This week, I was delighted to be joined by two New York Times best-selling novelists who happen to live right here in Arizona & both of whom I met through Barbara Peters' wonderful world-famous independent Poisoned Pen Bookshop in Scottsdale. Jenn McKinlay is the award-winning bestselling author of several mystery & romance series & her work has been translated into multiple languages & in countries all over the world. Hard at work on her next books, Jenn's latest releases include LOVE AT FIRST BOOK, FONDANT FUMBLE, & her upcoming holiday-themed mystery A MERRY LITTLE MURDER PLOT is available on October 8. Paige Shelton had a nomadic childhood, as her father's job as a football coach took the family to seven different towns before she was twelve years old. After college at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Paige moved to Salt Lake City, where she thought she'd only stay a few years, but she fell in love with the mountains & a great guy who became her husband. In 2015, her family moved to Arizona. In addition to the SCOTTISH BOOKSHOP MYSTERIES, she also writes the ALASKA WILD book series which began with THIN ICE. Her other series include the FARMERS' MARKET, COOKING SCHOOL, & DANGEROUS TYPE mysteries. PERFECT STORM, the sixth ALASKA WILD series title will be out on December 3, 2024, & WRITTEN IN STONE, the 10th SCOTTISH BOOKSHOP mystery is coming to stores on April 1, 2025.Given that not only do Jenn & Paige adore libraries & indie bookstores like Poisoned Pen but they also write mysteries set in bookshops, the idea of doing an episode centered on our love of books, movies, & bookshop movies seemed like a perfect fit! Warm, breezy, funny, & fast-paced, in addition to discussing the films DESK SET, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, & YOU'VE GOT MAIL, this wide-ranging episode touches on everything from their love of literature to the writing process itself. I had the best time with the prolific & insightful Jenn & Paige & you're sure to love our conversation as well.Originally Posted on Patreon (10/2/24) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/113178419Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi

This week, the Dames are going to work with three great comedies about women in the workplace. Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy star in Desk Set (1957); Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton team up against their terrible boss in 9 to 5 (1980); and Melanie Griffith squares off against Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl (1988).

Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Our Sam has returned! Join us as we partake of this lovely holiday confection featuring the timeless cinematic legends Spencer Tracey and Katharine Hepburn. Released in 1957, it was their first film after a five year hiatus, their first film in color, and it is also their penultimate film. While it may not have enjoyed the gushing reviews when it was released like their earlier films, Desk Set has aged well and is a resounding favorite for filmgoers looking for that perfect interlude between Thanksgiving and the New Year. Witty dialogue and beautiful art direction adorn this piece, and there are some subtle and insightful observations and predictions of the rapidly changing landscapes of mid- twentieth century business through the impact of technological evolution. This episode we cap off our discussion with our own musings about AI with some interesting takes. The show opened with Steve explaining the concept of “clear-channel” radio, and why WGN radio in Chicago is heard, at night, in almost 40 U.S. states and in Canada. After a quick chat about the classic films The Desk Set, and Fritz Lang's epic Metropolis, Tom, Steve and Johnnie discussed the ongoing UAW strike, and comments made Monday by Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford. We also learned from Steve what a “seat cover” is in CB-radio parlance. In the second segment Steve and Johnnie talked about their best and worst car ownership experiences. Tom also noted the love/hate relationship he had with a 1991 Saab 9000 CD. In the third segment Steve and Johnnie are subjected to Tom's “1990!” quiz. Steve and Johnie wrapped up the show sharing some good news about Genesis Connected Services.

