But how do you set things up so they look as good as possible? I have a few tips for you, and I'm going to share them on today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Picture Settings. You should have options for Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Color, Tint, and Color Temperature, depending on the brand and model of the TV. Adjust the sliders in the TV Settings while comparing the appearance to the picture on your computer or device. You might not be able to get a perfect match, but I've found that I can get it pretty close. A Reminder for Success Regardless of which method you use for displaying images on an LCD TV, allow for time beforehand to set up and test your configuration. It's easy to forget when the share buttons are and other settings for your presentation. If it's an important once in a lifetime occasion, such as a wedding reception, practice at home before you get on location. Make notes as to where the settings are for your devices, and make a few dry runs to get everything dialed in. They started this experiment back in October 2022. They have some key findings out which led them to conclude that thin LCD TVs break faster under prolonged use.  They concluded: The goal of RTINGS.com's ongoing 100 TV longevity test is to push TVs to the limits of their durability to examine failure points as they happen. One clear trend we've observed and investigated is that thin, edge-lit LCD TVs fail prematurely compared to LCD TVs with other backlighting technology. The results of this investigation are unequivocal: edge-lit TVs are inherently prone to significant durability issues, including warped reflector sheets, cracked light guide plates, and burnt-out LEDs due to concentrated heat. These problems manifest after prolonged use at maximum brightness, posing a significant risk to their long-term reliability. This analysis, corroborated by real-world observations, highlights a crucial consideration for  consumers and the industry. As manufacturers continue to push for thinner designs, addressing these durability concerns is imperative to ensure consumer satisfaction and    trust. For consumers in the market for an LCD TV to whom the durability of their purchase is important, we recommend prioritizing models with better heat distribution, such as direct-lit or FALD TVs, for improved longevity and performance.

During the Zenith of the Civil Rights Movement, Lyndon B Johnson became president and made a decided mark on American Politics, Economics, Race Relations, and Christianity, and none of it for the better. In his inaugural address, LBJ proclaimed: “This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America.” Let's break down that War on Poverty, its implementation, and effects today and see how beneficial or rather detrimental these policies have been on Race, Religion, and Family in America. Economics: Let's look at the results of this War on Poverty from an Economic standpoint. The goal of the War on Poverty was to reduce the percentage of Americans who were living in poverty. Did it work? Apparently not, but it may have done something more harmful…. According to the US Census Bureau's own statistics, poverty was on the decline before the so-called war on Poverty. Despite 22 trillion dollars (as of 2012) having been spent on this war, we still see roughly the same percentage of people below the poverty line. So what happened to the money being spent on the less fortunate? How is it remotely possible for so much money to be missing? Well, as with many such government programs, there are lies, darn lies, and then there are statistics. The way that these statistics are calculated always omits the amount spent on welfare. This may seem trivial, but with $9,000 spent on each recipient, on average, that is more than enough to raise many recipients above the poverty line, if it was reported as income. These people are no longer living in the mirey conditions that we connote with the War on Poverty. Roughly $1.00 out of $2.40 is actually reported by the US Department of Labor. In these families we see the following conditions as noted by Robert Rector Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation: “Eighty percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, at the beginning of the War on Poverty, only about 12 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning. Nearly three-quarters have a car or truck; 31 percent have two or more cars or trucks.[9] Nearly two-thirds have cable or satellite television. Two-thirds have at least one DVD player, and a quarter have two or more. Half have a personal computer; one in seven has two or more computers. More than half of poor families with children have a video game system such as an Xbox or PlayStation. Forty-three percent have Internet access. Forty percent have a wide-screen plasma or LCD TV. A quarter have a digital video recorder system such as a TIVO. Ninety-two percent of poor households have a microwave.” So, why the bait and switch? One would imagine that government would desire to take credit for raising people out of poverty. But that is never how government works. Politics: From a political standpoint, let me ask you… would you be better off solving people's problems… or running on the same issues with a built in voter base, imprisoned by class and racial divisions? LBJ said himself that: “These Negroes, they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. For if we don't move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there'll be no way of stopping them, we'll lose the filibuster and there'll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It'll be Reconstruction all over again.” Johnson was no friend of the Civil Rights movement, but rather a brilliant tactician. He is also quoted as saying: "I'll have them n-words voting Democratic for two hundred years." This is not the man of the Civil Rights movement, he was a Democrat politician whose party was losing power to the engine that was driving the Civil Rights movement, the Republican Party. So how would Johnson change the face of the Democrat Party? These were the same people that had held slaves and had enforced Jim Crow, by dirty cop, gun confiscations, and lynch mobs…. This would be quite the magic trick. However, if there is one thing that can make people forget the past, it is prosperity, or the promise of it. During the Great Society Era, LBJ exchanged the ruthless Democrat policies that reoriented the Democratic Party as the rich uncle who would buy the favor of the population that it had spent centuries oppressing. All of this was at the expense of the taxpayer, but also of the supposed beneficiaries. Culture: If you look at what really happened during the War on Poverty, you'll see that, although the amount of people in poverty had been trending downward for 15 years, 3~5 years after the War on Poverty programs were implemented, that downward trend stopped. In fact, according to the Census Bureau's own numbers, the decline of poverty appears to effectively be arrested since the War on Poverty has started. We know that the counting is dishonest, when you consider the fact that the average welfare recipient receives $9,000 a year from the government, but there is something else that is wrong here. We see a culture of dependence that has grown from the government's intervention. Why this has occurred is perhaps the most interesting result of this miss-happed societal experiment. We see here that the anti-marriage policies of the War on Poverty have created a new societal trend, the unwed mother. Indeed, this should not come as a surprise when we not only recognize the 60s as the time of the Boomer Generation's rejection of Traditional Marriage, but we also see that many women were incentivized to have children for the welfare benefits, and enjoyed a no-fault divorce settlement to boot with child support. According to Robert Recto at Heritage: “Today, unwed childbearing and the resulting growth of single-parent homes is the most important cause of official child poverty.[25] If poor women who give birth outside of marriage were married to the fathers of their children, two-thirds would immediately be lifted out of official poverty and into self-sufficiency.[26] The welfare state has also reduced self-sufficiency by providing economic rewards to able-bodied adults who do not work or who work comparatively little. The low level of parental work is a major cause of official child poverty and the lack of self-sufficiency. Even in good economic times, the median poor family with children has only 1000 hours of parental work per year. This is the equivalent of one adult working 20 hours per week. If the amount of work performed in poor families with children was increased to the equivalent of one adult working full-time through the year, the poverty rate among these families would drop by two-thirds.