In this episode, he shares how to break away from linear strategies and dare to think boldly and take a risk. KEY TAKEAWAYS... Great startups force choices, not comparisons. Early believers are essential for co-creating groundbreaking futures. Intrapreneurs succeed by innovating discreetly before scaling their ideas. Striking out on bold experiments is crucial - safe bets won't lead to grand slams. WHAT I LOVE MOST…Mike says that the best ideas often begin as unsettling or even disliked by many. We spoke about how his observations on the last 14 years at Floodgate inspired him to write the book. Earlier this week, I visited the offices of Floodgate Partners in Menlo Park to talk with its co-founding partner Mike Maples. As an early investor in Twitter, Twitch.tv and many other successful start-ups, Maples is one of Silicon Valley's most respected venture capitalists. He is, to borrow the title of his new book, an investor in “Pattern Breakers” - entrepreneurs whose radical innovations challenge preexisting conventions and, quite literally, change the future. But, as he explained, while pattern breakers might sometimes have to be disagreeable, that doesn't justify what he calls the “jerks “who all-too-often do a disservice to the business of building the future. Mike Maples is a co-founding Partner at Floodgate. He has been on the Forbes Midas List eight times in the last decade and was also named a “Rising Star” by FORTUNE and profiled by Harvard Business School for his lifetime contributions to entrepreneurship. Benjamin Reigle, founder and host of the Revenue Cycle podcast "My Good Friends," shares his extensive experience in the healthcare industry, including co-founding Health Rise Consulting Firm and leading initiatives at companies like McKinsey & Company and Accredited Health (now R1). He is also the CEO of Tarpon Health, a community driving automation for healthcare providers. In this episode, Benjamin dives into the topic of healthcare change, emphasizing the importance of understanding industry shifts. Stay tuned to gain insights into the evolving landscape of healthcare. The Change Healthcare breach, as discussed in the podcast episode with Benjamin Reigle, has had a profound impact on the healthcare industry. The breach resulted in challenges with claim submission, cash flow, and data security, affecting not only the operations of Change Healthcare but also having a ripple effect on healthcare providers, payers, and patients. The breach led to issues with claim submission, as some payers who relied solely on Change as their intermediary were unable to process claims. This created a backlog of claims and disrupted the revenue cycle for many healthcare organizations. Some providers resorted to manual processes, such as printing and mailing claims, which added complexity and delays to the billing process. Cash flow was significantly impacted by the breach, especially for smaller healthcare entities like physician groups and community hospitals. With claims not being processed efficiently, these organizations faced financial strain due to delayed payments and uncertainty about when the situation would be resolved. The lack of cash flow threatened the financial stability of these smaller entities, highlighting the importance of having contingency plans and backup systems in place. Data security concerns arose as a result of the breach, with questions about the extent of the data compromised and the potential implications for patient privacy. The breach raised questions about the adequacy of security measures in place and the vulnerability of healthcare systems to cyber threats. The need for enhanced data security protocols and proactive measures to prevent future breaches became a pressing issue for healthcare organizations. Experian Health Client Communication February 23, 2024 Experian Health is aware of Change Healthcare's (Optum's) announcement on February 21 about a cybersecurity incident affecting its systems. Experian's Cyber Incident Response team and Cyber Threat Intelligence teams have been engaged and are closely monitoring the situation. We have not seen evidence of a threat to Experian. Out of an abundance of caution and consistent with Experian's security practices, Experian has temporarily severed connectivity to Change Healthcare. During the period of this severed connectivity, there will be an impact to batch and EDI authorizations, claims and remits, claim status, eligibility, and notice of care transactions that Experian Health sends to Change Healthcare. Experian will resume connectivity to Change when it receives assurances from Change Healthcare that it has adequately contained the threat. Payers work with a variety of clearinghouses to process data. In many cases, multiple payer connections are available although sometimes payer connectivity may be limited or even exclusive to a single clearinghouse. In the majority of cases, transactions from Experian Health route directly to the requestedpayer. When connectivity is limited or certain routes are unavailable, however, it is common to route traffic through another clearinghouse. Below is a list of potentially impacted payers. Our