The STR Division takes great pride in congratulating Professor David Teece for his distinguished contribution! Criteria for Award: The STR Distinguished Scholarship Award shall be awarded biannually for a discovery of major importance in strategic management. The award recognizes an individual or individuals that have either made a specific   theoretical or empirical discovery or have developed a core set of ideas that fundamentally advanced research and understanding in the field of strategic management. Thus, priority is given to the discovery's importance to the field, with secondary priority weighted toward more recent discoveries, rather than the accumulation of disparate body of work. Individuals who are or have been active participants of the division are eligible. In choosing among the nominees, the Awards Committee will assess how the development of the field would have differed if it did not have the benefit of the contribution (i.e., was it a next logical step in the scientific progress or did the individual(s) do something that was really unexpected Process of Nomination and Selection: Nominations for the STR Distinguished Scholarship Award will be sought from the STR Division membership, as well as from the STR Award Committee, prior winners of the Award, STR Executive Committee and Officers, and prior STR Chairs. The STR community should nominate individuals who meet the criteria for the award and highlight what is the discovery of major importance in strategic management. No self-nominations are accepted.   (c) STR - Strategic Management Division - AOM

Have you heard the term, "We are a Christian Nation, founded on Christian Ideals?" Our guest this week, Brian Kaylor, would likely take issue with a comment like that, and guess what...He's also a Christian Pastor, Editor, and President of one of the oldest Christian publications in America called Word & Way, founded in 1896. Brian, unlike many evangelicals in America, is steadfast in his efforts to ensure that separation of church and state rings true for believers and non-believers. It's not uncommon to find Brian testifying alongside atheist and satanist when state legislatures are pushing for Bible literacy classes in public schools, or when there's a bill giving special rights to collegiate religious student associations. This is an amazing chat and discussion that I hope you will enjoy! Check out this short documentary that features Brian Kaylor "Is America a Christian nation? Red clay bricks are among the most ubiquitous building materials worldwide. Julio D'Arcy, a chemist at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, describes to Adam Rutherford how he and his team have turned ordinary house bricks into energy storage units that can power home electronic devices – thanks to the red iron oxide (rust) pigment and a conductive plastic nano-material infused into the bricks These new ‘smart bricks’ can be charged to hold electricity a bit like a battery. As the pandemic continues, we continue to try to find ways to manage it, treat the disease, detect it and cure it. As necessity is the mother of invention, we're currently witnessing some of the most intense periods of scientific innovation in the 21st century. And there have been some incredible discoveries, innovations and inventions in just the last 6 months. The Royal Academy of Engineering announced a special round of awards this week, to recognise the heroics of engineers, designers and scientists to help tackle this pandemic. Professor Raffaella Oconé is Chair of the Awards Committee at the Royal Academy of Engineering, and she told Adam about the range of much needed inventions to tackle COVID19. The current mantra of 'test, track and trace has so far had limited success in the UK. In part because of the difficulty of testing enough people, tracking their movements and tracing the spread of the virus. By the time someone is displaying symptoms and then being one of the few people to then get a test, they may have spread the virus to many people. But scientists across the UK and abroad are beginning to realise that maybe there might be a cheaper alternative, that gives even earlier warning of a spike in infection - by detecting the virus in sewage. At Univision, she was responsible for increasing the understanding of the importance of Hispanic voter and the key political issues that affect them among key political constituents across the country. In 2013, she was recognized with a Multiethnic TV Leadership Award from Broadcasting & Cable magazine and in 2012, Cartagena received the ADCOLOR® Legend Award in recognition of her tireless efforts in leading the conversation about the Hispanic market. In 2007, she was named the Hispanic Direct Marketing Professional of the Year by the Direct Marketing Association. And finally, she is the author of Latino Boom II, Catch the Biggest Wave Since the Baby Boom, her second book on the Hispanic market which was published in 2013. Ms. Cartagena is a Hispanic media and marketing pioneer with 25 years of experience developing, launching, and leading some of America’s most successful Spanish-language consumer magazines, including People en Español and TV Guide en Español. Ms. Cartagena, a graduate of the University of Miami, is a member of the Awards Committee for National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and lives in New York City. Resources Latino Boom Nielsen LatinX The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century by George Friedman News Roundup Can Facebook overcome its woes with Zuckerberg and Sandberg still leading the company? Facebook, which has lost about $100 billion in market value since March, can’t seem to right itself after a year of the Cambridge Analytica and election interference debacle. The UK Parliament got hold of senior level communications from a company in the U.S. called Six4Thirty which is suing Facebook. Six4Thirty, whose core business model was scanning Facebook data for bikini photos, obtained the