[27]” There are stories of agents and social workers coaxing people to not marry for the benefits of this new welfare state. This has generated not only a reliance upon the government for mothers, but a fatherless generation who now live as their parents do, single mothers and divorced or single men, with no intergenerational wealth. THIS is the systemic discrimination of modern America. We have watched society crumble beneath the weight of this sick idea, that man is somehow basically good and needs the right environment. When you look at the world around you, it is clear to see that this simply isn't so. Philosophy: So what causes poverty? LBJ said in his inaugural speech that he would strike at the “heart of the causes of poverty”. What are these causes really and how would we go about remedying poverty? On one hand the economist and philosopher Amartya Sen proposed that poverty should be re-understood in terms of capability deprivation. Here again, we see man attempting to make poverty about exterior circumstances, instead of a condition within man himself. Ignoring human nature, however, has far-reaching consequences. In this framework, poverty will be very hard to measure, and such a change disconnects the concept of poverty from more than a century of detailed empirical and theoretical research. Amartya Sen (1983), however, insists that poverty is not just relative, but also absolute. In short, in Sen's framework, the poor are poor because that is who they always have been and ever will be. If this were true, then a communistic structure would be the only compassionate way forward. A libertarian approach to poverty would seek to rekindle that spirit, rather than expand a government that sucks the oxygen out of families, private charities, and the very poor that it purports to help. But as Christian that poverty is a result of a broken world. And we as humans follow the path of less resistance, it is easier to work at McDonald's and then get fired to get unemployment, than it is to excel and work hard. It is easier to fly below the poverty line radar and cash government aid checks than it is to work 40 hours a week. Theology: First off, let's acknowledge God's heart for the poor. The Lord has commanded us to give to the poor in Proverbs 19:17 He says: “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” In Pro 28:27 we also have a blessing promised from God: “He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.” In Deuteronomy, we see that God put laws in place to protect the poor, the Israelite people had just come out of profound slavery and poverty and God wanted them to remember from where they had come: In Deu 15:8-11 we see God say “But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee. Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.” God never intended His people to be stingy. In fact, just as God has lavished His Grace upon us, we are to also lavish it upon our families, communities, and strangers. We see this in 1Jn 3:17 “But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” A lack of generosity is seen here as a sign of one who does not know God. However, not only do we see a call to be generous to others in the Scripture, but a call to industriousness. There is a balance. In 1Ti 5:8 we see this about folks who do not provide for their families: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” In the Proverbs, we see that a lack of work ethic, is a sinful state in God's eyes. Pro 10:4-5 says “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.” Similarly, we see in 2 Thessalonians 3:10: “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” It would seem that God prefers an individualized work ethic as well as an individualized charity. The government should not make you work or provide charity, but both are commanded by God. In Pro 3:9 Our work is supposed to honor God: “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. “ This command to honor God with our wealth also comes with a promise of provision. In Mal 3:10-11 we also see what Proverbs 3:9-10 looks like in practice: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.” What we have is not our own. It all belongs to our Heavenly Father. When we replace Church giving with Government spending, we replace God with Government. Samsung's MicroLED Bet We first stumbled across Samsung's new MicroLED technology when we were reading up on CES, and specifically the giant 146” TV the South Korean electronics giant had on display this year. A TV so big, they actually just call it “the wall.” The technology intrigued us, and we thought it may have intrigued a few of you as well, so we took it on ourselves to dive a bit deeper into what it is and why we, as lovers of great televisions, should care. If you've been with the show for a long time, and we're talking about a really, really long time, you might remember how we used to get quite geeky in some episodes. The episode numbers were probably in the double digits, but there were so many TV technologies available back in those days that we dove deep into each one to explain, all the way down to the electron and photon level, how they worked. The episode on plasma emissive display technology was especially compelling. Today's show won't go that deep, but if Samsung is really betting on MicroLED, and choosing it over OLED altogether, it probably makes sense to dive in to some of the particulars and see how the two technologies differ, how they are similar, and the relative pros and cons of each. One of them may very well become the next dominant display technology. But just because one may be technologically superior to the other doesn't ensure it will win out in the end. Rest in peace, plasma. Rest in peace. Samsung in the Market According to a ZDNet article entitled Samsung's Micro LED bet will define its future in TVs, while Samsung continues to hold the number one spot in worldwide televisions sales, and has for quite some time, that number one position is anything but secure. Samsung needs to be worried about the future of its display division and has no margin to rest on its laurels while the rest of the industry pushes forward with OLED. Samsung needs to join the OLED revolution, or find their own alternative answer. They've chosen to go with MicroLED as that alternative. The article states: “Unlike its other businesses, Samsung's position as number one in TVs has never been cemented, that is accepted by its rivals, the media, and public, and this frustrates the VD {visual display} business no end. In memory chips, the company has been number one for over 20 years with a market share hovering around 50 percent. In smartphones, it's the biggest seller of Android phones, despite China eating away at its market share. And although having been number one in TVs for 13 years, a market share of around mid-20 percent translates as Samsung having to square up to more challengers than it does in chips and phones.” Samsung has tried, and continues to try, OLED alternatives for its top-of-the-line television sets. They released their quantum dot (QD) LCD TVs in 2015 and later renamed them to QLED sets in 2017. But whatever name you use, Quantum Dot or QLED, neither surpassed OLED in color, contrast or clarity.  Although QLED is a great improvement on traditional LCD or LED based sets, it simply isn't a big enough improvement to take on OLED. MicroLED is a much better OLED rival, but unfortunately it is far more difficult to produce and commercialize than the current QLED sets. QLED is an upgrade to existing technology and manufacturing. Like OLED,. MicroLED is a brand new way of doing things. How it Works MicroLED and OLED share a number of common traits, some of which are common to Plasma technology as well. The primary similarity, which is also a primary differentiator between both of them and the existing LCD/LED televisions on the market, is that they are both emissive, or self-emitting, technologies. That means each pixel is its own light source, unlike current LCD sets that require a dedicated backlight. A typical LCD TV uses a CCFL tube as the backlight, while the newer “LED” televisions use LEDs in place of the bulb as the light source. For those who own or owned a plasma, you know there are huge advantages for emissive displays, namely improved contrast ratios and deep, deep blacks. There are, of course, differences as well. While OLED uses organic material to create the diodes (thus the letter O in the name) MicroLEDs are really just the same, traditional LEDs that have been around forever, just shrunken down to microscopic sizes and placed into an array. A MicroLED is so small in fact, that each one measures less than 100 µm - less than the width of a human hair. While the underlying LED technology isn't new, the manufacturing process is very new, and creating a full panel array using such tiny LEDs is not an easy thing to do. Scaling the technology up to TV sizes from smaller form factors like smartphones and smartwatches, has proven to be quite difficult. How They Compare In the battle of MicroLED vs OLED, as we've already discussed, both emit light on their own without the need for a backlight. And it turns out they both have very similar performance capabilities. They both have a contrast ratio of essentially 10,000 to 1. Since both have the ability to completely darken a pixel, they are equal when it comes to perfect, inky blacks. On the resolution side, you can fit more MicroLED pixels per square inch, which should give it an advantage in resolution as we scale up beyond 4K. Both are quite a bit more efficient, thus consume less power, than LCD sets. While both are better than LCD, MicroLED does outperform OLED in power consumption or brightness to power efficiency. So the TV can consume far less power than OLED, or the manufacturer could dramatically improve brightness for daytime viewing without consuming any more power than an OLED TV. However similar they may be, MicroLED does maintain a few additional advantages over OLED beyond just power efficiency. The first is the lifespan of the television. OLED uses organic material that degrades over time so the pixels die out faster. But MicroLED does not, it uses the standard inorganic material of its larger LED cousins that doesn't degrade as quickly, and the sets should last longer as a result. Like plasma before it, OLED has been dogged by burn-in issues. MicroLEDs should be far less susceptible, if even susceptible at all. And MicroLED will also make it easier for Samsung to make a plethora of screen sizes - you're just talking about more or less of the tiny LEDs. The manufacturing needs to be figured out, but the potential is there. Each OLED television, on the other hand, is made from a set substrate size. To make a different size television, you need a different substrate entirely. The Future We survived for a long time with LCD, DLP and LCOS rear projection televisions as our primary options for high definition TVs. As they faded, we continued to survive with LCD and Plasma both occupying unique niches in the market. Eventually plasma fell and we only had one true option available for a while. It is entirely possible that OLED and MicroLED will exist side by side in the market for quite some time. Like flat panel LCD before it, one may emerge as the winner, or like rear projection LCD, DLP and LCOS, both may go the way of the dodo in favor of yet another, newer, better technology that we haven't even seen yet.

