When temptations come, arm yourself with this thought: When my Lord suffered and died to free me from sin, I died to sin!

Words are powerful. Though small and easily spoken, they can carry immense weight—capable of bringing comfort or causing deep wounds. Scripture compares the tongue to a fire, something that can quickly grow out of control and cause lasting damage. In James 3, we are reminded that even a small spark can set an entire forest ablaze. In the same way, a single careless or angry word can leave scars that linger far longer than we expect. Many of us know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of those words—to be hurt, discouraged, or deeply wounded by something spoken in anger. And if we’re honest, we also know what it’s like to be the one who spoke too quickly. Anger itself is not the problem—but unrestrained anger often leads to words we cannot take back. In those moments, our natural response may be to fight fire with fire—to return hurt for hurt. But Scripture calls us to a different way. Jesus modeled this perfectly. Even when He was insulted and mistreated, He did not respond with harsh words. Instead, He chose restraint, grace, and trust in the Father. His example shows us that strength is not found in reacting quickly, but in responding wisely. When we are hurt by others, forgiveness can feel incredibly difficult. Yet holding onto anger only continues the cycle of pain. God invites us to release that burden, to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to allow His Spirit to guide our responses. Likewise, when we are tempted to speak in anger, we can ask God to help us pause—to listen more than we speak, and to choose words that build up rather than tear down. The same mouth that can wound also has the power to heal. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, our words can become instruments of encouragement, truth, and grace. Amina had come to Christ in a country where Christianity was illegal. She began to share her new faith with her brother, who rejected her appeals. Then he contracted a dangerous lung condition. Alone in a dark hospital room, he gasped for breath. He wasn’t ready to acknowledge Jesus as God’s Son, and he feared speaking the name of Christ aloud. (Someone might hear him!) So he called out, “God of my sister, please help me now!” Suddenly, he could breathe easily, and the room brightened inexplicably. His journey to belief in Jesus began that day. In Genesis, Abraham’s servant went on a quest to find a wife for his master’s son. First, he prayed to the “God of my master Abraham” (24:12). Why? The servant knew God had told Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation” (12:2). God repeated that promise (15:2-5), and “Abram believed the Lord, and [God] credited it to him as righteousness” (v. 6). The servant could trust “the God of my master Abraham” (24:26, 42) because he’d witnessed the reality of Abraham’s faith. With our words, we invite others to follow Jesus. More important, however, is the way we live before them. The reality of genuine faith in the one true God speaks volumes. May the God of Abraham and of Amina use our lives to draw others to Him.

Many believers carry a quiet burden—the longing to see loved ones come to know Jesus. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or coworker, we recognize their need for hope, peace, and truth. Yet even with that desire, we can feel unsure, hesitant, or even inadequate when it comes to sharing our faith. We often think boldness means having the courage to say all the right words at the right time. We imagine bold faith as something loud, visible, and fearless. And when we don’t feel that way, we may begin to believe we’re falling short. But biblical boldness is not always about volume—it’s about faithfulness. In Philippians 1:27, Paul encourages believers to live in a way that is “worthy of the gospel of Christ.” This kind of boldness is seen not only in what we say, but in how we live. It shows up in our choices, our attitudes, and our responses to others. Boldness can look like extending kindness when others choose criticism. It can look like offering prayer when someone is hurting, even if it feels uncomfortable. It can look like choosing integrity in situations where compromise would be easier. These everyday actions reflect the heart of Christ and quietly point others toward Him. Sharing the gospel is important, and we should continue to pray for opportunities and courage to speak truth clearly. But we should not underestimate the power of a life that consistently reflects Jesus. Love, peace, humility, and grace are testimonies that others can see and experience firsthand. God uses both our words and our actions to reach others. When we take even small steps of obedience, He works through them in ways we may not immediately see. If you feel hesitant or unsure, you are not alone. Ask God for boldness—not just to speak, but to live in a way that reflects His love. Trust that He is already at work in the lives of the people around you, and that He can use your faithfulness to draw them closer to Him. Brother Matthew was a worldly teenager when his mother decided she and her son needed to go to church. By the end of that first service, both of them had committed their lives to following Christ. As Matthew grew in faith, he was convicted and inspired by the Acts accounts of Paul's missionary travels. Studying Paul's efforts to take the gospel to the gentiles, Matthew began to ponder who were the gentiles in his generation, living far from the truth of Christ? As he began to ask that question in prayer, God laid on his heart the nation of Afghanistan. Matthew began taking steps towards service in that war-torn country, and repeatedly God confirmed His calling. Months later, Matthew was in Uzbekistan, serving with a church-planting effort and getting on-the-ground education in Central Asia ministry and culture. Listen as Matthew tells the stories of the people he met who experienced supernatural visions and encounters with Jesus. He'll also talk about the risks of sharing the gospel among Muslims, and the miraculous story of how God helped him get approval for an Afghan visa from the Taliban consulate! Scripture calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus—not people—because He alone is perfect and unchanging. