In Episode 75, Ashley Audrain (author of The Push) joined me to talk about society’s expectations of mothers, how her publishing background influenced an early draft of The Push, and what it’s like to read and write dark stores. This post contains affiliate links (plus: here’s your Amazon Smile-specific affiliate link), through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Generational differences in how society views motherhood and interesting feedback Ashley has gotten from mothers in her parents’ generation. What the overwhelming response to The Push has been like for Ashley and whether she expected this type of reaction from readers. How (and when) she found out The Push was going to be a GMA Book Club pick. How Ashley’s publishing marketing / PR background during The Girl on the Train‘s heyday influenced an early draft of The Push, which she eventually changed. How Ashley felt about writing such a dark book about a revered topic. What Sarah gets out of reading dark books. Some interesting feedback from men that Ashley has heard about The Push. Harmful phrases that are thrown around about motherhood all the time and how they can impact mothers’ mental health. Ashley’s thought process as she was writing Violet’s character. Ashley’s memories of reading We Need to Talk About Kevin. How / why Ashley decided to go with a slightly ambiguous ending (and her revision journey to get there). Serious question: Are you being healthy or are you depriving yourself? Most people get these two confused, or they think they are the same thing. But the truth is, the two are not synonymous. If you do feel deprived when trying to be “healthy”,then sis, I have some news to break to you: You’re doing it wrong. There is absolutely no reason to feel deprived when nourishing your body with what it needs. So for those of you who may think you’re being “healthy”, I want to chat about a 9 signs that you’re in fact, under-nourishing yourself. If this episode empowered you, be sure to check out Episode 18: What Happens When You Don't Eat Enough. In this episode, I break down why overly restricting your calories is not an effective or healthy way to create lasting weight loss. I dive into why you should never live in a caloric deficit, how it’s damaging your metabolism, as well as the entire functioning of your body, and signs you aren’t eating enough calories. If you are under-nourishing yourself, I highly recommend learning about reverse dieting in Episode 46: Why You Should Consider a Reverse Diet (The Only Diet I Support!) to help you start nourishing your body correctly without gaining weight. Plus, be sure to check out Episode 16: 3 Things Your Food Cravings Are Trying to Tell You.
In this episode I get to know the award-winning beauty, health and lifestyle journalist Ingeborg Van Lotringen. Ingeborg, who was Cosmpolitan UK's Beauty Director for 14 years, is loved for her no BS journalism. She's an inquisitive writer who isn't afraid to ask difficult questions and tell things as they are. No-where is this more obvious than in her brilliant book ‘Great skin – Secrets The Beauty Industry Doesn’t Tell You’ which was recommended to me by Sherna Malone. The minute I read it, I knew I had to interview Ingeborg. She was a woman after my own heart. In this episode we talk about the good and bad things about the beauty industry, brands and products that Ingeborg loves, why PHAs are great for our skin and why brands need to be more transparent about products. We also discuss natural and synthetic beauty and why both can go hand in hand.I loved chatting to Ingeborg...she's a well informed journalist with unquestionable integrity and she's not afraid to ask hard questions to fight the consumer's cause.

