#10 - Jess Walcott - Brain Myths

Insight at Work with Ken Blackwell

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 5, 2020 41:13

IN THIS EPISODE: Today were going to discuss one of my favorite topics which is neuroscience and the study of the brain!  About 20 years ago I was introduced to neuroscience through the lens of how it applied to coaching, training and leadership development. This understanding of neuroscience instantly gave me a context for why a particular development approach worked well and why another didn’t. I found that when the approach sync’d with how the brain works it was successful, when it ran counter it almost always failed. It changed the way I trained and coached. And ever since, I’m always on the lookout to increase my knowledge and understanding of neuroscience.  Needless to say, I was really intrigued when I heard a friend use the phrase “brain myths” during a conversation. Ooh, tell me more!  So let me step back a bit for a minute and tell you about my friend. Jess Walcott is an assistant professor at Bucks County Community College where she teaches neuroscience and biology. Her undergraduate work at Bryn Mawr College was in chemistry and psychology but she then went on to complete a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, Jess began a career as a medical writer working on regulatory submissions for new drugs and writing publications in scientific journals which she found more gratifying that running her own experiments. On a lark, she began teaching biology at Bucks and realized this was WAY more engaging than sitting at a computer analyzing patient data. These days her focus is completely on teaching where she concentrates on boosting scientific literacy and getting messy doing real experiments.  Back to brain myths.   As as a fun and  interesting way of pulling together the learning for her students at the end of the semester, Jess challenges them to identify a myth about the brain and then explain why it’s not true. There are many beliefs about the brain that we commonly believe are true, when in fact they’re not. What are we talking about here? You know things like there are left-brained and right-brained people. That the brain works like a computer. Another one is very common is the belief that we only use 10% of our brains. Of course a favorite of mine, and apparently of Jess’ students is the myth that drinking alcohol can kill brain cells.  Jess and I sat down to discuss these brain myths and others and to get into some of the science that underlies these fallacies and if there are parts of them that might in fact be a little bit true. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Jess is an adjunct professor at Bucks County Community College where she gets to learn along with her students in neuroscience and biology. Although she majored in chemistry and psychology for her undergraduate work at Bryn Mawr College, she studied neurodegeneration in an inherited form of muscular atrophy to complete her Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of the classroom, Jess serves on the board of directors for a residential summer camp and volunteers at an organic farm. Jess also has two boys who provide her with countless opportunities to marvel at the wonders of the developing brain. Laura is a designer and entrepreneur who studied design. After completing her studies, she worked in an agency. She would later branch out from the agency to work as a freelancer. Laura worked from home for approximately eight years. In her quest to make design easy to understand, the idea of creating a course crossed her mind.  Throughout her learning years, Laura had struggled with converting simple designs into attractive ones. She wanted a course that would help transform simple designs to make them professional and good looking. Listen to Laura as she tells Geordie how she created a portal for her clients.  What You’ll Learn What Laura disliked about working from home? What problem did Laura’s portal help solve? How Laura found out the impact of her portal How Laura handled the minimum viable product (MVP) process Navigating a WordPress hosted portal setup How long do aspiring developers take to master Laura’s design course? Importance of copywriting in design Leveraging Google Docs to come up with a landing page How to enhance your design skills How to design a compelling website with minimal struggle Why a minimal website is better than an eye-catching one Where to get good quality designs, illustrations, and icons for your website About design fundamentals What to consider when hiring a designer In This Episode Today, customers want the best website experience, and service providers have no choice but to satisfy them. Often, knowing how to offer the best services can be challenging as Laura found out. While she knew her needs, she did not understand how to articulate it until she created a portal for her clients.  At some point, Laura spoke at a conference where she discussed her client portal to fellow freelancers. Listen as she explains what happened after the conference. The feedback Laura received from the conference compelled her to launch her product immediately. She still pursued her dream of creating a design course.  How was Design Academy established? Laura says that during her time as a freelancer, she interacted with many developers. They wanted to venture into development but did not know how to go about achieving their dream. What does Laura’s design course entail? She reiterates that she hardly teaches her students how to master the course. Instead, she strives to ensure that learners can move from novice level to a complete attractive website. Laura shares the strategy she uses to teach her students with Geordie Wardman in this discussion.  According to Laura, developers can enhance their design skills through research and viewing other websites. She says the best way to gain experience is by saving sites that you like. Often, remembering sites you have encountered can be a difficult task. That is why developers should leverage tools that help them save sites for future reference.  Minimal and simple website design works best, especially for beginners. Laura says developers can always change websites in the future. What about drawing? According to Laura, drawing can be challenging, and many novice developers may not be in a position to do it on their own. However, they can solve this by using an illustration set. Laura explains how to go about it in-depth in this podcast. She also talks about using icons and combining them with colors.  What colors work best for a website? Listen in to find out how colors can transform the appearance of your site. Laura explains that at some point, you may need to hire a designer to handle your development needs professionally. However, she explains that there are various factors to consider before collaborating with any designer.  One of the main things she recommends is taking a look at the designer’s website. You can be sure that a designer won’t outsource their website development as they would their portfolio. Listen to Laura as she explains to Geordie why you need a designer that can match their website development to copywriting.  What approach does Laura use on a personal level when choosing a developer? Does she prefer developers from a specific region? What is the importance of hiring an all-rounded developer? Laura talks about all this comprehensively in this podcast.  Laura discusses the importance of working with professional developers and designers. She also reiterates that she spends a lot of her time teaching on design academy than she does on her client portal.  Resources How Laura built it Design Academy Laura Elizabeth Laura Elizabeth Twitter Design Fundamentals Client Portal

