245 - The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Transparent Should Owners be With Their Employees? With Rowan Tree Counseling Team

Conversations with a Wounded Healer

I totally started this podcast on a whim––but not without a keen understanding of the pain points that group practice owners routinely encounter complain about. I've since realized that vital voices are missing from the conversation: group practice employees.  I extended an invitation via the BOPO Chicago Facebook group. Lucky for us, Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC, and Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC, owner and senior therapist, respectively, of Rowan Tree Counseling, answered that call. This convo is juicy, y'all!  We explore themes of responsibility, transparency, and intentionality from both sides of the group practice relationship. Our detour into the thorny subject of hierarchies and the urgency that often accompanies their abolishment is one that I didn't anticipate yet totally appreciate.  GUEST BIO Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has been working in the mental health field since 2008. She completed graduate training and received a Masters Degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Andie began her career working in residential and community mental health settings, gaining experience working with individuals seeking relief from anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. She's also worked extensively with clients recovering from traumatic experiences. She specializes in working with individuals seeking a greater sense of balance, who want to live a more values-aligned life, and those struggling with non-monogamous and other alternative relationships. Andie is anti-racist, Queer-allied, sex-positive, polyamory-affirming, and kink-knowledgable. Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor and completed graduate training in Clinical Psychology at Roosevelt University in 2019. She has experience working with teens and adults experiencing severe anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders in partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient settings. Nadia has also worked with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and those healing from traumatic experiences. Her approach to therapy is integrative as she pulls from both more directive approaches (CBT, DBT) and client-centered guidance and support to treat anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, trauma, relationship concerns, and self-esteem issues. Nadia is also well-versed in ERP and has found it particularly successful in supporting individuals struggling with OCD. She is a native Russian speaker and can provide therapy in Russian and English. Celebrate our Anne-iversary and Win! We are celebrating Anne Remy's one-year anniversary as co-host of the show. Jenny and Annie bring another daring Fireside Folklore episode exploring folklore relating to the noble rowan tree. Jenny kicks off with an intriguing tale of a witch who lives in the woods. The wicked witch is particularly fond of her precious dishes but has minimal desire to clean them herself. This story reveals how the Rowan Tree gained its powers of protection, transforming from a withered, sick tree to a mighty guardian of the forest. Annie brings us back to Loch Ness with the tale of a particularly pesky kelpie who tries to debate his way out of certain death. Whether you're a fan of folklore, interested in Scottish culture, or just love a good story, this episode of Stories of Scotland is a great jaunt into environmental mythology. Could July 26th be the day that you get to return to an inside table in restaurants and pubs across County Clare? Hospitality industry representatives met with senior government officials yesterday afternoon in a bid to find a pathway back to the return of indoor dining. The Government is looking to pass new legislation in the next week on allowing only vaccinated people to eat inside restaurants. The Cabinet will consider six reopening options when it meets on Tuesday, after talks were held with hospitality representatives yesterday. The proposals include a system that allows only vaccinated people and those recovered from Covid indoors, a system which has been operating successfully in many other EU countries But how will these new proposals work in practice? On Friday's Morning Focus Alan Morrisey spoke to Brian O' Neill MD of the Rowan Tree in Ennis and Patrick O'Donoghue, one of the owners of Monks Restaurant, The Pier, Ballyvaughan.