Samsung Q9F QLED  TV REVIEW (RTINGS.COM) Back in May we introduced you to RTINGS.COM and mentioned that we would feature some of their TV reviews on our site from time to time. This week is the first of such reviews and we start off with the Samsung Q9F QLED (Buy Now 65 inch $4997 75 inch $9997). Compared to most other Samsung TVs, it really feels like a big step up which is worthy of their flagship TV. All of the parts are well made and feel high quality. The Samsung Q9F LED TV has a very good picture quality. The excellent contrast ratio, paired with the good black uniformity, make the Q9 a very good choice for a dark home theater setting. It can display very deep blacks and can reproduce dark scenes very well. When set in a bright room, the Q9 is as good as it gets, since it can get very bright to fight glare from a bright lamp of a near sunny window and it can deal with reflections amazingly. Unfortunately, the Q9F's gray uniformity is sub-par and dirty screen effect is visible on wide panning shots or when watching some sports like football or hockey. The viewing angle is also poor and as a result, the Q9's best picture quality is restricted to a narrow zone in front of the TV. Finally, the Q9 can really make HDR content shine with its high HDR peak brightness and large color volume. Small highlights can get very bright and the colors it can reproduce are really a step ahead of the competition. The only downside here is the limitation of the local dimming, which is poorly implemented and can't really help to make black deepers. The Samsung Q9F sounds quite poor, which is unfortunate for a TV of this status. While it isn't unbearable, it is worth spending on a set of speakers for an upgrade to the audio experience. The Q9F uses Samsung's 2017 Tizen platform, also called Smart Hub, which is very simple and easy to navigate and has a powerful voice command feature. The TV's remote has a built-in microphone for these voice commands, which can do many things like changing inputs and settings and searching for content. The center of the TV's interface is the Smart Hub itself, which provides access to apps and settings in an easy to navigate fashion. Menu animations sometimes have frame drops and lag, worse than last year's Smart Hub. The remote unfortunately has very few buttons, requiring the user to use voice commands or navigate the Smart Hub to do most things. Smartphones and tablets can cast content to the TV's apps, and content can be played from a USB drive in one of the TV's three USB ports. Test Results: Design 9.5 Picture Quality 7.9 Motion 8.9 Inputs 8.6 Sound Quality 5.7 Smart Features 8.0 Usage Ratings: Mixed Usage 8.0 Movies 7.7 TV Shows 7.8 Sports 7.8 Video Games 8.5 HDR Movies 8.6 HDR Gaming 8.5 PC Monitor 7.2 The Samsung Q9F QLED is a great 4k LCD TV with very good picture quality and exceptional rendition of colors. It can display a very wide range of colors and gets bright, making it quite good for HDR. Its input lag is quite low, and fast moving content shows very little blur, making it a good choice for both gaming and sports watching. Unfortunately, though, picture quality steeply declines when the Q9F is viewed from an angle, and its and its screen isn't the most uniform.

HDTV Buying Guide 2016 It's beginning to look a lot like whatever holiday you may be celebrating this holiday season. Or that you may not be celebrating - not that there's anything wrong with that. But we grew up celebrating Christmas, so we know what we're hoping to see under the tree with our names on it. If you happen to be lucky enough to have budget for a new HDTV this Christmas season, but still aren't sure which one to buy, we've got you covered. Like last year, we're dropping the budget categories, and the screen size categories and jumping right to our top picks. We each pick three TVs and one ultimate HDTV present for you to consider. If you don't have the HDTV buyer's guide from last year handy, here are couple of the sets we talked about along with their prices. Only two sets from last year are still available for sale direct thru Amazon. And for both their prices went down. If you'd like to make the argument to the finance committee that you don't know what will happen with prices so you should grab one now before the price goes up, we suggest referencing last year's buyer's guide where multiple sets did actually increase in price by one year later. Samsung UN65J6200 65-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV (2015 Model) (was $1198, now $948) Samsung UN75J6300 75-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV (was $1997, now $1498) Braden's Picks TCL 40FS3800 40-Inch 1080p Roku Smart LED TV ($243) Life is all about trade-offs. Anyone who tells you differently is selling something. Sometimes you want the best of the best, sometimes you just want the best for the least you can spend. As someone who uses a TCL TV with the built-in Roku smart TV interface on the daily, I can tell you first hand that built-in Roku is solid gold. The TV is mounted to the wall and plugged into power. That's it. We can get to Pandora, et. al. for when we want music or Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, ESPN, HBO for TV or video content. For anyone looking for a super flexible second TV, TCL is a great, inexpensive choice. If 40” isn't the right size, they have a 32” for $169, 48” for $329, 50” for $399, or a 55” for $448. LG 65" OLED65B6P OLED 4K HDR Ultra HD FLAT TV ($2599) On the other hand, if you want the best of the best, OLED is the only option. Better than plasma on color and black levels, excellent detail and motion clarity, with 4K and HDR support. You really can't pick a more high performing screen than this LG. At 65 inches, it isn't the biggest TV you can find, but for most family rooms or home entertainment “dens” a 65 inch TV is the perfect size.  This screen will blow you away, and anyone you have over to see it, with any content you put on it. Put some true 4K or HDR video sources up and you'll struggle to hold back the drool. With over a billion rich colors at its disposal, this LG OLED TV delivers a theater-quality experience from the comfort of your sofa. OLED HDR delivers a stunning high dynamic range picture, including support for Dolby Vision content. VIZIO M60-C3 60-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV ($889) Of course, there is a middle ground. You want 4K and some future-proof capabilities without totally crushing your budget and having to eat canned beans for a few months until you can recover from the expense of your TV. We get that. If that's you, check out this Vizio. It's a 4K LED, but lacks HDR. So kinda future proof, but not fully, excellent picture quality, but not the gold standard, and under $1000, not a couple months salary. This TV is an excellent blend of incredible performance and incredible value. Perhaps a bit dated, it was the highest rated TV at CNET for 2015. That was in 2015, but because of the age, you can get it for a steal. A 60” 4K TV for less than $900? Yeah, that should be on your list. Ara's Picks This year every TV on my list is 4K and supports HDR. If you want a budget TV they are easy to find. For 2016 I want the best TV out there for the money. LG Electronics OLED55B6P Flat 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart OLED TV ($1997) OLED for under $2000! In not the curved model either. Deep plasma like blacks, HDR, and wide color gamut. Watching this TV will be like looking out a window! Other features include WebOS 3.0 and Harman Kardon sound. Just be sure to calibrate this TV to get the best picture possible! VIZIO SmartCast™ P-Series™ 65” Class Ultra HD HDR Home Theater Display ($1999) Amazon sells a lot of Vizio TVs however, if you want this one you won't find it there. You can buy direct from Vizio or at  Bestbuy. This TV checks off all the boxes in what you need in a 4K TV. Dolby Vision, HDR, Clean Simple Design, and a Tablet remote!. This version of the P-Series has 128 active LED zones which gives some pretty impressive black levels for a LED based LCD TV.  