Today I’m talking all about why diets fail and why they will never work as a sustainable solution for women with PCOS that are looking to have long-term results. Even though diets don’t work, so many of us go on them. It may also seem appealing for women with PCOS. If you missed out on my last episode EP 64: What Your Doctor Didn't Tell You, I talked about how doctors mislead you to thinking you need to go on a diet. So many women have grown with this idea that they need to go back to a diet because they feel there’s nothing else for them to do. But the truth is, there is a better option. There are people who may argue that diets do work. But the fact is if the diet was as successful they believe it is, then why did they go on it multiple times? Diets are nothing but a cheap bandaid solution. But they have gained so much popularity and there is yet to be many more to come. So if you're wondering, why don’t diets work? The answer is that they don’t show you healthy eating behaviors. Diets often restrict you from certain types of foods. But restrictions are not healthy and can lead to unhealthy eating disorders. One main problem is that once you stop the diets you gain everything back. Many women think it’s their fault but the real reason is that it didn’t teach you how to eat healthily. Instead, they taught you to restrict food and not find peace with food. Diets are created to feed into fear. Diets are created for you to go back to them so that you can be a frequent customer. So if you don’t know what to do. I encourage you to stop looking for a short-term solution to a lifetime problem. Diets will not give you the tools you need to learn to manage your PCOS from the inside out. Very simply, diets are not tailored for women with PCOS because they don’t take under account critical keys that are unique to your body such as your metabolic condition, or your hormones. Diets are created to cut back on calories which is why people tend to lose weight but when you have PCOS you have other things to take into account which make diets unsustainable. I want you to know that you can find a balance, and not live in the extremes of any diet. If you don’t know how to get started I want you to join the waitlist for my program Reset Your PCOS. Reset Your PCOS is a 10-week program where we work together and focus on balancing hormones, creating delicious meals, and help you gain momentum in making sustainable lifestyle changes. Please donate to our podcast. Every dollar helps: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8uXWKqnLTI American Life is the ninth studio album by American singer and songwriter Madonna. It was released on April 21, 2003, by Maverick Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album, produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, features references to many parts of American culture. The album is a concept album, with themes of the American Dream and materialism. These themes reject the reputation Madonna held in the 1980s, earned by songs such as her worldwide hit "Material Girl" (1985). The album is a folk and folktronica album; as well, it is influenced by acoustic music.American Life initially received mixed reviews; critics found the record confusing and "about Madonna". The album peaked at number one in fourteen countries. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and British Phonographic Industry (BPI) both certified it platinum in recognition of one million shipments in the United States, and 300,000 shipments in the United Kingdom, respectively. The album became the 32nd-best-selling album of 2003 and has sold five million copies to date. American Life garnered two nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004.Four singles were released from the album. The title track was released as the album's lead single to a generally negative critical reception, with Blender naming it the ninth worst song of all time. It charted at number 37 in the US while it entered the top ten in most countries, peaking at number two in the United Kingdom. A controversial music video was pulled after scenes of war and violence were criticized which led to an edited version being released. Its following single, "Hollywood", became her first single not to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1983. "Nothing Fails" and "Love Profusion", the third and fourth singles respectively, featured a lack of promotion resulting in poor commercial performances. Despite this, all singles peaked at number one on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart.Madonna promoted the album during a small promotional tour in April and May 2003. At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, she performed alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott a medley of "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood" and engaged in open-mouth kissing with Aguilera and Spears gaining great controversy and publicity. American Life was supported by Madonna's sixth concert tour, the Re-Invention World Tour, which was the highest grossing tour of 2004 earning $125 million. The tour was chronicled in the documentary I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, which led to Madonna's first live album of the same name.
