When was the last time you looked back and thought, “If only I knew this earlier”? In this episode, Jay shares the seven life-changing lessons he wishes he’d learned in his teens and twenties—insights that could have reshaped his relationships, career, peace of mind, and sense of purpose. These aren’t just reflections; they’re powerful revelations most of us only discover through struggle, heartbreak, or burnout. Jay dives into what it truly means to speak with intention, to know when it’s time to let go, and to stop outsourcing your self-worth. From learning to stay quiet in a world that rewards noise to realizing that boundaries are an act of self-love—each lesson is a powerful reminder that growth isn’t always about adding more, but about releasing what no longer serves you. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why Saying Less Makes Your Words Matter More. Knowing When It’s Time to Walk Away Why You Should Talk To People, Not About Them. What Stress Reveals About a Person’s True Nature. How to Raise Your Standards Without Guilt. Why Some People Miss the Old You (for the Wrong Reasons). How to Stop Absorbing Others' Emotions and Expectations. This episode is for anyone feeling stuck, overlooked, or overwhelmed. Jay reminds you that you don’t get what you deserve — you get what you accept. And that sometimes the most powerful transformation happens when you choose peace over performance, presence over perfection, and truth over approval. In this episode of Power Producers Shoptalk, David Carothers dives into a topic that every insurance producer cares about—commissions. But instead of breaking it down himself, he brings in the expert who handles it all: Crystal Temple Frawley from The Pemberley Group. Crystal, a seasoned insurance accounting professional, shares her insights on agency bill, commission reconciliation, and the technology that's reshaping bookkeeping for insurance agencies. She discusses the unique challenges agencies face when managing their books, the common pitfalls of relying on generic bookkeeping services, and the importance of leveraging specialized expertise. The conversation also touches on how advancements in automation and AI are streamlining commission reconciliation, saving agencies time, and ensuring financial accuracy. Key Points: Mastering Commission Reconciliation David and Crystal discuss why commission reconciliation is one of the most critical yet challenging aspects of agency accounting. Crystal explains how audits, tracking, and technology can help agencies ensure they're getting paid accurately—and on time. The Role of Technology in Bookkeeping The insurance industry has long struggled with outdated processes, but Crystal highlights how technology is finally catching up. From automation to AI-driven commission tracking, she shares how modern tools can eliminate inefficiencies and reduce costly errors. Outsourcing vs. DIY Accounting Crystal breaks down when an agency should consider outsourcing bookkeeping rather than managing it in-house. She explains why using generic accounting services like QuickBooks Live often leads to costly cleanup work and why specialized expertise is essential for accurate financial management. The Human Element in Financial Oversight Despite technological advancements, Crystal emphasizes that human expertise is irreplaceable when it comes to financial oversight. She explains how automated tools can handle data entry, but strategic decision-making and financial analysis still require a hands-on approach from an experienced bookkeeper. Knowing When It's Time to Delegate David and Crystal explore how agency owners often hesitate to outsource financial management, believing they can handle it themselves. Crystal explains the signs that indicate it's time to delegate bookkeeping—like spending more time reconciling commissions than selling policies. If you're an agency owner wondering how to streamline your financial processes, ensure accurate commission reconciliation, and make smarter decisions with your accounting, this episode is packed with valuable insights you won't want to miss. Oxygen for the Soul (ft. Simon T. Bailey, Keynote Speaker, Author, Coach)Simon T. Bailey on encouragement, reinvention, and the unlimited power of womenOPENING QUOTE:“I think every Playmaker listening to us right now, be sure to remember that encouragement is oxygen for the soul. Who is one person that, after you hear everything we're talking about, you can go and encourage them via text, via video, or via a call? It's oxygen for the soul.”—Simon T. BaileyGUEST BIO:Simon T. Bailey's purpose in life is to help you discover your brilliance through motivational speeches which have netted him Hall of Fame accolades. He also offers direct one-on-one coaching, has published nine personal and professional development books (including a number of bestsellers), hosts a national TV talk show program, and created a viral video with over 90 million total views. Simon's framework for brilliance is based on his 30 years of experience in hospitality, including serving as sales director for the Disney Institute. His client roster includes Salesforce, Stanford Healthcare, General Mills, and Hilton Hotels.Show Links:WebsiteLinkedInInstagramTikTokFacebookYouTubeTwitterCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[10:42] - The Power of EncouragementBreathe life into the people around youBoth Simon and Paul share their perspectives on encouraging the people around us. For them, it's a calling. We all have the power to breathe life into others. Interestingly, we'll even find that in the times we feel most lifeless ourselves, lifting others up is what puts wind back into our own sails. As Simon tells us, encouragement is “oxygen for the soul.”