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” - Hebrews 12:2 Recent and ongoing scandals involving pastors, churches, and ministries—leaders who fail and fall short in their service and devotion to God—have been devastating for many believers in Jesus Christ. This is especially true for those who closely followed these leaders, hanging on their every word, listening, trusting, and at times valuing what they said as more important than the Word of God itself. The exposure of immorality, misconduct, dishonesty, and deception takes a terrible toll on those who once placed unwavering faith in these men and women who positioned themselves as spokespersons for God. When these leaders’ sinful activities are uncovered, it rattles some followers to their spiritual cores. Faith begins to stumble when it has been placed more in people than in God. In many cases, it reveals that instead of focusing on the Lord, their eyes, ears, and attention were centered on the leaders they admired. Yet none of those leaders suffered and endured the cross or experienced separation from God on our behalf. When tempted, they were not willing to lay down their human desires and sinful impulses, much less their lives, for us. Called to Be Fishermen, Not Establish Our Own Kingdoms God never intended for us to be followers of men. We are called to be fishers of people, but followers of Christ alone. As Matthew 4:19 records: “‘Come, follow Me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’” He calls us to follow Him and to hide His Word in our hearts. When we do, it protects our hearts and minds from stumbling. It guards us against falling into unbelief because of another person’s sin. Psalm 119:11 reminds us of this safeguard: “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” The Apostle Paul further explains in 2 Corinthians 3:3 how God writes His Word on our hearts when we yield to Him: “You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” When we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we do not collapse like a line of dominoes when trusted spiritual leaders fail. Our hearts may grieve over their sin, but our faith remains steady. Hebrews 12:28 reminds us that when our focus is on God, we stand on an unshakable foundation: “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.” Jesus warned us to remain watchful. In Matthew 7:15, He cautions: “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” He also assures us that we can discern the difference between genuine followers and deceivers. As He explains in Matthew 7:16-20: “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.” Intersecting Faith & Life: Have you been devastated by a spiritual leader’s sin? Has your faith been shaken by their failings? Saturday of the Fourth Week of LentMarch 21, 2026  Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is Saturday of the Fourth Week of Lent.Our reading today is taken from the holy gospel according to John. Some in the crowd who heard these words of Jesus said, "This is truly the Prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But others said, "The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he? Does not Scripture say that the Christ will be of David's family and come from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?" So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. Some of them even wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. So the guards went to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why did you not bring him?" The guards answered, "Never before has anyone spoken like this man." So the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed." Nicodemus, one of their members who had come to him earlier, said to them, "Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" They answered and said to him, "You are not from Galilee also, are you? Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." Then each went to his own house.The gospel of the Lord.Homily In today's gospel we do not hear Jesus speak, but he is the center of everyone's attention. They all have an opinion about him, but they cannot figure out who he really is. Some think he is the Messiah, and for that the Chief Priests and Pharisees sent their guards to arrest Jesus. Other question Jesus' Galilean origins: "The Christ will not come from Galilee, will he?” The Pharisees are adamant: “Look and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." Others say that the Messiah must come from Bethlehem. They did not know what we know from Matthew and Luke that Jesus was born in Bethlehem and is of the house of David. Jesus, however, makes little of his human origins, whether he is from Galilee or Bethlehem. In the verses that come before today's gospel reading, he declares that he comes from the one who sent him. He comes from above; it was God the Father who sent him. For saying that the Chief Priests and Pharisees were even more anxious to arrest Jesus, but the guards returned empty handed, saying: "Never before has anyone spoken like this man." So. They ridiculed the guards and the crowds who were beginning to believe in Jesus. Interestingly, a lone voice spoke up in Jesus' defense. It was Nicodemus, the Pharisee who some time before had gone to see Jesus by night. He asked: "Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?" The other Pharisees ridiculed him for his efforts; and then each went off to his own house. Listening to Jesus can bring ridicule and following him may even be dangerous. That was true in Jesus' day and is still true in our own. Even now, people are not in agreement over what Jesus represents. Jesus himself said that he had come not to judge the world, but