communications in the discovery process in an attempt to establish that Facebook knew about the loophole it used to obtain Facebook’s users data, which was allegedly the same loophole that Cambridge Analytica used. Some of the communications are said to be from Mark Zuckerberg himself. So normally, the communications would be shielded from disclosure as the matter is being litigated. But it just so happens that Damian Collins, the Chair of the Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sports select committee, caught wind of the fact that one of Six4Thirty’s founders was in London—bringing the company within the UK’s jurisdiction. So that enabled Collins to seize the documents by sending a Serjeant at Arms to the founder’s hotel room and requiring him to turn over the documents within 2 hours or face a fine or potential jail time. So there’s that. And as far as Facebook’s hiring of a lobbying firm that allegedly worked to play into anti-Semitism against George Soros, Facebook’s head of public policy Elliot Schrage announced in an internal memo that he was responsible for hiring the firm. However, he said that it was never his intention to play into anti-semitism. Facebook COO Cheryl Sandberg weighed in in a comment, saying that she was ultimately responsible. Schrage has been planning to leave the company for some time, and he will be replaced by former UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Calls by some shareholders and others for Mark Zuckerberg and Cheryl Sandberg to step down from at least some of their responsibilities has fallen on deaf ears. As Zuckerberg said in a CBS Business Interview that, while he apologized for the company’s woes, said that stepping down or replacing Sandberg is “not the plan”. Can Amazon be humbled by pushback from its workforce? Amazon has huge, global aspirations. But will the company go as far as it needs to in order to resolve internal labor disputes? In the U.S., Amazon raised its minimum wage to $15 per hour but eliminated other perks, including employee benefits. But on Black Friday, thousands of European workers went on strike, demanding better pay and working conditions. All of this is happening amidst Amazon’s aggressive expansion efforts beyond ecommerce. For example, the company is bidding for 21st Century Fox’s 22 Regional Sports assets—including YES TV which broadcasts the New York Yankees. The Wall Street Journal also reports that Amazon is now the Number 3 digital advertising platform, behind just Google and Facebook, with ad sales growth projected to be at over 400% between 2017 and 2020, way ahead of second-place Tencent in China whose ad sales growth is projected to be at just under 200%. Roger Stone crony Jerome Corsi says he won’t take FBI plea deal Conspiracy theorist and Roger Stone ally Jermone Corsi told CNN that Robert Mueller offered him a plea deal on one count of perjury connected with statements Corsi made saying that he had no communication with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Trump confidante Stone himself said that he’d never had direct communication with Assange either, saying that he got all of his info through a backchannel alleged to be New York radio personality Randy Credico, which Credico has denied. Russian hacking is resurgence American officials and security firms are reporting that Russian hacking efforts are on an uptick following the U.S. midterm elections. The hackers are apparently trying to test the waters with the new Congress coming in. But experts are concerned that we won’t know the full scale of the hackers’ capabilities until the 2020 presidential election. Is China’s TikTok the next big video karaoke app? In a sector such as mining where the investor can either multiple or deplete his or her wealth quickly, knowledge and its wise application is absolutely crucial. The investor’s knowledge is often the determining factor regarding whether the investor is successful or not. One of the best ways to grow in knowledge, to learn about new investing opportunities and to stay on top of current trends is by attending the annual PDAC Convention in Toronto. The PDAC Convention is the world’s largest and premier mining conference attended by people from all over the world. In 2017, the PDAC Convention had over 24,000 attendees from 130 different countries. In this episode, Glenn Mullan, President of the Prospectors & Developers of Canada (PDAC) shares about the upcoming PDAC Convention. Glenn Mullan is the 36th President of the Prospectors & Developers of Canada (PDAC). Over his +40-year career, Glenn has followed a traditional exploration and prospecting path. He began with contract geophysical surveys, where he caught the bug for being in the North and working in remote locations, then began prospecting and staking mining claims independently while completing his B.Sc. in Geology and Earth Sciences at Concordia University. He later conducted contract exploration geological services, mostly located in Northern Ontario and Québec. Glenn would go on to broker numerous prospector/vendor transactions with arms-length public companies, and form a public company in 1999 that evolved into Ni-Cu-PGE producer that currently employs more than 300 people in Northern Québec. Glenn has a broad spectrum of industry-related experience—across Canada and Africa—including early-stage acquisitions and exploration through PEA, BFS, permitting and mine development-stages, as well as CSR initiatives, financing and corporate development. That said, he much prefers early-stage grassroots exploration in remote locations and near his home base in Val-D’Or, Québec. Currently, Glenn serves as President and CEO of Golden Valley Mines Ltd, where his main area of interest continues to be grassroots early-stage exploration, primarily for base and precious metals in Canada and abroad. Glenn has been a PDAC member for over 40 years, serving on the Executive Committee, Awards Committee, CSR Committee and the Governance & Nominating Committee.
