Hello to you, Steve Wyzga, listening in Frederick, Maryland on your Happy Birthday!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. To grow takes time.To grow takes patience, fortitude, even silence. To grow means letting go of what you know to allow life to help you recover so that you become fertile soil again. Walking the Camino de Santiago took me through harvested fields. All dry, brown, cut down to earth as far as the eye could see. One might think that nothing was going on in those fields; but you'd be wrong. Those fields are fallow.Fallow land remains unplanted for a time. Fallow land is land left to rest, regenerate, pause. It allows the soil of a field to replenish nutrients.Story Prompt: I'm taking this FallBattical time to rest, renew, recover, and grow. What about you? How will you become fertile soil again? Write that story. You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer https://www.quartermoonstoryarts.net/services/,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack and on LinkedInStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Just a short jaunt up the road from Frederick Maryland you can visit Latrobe Pennsylvania. It was world renowned for years as the home of the Rolling Rock brewing and bottling location but they were sold so only one other thing has maintained it's consistency and thats the Pittsburgh Steelers summer camp which takes place each year (well, except for the covid year) since 1966. We make the yearly pilgrimage and took in all the sights, sounds, smells and of course all the football that can be offered this time of year. We discuss the the Steelers new additions from the draft and free agency as well as the growth potential and possible cuts heading into the 2023 season. To round out this episode, we also rank the offensive and defensive positions within the division and that definitely included a few surprises and contested choices. Season 5 premiers with the tragic murder of 9-year-old Christopher Lee Ausherman Jr., who was beaten, raped, and strangled by convicted pedophile murderer Elmer Spencer. This sadistic monster brutally beat the boy and left his battered, nude body in a baseball, 3rd place dugout in Frederick Maryland. Lured to his death with a pack of Pokémon cards, this innocent child's murder prompted lawmakers to change how the state of Maryland sentences its repeat sexual predators to mandatory sentences of life in prison without the possibility for parole. This episode also profiles the unsolved cutting homicide of 34-year-old Tameka Mobley who was found with upper body trauma in the 4400 block of Laplata Avenue in the Medfield area of north Baltimore on March 10, 2015. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Sponsor- The United States Personal Chef AssociationThe Covid pandemic has clearly redefined the world of dining. Despite over 110,000 restaurants closing around the country, people still want the ambiance and social connectivity that is so critical to the dining experience. Over the past 27 years, the world of the personal chef has grown in importance to fulfill those dining needs. While the pandemic certainly upended the restaurant experience, it provided an Avenue for personal chefs to close that dining gap. Central to all of that is the United States Personal Chef Association. Representing nearly 1,000 chefs around the US and Canada, USPCA provides a strategic backbone for those chefs that includes liability insurance, training, communications, certification, and more. One of the big upcoming events for USPCA is their annual conference scheduled July 7-10 at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota, FL. Featuring a host of speakers and classes, the conference is a way for chefs to hone their skills and network with like-minded businesspeople. For those who supply the industry, it's a chance to reach not just decision-makers but the actual buyers of products. This is from a talk presented at The Well Collaborative gathering on October 23rd in Frederick Maryland. I love talking about the practicalities of art-making and creativity. It's quite possibly my favorite conversation to have. In this talk, I walk through some of my own processes and musings about the subject of turning ideas into reality and how that is supported by collaboration with other artists. I also share an ongoing dialogue I'm having with other creatives about the relationship between inspiration and wisdom. The metaphor and the sail and the anchor have been a very interesting way for me to understand for myself and a way to explain to other creatives the way inspiration is both pursued and caught while submitting to leadership and the wisdom of those who've gone before us enables us to take ideas and turn them into realities with a social life outside of our imagination. Finally, I share how collaboration has served to re-ignite my creativity and give my role as a curator and coach a renewed sense of purpose. For other resources visit https://legacycollective.co The Legacy Collective is a resource for the creative class. We provide a point of connection for artists and creative entrepreneurs to be encouraged in their artistic and spiritual life. We also provide practical training through courses and workshops. For fellow pioneers, makers, and storytellers, we proved content of all types to help them build their own legacy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/madetolast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/madetolast/support
Daryl Davis - One man and the Ku Klux Klan: The power of respectful communicationHow does a black musician who's jammed with the likes of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, BB King and even Bill Clinton - become friends with an Imperial Wizard from the Ku Klux Klan?In this polarised world, breaking down entrenched positions may be the most important skill needed by us all. If two passionate sides can agree to disagree, long enough to find what they have in common - could we overcome climate change, poverty and even racism? My guest on this episode of Inside Influence podcast would say a resounding yes.On today's Inside Influence Podcast episode I talk to R&B musician and Race Reconciliator Daryl Davis about talking to the “other”.Growing up overseas as the son of diplomats, he returned to the US as a 10-year-old and was shocked to discover that people could hate him because of the colour of his skin. Later that year he saw MLK assassinated. This formed a question that went on to define the course of his life: “‘How can you hate me if you don't even know me?”Through music he discovered a beautiful universal language and had a wonderful career playing the piano for some of the greats such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. One night while playing in a bar in Frederick Maryland, he met a Ku Klux Klan member and decided the best way to find an answer to his question was to attend their rallies.Rather than a debate, he was looking to have a conversation. Rather than trying to convince or convert, he decided to approach people