How to Scale Your Recruitment Business While Becoming the Employer of Choice, with Joe Curtis, Ep #185

Fostering a workplace where everyone wants to work can translate to positive employer branding. This is a critical factor if you wish to build your recruitment business to scale.   Joe Curtis, my special guest, will tell us how they can launch and scale recruitment companies while building those as businesses that people want to work for. The first recruitment business Joe and his cofounders built, 3Search, launched in 2014, and currently employs 40 people. With the successful scaling of 3Search, Joe turned his attention to building the 11 Investments Group, now at 100 heads, with 6 recruitment companies within the group.   In this episode, Joe shared his insights on they are able to have 900+ 5-star Google Reviews across their group, which is phenomenal for a recruitment company. We also discussed the value of diversity and inclusivity, as well as his take on the work-from-home and hybrid setup which is a recently hot topic.   Episode Outline and Highlights [02:27] Joe's recruiter and investor journey: How he left Michael Page and started his boutique firm. [06:41] Strategies for investing in startups instead of growing capital for the original business.  [13:27] Turning mistakes into learning opportunities - Joe revealed their biggest learnings and how they use them to help new startups invest in their holding. [22:35] Having a shared vision and working well with co-founders. [31:00] What it takes to be recognized as a Great Place to Work. [38:49] Zooming in on inclusivity and behavior-based hiring. [47:45] Discussion on the hybrid and work-from-home setting.   Critical Components When Launching and Scaling Recruitment Businesses   Joe co-founded his first recruitment business, 3Search, in 2014 which currently employs 40 people. With the successful scaling of 3Search, Joe turned his attention to building the 11 Investments Group, now at 100 heads. I wanted to pick his brains on the core components needed to build and scale a recruitment business.    From a strategic point of view, Joe tells the story of why they invested in startups.  “Because we didn't want a multi-discipline business. We wanted a group of specialists,” he continued, “we champion small business, we champion entrepreneurship. and growth of small companies. And we have a platform that enables significant ownership to the guys that come in and found the businesses with us. We know how to scale and grow a recruitment business today in 2023, and we bring in founders who know their market well.”   What does the roadmap look like when it comes to scaling a recruitment business? Joe explained how they use an investment model to adapt to the market. He also mentioned how important it is to be hands-on. You will also hear strategies for handling operational tasks such as accounting and marketing on a centralized approach. Most importantly, Joe also shared the mistakes and learnings that they had to take for the past 9 years and how they are leveraging them to help out recruitment businesses investing in their group.   Running a Recruitment Business with Multiple Co-Owners   Running a recruitment business with multiple co-owners can be challenging for several reasons such as decision-making, division of responsibilities, and communication. But what I think is most common is the lack of a shared vision. Leaders can have different ideas of what they're trying to accomplish. What advice would Joe give to recruitment business owners who are working with multiple or other partners? He discussed the following two key principles:   Having an articulated vision in the short, medium, and long term. Constantly talk about what you are doing and building.   As Joe describes it, “And these days, you know, we don't spend an awful lot of time together as a three talking about stuff, making decisions. So if you're not careful, you can start planning the future. on your own and then one of the others is planning a slightly different future. And as you kind of, as time goes on, those plans get further and further and further apart. So it's important to keep talking about what we're building.”   Creating a Business That People Want to Work For   Recently featured in The Sunday Times, Best Places to Work 2023, 11investment's efforts have been recognized among the top-rated employers. This is an amazing feat, especially in the recruitment industry. Joe and his partners recognized that “hiring people is going to be hard in the recruitment industry and keeping people was going to be hard in their doing what we're doing.” They took proactive steps to ensure that they retain their valuable talents.   Joe revealed the things that they are doing differently to foster an environment where people want to work. “This employer brand we're building is all based around us really striving to provide the best benefits package we possibly can as a holistic package for people. It's really important that we consider everybody's needs collectively rather than just paying as much commission as we possibly can or having an amazing holiday benefit or, yeah, we're trying to put everything together. So we do have an amazing commission structure, I believe. We do have a good holiday. We've got unlimited holidays… The goal is to provide the best environment we possibly can that enables everybody to flourish both professionally and personally.”   We also discussed topics relating to hybrid and work-from-home setups, as well as what it takes to become a B-Corp-certified company.    