In this episode 44, we are excited to be taking you to the capital of Tasmania – Hobart. Lyle and I have visited Hobart separately and now together and we just love this city. It's one of those cities, that the more you go, the more you discover and the more you love it. It is such a clash of history, modern art, nature, sporting events, food, wine and so much more. We start our episode with a crazy fire alarm problem at the airport before heading to the spectacular little-known village of Opossum Bay. Well, I guess the secret will be out after this podcast. We then head to Hobart where we cross the famous Derwent River to the cities historic waterfront area. There we share all about the most visited tourism attraction in Tasmania – the Salamanca markets. This is also where the world famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race finishes. You can't visit Hobart without a trip to the top of Mount Wellington. We try and describe just how incredible the views are from the Pinnacle at 1271 metres. Obviously, we will tell you about some of the wineries within 30 minutes of Hobart and the oldest operating brewery in Australia – the Cascade Brewery. Hobart has one of the most beautiful and diverse botanic gardens in Australia – and I tell you the best things to see when you visit. Of course, we share where to eat, where to stay and lots of fun and interesting facts about Tasmania – like it has this cleanest air in the world. Stick around to the end though – if you're not easily shocked – to hear about the fabulous, weird, whacky, fascinating MONA – a privately owned art museum by an eccentric millionnaire that has as one of its most popular exhibitions a poo making machine and a wall of over 150 different plaster casts of ……… a certain female body part. Enjoy this interesting and diverse city in this podcast all about Hobart. In today's episode, we have the incredible Omar Diaz, founder of wedding photography business, By The Wilde. We met at a workshop in early 2021 and since then he's gone from strength to strength - pushing his creative boundaries and creating a business that aligns with his style and values. It was an honour to chat with him and discover more about his journey to becoming a recent full-time photographer. Get to know Omar Omar is based in Hobart Tasmania - a beautiful part of the world that attracts a lot of interstate travel for elopements. He started his photography journey inspired by travel after burning out from years of social work. Backpacking through parts of Asia, Europe and the Americas he captured stunning images of nature and progressed onward to people-focused photography in the streets of South America. This sparked an obsession with wanting to collect and curate those special moments - building a story around every one of his subjects. He did his first official wedding in the summer of 2019 and has since been building his skills and business into the impressive portfolio you see today. What we talk about Omar's roots and photography journey. The benefits of having a fantastic wife who has wedding industry knowledge. How he's feeling 6 weeks into full-time photography - an honest and raw perspective. Creating his new website and honing in on his personality. Why community is important to him. How to build and search for a sense of community.Mentoring and peer-reviewing. How he chose certain creators to review his work. Practical things Omar took away from mentoring. How to make your clients feel comfortable. The power of humanising the space and levelling with your clients. His kit and how he uses it throughout the wedding day. Building relationships and rapport - and what it means to him. His ratio of creativity to business person. How much of a factor his editing has on the end image result. A few practical things you could do to create that ‘magical' feeling with light. Personal projects and style shoots - the benefits he's seen. How to handle others' expectations of style shoots: balancing creativity with meeting the brief. Documenting his son's life and the guilt of not documenting enough. My biggest takeaway It's awesome to see someone who has stepped into their own style so early on in their career. But my biggest takeaway from our conversation was the power of human connection in photography. And this comes in different, but all equally important forms. His connection to his wife and her network. His connection to the community of peers and mentors he's built around himself. And, creating a human connection with his clients. It's this connection that drives purpose, supports creativity and truly helps you tell stories. PODCAST EPISODE 63: Ronnie Voigt, natural beekeeper and educator, Natural Beekeeping Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania One form of heaven involves two of my greatest loves: natural beekeeping and Tasmania. Most of you would know that Tasmania is an exquisite island situated off the mainland of Australia, home to diverse and pristine landscapes, and unique flora and fauna; also, from my experience, it is also home to many environmentally conscious humans, with huge hearts, doing what they can to spread the word about the