I told my graphic designer, Miranda Nelson, that the St Patrick’s Day show would be the 500th episode of the podcast. She thought about it and came back and asked, “would you mind if I collected some audio feedback from some of the artists on the show.” I said,” sure! That sounds great!” I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much of a response. But I remembered that she suggested this when I started compiling this 500th episode. She forwarded me some feedback via email. I looked through them and didn’t see any audio. “Oh well,” I thought. “Less than I expected, but that’s fine.” Then I noticed one band mentioned something about including audio in their email. But I never got that. So I emailed and asked Miranda where that audio was. Her response, “it’s in the folder you set up on Google Drive.” Oh yeah! I did do that, didn’t I? I opened up the folder and was floored to find over 60 recordings by Celtic bands wishing me a  happy 500th episode. Wow! Ye know a couple pieces are easy to pop into an episode. But I didn’t think about how to include ALL OF THESE pieces? So what should I do for this show? Instead of me introducing bands and songs, I’m gonna let the artists do it themselves. I will play their congratulations as a way of introducing their music. Course that means if you want to find out the name of the song or tune, you will need to visit the shownotes at CelticMusicPodcast.com or just check your podcatcher. Because each track has a time stamp so you can easily look it up. That said, I’ll have a few moments to break up the music and say hi. But for the most part this is just music and congratulations. I want to thank Miranda Nelson Designs for all of her hard work in making this happen. Miranda has a whole bunch of Celtic shirt designs you should check out at mirandanelsondesigns.com. And I want to thank everyone who has supported this podcast over the past 16 years. And without further adieu, let’s meet the bands. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is a for-profit endeavor that is funded by you. I cannot pay royalties to artists because of the nature of podcast. It’s cost-prohibitive. You can read about that on my website. So I found a different way to give back. A portion of the money raised from compilation CD sales and from your Patreon donations is donated to Celtic Non-Profits. We already donated money to the Savannah Irish Festival to help some of the artists featured on this podcast. We are also sponsoring the Texas Scottish Festival in May. And now in September, we’re also sponsoring Middle Tennessee Highland Games & Celtic Festival. We have donated over $35,000 to Celtic Non-Profits. But I want to stress, that’s not me. That’s all of us. Everyone who supports this podcast is supporting Celtic culture through music. These festivals bring our musical heritage alive. So thank you for being a part of that. CELTIC PODCAST NEWS While you’re there, I want to ask you to post a review on Apple Podcasts. Right now, we are 37 reviews away from 1000. That’s incredible to think about especially considering I haven’t asked anyone to post a review in a long time. If you listen to podcasts, I want to recommend a couple that I enjoy and are Celtic in nature. Irish Music Stories is put out by Irish musician Shannon Heaton. She looks at the bigger stories behind traditional Irish music. It’s extremely well-produced and well worth subscribing Erin’s Isle is a short travel podcast. Erin brings you the delightful parts of Ireland in intriguing stories that’ll make you want to learn more. Her show is even syndicated on Aer Lingus and British Airways. It’s that good. And a lot of fun! If you want more St Patrick’s Day music, check out the St Patrick’s Day podcast. It’s a 7-part series I released years ago. It’s music with minimal chatting. It’s perfect for playing in the background of your own Paddy’s Day party. I’d be negligent if I didn’t tell you about my own personal podcast. The Pub Songs Podcast is the virtual public house for Celtic Geek culture. I put together several St Patrick’s Day episodes including the latest which is a Sci Fi St Patrick’s Day. Because, well, I’m a geek. You can find more podcasts by me and others in my Mage Podcast Network or when you subscribe to the Celtic Music Magazine. I searched music and found your podcast - my first!  I love Celtic music having green blood in my veins and am a Ceili dancer who enjoys our Irish culture and community here in St. Paul MN.   As I listen to this great music, I am digging out of a very cluttered home office. The upbeat music is keeping me going as I tackle this rather daunting task.  No pics - nobody should see the mess I have!" Helen Withers emailed: "Hi from Helen Withers in Falcon, Colorado. We attended the Larkspur, Colorado Renaissance Festival in the last two years. We have repeatedly sat in the audience to see, sing with(from the audience) and enjoy a musical trio called "Music the Gathering Band" They have at least one CD, & recently finished at the Brevard RenFaire. You may like them for one of your podcasts." She sent another email: "Also, there's a band from one of the Carolina states, called Syr. We saw them live in Estes Park, Colorado & really enjoyed their music too. Thank you, Helen Withers in Falcon Colorado."

I just found the podcast this week and I am really enjoying it! I’ve been diving into Celtic music after Ancestry.com helped me track my heritage back to Scotland in the 1700s. The Southwest Virginia region was a popular place for Scots-Irish to settle because it reminded them of home. In fact my home town is named “Dublin”. Thanks!" Tom Cochran emailed a photo: "Hi Mark, Listening to show #442 while printing invitations to our upcoming Burns Night Dinner. We have hosted this in our community for 15 years now and it has grown from 10 people in our living room to 50 or so in a local hall. We invite friends, some whom are musicians or actors to participate by reciting Robert Burns poetry or singing songs. Some sing other Scottish or Irish songs or present their own songs poetry. It’s also a pot luck with lot’s of great food ( I provide the haggis.) and drink. There’s dancing and laughing and a wonderful sense of community. I know Burns Nights come in various forms from very serious to very silly but I recommend that everyone should experience one. They usually happen around his birthday, January 25 and they happen around the world so you can usually find one nearby. On a different topic, you read a letter on the show by a lady who attended a Highland Games. She was asking what the event was where the hay stuffed bag was thrown with the pitch fork. It’s called the Sheath Toss. Thanks again for all you do to promote Celtic culture."

