In 2015, as governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney's ‘Tragedy of the Horizons' speech made waves in the global climate community. It was seen as a landmark call for the financial sector to recognize the costs of climate breakdown. But fast forward 10 years and a fierce debate is swirling around whether Carney is living up to that warning. Since becoming Prime Minister, he's scrapped the consumer carbon tax, froze EV mandates and paved the way for a potential new pipeline to the B.C. coast. With a Trudeau-era environment minister resigning from Carney's cabinet in protest, we're asking the question: has Mark Carney betrayed the climate movement? Or is he playing a strategic long game that aims for an environmental win?Two writers from Canada's National Observer, Ottawa Bureau Chief John Woodside and Calgary-based lead columnist Max Fawcett, join the show to take up that debate. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

December kicks off with a recap of the visit of a far-left member of the Canadian Senate who tried to tour the in-progress 'sobering centre' that Wab Kinew's NDP is opening at 190 Disraeli. Kim Pate - who represents Ontario- dismissed the idea that Winnipeg residents need protection from out of control meth and alcohol addicts.Part 1- A hard drive failure interrupted podcast production in late November but Episode 57 is here to get our public affairs coverage back on track. We're looking to top up the Season 6 fundraising campaign with another $1000 this month to get a head start on paying for web hosting and the ActionLine Wordpress template in 2026, and to provide a Christmas bonus to our volunteer production staff. To contribute, contact martygoldlive@gmail.com. 15.30 Part 2- Legalist Kim Pate has a long history of standing up for prisoners -especially women- involved with Canada's justice system. But when it comes to the women and general public who have endured years of harassment, abuse and violence at the hands of Winnipeg's criminally-inclined homeless addicts, she says the rights of the abusers comes before the rights of the public to a safe community. A clue why she spouts such nonsense comes from a 2017 interview, after Justin Trudeau handed her a taxpayer-funded lifetime job in the Senate: I've gone back to the call from the prime minister several times in my mind. He said he was offering this appointment based on my career as an activist. That was the word that stuck in my head: “activism.” So I thought, “Okay, well, let's go.” https://broadview.org/senator-kim-pate-wants-canada-to-get-rid-of-jails/Marty Gold explains the chicken-and-egg argument Pate hides behind to bolster her argument that "to actually put people in what can only be described as cells… I think it's rifefor a Charter challenge."Warding off arsons, robberies, thefts, vandalism, matters not to Pate. She thinks the detention process might "traumatize" the addicts, and seemingly offered no comment to the Free Press about the years of trauma inflicted on women, children, families, property owners, employees, theatre patrons, transit riders and others by the anti-social and violent behavior of the homeless encampment crowd. 30.30 -The attempt to visit the site on Friday exposed a broken promise by Wab Kinew.Remember it was supposed to open within two weeks of the Legislation being passed? Listen to a media scrum on November 14th when Premier Kinew had to admit the sobering centre would not, in fact, open in November- and why. Only APTN reported on it, why is that? The split between the hard core “harm reduction” activists and the harm reduction-friendly Manitoba NDP shows how out of touch the radical defenders of lawless violent addicts are.39.15 Part 3- a brief discussion of why democracy at City Hall is being eroded by poor practices, including bogus public consultations, late publication of meeting agendas and the 5 minute time limit on speakers. Time and again, some councillors go the extra mile to hear from a wide range of constituents, while others treat hearing from the public as a nuisance. Here's hoping things improve in the new year, with an election on the horizon.******Have you read our recent columns in the Winnipeg Sun?Nov 23- Kinew, feds still shroud drug consumption site proposals in secrecyhttps://winnipegsun.com/opinion/gold-kinew-feds-still-shroud-drug-consumption-site-proposals-in-secrecy Nov 25- As the temperature drops, anger rises about transit revamp https://winnipegsun.com/opinion/gold-as-the-temperature-drops-anger-rises-about-transit-revampNov 30- Too little, too late: Winnipeg Transit faces a record year of violencehttps://winnipegsun.com/opinion/gold-too-little-too-late-winnipeg-transit-faces-a-record-year-of-violence

