Wenn Gabi Elmer-Freuler morgens um fünf Uhr den Stall betritt, warten 43 Kühe darauf, gemolken zu werden. Zwölf Schweine möchten gefüttert – und natürlich gekrault werden. Später wird Käse gemacht, gemistet, geputzt und wieder gemolken. Bis am Abend um 22 Uhr reiht sich eine Arbeit an die nächste. Seit zehn Sommern verbringt Gabi Elmer-Freuler gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann Christian die Alpsaison auf der Alp Empächli oberhalb von Elm. Aus der frischen Milch entstehen hier rund 900 Laibe Alpkäse sowie Mutschli und Glarner Alpkäse AOP. Damit aus Milch ein hochwertiger Käse wird, braucht es viel Erfahrung, sauberes Arbeiten und höchste Sorgfalt – jeden einzelnen Tag. Doch der Musikwelle Brunch zeigt noch eine andere Seite der Älplerin. Gabi kennt jede ihrer Kühe. Sie merkt sofort, wenn es einer nicht gut geht. Beim Melken wird nicht einfach gearbeitet – sie beobachtet, fühlt und hört hin. Beim Käsen wird jeder Handgriff zum Ritual. Harmonie, sagt sie, sei wichtig. Sie zeichnet mit dem Käselab eine liegende Acht in die Milch, lebt bewusst im Hier und Jetzt und vertraut oft auch auf die Kraft der Homöopathie. Dabei spricht sie offen über das Leben auf der Alp. Darüber, was ihr sprichwörtlich manchmal «stinkt», warum sie den Duft des Stalls trotzdem liebt, weshalb sie am Abend müde, aber glücklich ins Bett fällt – und warum sie sich nach einem intensiven Alpsommer ebenso auf den Herbst im Tal freut. Denn unten wartet ein ganz anderer Beruf auf sie: Als ComeS-Therapeutin begleitet sie Menschen mit derselben Ruhe, Aufmerksamkeit und Achtsamkeit, die sie auch auf der Alp lebt. Kling, Jr. is an independent researcher focusing on the western theater of the American Revolutionary War. His books include The Battle of St. Louis, the Attack on Cahokia, and the American Revolutionary War in the West; Cavalry in the Wilderness: Cavalry in the Western Theater of the American Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War; James Colbert and His Chickasaw Legacy; The American Revolutionary War in the West; and An Underappreciated Victory: Bernardo de Gálvez's Mississippi River Campaign Against the British in 1779. He was the primary historical consultant for the 2021 Mid-American Emmy award-winning House of Thunder documentary on the Battle of St. Louis. He is the past curator of the American Revolutionary War in the West museum exhibition at the St. Charles, Missouri Heritage Museum. Currently, he is the curator for the newly opened Gálvez and Louisiana in the American Revolution exhibition at the Louisiana State Cabildo Museum in New Orleans based on his latest book. He will be the featured speaker at the State Historical Society of Missouri's History on Elm series on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.  Kling is a frequent speaker on the western theater of the American Revolutionary War being featured on C-SPAN, The American Revolution Institute in Washington, D. C. lecture series, as well as making presentations at the Missouri History Museum, the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, the Friends of the Cabildo, and at numerous history conference and historical society meetings. Mr. Kling is a descendant of Joseph Robidoux III who was a soldier in the Spanish militia that defended St. Louis when it was attacked by British-led forces in 1780 during the American Revolutionary War.

To help teams meet the need for rigorous evaluation methods, a research team in the SEI's AI Division led by Violet Turri has developed the Evaluating Large Language Models (ELM) library, which is built on best practices for LLM evaluation and benchmarking. In the latest episode from the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute, Turri sits down with Katie Robinson, a design researcher also in the SEI's AI division, to discuss the ELM library, which turns evaluation from an ad-hoc process into a repeatable, extensible framework.

The key insight is that guardrails don't live in prompts ("never do this" gets ignored constantly), they live in the code itself — invariants and automated feedback loops that catch the AI when it strays, rather than instructions it will cheerfully disregard.The conversation widens into what the AI era means for software quality and trust. Both are wary of the coming wave of AI-generated "slop" — buggy, mediocre software produced at scale — but Richard makes the counterintuitive case that competitive pressure might actually force quality up: if everything is slop, the products that aren't will stand out hard. Anjana draws a parallel to consumer electronics brand trust: just like we pay a premium for the USB-C cable we know won't cause a fire, developers and users will increasingly gravitate toward names and communities they can vouch for.