to save it. His compassion for the outcast, the suffering and hungry drew an attentive following, but today compassion is considered weakness and attention to the needy a wasteful use of resources. Christians who adopt this attitude overlook Jesus' humanity on this earth and concentrates on his reigning in power at the right hand of God. This is a Jesus who will come in judgment for the earth, and will come at the head of a victorious army of angels. Thus, they can bless wars, whether in the Ukraine or in Iran. Of course, Pope Francis and now Pope Leo have questioned and sharply criticized this self-styled form of Christianity. Scripture teaches us that Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. When he comes in glory, he will gather to himself all who have imitated his life of love and reconciliation. As he said in the famous parable of judgment: “what you have done to the least of my brothers and sisters you have done to me.” We need more Nicodemuses today who are willing to stand up for the justice that flows from recognizing the dignity of every human being as created in the image and likeness of God and redeemed in the blood of Christ. We may not be able to do much on the world stage, but we can begin by recognizing the dignity of each person in our home, our school and our work. May God bless you. Fr. Karl E. There is something uniquely peaceful about the early morning. Before the noise of the day begins, there is a quiet invitation to sit with God—to listen, to speak, and to simply be in His presence. Morning reminds us that each day is a fresh start, a new opportunity to walk with Him. Psalm 5:3 captures this beautifully: “In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait expectantly.” God is not distant or distracted. He hears us. He meets us right where we are, even in the stillness of a new day. Spring mirrors this same sense of renewal. After months of cold and dormancy, life begins to reappear—buds form, colors return, and warmth slowly replaces the chill of winter. It’s a reminder that seasons of barrenness do not last forever. Just as morning brings light after darkness, spring reflects the deeper truth of new life found in Christ. Jesus declared in John 11:25 that He is the resurrection and the life. His resurrection is the ultimate picture of renewal—life overcoming death, hope rising where despair once lingered. When we welcome both a new morning and a new season like spring, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness. His mercies are new every morning. His love continues to renew and restore us, even after difficult or dry seasons in our lives. Spring invites us to open our hearts again—to notice God’s work around us and within us. I trust God, but sometimes I like to give God suggestions. You know just in case he was 50/50 on what to do, I like to interject by bright ideas and tell him how he could make things work out really good. I occasionally even tell God how he could do “cool things”, as if he was sitting on his throne in heaven stumped over how he could pull off something cool today and he was waiting on me to help him. Do you do that too? I wonder what God thinks of our ideas of taking the path of least resistance. I wonder how God views our tendency to desire what is fastest and easiest. I wonder how God feels about our complete avoidance of hardship, struggle, and suffering. Well, there just so happens to be a story in the bible about this exact thing. Let’s read it together. Matthew 16, Jesus is walking along with his disciples. They’re doing awesome miracles together and making a huge impact every where they go. In fact, they had just finished feeding the crowd of thousands with a small amount of bread and fish. Now they know his power. The disciples know Jesus is the One. They’re all in. Verse 21-23 “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Understand, Peter was just trying to save Jesus from suffering. He was trying to find an easier way. He was trying to fix this. And Jesus said, THIS SUFFERING DOESN’T NEED TO BE FIXED. THIS HARDSHIP DOESN’T NEED TO BE AVOIDED. That’s a hard pill to swallow. I want my suffering and your suffering to be fixed. Like immediately. I don’t want times to be hard for anyone. If there was something I could do to ease my friend's pain after her loss, gosh I would do it. If I could lift the suffering of my friend whose world has fallen apart, I would do it. If I could make your marriage problems go away, I would in a heartbeat. If I could solve your financial problems, boom, it would be fixed in an instant. If I could lift your burdens… If I could clear the way… If I could bring you healing … If I could restore what has been broken… I would be like Oprah. You get a new car. You get a good marriage. You get health. You get a whole family. You get a bonus. You get a baby. You get your answers. You all get EVERYTHING! No suffering. No struggle. No waiting. All your problems are fixed and there’s nothing but sunshine and glitter ahead, my friend. I really would fix it all for you … If I could. And to that, Jesus would say to me, “Satan, get behind me!” Why? Because just like Peter, I’m focusing on the wrong thing. I’m focusing on human concerns and overlooking the fact that God’s concerns are bigger, greater, and far beyond anything I can imagine. God is in the eternal game where current suffering will be redeemed. I tend to play in the right now game where suffering is always avoided. In your effort to avoid the suffering, go around the hardship, and skip the waiting line, have you become a stumbling block? Remember, that’s what Jesus called Peter. He was a stumbling block. His attempt to fix everything was in the way of God’s good plan. Honey, what if your attempt to fix everything is in the way of God’s good plan? What if God doesn’t need us to fix anything, and instead he needs us to partner with him in the bigger picture of what he is doing. What if this isn’t about what you’re going through right now, this is about what this will create