What does an award-winning entrepreneur, a TEDx Speaker, a baconatarian (thats a vegetarian who still eats bacon), a funky sock lover, a former rapper (who opened for the Wu-Tang Clan - YES, really!) and a previously 332lb man (who has since lost over 130lbs despite his affinity for bacon) have in common? They are all the same guy! Jason “JG” Goldberg is an international “Edutainer”, author of the #1 International Best-Seller “Prison Break” and creator of the Playful Prosperity AND Competition-Proof Business Academy programs. He has been a featured expert on media outlets including ABC, CBS, and FOX as well as teaching on the Mindvalley and SoulPancake platforms and creating a business in partnership with NASA and the space shuttle program while earning his MBA. Now JG focuses on blending his signature mix of simple and transformational wisdom, practical business mentorship, and belly-busting humor to help coaches, speakers and online educators build “Competition-PROOF” businesses full of impact and influence (and have a ton of FUN in the process)!   As a sought-after international speaker and host, JG has shared the stage with some of the world’s greatest thought-leaders and innovators in human potential and performance including Jason Silva (Host of Nat Geo’s “Brain Games”), Dr. Sean Stephenson (The 3 Foot Giant), Don Miguel Ruiz (The Four Agreements), Vishen Lakhiani (CEO of Mindvalley), Steven Kotler (Stealing Fire), Marisa Peer (the UK’s psychotherapist to the stars) and so many others that he hopes will impress you if these other ones don’t! ;)   Jason is EPIC and I love him dearly. He is so insanely layered and truly wears almost every hat and wears them well. He is so passionately dedicated to his work but also to the responsibility that he holds himself to when it comes to his own personal development, success and the care he practices for himself.   In this episode we go behind the dream to share with you what it looks like to grow past the victim mentality in order to take ownership of your own outcomes and create a thriving life for yourself.   In This Episode: Today’s guest, Jason Goldberg [ 3:10 ] Jason’s health journey & his release of 130lbs [ 5:20 ] Beginning his personal development journey [ 10:20 ] The day he dropped the blame game [ 15:30 ] A mission of joy [ 18:20 ] Consciousness rising in the masculine [ 19:50 ] Connection & community in entrepreneurship [ 28:40 ] Jason’s work and current excitements [ 35:05 ] Closing messages from Jason [ 41:20 ] Links & Resources Mentioned: You can get a free copy of JG’s latest book “How To Build a CompetitionProof Coaching Business” here: Jason's BookGo follow Jason on Facebook here: Jason's Facebook Connect with Jason on Instagram here: Jason's Instagram Did you hear something you loved here today?! I think we can all agree on that we’re living in an era of personal brand businesses, right? So it should come as no surprise that this idea of ‘future proofing’ has become super important to us. We need to be a lot more in charge of our own professional development which can be annoying, but it’s also pretty liberating if you look at it that way. Today’s guest is someone I genuinely see as a real thought leader and I could probably spend a whole podcast episode just listing all the amazing things she’s done. What our society does does not honor- is that moment.” “You don't devote your life to something for a paycheck; you do it because you know that it has meaning and it has greater purpose.” “Having severe pain, having severe discomfort, having a negative perspective on this experience is not natural. This is learned- this is culturally ingrained.” “Honoring my intuition and maintaining a positive perspective on everything is what moves this train forward.” LINKS MENTIONED: Start your subscription today by going to Cora.life! Presence: A Global Conversation for a New Earth.

IN THIS EPISODE: Today we continue our discussion about the initial level of human consciousness as proposed in Integral Theory; that of the Archaic. You will find it very helpful to pull up the doc here in show notes locating Adam in the realm of Form as well as his relation to what is evolving—Trans-form and Formlessness. God/Spirit as Source is the creator of humans and the ground of being from which spiritual consciousness arises. God kills! (that which stands in the way of growth). God makes alive! (the process of transformation into the realm of formlessness). Consciousness based on a False Self Identity is necessary for the foundation and understanding that leads to a True Self Identity. Adam represents the human self as individual while Israel will become conscious of the very same principles in the collective.