Fungus Among Us: Diagnosing And Treating Yeast Problem | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Athletic GreensYeast overgrowth, including but not limited to candida, is quite common and can be triggered by a number of things. These include a high-sugar diet; impaired immunity; use of drugs, like antibiotics, birth control pills, estrogen, and steroids; and psychological stress. The symptoms of yeast overgrowth vary from person to person and some people may require aggressive treatment, while others many need only simple changes to make a significant difference in their health. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the functional medicine approach to diagnosing and treating yeast imbalance. They also share specific cases in which they have treated patients for candida and other fungal problems.George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Email us at hello@christywright.com to let us know what you think of the show. We all have feelings. And I have a lot of them. In fact, I have so many feelings, my feelings have feelings. Today, we’re going to talk about—yep, you guessed it—feelings and the appropriate (and important) role they have in our lives. Chip Dodd, bestselling author of The Voice of the Heart and other brilliant books, joins us to talk about feelings, vulnerability and the responsibility we all have to own them. Then, we’ll pull out our journals as we process our emotions and feelings. How to Understand Your Feelings Whenever we face an issue or problem, it’s easy to try to fix the issue at the surface level. But what’s interesting is that often times, what’s on the surface of the issue isn’t even the problem itself. No matter what the problem is, there’s always a root. But you have to be willing to uncover it layer by layer by layer. And if you can get to that deeper layer—if you link it to the root of what's really going on—you can solve it. It’s there that you can find healing, deeper communication, intimacy and connection. The question you need to be asking yourself and others is simple: Why? And then keep repeating it until you get to the root. You’ll sound a little like a broken record, but you know what? It works. Keep asking why. It's going to bring you to the core of what's going on inside you. It's an effective coaching technique, but it also helps you become self-aware and build closer relationships with every single person around you. What Most People Don’t Realize About Their Feelings with Chip Dodd Chip Dodd, author of the amazing book The Voice of the Heart, is here with me today to talk about the import role of feelings in our lives. Chip and I talk about: The feelings God has given to us to live fully between the areas of grief and celebration How to be emotionally vulnerable and develop emotional resilience How we can use our feelings as tools to take ownership of our hearts and lives Learning to trust your feelings through identification, exploration and expression What Emotions Are You Feeling Right Now? “Jesus wept.” — John 11:35 (NIV) I don't know about you, but to me, it’s so moving to consider that Jesus had feelings. Jesus wasn't an emotional iceberg. He had feelings, highs and lows, emotions and pulls. Just before that verse, it says Jesus “was deeply moved in spirit and troubled” (John 11:33, NIV). And then He wept. I want share that with you today as an encouragement that you're not alone. So, I've got some journal questions for you as you process your own emotions and feelings right where you are. How does it feel to consider that Jesus had emotions and feelings just like you? What emotions are you feeling right now? Why do you feel that way? And after you write down that answer, ask again—why? I want you to continue asking yourself why until you get to the deepest root layer of what’s really going on inside.

Today on Boston Public Radio: We started off by talking with listeners about your impressions from Tuesday night’s presidential debate. Rep. Seth Moulton offered his impressions of Tuesday night’s debate, discussed the newly-published report from Congress' Future of Defense Task Force on shortcomings with U.S. national defense, and reflected on his initiative to establish a national three-digit suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline. CNN analyst Juliette Kayyem weighed in on Tuesday’s debate, looming challenges in distributing an eventual COVID-19 vaccine, and deeper national security risks revealed in the New York Times report on President Trump's tax returns. Medical ethicist Art Caplan discussed whether doctors should have political conversations with their patients, as well as what he described as “reckless” development of coronavirus vaccines in China, and a rise in U.S. parents who say they won't have their kids get a flu shot this fall. Chasten Buttigieg, husband of former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, gave his take on Tuesday’s chaotic presidential debate, and spoke in depth about his newly published memoir, “I Have Something to Tell You." Boston Globe travel writer Christopher Muther discussed Maine’s lift on restrictions for travelers coming from Mass., interstate traveler animosity, and his experience sharing a hotel with quarantined college students. Closing out the show, we returned to listeners to talk about Tuesday's presidential debate.

That research “construct[ed] publicly available statistics on parents’ incomes and students’ earnings outcomes for each college in the US using de-identified data from tax records…. reveal[ing] that the degree of parental income segregation across colleges is very high, similar to that across neighborhoods.” Their work also shows that some schools (such as the State University of New York at Stony Brook) succeed in helping students who grew up poor gain upward mobility.Today’s student quote is from Ha-Joon Chang's, 23 Things They Don't Tell You about Capitalism.Resources:Professor Friedman’s bio.Dan Shaviro’s blog post about Friedman’s visit to the NYU Law Tax Policy and Public Finance Colloquium. The paper Friedman presented at the Colloquium, "Income Segregation and Intergenerational Mobility Across Colleges in the United States".The EITC article discussed in the episode, "Using Differences in Knowledge Across Neighborhood to Uncover the Impacts of the EITC on Earnings".The Pencil Question article is Darien Shanske, "Revitalizing