If you're thinking about how to maximize your GivingTuesday and year-end fundraising efforts, you'll want to join me for this in-depth consulting call with Lindsay Melander, the executive director of Seed India. In her role, Lindsay takes on the monumental task of communicating the hardships of families living in the slums of Kolkata, India, to the average Westerner. With stories as compelling as hers, there's SO much she can unpack and share with the world to further cement donor relationships. This episode is chock full of techniques for connecting with new donors and building trust with existing ones, from using personalized thank you emails and video asks, testing video view and retargeting ad campaigns (for as little as $5 per day!), and creating tentpole content. We move on to discuss Lindsay's strategies for maximizing end-of-year fundraising efforts and segmenting different asks for various donor groups. For example, she could ask recurring donors to increase their gift, or their 800+ social media followers to share their story. There's also potential to collaborate with other brands that align with their values.I love hosting these consulting style calls and hope you'll take away some nuggets of inspiration in this conversation with Lindsay!Resources & LinksLearn more about Seed India on their website and check out their Night of Joy Dinner and Virtual Reality Experience. Annie Sargent and Patricia Perry review the virtual reality experience that they saw at La Défense in Paris. This experience is not recommended for kids under 11, probably because of the size of the backpack and 3D goggles. It will soon come to more central Paris at the Conciergerie and on the parvis de Notre Dame. The Eternal Notre Dame Virtual Reality Experience The Eternal Notre Dame is virtual reality experience developed by Orange and Emissive in association with the Mayor of Paris and the Church. They had also done the VR for the DaVinci Experience at the Louvre which was a sit-down VR experience. Eternal Notre Dame is a walk around VR experience where you are outfitted with a backpack which holds the computer and high-end VR goggles. This is a completely immersive experience where you are exploring Notre Dame throughout the ages and you are moving around. You can see other participants as ghosts so you don't bump into them. It's totally safe but your brain is tricked into thinking that you're going to the top of Notre Dame on an elevator, that you can lean over a non-existing banister, that you need to take steps over obstacles. That is disconcerting but it works. Episode Announcements The Join Us in France YouTube channel is BACK! I don't know why the account got banned or why they gave it back. YouTube is fickle. "MSM will allow users to interface with an alternate world of the imagination where capitalism is working fine for everyone, constant military expansionism is normal and desirable, Washington's enemies are all bloodthirsty monsters, and billionaires are just harmless job creators. Let's check it out." Reading by Tim Foley.