This TV looks great even when it's off. Sony XBR65X850D 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart TV ($1398) This is my “budget” 4K TV and it's a pretty capable TV in it's own right. It's the one I will buy for remodel project I am working on. Like the other TVs it supports HDR and  Wide Color Gamut. Sony has developed a proprietary X1 chip that makes HDR, color, and upconversion look incredible. Sony is making great TVs again and at this price it costs less than the Vizio! Ultimate Christmas Present: Sony XBR75Z9D 75-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV ($8998) Rodney Williams (Blu-ray Reviews) and I drove up to Sony Pictures to see the unveiling of this TV a few months ago and I have been wanting one ever since. It's still a little pricey but if you can afford it it is one beautiful TV. It takes everything in the XBR line that I mentioned above and makes it better. They updated the X1 chip to the X1 Extreme which produce color with more detail and fewer artifacts than what a typical TV does. Upconverted content looks like it's native resolution. Motion is smoother and contrast is better. I saw this TV compared to the LG OLED side by side and I felt it had a better picture. You can decide if you buy this now or wait until it comes down in price. Either way you won't regret how good the picture looks! NEC X981UHD-2 98" 4K Ultra HD LED TV ($29,115) Okay, we'll admit, we don't expect many in our audience to rush out and buy this TV. Heaven knows we never would. But when you look at the total install cost to get a 100” front projection system in your home, it adds up. Make that a 100” 4K front projection system and you're spending quite a bit more. This set from NEC gets you almost that same size, in 4K, with a brightness level that nearly removes any ambient light considerations. If you were thinking about putting in a 4K front projection system, the X981 from NEC could actually save you a bit of coin. You can tell from the comments that a few Amazon users wanted to get a crazy thread going, unfortunately they just weren't witty enough. Feel free to take a crack at it tho.

Home Theater News and Talk Apple introduces iPhone 7 ($649), iPhone 7 Plus ($769), and wireless earbuds The company later revealed the new devices would come in 32GB, 128 GB, and 256GB sizes. Prices start at $649/£599 for the iPhone 7 and $769/£719 for the iPhone 7 Plus. Pre-orders begin on Friday, September 9, and devices will ship on Friday, September 16. iOS 10 will arrive on September 13 to support the new releases.   Sony unveils new versions of PlayStation 4 Sony Interactive Entertainment, a division of Sony Corp (6758.T), unveiled on Wednesday two new versions of its PlayStation 4 Console in an effort to help Sony maintain its sales lead over Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.T). The PlayStation 4 Pro, which will launch Nov. 10, will support higher resolution and more realistic imagery by enabling 4k resolution and higher dynamic range (HDR), said Andrew House, chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, at a PlayStation event in New York City Tuesday announcing the new products. The console will cost $399. Additionally, the company unveiled a slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient version of its PlayStation 4 Console, which will come out Sept. 15 and will cost $299.   IBM aims to weave Watson smarts into the home IBM plans to integrate its Watson intelligence into gadgets and appliances such as washing machines, security cameras and wireless headphones. The company has partnered with Panasonic, Whirlpool, Nokia and Bragi to create Watson-equipped internet of things devices for the home.   LG readies new OLED, quantum dot TVs LG is preparing to debut an OLED TV with "an exclusive hardware platform" at CES in January, and is readying a lineup of quantum dot TVs to compete with Samsung at a level below LG's most premium sets. The quantum dot TVs will utilize a quantum dot filter on an LCD TV and sell for approximately $1,000 less than LG's OLED TVs.   Amazon updates Fire TV features Amazon on Tuesday announced a software update for its Fire TV and Fire TV Stick that adds features to the devices. New features include voice search on apps, recommended viewing options from HBO and Netflix, and sports updates from Alexa.

2016 TWICE VIP Award Nominations The VIPs are TWICE's (This Week In Consumer Electronics, a weekly trade magazine for professionals in the consumer electronics field) annual products awards, and only retailers and distributors can vote to honor the products that have made the biggest difference in their business. The awards are based on product features, product design and value to consumers. After voting is completed, ballots will be compiled and reviewed by TWICE editors. Winners will be announced in the Aug. 22 print issue of TWICE. Product categories are vast, anything you can imagine in consumer electronics, ranging from refrigerators and washers and dryers to dash cams, from computers to networked window coverings. And of course a few categories are in the home theater and audio visual categories. Those are the devices we'll take a look at. Remember that these are the products deemed best by retailers and distributors and they have a slightly different point of view than the rest of us who simply use the products. 4DX: The Savior of Cinema? Movie theaters are faltering, at least in our opinion. The large format home theater has reached a price point where it is attainable for many of us. And TVs are so big, you can practically create a large format home theater with just an LCD TV. No need for a projector or a screen or the hassle of running wires to the back of the room. And if anyone can have a huge home theater, what's the allure of the traditional movie theater?   We've talked for a long time about the cinema owners and operators needing to modernize. They can no longer rely on being the only game in town. To date, the biggest moves in making the old school cinema house more attractive have come at the concession stand. Full restuarants with in theater service, full bars with beer, wine and cocktails delivered to you while you watch. It totally transforms the experience and some of those theaters are doing really well.   Other theaters have renovated the room itself. They have larger, more plush seating that fully reclines, or small couches you can share with a date. The rooms themselves are more elegant, mores intimate than the giant sticky packed houses we've been used to in the past. Some even allow you to reserve your seat in advance so you don't have to worry about getting bad seats. This helps, but even so, most of us would still prefer our couch at home.   4DX To the Rescue But what if the cinema owners could differentiate on technology again. They used to be the only game in town for big screens, surround sound, booming subwoofers. But now we all have those. Then they were the only option for watching movies in 3D. Then that technology made its way home, where we all hate it just as much as we did in the theaters. The next big thing very well may be what South Korean company CJ 4DPLEX is calling 4DX technology.   If you've been to a 4D movie experience at a theme park, odds are you're familiar with the concept. 4DX is more than just picture and sound. It combines 3D video and multi-channel surround sound with moving seats, wind, mist, and event scents and smells, al synchronized to the movie, to provide a totally immersive experience. Your chair moves in sync with the movie, wind blows when you're moving or something flies past you on screen, It all works in harmony to bring you into the movie going experience.   A theater can be built or retrofitted with special equipment to support 4DX features, which include: Seat Motion (tilt left, tilt right, tilt forward, tilt backward, raise up, drop down) Vibration Leg Tickler Back Poker Face Air Jets Left and Right Neck Air Jets Water Spray Wind Lightning Fog Scents (from a collection of 1000 scents) Bubbles Rainstorm Snowstorm Heated Air   Due to the complexity of the equipment needed to provide this total body experience, theaters must be specially built or retrofitted to accommodate it. In many cases, the work is so drastic theaters can't even be retrofitted but need to be totally stripped down and rebuilt. And it isn't cheap. In 2011, the cineplex company Cinépolis invested $25 million and partnered with CJ Group to open up to 11 4DX theaters. That's roughly $2.3 million per room, and there's no telling how much the partnership offset the total cost.   For starters, every seat has to move, and they all move independently. So you have the seats and the actuators to buy and install, and the wiring to the control unit to make sure they move on time. Then there are the fans and misters, some have these built into the seatbacks, so that's already included, unless you're in the front row. Then there are the scent bubble machines. And of course the controlling units to make sure all of these items fire at just the right time to draw you into the movie. It's complex and complicated.   