vitality of bees. However, for those new to beekeeping, natural beekeeping may be a fresh concept. This form of keeping respects the needs of the colony over those of the beekeeper. This holistic approach comes from an environmentalist perspective that honours these miraculous insects and seeks to provide the most positive domesticated life cycle. In turn, this “api-centric” approach should be encouraged for all beekeepers who want to keep bees for reasons other than intensive honey production. This is often done through the replication of the nest structure that would usually be found in the wild. By doing this, the colony is made to feel as comfortable as possible, and the intricate and sophisticated processes carried out by bees can continue. This encourages the superorganism to communicate as effectively and adapt to external conditions as they arise. For my love of Tasmania, natural beekeeping and the passion of my next guest, I am delighted to introduce you to Ronnie Voigt— natural beekeeper extraordinaire and founder of Natural Beekeeping Tasmania. Ronnie has been beekeeping using natural methods for almost 15 years, and she does so through the use of some specifical hives and processes. Favouring the Layens Hive—an uncommon choice of hive that originated from France, horizontal in orientation, with extra deep frames— and the Warre hive—a vertical top-bar hive that uses bars instead of frames, also originating from France—Ronnie has honed a unique skill set that keeps bees at the forefront of her practice. She is also interested in Housel positioning—a method of positioning comb in the hive that works with the direction of the hive floor and seeks to approximate the order that comb is arranged in the wild. For me, meeting keepers like Ronnie is an utter treat; I love nothing more than yarning about the intricacies of natural beekeeping— it fills my heart with joy and inspires me to keep finding new ways and means, thrilled to know that there are beekeepers tucked away in the most gorgeous pockets of the planet doing what they can to marry their passion for beekeeping with their genuine love for bees as creatures. I also know that their ethics transfers over to their businesses, which is what we need in the fight of mass and blind consumerism. Through Natural Beekeeping Australia, Ronnie provides beekeeping classes, honey and bee-related products, and hives for keepers–a true Tasmanian gem. Tune in to hear Ronnie and I unpack the intricacies of the Layens and Warre Hives, what it's like to live and keep bees in spectacular Tasmania, and the motivation behind her business, Natural Beekeeping Tasmania. http://www.naturalbeekeepingtasmania.com.au

He has won so many races I can't count them. Often at speeds pro athletes would be proud of. Hayden has podiumed at World championships, won Ironman and 70.3 categories over many years. He has finished top 10 overall in several Ironmans including an 8:45 at Ironman New Zealand last year, from an age group start and has often been the first age grouper home. His palmarés is so long I wouldn't have the time to list it out.Hayden is certainly no stranger to toughness and mental resilience. He is called upon by Richie Porte and Cam Wurf for a training partner when they are home, such is his strength and consistency. You can bet if he is racing, he will be as tough as nails. Hayden is also one of my longest coach/athlete relationships. Hayden is also the principle at Armstrong's Insurance Brokers, a thriving insurance business in Hobart Tasmania, that has seen big growth over the years. As well as being a Husband and father to a small family. I thought Hayden would be the perfect man to talk family, elite sport and business and the nature of what mental resilience across such a broad life actually means to him.Grants Website-https://www.inconvenientminds.com.au/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/GrantGiles)
I often talk about my love for the craft beer world, a world that just continues to amaze me…this podcast kind of came from left field.Picture this, you head to a local bar to do a meet and greet with a co-founder of one of the most significant craft brewing entities, Greg Koch from Stone Brewing. Youstrike up a conversation with his wife, Sarah, and bond over showing each otherpictures of our cats on our phones! Yep, cats!!The conversation continued, and I found Sara's story really interesting, and I asked her if she would like to chat on my podcast when she returned home. She seemed prettykeen, and then said “well what are you up to tomorrow, we are free afterbreakfast and podcasts are a lot more fun in person”. She then turned to Greg and he was like, “yeah, we can do that”.And so that's how this episode came about, and I am sure glad it did. We talked about so many things that I ditched my 30-minute time limit for this episode. Greg and Sarasip on local Tasmanian beers as they profess their love for craft beer, andTasmania, get us up to date on their plans with Metallica, and talk about thebubbling craft beer scene in Shanghai…the location for their latest tap room .Many thanks to Greg and Sara, they made my year!https://www.facebook.com/BeerHealer
