On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Brent Smith of Shinedown. For the past couple of decades, Shinedown have been relentless in their mission, channeling pain, addiction, and the power to overcome into seven studio albums and countless shows. During the pandemic, they cracked the mainstream, subverting their hard-rock roots with the viral piano ballad “A Symptom of Being Human” and inviting Jelly Roll onstage for “Simple Man” at Blue Ridge Rock Fest in 2021. As Shinedown prepare for a busy year, Smith connected with Madden about his diverse musical influences, the journey of building the band's 20-plus-year career, and their highly anticipated headlining tour with Bush and Beartooth. We had the pleasure of interviewing SAUL over Zoom video!Saul issue a call for connection in their music. The Iowa quartet—brothers Blake Bedsaul [lead vocals] and Zach Bedsaul [lead guitar, backup vocals], William McIlravy [bass, backup vocals], and Myles Clayborne [drums]—continue to bring audiences together with a one-two punch of precise and pummeling metallic grooves and towering magnetic melodies. Amassing tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from Revolver, Guitar World, Loudwire, and many more, the group fortify an unbreakable bond with listeners on their second full-length offering, THIS IS IT…THE END OF EVERYTHING [Spinefarm].Saul emerged out of the Midwest in 2017 and tirelessly bulldozed a path to the forefront of modern rock. They notably performed alongside everyone from Motionless In White, Atreyu, August Burns Red, Crown The Empire, Bush, and 10 Years to HELLYEAH and Nonpoint in addition to gracing the stages of festivals, including Rebel Rock, Rock Fest, Rock USA, Inkcarceration, and Blue Ridge Rock Fest with Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, and Slipknot. The group independently landed a bona fide hit in the form of “Brother”—an homage to the co-founders' late brother Caleb. It marked their first #1 on Sirius/XM Octane in addition to gathering over 9 million Spotify streams and paving the way for their 2020 full-length debut, Rise As Equals. Co-written with David Draiman of Disturbed, “King Of Misery” reeled in 3.7 million Spotify streams, while “Trial By Fire” also surpassed 3 million Spotify streams. Of the former, American Songwriter praised“‘King of Misery' wasted no time jumping into the heavy mainstream riffs that Saul set out to wrangle,” and Outburn hailed its “futuristic and cinematic video.”Expanding the sonic palette, the guys collaborated with producer Kile Odell [Motionless In White, Nita Strauss] this time around. They initially teased this chapter with “JACK & JILL,” which tempers a hypnotic harmony with a heavy groove. On its heels, they unleashed the single “A MILLION MILES.” Co-written with Johnny Andrews [Three Days Grace, Starset, Theory of a Deadman], a seesawing riff and electrifying melody give way to a chant-able chorus laced with raw emotion befitting of the central theme.Hummable keys set the tone for “RUNAWAY,” dissolving into a harmonic riff. The breathy verses break like a wave on a refrain tailor-made for a live singalong, “Treat me like a runaway, because I'm vanishing. I don't think I'll be missed.”An ominous sample snaps into a pummeling chug on the opener “TOOTH & NAIL.” Clean vocals snake through the verses towards a warning, “There's no escape.”Then, there's “BETTER AS A MEMORY.” It swings between schizophrenic extremes highlighted by unpredictable instrumental dynamics and a heart-wrenching vocal performance, “Deep down you know, I'd be better as a memory.”In the end, Saul create the soundtrack for breaking free.We want to hear from you!

