It's not hoarding if it's pretty books! This is a show many months in the making! Turns out coordinating a podcast with someone in Australia is not as simple as you would think. But it finally worked out and here we are!  I wanted to talk to Sara because she runs a fairly awesome bookish community that would've been wiped from existence if she didn't raise it from the ashes. And now, it's alive and thriving and about 200 people strong.  In this episode, we're talking about monthly book subscription boxes, special edition books and how they appeal to the collectors in us, and of course, the discord that brings it all together.   Check out below for all the info we discussed! If I missed anything, reach out and let me know and I'll update it.  Until next time! Links and Info Discussed Here are the links where you'll find the top 4 monthly book subscriptions we discussed. If you're really curious, every site has a catalog/past book database where you can see the offerings they've had in the past. If you want to really dive into it and have more questions, the link to the discord is below. Every subscription is going to have a waitlist you have to sign up for, some of which could be as short as a few weeks to as long as 10 months. So keep that in mind! Fairyloot Illumicrate Owlcrate The Bookish Box Fourth Wing was brought up a lot. So you can find more info on the book itself right here.  If you want to check out all the absolute madness that happened when it first came out, along with the first run copies that were going for over $500 (you know, the one I could've bought for $15 but I cancelled it..) Then go ahead and check that out right here.  Bonus: Here's a really good round up on all the special editions of Fourth Wing that are out there! (For reference, the 3 that I have are the holiday edition, Waterstones', and Fairyloot's) And here is Sara's Fourth Wing collection!  Sara mentioned a copy of Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan that she just HAD to have, despite it being in Italian, a language that she does not even SPEAK. If you want to check out La figlia della dea della luna and see if it's worth it, you can do so here.  We discussed Sword Catcher by  and how superior Illumicrate's version of the book was (the version Sara has) when compared to Fairyloot's version (the one I had). If you want to see the difference, then here is Illumicrate's, and here is Fairyloot's.  Here are our Top 5 Books of the Year! After editing the show, I realized that maybe I should've gone with books that actually came out this year, as oppose to books I've read since some are a few years old. But too late now! Here they are, along with the books that we did not like! Sara The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (by S.A. Chakraborty) Bonesmith (by Nicki Pau Preto) Sword Catcher (by Cassandra Clare) Divine Rivals (by Rebecca Ross) Yellowface (by R.F. Kuang) Silver in the Bone (by Alexandra Bracken) (did not like) Los The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi (by S.A. Chakraborty) (freaking READ IT!) A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking (by T. Kingfisher) Legends & Lattes (by Travis Baldree) Fourth Wing (by Rebecca Yarros) The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (by V.E. Schwab) The Jasad Heir (by Sara Hashem) (did not like) Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (by Gabrielle Zevin)  (did NOT like)   Lastly! In this episode, we take a look at the contentious relationship with her vehicles. In discussing this topic, we've decided our new head canon is that Roarke keeps a mechanic on site, in an apartment in his garage. I mean...why not? Eve's main problem is that she is one of those people that doesn't want new things because she's already used to the things she has, and doesn't want to have to go through the trouble to get used to something new. This is generally how Eve lives her whole life. Luckily for Eve, in "Promises in Death," Roarke finally gives her the DLE Urban, and now she has her own brand-new car so she doesn't have to worry for a while about losing a car and having to get used to a new one all over again. BUT... Is the DLE a Sedan or a SUV? Let us know your thoughts! BONUS: Here's a photo gallery of AJ's attempts to create Eve's Pea Green Car (along with other models) on MidJourney.com: Here's some attempts at creating an image of the DLE (If it is, in fact, an SUV) on Midjourney.com:

Ep 454: The Grape Miniseries -- Aglianico

Wine for Normal People

In this show, we cover Aglianico - the best red grape you may have never heard of. Widely considered one of Italy's top three red grapes with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, many consider the wines of Aglianico some of the world's top bottles too. That said, because Aglianico is a grape of the more obscure regions in southern Italy (Campania and Basilicata, mainly), the wine hasn't gotten its due. It is much less expensive than top Barolos and Barbarescos or Chiantis and Brunellos – although it is slowly catching up. It is a grape well-suited to warm Mediterranean climates, and for the changing climates of once cooler growing areas like regions of California and Australia. Aglianico is historic, yet modern and there has never been a better time to get acquainted with the wines of this beautiful grape. Photo: Aglianico Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page   Here are the show notes: We cover the history of the grape and discuss possible origins. Aglianico is considered to be one of Italy's oldest grapes and it was always thought to be an import from the Greeks who colonized Campania and other parts of southern Italy. Today, Attilio Scienza, the foremost Italian grape scientist, has changed that theory. He believes the grape is native to southern Italy and the name is related to the Spanish word for plains “llano” (ll=gli, both sounds like y sound in canyon). The grape may have been domesticated from grapes growing on the plains We discuss how the grape was nearly extinct after phylloxera, and how Antonio Mastroberardino - preserved and propagated Aglianico to make one of the best red wines in Italian history – the 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva. The D'Angelo family revived Aglianico around Monte Vulture in Basilicata around the same time. The success of these two families on the world stage, encouraged others to start making wines from Aglianico, and today there are many great examples of wines from the grape Photo: 1968 Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva, widely considered one of Italy's best wines   Aglianico Viticulture: Aglianico produces medium to small, compact bunches. The individual berries are small, round, and dark blue-black with quite thick skins. The grape requires a long, warm growing season with a warm fall to fully develop flavors and calm tannins and acidity. It is early budding and late ripening. Overly cool or overly hot conditions don't do good things for the grape. Aglianico is one of the latest harvests in Italy, with Vulture often starting harvest in mid to late November According to Ian d'Agata, the top English-speaking writer on Italian wine, Aglianico has three biotypes (variations of the same grape, but not different enough to be clones): Taurasi, with small berries, less vigorous, and sensitivity to spring weather that may reduce the harvest Taburno (also called Aglianico Amaro -- but not because it's amaro /bitter, rather because it's higher in acidity) is less fertile with big bunches. It is earlier ripening, with higher alcohol and higher acidity del Vulture is most intensely flavored biotype, with strong fruit aromas and flavors, and it seems to have fewer viticultural issues The grape also has clones, the most popular of which are used to create bolder, darker wines     Terroir Aglianico prefers volcanic soils. The Campania DOCGs are on extinct volcanoes or have influence from nearby Vesuvius. The volcanic activity makes these soils rich in nutrients, well-drained, and very complex. The grape loves elevation and it thrives in spots where other grapes can't ripen. Although Aglianico needs dry climates with abundant sun, it must have diurnal temperature swings at night so it can retain its acidity and build flavor slowly   Photo: Mastroberardino's Aglianico vineyards  Source: Taub Family Selections, Mastroberardino Page Styles: Generally, Aglianico has the following characteristics: Very high acidity and tannin. Floral (red roses), red fruit (sour cherries), plum (esp. from Vulture), leather and herbs (esp. from Taburno), smoke, and mineral notes. The wines are always savory. It is capable of long aging. Regardless of where the grape grows, these characteristics seem to be present. Some styles are lighter and more floral with higher acidity, while others are deep, earthy, fuller, and complex with tobacco, licorice, iron ore, and coffee notes. Aglianico needs age. It can be tough in its youth, with harsh tannin and acidity, since the grape has naturally high tartaric acid   Other styles: IGT wines – blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or other native grapes Passito: Similar to Amarone from Veneto, these wines are made from partially dehydrated grapes. This style is very rare Sparkling: Made in the IGP classification. These wines often display red cherry, strawberries, and spice flavors and aromas     Regions The grape is almost exclusively in southern Italy, mostly in Campania in the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Sannio, and Caserta. In Basilicata, wines are mainly made around Potenza and Matera. All these areas are in cool, dry, sunny spots in the mountains The three main areas for high quality Aglianico in Italy are:   Taurasi (1993 DOCG), which is near Avellino, is mountainous and therefore at altitude, has volcanic soils and has an ideal climate -- hot, sunny days, and cool nights to slow ripening and build flavor. Up to 15% other red grapes are permitted in the blend to soften Aglianico (often Piedirosso, the native aromatic grape, which is lighter than Aglianico, is used) Flavor profile: Black cherry, raspberry, cigar, coffee, earth, leather. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium bodied. Riserva: has higher alcohol levels is aged longer Producers: Mastroberardino, Feudi di San Gregorio, Ponte, Terre degli Svevi, Re Manfredi, Quintodecimo, Donnachiara, Antionio Caggiano, Salvatore Molettieri, Perillo, Luigi Tecce, Terrdora, Urciolo The wine we were drinking during the show, 2013 Feudi di San Gregorio Taurasi. Here is a link to the show I did with owner Antonio Capaldo, ep 337   Aglianico del Taburno (2011 DOCG) is near Benevento. These wines are less famed than Taurasi because the region was used for bulk wine until the 1980s. The region consists of 14 towns on the eastern side of the Taburno mountain. Rather than pure volcanic or a volcanic mix, soils are clay -limestone. Taburno has bigger diurnals than Taurasi, and is generally cooler than Taurasi leading to higher acidity. Flavor profile: Pepper, black fruit, figs, leather, and herbs. High acidity, high tannin, high alcohol, medium body Producers: Cantina del Taburno, Cantine Tora, La Rivolta   Other Campania DOCS include: Cilento, Sannio, Gallucio, Irpinia, Falerno del Massico     Aglianico Del Vulture (we did a whole podcast on this) is located in Basilicata, just around the province of Potenza in the north. The wine region borders Campania and Puglia. The wine is required to be 100% Aglianico. Aglianico del Vulture DOC and Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCGs are on volcanic, mineral rich, well-drained soils around the extinct volcano. The elevation of Monte Vulture and the rain shadow it creates