Second, you had every right to defend your friend/guest host from inappropriate and mean-spirited comments. Also, as someone who has listened to the podcast since sometime during its first year of existence, I think it should be pretty obvious by now that listening to all aspects of Irish and Celtic music and exploring all aspects of the culture has always been what this podcast is about. It seems to me that if you were to bow to the desires and wishes of these internet trolls, you would be going against the very well-established tenets that your podcast has always been based on. This isn't whatever it is these trolls are trying to turn it into. In fact, the only people who are trying to politicize your podcast appear to be those trolls themselves, as far as I can tell. I will continue to listen to and support the podcast for as long as it goes on, and I want to thank you for all that you do to make it such a great podcast."   #celticmusic #irishmusic #irishcelticmusic

I'm a long time listener and have always found a way to hear the podcast over many platforms. Anyways, thank you so much for the work you put into one of my favorite podcasts. I usually listen while working but tonight I am listening at home while crocheting an entry for the upcoming county fair. This will eventually be a farm themed toy mat. I'll have to send pictures of the finished stuff when that happens!" Ryan MacNeil emailed: "Hey Mark, Just wanted to thank you for including my music in your podcasts. I don't get to listen all the time but I enjoy your shows. Hope you are having a great summer!" Carol Baril commented on Patreon: "Love these podcasts! The music is so much fun to listen to while I'm at work banging on my keyboard! I think I'm falling for those tunes with bagpipes!!! Especially bagpipes and drums!!! Thanks for all your hard work Marc getting these out for us fans!" James Spradlin emailed: "I was sad to hear that some do not support the heritage of the strong celtic woman. Our women have kept us alive for centuries. And it can truly be said that without them there would be no Celts. It makes me fighting mad to think that Anyone would disrespect OUR women. Keep up the good fight, Mark. We support you and your support of the women of Celtic music."

It is also your votes in the Celtic Top 20.  Every year, I ask you to vote for your favorite artists in each episode. At the end, I compile your votes into the Celtic Top 20. These are your favorite songs and tunes of 2018. This is not in any particular order. But these were the twenty most-popular songs and artists of the year.  Now if you enjoy any of these artists, please remember to support them. Buy their music and merch. Buy tickets to shows. Follow them on Patreon or Spotify or send them a few bucks. Let's get on with the music. I was talking with a lot of my musician friends recently. Across the board CD sales are diminishing. Yet, many artists make their living playing music. We knew this was coming but most musicians haven't found out how to adjust. So it comes down you to support the music and arts you love. In show #349, I listed a bunch of Celtic musicians on Patreon. Some of you who are Patrons of this Podcast already know how easy and awesome it is. If you know of any other artists there, please let me know. I'd like to update that list for 2019. Or if there is a special way you support Celtic music, email me.  I am updating the Top Irish & Celtic Music Playlist on Spotify over the couple weeks. This past year, I was hoping to update it every week or every month. But time prevented from doing that. So I came up with an alternative.  I'm gonna add ALL of the available songs from the Celtic Top 20 since it started to this playlist. This will be a massive list of over 200 tracks. Please follow a link in the shownotes to follow the playlist.  The playlist has 240 followers right now. Which is fantastic. But I want it to grow. I want something that will make money for these amazing artists who so generously support the podcast. If you're in a Celtic band and want your music heard on this podcast, go to 4celts.com and submit your music.  If you know a Celtic band that you think should be on the show, please talk to them. Tell them about our and our amazing community. My goal is to help independent Celtic bands be heard. You can make that happen. Finally, I am updating how you vote in the the Celtic Top 20 for 2019. I looked through what was played and unplayed, noticed my listening has been sporadic at best, and decided I would start at the very beginning and go up until the most recent podcast. Well, a week and half ago, I got caught up. I've been listening to your podcast while cooking dinner, while cleaning my apartment, while driving to and from work. I also have it on when I've traveled up north and back, proving the podcast makes a great travel companion. You name it, you and the music has been in the background. Along the way, I've Favorited the Christmas music podcasts which has further proved the best way to listen to Christmas music is to have it played on Celtic instruments. But the biggest story I want to share involves your Celtic Music Workout specials. I started listening to the first one when, completely by chance, when I went to the gym and worked the elliptical. It was a trip! The podcast got my heart rate up and kept me motivated to keep on going. I shared those two podcasts with my friend Roxanne, my nephew and niece-in-law - all of whom are long distance runners. I also shared them with the managers of the gym that I go to. They got a bang out of listening to them and liked how the music kept the momentum up throughout the podcast. So, if you are ever inspired to create any new Celtic Music Workout podcasts, please do so. They are appreciated! Keep up the great work on the podcast. It's greatly appreciated...well, at least by me. Slainte!"