Getting 4DX at Home So what are the odds we'll ever get anything like 4DX in the home? That's a tough one. Looking at the surface, it's probably a long shot. But there are so many technologies in the home today that we never could have fathomed would be there had we took a guess 10 years ago, so if history has taught us anything, it's that someone will find a way to make it happen. Entrepreneurs listen up. We're looking for you to show up on Shark Tank with an idea, or set of ideas, for getting 4DX into the home.   There are multiple challenges in making this a reality. First are the chairs. Sure there are things like D-Box controlled seats available now, but the 4DX seats take it to the next level. And you have to have one for anyone that may come over to watch a movie. Its almost like the 3D glasses dilemma, but instead of a couple hundred dollars for a few extra pairs of glasses, you're talking about tens of thousands to add additional seating. Braden's family alone would need 7 chairs - not even sure 7 of them would fit in the theater room.   Next you'd need devices for the wind and mist and maybe even the smells.  You might be able to get away with one scent delivery unit to fill the whole room with an odor, but who knows if that would even work. And unless you want to soak the whole theater, you'll need individual misters to hit each person or a small group of viewers. Same thing for the fans to control wind. Not a trivial install to say the least.   A reason to go out to the Movies? So let's assume we're at least a good 5 to 10 years away from anything like 4DX appearing in our homes - at least at a price that would make it attainable for most of us, is the experience compelling enough to pull you out of your home theater and into a cineplex? For kids of course, they'll love it. But they go to the movies anyways. For horror movies it could be great - get sprayed by mist when blood splatters off the screen. But for most movies it just feels too gimmicky. Like it would be fun for the first half of the movie, then you'd just want it to stop so you could watch in peace. Can you imagine a two hour long Star Tours at Disneyland?   Try it out If you want to give it a shot for yourself, there are options out there for you. Maybe nothing close by, but if you happen to be travelling somewhere with a 4DX cinema, it might be worth checking out. According to Wikipedia, as of November 2014, the 4DX technology is currently active in 28 countries: South Korea, Venezuela, China, Cambodia, Israel, Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Czech Republic, Guatemala, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Taiwan, Chile, UAE, Croatia, Ukraine, India, Indonesia, United Kingdom and the Philippines, with new theaters being prepared in the United States, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Jordan, Bahamas, and Costa Rica.   There is actually now one 4DX theater in the US. It is at Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 in Downtown Los Angeles - the first of many planned locations according to Regal. It is located at 800 West Olympic Boulevard, Los Angeles, California.

Predictions Results for 2013 At the start of each new year we look into our high def crystal ball to make our best predictions on what we think the coming year will bring in the way of HDTV and Home Theater. The ball tends to be a bit cloudy, and each year we struggle to even get close to 50%. So let's take a look at how we thought 2013 would shake out to see how we did. We listed a few “gimmes” up front. The funny thing is that our gimmes didn't even come through for us: WRONG: Apple will release its first HDTV. MAYBE: What ‘business'? The plasma business? Another Japanese TV manufacturer will walk away from the business. NOT SURE, but PROBABLY: Netflix will use more Internet traffic during Primetime. RIGHT: 4K TVs will become cheaper. Ara's Predictions: Social Media will determine whether a show stays on the air - let's face it the way Nielsen measures ratings is old and antiquated. Time to move towards the future. With Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Google+ it should be easier to determine whether a show has a following or not. Producers should be able to use these services to help them not only sell but pinpoint ads to the exact demographic watching the show. Look for Nielsen to revamp how it measures ratings. SUCCESS! Product Placement will be big - With so many DVRs out there advertisers are looking for a way to put their brand in front of you. This year I am saying that it won't be subtle but more in your face. Rather than just seeing the product look for dialog about how good the product is. There have been a few examples of this with Toyota and Bones. Look for the cell phone companies to talk about communications on any action/cop show. NOT REALLY. Still about the same as 2012. Apple will enter the home automation market - Since 2012 was the year of home automation ;-) Apple will make 2013 the year of plug and play automation. They are rumored to be interested in id8 Group R2 Studios Inc which is a startup company developing home media and automation technology. Look for Apple to tie your entertainment, lighting, and security together in a neat easy to setup package. So does this make 2013 the year of home automation? Fail. Maybe next year? We'll see a “True” smart TV - I'm not talking an Internet connected TV but more of a TV that truly has some brains. Something that can sense who is in front of it and configure itself for that viewer. If more than one person is in front of the TV then maybe go into family mode or something like that. It will be voice activated. Actually it will be a cross between GoogleTV, AppleTV and a computer. Look for Samsung to develop the first True Smart TV. Fail. Didn't quite happen yet. Movie Studios will eliminate DRM from their content - Following the lead of the music industry, the movie industry will see the err of their ways and make it easy for all of us to freely create video servers with legally owned content. This is my Hail Mary pass prediction. Probability of success.... less than 1% Total score: 1/5 for a whopping 20%. Braden's Predictions: Adios Mother Plasma - Although plasma may have given birth to the flat screen revolution, the technology will be forced into early retirement in 2013. Success! Panasonic, the stalwart supporter of plasma technology for the last few years announced they will be exiting the plasma business for good. While plasma will remain in stock for a while, Panasonic's exit spells the end for a great technology. The technology that started the flat screen revolution. Panasonic's plasma TV exit is the end of a brilliant era. I'll buy that for $300 - The average selling price for a 42” 1080p LCD TV will be $300 by the end of the year, down from $480 in 2012. Fail. Pricing stayed pretty flat, driven by advanced features and a push into LED technology. If the prices moved downward, it was only slightly, certainly not into the $300 range. Let's be more than friends - As the economy continues to struggle and the price of electronics continues to plummet, 2013 will see at least one, maybe a few large mergers or acquisitions in the consumer electronics/home theater industry. Fail. Microsoft acquired Nokia otherwise nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Bummer. Stream it to me - This year will see new release available via streaming in an all-you-can-eat subscription package. Fail. Lo and behold, this prediction still didn't happen. Yet I continue to make it every year. It'll be right eventually, you just watch. Sure you can get Prima Cinema in your home now, so maybe I should get partial credit here. But I just can't see taking partial credit on a system that costs $35,000 and $500 per movie.  If it was $3500 and $50 per movie, maybe. You can take it to grandma's house - In 2013 someone will show the prototype for a truly portable tablet computer. Not something thinner and lighter but still 10 inches by 8 inches, but something that either rolls up or folds up so you can very easily take it with you anywhere. Fail. We got thinner and lighter, but still nothing flexible or foldable. Thinner and lighter is nice, but it's an incremental change, I was looking for the game changer here, and came up empty. Total score: 1/5 for a whopping 20%.