[23:07] - Moments Matter When they Change BehaviorA life-changing moment must be allowed to change your lifeAfter a lifetime of emotional distance, Simon's father shared his love for Simon only on his death bed. Rather than just a special moment, Simon allowed this to become transformative. He told himself that among his brothers, his children, and everyone in his life, he would always share how he felt about them and never let a moment pass him by. [28:06] - Ignite the Power of WomenFrom marginalized to empoweredAs Simon shares, “If we get it right with women, ensuring that they're not marginalized, I become a better human being because I do right by women in my life.”That's why he wrote Ignite the Power of Women, a book and movement about unlocking the potential of women in your life— and your own ultimate potential as a result.[32:22] - Lessons from the Disney InstituteLearning from a global leader in leadershipWhat are Simon's top lessons from the Disney Institute? Number one: hire for attitude, train for success. Skills can be trained, but great attitudes are rare. Second: Customer service is a department, but customer love is a mindset. Disney understands they're not in the theme park business, they're in the business of creating magical moments for customers. You can't do that unless you feel love. After all, studies show that every buying decision is, on average, 70% emotional and only 30% rational.[38:18] - Knowing When It's Time for ReinventionHow do you read the signs that a change is in the cards?Simon has reinvented himself five times over twenty years. How do you know you're ready for a reinvention? Simon tells us that you have to read the tea leaves— that means keeping track of the changes in the world and how they'll affect your future. Are you in a future-proof field, or one on its way out? But it's not just about strategy. You also have to make sure your heart and head are onboard before your hands take action. “I'm sure we're going to have more challenges in life. That's just life. That's how you build your muscle. That's how you graduate and matriculate through this thing called life. Because life is one big lesson until we leave this place, and I will forever be a learner of life. And it's never too late to transform your life.” - Tommi Vincent Welcome to Stay a While with Tommi Vincent! Today I speak with some who will forever have a seat at my table, my husband, Troy Vincent. If life is a test, then the year 2020 is the pop quiz we didn't study for. Through the trials and the wins, one thing that remains steady is our faith. The question is, can you “walk it like you talk it”? When you're being tested, faith plus action are necessary to achieve results. Sometimes you need to hear from someone who has been through the fire and has the medals to prove it. Troy Vincent is the Executive Vice President of Football Operations at the National Football League, beginning his football career as the 7th overall pick in the first round for the Miami Dolphins in the 1992 NFL Draft. After 15 seasons of playing in the league, Troy continues to be nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Philadelphia Eagles, the State of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin, and Pennsbury High School. In this episode we cover [01:00 - 04:43] Now That You're at the Table, We're Family [04:44 - 11:01] Getting to Know Troy and Tommi [11:02 - 22:01] Letting Fire Strengthen Your Faith [22:02 - 32:28] Advice For When You're Going Through the Fire [32:29 - 43:10] The Impact That Support Can Have on Our Lives [43:11 - 50:07] Knowing When It's Time To Let Go and Move Forward [50:08 - 53:37] It Is Never Too Late to Transform Your Life [53:58 - 56:12] Closing Segment Key Quotes “This podcast was created to shine a light and be a mirror. My hope is that the seeds and nuggets from my guests will leave a lasting deposit that will manifest a harvest in your life.” - Tommi Vincent “And I think this goes back to the foundation of our relationship. Christ being the center of our relationship so that when we disagree, who we have to answer to is Christ.” - Troy Vincent “I wanted to make sure that the listeners would have an opportunity to walk away from this relationship understanding that the activation of faith is paramount to being able to move through circumstances and situations. We've been through the fire, and we came out without a stench of smoke.” - Tommi Vincent “Just imagine where we would be if we took hold of [faith], and we captured those things, and had full control over it. And we weren't worried about the challenges and the things that haunted us.” - Troy Vincent Connect with Troy Vincent Instagram: @troyvincentsr Facebook: Troy Vincent, Sr Website: https://troyvincent.com