Kevin Busque is the co-founder and CEO of Guideline, a 401(k) management company revolutionizing the retirement space for small and medium-sized businesses. Prior to Guideline, Kevin co-founded Taskrabbit, where he encountered firsthand the complexity and low participation rates of traditional 401(k) plans—largely due to confusing fee structures. After launching Guideline to address those problems head-on, the company has seen remarkable growth, hitting $120 million in ARR by June 2024. In this conversation, Kevin shares pivotal moments that shaped Guideline's trajectory, including a strategic partnership with Gusto. He also explains how his “Do the hard thing first” mindset helped the team build an industry-leading platform and disrupt an entrenched market. – Referenced: ADP: https://www.adp.com/ Aydin Senkut: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aydins/ CalSavers: https://www.calsavers.com/ DoorDash: https://www.doordash.com/ Fidelity: https://www.fidelity.com/ Guideline: https://www.guideline.com/ Gusto: https://gusto.com/ Intuit: https://www.intuit.com/ Jeremy Caballero: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremycaballero/ John Zimmer: https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnzimmer11/ Josh Reeves: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshuareeves/ Mike Nelson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mnelsonio/ Leah Solivan: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leahsolivan/ Paychex: https://www.paychex.com/ Plaid: https://plaid.com/ Taskrabbit: https://www.taskrabbit.com/ Tomer London: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomerlondon/ – Where to find Kevin: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinbusque/ – Where to find Brett: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brett-berson-9986094/ Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/brettberson – Where to find First Round Capital: Website: https://firstround.com/ First Round Review: https://review.firstround.com/ Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/firstround YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@FirstRoundCapital This podcast on all platforms: https://review.firstround.com/podcast – Timestamps: (00:00) Teaser: “I don't believe in stealth mode” (02:51) Inspiration behind Guideline (07:56) Lessons from a year's research before Guideline (10:44) Identifying market pull for Guideline (14:28) What Kevin learnt before shipping their first product (19:10) How Guideline set their fees up (27:51) The surprising range of Guideline's early customers (31:48) Kevin's insights from the Gusto integration (39:48) Guideline's first year (44:44) Working with Plaid as Guideline's first customer (53:28) Guideline's auto-enrollment feature (57:53) Lucky 8: Kevin's unexpected pricing strategy (62:04) Franchise opportunities (64:49) Kevin's reflections on Taskrabbit (71:36) Will Guideline ever go multi-product? He's made early bets on transformative companies like Twitter, Lyft, Twitch, Okta, Rappi, and Applied Intuition and is one of the pioneers of seed-stage investing as a category. He's been on the Forbes Midas List eight times and enjoys sharing the lessons he's learned from his years studying iconic companies. In his new book, Pattern Breakers: Why Some Start-Ups Change the Future, co-authored with Peter Ziebelman, he discusses what he's found separates startups and founders that break through and change the world from those that don't. Mike Maples, Jr. is a legendary early-stage startup investor and a co-founder and partner at Floodgate. After spending years reviewing the notes and decks from the thousands of startups he's known over the past two decades, he's uncovered three ways that breakthrough founders think and act differently. In our conversation, Mike talks about:• The three elements of breakthrough startup ideas• Why you need to both think and act differently• How to avoid the “comparison trap” and “conformity trap”• The importance of movements, storytelling, and healthy disagreeableness in startup success• How to apply pattern-breaking principles within large companies• Mike's one piece of advice for founders• Much morePre-order Mike's book here and get a second signed copy for free. John Zimmer talks about how to overcome the linguistic challenges of multilingual audiences and multilingual speakers. John has worked for a major Canadian law firm, the United Nations and the World Health Organisation. He also teaches public speaking in the Executive Programmes at the University of Geneva, University of Lausanne and IESE in Barcelona. This session was part of the 23rd European Speechwriter Network conference at Robinson College / Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, 17 - 19 April 2024.
