Mike has on Adam and Marcin from Good Old Games to discuss the importance of game preservation. With so many games being made every year, it is easy for consumers and producers to lose sight of how to best preserve the forgotten relics of the past. Fight N' Rage Developer Interview! The Creation of the Best Modern Beat Em' Up! I'm very excited for today's guest, Sebagames, the developer of Fight N' Rage, my favorite Beat Em' Up of all time! In today's episode we discuss the history of the game, his story and motivation to get such a massive undertaking completed as a solo developer, and of course the possibility of a sequel and what the developers thoughts are on his "creative crisis" in regards to making a follow up. We also discuss classic arcade based design, such as Fight N' Rage, Alien Versus Predator, Final Fight verus the modern simon says style design of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge, River City Girls, Scott Pilgram, and these types of games. Another aspect of the episode is talking about how insperational the story of Fight N' Rage can be for other indie developers, but how often the stories of indie devs are overlooked in favor of older studios like Square and their tale of creating Final Fantasy. Fight N' Rage at the time of this recording is on massive sale and I strongly strongly recommend picking it up on Steam, Good Old Games, Nintendo Switch, PS4/PS5, Xbox and wherever else the game pops up.

Welcome to Episode 54 of the Retro Gaming Dads Podcast. This week Barry will take control while Anthony is away on his jollies (holidays for non-Northerners). He will be taking a look at Square Enix's surprise announcement, as well as a future Square Enix title that could be getting a remake. Some PlayStation owners are also concerned as their PlayStation 1 digital titles are no longer able to be played due to expiring over 40 years ago? Is this a nefarious ploy by Sony to move everyone across to PlayStation Plus, or just some intern entering the wrong server date? We guess the latter. GOG will is looking to return to it's roots of Good Old Games as they make changes to highlight the classic PC titles you can play on Windows 10 and 11, and speaking of good old games... Ron Gilbert has teased us with a brand new Monkey Island adventure coming to PC later this year. Some of the most interesting deviations between US retro games and their Japanese originals are the decisions made when they were localized to non-Japanese countries, the politics of the time, and subsequent censorship. Before steam, getting new games on PC require a gamer to go to the store. It was yours after the transaction was complete. Now, we have several digital distribution sites, and, no one really owns anything anymore. Excluding GOG or Good Old Games, once you buy it from steam, a gamer must have an account and an internet connection. Now, comes the rise of subscription based gaming. Buying a new game requires a credit card, and an internet connection. Once a user stops paying, no more games. It's the new future every gamer will eventually live in. It will not just be downloading several launcher, it will be downloading one and choosing that one subscription package to the games you like. Publishers will be back in control of what gamers will or can play.Show Notes:New Overwatch Legendary Skin EventNext-Gen Wifi is here!Steam new discovery has some problemsCapcom messaging about the new RE gameLogitech has a new wireless mouseESA tries to rebrand E3NVIDIA bundles COD: MWAnother day, another launcherBlue comes out with Yeti XWhy the future of gaming is in the subscription plan. Welcome to Show 224, Topics for the show are as follows: 1. Steam and the anything goes mentality - now they have competition in the form of epic, discord and gog https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUHl9ZThXU0 https://tagn.wordpress.com/2019/03/08/steam-policy-plays-out-as-expected/ 2. With Epic Games, Good Old Games, Discord and Origin now competing against steam is this a case similar to what we see with streaming services with everyone trying to grab a "piece of the pie" when there is only so much pie to go around? Will We see the same thing as is happening with "Battle Royale" mode with every game offering them to the point we are sick of it? https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/03/disney-to-close-vault-for-good-as-it-moves-film-library-to-streaming-service/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-_xOhBaf8w 3. Mobile gaming vs. PC Gaming - have corporations begun to step away from rampant corporate greed such as we saw with EA's Dungeon Keeper and other "Pay or Wait" games? https://variety.com/2019/gaming/news/nintendo-mobile-microtransactions-1203156557/ 4. Gopher - just make good games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-_xOhBaf8w

Jonathan discusses Legacy of Kain: Defiance, the final and best game of the narrative-action series. It brings together all of the previous games, and binds them all together one one fantastic satisfying whole. Get this one from Good-Old-Games (gog.com) and play it. If you love vengeance, action, and puzzles, you'll love this. https://www.gog.com/game/legacy_of_kain_defiance This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm
Jonathan discusses Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain. It has some good story in it, and more glorious Simon Templeman, but is the weakest of the series, in puzzle and in writing. You can find it on Good Old Games gog.com. This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm
Jonathan discusses the Action Story classic 'Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver'. It brims with attitude, though clearly was made in the PlayStation 1 age. A great story, you can find it on Good Old Games gog.com.

00:00:00 - As with most other fish tales, the truth of the story of the really old rockfish is that it wasn't really all that old in the first place. Oh well. Charlie also learns why it's hard to describe what a fish is, which you can learn more about on the What the Fish? podcast. And if you want to learn how to eat the right kinds of fish, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has you covered with this handy app. 00:16:22 - Drinks are for when you're old enough. This week Charlie enjoys a Fresh-Squeezed IPA from Deschuttes Brewery. Kelly makes a startling confession, but you'll have to listen to learn it. And Ryan is trying to up his game with a La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, which Charlie agrees is a good one. 00:20:47 - Things get heavy when the gang straps in to discuss Gravity on this week's Trailer Trash Talk! 00:33:23 - We all know we have plenty of wind floating around, but how do we make sure it's around when we need it? A new study proposes storing wind in porous rocks to be used later. One step closer to living in a sci-fi world. 00:50:45 - PaleoPOWs are often also stored underground until needed. Kelly is excited about a new recurring donation from Courtney H. Thanks, Courtney! Catherine calls in to leave a voicemail about why the clouds change color throughout the day, a topic Ryan and Charlie deftly handle while also mentioning Ben's Titanium Physicist episode on a similar subject. And Charlie reports back that Cade K., Amy, and EJCulbert have all told us about the availability of Battle Chess on Good Old Games. Finally, in terms of other podcasts, Kelly was recently on Wild Ideas and Ryan did a whole week of the STAR WARS MINUTE. Check them out! Recent Good Old Games releases have gotten Rob thinking about what he wants to rescue from the past (besides Troy, that is). Julian doesn't think the distant past is the big problem, it's the games of the late 90s and early 2000s. Everyone agrees the LucasArts situation is a disgrace. Troy says Alpha Centauri doesn't hold up all that well, and is swiftly nerve-stapled and loaded into the Punishment Sphere.

It wouldn’t be Halloween if we didn’t put a little scare in ya, right? Rest assured, the image above is not a sign that the ironically named legend in vaporware known as the Phantom Console is making a comeback, it’s just a nod to our big topic for this week: Digital Downloads. As it turns out, conceptually the Phantom was onto something, regardless of how nonexistent their hardware really was, and services like Steam, OnLive, Xbox Live Arcade and more have finally delivered on that promise of never having to leave your home to purchase a new game. More impressively, services like Beamdog, Good Old Games and Steam offer hundreds of titles that many of us cut our teeth on and let us relive our past glories in games like MDK2 HD and the Ultima series. In this week’s podcast, we examine how digital distribution has become entrenched in gaming, pushing the market into new and exciting places, and to help us out we asked Trent Oster (one of the co-founders of Bioware currently one of the heads of the digital distribution service Beamdog) and staff writer Victor Grunn to join us. Happy Halloween!
