On the Mount Rushmore of the UK Anime Community, the Anime Freshmen have rightly earned our place as trailblazers, and the annual AF Freshie Awards continue to lead the way, much like Rock Lock set the standard for the term 'useless power' in My Hero Academia. We once again take a look at this year's Crunchyroll Anime Awards and give it that London twist, with our brother Big Miko pulling up and getting involved in the chaotic analysis that we hold near and dear to our hearts. Nuff bants with bro. Come through! Every effort is made to keep spoilers to a minimum. (The only exception being older titles)
Anime – the Japanese cartoons that were once a little-known, niche entertainment form for the nerd set – have become increasingly popular in the U.S. and have crossed over into mainstream pop culture and entertainment. The anime film The Boy and the Heron took home last year's Academy Award for Best Animated Film and anime characters Goku from Dragon Ball and Luffy from One Piece appeared as balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.Meanwhile, celebrities from Megan Thee Stallion and Ariana Grande to Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Reynolds have expressed their anime fandom and incorporated it within their own art forms. And streaming services such as Crunchyroll have made anime more accessible to U.S. audiences than ever before. As National Anime Day approaches on April 15 – a day that celebrates the anime art form and its impact on pop culture – the podcast Crunchyroll Presents: The Anime Effect provides a gateway for the anime curious to enter the wide world of the medium. This week, Nigel and Tazziii upgrade their operating systems to metaphysical levels for a dive deep into Spike Jonze's scarily accurate Her (starting at 26:52), with Comic Creator Nathan Hawthorne and Community & Member Engagement Lead Sara Veal as guests.Even over a decade old, we discuss how relevant this story is to today's world post mass ChatGPT adoption. Even in its pastel tones, it manages to capture our growing dependence on AI companions from a professional and relational level...but does it work as a narrative beyond its foreshadowing? We examine its surprisingly human themes of moving past the pain of breakups, loneliness in a technologically connected world, and what our relationship with AI means for our relationships with the flesh-and-blood people around us, debating which themes about what makes love special for humans resonate effectively. This week's storytelling tip is about creating a meaningful job role for your protagonist.Other stories we're enjoying include: Wild Card: Let the Tarot Tell Your Story (Book), You (Netflix), It Takes Two (Xbox), Dr Stone (Crunchyroll), Beastars: Final Season Part 1 (Netflix), Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Crunchyroll), Campfire Cooking in Another World (Crunchyroll), The Witch Hat Atelier (Manga), The Apothecary Diaries (Manga & Crunchyroll), Vinland Saga (Netflix), Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+), South of Midnight (Xbox), Sinners (Cinema).Connect with Nathan online:Website: https://www.hawthornearts.comTwitter: https://x.com/hawthorneartsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hawthorneartsConnect with Sara online:Twitter: https://twitter.com/digitalbruhahaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/digitalbruhaha and https://www.instagram.com/sirena.curiosa

In this episode we dive into Gate part 1 an isekai that take a different approach to the usually genre and it was a recommendation from "Elf Daddy Girl Issues" and "Danner536". This anime certainly doesn't pull it's punches on how things would likely go when a you pit medieval against modern military dishing out some “f around and find out” pretty much through the whole story. A little more than decade ago, Travis Page was hauling gear off a tour bus, criss-crossing the country with indie bands. One late night, sweat-soaked and exhausted, he noticed fans waiting in the rain simply to glimpse their favourite artist. Passion like that ought to power a business, he thought. That backstage epiphany still guides him as CFO of Crunchyroll, the world's largest anime platform. After the music industry's 2007 crash, Page hit reset—trading road cases for a Wharton MBA and, soon after, a seat at Barclays Capital. Covering entertainment firms during the Lehman-to-Barclays transition gave him, he laughs, “a five-year education in two.” The intensity paid seemed to pay off: at 30, he was head of finance at Remark Media, then a corporate-development deal maker at Demand Media.Sony Pictures Entertainment came calling next. Page helped stitch together seven anime acquisitions, culminating in Funimation's purchase and, later, the Crunchyroll merger. When Sony needed a strategic CFO to scale the nascent service, his boss put his name forward—before even asking him. He accepted on the spot.Today, Crunchyroll counts “over 15 million subscribers in 200 countries,” Page tells us, triple the total since the 2021 merger. His playbook pairs disciplined capital allocation with fan-first intuition: license or co-produce 99 percent of content in Japan, then “explode” each franchise across streaming, film, and consumer products. Finance's role? Embedded FP&A analysts sit in strategy off-sites, ensuring every creative gamble lands on a sound financial stage—just like those fans waiting in the rain taught him years ago.

This week we dive into the second season of Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. The story largely just continues on with Maple and her guild, Maple Tree, continue exploring new levels and content in the game they play, New World Online. Maple continues to stick to her strategy of only maxing out her defense stat, continually stumbling upon overpowered, game-breaking skills that baffle the game's developers despite the fact that they were the ones that put them in. In this episode, we talked all about Code Geass Season 2. We dug into how it picks up right after the Season 1 cliffhanger, with Lelouch living a normal school life until his memories come back and he jumps right back into leading the Black Knights. Things quickly go from a local rebellion to full-blown global war. We also revisited out discussion on how Lelouch's Geass works, especially its limits as a result of that some of that talk got a little off-track. But overall, we both agreed Season 2 tied up a lot of loose ends from the first season and delivered a strong finish. Although Jack docked it a point for some gaps and unanswered questions. All in all it was a solid watch, well worth your time, especially if you liked Season 1.Next Week's Pick: "Bofuri Season 2" Have you had the chance to watch Code: Geass Season 2 or any of our previous selections?