This week's news that Moberly's KWIX-KRES Radio had let their entire on-air staff go has generated news stories this week from all three mid-Missouri television stations. Zimmer Communications president John Zimmer joined is live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" to discuss the importance of local radio. Mr. Zimmer tells listeners that his heart goes out to everyone impacted by this development in Moberly and other towns like Farmington and Festus as well. Mr. Zimmer says this will hurt the community. He notes that Zimmer has modeled a lot of its emphasis on news, sports and severe weather based on what the late Jerrell Shepherd did in Moberly and elsewhere. Mr. Zimmer also talked about his late father, Jerome Zimmer and the stations he started in southeast Missouri's Dexter. Mr. Zimmer says his father taught him the importance of serving the local community and local advertisers, and that he thinks of his father daily. Mr. Zimmer also discussed a bipartisan bill in Congress aimed at protecting AM radio in cars. He supports that bill and says it's about safety for all Americans:
Zimmer Communications' President, John Zimmer, highlights the massive impact that local radio has on local communities, as well as what's being done on the national level for the broadcast industry. Stephanie fills us in on "Pizza Gate."
Fast food workers in California are seeing an increase in their paychecks. This is because of a recent minimum wage law that went into effect earlier this month. The law requires fast food chains like McDonald's and Starbucks to pay workers $20 per hour. It will also affect restaurants that have at least 60 other locations nationwide. Opponents of the law say it will lead to layoffs and store closures . . . but for fast food workers who have been fighting for better pay, this could mean being able to get a decent living wage. Fast Company Staff Writer Pavithra Mohan joined us to unpack it all. For more on this, check out Pavithra's reporting. Then we chatted with Lyft CEO David Risher about taking over the company after cofounders Logan Green and John Zimmer left a year ago, having to lay off more than a quarter of the company's workforce last April, and focusing on his key strategy: “customer obsession drives profitable growth.” We also discussed the company's future in Minneapolis, whether self-driving cars will transform the industry, and what Risher learned heading up U.S. retail at Amazon under Jeff Bezos.

The building features residential living situated above retail and public art spaces. The entry portals at the base define the black box theater and residential portions of the building.Double and triple height lobbies open up to the street through curtained glass walls at the base. The building's deep and varied openings and bronze windows and frames give a wonderful complexity to an otherwise familiar building form. The structure features a custom white brick with darker mortar, which gives the edifice a warm residential appearance. The bricks well scaled modularity complements the organized and complex facade. The project's esthetic and exterior elevations are reserved yet elaborate, familiar but novel, unpretentious, yet elegant.
In 1997, readers voted that the greatest book of the 20th Century was "Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien. In this episode, John Zimmer, FOCUS' Vice President of Apostolic Development, joins Jessica to talk about spiritual lessons we can learn from Lord of the Rings. This episode contains spoilers!John and Jess discuss:Tolkien's emphasis on never losing hope, even in impossible circumstancesThe importance given to friendship throughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the necessity of friendship in the Christian lifeWhy Tolkien didn't have Frodo choose to destroy the ring at the end of the novels and what this can teach us about how God uses our failures and weaknessesJohn Zimmer serves FOCUS as Vice President of Apostolic Formation. Since joining FOCUS in 1999, he has served in a variety of roles –including serving as a campus missionary, directing the national campus apostolate, overseeing the training and formation of staff, and leading the effort to bring the mission of FOCUS into parishes and non-campus environments. Chapter 1: While everybody else was thinking about where they were going, he figured out a way to get there. Meet the guy who stood up to his Goliath with nothing more than a pink mustache--the founder of Lyft, John Zimmer.Chapter 2: John Zimmer learns—well before he founded the company that became Lyft—that traveling the world when you're young will change what you thought was important.Chapter 3: Once you've found your territory it's easy to build a community on top of it, but if you stake your claim, be prepared to fight. Zimmer isn't a boxer, but does know the balance of muscle vs. moves when it comes to winning a fight, whether in the ring or in business. Instead of trying to be bigger, sometimes it's best to be better.CREDITSExecutive Producers: Dave Chappelle, Radio Rahim, Noah Gersh, Jamie Schefman, Nick Panama, Kenzi Wilbur, Elliot O'DeaMusic & Sound Design: Eric RaichelsonCreative Producer: Alex CasnoffHead of Production: Liz LeMayHead of Engineering: Jordan GalvanProduction Manager: Allie StrobelPost Coordinator: Alice BearnEdited by: Geoffrey MutchnikMixed by: Zack DjurichAdditional Editing & Sound Design: Jasper van Dijk & Noah Kowalski Til This Day is a Luminary Original Podcast in partnership with Pilot Boy Productions and SALT Audio.