Back when Sam was part of Civil FX (now a division of Parametrix), he and his team started working on a totally different kind of project than the ones they were already used to — which they mentioned in episode #4 of this podcast. This project was the Simulator for Active Distracted Driver (SADD), in which they aimed at “using fortnight to save lives”. Today's show is an update on the status of this project, and the challenges the COVID pandemic posed to its iteration. Essentially, SADD can be described as a simulator that teaches the public in general the dangers of distracted driving. However, since one of the most common causes of car accidents reported to be related to distracted driving is cell phone usage, this virtual reality tool can be said to focus on teaching younger drivers the consequences of their distracted actions. While there are many examples of virtual reality being used to spread the word about this problem, the goal with SADD is to create something that is active and that people could “play with”, really visualizing themselves in the high-risk situation. Listen to the episode to find out how the simulator works, the problems Sam and his team faced when trying to get the simulator out and test it with people due to COVID-related restrictions, and what the future of it may look like, given that Vision is making progress towards a 2021 launch.  The simulator is already available on Sidequest for free. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.24.353722v1?rss=1 Authors: Hofmann, S. M., Klotzsche, F., Mariola, A., Nikulin, V. V., Villringer, A., Gaebler, M. Abstract: Immersive virtual reality (VR) enables naturalistic neuroscientific studies while maintaining experimental control, but dynamic and interactive stimuli pose methodological challenges. We here probed the link between emotional arousal, a fundamental property of affective experience, and parieto-occipital alpha power under naturalistic stimulation: 37 young healthy adults completed an immersive VR experience, which included rollercoaster rides, while their EEG was recorded. They then continuously rated their subjective emotional arousal while viewing a replay of their experience. The association between emotional arousal and parieto-occipital alpha power was tested and confirmed by (1) decomposing the continu- ous EEG signal while maximizing the comodulation between alpha power and arousal ratings and by (2) decoding periods of high and low arousal with discriminative common spatial pat- terns and a Long Short-Term Memory recurrent neural network. We successfully combine EEG and a naturalistic immersive VR experience to extend previous findings on the neurophysiology of emotional arousal towards real-world neuroscience. Earlier this year, the CEO said that Tesla is going to soon push two-factor authentication after an ’embarrassing delay,’. A few months later, Tesla has now officially released its two-factor authentication feature to owners."   User Haggy online explains more: "Once you set it up, both the app and web access will need the code. But you can also add a second device. If you have multiple drivers or devices, when it asks for the code, it will ask you which of your devices you want to get the code from. That's good, but if you have more than two drivers, then you will need to set up MFA for each one with a different email address. I tried that for my wife, and was able to authorize that email address for each car, but I couldn't find a way to do it for the Powerwall. So I set it back to my email address, which is now safer to share since there's MFA. It's also a PITA the way they implemented it, because many sites require the code but let you register the computer, and then don't prompt you again for a period of time if you elect that. Tesla doesn't seem to allow that."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/06/tesla-launches-two-factor-authentication-protect-customers/   TESLA MODEL S PLAID WILL USE 4680 BATTERY CELLS WITH STRUCTURAL PACK "During Battery Day, Tesla unveiled a completely new structural battery pack consisting of new 4680 lithium-ion tabless cells. It also unveiled the new Model S Plaid, which the company's CEO Elon Musk has been talking about for a long time. And now we know that the new Model S Plaid will feature the all-new structural battery pack." says Tesmanian: "520+ miles range, 1100 horsepower, acceleration from 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds, and top speed of 200 mph. The new type of 4680 lithium-ion cells will have five times more energy, 16% more range, and six times more power. In addition, the cells will be packaged in a new way within the car. Transcripts:Living in an ecological microcosm virtual reality experienced by Amber Bartosh. The closed worlds VR experience positions you as a user within a virtual diagram of two ecological houses built in the 1970s in London and Sydney. Both houses were built as laboratories and living experiments. They were occupied by their architects as part of the experiment. Virtual reality initiates an experience through different sounds and perspectives to convey the conversion of waste to energy. Your involvement evolves as you move, following the flow of energy and materials inside the ecological microcosms there are two choices in the virtual reality headsets. The ecological House and the Sydney autonomous house the ecological House/ Graham Caine London 1972. One of the earliest ecological houses the ecological house or street farm house was built in Eltham, south London in 1972, as a laboratory and living experiment by Graham Kane, a member of the anarchist group. Street Farmers, originally formed by Peter Crump and Bruce Hackett. The ecological house was a fully functional integrated system that converted human waste to methane for cooking as well as maintained a hydroponic greenhouse with radishes, tomatoes even bananas. Caine, then a 26 year old fourth year student at the Architectural Association of London, designed and built the ecological house on borrowed land from Thames Polytechnic, as part of his diploma thesis at the AA. He received a provisional two year permit from the borough of Woolwich district survey with the promise to build an inhabitable housing laboratory that would grow vegetables out of household influence and fertilise the land with reprocessed organic waste. After having lived in the house for two years with his family, Caine was asked to destroy it. In 1975 throughout the construction process Caine used himself and his family as a guinea pig in order to test the function of several components of the house. He experimented with his waste, his cooking habits, his use of water, monitoring closely every activity of daily practice until the day the house was demolished. Caine was undoubtedly the steward of the house. He alone knew how to feed the house with the right nutrients how to chop wood grow plants supply the engines and water the greenhouse. The architect, therefore was an indispensable biological part of the house he built and portrayed himself as a combustion engine for generating electricity connected to the house in a diagram where excretion becomes a vital constituent of the system's sustenance in many respects, the house was more grown than constructed. It needed care from its caretaker and without human presence, it's living by a technical systems would degenerate and die describing his house as a life support system, Caine satirically argued that the architect now being involved with the House's biological cycles may now relate to his own shit. Research by Lilia Kilipoliti. The Sydney autonomous House Sydney 1974-1978 In the mid 1970s architecture students at the University of Sydney gave Australia its first autonomous house. Their ambitions were grounded in broad environmental and social concerns but more specifically responded to a global energy anxiety emerging from the 1973 oil crisis. Encouraged by. The charismatic and politically engaged lecturer Colin Chole James, around twenty excited students used scavenged and recycled materials to build a structure on campus that could test the integration of various technologies for domestic self-sufficiency. The project included a wind driven generator for power and the students own designs for a beer bottle Trombe-Michele greenhouse wall, flat plate solar hot water heater and methane digester. While the students embarked on a DIY showcase for closed systems ecological design, they ended up with much more. A dozen people or more turned the structure into a home and continued to expand and tinker with it, installing a sleeping loft, growing a permaculture garden raising goats building a Coolgardie safe. All the while monitoring and reflecting on the experience. Exploring models for more ecologically attuned design and dwelling became as important as any technical testing. In the end, what was meant to be a one year student led design build exercise spilled over into a four year public experiment in sustainable living that gained coverage in national and international press. The house was host to a series of utopian energy fairs where children ran amongst the rabbit hutches, goat pen and the organic vegetable garden. It featured in television programs magazine articles and was visited by thousands of people. A mail order path that distributed the students on reflections on their strange experiment which they'd come to call the 'celluloid house' due to its media profile. The intermittent power supply, overheating greenhouse and malfunctioning methane digester had offered some hard lessons to offset the effusive interest. The students faltering, sometimes naive attempts to build a functioning autonomous house, grew into a sustained everyday engagement with an assortment of issues from environmental pollution and resource depletion to consumerism and centralized industrialisation. The redesign of the domestic realm, offered particular possibilities at a time when the personal was becoming articulated as political. The Sydney Autonomous House, became a site with a students private actions and budding professional practices could align with planetary needs. The emerging ecological consciousness of the 1970s manifested through building. Still the experiment was barely tolerated by much of the faculty. University administration detested the ramshackle eyesore in their backyard. It was bulldozed in late 1978. Research by Leigh Stickles.