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this totally '80s installment marks my 89th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. This installment, titled "Forever Freestyle," celebrates probably the broadest timeline covered by my classic and current collections, featuring material from every decade between 1930 and 2020. My Fuzzy Feature highlights the 1980s miniseries, network series and the 2009 reboot of "V," including a contemporary clip from my "TV is the New Reading" podcast. I track some Cross Connections through the casts of the original and the reboot such as Jossverse connections to Morena Baccarin, Alan Tudyk and Gina Torres and original series connections through Michael Mantell and Richard T. Jones. A flashback episode of "My Name is Earl" featured an appearance by long-acknowledged Golden Thread Beau Bridges as Carl Hickey. And several arterial connections showed up in "Mercy" including Michelle Trachtenberg, Jane Mulgrew and Elisabeth Moss; "Boston Legal" including Jane Lynch, Megan Mullally and Prime Connector Stephen Tobolowsky with William Shatner, Rene Auberjonois and Armin Shimerman. In my Classic Collection, cataloging discs 1476 through 1500, I encountered an ad for a two-disc set packed with '80s dance hits called "Forever Freestyle." You can see the ad here: https://youtu.be/ZDNlUl706Ls Based on finding it in my collection I added the songs in that compilation to my music collection. Also, I found one of two German-language episodes of "Monty Python's Fliegende Zirkus," the Bravo rebroadcast of "Six Feet Under" episode "Eat a Peach," and a Lexus ad featuring some brilliant stage-management tagged "The safest accident is the one that never happens." You can see that one here: https://youtu.be/Xw3-hOE3l8M Plus comments on "Hamlet 2," "The Prisoner," "The Ninth Gate," "CATS," "The Riches," "Fringe," Ellen hosting the Oscars, a documentary on the 2008 presidential election called "By the People: The Election of Barack Obama" and the 1952 movie "Desk Set." In my Current Collection I talk about the "BoJack Horseman" finale and connections between that and the final season of "Six Feet Under." Also, comments on "Quantumania," "Soup to Nuts," "Michael Shayne, Private Eye" and the third season premiere of "Only Murders in the Building." In What I've Been Watching, comments on "Elemental," "Barbie" and "Grace & Frankie," as well as "Project Runway" and "Crime Scene Kitchen." And in my streaming selections, I took in the series premiere of Nathan Pyle's "Strange Planet" on Apple TV. Fun show! Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Louis Gossett Jr., Legendary Actor, Author & Humanitarian About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Louis Gossett Jr., is one of our most beloved and respected actors, who's been thrilling audiences with his iconic performances since he first conquered Broadway at the age of 17 in “Take a Giant Step”, followed by “The Desk Set”, “Golden Boy”, “The Zulu and the Zayda”, and “My Sweet Charlie”.     He also starred on Broadway in “A Raisin in the Sun”, and then made his film debut in the 1961 movie adaptation of the play.   His unforgettable portrayal of “Fiddler” in the groundbreaking miniseries “Roots” earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding lead actor.  And of course, who can ever forget him as Sgt. Emil Foley in “An Officer and a Gentleman”, for which he won the 1983 Academy Award AND Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Black actor to win in that category.     Besides his Emmy Award for Roots, he got 7 more Emmy Award nominations for his work in “The Sentry Collection Presents Ben Vereen: His Roots”, “Backstairs at the White House”, “Palmerstown, USA”, “A Gathering of Old Men”, “Touched By an Angel”, “Watchmen” and “Sadat”, for which he was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award.  And he got another Golden Globe Award nomination for his performance in “The Josephine Baker Story”.    He's had 3 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, and won the award for Best Children's Special, for “In His Father's Shoes”.  He's been nominated 6 times for NAACP Image Awards and won twice.  And in 1992, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.   Very soon, we will all get to see him in his latest role, as “Mister” in the musical film version of “The Color Purple”.    In addition to his illustrious acting career, our guest is an accomplished writer, producer, director and musician – and perhaps most importantly, he's a social activist, educator and humanitarian, dedicated to eliminating racism and fighting injustice wherever it exists, in all its forms.   In 2010 he released his riveting memoir entitled "An Actor and a Gentleman," chronicling not only the many triumphs of his monumental career, but also the heartbreaking and sometimes insurmountable obstacles he confronted and overcame as a working actor, and especially as a Black man in America.   In 2006, he founded The Eracism Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating racism, fostering cultural diversity, historical enrichment, education and anti-violence initiatives. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/

Librarians for the King County Library System share their picks for the best aviation, space, and flight-related stories to read this summer. Check out their recommendations for your aerospace summer reading list! This week we sit down with Britta Barrett and Emily Caulkins from the King County Library System—which is the top library in the nation for circulating eBooks and downloads—to discuss their top picks for summer reading that include aviation and space-related themes. Britta and Emily also host their own podcast for the library titled Desk Set, which can be accessed on Spotify, Stitcher, and the KCLS website. Emily’s excitement for these recommendations stems from the notion that the early days of flight are a natural fit for great stories, “with its inherent risk, human ingenuity, and bravery.” Her first pick is West with the Night by Beryl Markham, a bush pilot from South Africa who was the first to fly east to west across the Atlantic in 1936. She crash-landed in New Foundland, but her flight still made history. The graphic novel Night Witches features detail, visceral illustrations that tell the story of Soviet women pilots during WWII who performed risky aerial maneuvers during combat missions against German troops. And the book Code Name Verity focuses on British women pilots during WWII who help the RAF, and its vivid prose captures “the exhilaration of the feeling of flying” as the characters fly in early model bi-planes. Britta who dreams of being the first librarian in space, recommends some space-themed titles, like Tilly Walden’s On a Sunbeam, which explores how two girls who meet in an outer-space boarding school cope with love and loss. The book Laika tells the story of the first dog to go to space and the nationalistic fervor that led to his significant role in the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States. Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti shows how what makes someone different, unique, or even an outcast can help them survive. You can read all of these this summer for King County Library System’s “A Universe of Reading” summer reading program! Check out King County Library system here and the Desk Set podcast to get excited for your summer of aerospace reading!