make perfect conditions for Aglianico – it gets its long, cool growing season, where it can develop flavors and aromas over time Flavor profile: black plum, coffee, dried herbs, smoke, dark chocolate. These wines have lower acidity than the wines of Campania. They still have high tannin, and high alcohol Producers: Cantine del Notaio, Elena Fucci, Pasternoster, Macarico, Basilisco, Cantina di Venosa, Bisceglia, D'Angelo Aglianico can also be found in: Abruzzo & Molise, where it is blended with Montepulciano Lazio, Calabria, Puglia, where it is sometimes blended with Primitivo     New World Regions Australia: Adelaide Hills, Barossa, Langhorne Creek, Mudgee, McLaren Vale, Riverina, Northern Tasmania– cool and warmer regions! The wines are apparently less acidic and tannic, and quite high quality     USA: California: Many regions grow the grape but Caparone in Paso Robles was the first in 1992. It shows promise as the climate warms. Other US: Texas, New Mexico   Argentina and Mexico are also having some success   We end with a discussion of food pairings and encouragement to go out and try this gem!   Main resource: "Native Wine Grapes of Italy" by Ian D'Agata   _______________________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors this week: Wine Spies uncovers incredible wines at unreal prices - on every type of wine in a variety of price points. Did you know that podcasting is one of three sustainable places to make your content? Podcast SEO is extremely important and has gained an immense increase in attraction online and within the business community. Even major companies are expanding their products to host and invest into the podcast community. I've been within the podcast space for years, and it still shocks me when I find out SEO is not being used. People are really struggling, because although SEO is pretty old and podcasting is old, no one is marrying the two. The best way for podcasters to grow and be seen is by using SEO, because with SEO, we intentionally make content our audience is looking for. It is no longer enough to post a show or have many episodes, there has to be intention behind it. Now, this increase in investment around podcast SEO, can be seen as both positive and not so great due to the increased competition. However, using SEO with your podcast works and we must start acknowledging it. In this episode you'll learn: What podcast SEO is? Why is it important as a podcaster to use podcast SEO? How is the podcast community growing and why is it both good and not so good? What are the things that impact your SEO? The 5 Things You Need To Know About The 2021-2022 NBA Season

Sports Curious

Sliding into your podcast queue just before the season starts. It's the 75th anniversary of the NBA, and there's a chance the Milwaukee Bucks will repeat this season but honestly, the field is wide open. But we're not here to talk standings and odds. Let's talk about the more exciting side of the NBA Season. Fashion first, always. Leaguewide, teams will wear 123 different uniforms this season, with each team receiving four jersey editions: Association, Icon, City and Statement. Three OG NBA franchises – New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors (then Philadelphia) and Boston Celtics will wear a fifth Classic edition uniform. (The original shorty-shorts are not included). On those wide varieties of jerseys, you'll see the jersey sponsorships patches. The patches, which are now commonplace across the league, started in 2017 and have generated more than $150 million in operating revenue. Ever wonder where all of the money goes from the fines handed out to the players and coaches? To charity. Half of the money goes to the NBA for distribution to its official charitable partners. The other half goes to the NBPA's (National Basketball Players Association) non-profit, the NBPA Foundation. Some years the donations to the NBPA Foundation have totaled between $2.5 - $3 million. The funds go to furthering the sport and assistance to individuals, communities and organizations, sometimes globally. Old guys rule, for now. Many of the familiar faces in the league, like LeBron James (36), Chris Paul (36) and Dwight Howard (35), are the oldest players in the league. Look for young players like Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans) and Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons) to step into the spotlight this season. The Los Angeles Lakers, which James and Howard both play for, is the oldest team in the league with an average age of 30.4. The Oklahoma City Thunder are the youngest, with an average age of 23.4. Look out men, the women are taking the court, and technically, they're in charge. Danielle Scott, the daughter of a college basketball official, becomes the sixth full-time female referee this season. That's the most women the NBA has ever had on staff at one time. You can't talk about the season and not speak about COVID. The NBA is the last major professional sports league to emerge from COVID protocols and resume a regularly scheduled season, but city-imposed mandates will impact the game. In New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles, out-of-town teams are exempt from the vaccination mandates, but the home teams are not. You've likely heard about Kyrie Irving (Brooklyn Nets) and how he can't even practice with his team until he's vaccinated. Irving's story may be the loudest but isn't the norm as the league is 95% vaccinated. Bonus: Here are the nuts and bolts of the season. Thirty teams will play 82 games – 41 at home and 41 away. At the end of the season, the top six teams in each of the two conferences will claim a place in the playoffs. The seventh through 10th ranked seeds will compete in a play-in tournament for each conference's two remaining playoff spots. Yes, more than half of the league makes it to the playoffs.

