The boys have gone to live in an abandoned house they've named Bachelor's Paradise, where they spend all their time watching American network television. Their father Clarence works day and night in his blacksmith shop, producing bizarre metallic creations no one can make any sense of. Martha Wiebe returns to the stifling conformity of the valley to discover that her brother Abe, a preacher, has abandoned his congregation to devote himself to the construction of “The Ark”, a massive and mysterious edifice whose purpose he will not divulge. Jennifer Acker, founder and editor in chief of The Common, speaks to Emily Everett about her essay “On 15 Years of The Common,” which appears in The Common's recent fall issue. The piece is a reflection on the hard work and stick-to-itiveness it takes to train a horse—and keep a literary magazine running. Jennifer talks about how The Common has grown and expanded since its early days—when it was only her and a few student interns and section editors—including some highlights like favorite portfolios and a new film adaptation of a story from Issue 16. Jennifer also discusses her forthcoming novel, Surrender, out in April 2026 from Delphinium. The book explores smalltown life, following a woman who returns to her family's farm to raise goats, and encounters life challenges that extend far beyond farmwork. Jennifer Acker is author of the debut novel The Limits of the World, a fiction honoree for the Massachusetts Book Award. Her memoir “Fatigue” is an Amazon bestseller, and her short stories, essays, translations, and reviews have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Oprah Daily, the Washington Post, Literary Hub, n+1, and The Yale Review, among other places. In this episode of the Project Narrative Podcast, Jim Phelan and Rhona Trauvitch discuss “The Bookmaking Habits of Select Species” by Ken Liu, first published in the August 2012 issue of the online journal Lightspeed, and then included in Liu’s 2016 collection entitled The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories. Rhona Trauvitch, Associate Teaching Professor at Florida International University, specializes in cross-disciplinary analogical reasoning, particularly at the intersection of literature and STEM. Trauvitch directs Florida International University’s Science and Fiction Lab, whose mission is to build bridges between research and teaching in STEM fields and in the humanities. Her work in the lab has been supported by Humanities Initiatives Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and most recently by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Trauvitch’s own research and teaching have been devoted to exploring how fictionality can be used to enhance non-scientists’ comprehension of science, including especially difficult to comprehend concepts in science. Trauvitch is the author of a forthcoming book, Fi-Sci: Avatars of Science and Fiction, which demonstrates her model in action. Trauvitch has also co-edited a forthcoming special issue of Style on the interrelations of fiction and science.

Sarah Vogel was born in Auschwitz and liberated at age three, but she has no memories of being there and nobody to tell her the story of her birth or her mother. Becoming Sarah (Diane Botnick, She Writes Press 2025) grapples with identity, memory, belonging, and reinventing oneself. Sarah's trajectory is filled with both happiness and extreme loss, and she finds love, friendship, and home, but the lies she invented as a survivor follow her through her daughters and granddaughters, each of them survivors of something. Diane was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, but always knew she'd wind up in New York City. Her first night in Greenwich Village she went to a double feature of Godard's “Weekend” and Wiseman's “Titicut Follies,” and her romance with the city began. For the next 30 years, Diane worked around, starting out in Italy assisting people like Jerome Robbins and Ellen Stewart with their contributions to the Spoleto Festival, then back in the City for the Dia Art Foundation, Isamu Noguchi, Great Performances at WNET, and finally, Workman Publishing. Along the way, she returned to school in pursuit of a master's in creative writing at City College. Fulfilling all requirements but unable to pass the French exam (with a dictionary!), she was never awarded her diploma. However, the privilege of being mentored by Donald Barthelme and being appointed student editor of the literary magazine FICTION gave her far more than a diploma ever could.