teams are actively evaluating and rerouting transactions when an alternative route is available and will provide an update to this list as soon as possible. Things You'll Learn:Medicare Advantage is the perfect example of how to provide health equity, as it gives money and resources to prevent illness and treat illness in a personalized manner.Decentralizing care can make clinicians more efficient and help them perform at the top of their license with the help of technology and analytics. The current hospital experience could be more efficient and scary, but it can be fixed using different tools and models of care.Organizations like Clover must ensure everybody gets access to the care they need, taking into account their social, economic, and environmental factors.Structural barriers, such as the structure of insurance and societal values, often create a disincentive to providing care to those who need it most.Everyone can be part of health equity by taking care of themselves first.Hospitals should be places where we go for certain aspects of our healthcare, not all of them. Clover Health Investments, Corp., Q2 2022 Earnings Call, Aug 08, 2022
Andrew Toy is the President at Clover Health (NASDAQ: CLOV), where he is responsible for driving the vision for how technology and analytics can improve the lives of Clover's members. Andrew joined Clover from Google, where he coordinated enterprise activities for the Android team and ran Machine Learning, Enterprise Search and Analytics for the G-Suite team. Before that, he was the CEO and co-founder of Divide, a company focused on creating a split between work and personal data on mobile devices, which was acquired by Google in 2014. He earned his BS and MS in Computer Science from Stanford. Highlights from the Show Clover Health is a health insurer focused on Medicare Clover's mission is to use technology to drive better health outcomes, therefore reducing the total cost of healthcare, allowing more people in more places to be covered The US is fairly unique in that healthcare is almost exclusively provided through an insurance mechanism, meaning there's a provider, a patient and a payer involved, complicating our ability to get efficiencies as a market The mechanism Clover is using to change outcomes is The Clover Assistant, which ingests different data points from all the various places and ways people get care to provide insights and advice to primary care physicians to help them in providing care to patients Clover does this without limiting patients to only certain providers, and they not only don't charge providers for access to Clover Assistant, but actually reimburse them at higher rates if they use Clover Assistant Because Clover is focused on helping the overall outcome, it allows them to make longer term decisions on spending on care because they realize, not paying for something today to save money may mean you spend much more tomorrow In P&C, if you don't have a burglarizing of a home today, that has nothing to do with whether you will or won't tomorrow, but healthcare is different since not providing care today can mean health is worse (and more costly) tomorrow Why is an insurer best positioned to solve this health issue? Insurers are incented to reduce total healthcare costs, so their incentives are aligned Insurers see all care, regardless of who provides it Insurers have the mechanism to spread health benefits because any savings in one area can be spread to other areas, broadening care For most commercial health insurers, they don't control members joining or churning since it's usually driven by people's employment, so it's not surprising commercial insurers would be less inclined to build what Clover is building because of their natural tendency away from long-term views This episode is brought to you by VPay (vpayusa.com), part of Optum Financial. Varsha Rao is the CEO of Nurx, a leading telehealth platform focused on women. Through Nurx, you can get prescriptions, like contraception, acne treatment, migraine treatment, and at-home testing delivered to your door. Jana invested in Nurx's seed round in 2016 and introduced Varsha to the company as an angel investor and, years later, Varsha was recruited as CEO. We talk with Varsha about how her prior roles—as COO of Clover Health, Head of Global Operations at Airbnb, and founding an ecommerce company in the 90s— prepared her to lead a company at the intersection of healthcare and consumer technology. Varsha shares why she's so passionate about Nurx's work to break down barriers to accessing healthcare: “Access hurdles come in a number of forms. One is a geographic...about 20M women live in contraception deserts...second is economics - it can be expensive to access care - the third is really around stigma.” Lastly, we like to wrap up with shoutouts to people who have helped us along the way. Varsha highlights Regina Benjamin, former US Surgeon General in the Obama Administration, and Nurx Board Director. The topic is his book Start at the End: How to Build Products That Create Change. In this episode of Trend Following Radio we discuss: Matt argues that the purpose of everything is behavior change.
