Panning for Gold in Bigfoot CountryA lifelong outdoorsman from a Texas cattle-ranch background (former pro rodeo rider, music teacher, avid camper, fisherman, hiker, and fossil/rock collector) recounts two eerie, unexplained experiences that ultimately convinced him Bigfoot is real. While renting a remote 26-acre cabin outside Kerrville, Texas, he regularly fed local wildlife. For several nights he heard loud slapping/banging on the cabin walls; one night the impact was so violent it shook pictures on the wall beside his bed. His dogs were terrified. A trail camera later captured a large, shadowy face peering through the brush exactly where the noises occurred. Around the same time, a reported Bigfoot sighting happened just eight miles away. After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, he had a similar feeling of being watched while alone with his dogs on the remote Holy Ghost Trail (an area locals call haunted); the dogs bolted back to the Jeep in fear. In March 2021, during a solo gold-panning trip to Willow Creek in the Santa Fe National Forest, he discovered a set of enormous fresh footprints paralleling the creek—16 inches long, 5 inches wide, with a 4.5-foot stride. His dogs froze, staring into the brush; he felt intensely watched. He measured and photographed the prints (with his foot for scale) before racing back to his truck. Subsequent research revealed dozens of Bigfoot reports in both the Texas Hill Country and northern New Mexico locations where he had lived and hiked, including one near his old cabin on the exact night of the slapping incident. A hunter had also gone missing in the Willow Creek area, later featured on a TV show. Now living on the Texas coast (where sightings are also reported), he remains an enthusiastic outdoorsman but never hikes or camps without a firearm and keeps a close eye on his dogs. Though he never had a clear visual (Class A) sighting, the cumulative evidence has made Bigfoot “always on his radar.”Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

Storytelling is more than entertainment — it's a moral act. In this episode of The Storyteller's Mission, Zena Dell Lowe explores the danger of stories replacing standards — and what that means for writers. When trust collapses and authority becomes unaccountable, storytellers are often asked to shape meaning and moral judgment. But assigning verdicts before exploring truth turns story into propaganda, even with the best intentions.Learn how to:Recognize the difference between moral clarity vs. moral coercionAvoid letting your story pre-judge or manipulate the audiencePreserve complexity, nuance, and consequences in fictionTrust your audience to wrestle with truth rather than forcing conclusionsWhether you write drama, historical fiction, or speculative worlds, this episode is a must-watch for writers committed to truthful, morally responsible storytelling.Watch this episode on YouTube Free Resources for Writers:Free Video Tutorial for ScreenwritingSign up for The Storyteller's Digest, my exclusive bi-monthly newsletter for writers and storytellers. The Worst Bigfoot EncounterA lifelong hunter with over 45 years of experience—successful with everything from coyotes and deer to bear and turkey—announces he is selling all his firearms, gear, and donating his camo after a nightmarish solo turkey hunt in late April near Cave Run Lake, Kentucky. Traumatized beyond words, he has been unable to confide in family, friends, or doctors for fear of being institutionalized, and now reaches out anonymously with his story. While set up motionless against a massive black oak on a ridge, calling in a hot gobbler, he is suddenly seized from behind by a huge, dark-brown, hairy Bigfoot-like creature. Its thick, callused gray-skinned, gorilla-like hands clamp over his mouth/neck and around his waist, pinning him helplessly to the tree and neutralizing his shotgun. He watches in frozen terror as two sleek black, dog-headed “werewolf” or Dogman creatures—complete with erect ears and three-inch fangs—ambush and devour a doe in the clearing just yards away, ripping through meat and bone in minutes with clicking sounds and howls. When the pair turns toward his hiding spot, the creature holding him unleashes a deafening roar that summons a group of 4–5 more Bigfoot-type beings. They explode from the woods in pursuit, chasing the predators away. The Bigfoot then snatches his gun, hurls it into the brush, blocks his attempt to retrieve it, and finally releases him. The hunter sprints ten frantic minutes back to his truck (a trek that normally takes 45), abandons the shotgun on the ridge forever, and speeds away in panic. In the weeks since, he suffers crushing PTSD: insomnia, uncontrollable crying jags at work, paralyzing fear of any woods or even his own yard. He now drives extra miles on highways to avoid wooded county roads, refuses to sit on the porch with his wife, hires a neighbor kid to mow the lawn, and has called off or been sent home from work multiple times. He believes the Bigfoot creatures deliberately protected him from being eaten, but the experience has destroyed his lifelong love of the outdoors. He asks: What should he do? Is there help or therapy for people who have had these kinds of encounters? Will he ever recover and enjoy the woods again?Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

Top Story: Nonfiction, Where You At? https://www.thetimes.com/culture/books/article/what-happened-non-fiction-books-publishing-industry-trends-gd9snqwjz If you've noticed that there aren't as many choices when it comes to non-fiction lately, much less the "big idea" books that used to top the bestseller charts over the years, you're not alone writes Ceci Browning of The Times. "Fiction sales might be swelling, but according to Nielsen, sales of non-fiction books in 2025 were down 6 per cent compared with 2024." The non-fiction numbers have been declining since 2017, and the books that do well are no longer big idea books, but books such as celebrity memoirs and self-help guides. Are readers less interested in non-fiction, or just finding the answers elsewhere? "One possibility is that the boom in podcasts has stolen huge chunks of traditional non-fiction audiences," says Browning, explaining that many author appear to 'give away' the most valuable parts of their books on the show. In addition, listeners get the knowledge straight from the author's mouth, distilled down to be understandable to a podcast audience. "Until very recently," says Mark Richards, Co-Founder of Swift Press, "if you wanted to hear about a subject in any kind of depth, a book was the [only] place to go." Then came the internet, says Richards, which made research easier; then came the podcast, which gave readers instant, free easy access to the information, but without the work or cost of buying and reading a book. Others aren't so glum. Literary agent John Ash believes it's possible for non-fiction to be make a comeback. "We have such an apocalyptic outlook," he says, "but actually these things are just broadly really cyclical. In the past six months or so there's been a cultural shift away from […] doomscrolling; towards people reclaiming their attention spans." On how to ensure that non-fiction books recover from today's "easily distracted, cash-strapped, podcast-obsessed era?" Richards says, "We're going to have to, as an industry, just make sure that they're f***ing good." Thanks to Jane Freidman for the hot tip.

With only five weeks left in this year-long journey, I can feel the end approaching—less like a high-wire act and more like gathering momentum toward something unknown. Week 47 of Ted Gioia's Immersive Humanities course explores twentieth-century American fiction through short stories and novel excerpts, revealing a distinctly American voice: sharp dialogue, vivid settings, and an experimental edge.O. Henry, “The Gift of the Magi” (1906): A charming story of love and sacrifice.F. Scott Fitzgerald, “A Diamond as Big as the Ritz” (1922): Wealth, excess, and a surprising twist.Ernest Hemingway, “The Killers” (1927): Sparse, tension-filled dialogue.William Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury (1929, excerpt): Challenging, with shifting time and perspective.Ralph Ellison, Invisible Man (1947, excerpt): A powerful sense of invisibility and identity.Shirley Jackson, “The Lottery” (1948): Disturbing and unforgettable.Flannery O'Connor, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” (1955): A Southern Gothic tale with shocking turns.Together, these works feel spacious, restless, and distinctly American—and they remind me how much more willing I am now to embrace difficult, even strange, books. This is a year-long challenge! ACOFAE Podcast Presents: The Raven Scholar: "Everything is important!" When was the last time you were able to really sink your teeth into a fantasy? When was the last time you were really and truly surprised by a plot twist? Be honest. It may have been a while. The Raven Scholar is something that you can really sit with and reread. Laura Marie reread it 4x for this episode! Welcome to a fantasy that is enriched by the audio experience, that has footnotes, and contains a plot that is so expansive and detailed that even after 4x, Laura Marie is sure there