In this episode of Things Police See, host Steve Gould sits down with retired NYPD veteran George Sichler for an unforgettable look into the world of elite law enforcement special operations. Serving 20 years with the nation's largest police force, George transitioned from the intense "meat grinder" patrol blocks of NYC to the high-stakes NYPD Harbor and Scuba teams. George shares incredible firsthand accounts of what it's like to drop from helicopters into pitch-black waters, executive life-or-death maritime rescues miles offshore, and navigate zero-visibility "black water" recovery missions. He also reveals a fascinating look at his post-career opportunities, including his time in Hollywood training Keanu Reeves for John Wick (and the true story behind the famous "Wick flick"). From surviving the chaos of New York City patrol to his current role in emergency preparedness with Mira Safety, George's insights offer masterclass advice on career longevity, the power of professional networking, and never-ending training. Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube Channel returns to the show with two chilling reported encounters from the Alaskan wilderness, each involving a large, aggressive, humanlike creature and witnesses forced to flee under terrifying circumstances. In the first account, Timothy, an aspiring bush pilot, flies from Anchorage to Big Lake in June before continuing by floatplane to a remote pond near a friend's cabin. While hiking a ridge late in the evening — despite the lingering daylight near 11 p.m. — Timothy is overcome by an intense feeling of unease. Moments later, he sees trees violently shaking, hears guttural clicks and eerie cackling sounds, and spots a massive dark figure he estimates to be 13 to 14 feet tall. The encounter escalates when the creature appears to throw the top half of a spruce tree in his direction. Timothy fires his shotgun, then empties his .44 Magnum at what he describes as a crouched, spider-crawling mass. The figure suddenly rises to its full height, lets out a horrifying scream, and Timothy makes a desperate escape back to his floatplane. The second account comes from brothers Derek and James, who describe a frightening 1979 trip along Alaska's Snake River. While traveling through dense fog, they hear a powerful whoop and soon see a dark shape rise up into a massive bipedal form. The encounter intensifies as rocks are thrown and the creature begins making strange, motor-like imitation sounds, forcing the brothers to flee. Family members later refer to the being as a “hairy man.”.Be sure to check out Fred's incredible work on the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube Channel by clicking the link below and exploring more of his videos.Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTubeEmail BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Godwin shares growing up in segregated Jackson, Mississippi, where his idyllic childhood coexisted with racial terror across town, illustrating collective normalization of dysfunction. He discusses confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and how adults construct self-justifying narratives, contrasting Jonathan Rauch's “reality-based community” (evidence, epistemic humility, tolerance for ambiguity) with a “story-based fortress” that discards disconfirming facts and becomes both protection and prison. Using clinical examples like “Katie” and modern cases of relatives drawn into conspiratorial information silos, he emphasizes attachment and identity as drivers of collective deception, argues people are often drawn out by relationships more than information, and concludes that humility is the key skill for better truth-seeking.00:00 Welcome to SuperPsyched00:52 Meet Alan Godwin02:42 Growing Up in Jackson05:43 Stories and Lying07:46 Bias and Normalization10:08 Truth Hurts Then Frees12:37 Reality Based Community14:46 Story Based Fortress18:02 Escaping the Fortress20:14 Katie and Personal Healing22:00 Harry Potter Blindness22:50 Accents and Linguistics23:27 From Self Doubt to Uncle Irving24:42 Collective Deception Online26:48 Environment Reveals the Real You28:57 Information Silos and Gaslighting30:58 Attachment and Identity Needs33:57 Sports Fandom as Microcosm36:14 Crowd Seduction and Nazi Rallies38:32 Truth Needs Trusted Relationships40:32 AI Can't Replace Human Connection41:41 Humility as the Ultimate Skill44:35 Closing Thanks and FarewellHelpful Links:Dr. Alan GodwinDr. Alan Godwin LinkedInTies That Blind: Unraveling Stories That Keep Us in the Dark Book

During this episode, we continue a new addition to Your Best Writing Life with The Story Behind the Stories series. My industry expert, Susan L. Davis, is an award-winning Christian author, speaker, and blogger who loves diving into Scripture and sharing what she's learning. Her debut novel, 63 Hours in Hell, blends biblical mystery with fiction to explore the three days between the cross and the resurrection. She lives in Illinois with her family.Susan - Tell us the story behind 63 Hours in HellBehind My Story  I came to faith later in life—at a funeral in my 40s—during a season of deep grief, family struggles, and searching for purpose. That moment changed everything. Before that, I devoured fiction. After accepting Jesus, I felt nudged to step away from it for a season and dive into nonfiction—Scripture, theology, and the writings of those who had gone before me. It became a time to build a strong biblical foundation and truly understand what I now believed. One question sparked the story that would eventually become my book: when Jesus said, “Today you will be with Me in paradise,” where did they go? Jesus didn't ascend to the Father until three days later. That question wouldn't let me go.Over time, everything I had been studying began shaping a story. I eventually returned to fiction—but I wasn't the same writer. I drew from that foundation to share what I had learned through 63 Hours in Hell in a way that isn't preachy, but invites readers into the story. It took me thirteen years to write this book. Looking back, I believe that's because God was shaping me as a writer just as much as He was shaping the story itself. Three tips for writers.1. Your first draft is a discovery draft. You're uncovering the story as you go—so just get it written. You can't fix a blank page. The real magic happens in the editing, so don't get overly attached to those first words. Stay flexible, because you'll revisit that manuscript again and again—and each pass makes it stronger.2. When you're stuck, step away—but stay engaged with the story. When I hit a wall, I don't force it. I step back—research, read Scripture, pray, take a walk. That's often where clarity comes. The key isn't quitting; it's staying connected to the story in a different way until the next piece falls into place.3. Borrow confidence from writers who are ahead of you.Surround yourself with people who know more than you—join a writing group or plug into an online community. Seeing what's possible and hearing their journey helps light the path for yours. Sometimes their belief in you will carry you when your own confidence is shaky. And if you're able, investing in a writing coach can accelerate your growth. What will the listeners gain from your book?    