Research: Virtual Reality Experience Boosts Confidence and Cognitive Skills

Virtual reality (VR) experience can enhance cognitive performance and self-esteem, a new study found. Researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain gathered 30 young male participants for an experiment on “virtual embodiment”—the illusion of having a different body than one's own. The participants were asked to wear a body-tracking suit and a VR headset. Half of them embodied legendary scientist Albert Einstein, while the other half personified an average adult body. Before the experiment, the researchers asked the participants to take tests that measured their self-esteem and cognitive capacity, or their ability to plan and to solve problems. After the experiment, the participants took the tests again. Based on the findings, those who had low self-esteem performed better during the second cognitive test after personifying Einstein than those who embodied an average adult body. The researchers suspect that the results were brought about by how people with low self-esteem have the most motivation to change their perception of themselves. By seeing themselves as an intelligent and a renowned scientist, it is possible that their confidence increased while taking the test. This, in turn, led to better performance in the cognitive test. Another study showed how VR experience can boost cognitive performance. Researchers from the University of Maryland found that people retain information better when immersing in VR environments, as opposed to using computers or tablets. The participants also claimed that they were able to concentrate more within the VR environment. According to a senior research scientist, there is a possibility that immersing in a VR environment can boost recall and learning by improving one's orientation and mobility skills.

This week The ChickPeeps take a more serious turn as we investigate the issue with dairy and exactly why vegans don't consume it. Many non-vegans argue that taking its milk doesn't hurt cows and that in fact milking actually relieves the cow. We explore the reasons why this is a myth, and discuss the results of quitting dairy products entirely. We also interview two of the founders of Animal Equality, and creators of the groundbreaking iAnimal project, Jose Valle and Sharon Nunez, who recount in vivid detail the experiences they've had on dairy farms and the typical life of a dairy cow. Also on this episode... Is there more suffering in a glass of milk? 'You're not lactose intolerant, you're just not a baby cow.' The gifts/health benefits cows give you when you stop eating their secretions. Evy expresses her frustration with evolution to provide cows with adequate weaponry - why no fanged cows yet? Momo suggests carving holes in animals is probably not to their liking. Why do people think calcium is synonymous with dairy milk?  The Chickpeeps discuss their favourite dairy substitutes. Is dairy a feminist issue? How Animal Equality was founded. Jose shares how the iAnimal project was conceived. Tylor: 'These Animals are children who are then forced to have children who are then taken away just so we can drink their milk.' Is there an ethical way to consume dairy? The future for dairy farms. The Superlative Light made a splash at deadCenter 2016 as one of the Okie Shorts and the Virtual Reality Experience. The short recounts the story of homeless photographer Robert Shults as he climbs out of poverty thanks to a job taking pictures of a giant lazer in the basement of the University of Texas's physics department. The documentary plays with the ideas of the relativity of time and the importance of perception in storytelling. Caleb and Alex both had the opportunity to watch the short via two completely different viewing experiences. Caleb caught the movie as a part of The Okie Shorts while Alex caught the Virtual Reality experience at the deadCenter HQ in the IAO building. The film piqued an interest in both of your hosts and and both chime in with their thoughts on the film with Alexandra bringing you a full interview with the film's director Ben Steinbauer.

Tool creates cool digital experiences for big companies all over the world (including UX work for online giants like Google and Facebook), and when they created a virtual reality experience of South Park - they couldn't have imagined how fast it would catch on.    After tremendous coverage on sites like TechCrunch and WIRED (and many lessons learned), Matt speaks to us about how to create a unique virtual reality experience that people will enjoy as not just novel, but fun and worth revisiting again and again. Max is project head at Birdly, one of virtual reality's most curious projects. Birdly is a full-body kind of “table” that one lays upon while wearing an Oculus VR headset - and through a combination of arm control (to replicate wings) and fan (to replicate the speed of air in one's face) - reproduces the experience of flying like a giant hawk. In this episode, I ask Max about the components of a truly “immersive” VR experience, and about his predictions about the coming decade in VR technology.