The organization ensures the perfect culture fit for all the employees. It prefers hiring people who believe in the values of Zomato before being a part of the team. The compassion and acceptance Zomato shows is cherished by Lavanya. The company even attempted to find jobs for people who had to be laid off due to the pandemic.Remote work and its impact on the work-life balance:Lavanya's current organization is quite flexible and open. They do require employees to be in the office. Lavanya further talks about the work-life balance blurred due to remote work. There are employees desperate to work from the office as they are used to it. However, people are adjusting to this new way of work now. Employees often face the stress of managing multiple things at one go. With remote work, the boundary of not reaching out to people apart from working hours is removed. Here is where the mental health implications come into the picture. Lavanya advises leaders to avoid these conversations. She further says that employees should “pick up habits that don't confine to a screen or technology.”People should not be taken for granted. The problem also persisted during the beginning of the lockdown. Plenty of people didn't find a reason to take leaves. They would continue focusing on work every day. But some organizations realized the need to solve this. People need to take time-offs to refresh themselves. Constant work can make them monotonous. Advice to the founders/ people managers:Leaders need to learn to be more flexible and adaptable to situations, considering how the pandemic changed everything. Policies had to be reframed due to the changes in the way of work. They need to be empathetic towards their employees and focus on upskilling them. They should organize engagement programs for the employees for something different from what they are working on. Employees of similar interests (books, music, etc.) can also create clubs and interact.Follow Lavanya on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Junius DsilvaGet the highlights of this episode from our blog.BONUS: Here is The One-place Guide to HR Challenges and Solutions to gain in-depth knowledge about Human Resources and its challenges.

‘The only thing a designation carries is the level of responsibility'On this episode of The Shape of Work podcast, we have Dr Upendra Pieris to share about his incredible journey from being a data processing officer to being the CEO of OREL IT, a global corporation that enables machine vision led innovation. It has grown exponentially from a two-person fraternity to a 4500 plus strong company in just over a decade. With over 15 years of experience in the global IT industry, Upendra has contributed immensely to the IT industry of Sri Lanka and encouraged young professionals to become aspiring and innovative leaders. In this episode, we discuss with Upendra:His first 90 days as CEOHis philosophy on leadership in terms of employee well-being and professional developmentWhat did the pandemic mean for OREL IT: from challenges to transformationsReimagining the role of HR during the pandemicThe importance of Employee recognitionThe tech ecosystem in Sri LankaFirst 90 days of being a CEO:Being a CEO from a Vice-President has been a huge change for Upendra. He explains the challenges of being the last in the line of designation. For the first 90 days, Upendra worked on clearing the basics. He looked back at what he did as a vice-president. Being the CEO made him realize that there are small things that often get neglected by employees. These are the things he focused on. He made certain plans to put in front of the team and the management.Upendra feels that switching to a higher position might have created a gap between him and his employees. But he believes that one should put full effort to reduce this gap.How to view leadership?Upendra sees leadership in two contexts.Leadership by exampleSuggest employees to treat others the way they want to be treatedHow did the pandemic affect their company? When the pandemic began, the company was not known to the concept of working from home. They have a lot of focus on data processing, and they have their own data centers. Hence, the work-from-home facility was not available. Within five days, the tech companies started distributing computers to the employees. They now have a well-managed system with 60%-70% people working from home while the rest work from the office. They have taken certain restrictions. 95% of customer demand was delivered that year. They have also arranged medical and doctor support and ensured that employees receive timely deliveries of certain facilities and food at the time of need. The tech development in Sri Lanka:According to Upendra, Sri Lanka is not lacking in tech but rather in tech marketing. The world does not know about the tech developments because they have not been marketed efficiently. However, several organizations have excelled individually, and they are facilitating the giants in the international industry.Another concerning factor is the skill migration in the companies. He also highlights the improvements needed in the education system of the country. However, Sri Lanka has the ability and is also now backing Indian operations.Follow Upendra on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Abhash KumarGet the highlights of this episode from our blog.BONUS: Here is your solution to conduct a successful Employee Recognition Program in 2021 in your organization.

Invest In Yourself And Your Design Business - RD251

Resourceful Designer

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2021 23:27

Where would you spend your extra money? In the Resourceful Designer Community, we recently discussed the question, "what would you do if you had extra money to invest in yourself and your business?" There were many great ideas on how to use the extra money and, just as importantly, how not to use it. It was such a great conversation that I thought I would share my thoughts here on Resourceful Designer. Before I go any further, I must state that I am not a financial planner or financial advisor, nor do I play one on TV. In fact, I have absolutely no expertise when it comes to this stuff. As far as I know, experts who see this may tell you what I'm saying is completely the wrong approach. These are my thoughts on what I would do if I had extra money to invest in myself or my business. So here goes. Imagine you had extra money sitting around. Anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. I know, it’s a nice thought. But you never know. Maybe you had a favourable tax return. Or you inherit a sum of money. Maybe you won a cash prize in some lottery or draw. Perhaps you had an outstanding quarter and have money left over once all your monthly bills and expenses are paid off. Whatever the reason, you have extra money and try to figure something practical to do with it other than blowing it on a vacation or other luxury. No, you want to use that money as an investment of some sort. But what? This is the order of preference for how I would invest the money. Investing in your future. I believe the most important thing any business owner can do is invest in their future. That future could mean next year, or it could mean retirement in many years. The idea is to use the money to help you down the road. As a solopreneur, your income relies on your ability to work. In most cases, if you are unable to work, you don’t make any money. That’s why I believe padding your future is one of the most important investments you can make. This may mean putting money into a savings account to act as a three to six-month buffer in case things get tough and business slows down. Work in our field is never guaranteed, and even the best of us experiences lulls from time to time. This buffer can help tide you over and help cover your expenses until work picks up again. Or maybe an accident or illness will force you to take a medical leave. Having a buffer to get you through that period may mean the difference between staying afloat and being forced to close your business. And then there’s retirement to think of. Saving for retirement is something you should start doing as soon as possible, especially if you want to continue living the good life in your later years. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to save up. I don’t know about you, but as a creative person, it’s hard to think I’ll ever retire. I believe I will be creating and designing things until the day I die. But the fact is, one day I may not want to spend 8-10 hours a day in front of my computer anymore. And that means less money will be coming in. Not to mention that even though designers are like a good wine, we get better with age; some people may not want to hire a 65-year-old to design the brand for their hip new startup. These two reasons alone. For short absences such as dips in work or medical leave and retirement are why I believe investing in your future is the first thing you should do with your money. I know it’s hard when you have bills and debts to pay. But even a few dollars here and there will add up over time. If you do come into some extra money, this is where I suggest you invest it. In your future. Investing in your present. Next on my list is investing in your present. Investing in your present means putting money to use towards immediate self-improvement. Learn a new skill. Invest in is things such as tutorials, courses and programs to learn new skills or improve your existing skills. These may be design-related, or they may be business-related. There are many great places to learn new skills, such as Udemy Skillshare LinkedIn Learning Creative Live Let's say you design Wix websites and have had to turn down several clients because they wanted a WordPress site. You may put your extra money to good use by learning WordPress and expanding your service offerings. Or you may want to take a course or webinar on growing your business through social media. Or learn more about SEO or Google Analytics. The possibilities are endless when it comes to learning new things. Not only can you learn something to grow your business, but you may learn a skill you can offer to your clients to make more money. Invest in yourself by reading books. Invest in business and self-improvement books that will help you grow. I prefer listening to self-improvement audiobooks. I just recently finished listening to The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and next up I have Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck. But if you don’t have time to sit and read a book. Audiobooks are a great way to still learn from the experts while out and about. If you’ve never tried an audiobook, you can get one free book of your choice when you sign up for a trial Audible account. If you decide it’s not for you, cancel without paying anything, and they let you keep the free book you downloaded. Join Networks. Join networking groups or communities such as the Resourceful Designer Community to grow as a designer and business person. Or join a group such as Toastmasters who can help you fine-tune your presentation style when pitching to clients. If you have extra money, after you’ve invested in your future, that is, I suggest using it to improve your current situation. The little bit you spend now can bring exponential growth for you and your business. Your future self will thank you for it. Side note: I know I just said you should invest extra money in tutorials and courses and such. But don’t go looking for things to learn just because you have money to spend. It’s never a good idea to spend money on courses and such just for the sake of learning something. Only invest in things you want or need to know. Otherwise, invest the money in your future instead, as I mentioned earlier. If you’re unsure if it’s important enough to learn now, go back and listen to episode 8 and episode 94 of the podcast. In both of those episodes, I talked about Just In Time Learning which plays right into what I’m talking about today. Investing in your business. The final category on my list is investing in your business. This means putting your extra money to use by improving the infrastructure that helps you perform your job. Update your computer and equipment. Purchase software and design resources. Update your brand Update your website and marketing materials. Update your working environment However, just like with investing in your present, there’s no point in spending money on a new computer or equipment unless you actually need it. You are better off saving the money for when you do. Invest in growth. There are more ways you can invest in your business. Use the extra money to hire outside help, such as photographers, copywriters, developers, etc., to help with your own promotional materials. Hire a virtual assistant to help you with certain tasks and activities. I speak from experience that hiring my VA is one of the best investments I’ve made for my business. If you haven’t done so already, use the extra money to register a trademark for your business name and visual assets. It’s always good to protect yourself. And finally, Spend the money on growing your business through marketing, advertising, sponsorships and networking. Remember, the more people who know about your business, the faster you will grow. When in-person conferences were cancelled in 2020 due to COVID, many of them went the virtual route. I took the money I would have spent on travel, hotel and expenses to attend PodFest Multimedia Expo and instead invested that money to become a sponsor for their online event. That opportunity put my brand, Podcast Branding, in front of thousands of people in my niche and helped boost my business in ways that attending the conference in person could have never done. So after you’ve invested in your future and your present, it’s a good idea to invest in your business. Bonus Here’s a bonus afterthought. If you’re satisfied that you’ve covered the three categories above, you can always use the extra money to thank your clients. Sending a gift basket or special gift to a client, or even sending a client something as simple as a coupon for a free pizza, can go a long way to strengthen your relationship. Imagine creating a new logo for a client and then sending them a glass mug with their new logo etched on the side?  That sort of thing can go a long way. You can never go wrong when you invest in your client relationships. As I said at the start, I'm not a financial expert. However, I believe you can't go wrong if you use any extra money you have to invest in your future, your present and your business. It's how you grow. Where would you spend any extra money? Let me know by leaving a comment for this episode. Tip of the week Refine search results by excluding unwanted domains If you're searching for something on Google or other search engines and are tire of unwanted results such as Pinterest pins or YouTube videos showing up, you can refine your search by adding "-Pinterest" or "-YouTube" to the end of it. Doing so tells the search engine to not display any search results pertaining to those platforms. Give it a try.