are things she's missing. A book that has haunting the narrative down to a tee, The Raven Scholar combines plot lines into a story that has religion and belief warring with ambition and scheming. Truly, The Raven Scholar is a delight from start to finish. Jessica Marie was able to read through the book once, and the differences in reading experiences makes the conversations delightful. We dove into crafting meaningful character arcs, writing with the reader in mind, and creating faith-driven stories that explore doubt, growth, and redemption. You can find out more about Jake on his website: https://authorjakelynch.com/Sign up for my writers' newsletter to learn more about the craft of writing, know when my workshops are and be the first to get exclusive information on my writing retreats. https://katcaldwell.com/writers-newsletterWant more information on my books, author swaps, short stories and what I'm reading? Jade Long and Jessica Thompson of Athens, Georgia based Hotel Fiction have a simple routine for their songwriting sessions: make some brownies, pour some wine. And they like to be outside. It's not complicated. But while food, drink, and the outdoors are all common sources of inspiration for songwriters, one element of the Hotel Fiction writing process is unique. When they're outside, they often prefer the top of a parking deck on the University of Georgia's campus. (Long and Thompson are both UGA alums.)I've been a big Hotel Fiction fan ever since discovering them on a trip to Athens a few years ago. Our daughter is also a UGA alum and still lives in Athens, so we go there often. The city obviously has a rich music history, and there's still a lot of great music there.Hotel Fiction's latest album is Staring at the Sun.

666. Kathleen Kass Byrd, part 1, joins us to discuss her book on the history of Natchitoches. "Kathleen M. Byrd's Natchitoches, Louisiana, 1803–1840 is an examination of one French Creole community as it transitioned from a fur-trading and agricultural settlement under the control of Spain to a critical American outpost on the Spanish/American frontier and finally to a commercial hub and jumping-off point for those heading west. Byrd focuses on historic events in the area and the long-term French Creole residents as they adapted to the American presence. She also examines the effect of the arrival of the Americans, with their Indian trading house and Indian agency, on Native groups and considers how members of the enslaved population took advantage of opportunities for escape presented by a new international border. Byrd shows how the arrival of Americans forever changed Natchitoches, transforming it from a sleepy frontier settlement into a regional commercial center and staging point for pioneers heading into Texas" (LSU Pr.). Kathleen M. Byrd (nicknamed Kass) is a distinguished anthropologist, archaeologist, and historian specializing in the history and prehistory of Louisiana, particularly the Natchitoches region. A native of Connecticut, she earned her B.A. from Marquette University, an M.A. from LSU (focusing on coastal subsistence patterns), and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. She served as Louisiana's state archaeologist for 15 years before joining Northwestern State University (NSU) in Natchitoches in 1994, where she later became director of the School of Social Sciences for 12 years until her retirement. This week, I talk with Susan Walter about her new airplane thriller Murder at 30,000 Feet. She shares her inspiration from the story, how she writes such cinematic thrillers, and how she managed multiple POVs. Murder at 30,000 Feet Synopsis It's a ticket to paradise. Flight 868 with nonstop service to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over a dozen tipsy passengers are off to a destination wedding. A team of high school baseball players are headed to a tournament. The plane is packed with people eager to escape their lives, and others who can't wait to return to their beloved home. But sweet anticipation turns to terror when a lightning strike short-circuits the avionics and plunges the plane into darkness. When the lights come back on, a passenger is found brutally murdered, with only a bewildered air marshal to solve the crime. He soon realizes that several passengers are harboring dark secrets, but the identity of the murderer eludes him. There's only one certainty: the killer is on the plane. Thousands of feet above the earth with thunderstorms closing in, the danger outside is as grave as the mounting threat within. Can the captain outrun the storm? Or will the murderer among them bring the plane down first?