for the future. What if God has magnificent plans that are so far above and beyond your scope of imagination, but the only way to get to them is through this stuff that doesn’t make sense? You know, this stuff you want to avoid. This stuff you want to skip. This stuff you’ve been giving God “suggestions” on fixing. Okay God, so this is going to fall apart? This is going to hurt? This isn’t going to work the way I had hoped? Now isn’t the time? I don’t like it, but I trust you. I will not try to fix your plans. I won’t get in the way of your work with my suggestions of an easier way. God has been trying to clear the way in your life, and you know what he’s been trying to move? YOU. You with your ideas of how it is supposed to be. You with your plans and good suggestions. You with your complete avoidance of current suffering that are for eternal purposes. What? You think you are above current suffering used for eternal purposes? You think you should be exempt from that? Dismissed because you’ve been a good person? Well, Sis, Jesus wasn’t dismissed and I’m pretty sure he was maybe even a little bit of a better person than even you. If Jesus wasn’t above suffering, why would we ever believe we are? I don’t want to be that stumbling block. I don’t want to be in the way of God’s plans. If God says I have to go through this, then I trust it’s for a purpose greater than my comfort. If God says this has to fall apart, I trust he will be doing something new on the other side of this and when I get there I’ll be more like the woman he created me to be. So, here we are Lord, trying our best to get out of the way. Here we are, surrendering to your plan that doesn’t make sense to us. Here we are, trusting you give and you take away, and our hands are to remain open. Here we are, counting on your timing to be better than our own. Here we are, trusting if you don't fix it and we can't avoid it, then you'll carry us through it. You, you, you and I have already planned all the things, so don't get too excited and, and weepy here folks, but things are just, things are gonna be. New and fresh and more interesting and, uh, more craft filled and more inspirational. When I need inspiration to write, I look for one of our episodes.That's Jennie. So I think this is gonna be, this is gonna be great.Jennie: I think it's gonna be great too. But before we actually say goodbye, I mean, 10. Is a long time and I thought it would be fun to ask you all what it was like 10 [00:02:00] years ago when you started, and Sarina 10 minus whatever the time is, but what was the writing landscape like as a whole maybe for you, and then all this wisdom, all these years that you've shared.What's, what's the thing that sticks in your head the most is what you would want to leave with, with the listeners, what is the your best piece of writing advice from all of this time? So. Jess, why don't you start? You're the og.Jess: Well, I, I definitely wanted to start. For those people who have not been around since the very beginning, you have to understand that it's really horrifying when people say they go back and like start from the beginning because, um, and we'll be posting pictures in the show notes.I have a ton of pictures throughout the years, but we originally, um, we, we would go into this little, I had a tiny, tiny house and we would go into the eve space off of my daughter's room. And it was raw insulation with a light bulb, and we sat on the floor and it was [00:03:00] like. Maybe at the tallest point, maybe four feet high, so you had to kind of crawl in.And I have a picture of us, um, podcasting from inside there. And it was, and it was very hot in the summer. It would get very, very hot. My house did not have air conditioning and um. But it was delightful and it was this thing that we had talked about doing for such a long time, and I was so proud of us.And mainly it was kj. KJ was the one who said, we're not gonna talk about this anymore, we're just gonna do it. So she got us into gear and just brought her stuff over to my house in her basket and said, let's go. Let's do it. And we bought microphones and everything and it was. It was a big new adventure.And if you had said, then, how long do you think this is gonna last? I don't know that I would've said 10 years. But there's, you know, then Sarina came in and, and Sarina has, has been a part of this as a guest since the very beginning too. And a couple of things that I wanted to share were that one time Sarina and KJ and I, uh, were doing a [00:04:00] double, a double header episode and I forgot to hit record for both of them.And so. We did this incredibly fun, very long episode, broken into two pieces that, um, it went off into the ether and. I did learn from that. And then at the same time, by the time we were sort of on our game enough to be able to really interview people, we went up to Maine to interview Richard Russo and we went to record at his daughter's wonderful bookstore in Portland, Maine.And um, I had three modes of recording. I had, um. Two microphones and I had a handheld digital thing that I had on the table between us and, um, mode one failed and mode two failed. And so the only thing we had was, you know, our little digital handheld on the table in between us. So. There's a lot of stuff like that.There was the moment I got to text KJ and tell her that we were getting David [00:05:00] Sedaris, there was the day she emailed me to tell me that we were getting Anna Quinlan. You know, and I just so many cool things that, um. It makes me so happy that we've produced something good out of all of that. And one last thing.The, the, the thing that I think I've learned the most is there is no one right way to do this. That every single time I hear about, like whether it's the, you have to write, writer write every day, you have to write every day, or you have to write in a certain way, or you have to write in a certain place, or you have to write with the door closed, or you have to write with the door open, all of those