While Dave's CHASIN' THE BIRD has been delayed until October, you can still get your Chisholm fix with this earlier chat with Greg from March 17, 2017. Dave Chisholm may not have been in the comics industry long enough to achieve the 'rock star' status of someone like Jim Lee or Paul Pope, but in terms of creating both comics AND music, he's a band apart from just about every other creator out there. Because when you write and draw your own graphic novel (Instrumental from Z2 Comics), compose/perform a companion soundtrack to be released simultaneously WITH that graphic novel, AND have another full-length album of music from the band you front being released around the same time (Talking Under Water self-titled debut album on April 28th, 2017) . . . what other label is there? Decide for yourself after listening to this interview, where Greg talks with Dave about process both musical and sequential, the difficulty of getting the essence of sound across a silent medium, and more. Where else could you hear talk about Frank Quitely, Kevin Nowlan, and Brian Eno in the same discussion? And if that wasn't enough, you can hear of clips "Celebration" and "Death and the Narrator" (from "Instrumental"'s upcoming score) in the episode itself, PLUS the full "Celebration" track from the Multiversity Comics episode post page! Some of them may still be a work in progress, or things that I wish I were better at. Think about what a dragon you’ll become. Think about the glorious adventures, the good times, the personal fulfillment, the pursuit of happiness. Think about what an amazing individual you will have become, and have earned. There’s nothing holding you back. Nobody needs to give you permission. Make a promise to me that you’ll do everything you can to become the best version of yourself. When things are hard, know that there is an entire legion of magnanimous spirits cheering you on. Great generals, kings, presidents, artists, entrepreneurs, mystics, philosophers, workers, former slaves, peasants, cavemen. They’re all so proud of you. For me, I imagine Ralph Waldo Emerson, King Sejong the Great, and my father putting their hands on my shoulders when I’m going through a rough time or when I’m experiencing a moment of triumph. They’re telling me that they’re proud of me. They’re telling me I’m the finest, most intelligent, wonderful, strongest specimen Korea and America have ever produced. They’re telling me they love me. Some day, when I’m gone, I’ll be there alongside them telling you the same.Support the show (http://maimtime.com/support)

And check out the all new digital version of The Emperor is out now, with dozens of links to original articles, historical documents and movies! To our dear listeners: Happy 420 in advance! This is going be a strange one for most of us who are used to celebrating and sharing joints, pipes, bongs in the company of friends. These days NOT SHARING IS CARING and though it’s necessary and crucial (despite what some Republican governors are still insisting), it can feel so damn difficult at certain moments, especially on holidays. Last year at this time I was in San Francisco, a city that treats 420 like a national holiday. There were parades and people swarming the streets making all manner of merriment. This year it is a more solitary experience. Holidays in the time of COVID can strain the human spirit because they make you aware of all that isn’t happening and everything that you’re not participating in. So, to counter that wistfulness I’m bringing you this interview with Dan Herer, the son of Jack Herer, the author of the 1985 classic: The Emperor Wears No Clothes. Dan and co-author Bruce Dietzen have created a magical brand new digital version of The Emperor with dozens of links to original articles, artifacts, historical documents and movies (yep, you can see “Hemp For Victory,” the film the US government made when it needed hemp during WW2 then denied making once the war ended). It’s a real treat, especially if you’re passing this 420 in quarantine or in solitude or if you’re in need of a green distraction to counter the blues that the entire world is feeling. Download it here for $9.99 If you don’t know The Emperor, it was the first book to tell the truth about cannabis and hemp. It came out in 1985, smack in the middle of the Reagan “Just Say No” era and it laid bare 80 years of lies and propaganda. It also documented how cannabis and hemp were among the most useful plants on planet earth and showed the ways that hemp could be used to replace fossil fuels and unsustainable building materials. It even featured Henry Ford and the car he built from hemp in 1941. Today Mercedes and Bugatti use hemp to make car doors more crash resistant (apparently when mixed with certain plastic fibers it is ten times as strong as steel.) With over 700,000 copies sold it’s fair to say that The Emperor changed the world. It set the record straight, educated and inspired generations of activists, and helped lay the intellectual groundwork for medical cannabis legalization in California a decade later. In our interview, Dan talks about what his dad was really like (I’ve always thought he was a salty character—the rat-tat-tat fury of his writing makes that clear), his fierce opposition to cannabis until a woman friend changed his mind, and how being locked in jail for 15 days inspired the book’s creation. I hope you enjoy this interview and this photo montage that Dan put together for the Brave New Weed podcast community.Bonus: Here's a special report on COVID-19 and Cannabis created by Dr. Junella Chin, my partner and the Chief Medical Officer of our online education company, MedicalCannabisMentor.com. It answers many of the questions she's getting every day from patients and adult use consumers around the country. We've already discussed why you should use a note servicing company in Episode 55. but today I thought I would shed some light on the things you should consider when you are in the process of selecting one to be added to