What use is an F-call? Recently I had the opportunity to setup my radio in the bush. Having been around the metropolitan area for most of my Amateur Life to-date, that was a whole new, and I might say, very positive experience. Laying out radials across the landscape was a challenge and having set-up against the corner of the veranda of the house where I was staying meant that I could only put them out in 270 degrees, the owner frowning on the notion of running 12 meter radials through the house for some reason. The silence was amazing, no man-made noise, no clicking or buzzing from nearby appliances, overall worth the effort! Honesty requires me to point out that the local atmospherics conspired to actually making contacts on 80 and 40 meters nigh-on impossible. At the time I was unable to determine what caused the problem and research since then indicated all manner of possible causes, ranging from background cosmic noise to the LCD TV in the next room with several other options in between. Armed with that knowledge I'll spend some effort hunting next time around. I can recommend that you pick up your radio once in a while, put it in your preferred mode of transport and place yourself in another location to experience other conditions. I'd like to take the opportunity to recommend the Triplehead solution. Here is a picture of my monitor setup: it's three Samsung 22 inch widescreen monitors running FSX in 5040 x 1050 resolution. I set it up recently, and I've been having a fantastic time using it. Just in terms of immersion, it really adds a lot to the flightsimming experience. Add to that having the Virtual cockpit really scaled up, so you can see all the gauges clearly, and the panoramic view of the scenery, it's really something special. There are some things to think about. The monitors have to run the same resolution. Mine are running 1680 x 1050, and that requires a monitor that supports 57hz screen refresh rate. While LCD monitors are very inexpensive at the moment, the adapter itself isn't cheap. I've heard that the new range of Eyefinity graphics cards from ATI will be able to do something similar, without using an adapter. Pharis Congratulations to everyone who did the hamburger flight on Vatsim this weekend. I wish I could have been by my computer Saturday to join you. I was able to carve out some FS time today however, and I just finished putting together a functional trim wheel. It ain't pretty, but it works great, and it's very cheap to throw together--maybe even free, depending on what you've got kicking around the house. Supplies: 1 coffee can 1 old USB mouse that was collecting dust (with scroll wheel) 1 wooden chopstick (free with order of Shanghai noodles) 1 small screw some scotch tape 1 free usb port To get this contraption functioning like a trim wheel, all you need to do is check the"use your mouse wheel as a trim wheel" function in the miscellaneous section of a registered copy of FSUIPC. If you don't have a registered copy of FSUIPC, you can download the free "RealTrim" module (http://code.google.com/p/fscode/wiki/RealTrim) and enable "mouse wheel as trim wheel" under the "modules" menu inside the sim.   The only glitch I had testing the trim wheel for the first time was that the trim wheel in the VC was turning in the opposite direction I was turning my coffee can lid. I solved this by installing a free program called "X-Mouse Button Control" (http://www.highrez.co.uk/downloads/XMouseButtonControl.htm), which includes an option for inverting mouse wheel scrolling.   Like I say, it may not be much to look at, but it really does work great, and having a trim wheel adds a lot to the simming experience. So if you've got an extra mouse, some other junk, and about 15 minutes to slap it together, give it a try.     I have only recently happened upon the podcast but I LOVE IT. I am an avid Uncontrolled Airspace listener and you guys fill that niche for the Flightsim world. I noticed that lately you guys have been "coming of age" on VATSIM...good for you! Your life is almost complete. I highly suggest taking a look at FSEconomy.com and would love to see a review of your crew's thoughts of it. Basically FSEconomy adds the ability to own, maintain, and operate aircraft, and FBOs within flightsim (FS9, FSX, X-Plane). The best part is that it is another layer that you can add to your flightsim experience, just like VATSIM. Best of all, it is 100% free. Here is a little blurb that I hope piques your interest: FSEconomy is a realistic economical environment for General Aviation flight simmers! You are a "pilot for hire", and you will use various aircraft to fly passengers and/or cargo (sometimes called "jobs" or "assignments") that are scattered throughout the flight simulator world. FSE does not simulate a "scheduled airline" type of environment, thus all available assignments appear randomly, and are destined to other random airpots. As an FSE pilot, you must choose the best available aircraft for the job given the assignment and revenue. You must either rent an aircraft or use one that you own. You can choose a career on your own or you can form a group of several pilots. Groups can collectively own an aircraft and share it amongst themselves to create a realistic business income. It will detect that you have the correct aircraft at the correct airport, calculate the proper aircraft weight* to match the job, verify the assignment to be flown, adjust the fuel quantity in your aircraft to match what the database says it has onboard, and finally, log the results after the flight. (* Weight adjustment is optional but it will make the experience more lifelike based on your assignment. If you have 4 passengers to take on a flight then it will tell you what the aircraft weight should be to simulate those 4 passengers. This really helps you learn the difference weight makes, especially on the smaller planes.) FSEconomy has limitations of duplicating real life. Some compromises have to be made to allow comfortable interaction with Flight Simulator. The scope of FS Economy is: • Buying/Renting Aircraft • Buying goods • Aircraft maintenance • Landing fees • Fuel Cost • Paid assignments • Forming and managing flight groups • Building / owning an airport fuel and maintenance facility (FBO) I hope you consider checking out the site as well as considering it for a review. I have been flight simming for 9 years and have recently started to learn to fly for real, thus fulfilling a life long ambition. I have listened to your podcasts from the beginning and find they add another dimension to my hobby. I find the mix of flight sim and real world flying matches my interests.   I have recently returned from a holiday in western Canada and was fortunate to have a flight in a de Havilland Beaver floatplane from Victoria Harbour. I have since reproduced the flight in FSX with the freeware scenery of Victoria which was referred to in a recent $100 hamburger flight. This proved a reasonable likeness to the actual flight, although I missed the reality of the radio transmissions, particularly the call from the pilot that he was going around as there was a fishing vessel in his way!- I don't often hear that at my local flying club!   I have a number of points which may be of interest- 1) I have recently bought the PMDG MD11. In the manual it refers to the defrag application from O&O. I downloaded a trial version of the programme and found that after using it, frame rates were dramatically improved- the standard Windows XP application does not have this effect. I am now considering buying the full version. I don't believe that you have discussed defragging on your show, but I have read a number of times that a regular defrag is necessary to keep FSX running smoothly.   2) Some time ago, one of your contributors talked about the imminent release of Captigame, an application for capturing video from games. I note from the Captigame website that the last news is dated April this year. Do you have any further information- is it still a goer?   3) On a recent episode, Mark mentioned the live atc website. You may be interested to know that there is an application called FS Chatter Live, available on flightsim.com, which acts as an interface between fsx and liveatc. I guess the advantage of this is that there is no need to open an internet browser, which on my machine drags down the frame rates. I note that it is shareware at a cost of $10 but am trialling the free demo version.   