things.Um, none of those are rules. None of them are rules. They're things that people do and I'm really glad that I've had the opportunity to talk to a lot of people about all the different ways they do it.Jennie: That's amazing. Um, kj, do you remember this, uh, light bulb and no insulation time? KJ: Oh yeah. I don't remember the time you didn't record particularly just ‘cause it happened more than once. And [00:06:00] the other thing I would throw in is that the more famous, the guest, the. Less interesting. They were, it was almostKJ: always true. Jess: It wasn them. It was, yeah. I think we got all jacked up about like, I don't know. It just,Jess: I don't know.Wasn David Sari's advice to young writers was the worst.KJ: Yeah. It advice really wasJess: anyone has ever given, itKJ: was,Jess: yeah, a writer. He said, don't submit your work. Don't ask. Don't try to get you, wait for people to read it. Wait for people to ask you if they can read it.KJ: Yeah,Jess: that's which this, this is, KJ: this worked for him. He is an NF one and it will not work for you.Jess: Right. Yeah, I think thatKJ: my favorite, I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna lay it out there. I'm not even gonna put any caveats on that. That won't work.Jess It won't work.KJ: No. I think it's always been the most fun when we get in deep into the craft and anytime someone is too practiced with their answers or it's the same answer they've given a million times.You're [00:07:00] right. It was cold and it was, um, it just wasn't good.Sarina: Yeah. So the more fun people were always the people who were really in it with us.KJ: Yeah. Yeah.Jennie: So, Sarina, do you know when you came in, do you know what the, the n minus number is?Sarina: No, because I was a guest star even before we got out of the, the, um, kgs closet.It's true. It's true.KJ: One of those not recorded episodes was recorded in the eve space. That's true. We had, we roped during fairly early.Jennie: Yeah. In that 10 years, you've probably written more. More than, well, how many books have you written in that time? Sarina, I mean,Sarina: um, 50. At 50 50 ish.Jennie: That's crazy. That's crazy. So what do you know now that you didn't know then?Sarina: Oh, so much, so much that, like giving advice, you know, I, I [00:08:00] now feel like less qualified to give advice than I did then, you know how that goes. Like, the job gets harder, not easier. I have a, a good working vocabulary for why, but it doesn't make me feel like anybody's, you know, special savior.Jennie: Yeah. Yeah. What do you remember about starting in and the, the, um, all these episodes? What sticks in your mind asSarina: you know? Um, I loved the opportunity to talk to people who I think are fantastic. I also learned that I am not a fantastic interviewer and that, and that, um. That isn't a skill of mine that I, it's, there's so many things, like I'm so busy, I write so many books.I can't learn to be the interviewer that you deserve. So I only. Did interviews selectively and sometimes they were just so fun. Like, [00:09:00] um, the, the person who broke broke the mold about the interview being interesting, the more famous they are was Emily Henry. ‘cause she was Oh yeah. She was fun to talk to.She was just right there with us and, and ready to have a good time and, and so wise and also so, so nice. And that, that's really great when you can talk to somebody who's killing it in your own genre and you know, they're just so wonderful about it. Um, and then, you know, then we had the odd, very sweaty interview where nothing seems to go according to plan.And I won't name the author because I do admire this person very much, but they were not. Willing to take any expertise onto themselves. So KJ and I just sweated all the way through this interview trying to get this person to, to tell us KJ: Say something. Say anything.Sarina: Yeah. Tell us how you feel, you know?KJ: Yeah.Sarina: And it could not be done.KJ: Nope.Sarina: So, you know, that one, I, [00:10:00] I will never re-listened to that one, but, um, but I really, what I got out of it, honestly, was spending time with all of you guys, and you teach me things every single day. And another thing about this job is that I find that I have to relearn the best lessons over and over again.And when you are compelled to speak lucidly about your job, you know, a couple of times a month, um, it forces a certain reckoning with your own skill and expertise. Like I might say that I, you know, don't want to be anybody's, um, masterclass, but I really do know a lot at this point and, um, every time I talk to you guys and we'd, and we gathered together like this, I always learn something.Jess: I love, I think Sarina is the most amazing explainer and teacher. And so getting to learn, um, especially, you know, in these [00:11:00] recent, uh, nerd Corner Publishing Nerd Corner episodes, it's been so cool to just learn from her. It's really, really fun. And, you know, if, if we take it all the way back, like the first, your first romance novels, you know.We're just coming out when we just, when we started this thing. It's just been such an incredible journey from there to where we are now. The other thing that's been really cool is that this podcast has made me really accountable to my goals and to, you know, not that. You guys also do that for me. But saying things out loud in front of other people has always been my, the thing that has saved me, whether that's about my recovery or, um, you know, whatever it is.Um, people talk to me all the time and say, you know, was it hard to come out publicly about, you know, being an alcoholic? I'm like, absolutely not. It's what's kept me sober. And I feel the same way about the writing, that when I talk to, um, the listeners that I, I feel like. Someone may [00:12:00] come along someday and ask how that, uh, that goal of mine is going. And, and I like that.Jennie: Yeah. That's so good. Kj, what, what are your best memories and, um, best, best advice that you've gotten