your team of professionals. Reasons to use a note servicing company Reason #1: they make life easier for the lender, because they handle the tedious stuff like sending late notices Reason #2: Collect and keep track of all the payments Reason #3: they deposit the money into your account and give you a monthly statement Reason #4: (And the very best of all) Remember, I am lazy by nature, and don't want to spend a lot of time tracking the loans I make or chasing borrowers. They have people who will do it for you and the borrower pays the fees! You pass along the cost to your borrower. They pay for you not to be inconvenienced by your own investment. Sounds good to me – I really like it that idea! "Note all companies are not the same" ? Nobody is going to call me out onto the carpet for that one? That has to be the worst subtitle I've ever created for any episode. Well, I'll give you that it is the most dad-like joke I've crafted (I hope)! Things to consider when selecting a note servicing company 1 -Do they service your type of loan? Installment sale: Owner Finance notes/Wraps Mobile Home/Manufactured Housing loans? Multi-Investor Loans (aka Fractionated Loans) 2 - Do they provide additional services that your loan instrument may require? Impound/Escrow services for repair draw payments (not just taxes and insurance) Do they report to any credit bureaus?  3 - What is included with the standard or basic servicing fee? Welcome Letter to Borrower Payment coupons / online payments accepted? How often are payments processed? How long is the clearing period before disbursement of my funds? How are funds transferred? How far into the late notice period before additional fees will be charged? How are payments applied towards an account? Interest first, then additional principle, or any extra to be kept in escrow account? Reporting mortgage interest to the IRS (1098, etc.) 4 - BONUS - Here's a million dollar idea for you: Establish a relationship with your serving company and let them know you want to buy partials to first-lien notes, and/or discounted notes (perhaps non-performing). If they have a customer or associate Also, let them know you want to sell notes and partials to re-capitalize your funds more quickly. You may be able to use the servicing company to help you find not just prospects but real leads, and also sell to their customers or associates. Basically, what I'm saying is do a little legwork and networking. Make an effort to establish relationships and watch the leads come in. Want to know the key to finding and retaining the best agency employees? Looking for ways to find and hire top talent? Your team is your agency's #1 most valuable asset. Turnover and training is difficult and expensive. So in this episode, you'll discover some simple tips to hiring, managing and keeping loyal employees who want to stay and grow with your business. In this episode, we’ll cover: Hiring top agency talent. 3 Steps to developing loyal employees. How to retain talent that wants to grow with your agency. Today I talked with Scott Love, former Navy leadership trainer (thank you for your service) and current high-stakes headhunter. With over two decades experience recruiting professionals, Scott shares some simple tips you can take build and continue to retain your team. You can start implementing his tips immediately and start building a loyal team that will never want to leave. Hiring Top Agency Talent When going through the hiring process the main thing that you want to think of is hiring based outcomes vs. duties and responsibilities. Ask candidates questions on how they have accomplished outcomes in the past and how they will in the future. Once you find someone that exhibits outcomes you’re looking for, remember that there is an emotional context to a potential employee’s decision making process. As they decide to work with you, consider two things: What does your agency have that is unique or distinct? We’re not talking about desirable culture or team collaboration - every agency has those things. But what really makes you different and desirable? How does this uniqueness improve their situation on an emotional/personal level? To help get these two questions answered go into sales mode. (But not “our agency is so great, let me tell you all about us” sales mode!) Try these 2 sales tricks: Ask the candidate about their current situation and current company. Find out their complaints, challenges or problems. Ask what an ideal situation looks like to alleviate their stated concerns? You are trying to find their intrinsic motivations and speak to those… make it about them! BONUS: Here are the 3 core competencies to look for in an eligible candidate: Influence: How do they effectively influence others? Resilience: How do they bounce back from adversity? Achievement: What makes them keep going? 3 Steps to Developing Loyal Employees #1. Make them feel good by being true and sincere. Nothing puts up walls faster than negative comments and/or criticism. #2. Build up their emotional equity. Do this by making them feel like they have a stake in the agency business. (Not a financial stake, but help them feel some ownership of their projects and clients.) #3. Utilize insights and feedback by obtaining cross-departmental ideas. Allow your employees to not only feel like, but also actually BE part of the solution. How to Retain Amazing Employees Meet their needs! Ask yourself how you can help them achieve fulfillment in what it is you are doing as an agency. How can you show them their work makes a difference in your agency’s goal… the noble goal, that goal that goes beyond profit? Find the emotional context of your agency’s goal and then show them how they contribute. Remember: As Agency CEO, you are in the business of leadership. Be followable. Your employees need to trust you, so don’t let allow walls to go up. These two simple exercises will set you on the path of building a loyal team: Get clear on your core values. Get clear on your personal mission. Figure