Alex Bouaziz is the Co-founder and CEO of Deel, a full stack global HR and payroll platform. But the company didn't start that way, and we'll talk through Alex and his co-founder Shuo's journey from zero to one, starting with a product that helped startups hire international employees. Alex and Shuo launched the company one week before YC Demo day in 2019, and have since scaled to 20,000+ customers and raised over $685 million. They're supported by investors like YC, a16z, Spark Capital, Weekend Fund, Coatue, SV Angel, Soma Capital, Quiet Capital, and angels like Lachy Groom, Nat Friedman, Ryan Petersen, Alexis Ohanian, John Zimmer, Dara Khosrowshahi, Rex Salisbury, Justin Mateen, and more. — In this episode, we discuss: • The initial insight around remote work that started Deel in 2019 • How they initially built the wrong solution • Pivoting one week before YC demo day • Listening to customers to build a better product • Growing 20% every month for a year • Being a default optimist • Dealing with the emotional ups and downs of building a startup • Moving at “Deel Speed”, and how the team operates so fast • Deel's remote-first approach and its “WeWork Squads” • His advice to other leaders building remote teams • Why founders shouldn't share too much information with early investors • How Alex's approach to fundraising changed through his Seed to Series D rounds • Why founders should always be selling their product • How picking board members is a form of marriage, and what founders should prioritize when picking them • Why Deel raised a Series A and B in a three month span despite only burning $300k since closing its Seed round • How deep pocketed investors unlock optionality as a company scales • The benefits to taking on lots of angel investors • How Deel prioritized international expansion as it grew • Deel's new Visa / immigration and HR AI products • Two things Alex would do differently if he could start over • The founders he most looks up to — Read the transcript: https://www.thespl.it/p/growing-deel-to-300m-arr-in-four Where to find Alex:Twitter: https://twitter.com/BouazizalexLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexbouaziz/ Where to find Turner:Newsletter: https://www.thespl.itTwitter: https://twitter.com/TurnerNovak Production and distribution by: https://www.supermix.io For sponsorship inquiries: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSebvhBlDDfHJyQdQWs8RwpFxWg-UbG0H-VFey05QSHvLxkZPQ/viewform

In this episode, Andrew and Scott speak with John Zimmer, co-founder and President of Lyft, the on-demand transportation company. John describes Lyft's response to the challenges presented by COVID-19 and shares his vision for the future of mobility. The conversation covers John's views on continuous innovation as well as the enduring value of hospitality.