Listeners will be encouraged to keep going. This story shows that stepping into your calling doesn't mean everything suddenly falls into place—there can be resistance along the way. For anyone pursuing a dream, it's a reminder not to give up when things get hard. Sometimes the struggle is part of the journey, not a sign to stop. Not every closed door means no—sometimes it's an invitation to trust the process, keep moving forward, or be open to a different door. Listener giveaway: A free Booked and Busy guide—a 41-page printable, fillable resource with curated lists of Christian fiction to help listeners discover and track their next great reads. https://drive.google.com/file/d/15Z2niQPEYdf_viBatP9f7TKTRp8D7QqH/view?usp=sharing63 Hours In Hell the book LINKSWebsite: https://www.susanldavis.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SusanLDavisWriter Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susanldavisauthor YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SusanLDavisAuthor555 X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/susanwrites Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/susanlandatodav/Visit  Your Best Writing Life website.Join our Facebook group, Your Best Writing LifeYour host - Linda Goldfarb#1 Podcast in the "Top 50+ Must-Have Tools and Resources for Christian Writers in 2024".Awarded the Spark Media 2022 Most Binge-Worthy PodcastAwarded the Spark Media 2023 Fan Favorites Best Solo Podcast

We are kicking off our Summer at Bethlehem series with a head-first dive into the life-changing power of God's Word. The Bible is not just ancient information; it is living, active, and timely. In this raw and deeply personal message, Pastor Jason opens up about his own years-long battle with anxiety to expose a universal truth: the biggest battle of your life is won and lost in the six-inch real estate between your ears - your MIND.   Preaching from Philippians 4:4-9, a passage written from the depths of a Roman prison rather than an Instagram motivational seminar, Pastor Jason teaches us that a healthy mind requires an intentional spiritual diet. If you have been trapped on an island of worry, playing out worst-case scenarios, this message serves as a practical guide to stop stuffing your emotions and start discipling your mind.

"What are the stories that people can participate in and see themselves in? I think that's one of the keys that we can unlock when it comes to the whole climate narrative is telling stories that build the scaffolding blocks to a larger narrative that people want to be a part of, and we need to make it feel inevitable….The way that justice prevails, whether it's environmental justice or any kind of justice, I think it's that the leaders make it feel inevitable. And that's the climate movement's job. And I think we have every opportunity and ability to do that." Melissa Jun Rowley on Electric Ladies Podcast The movements have been struggling to connect with people to communicate the vital messages about protecting the planet and its inhabitants.  How can the climate and justice movements engage people again? Listen to Melissa Jun Rowleg, author of "Beyond the Mic Drop: How Stories Can Shift Culture, Power & Policy" and communications expert and journalist in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson.   You'll hear about: ●        How stories and narratives work to engage people of all stripes. ●        How emotion is key to connecting with people, helping them see themselves in the story ●        Tips on how to develop and tell stories and tie them into a narrative campaign to drive a positive message for the planet and its inhabitants ●        Plus, career advice, such as:   "You really need to start looking at yourself differently. You're looking at yourself as one thing, but your skills, your assets, your talents, your passion can be so many things to so many other people…Try to look outside yourself a bit.…It's very hard to see ourselves clearly, and I don't know if we ever really do…So, if you're able to, just talk to other people and say…'What do you see in my skillset and in my energy and in what I've accomplished so far and what I could do that maybe I'm not looking at?' Because it is so hard to see ourselves…(and) it's important to celebrate our wins." I recorded this episode the day after one of the most intimate in-person experiences I've ever held, and honestly, the energy was still so alive in me that I just had to sit down and talk about it. We spent three hours together. Women who are deep in the work. Women who show up for their growth every single day. And what came up over and over again were these stories. Not the obvious ones. The sneaky ones. The ones we've been telling ourselves for so long that we stopped noticing them. They just feel like facts now. I watched a woman in that room talk about a goal like it was so far away, almost like it belonged to a different version of her life. And the second I pushed back and said, what if this could actually happen in six months... I watched her whole energy shift. She told me on her way out that for the first time, it felt possible. That moment is everything to me. Because that's what these stories do. They become ceilings. And the thing about ceilings is you don't know you're bumping up against one until someone comes in and points it out. That's what this episode is really about. The stories that are quietly capping your income, blocking your clients, keeping you just far enough from the next level. And why awareness, just being able to see the story, is the most powerful place you can start. Because once you see it, you're no longer inside of it. And that changes everything. I think you're going to feel this one. When you're ready to have someone come in and help you see what you can't see from inside your own business, the Business Alignment Intensive was made for exactly that. It's a private 75-minute session plus one week of coaching to help you get clear, get aligned, and actually move.