Connect with Me! Did you know that I started my career as a bookkeeper? I’ve helped many businesses with their finances and today, I’m going to share that knowledge with you! I’m going to dive into what the role of a bookkeeper is, how to know if it’s time to outsource your bookkeeping, and how to make sure your bookkeeper is getting the job done. It can be anxiety-inducing to let someone else take care of your finances, but with the right information, you can feel confident you’re making the right choice Let’s find out if hiring a bookkeeping pro is right for your business! What We’re Talking About What Does A Bookkeeper Do? Knowing When It’s Time To Outsource Bookkeeping How To Review Your Bookkeepers Work What Does A Bookkeeper Do? It’s important to know the role of a bookkeeper and how it differs from an accountant and a tax preparer. Bookkeepers take care of the data entry portion of accounting. Some bookkeepers will also work with accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoices, sales tax, and run financial statements. Ideally, you should try to do your own bookkeeping for at least the first year of your business. By doing your own bookkeeping you will get comfortable with your business finances, create more transparency, and have a good foundation of bookkeeping principles. Knowing When It’s Time To Outsource Bookkeeping As your business grows and your time becomes more valuable or you are spread more thinly, it may be time to outsource bookkeeping. With growth, finances can become more complicated as well. For example, dealing with sales tax might be challenging, and a bookkeeper who specializes in that area could help streamline your finances. As always, we should never overlook the emotional aspect of money. If doing the bookkeeping, or even thinking about bookkeeping stresses you out, it’s time to hire a pro. How To Review Your Bookkeepers Work If you were able to DIY your bookkeeping in the first year, you already have a great understanding of what your bookkeeper should be doing. But, even if you are hands off with your bookkeeping, it is critical to pay attention. The easiest way to stay up to date with your bookkeeper is by having the log-in information for your financial software and to check-in at a regular frequency. Account reconciliation and having the bookkeeper send you reports also ensures the correct work has been done in a timely manner. Is your bookkeeping up to date? Today we’re talking about filing business taxes! Should you DIY? Hire a professional tax preparer? How do you know if you’re filing correctly? There’s a lot to consider before deciding if you should go solo or hire a pro, but it’s important to start the process today! Discover my tips and tricks for bookkeeping and tax preparation and figure out if doing your own taxes is the right move for you and your business. Stop stressing about tax season and learn if you can do your business taxes yourself! What we’re talking about What To Consider When Deciding If You Can Prepare Business Taxes Yourself Knowing When It’s Time To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer How To Be Sure You Are Preparing Taxes Correctly & Legally The Importance Of Good Bookkeeping For Your Business Taxes What To Consider When Deciding If You Can Prepare Business Taxes Yourself There are many concerns when deciding if you can go solo and organize your business taxes without the help of a tax preparer. A few major considerations include the type of business you have, how much your revenue has changed this year, how long you’ve been in business, and how confident you feel about understanding tax deductions. One important question you need to ask yourself is whether the thought of doing your own taxes excites you. Are you up for the challenge? Knowing When It’s Time To Hire A Professional Tax Preparer While you might be motivated to save money by doing your own business taxes, there are 5 instances when it’s time to consider using a pro: 1) you are selling products (as opposed to providing services), 2) you’re not sure what is considered a write-off, 3) you’ve had rapid business growth, 4) the thought of doing your own taxes makes you queasy, and 5) when your business is brand new. Hiring a professional can provide you with a sense of security when it comes to preparing your business taxes. How To Be Sure You Are Preparing Taxes Correctly & Legally If you have a lot of questions about your business taxes, it’s probably time to hire a professional tax preparer. A pro can sit down with you and answer all your questions. While you should feel confident by hiring a professional, they can still make mistakes, so it’s important to review the paperwork thoroughly. The Importance Of Good Bookkeeping For Your Business Taxes Your taxes are only as good as your bookkeeping. It’s critical to prepare year-round for tax season by using an accurate and reliable digital accounting program. A shoebox full of old receipts will not help you or a tax preparer. A great resource is the Panic Free Tax Prep workshop which provides a detailed how-to guide for comprehensive tax preparation. Are you ready to get started on this year's taxes? A viral video put Dollar Shave Club on the map, but it took a team to get it where