The ride-hailing company Lyft is no stranger to a challenge. As co-founder and president John Zimmer explains on this episode, Lyft has survived through hard times - and later flourished - by focusing on what it does best: Providing affordable and enjoyable transportation options to customers. But COVID-19 has dealt the company a punishing blow, forcing Lyft to lay off 17% of its workforce. Hosts Adam Lashinsky and Beth Kowitt discuss the company’s thinking on diversification, as well as its position on California’s Proposition 22 ballot initiative, which would exempt companies like Lyft and its behemoth rival, Uber, from classifying its drivers as employees. Also in this episode: Richard Ezike, a Senior Policy Associate at the Urban Institute, discusses the proper balance between the public and private sectors in an ideal transportation system. It’s December 2008, and two friends and fellow tech entrepreneurs, Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick, can't get a taxi. Camp’s already obsessed with the idea of a service that summons a private driver with the push of a button, but now Kalanick gets the appeal. Together, they'll build Uber, and do whatever it takes to reign supreme. Meanwhile, recent college grads John Zimmer and Logan Green channel their shared passion for the environment into the creation of a carpooling startup for long rides. But pretty quickly, they realize they need to service short trips, too, and Lyft is born. But in order to succeed, they have to convince people to jump in a car with a complete stranger. And, they’ll have to go up against Uber in a battle for ridesharing supremacy. Listen ad-free on Wondery+ here
Everything starts with transportation, says John Zimmer, co-founder and president of Lyft. And even though ride sharing is sharply down, transportation remains key – for essential workers and for our supply chain. So Lyft is flexing some new muscles, says John. They recently launched a delivery service so they can help get supplies where they need to go – and put drivers on the road. They’ve also spent over a million dollars on protective equipment so that both drivers and riders can be protected; and began providing free and discounted rides to both essential workers and people in need of transportation. John’s hope is that by Lyft staying true to its mission, they’ll come out successful on the other side.

2019 is expected to be the year of the unicorn on Wall Street. A number of privately held companies valued at more than $1 billion are expected to launch initial public offerings in 2019. Lyft filed its S-1 registration statement to go public on March 1. Lyft has consistently lost money on operations, but its chief executive officer John Zimmer has long suggested that deploying autonomous vehicles will reduce their operating costs dramatically, leading to big profits. Lyft has started limited autonomous operations (level 4) in several cities, including Las Vegas. START IT UP Podcast - EP 17 นี้ครับ
Boss Files with Poppy Harlow: Conversations about business, leadership and innovation
As the race for ride-hailing services Lyft and Uber to go public, Lyft co-founder and President John Zimmer believes there is nothing for his company to admire about rival Uber. He admits eliminating car ownership is their biggest business goal, explains why expanding to China is a risky market, and share how the company is committed to improving safety for all its passengers and drivers. He also opens up about the personal struggles he has faced as a Silicon Valley leader. Produced by Haley Draznin, CNN.
Next up in our series of episodes from the How I Built This Summit: John Zimmer, co-founder of Lyft. John sat down with Guy Raz in front of a live audience in San Francisco last month to talk about Lyft's visions for the future of transportation – and their fierce competition with Uber. Coming up next month: three more episodes from the Summit – so keep checking your podcast feed every Thursday.
DeRay, Clint, Sam, and Brittany discuss the overlooked news, including the population decline in Chicago's public schools, how jury selection is shaped by racism, affirmative action, and telling fact from opinion. Valerie Jarrett and John Zimmer join DeRay to talk about Lyft and how they're helping Americans exercise their right to vote.
In today's transportation landscape, opening the Lyft app on your phone is a sign of intent. It means that wherever you're going, you've decided you won't be biking, or walking, or taking the bus. Maybe you'll share the ride with a stranger, but you're definitely making the trip in a car. Lyft cofounder and president John Zimmer is trying to rejigger that timeline.
In 2006, John Zimmer was a college student and ride-hailing wasn't yet "a thing." But a class on green cities got him thinking about the glut of underused cars on the road. Eventually, he co-founded Lyft, a company that has helped make ride-hailing a fixture of American urban living. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," an update with Kyle Ewing, who almost set fire to his living room making Terraslate, a tough waterproof paper.
Before Lyft was Lyft, it was a struggling California startup called Zimride. Cofounder and CEO Logan Green launched it in 2007 (the name was an ode to Zimbabwe's carpooling culture), aiming to connect college kids who needed rides with those who had cars. John Zimmer, now Lyft's president, signed on with the idea that putting more people into existing cars could help cities fight emissions and traffic, all at once. In 2012, Zimride spawned Lyft, after Green and Co.