with curiosity and respect.Over the past 30 years, Daryl Davis has inspired 200+ people to quit the Ku Klux Klan. Through dialogue and (as you'll come to hear) a thirst to first understand before being understood.Today's Guest Daryl DavisDaryl Davis is an award-winning R&B piano player, actor, author, and race relations expert. He has worked with Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley's Jordanaires, The Legendary Blues Band and many others. He currently tours with The Daryl Davis Band. He is also an actor and appeared on HBO's critically acclaimed series The Wire.As a Race Reconciliator, he has been sent around the world by the State Department to talk about conflict reconciliation and race relations. He has won numerous awards and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, NPR and other media outlets to talk about race relations. He hosts a podcast called Changing Minds and has written a book on his relationships with Klu Klux Klan members called “Klan-destine Relationships”LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daryl-davis-5226b24/Twitter: https://twitter.com/realdaryldavisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/realdaryldavis/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DarylDavisRaceReconciliator/“One person can make an exponential change because when they impact another, that person then goes on to impact another.”“You cannot change someone's reality, they have to change it themselves.”“You have to invite the other to participate and when you see that happen collectively, that is when huge things happen.”You'll learnHis journey from that bar in Maryland to immersing himself in the world of the KKK – what he learned, how he has learned to respond and what that has to teach us about having deeply difficult conversations. Why he is NEVER offended by what he hears in those conversations – this one intrigued me the most – including how he stays in a place of active respect and curiosity – in situations that would bring most people's blood to the boil. Why he always start with ‘commonality' - and he uses some beautiful language here – essentially beginning any difficult conversation with what he has in common with the other person, before moving to what he has in contrast. Why change never happens in the moment, I think this one is worth hearing a few times – we will never change someone's mind in the moment. The intention instead is to invite them to an exploration (NOT A DEBATE) – and then respectfully sow seeds that they can reflect on later. Why self awareness and courage are muscles we all have – and only by strengthening and using those muscles – can we inspire others to start doing the same. Parents and leaders, this one is on us.As someone who considers himself to be ‘just a rock and roll player' how Daryl has managed to achieve what many movements have not – by first deciding to listen. And finally, Daryl's own personal roadmap to having deeply difficult conversations. A game changing tool for any conversation or situation where the emotions and stakes are at their most intense.References and links mentionedThe Charlotteville “Unite the Right” Rally. My new ebook The Influencer Code. The Mark Twain quote was from The Innocents Abroad / Roughing It.Daryl's book Klan-destine RelationshipsIf you liked this episode, you might also enjoyBob Chapman – Truly human leadership: What it means to lead like everybody mattersHamish Thomson – Why it's not always right to be right Judy Atkinson - 4 Keys to Transform Conflict with Deep ListeningJonah Berger - How to change anyone's mind without having to pushSubscribe to and Review the Inside Influence PodcastThanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Inside Influence Podcast! Our 25 acre site is a woodland paradise situated along a peaceful rambling creek that offers a rich diversity of eco-zones and resources to work with and learn from. We have multiple food forests, at different ages and stages that boast over 100 varieties of cultivated fruits, nuts and medicinals. Michael and I spent about 20 minutes in the pre-chat talking about kick-starter and Paw Paws and many things I think a lot of listeners will find interesting but I separated it out so that if you didn’t want to you could just jump to the next episode and here our full interview. Let me know what you think! Keep it in! Take it out! put it somewhere else! Don’t edit a thing it’s all good! What’s your opinion of our pre-chat. It might have been more valuable to Michael before his kick-starter ended which is bittersweet because it ended today before I even post this but he funded his campaign so I hope most of all you will buy one of his books on amazon and leave him a 5star review because he definitely drops some golden seeds in our full chat coming up soon! It’s episode number 96 and I have Caitlin Morris from Frederick, Maryland. Let me introduce her by reading her “about” web page from her http://www.mscaitlinsschool.com/ . “Ms. Caitlin hangs out with the misfits and scallywags. She sings loudly and out of tune. She is partial to walks in the rain. But the most important thing is this: Caitlin loves blacksmithing. The Vermont native runs Ms. Caitlin’s School of Blacksmithing in Maryland, which is dedicated to sharing the craft with as many unsuspecting people as possible. She also teaches at other schools up and down the east coast.“ We had a great interview discussing her background and some great info on scholarships, how she has secured a few and some tips on how you can. What We Talked About Caitlin teaches blacksmithing at her own business “Miss Caitlin's School of Blacksmithing” and at other educational institutions along the East coast of the US. Caitlin opened her school of blacksmithing in Frederick Maryland in 2015. Her blacksmith background began at the John C Campbell Folk School in 2009, her first class was taught by Matt Jenkins. She took a week’s vacation off from her day job to travel to the school for the week-long class. Soon after learning how to blacksmith Caitlin immediately started sharing her experience and teaching the craft to her friends. And so the journey of becoming a better teacher began then. Caitlin talks about the scholarships she has been granted to help with the financial aspects of taking a week-long blacksmith class. Her scholarship advice is to apply to as many as you can because this gives you the practice of writing about yourself and why you deserve a scholarship. Your verbiage will become refined through the process. One of her suggestions for metal sculpture inspiration is to look at the yearly “Metal Design International” books, they feature around 8 blacksmiths around the world. How important is it to study the past? Charles Fillmore feels it is very important, especially as it relates to the old and the new issues of Christianity in the orthodox church. Charles' talk “The Work of Spiritual Ideas in Sense Consciousness,” given on January 13, 1924, states his ideas on this important topic. My special guest is Rev. Toni Fish from Unity in Frederick (Maryland).