it is today. CEO Michael Dubin talks about DSC’s growth, acquisition, and expanding product line. It was the commercial seen round the internet. On March 6, 2012, Dollar Shave Club uploaded its first YouTube video, featuring one-and-a-half minutes of offbeat humor, during which founder Michael Dubin rides in a kid’s wagon, wields a machete, and encounters, among many other things, a person in a bear suit. “Do you think your razor needs a vibrating handle, a flashlight, a back scratcher, and 10 blades?” Dubin deadpans while riding a forklift. “Your handsome-ass grandfather had one blade—and polio.” It was a totally unique way to explain a simple concept: For an affordable fee, Dollar Shave Club subscribers would get quality razor blades delivered to their doorsteps on a regular basis, thus skipping the trips to the store for overpriced, gimmicky alternatives. And people loved it—the resulting traffic from the video’s launch crashed their site. Since then, that commercial has been viewed over 26 million times on YouTube. It cost only $4,500 to produce, yet it launched the company on a trajectory that would later lead to a $1 billion acquisition by Unilever. “It put us on the map, no doubt,” Dubin says. “We wouldn't be where we are without it.” But this isn’t a story about Michael Dubin and his famous viral video. It’s not even a story about razor blades. As Dubin is quick to point out, getting DSC to where it is today required a team effort. And with its ever-expanding product line, today, the company is about so much more than a good shave. Timing Is Everything—In Comedy and Business They say the most important thing in comedy is timing; the difference between roaring laughter and painful silence can be a fraction of a second. Maybe this was something Dubin learned during the eight years he spent training at New York City’s Upright Citizens Brigade, an improv theatre with notable alumni such as Saturday Night Live’s Horatio Sanz and Amy Poehler. While taking improv classes, Dubin worked various media jobs, starting as a page at NBC, then moving into production and news writing at MSNBC, and eventually, getting into digital marketing at SportsIllustrated.com. But it wasn’t just Dubin’s punchline delivery that set DSC up for success out of the gate. Even the timing of its launch was strategic. As Dubin told NPR’s Guy Raz in a “How I Built This” interview, he chose that specific date—March 6—because, with his media background, he knew that news outlets would be hungry for a tech story leading up to the annual South by Southwest conference that takes place in Austin in mid-March. The launch date also coincided with Dollar Shave Club’s announcement of its $1 million seed round. It Takes a Team A viral video can be a major boost for any company, but it’s far from the secret to a successful business. For that, you need great people, and assembling them is easier said than done. “Big business is a team sport,” Dubin says, “and it requires talent from all corners of the universe that will help you build what you're looking to build.” Knowing where to find your future teammates can be a challenge. “Finding great talent is always going to be the hardest thing that any entrepreneur does,” Dubin says. “Because, ultimately, there's somebody out there in the marketplace that can help you do your job really well and help you build your company the best way possible. But you've got to go out and find them in the great wide world.” That’s why Dubin is a fan of recruiters, “because recruiters are paid to have knowledge of the network that you're looking in.” When building his team early on, Dubin had just moved from New York to Los Angeles and lacked a network in his new city, so he relied on his early investors to make introductions. “That's a great reason to take investment—besides, obviously, needing to take it to drive growth and invest where you need to.” To attract the right talent, Dubin recommends founders do two things. First, focus on your company’s mission. What are you trying to achieve? What gaps in the market are you trying to fill? Why do you come to work every day? “Really talented people want to work for companies that have purpose,” he says. “And that's defined in the mission of the company.” Second, consider granting employees equity. “People want to feel like they're participants in the success—if you ultimately do have the success—and that's super meaningful.” And if your mission changes, that’s okay. It’s natural for it to evolve as your company grows; that’s certainly true for Dollar Shave Club. “It started out more as a shave-only proposition,” Dubin says. “And then it grew out into becoming…more of a men's health, more of a men's grooming platform.” What’s their mission today? “Help guys take care of their minds and bodies so they can be their best selves.” Growth, Acquisition, and Expansion Taking on the shaving industry was a gutsy move. To put that into perspective, it was around the year 1900 that King C. Gillette invented the world’s first disposable razor, according to Gillette’s website. So when Dubin decided to disrupt the shaving market, he was going up against a company that had already been in it for over 100 years. Eight months after the launch of its first commercial, Dollar