In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on November 28th, 2025, your hosts start with the biggest story of the week before veering off into a surprisingly long but very entertaining tangent about seafood and the possible unsustainability of our entire civilization. Trust us, it's a good one. They do eventually get to the Memorandum of Understanding signed this week between Ottawa and Alberta. Both hosts agree it ended up being a solid week for Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. They also wonder whether it somehow turned into a good week for Steven Guilbeault, who is now out of Carney's cabinet. Did Guilbeault's decision to walk away mark the moment more Liberals finally realized the Trudeau era is really, truly over? Matt also notes that Carney can't keep offering everyone carrots; sooner or later, someone is going to need to get the stick. And he names the province he thinks should be made example of ... to encourage the others, of course. From there, the conversation shifts to Matt's recent trip to the Halifax International Security Forum. He's working on a series of columns about it that will begin rolling out soon, but he shares a few early stories — all circling the theme of America having ghosted the world, and how some Americans, bless them, still think this is something they can fix quickly after a midterm or the next election. Matt isn't convinced. He also has a few thoughts about the relative cleanliness of some Canadian cities he has visited lately. Halifax, you're looking good. All that and more in the latest episode of The Line Podcast.

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the political implications of Prime Minister Mark Carney's pipeline deal with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. They debate whether Carney's leadership represents a fundamental shift in Liberal politics or simply a "new personality cult" in light of his reversal of various Trudeau-era policies. They also cover what his centre-right positioning on different issues is a challenge for Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives. In the second half, they explore the complex conditions embedded in the Carney-Smith pipeline agreement, including whether a private sector proponent will step forward and and industrial carbon pricing's future impact on Canadian competitiveness. The Canadian consensus on immigration cratered last year. In the fall of 2024, an Environics poll found that for the first time in a quarter century most Canadians felt there was too much immigration. Under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, the country experienced one of the biggest periods of immigration growth in its history, but after the shift in public opinion, the Liberal government reversed course. Despite big reductions to immigration levels, most Canadians still think rates are too high.Today, The Decibel is looking at how Canada's relationship with immigration significantly changed, what it's meant for the country and the people who have immigrated to it, and where we go from here.Tony Keller, Globe columnist and author of Borderline Chaos: How Canada Got Immigration Right, and Then Wrong, will walk us through what motivated Trudeau's dramatic changes to the immigration system and how they impacted the country. And then, Rupa Banerjee, professor and Canada Research Chair in Economic inclusion, Employment and Entrepreneurship of Canada's Immigrants, will explain the effect that whiplash-like changes to the system have had on recent immigrants and our economy.Questions? After meeting on the sidelines of the G20 in South Africa, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced they would restart trade talks. It's a long way from where the two countries have been for the last several years. Relations blew up in 2023 after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused agents of India's government of being involved in the murder of a Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Then, last year, the RCMP publicly accused such agents of being involved in a campaign of homicides, extortions and threats targeting the South Asian community on Canadian soil. Recently, the director of CSIS suggested that the problem hasn't gone away.In B.C.'s Lower Mainland, over 100 reports of extortion were made in the last year. Two CBC reporters who have been covering this issue give us a closer look at what exactly has been happening on the ground in Canada, particularly when it comes to extortion, who might be behind it, and how this all connects to the larger context of a thawing relationship with India.Baneet Braich is based out of Abbotsford, B.C. Greg Marchildon speaks with Ron Graham about his book, The Coutts Diaries: Power, Politics, and Pierre Trudeau 1973-1981. Jim Coutts, principal secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau from 1975 to 1981, was one of the most powerful men in Canada during those tumultuous years. Equally admired and attacked, respected and reviled, he was, in the words of one contemporary journalist, “a political phenomenon such as Canada has never known before: Machiavelli masquerading as a cherub.” The man who “exercised more backroom power than anyone else in modern Canadian political history,” Coutts not only knew everyone and saw everything at the centre of the action, he wrote it all down. Now, for the first time, his secret diaries have been edited into a single volume that offers an astonishing, behind-the-scenes look into public events and private lives during some of the most dramatic years in Canadian history. Ron Graham is an author and journalist based in Toronto. He has written extensively over many decades on Canadian politics, history, religion, business, and culture.