those out first, write them down, then strive to be that person every day. This episode originally aired March 17, 2017. Dave Chisholm may not have been in the comics industry long enough to achieve the 'rock star' status of someone like Jim Lee or Paul Pope, but in terms of creating both comics AND music, he's a band apart from just about every other creator out there. Because when you write and draw your own graphic novel ("Instrumental" from Z2 Comics in May), compose/perform a companion soundtrack to be released simultaneously WITH that graphic novel, AND have another full-length album of music from the band you front being released around the same time (Talking Under Water self-titled debut album on April 28th, 2017) . . . what other label is there? Decide for yourself after listening to this interview, where Greg talks with Dave about process both musical and sequential, the difficulty of getting the essence of sound across a silent medium, and more. Where else could you hear talk about Frank Quitely, Kevin Nowlan, and Brian Eno in the same discussion? And if that wasn't enough, you can hear of clips "Celebration" and "Death and the Narrator" (from "Instrumental"'s upcoming score) in the episode itself, PLUS the full "Celebration" track from the Multiversity Comics episode post page! BONUS: Here are the two other non-"Instrumental" pieces of music mentioned in the episode: "Tossing and Turning" from the Tossing and Turning EP by Talking Under Water   "Calligraphy" from Calligraphy by Dave Chisholm  Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. Alright, I will admit. I was a little skeptical when I first heard of cricket protein. But I also like challenges, so I decided to give it a try. This was over a year ago...My kids were even more reluctant, despite the fact I reassured them that crickets tasted like almonds. However, we had fun trying new cricket recipes and seeing which ones we liked the best. So what in the world would compel me to feed my kids ground up bugs?In this weeks episode with CEO of Crik Nutrition and Tedx speaker Alex Drysdale, you will hear what ultimately convinced me to try these little bundles of protein. If you have tried crickets, please comment below. And I you haven't, comment below why you would be hesitant.Show links:Here's a link to Alex's Tedx talk "It's Time we put Bugs in our Pantry"To learn more about CrikNutrition Protein Shakes, click here. And for 15% off your order, use the PROMO CODE: healbetterfast**Bonus:Here are some creative recipes for use with your cricket protein powder:Cricket Protein Pancakes These pancakes are not only packed full of protein but pretty filling. Step on up to the bar, order a shot and a beer from the tough-as-nails lady wearing the cat sweatshirt, and get ready to embrace your rage, because this month’s clip show is all about the Big Dog. Luke is famous for his temper, so Ann and Christy are here to share some memorable TBTL times when things got … a little heated. Mostly, we try to answer the question, ‘Is Luke a jerk, or the best friend ever?’ Along the way, we break down the original Big Dog story, critique Andrew’s handling of a difficult bartender, and agree that Luke will probably never get a job with the Seattle Bureau of Tourism. Plus, Christy’s dad started an “extreme counseling” business (it involves non-contact taekwondo), and it’s kind of awesome. Here’s a handy list of what we learned: 1) It’s probably not about you 2) When The Mummy is the voice of reason, something has gone terribly wrong 3) Don’t awaken Christy’s righteous fury unless you want your tires slashed 4) NEVER TOUCH THE BOUNCER   Bonus: Here's the episode of Nerd Out Loud where Christy lost her mind with anger.

The theme of our live show in June 2013 was "Insults & Grievances." Folks packed into the Deer Pile—that tiny, gorgeous, sweltering box—listened to their peers tell tales of live beating them down. The story I remember the most vividly from that night came from Greg Salvesen, an economist who loves to run long distances. Back then, Greg recounted his greatest loss, and the damage that it did to him. I'm sharing that story with you today because it's a good prequel to Greg's next story, which he told on July 15, 2015. In the spring of 2015, Greg competed in the granddaddy of all long jogs—the Infinitus, a rugged 888km footrace in the wilds of Vermont. That's right, 888km, over 550 miles in a figure-eight loop. Against all odds, Greg won! Greg shared his new story, along with six other stories on the theme "Take a Hike" on the July 2015 Narrators show. Bonus: Here's the 46-second promotional video for the Infinitus, which is easily the weirdest, most unsettling video for a running race that I've ever seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MhunzpnIYg This story was originally recorded on 18 June 2013 at the Deer Pile in Denver, Colorado and the theme of the evening was "Arguments & Grievances." Hi everyone, we have a great episode for you. We put our two cents into the Kris Bryant discussion. Bottomline, I love him and Todd has more tempered expectations. The world knows about Bryant, but how do you take advantage of this? We suggest some names that you could offer him for if you have already drafted. Buy the rumor, sell the hype. This is the 2020 All-Stars, so we discuss some deeper names that we are looking at in our draft. Which Alex Rios shows up this year? We discuss him for a bit and we actually drafted him in the 4th non-keeper round (192nd pick). Editors note, we really underestimated how far pitchers would fall this year. Man, we thought Paxton could be a 20th rounder and he went in the 23rd round. Want a real deep-leaguer? Toni Cingrani middle reliever! We annoint him Johnny Venters 2.0. Next, we have a mini-closerpocalypse session. What do y’all think of Brett Cecil? We like him and I hope he does well, because we got him in the 3rd non-keeper round (180th). We basically drafted half the guys that we talked about. So hopefully we’re right on these guys.