John Zimmer, cofounder and president of Lyft, merged his hospitality skills with cofounder and CEO, Logan Green's transportation expertise and started Lyft together in 2012. Hear the origin story of the company, his predictions of the autonomous vehicle impact and the future of personal car ownership. (Hint: not a big future). Plus, the very special thing he does every New Year's Eve.
This storyoriginally appeared on CityLaband is part of theClimate Deskcollaboration. Over the years, John Zimmer, the co-founder and president of Lyft, has often pointed to a class he took as an undergraduate as the source of his ideas about environmental sustainability—and by extension, Lyft's goals to create greener transportation options. The class at Cornell University was called “Green Cities.
John Zimmer, Lyft president and co-founder, joins Emily Chang on "Bloomberg Studio 1.0" to discuss the company's ride-sharing business, autonomous vehicle ambitions and rivalry with Uber.

In this episode of Look West California Assemblymember Evan Low talks about his experiences with traffic growing up in the Bay Area and has a conversation with Lyft co-founder John Zimmer about how millennials view car ownership differently than previous generations and how that could result in redesigned cities of the future.
In this episode, we are continuing our Inside Business Mastery series with an exclusive interview between Tony and John Zimmer: the co-founder and president of the massively popular ride-sharing service Lyft. 2017 was a banner year for Lyft. The San Francisco-based company expanded its coverage to 95% of the United States. And the number of rides per year reached a staggering 375.5 million, which is particularly impressive when you consider that the number was just 162.5 million in 2015. Part of that explosive growth can credited towards gaining more market share from its biggest competitor. When customers saw Lyft’s values-first, passion over profits motives, many opted out of the dominant ride-sharing platform to start supporting the company with a social purpose. But for Zimmer, it’s not about unseating the competition. It’s about becoming a viable alternative to your own car, and ultimately, reinventing the entire transportation landscape. Tony and John dive into John’s roots in the hospitality industry, the big problem with the existing transportation infrastructure, and how he’s on a mission to create a better service for everyone. Because disrupting the transportation industry is just the beginning - Lyft is set to pave a new path forward when it comes to how we see our vehicles, how we share rides, and how we can ultimately create a new network of transportation that is all about efficiency.
It takes a lot of hard work to become an effective leader. In this Master Class episode of "Success! How I Did It," top executives and tech CEOs reveal their secrets to being a successful leader in any industry. Buzzfeed’s Jonah Peretti, Lyft’s John Zimmer, Fox News’ Dana Perino, and more share their insights and best tips.

John Zimmer is the cofounder and president of the ride-hailing service Lyft, which has faced a fierce competitor in Uber since the beginning. Lyft is valued at $7.5 billion, covers 94% of the US population, and one of its biggest advantages seems to be its "nice guy" reputation. But it can be hard for nice guys not to finish last. On this episode of "Success! How I Did It," Zimmer tells us how he got rich by not caring about money, plus how he survived early startup years by living on a friend's couch and eating frozen meals from Trader Joe's.
Ridesharing wasn't a thing 12 years ago when John Zimmer was in college. But a class on green cities got him thinking about the glut of underused cars on the road, and eventually led him to co-found Lyft, a company that has helped make ridesharing a way of life.
John Zimmer - lawyer, Toastmasters master, speaker, improviser and communications coach - joined me for a conversation about how we can bring the art of communication to ANY opportunity you have. Whether you're in a courtroom, or giving a TED talk, doing improv, sitting in an interview, or standing in front of your coworkers for a meeting - these skills are essential to moving your audience. I love John's breadth of experience - and how he brings these skills to so many arenas. As he says, "The more ways you can speak, the better the speaker you can become." (Check out John's amazing website with tons of speech analysis - and, his wonderful TEDx talk!)
Lyft President John Zimmer sits down with Kara Swisher to talk about the company's transition from ridesharing to autonomous cars, the focus of a recently announced partnership with GM. He also discusses whether Lyft is being aggressive enough in its competition with Uber and the regulatory challenges both companies face in Europe. Learn more about your ad choices.