Shave Club secured a Series A round of $9.8 million. And two years after that, the subscription razor blade company hit 1 million members. In July 2016, Unilever acquired Dollar Shave Club for a reported $1 billion. At the time, DSC had 3.2 million members and was expected to exceed $200 million in turnover (which is sometimes defined as net sales and sometimes defined as revenue) that year. Dubin stayed on as CEO and continues to serve in that capacity today. “Unilever's been very good to let us run the company our way,” he says, “and that was part of the design.” Today, Dollar Shave Club boasts over 300 employees and continues to expand its product line and global footprint. Beyond razors, DSC now sells cologne, body wash, shampoo—even flushable toilet wipes (they’re called One Wipe Charlies). It also has sites live in Australia, Canada, and the UK, with plans to expand further in the next couple of years. Knowing When It’s Time to Add a New Product For a long time, razor blade subscriptions were Dollar Shave Club’s bread and butter, and it gained a loyal following with its single product line. But growth almost always means product expansion, so how can a founder know when it’s the right time to add new products? “You have to stay true to your core,” Dubin says. “You have to develop credibility in your core categories before you can expand outward. There is such a thing as doing that too fast.” Timing matters. Move too fast, and you could confuse your customers and dilute your brand. Too slow, and you may miss your opportunity to take the market. As for figuring out what your next product should be: ”You should definitely do your research. It's always a blend of gut and research.” Time Well Spent These days, Dubin doesn’t star in any viral videos, but he told Foundr about a recent, albeit lesser-known, YouTube video of his commencement address to the 2018 graduating class of his alma mater, Emory University. In it, he sums up the lessons he’s learned over the years, including one about “little choices.” “They're the ones you make more frequently, maybe even every day,” he says to the graduates, “the ripple effects of which, I believe, actually have a bigger impact over the course of your life. They’re choices about where to invest your time.” Given Dollar Shave Club’s meteoric success, it’s safe to say that Dubin and his team’s time has been well spent. 5 Entrepreneurial Lessons from Michael Dubin Dollar Shave Club is a massively popular company that attracted a billion-dollar acquisition. What are some parting lessons we can take from this interview with CEO Michael Dubin? Video isn’t a magic bullet.“What worked for us is not necessarily going to work for everybody,” Dubin says. “Unfortunately, there's no easy answer here. The best advice that I can give to somebody is to find what makes you special, understand what unique talents you have or your team has, and leverage those to try and cut through the noise. It's not easy. It's not easy, and video is not the surefire way to do it.” Culture is more than company perks.“Culture's a tricky word. A lot of people mistake culture for meaning like a coffee bar and a beanbag chair for everybody or stand-up desks, and that's not what culture is. Culture is a much more complex, complicated animal than that. And to me, culture means…people are into their jobs, they feel like they're contributing to the mission, they feel like they're being valued for their contributions and recognized for their contributions, and that they have a career path at that company—that's culture. All the other stuff is sort of superfluous icing on the cake.” Only use a subscription model if it enhances the customer experience.“A lot of people get addicted to this notion of a subscription business because they love the idea of monthly recurring revenue, but you should only be launching a subscription business if it's going to be an enhancement to…the customer's experience. The customer's experience is the most important thing. If delivering them a subscription is going to make their life better or happier, you should offer a subscription. And if not, you shouldn't.” Expect hard times. “You're going to go through hard times. You're going to go through lonely periods. That's to be expected. There's really nothing that anybody can tell you that's going to help make that feel better. … You just kind of have to go through it, truly.” Take breaks. “My advice to entrepreneurs who are starting companies is you have to be relentless, but you also have to step away and take breaks. You can't work yourself to death because it's a marathon, not a sprint.” Key Takeaways His media background and the social network for travelers he tried to start before launching Dollar Shave Club The importance of building a great team to help your business grow How to attract and retain high-quality talent How Dollar Shave Club defined its mission and how it has evolved over time What the early DSC team looked like The famous first Dollar Shave Club video Life after Unilever’s acquisition of DSC Challenges the DSC team faces as they grow the brand How to know when to launch another product Dubin’s thoughts on the physical product subscription model How to build a healthy company culture
