Join me on the second segment of my ecotourism trip to Tasmania, Australia (my unscientific, amateur, American, vegan, wombat-obsessed perspective) with all my own audio recordings from my June 2025 trip. This 58-minute (part 2) segment of the trip takes you along with me to my favorite part -- Maria Island National Park and its wombats, kangaroos and wallabies, stingrays, and ruby red anemones, and the culling issue of marsupial "overpopulation" -- through to Port Arthur Historic Convict Site, then on to the city of Hobart, with insights from my Conference on Communication and Environment #COCE2025 (at Univ of Tasmania), including compelling audio clips from Tassie Green Party pioneers who spoke to us -- Bob Brown and Christine Milne. As retired Members of Parliament, and forest/river and gender activists, Christine and Bob have refreshingly candid political advice for activists that also gives listeners insights into current Australian politics. Plus you get to hear their cool Aussie accents (much better than my one attempt early on to do an Aussie accent). "Bad Weather" pronounced "Beed Weeth-uh." (side note: I loved the cool weather there in their winter and the sunny days on the coast). If you like my ecotourist ramblings and low-tech audio, make sure you've listened to Tassie podcast part 1 in the previous podcast posting. And see photos and videos from my trip at https://www.facebook.com/InTunetoNature Idea: You can do a drinking game every time I talk about wombat poop, the ferry, and how adorable any marsupial is. Note: All the animal audio and photos here are of free-living/wild animals (no one was captive in a zoo or sanctuary), which did limit the number of other animal species I interacted with (no Tasmanian Devils or platypuses this time), but I felt it was a more natural and respectful way to interact (it was the animal individual's choice to get near me or allow me nearer to them). And I had an amazing time, and was elated for every wild animal I saw (like fairy wrens or swamp hens at outdoor bistro tables eating my chia pudding cup). As part of me compensating for the greenhouse gas emitted from my international trip, I made some donations to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and the Friends of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. These compact marsupial super predators are famous for their ferocity but through more research we are finding they're actually more social and gentler than we once thought. Also, they're being wiped out by a face tumor disease.
I'm so excited to share my three-week ecotourism trip through Tasmania, Australia. This 50-minute podcast is the first of a multi-part podcast series I created from the audio that I took along my June 2025 trip (and you can pair that with the gorgeous photos I posted on https://www.facebook.com/InTunetoNature ) to get a feel for this extraordinary place, and its animals, like wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, seals, whales, sheep, cows, and birds like cockatoos, forest ravens, magpies, wrens, and kookaburras. Often I'm adding in my own audio commentary and context as an American traveler and animal and environmental advocate, but other times I'm just quietly recording the voices and sounds around me, particularly the other animals there. Across the full series exploring Tasmania (or lutruwita, as the Aborignal Palawa people have called their homeland for 40,000 years), the itinerary I'll take you on is first a quick visit to Melbourne on the front end of the trip (hello city Cockatoo), and then we spend a week traveling through Northern and Eastern Tasmania, starting at beautiful Dove Lake in Cradle Mountain National Park (where I see my first wombats), through the second largest city, Launceston, and the wine and agricultural region, over to the East Coast to the iconic wineglass bay in Freycinet National Park (this is Part 1). And then in future podcasts, I take the ferry to Maria Island (with so many wild animals, including kangaroos) and Port Arthur historic convict site, then South, over to the largest city, Hobart, for a week for my participation in the Conference on Communication and Environment at Univ of Tasmania, and a post-conference on Deep Ecology with esteemed activist John Seed (and we also get to meet two of their biggest environmental activists who started the Green Party in Australia, Christine Milne and Bob Brown). Then before flying out of Melbourne, on the mainland of Australia, I share my tour of the Great Ocean Road where I got to see my first wild koalas up in the eucalyptus trees, and a kookaburra, black and white magpies, and kangaroos at their gorgeous national parks. Note: all the animal audio and photos here are of wild/free-living animals (no one was captive in a zoo or sanctuary), which did limit the number of other animal species I interacted with (no Tasmanian Devils or platypuses this time), but I felt it was a more natural and respectful way to interact (it was the animal individual's choice to get near me or allow me nearer to them). And I had an amazing time, and was elated for every wild animal I saw (even wrens or swamp hens at outdoor bistro tables), plus I enjoyed the human Aussies I met as well. Love their accents! As part of my compensation for the resources used and greenhouse gas emitted from my international trip, I made some donations to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and the Friends of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Washington, D.C. is the home of the American government and every square inch of it oozes history. Shockingly, we haven't covered many haunted locations in the Capitol City, despite its extensive history. So it was definitely time to investigate what else is haunted in this city and we found a neighborhood with multiple ghost stories. Foggy Bottom dates back to the mid-1700s, but it would take nearly 100 years before people would settle here and these were mostly laborers. There were two grand homes here, one of which still stands and both reputedly were haunted. And there are a couple of legends connected to the area as well. Join us for the history and hauntings of Foggy Bottom. The Moment in Oddity features Tasmanian Devil births and This Month in History features the birth of P.T. Barnum. Environmental communication scholar Dr. Hanna Morris shared her insights from "Apocalyptic Authoritarianism: Climate Crisis, Media, and Power," her 2025 book with Oxford Univ Press. This book meets the political moment in analyzing the way most mainstream news media actually lean moderate to right in climate coverage that "others" and villianizes the New Left activists and progressive politicians as too 'radical' or 'woke' (like A.O.C. and often other women of color or those proposing the Green New Deal) in favor of older American narratives of "order" and quick solutions via white male authorities and American exceptionalism, rather than exploring democratic coalitions of many Americans who are proposing deeper climate justice and equity initiatives and new sustainable ways of living (going beyond simplified technological global warming fixes preferred by authorities). But Morris has ideas for how more robust climate journalism --that challenges privileged authority figures, respects the wisdom of the public, and acknowledges the violences of the climate crisis -- could foster the kinds of democratic and holistic/deep responses the climate crisis warrants. We discuss current issues that the journalism profession is facing in this digital era and trump regime. Dr. Morris and I begin this 50-minute In Tune to Nature podcast by chatting about our upcoming trips to Tasmania for the Conference on Communication and the Environment #COCE2025 as members of the International Environmental Communication Association that we volunteer for. I end the podcast with audio of an Australian (Tasmanian) animal species (nonhuman) and ask you to identify the species and email me your guess. This week Brian and Harrison kick things off by chatting about Brian's recent arm surgery and how little care and sympathy he's been receiving from his nearest and dearest. The surgery reignited his love of anesthetics and having a nurse to hail at any moment. They also discuss a few footy topics and have a round of 'CHAT-BT'. Joining them on the mic this week is Derek Hine. Derek is one of the most highly respected recruiters in the AFL, contributing to Collingwood Football Club's impressive list for the past 21 years, culminating in two premierships and several grand final appearances. He is now at the helm of the Tasmanian Devils where he hopes to do the same
This week, we devise a plan to save the Tasmanian Devils (the team, not the animal) or, at the very least, find Rum'un a new job. We also dig around to find some highlights in what was quite a boring round of football, from Jack Ginnivan's antics and secret meetings to missed kicks and high hits.Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Bluesky @falconfootypod