or, or given?KJ Well, you know, spend 10 years, so it is a long time ago, but I do remember the time Jess was riding her dinosaur to my house to record and got hit by a snowplow. Mm-hmm. Um, that was, that was good times.Jess: Yep.KJ: We have Snow Fred Dinosaurs up here. Yep. In New Hampshire. Um, the Sedaris thing that was, that was just funny and also really cool ‘cause I have such deep admiration for, for him, and I'm quite certain that if somehow he ever heard. I, he would not care. We think that was terrible advice.Jess: What's also really was really funny about that one is this is an only David Sedera sort of situation where, oh Lord, he, he has said very specifically that he, during COVID, he refused.To get Zoom, any [00:13:00] kind of zoom sort of situation. So we had to, we went all the way to Concord to,KJ: this wasn't Coco COVID, this was before that. No, no, no. I, I know, but I'm saying like, he has, this is not new information. He has said very publicly that he doesn't do likeJess: Oh, yeah. So he wouldn't even, even let us have somebody bring him a laptop to his apartment.Right. And set it up for us, which we were like, happy to do, butKJ: Yeah. Yeah. We had to go there.Jess: So he called and yeah, we went to NHPR in Concord and, uh, our, and our wonderful producer Andrew was. Able to get everything connected for us. Um, but it was one of those moments where, you know, we are constantly talking about how to like bend over backwards to get marketing and get people to listen to what we have to say.And yet, even though he puts obstacles in the path of people who want to hear what he has to say, they will gladly jump through those hoops, uh, for him.Jess: Yeah. Crazy. Yeah. I mean, you know, so kind of him to do it.KJ: Yes. Anyway, I mean, that was super funnyJess: and, and I am looking at my wall that [00:14:00] has the postcard, the thank you postcard that he sent us.So when he says he sends thank you notes to everyone, he sends thank you notes to everyone because we got one. And from what I understand, he sends them to every bookseller, every person who drives them everywhere. He sends thank you notes to everyone.Jennie: Wow. That's what I think of when I think of you, Jess.mThat's a thing you do too. You're so good at that. Well, I, I have to say that I have been a listener for this whole time, and the thing that you all brought was. This authenticity, this sense of what it's really like to do this work. And you all are writing such different things and so accomplished at those things, and your willingness to kind of just open, open it up and share what that looks like with no, you know, varnish over it or, or you know, polished.Just like, this is what it's really like and this is who we are and this is how it happens, and [00:15:00] that the work gets done in such. Messy circumstances and, um, that lesson and, and that generosity of showing people that that's true. Which kind of goes to what you were saying, Jess, like there is no way, but, but also just doing the work is the way and.That's what you have all modeled and continue to model, and obviously,KJ well, that's what I want people to take away from this. Mm-hmm. Is listen. Okay. We're joking that 10 years is a long time and 10 years is a long time. It's a long time to do anything. But also 10 years ago I had one book to my name. And you've never heard of it.It was called Reading with Babies, toddlers, and Twos, and it got me all my other jobs. Jess had no books to her name. Mm-hmm. 10 years ago, Sarina Couple not, you know, just, just, just barely getting started. Jennie actually had a ton of books to her name, but that's, you know, that's a different story. So here we were.10 years ago sat down and said, [00:16:00] we are gonna do these things. And we did not all, I mean, it wasn't, nobody came and asked us for it. All of David Saris. Um, nobody had, none of us had instant success. You know, no one called up and said, Hey, can I do this? And like immediately got articles in the New Yorker or whatever.Uh, publishers were not banging down our doors. We. We were banging down theirs and we were all very determined to, um, to make this a professional endeavor. The, the podcast and the writing and the books and all of it. And so I guess what I'm saying is I don't know where you are listener, but wherever you wanna be in 10 years.Uh, you know, maybe you won't get exactly there. I wouldn't say any of us has gotten exactly there ‘cause we're not done. But still, we came a long way in 10 years and I would like to see other people, [00:17:00] um, sit down and actually do the thing so you can go to the place.Jess: That's been one of the big joys, I think, also of this podcast is seeing other people's work happen.Like hearing from listeners that, oh my gosh, I hadn't started my book. I was trying to get motivated to start my book, and then I created this proposal and now the book is coming out, and that's, I, I, I just, I can't, I can hardly wrap my brain around that. Um, it's been a really amazing progression and the, the group of people that have sort of coalesced around listening to this podcast and getting in, in touch, some of them have become friends and that's been really amazing too.Sarina: I hope what some people will take away from this, um, is that very few people who do what we do are truly trained for it. You know, I don't have an MFAI don't KJ and just don't have journalism degrees. They have law degrees instead. But, um, you can, you can [00:18:00] do this on the job training. That's what we did.That's what you listened to us do. And I'm reminded of that, um, quote by El Doctoral. You know, writing a book is like driving at night with the headlights on. You can. You can't see the whole distance, um, but you can still get to your destination. And there was this Time when KJ and I were debating this quote on this podcast and KJ said, yeah, but the last time we went driving at night, we almost hit a bunny.And it was true. And I think that what might be the, one of the times I laughed the hardest on this podcast.Jess: You know, it's also interesting, I was thinking that, um, you know how I said that there isn't one way to do things, and even the way that we do things has evolved over time and like Sarina has learned how to, has become a coffee shop writer and has learned how to write in other places.And I've learned how to write in other places and I never used to be able to do that. Um, [00:19:00] so how we get the work done really has. Uh, evolved with the needs of what's going on around us and what our career needs from us, and, and that's been really pleasant. Pleasant to watch too.Jennie: Well, it's been an honor to listen to you all and to be, uh, working alongside you.And I am, I'm thrilled to be carrying the show forward. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Communist Cuban officials detain 16-year-old protestor Protests in Morón, Cuba, erupted the night of March 13 and lasted through the next day in response to a week of blackouts and shortages of medical and food supplies, reports International Christian Concern. Protestors ransacked and set fire to the Cuban Communist Party's headquarters. Among those arrested on March 16 were Evangelical Pastor Elier Ávila and his son, Jonathan. Though the pastor is now free, his 16-year-old son is still behind bars. While his son was accused of participating in the vandalism, some suggest that Cuban officials painted many of the law-abiding protestors of criminal mischief. Anna Stangl, the Director of Advocacy for Christian Solidarity Worldwide, said, “The detention of a 16-year-old child, with a serious medical condition, simply because he attempted to exercise his freedom of expression, is unconscionable.   “Despite the gravity of the situation on the island–with rampant hunger, scarcity of medicine, outbreaks of disease, and the failure of the power grid, the answer of President Miguel Canel, and the Cuban Communist Party, is to round up and imprison those who dare to call for change.”  Please send a 2-3 sentence letter to Ambassador Lianys Rivera urging Cuba to release Pastor Elier Ávila's son, Jonathan. Trump's snappy rely to Japanese reporter During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump was bold in his response to a provocative question from a Japanese reporter, according to Real Clear Politics. Listen. REPORTER: “Japan and U.S. are very good friends. But one question: Why didn't you tell U.S. allies in Europe and Asia, like Japan, about the war before attacking Iran? So, we are very confused about, we Japanese citizens.” TRUMP: “One thing, you don't want to signal too much, you know? When we go in, we went in very hard, and we didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Okay? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor? (laughter) Okay? Right? “No, you believe in surprise, I think much more so than us. We had to surprise them, and we did. And because of that surprise, we knocked out, in the first two days, we probably knocked out 50 percent of what we and much more than we anticipated doing. So, if I go and tell everybody about it, there's no longer a surprise, right?” Joseph Duggar arrested for sexually abusing a minor Joseph Duggar, from the reality TV show "19 Kids and Counting," was arrested Wednesday on allegations of sexually abusing a minor during a family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida, reports NewsNation.com. The married 31-year-old former reality star, who has three children of his own, was charged with lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor and molestation of a victim less than 12 years old. His arrest occurred years after his 38-year-old brother, Josh Duggar,  was convicted of child pornography charges. Officials say the victim identified Joseph Duggar as the abuser, saying he repeatedly asked her to sit on his lap. She said these incidents would allegedly progress into Joseph Duggar covering her with a blanket and touching her inappropriately. The victim reportedly stated that Joseph Duggar apologized for his actions, and the incidents stopped. Officials say the victim's father confronted him on Tuesday, and Joseph confessed his sins to both the father and detectives in Tonitown, Arkansas. In Matthew 18:6, Jesus said, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” Late-term abortionist, who died, had no regrets Susan Robinson, one of America's most infamous late-term abortionists, died earlier this month, less than a year after being diagnosed with cancer, according to an Instagram post made by her fellow abortionist Shelly Sella. She wrote, “Susan was my friend and colleague in third trimester abortion …, both in Wichita and Albuquerque. Susan was drawn to abortion … by her sense of justice, which never wavered. … Together, we helped create a model of abortion.” LifeSiteNews.com reports that Shelly Sella emphasized that Susan Robinson had “no regrets” and that she was “very pleased about the whole business” before she died. Jonathon Van Maren wrote, “Reading the news about Robinson, my mind was immediately drawn to two videos I had seen her in. The first was After Tiller, a 2013 documentary featuring four late-term abortionists, which I reviewed over a decade ago. It struck me that two of the featured abortionists – Susan Robinson and Leroy Carhart – are now dead, while Warren Hern and Shelly Sella are retired.” The second was the video footage published by David Daleiden of the Center for Medical Progress in his bombshell undercover investigation exposing the abortion industry and the trafficking of baby body parts. At one point, the late Susan Robinson tells Daleiden, “The fetus is a tough little object, and taking it apart … is very difficult,” Robinson tells Daleiden at one point. “I mean, taking it apart on day one is very difficult.” Later: “You go in there, and you go, ‘Am I getting the uterus, or the fetus? Oh good, fetus. [Robinson made a stabbing sound] What have I got? Nothing. Let's try again.'” Van Maren concludes, “Translated: It is hard work to dismember and crush a baby. This was Robinson's sense of justice.” Micah 6:8 says, “[God] has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Actor Chuck Norris hospitalized And finally, Chuck Norris, the 86-year-old actor and martial arts icon, has been hospitalized in Hawaii following a medical emergency, reports NewsNation.com. The incident occurred on Wednesday on the island of Kauai, though the nature of the emergency has not been disclosed. The hospitalization appeared to be sudden. As recently as Wednesday of this week, Norris was on the phone with a friend while training on the island, cracking jokes, and showing no signs of distress. Norris had been actively training in Kauai in the days before the emergency. A black belt in karate, taekwondo, tang soo do and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Norris posted a video on his birthday, March 10, showing him sparring with a trainer. NORRIS: "I don't age. I level up." The caption read, “I'm 86 today! Nothing like some playful action on a sunny day to make you feel young. I'm grateful for another year, good health, and the chance to keep doing what I love.” Though largely retired from acting in recent years, Norris has remained active on screen. Spring is a time of new beginnings. When I was younger, it reminded me that the endless days of darkness were behind me. As someone who struggles with depression, spring brings a renewed sense of hope. It helps me feel more positive about life and breaks the cycle of staying inside, hiding from the world, and feeling empty. When spring arrives, we are greeted by blooming flowers and the warm sun on our faces. Many springs have filled my heart with joy and given me a fresh start emotionally. There is something about winter’s darkness that brings dread, yet spring ushers in hope and joy. You may have experienced this too; spring has a way of leading our hearts toward warmth, tranquility, and happiness. A few years ago, I began searching for subtle signs of spring even during the winter months. On walks, I would look for the tiniest flower bud or a green vine stretching quietly in the shadows. Without fail, God would reveal a small sign of what was coming. Even the smallest glimpse gave me hope for happier, warmer, longer days ahead. The frigid season was passing, and spring was on its way. Spring feels especially beautiful after winter because it restores our view of the world’s beauty. During winter, nature lies dormant; in spring, it awakens and flourishes once again. Spring is not a season to overlook, even if it stirs up our allergies. Instead, we can rejoice in it and give God glory for the fresh start we have in Him. Just as the earth returns to life, we can experience renewal too, especially if winter has been a difficult season for us. If winter was hard, we need to be honest with ourselves without condemning our struggles. Some seasons are heavier than others. Yet we can hold onto the promise that spring will come. Some years it may feel delayed, but it will arrive. And when it does, we can rejoice and praise the Lord with hopeful hearts. Intersecting Faith & Life: The Bible tells us, “When a king’s face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring” (Proverbs 16:15). In biblical times, retaining a king’s favor was vital. His disfavor could result in death, but his approval meant protection and preservation. Likewise, a rain cloud in spring is a blessing. It nourishes the plants and flowers, sustaining their growth. In the same way, a king’s joy brought life to his people. The proverb reminds us that favor and blessing produce renewal, just as spring rain revives the earth. Take special notice of spring this year and allow it to warm your soul. Winter has passed, along with its bitter cold and long, dark days. The sorrow and mental heaviness that sometimes accompany those months can begin to lift as well. Spring carries the promise of new life, renewed joy, and restored hope. Praise the Lord for the beauty and life He brings through this season. What is your favorite thing about the season of spring? Following Jesus often begins with small, daily choices that require us to set aside our own desires in order to serve others. These moments can appear ordinary—helping someone in need, offering encouragement, or sacrificing our time for those we love. Yet these everyday acts reflect something deeply spiritual: the practice of “dying to self.” In 1 Corinthians 15:31, the Apostle Paul wrote that he “dies daily.” Paul understood that living for Christ requires a continual surrender of our own ambitions, preferences, and comforts. The Christian life isn’t about pursuing self-centered goals; it’s about allowing Christ’s character to shape our actions. Jesus Himself modeled this perfectly. Though He was fully God, He chose to live in humility and dependence on the Father. He spent time in prayer, sought God’s will, and dedicated His life to serving others. As Mark 10:45 reminds us, Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. Imitating Christ means learning to follow that same pattern. It may involve sacrificing our time, choosing patience when we feel frustrated, or putting someone else’s needs ahead of our own. These choices are not always easy. Our natural instincts often push us toward comfort and self-interest. But the good news is that we are not expected to live this way through our own strength. God has given believers the Holy Spirit to guide and empower us. As we remain connected to Christ, the Spirit produces qualities like love, patience, kindness, and self-control in our lives. When we surrender our desires and follow Christ’s example, we discover something surprising: true joy often grows from a life of selfless service. What may initially feel like sacrifice becomes a pathway to deeper purpose and fulfillment. Every day presents new opportunities to reflect Christ’s love. As we choose humility, service, and obedience, we grow into people who more clearly mirror the heart of Jesus.