In conclusion, keep up the good work. I note that the shows are getting longer, but I guess you can't have too much of a good thing. However, as I tend to listen to podcasts in the car (I travel a lot with my job), I find myself hoping that I am held up on my way to clients- a reversal of my normal philosophy! If you flew the two previous $100 Hamburger flights (Lost in Traffic, and the ZLA Swarm Event) you should now be a master of your COM radios and your Transponder. In this flight were going to learn how to use your NAV radios to navigate the airways using VORs. What is a VOR? (VHF Omnidirectional Range) I think this definition from the excellent website navfltsm.addr.com (Recommended by Danton) sums it up best:  The VHF Omnidirectional Range navigation system, VOR, was probably the most significant aviation invention other than the jet engine. With it, a pilot can simply, accurately, and without ambiguity navigate from Point A to Point B.  The widespread introduction of VORs began in the early 1950s and 50 years later it remains the primary navigation system in the overwhelming majority of aircraft.  The basic principle of operation of the VOR is very simple: the VOR facility transmits two signals at the same time. One signal is constant in all directions, while the other is rotated about the station. The airborne equipment receives both signals, looks (electronically) at the difference between the two signals, and interprets the result as a radial from the station.  The GPS, Global Positioning System, is making inroads onto the navigation scene and offers a flexibility unavailable with either NDB or VOR systems. However, it is supplementing these systems, not replacing them. What is a DME? (Distance Measuring Equipment) Aircraft use DME to determine their distance from a land-based transponder by sending and receiving pulse pairs - two pulses of fixed duration and separation. The ground stations are typically collocated with VORs, as shown in the picture above. In short, VORs allow you to navigate to a specific location, from anywhere as long as you are in range. DME’s tell you how far away you are from a particular VOR Point. The positives are pretty obvious over Dead Reckoning. Since a VOR transmits in ALL DIRECTIONS you can navigate to a specific geographic point from any direction. You are no longer relying on specific headings, and correcting your headings when you are off course. A DME is helpful, but not needed as we will learn in our flight.   A basic tutorial on how to tune to a VOR and navigate… First and Foremost… Select an aircraft you are comfortable with flying, and are fairly familiar with where the instruments are at and how to operate them. NAV Radio VORs are activated by entering the provided frequency into your Navigation radio (In this case, NAV 1 is just right of COMM 1, and NAV 2 right below NAV 1). The Navigation radios are activated  by clicking the “Nav 1” or “Nav 2” buttons. After tuning either of the NAV radios to a valid frequency, you will hear a Morse Code tone with the VOR’s station ID. These codes can be found on the sectional chart for that particular VOR. It is a great idea to tune the frequencies you will need while on the ground.   Omni Bearing Selector (OBS) After you have tuned your NAV 1 radio to the correct frequency, you will need to use your OBS knob (In the photo above, the lower left knob) to narrow on to the VOR, this is done by rotating the knob until the Arrow is pointing to your VOR. This process is done after takeoff past 1,000 feet, as VORs are only line of sight. ­­ Here is an example of a tuned OBS. In this case the VOR is facing 12 o’clock in front of my airport. This can face any direction, as long as the arrow is straight: You will follow the OBS similar to how you would follow your heading indicator.  You may need to keep on tuning the OBS while in flight, since your orientation may change. The goal is to keep the arrow straight. Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) If you aircraft has DME, and the frequency you are tuning has both VOR and DME capabilities, you will see the distance away from your VOR: In this case, we are 12.1nm from the VOR we are tracking. If the frequency does not have DME capabilities, you will not see any information here.  Our Flight If you were up with us during the Swarm 2009 Event, you will find this flight fairly familiar. We will be taking off from Van Nuys (KVNY) and landing at Palm Springs (KPSP). We will not be using any headings for this flight, instead you will be provided with VOR frequencies. You will need to key them in to your Navigation radio, and follow the VOR using the OBS Gauge. Cruise Altitude: 5,000-6,000ft Aircraft: A Single/Double Prop Aircraft that you know well Weather: Real World Weather (15 Minutes) -Depart: KVNY Runway 16R (Or Active Runway) -Fly EAST, POMONA (POM) VOR/DME – Frequency 110.4 -RIVERSIDE (RAL) VOR – Frequency 112.4 -Fly through Banning Pass (Slightly North after passing RIVERSIDE VOR) while tuning to PALM SPRINGS (PSP) VOR/DME– Frequency 115.5 -Land: KPSP Active Runway Flight Notes 1. Watch what happens when you get close to the POM VOR. You will notice that as you get closer, you will be fine tuning it more and more. Since you’re nearly on top of the VOR station, it will get very touchy when you are near it. At some point you will need to give up on fine-tuning the OBS knob and pass the VOR, I found the cutoff distance around 1.5nm or so away. When you pass the VOR, you will see your arrow flip, as the VOR is now behind you. Remember this behavior because the second VOR (RAL) does NOT support DME, so you will need to use the sensitivity of the OBS Arrow to determine how close you are to the VOR, and when you have passed it. 2. Through the Banning Pass, you will need to adjust your altitude as needed. 3. Near the PSP VOR in real life there are many Wind Turbines. If you look up the sectional, you will see the highest windmill is 1980ft MS Sectionals I would encourage everyone to use the tools we have recommended over the past months such as SkyVector.com and create their own flight map. However, here is one that you can use just to make sure you have the right idea when making your own. I’ve covered up the Headings that SkyVector puts in with their flight planning tool, as navigating using just headings would make this learning exercise worthless! This burger flight is designed to introduce you to the Nav Radios, the OBS, and the DME on your aircraft, and how to navigate using VORs, and how a VOR acts differently from a VOR/DME. When You're Done... Share your results in the forums!! Review: Aerosoft's Discus Glider X Product Information: Fully professional development (over 20 months). Written review by Eric: Introduction This product sparked our interest because at the time there were no payware gliders for FSX, so we were naturally intrigued when the Discus Glider X finally made its appearance. We are not extremely knowledgeable in Gliders, so we are all entering the Discus with fairly clean slates when it comes to how a glider acts, and how it should fly. As you would expect from any commercial payware, the installation process was very straightforward. Included is a copy of WinchX, a freeware program that improves FSX’s default winch system. Without WinchX you can not winch any aircraft with an engine, which poses a problem with towing two of the three discus models which have small onboard engines. WinchX installs automatically after Discus Glider X does, and no additional configuration is needed. Aerosoft also recommends two additional freeware programs, Cumulus X and Sim Probe which both improve the way FSX calculates thermals. It would have been really nice if Aerosoft were able to include these two programs the same way they did with WinchX – But this could be due to technical or licensing reasons. The install process for these two programs does require some configuration, but everything is outlined in their respective ReadMe files. The Model Three main models are included: B – A traditional glider with no motor. BT – A glider with a small motor included. You will still need to use something like WinchX to get airborne, but the motor can be deployed for getting you between thermals, or to get a little extra boost when you’re a little short from the airport. BM – A glider with a larger motor included. This motor is powerful enough to take off under it’s own power, and does not need a winch to get airborne. However, with WinchX you will get to your desired altitude much faster than using the motor. The documentation mentions that the “BM” model is very rare, and only 10 of these models were actually made. It should go without saying, but don’t expect much from either the BT or the BM motors... It is a glider after all, and the motors are only designed for getting you back to the airport in one piece. The motors are activated via a switch in the cockpit, and specific instructions must be followed to start the motor. These procedures are outlined in the product manual, and differ between the BT and the BM models. I found the flight model itself to be truly “as