This month, we're heading down under to talk about an animal that has been seriously misunderstood thanks to cartoons and pop culture. It's only found on one island in the world and there's so much more to it than its wild reputation suggests. Alex sits down with Dean Reid, Operations Manager at Aussie Ark, to clear up the myths and share why this creature is so important. So join us as we travel to Australia to talk about Tasmanian devils. For sources and more information, please visit our website.

Kid, Gdub, and Wally kick things off by picturing themselves as cartoon characters - Imagine Kid as the Tasmanian Devil on a bender, Gdub as a lazy Garfield but with more booze, and Wally, well, he's just Bugs Bunny with a worse attitude. Then we took a sharp turn into the world of transgender army veterans, because who doesn't love a story where someone swaps one set of camo for another? Next up, some Canadian lovebirds thought they could join the Mile High Club without joining the 'Mile High Arrest' Club. Shows what a little cabin fever and too much altitude can do to your judgment. And speaking of bad decisions, some dumbass golfer thought he could skip out on a strip club tab without repercussions. Spoiler: he couldn't. His ass got kicked quicker than he could say "fore!" or "I'll pay you next week, I swear!" We then had a good laugh at the expense of women who can't twirl or show off their nails without making a spectacle of themselves. Kid then dropped a truth bomb about bowling alley sluts - they're just barflies who got grounded by their own offspring. Apparently, once you've pushed a few kids out of your baby cannon, the bar scene is out, and the bowling alley is in. But we're not all about the mockery; we also celebrate beauty. Bringing back the "Hotties of the Week" segment, we've got Bonnie Rotten, the queen of ink and kink, and Lucy Mecklenburgh, who's apparently traded reality TV for a more... interesting reality. Original Release Date: January 29, 2015 On Mic: Kid, GDub, Wally

When there is nothing AFL to report during the off-season this is what we can talk about! Hayden Young signed a monster contract extension which is currently the longest contract in the AFL today! The AFL have finally left the great game alone for 2025 with only a few minor rule changes, but they've forgotten to tidy up a couple key important grey areas with Holding the ball and dangerous sling tackle which is frustrating fans every single game. Chris Fagan, 2024 premiership coach was rewarded with a 2 year contract extension at the Brisbane Lions. Does this take him out of the equation to be the first ever coach of the Tasmanian Devils? Shout-out Joe Fortune who is our major sponsor! #joefortune