Local Political Economy through Modernizing the Property Tax", 68 Tax L. Karla McLaren, M.Ed. is an award-winning author, social science researcher, and empathy pioneer. She is the author of The Language of Emotions: What Your Feelings are Trying to Tell You (2010), The Art of Empathy (2013), and the multi-media online course Emotional Flow: Becoming Fluent in the Language of Emotions (2012). Her most recent book is Embracing Anxiety: How to Access the Genius of this Vital Emotion (June 2020). Karla’s lifelong work focuses on her theory of emotions, which revalues even the most “negative” emotions and opens new pathways into self-awareness, effective communication, and healthy empathy. She is the founder and CEO of Emotion Dynamics LLC and the developer of the Empathy Academy online learning site. Her applied work, Dynamic Emotional Integration® (also known as DEI) is a trailblazing approach to emotions and empathy that reveals the genius and the healing power within the emotional realm. Karla has also developed the groundbreaking Six Essential Aspects of Empathy model that highlights all of the processes in healthy empathy and makes them easily understandable, accessible, and attainable. This model teaches people how to access, develop, and manage their empathy intentionally. It also explicitly welcomes people who have been exiled from earlier models of empathy (such as men, boys, and autistic people). Karla is also the coauthor (with cult expert Dr. Janja Lalich) of Escaping Utopia: Growing Up in a Cult, Getting Out, and Starting Over (Routledge, 2017), which focuses on Dr. Lalich’s groundbreaking study of seventy people who were born in or grew up in forty different cults spanning twelve countries. With Dr. Lalich, Karla also co-authored a research study on the multiple stigmatizations that GLBTQ people experience in fundamentalist religions (Inside and Outcast: Multifaceted Stigma and Redemption in the Lives of Gay and Lesbian Jehovah’s Witnesses). Karla also served as a researcher and editor on Dr. Lalich's Take Back Your Life: Recovering from Cults and Abusive Relationships. Karla is in production on a book about emotions in the workplace, The Power of Emotions at Work (Sounds True, 2021), and an illustrated children’s book: Emotions! The Smart Kid’s Field Guide to the Wonderful World of Feelings. Prior to 2003, Karla authored numerous books and audio learning sets. She then made a change in her career and left her metaphysical, paranormal approach behind. After a seven-year sabbatical that included extensive research and a degree in the social sciences, she resumed her public career in 2010, with a message to followers of her earlier work. Her work is now focused on teaching empathic mindfulness skills that help people interpret the messages and gifts inside their emotions so that they can increase their empathy and emotional awareness. While the particulars of her work have changed considerably, the essence is in essence what it was then: She wants all of us to live as intelligently, as compassionately, and as deeply as we can. Join us in conversation with this researcher and pioneer!

Super Madonna Fans Review CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR.Confessions on a Dance Floor is the tenth studio album by American singer and songwriter Madonna. It was released on November 15, 2005, by Warner Bros. Records. A complete departure from her previous studio album American Life (2003), the album includes influences of 1970s and 1980s disco, as well as modern-day club music. Initially, she began working with Mirwais Ahmadzaï for the album but later felt that their collaboration was not going in the direction she desired. Madonna took her collaboration with Stuart Price who was overviewing her documentary I'm Going to Tell You a Secret. The album was mainly recorded at Price's home-studio where Madonna spent most of her time during the recordings.

I'm Philip Holden and this is Ideas in Writing - the podcast where we talk to people who use words - written, spoken, performed and even (once again) sung. The guest brings along a word and so do I...it's all downhill from there on...In this episode I talk to the brilliant Arthur Smith who has been at the top of the tree of comedy for many many years and is often cited by other comedians as a hero. Arthur is one of the few performers who can genuinely claim to be a national treasure having become a fixture on Radio 4 on shows like Loose Ends and the One Show for BBC TV. He is also practically the headline act of every Edinburgh Fringe and frequently persuades visitors in summer that Arthur's Seat is named after him.Above all Arthur is a wordsmith (dammit, why didn't I say THAT during the podcast?) and apart from obviously writing his own material (and giving comedy masterclasses) he writes movingly about his upbringing, his parents, his love of walking, friendship and just getting on with life. Many of his pieces are collected in his new book 100 Things I Meant to Tell You.Arthur and I talked about his love of walking which started as a boy hiking around the Lakes and along the Pennine Way. We talk about nearly killing his audience, his worst gig and how he's managing to get through lock down without performing and without his beloved Edinburgh Festival.Arthur's word for this episode should have been Pagoda whilst mine was Play but for reasons I explain...kind of...we didn't even mention them. Nevertheless, it was a lovely chat with a lovely bloke. You can order Arthur's books from Mr Books Bookshop here and you can find out about Arthur's gigs (when they do eventually happen) and his Patreon page at his website, here.Ideas in Writing is produced with the support of Mr Books Bookshop in Tonbridge - the home of inspiring, imaginative and intelligent books, gifts and conversation.
