of the, what was first considered a failure then turned iconic - When I Grow Up - Super Bowl commercial. * And what I found to be the most shocking story… which we lead with - the paper napkin agreement between Jeff Taylor and Reid Hoffman for Monster.com to acquire LinkedIn.  Wow - can you imagine what might have happened if Monster's board didn't turn the deal down? In addition to the deep dive into the legendary story of Monster, we also discuss Jeff's background story, other companies he's built like Eons, and his current company called BoomBand - which is reinventing the resume and building a new AI talent marketplace. The company is still in stealth mode but expects to launch its product late fall. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITEver feel like you're shouting into the void? That's where I find myself after 866 episodes, questioning whether sharing news stories serves any real purpose or just adds to the endless noise. Today I'm sharing a personal milestone decision—I'll be ending this podcast after reaching 1,000 episodes, giving us exactly 134 more days together before I sign off permanently. The stories I covered today perfectly illustrate why I'm wrestling with content creator fatigue. A man lost his life in a horrific MRI accident because he wore a 20-pound chain necklace with a padlock into the exam room during his wife's appointment. Despite previous conversations with technicians about this unusual "workout accessory," the powerful magnet pulled him in with tragic consequences. Meanwhile, New York has awarded over $600 million in taxpayer dollars to sanctuary groups actively working to undermine federal immigration laws. The Bronx Defenders alone received more than $500 million in city contracts since 2018. And in a story that proves money can't buy fidelity, an HR executive married into the Cabot family (worth an estimated $15.4 billion) was caught cheating in a very public scandal—despite only being divorced from her previous marriage in 2022.Amid these troubling headlines, I asked listeners a simple yet profound question: What instantly makes your day better? For me, it's looking at pictures of my grandson when I can't be with him in person. While prayer certainly ranks high, and disconnecting from social media offers mental relief, those family connections provide the most reliable source of joy. Perhaps that's the lesson we need most—in a world overflowing with concerning news, our simplest connections matter most. What brings you instant joy? Share your thoughts and join me for these final 134 episodes as we navigate this noisy world together.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening! We're dipping into the archives for one of our most popular episodes! Andy Lopata revisits his fascinating conversation with Dr. Beam Maue, co-founder of AFWERX, the innovation mission within the US Air Force. How do you build a forward-thinking, agile community within one of the world's most hierarchical organisations? Dr. Brian shares the incredible story of how AFWERX grew from just five people into an award-winning ecosystem that connected with over 700 new small businesses, many of whom had never worked with the government before. This episode is a masterclass in leading change from within. Dr. Brian explains his philosophy of "going to war with the army you've got," empowering the team you have rather than wishing for another. He shares powerful stories, from a pig farmer's innovative soap to navigating Pentagon red tape, illustrating how to manage the environment for innovation, not the innovation itself. Tune in to learn how to foster experimentation, build momentum through short-term wins, and lead with a "faeces umbrella" to protect your team. Key Takeaways Lead the Team You Have: You must work with the people and resources available, not the ones you wish you had. The key is to identify and play to their existing strengths. Manage the Environment, Not the Innovation: A leader's role isn't to direct every innovative step but to create a safe environment where experimentation, learning, and even small-scale failures are encouraged. Empower Your Experts: Trust the experts on your team. Instead of dictating their goals, give them the space to define the strategy and tell you what's needed for success. Stories and Short-Term Wins Build Momentum: Data is forgettable, but stories stick. Highlight short-term wins to prove the value of your mission, build belief, and attract support from sceptical stakeholders. Flow Like Water Around Bureaucracy: When facing bureaucratic obstacles, seek out allies who interpret rules with an "if it's not illegal" mindset. Don't waste energy on pockets of resistance; pivot to where there is less friction. Actionable Insights What can a pig farmer's special soap teach a high-tech military organisation about the true source of innovation? How can you transform a team that's been told “there are no additional personnel” into a globally-ranked best place to work for innovators? What does it mean to be a "faeces umbrella" for your team, and why is it one of a leader's most critical (and unglamorous) roles? Tune in to learn more.   SELECTED LINKS FROM THE EPISODE Connect with Andy Lopata: Website | Instagram | LinkedIn | X/Twitter YouTube Connect with Daniela Landher: LinkedIn The Financial Times Guide to Mentoring Episode 121 Featuring Dr. Beam