Once you find purpose, and once you find style… what's left? Beauty. What's left is finding and putting out beauty into the world. There are not many writers who have genuinely figured this out … but one of them is Mitch Albom. Mitch is the author of 'Tuesdays with Morrie,' the bestselling memoir of all time, as well as 'The Five People You Meet in Heaven' and his latest bestseller 'The Little Liar' which came out in 2023 and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. His books have sold over 40 million copies. Mitch just doesn't turn off. He's like a Tasmanian Devil. He's hosting a radio show, he's on TV, he's writing columns in the Detroit Free Press, he's a musician, he's even running an orphanage in Haiti. Mitch is full of energy and life and moves quickly and talks quickly … and so we talked about that. We go deep into why he moves through life so fast. We unpack his relationship with Morrie and talk about how I actually misinterpreted parts of the book. We talk about what the worst thing you can say to an artist is (which he learned from Maya Angelou) and what the true enemy of getting things done is (and surprise, it's not time or energy). Fly down to Detroit with me and let's take the elevator way, way up the 96-year-old Fisher Building. Let's enjoy the wise Mitch Albom sharing his 3 most formative books with us in this classic chapter. Let's flip the page to Chapter 15 now...

Side note before we get started: does anyone else remember Cadbury's "Taz"s? The chocolate bar? The one that was kind of like a Freddo but had caramel inside? What ever HAPPENED to those? In any case, Tasmanian Devils are definitely one of those creatures that the general public knows little about, other than through the portrayal of a beloved yet crazed cartoon lunatic. Could you even DRAW a Tasmanian Devil if I asked you to? Probably not, right? Here to talk about these wild and wonderful beings is Brian Ahearn, nature-lover and artist, and creator of Zoo Draws, the comic strip that combines comedy and nature (sound familiar?). Listen to Alice and Brian talk about what makes Tazzie Devils special, including their facial tumours, carnivorous babies, and how they've recently made a comeback to Australia after a whopping 3000 years! Our charities of the week are the INCREDIBLE Aussie Ark and Re:Wild - both setting extraordinary examples of how to be excellent humans and save the planet. If you want to find out more about what they're doing to help Tazzie Devils and generally making the world a better place, check out www.aussieark.org.au and rewild.org!

A couple of devils from Australia are making themselves right at home in Auckland Zoo after relocating from a wild life facility in Tasmania. The young sisters, who are waiting on their Palawa Kani aboriginal names, are here to raise awareness about the plight of endangered Tasmanian Devils, the world's largest carnivorous marsupials. Since the mid 90's they've been under attack from a nasty infectious disease. Auckland Zoo's lead carnivore keeper, Nick Parashchak told Lisa Owen the two sisters are finding their feet in their new home.

Plus, data from smaller businesses shows that 30% of white-collar workers took sick days last year, a 42% increase from 2019. And it's Gen Z that seems to be leading the charge – to not tough-it-out. Sick leave among workers under age 35 rose more than other age brackets. Experts attribute this post-pandemic rise in calling out to several factors, including Gen Z's willingness (and need) to take mental health days.According to a new survey, 48% of us believe that Siri – or Alexa deserve to be spoken to politely. In the poll, it was found that younger generations are more likely to extend common courtesies to their digital assistants: Over half of Gen Z (56%) said that politeness is their default style when interacting with AI. And 29% of those who describe themselves as “polite” when speaking with AI went even further, feeling that “everyone deserves to be treated with manners, whether human or not.” And 39% of respondents said that they feel our past behavior when speaking with our robotic helpers might affect how they respond to us in the future.1990S POP CULTURE FACTS YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED TO KNOW:☞ ‘Tickle Me Elmo' was almost named ‘Tickle Me Taz' — as in the ‘Tasmanian Devil' from Looney Tunes.☞ The Spice Girls didn't come up with their nicknames. A magazine editor and staff thought of the names as part of a feature they were running on the group.☞ Sony originally developed PlayStation as a CD-ROM add-on to Super Nintendo. It was actually called “Play Station” (2 words) and had a port for SNES cartridge games and a CD-ROM drive for Sony games.☞ Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis paid for 2 Forrest Gump scenes out of their own pockets, one of which is the one where ‘Forrest' runs across the US. Paramount refused to increase the film's budget, so the pair agreed to pay for the scenes in return for a larger percentage of the film's box office.☞ The original Polly Pockets were tiny because Chris Wiggs, who created the toy for his daughter, used a makeup powder compact to create a portable dollhouse.☞ ‘Timon' and ‘Pumbaa' were originally the ones who were supposed to sing ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight' in “The Lion King”. But when Elton John found out about it, he killed the idea, saying, “I don't want a big, stinky warthog singing my love song!”☞ George Lucas returned to directing for “The Phantom Menace”, his first time in that role since the original “Star Wars” film. But he was hesitant to do so, and only agreed after first asking Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, and Ron Howard to direct. They all said “no”.☞ Thanks to...

