Bouncer Smith is one of the true legends of South Florida fishing — a charter captain, author, conservationist, and storyteller with over six decades on the water. A federal grand jury in the Southern District of Florida has indicted Anna Kepner's sixteen-year-old stepbrother as an adult on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated abuse in connection with the eighteen-year-old's death aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship. The indictment, announced April 13, marks the first public disclosure of formal charges in a case that had been sealed since the stepbrother was initially charged as a juvenile on February 2.The legal framework for this prosecution is notable. Because Anna Kepner's death occurred in international waters aboard a vessel returning to Miami, the FBI holds investigative jurisdiction and the case falls under federal criminal statutes. The transfer from juvenile to adult prosecution required judicial approval — a determination that the court found the severity and circumstances of the alleged offenses warranted adult proceedings. The case is assigned to Judge Beth Bloom in the Southern District of Florida.The charging instrument carries particular significance. First-degree murder under federal law requires proof that the killing was intentional and premeditated. Aggravated abuse is a separate offense alleging the stepbrother assaulted Kepner. This dual-charge structure contradicts early reporting that indicated no evidence of assault beyond the mechanical asphyxia listed as the cause of death.The evidentiary record described in public filings and reporting includes security camera footage showing the stepbrother as the sole individual entering and exiting the stateroom, earwitness testimony from Kepner's younger brother describing violent sounds from inside the room, testimony from an ex-boyfriend alleging prior concerning behavior observed via FaceTime, and text messages from the stepbrother's mother indicating the defendant repeatedly claimed an inability to remember the events. The stepbrother's medication history — ADHD and insomnia prescriptions, with two consecutive missed doses of insomnia medication — and potential alcohol involvement may become relevant to defense strategy. Now a federal grand jury has laid out what it believes happened behind that door.Timothy Hudson — Anna Kepner's 16-year-old stepbrother — has been indicted as an adult on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse in her death aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship.Anna was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon on November 7, 2025, during what was supposed to be a family vacation. Her body was discovered under the bed in her stateroom — wrapped in a blanket, hidden beneath life vests. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide by mechanical asphyxiation, consistent with a bar hold across the neck. Bruising was found on her neck.The indictment, announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, alleges Hudson violently assaulted and intentionally killed the 18-year-old while the Carnival Horizon traveled through international waters en route to Miami. Ship security cameras reportedly showed he was the only person seen entering and exiting the stateroom that night.Hudson was initially charged as a juvenile in February 2026, with the case sealed. On April 10, a federal magistrate judge ordered the case transferred to adult court. The indictment was publicly announced days later. If convicted, Hudson faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison.What makes this case so difficult to process isn't just the violence alleged in the indictment. It's the fact that people around Anna Kepner reportedly saw warning signs. Her aunt said Anna was afraid of her stepbrother. Her ex-boyfriend alleged disturbing behavior during a FaceTime call. Anna herself reportedly didn't want to go on the trip. And yet the adults closest to the household described the family dynamic as close, loving, and harmonious.Anna's father, Christopher Kepner, has called for Hudson's arrest. (8:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: I know, I know, lots of stuff just happened: Orban topples in Hungary, Vance beclowns himself there and in talks with Iran, Trump basically ends the ceasefire and threatens war against EVERY country in the world if they send a ship through the strait of Hormuz, the Houthis are trying to blockade the OTHER shipping bottle-neck there, Trump caught staring at cleavage at the cage fighting in Miami, Swalwell self-defenestrating. But I'll stick to this: The Melania Trump speech about Epstein was the single most important public statement by anybody connected to Trump in the last decade. She, personally, out of nowhere, moved the Epstein story back to center stage. A month of world-shaking cataclysm by her husband to bury the Epstein story and HIS COVER-UP OF IT and in 535 words she undid all that. And the thing that will keep this story alive for months: NONE of her words were in defense of her husband. She never said WE are innocent. She said I am innocent. She said it TWENTY FOUR TIMES. Her speech could’ve been only FIVE words long. Five words that may end the Trump presidency: I’M not taking the fall. PLUS: No, Swalwell isn't the victim and the allegations aren't anonymous and this isn't a Roger Stone set-up. He just knew there was a story, the way in 2017 I knew there was a story that would end up getting Matt Lauer fired from NBC and I knew it six days before Lauer knew it. Today's Headlines: Everything JD Vance touched this weekend turned to dust. Viktor Orban — MAGA's model autocrat and Putin's most reliable EU ally — was swept out of power in Hungary's election, with opposition leader Peter Magyar's Tisza party winning 135 of 199 parliamentary seats. Vance had flown to Budapest days earlier to campaign for Orban. Then Vance's Iran peace talks in Pakistan collapsed without a deal, and he left. Within hours Trump was threatening to blockade the Strait of Hormuz and bomb Iran's water treatment facilities, while Marco Rubio watched UFC with Trump and Joe Rogan in Miami. Iran said "if you fight, we fight." Meanwhile, the economy is quietly getting ugly. GDP growth in Q4 2025 came in at a 0.5% annualized rate. Inflation jumped to 3.3% in March — the highest in two years, up from 2.4% in February — driven largely by gas prices. Pawn shops across the country are reporting a surge in loan demand and customers selling valuables outright, with both major publicly traded pawn operators trading at five-year highs. The White House ballroom, meanwhile, will be built with $37 million in foreign steel donated by a Luxembourg company — right as Trump cuts their tariff rates in half. Trump has allegedly promised mass pardons to anyone who came "within 200 feet of the Oval." The White House called it a joke. In other news, A former Army employee was arrested and indicted for leaking accounts of sexual harassment and gender discrimination at Fort Bragg to a journalist — Kash Patel celebrated her arrest on Twitter as a warning to "would-be leakers." Anthropic is releasing its powerful new Mythos model — which can find security vulnerabilities human developers can't — to a coalition of 40 companies anyway. The FTC is suing three states for trying to regulate prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket using anti-gambling laws. And finally, Eric Swalwell dropped out of California's governor's race after CNN and the SF Chronicle reported misconduct allegations from four women, including two incidents of sexual assault. His staff quit, 45 former staffers signed a letter calling for his resignation, and the Manhattan DA opened an investigation.