real as it gets”. A lot of attention was put into creating a realistic flight model, which is extremely important in a glider as you are relying on a true to life glide ratio, and control surfaces performing as they should. The Discus Glider X has been flown and real Discus pilots have verified the flight model. Testing the model, you can tell when the glider is performing well and when it isn’t. If you jerk the rudder left or right, you will almost feel the jerking motion in your chair as the glider violently jerks, and then side slips. It is a similar situation to the Ailerons and other control surfaces. One thing I would love to do if given the opportunity is to fly this model with a good quality force feedback stick. If force feedback is supported, it will nearly take the amount of realism over the edge... The model behavior is so well, it is a shame that when you feel the aircraft struggling you aren’t able to feel it in your joystick. The Sound I would normally put the sound under “The Model”, or just stick it in a sentence somewhere... But I think the attention to detail in the Discus Glider X is deserving of its own category. This model includes more than 100 non standard sounds. Going back to the previous section, when you make hard movements on the control surfaces, in addition to feeling it in the behavior, you can HEAR the glider slipping in the air, and it is all integrated perfectly with the aircraft model. Considering a glider is designed to be flown without an engine (BT and BM models can obviously be excluded) you aren’t listening to the buzz of an aircraft engine... You’re hearing the wind over the wings, and your rudder, ailerons, and elevator interacting with the air racing by. The combination of the excellent flight model, and the Aerosoft sound system is a perfect match. The Cockpit Believe it or not, a glider is a lot more advanced than you’d think! They can have sophisticated flight computers, and gauges not typically found in your standard C172. In addition to all of the instruments, the Discus Glider X features a fully functional ballast system. The model (B, BT, or BM) you choose dictates which virtual cockpit layout you get, and which gauges you get. But overall, you get the following gauges with the Glider X: Compass Airspeed Indicator Altimeter C4 Competition PDA/GPS TEC Variometer Electrical Netto Variometer Engine operation switch/Hobbs meter/RPM Meter Yaw String Without going into each and every gauge, I will just mention that they are all very well modeled, and look realistic in the Virtual Cockpit even zoomed and at high resolutions. The C4 Competition flight computer can surprisingly be a very complicated instrument; Aerosoft actually includes the actual manuals from the manufacture, which can be followed with this gauge. The last gauge I will touch on is the compass... I know you’re probably laughing right now, asking Who Cares! It’s a compass... But I think that such a simple instrument is usually overlooked in most payware models, and the one included in the Discus Glider X is phenomenal. The slight movements of the aircraft are reflected in the vertical and horizontal movements of the compass while in flight... And frankly I’ve never seen anything like it in FSX – You really have to see it to appreciate it. Documentation As with every Aerosoft product, the documentation is overall pretty good. It goes into the functions of most of the more advanced instruments and gauges with the model – Which for anyone not familiar with some of the specialized instruments for gliders will need to read to understand what their purposes are. Aerosoft provides basic “Getting Started” documentation – Which is about 15 pages of material not counting copyright and title pages. This is well labeled, and has many screenshots, which I found very helpful. Also provided are full flight manuals for the “B” and “BT” models, C4 Competition Flight computer, and WinchX. However, one item missing altogether in the “Getting Started” documentation is any information on the Water Ballast system. The Flight Manual probably includes information on this – But you will have to find it in the 177 pages. There is also very little information on the C4 Competition computer system in the “Getting Started” documentation, just a paragraph on what the computer is and its basic function. While the full manual IS included, it could be a little overwhelming for new pilots. There is also a pretty good Easter Egg in the documentation... Nice! Nitpicking... In my testing of the Discus Glider X, I did notice one item that could be improved on. This is in no way a deal breaker... But I think it should be mentioned.. Cabin reflections not in sync with what they should be! See below, the reflection looks great, right?   Now if I take out the GPS/PDA, the reflection does not show this change: ...Nothing major, but it would add a little extra bit of realism if the reflection textures were refreshed for major changes – Such as the PDA and the pilot (The pilot can be toggled off and on depending on your preference). I don’t expect a different set of reflection textures to be made for every single movement in the VC (Such as moving the throttle or ballast lever), but for major changes like those mentioned above, it would be a nice addition. Taking a couple steps back though, this model has been in development for 20 months, and the flight model was completely re- written several times... So if it comes down to putting extra time into the flight model, or the reflections, I would choose the flight model. But it would be a nice change to put in a service pack maybe? If you’ve made it this far though, and you’re interested in the Discus Glider X, don’t let this tiny bug get in the way. Overall... Overall, you have to ask yourself if you are a glider person or not. If soaring through the skies, riding the thermals with maybe a little bit of aerobatics tossed in sounds like a great time to you, then I would recommend the Discus Glider X without hesitation. If you have been interested in the default glider included with FSX, you will find this to be MUCH improved and a more realistic aircraft. After flying the Discus Glider X for a few days, I went back to the default glider included with FSX – The difference is night and day. After flying this model, the default glider feels completely disconnected from the control surface, and the cockpit to be very basic at best. I would recommend some great scenery to go with it though. A unique experience with a glider is that you have almost a full range of vision. Unlike a small GA aircraft like a C172, you don’t have the engine & prop in your vision, nor do you have the wings or passenger seat. You have uninterrupted vision from the front, side to side, and vertically. If you’re looking to explore a massive scenery expansion (Like Tongass Fjords, Switzerland Pro, Orbx FTX, etc) this glider is perfect to do that. You are able to get lower, slower, and closer than you can with any other aircraft out there. There are a few small things that in my opinion could be tweaked (Such as the basic documentation and the reflections), and would keep me from giving this a “Perfect” rating... But it is still 99% there. Pros: Top notch flight model Detailed, and real to life VC and instrumentation (No 2D Cockpit) WinchX is almost necessary, and included with this Sound system = Excellent Overall, good documentation is included No performance hit noticed, FPS friendly Cons: Basic documentation could have been more in depth about the C4 Competition, and does not mention ballast system at all. Despite having an engine, I take advantage of thermals and ridge lift to gain the range I need for the journey. I start to get some sense of how the C4 computer works in conjunction with the GPS and a flight plan, at least to the point of estimating my altitude at my destination to know when I have climbed high enough. Crossing the Salzach River, I pass over the Altstadt or “Old Town,” which is UNESCO World Heritage Site. The addon scenery is very nice. I dump my water ballast and make my way towards the Salzburg airport. On final, however, I am a little high and fast, so I deploy my speed brakes. They do the trick and get me into the proper glide slope. When flying the Discus, I recommend following Aerosoft’s advice of setting the throttle level to control the speed brakes, giving you much finer control. First, when panning inside the cockpit, some views show the pilot after what appears to be an extremely close shave. Second, in the unfortunate event of a crash, even the non-motorized Discus B sometimes explodes in a fireball, causing you to wonder whether the ballast tank may have been filled with avgas (although the attached screenshot doesn’t really capture the occasionally huge conflagration).