You've been entertained by Jim Cummings at some point over the last forty years whether you know it or not: he is the voice of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, the Tasmanian Devil, and countless other cartoon characters. And like his hero Mel Blanc, he is not merely “doing” voices—he's acting and singing his heart out. Leonard and Jessie are especially fond of his vocalizing as Ray the Cajun firefly, who croons “Ma Belle Angeline” in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. It was a pleasure meeting and chatting with someone we've both admired for years.
Think of an infectious disease. What comes to mind? A viral infection like influenza? Or a bacterial illness like cholera? Maybe some of you thought of a fungal pathogen or a parasite. But how many of you thought of a cancer? In this episode, we explore the bizarre, stranger than fiction story of devil facial tumor disease (DFTD), a transmissible cancer that has devastated Tasmanian devil populations over the past few decades. And when we say transmissible cancer, we don't mean a cancer caused by a virus - we mean the cancer itself is transmissible. How is that possible? What does it do to the devils? What are Tasmanian devils like? What role do they play in the ecosystem? What does the future hold for these adorable creatures? Tune in for a lively discussion all about these devils and their disease, featuring Dr. Rodrigo Hamede, Senior Lecturer at the University of Tasmania and DFTD expert. This episode will have you looking up pictures of baby devils, listening to their wide range of sounds, and rethinking the lines between contagious and non-contagious disease. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to cover two animals that a lot of people have suggested. Carson and Mia both want to learn about the Tasmanian tiger, and Eli and Pranav both want to hear about the Tasmanian devil. We talked about the Tasmanian tiger, AKA the thylacine, in episode 1, and I thought we'd had a Tasmanian devil episode too but it turns out I was thinking of a March 2019 Patreon bonus episode. So it's definitely time to learn about both! The thylacine was a nocturnal marsupial native to New Guinea, mainland Australia, and the Australian island of Tasmania, and the last known individual died in captivity in 1936. But thylacine sightings have continued ever since it was declared extinct. It was a shy, nervous animal that didn't do well in captivity, so if the animal survives in remote areas of Tasmania, it's obviously keeping a low profile. The thylacine was yellowish-brown with black stripes on the back half of its body and down its tail. It was the size of a big dog, some two feet high at the shoulder, or 61 cm, and over six feet long if you included the long tail, or 1.8 meters. It had a doglike head with rounded ears and could open its long jaws extremely wide. Some accounts say that it would sometimes hop instead of run when it needed to move faster, but this seems to be a myth. It was also a quiet animal, rarely making noise except while hunting, when it would give frequent double yips. A 2017 study discovered that the thylacine population split into two around 25,000 years ago, with the two groups living in eastern and western Australia. Around 4,000 years ago, climate change caused more and longer droughts in eastern Australia and the thylacine population there went extinct. By 3,000 years ago, all the mainland thylacines had gone extinct, leaving just the Tasmanian population. The Tasmanian thylacines underwent a population crash around the same time that the mainland Australia populations went extinct—but the Tasmanian population had recovered and was actually increasing when Europeans showed up and started shooting them. Because the thylacine went extinct so recently and scientists have access to preserved specimens less than a hundred years old, and since the thylacine's former habitat is still in place, it's a good candidate for de-extinction. As a result, it's been the subject of many genetic studies recently, to learn as much about it as possible. It'll probably be quite a while before we have the technology to successfully clone a thylacine, but in the meantime people in Australia keep claiming to see thylacines in the wild. Maybe they really aren't extinct. The Tasmanian devil is related to the thylacine. It's about the size of a small to average dog, maybe a bulldog, which it resembles in some ways. It's compact and muscular with a broad head, relatively short snout, and a big mouth with prominent lower fangs. It's not related to canids at all, of course, and if you just glanced at a Tasmanian devil, your first thought wouldn't be “dog” or “thylacine,” it would probably be “giant mouse.” The Tasmanian devil is black or grayish-brown, usually with patches of white on the chest and rump. It also has rounded pinkish ears, long whiskers, paws with relatively long toes, and a long tail. Since the devil stores fat in its tail, a fat-tailed devil is a happy, healthy devil.