Our Sponsors   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro    i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Malcolm Dydo, the Director and Co-Founder of Freedom Within Project. In this conversation, Ashanti's passion for working with youth is equaled by Malcolm's drive to create environments that allow the incarcerated population to heal. Recorded on the eve of Father's Day weekend, Malcolm holds space for Ashanti as he shares his perspective on the holiday. (1:55) Ashanti's introduction. (6:42) Malcolm introduces himself, his work supporting the incarcerated population, and his belief in the collective's ability to heal. (11:48) Malcolm shares the front of his mask - competent, smart, caring. He shares how these positive elements of himself are motivated by some of his wounded elements. (14:33) Ashanti shares the front of his mask - funny, serious, hard-working. He then breaks down how these traits affect his interpersonal dynamics while working. (19:43) Malcolm shares how the concept of emotional masks plays a role in the incarcerated populations he works with, and how understanding the duality of the front and back of the mask is important. (23:33) Malcolm shares the back of his mask - ashamed, afraid, inadequate. Ashanti shares - fear of failure, Father's Day is hard, sadness about… (26:28) Malcolm and Ashanti look at Father's Day from a perspective outside of the traditional holiday, and Ashanti digs deep into his past with a story about his mother and her husband at the time. (35:18) Malcolm looks back at his childhood, and how wounds from his 1st-grade self continue to impact him today. (38:58) Ashanti and Malcolm take time to honor the front of the mask, and how it functions as a protective shield for us as we navigate different spaces. (42:54) Malcolm likens his and Ashanti's work to “moving at the speed of trust” and creating a “laboratory of humanity”. He and Ashanti explore these metaphors. (50:58) Malcolm and Ashanti reflect on how the work of Ever Forward is connected to the work of Freedom from Within. Both organizations support men's capacity to have internal and external dialogues. (54:48) Malcolm shares some final thoughts, and how the conversation conjures up the faces of the men he works with. Get your Masters in meteorology and then go to Broadway.  Maybe not the most common path, but when you have multiple passions, work hard, and take leaps of faith, the most wonderful things can happen.  Today's guest, Alvin Hough Jr., graduated grad school, then through an inspiring chain of events, is now associate music director at Tina: The Tina Turner Musical on Broadway, as well as a husband and father of two.  Additionally, he is one of the founding members of MUSE: Musicians United for Social Equity.   An organization in its infancy already helping others and affecting change in the musical theater community and beyond, “MUSE is committed to creating diversity within the music departments of the theatre industry by providing access, internships, mentorships, and support to historically marginalized people of color.” (from their website, link below). Alvin has a contagious enthusiasm for making the theater a more inclusive place and extending opportunities to those with limited resources. His resume is filled, and it got that way because of his dedication and hard work to his craft, as well as always showing respect to those around him.  He emphasizes always doing your best--you never know who is watching.  And that very thing led to him getting the call to be music director of Once on This Island on Broadway. Alvin's chat is quotable, inspiring, and invigorating.  Such a story of following your passions, embracing the adventure of the journey, and looking beyond yourself to help others.  Alvin mentions multiple times the importance of sharing your knowledge and story-- being open-minded, connecting, and lifting up others. I am so excited for you to hear from Alvin.  Afterward, be sure to check out MUSE and the strides they are making already-- from workshops to networking events to an online directory of artists and more.   Thank you for what you do to bring goodness to the world, Alvin! Dan Seaver is the Executive Director and a co-founder of ManifestWorks. After a career in journalism and government, Dan spent a decade as a youth advocate while volunteering with kids incarcerated in Los Angeles County. ManifestWorks is a response to that experience, a solution to the problem of system-impacted people blocked from their potential. ManifestWorks is an incredible immersive program that connects those impacted by foster care, homelessness and incarceration with job opportunities in entertainment. Through learning, real-world work experience, and a network of supportive professional mentors, ManifestWorks provides ongoing life and professional skills to support long-term success. I’ve been fortunate enough to volunteer with he program for about two years. I’ve attended two of the classes and spoken tot he students, helped them learn networking skills, explained what an indie film producer does. I love that this program exists and while Dan is not a producer, he advocates for producers since they are the ones with hiring power in producer. I wanted to shine a light the program and how we can lift up people up by showing them that their dreams in Hollywood can become a reality. Tune in as we discuss humility, hustle and hard work.

My guest in this episode is Colin Murphy. Colin is the Director & Co Founder of a real estate firm called Torcana which buys, renovates and sells high cash flowing rental properties in Tampa Florida. Aside from being the in house “number cruncher” for Torcana, Colin spends most of his time bidding on property auctions, organizing direct mail campaigns, networking with local wholesalers and promoting their products to out of state and overseas investors. Colin started out in 2004 selling advertising space in real estate magazines and exhibitions in the UK & Ireland. It gave him a great insight into the industry as he was constantly meeting and pitching business to experienced professionals. In 2009 he set up Torcana.com with two friends the goal of offering marketing services to sellers of completed, tenanted and cash flow positive deals in the state of Florida. He started out in Orlando and moved onto St. Petersburg & Jacksonville before focusing more intensely in Tampa Bay from 2014 onwards. In 2015 Torcana purchased and renovated 28 single family homes. In 2016 we did over 70 properties and in 2017  are set to exceed 100 properties. Most of these are one story single family homes which they bought, renovated and sold "rent ready" to out of state and overseas investors seeking strong cash flowing rentals. They also add properties to their own rental portfolio on a regular basis. Their primary goal is to find ways of putting both their own funds and those of trusted clients to productive use without taking unnecessary risks.