This week's episode is a little different. There is no guest joining me behind the microphone tonight. Instead, I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on something I've been thinking about as Sexual Assault Survivor Stories approaches two hundred episodes. Over the past four years, I've had the extraordinary privilege of speaking with survivors, advocates, counselors, researchers, physicians, attorneys, investigators, and educators from around the world. Together, we've explored some of the most difficult realities a human being can endure. Yet when I look back across all those conversations, what remains with me most vividly is not the trauma itself. It's the people. In this short, personal episode, I share some thoughts about resilience, human dignity, and the remarkable capacity people possess to move forward after profound suffering. I also reflect on the countless professionals and advocates who quietly dedicate their lives to helping others heal, and on the listeners who continue to make this community possible. If you've ever wondered what nearly two hundred conversations about trauma, recovery, and hope have taught me, this episode is my attempt to answer that question. An important side note: if you're finding value in this show and these conversations, please consider leaving a 5-star rating on your podcast platform—it truly helps more people find these stories. You can also follow Sexual Assault Survivor Stories on Instagram and send me a note of support. I can't tell you how much your emails mean to me—they fuel my passion to keep this podcast going. And if you're a victim or survivor and you feel like you might be ready to share your story—whether for your own healing or to help someone else—reach out to me. We can start a conversation, with no pressure and no expectations. You can email me directly at dave@sasstories.com. Please include a phone number where I can reach you, because I genuinely prefer to talk with people who are considering guesting. Thank you to everyone who has already reached out—and please keep those emails coming. I truly look forward to hearing from you. Here are some critically important links that I hope you'll take the time to explore. Where a contribution is requested, please consider doing so. In this episode, Pastor Shannon Patterson continues our Soundtracks & Stories series by looking at the classic song Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. Through a personal story of grief and reflection, Shannon explores one of life's most sobering realities: time is a gift we can never get back. Drawing from Psalm 90, Ephesians 5, and 1 John 3, this message challenges us to examine our priorities, embrace the people God has placed in our lives, and choose presence over distraction. Porch Points: Time is your most valuable asset. Delayed priorities can become permanent regrets. Presence is the true currency of love. If you've ever found yourself saying "later" to the things that matter most, this conversation is a powerful reminder that Jesus invites us to live fully present—right now. In the 1880s, Rowan County, Kentucky, became known as “Bloody Rowan” after politics, old grudges and personal revenge led to one of the state's deadliest feuds. This episode traces the Rowan County War from an Election Day shooting in Morehead to three years of ambushes, militia intervention and a final armed showdown that ended the violence, but not through justice. "Kids are always processing what happens around them. Stories give them a way to do that." - Paul McCusker   Summary Today on the podcast we welcome Paul McCusker, an award-winning writer whose stories have shaped the imaginations of families for decades. Many know Paul from Adventures in Odyssey, where he wrote and produced some of the series' most loved episodes. We talk about his newest project, Welcome to Hope Springs, and how great stories combine truth, beauty, and engagement. Paul shares why we should never talk down to kids, especially ages ten to twelve, when their imagination is wide open and they are learning how to see the world. Stories help children live through characters, process hard realities, and even prepare for moments they have not faced yet. This conversation is about why stories matter for kids and families today. Key Takeaways Great stories combine truth, beauty, and engagement. Stories that last are not just entertaining. They communicate deeper truths in a compelling way. We should never talk down to children. Kids, especially ages 10–12, can understand much more than adults often assume. Children at this age are learning how to see and interpret the world around them. Stories help children process real-life events. Kids are always processing what happens around them, even when they do not yet know how. Stories allow children to live vicariously and see how others face challenges and grow. Stories prepare us for future moments. The wisdom in good stories plants seeds that shape future choices and actions. Talking about stories with parents deepens their impact. Conversations help kids understand lessons, character growth, and how to respond in real-life situations.   Couple Discussion Questions What stories do you remember from your childhood?  Maybe it was something you read or something you heard or a movie you watched.  Can you think of a story that helped you see a situation or choice differently in your own life? What was it and why did it stick with you?   Resources https://www.augustineinstitute.org/hopesprings