There is such a great variety of music, and a great selection of artists. Being a 17-year-old visually impaired musician that plays a lot of Trad Irish music, it's wonderful to see a podcast that is dedicated to Celtic music! With that being said, I shall continue to be a listener, and this podcast shall continue to help me with schoolwork!"

Robert Fuller, Ph.D. is a physicist and former president of Oberlin College. He has consulted with Indira Gandhi, met with Jimmy Carter regarding the President's Commission on World Hunger, and worked to defuse the Cold War in Russia when it was known as the USSR. As Fuller reflected on his career he realized that he had been, at different times in his life, a somebody and a nobody. His periodic sojourns into “Nobodyland” led him to identify rankism - the abuse of the power inherent in rank - and ultimately to write the book Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank. He has become a recognized leader of the dignity movement to overcome rankism and keynoted a Dignity for All conference hosted by the President of Bangladesh. His many other accomplishments include co-authoring the text book Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics. His books include: Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank (New Society Publishers 2003), Dignity for All: How to Create a World without Rankism (co-author Pamela A. Gerloff) (Berrett-Koehler Publishers 2008), Religion and Science: A Beautiful Friendship? Nadine Dyer and her two kids are living a big, juicy homeschool life above a rowan tree in Ontario, Canada. On her blog, Up Above the Rowan Tree, she talks all about her journey as a homeschooler, especially her experience using the Secular Charlotte Mason method.   “There are moments of joy that definitely outweigh the difficulty, but I was completely unprepared for how hard it was. I don’t feel that enough people mention that part.”   When Nadine first started homeschooling, she wishes she knew how difficult it would be – and how rewarding those hard days would be when her children overcome an obstacle. When we see our homeschooling communities on social media, we are often looking at the bright red berry moments in a dark winter. We sometimes forget that, behind those bright moments, there are days, weeks or even months of challenges.   “One of the scariest things that I’ve done as a homeschooler is saying I need to back off. That didn’t feel intuitive to me. That didn’t feel natural to me. It made me feel like somehow I was neglectful if I didn’t just keep pushing and prodding.”   We also forget that children can offer us a lot of insight into their experience, if we’re willing to act on what they say and not just talk them out of it. Nadine has tackled her biggest home education challenges by giving herself permission to slow down, offering her kids the control and trusting in that process. One of the things I love to advocate when we talk about the Brave Writer lifestyle is imagining what would nourish a sense of commitment to education. Is it freedom, is it one-on-one time, is it eye contact, is it a treat, is it feeling like this space is intended for a specific purpose? Too often we’re juggling 12 balls at once and we want our kids to exclude all the distractions or just get it done so we can move on with our day, and we don’t consider what it is that we’re asking them to do. We don’t set the context. To add context to a difficult subject, Nadine really embraced Teatime. It became something that she wasn’t forcing because there were no worksheets or quizzes. It was just sitting, enjoying, reading and talking together. It became such a positive connection for her kids that she started putting down tea and snacks right before their math lessons.     “[Teatime] became this thing that they connected with calmness and safety and there was not a lot of pressure. Anytime I need them to do something difficult or challenging I make a pot of tea or a pot of hot chocolate and we will do whatever it is that’s hard, while we sip tea, because everything's better when you’re sipping on tea.”   Nadine was first introduced to Charlotte Mason while reading The Writer’s Jungle. She saw pushback to the Charlotte Mason ideology, but those ideas were also what worked for her kids and brought peace to her home. It works for her family and, ultimately, the goal of homeschooling is for a tailor-made education directed by a real human being. Nadine has a wonderful blog and Instagram account. Follow her to learn more about how she is using the Charlotte Mason methodology to craft a unique homeschool experience for her family and how the Brave Writer lifestyle has helped her overcome family challenges.   You can download show notes for the podcast here: http://blog.bravewriter.com/category/podcasts/   Resources: You can download Free Writing Lessons here: http://go.bravewriter.com/free-writing-lessons Nadine Dyer: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Pinterest | Twitter | YouTube The Writer’s Jungle