The Taproot machine cranked up this week. They pegged down a date for the new album, announced some shows and pretty much hopped back onto the scene. Singer, Steve Richards, was cool enough to swing by the station for an interview about everything the band has going on. He told me about the entire making of the album, which he did all by himself. It's over a decade or recording, writing and finetuning each note. It's called SC/SSRS (Scissors) and drops on September 29th. The band is going to celebrate its release with a couple shows at the Machine Shop in Flint, Mi. that weekend, the first of which sold right out right away, plus some other shows including the Blue Ridge Rock Fest with some of the biggest names in rock. He tells me about some of the songs, one that's as close to a love song as he's ever gotten. He tells me about some special guests than join him on the record, as well as if he's going to send Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst a copy. LOL That's just for starters on this wide ranging conversation. Join Rory and I as we talk about the bands upcoming album, Dark Sun. Rory opens up about how the lyrics to the album were inspired by the tragic loss of his dad, and the birth of his daughter. He also talks about the wild way in which he found out he was going to be a dad. We talk about how it's been for Rory to be on the road and the quick interactions with fans that take a bit of a toll on his mental health, and how he's able to keep his voice sounding good on the road and how it was to invest in ear monitors and a sound guy to help make the band sound consistently good for fans. We also get into the impromptu acoustic set Rory played at Blue Ridge Rock Fest and how that all came about, and if the band would ever do more acoustic stuff in the future and much more. Sophomore album “Sine Timore” was led by “Sirens”, which was featured on many top Spotify playlists. Most recently, the band released a cover of Ellie Goulding's “Lights”, as well as original single “Whiteout”, which was featured on Apple Music's “Breaking Hard Rock” playlist. 2022 will bring multiple single releases that were produced and co-written with the likes Morgan Rose (Sevendust) and Ricky Armellino (Ice Nine Kills, Hawk). Multiple elements converge to strengthen every bond. Four distinct personalities sharpen Any Given Sin's edge. The Maryland quartet—Victor Ritchie [vocals], Mike Conner [guitar], Rich Stevenson [bass], and Mike Showalter [drums]—infuse metal, hard rock, and alternative into a dark, dynamic, and deep signature style of their own. Amassing nearly 10 million streams and 2 million YouTube views independently and landing multiple number ones on SiriusXM Octane, the group channel this connection on a series of 2021 singles. “We have various different influences, but we all meet in the middle,” says Conner. “Mike Showalter and I have much heavier backgrounds. Rich comes from an industrial background, and Vic is alternative, blues, and grunge. The band is our meeting at a musical crossroads.” Any Given Sin is on tour now with Shaman's Harvest Any Given Sin - Tour Dates And will also be at BLUE RIDGE ROCK FEST 2022 tickets avail here! Happy Monday! We are now getting back to regular programming now the Blue Ridge Rock Fest is behind us. So today we kick off a new week with the band Watersdeep! We talk to them about their experience at BRRF, new upcoming music, and a big concert announcement! Watersdeep is a five piece emotional pop punk/post hardcore band from the Washington D.C. area. The band consists of Gabe Jaar on lead vocals, Rohan Enamandra on guitar and backing vocals, Brandon Jones on guitar, Clare Raiguel on bass guitar, and Max Gilder on drums. Gabe Jaar and John Martin originally started Watersdeep as an acoustic duo, playing covers on their local college radio. After a few months of writing music and playing live radio gigs and open mic nights around their college campus, Gabe and John made their way into the local music scene by playing local venues all across the DMV. Their debut EP Sunken Feelings came out on December 21st, 2016. Around the summer of 2017, John stepped down as the lead vocalist for Watersdeep, leaving Gabe to continue Watersdeep as a solo acoustic project. In 2018, Rohan stepped up as a fill in bassist, which quickly led to his permanent position in the band. As Gabe and Rohan recruited the rest of Watersdeep's members, Rohan switched to guitar. The group released their third studio release, titled "Trust Issues", in January 2020. Their latest release, "A Distant Memory", has an old school vibe with a modern metal twist. The group now boasts two 7 string guitars, expanding upon their original vision with room for plenty of musical experimentation. Blue Ridge Rock Fest has come to a close and so have our review of this fantastic event. We attended Blue Ridge Rock Fest in 2021 and we are here to talk about it. We take a look at how the bands and the fans alike worked together in order to give people a great experience and show the power of the rock and metal community. But we also look at the many things that went wrong (camping, parking, shuttles, gate security, the Golden Circle & VIP, ADA compliance, and more) to paint the picture at how disorganization put this festival in a very dangerous spot. We then look at the organizers of this festival, call out their lack of accountability, and finally issue a challenge to Jonathan Slye to come on the podcast and address all the issues so the 2022 version of the festival can go the way it is supposed to go. This episode is by far the most emotional I have ever been on a show. I won't lie, but I break down and I do very hard. However thanks to Dying Oath, the moments got easier. I want to thank Mindy and the Guys in Dying Oath for being there when I needed them most. Due to the emotion of this episode I am bringing it to you without commercial interruption. Dying Oath plays Friday at Blue Ridge Rock Fest on The Clinic Stage. Dying Oath may be new to the scene, but it has been in the works for quite some time... The band originated with many different members. Through time and tryouts, they finally managed to put together the right musicians with the right amount of heart, drive, and dedication to push the project to new heights. Originating from Rural Retreat, a small farm town in Southwest Virginia, the band has seen its share of hardships and struggles. Just finding members who met all of necessary criteria took over a year to accomplish. Nonetheless, Dying Oath has proven that although the area is dominated by Country and Bluegrass, that Metalcores crunchy rhythms and sweeping melodic leads accompanied by a combination of delicate clean and hardcore vocals, can indeed succeed to some extent. The members of Dying Oath include: Mindy Jackson - Hardcore vocals Josh Hagee - Lead Guitar Jeb Baxley - Clean Vocals Ryan Endicott - Rhythm Guitar Gage Freeman - Percussionist Ryan Matney - Bass Guitar In an effort to showcase some of the material that the band had been working on meticulously for the past several months, Lead Guitarist Josh Hagee decided to pick up the gear necessary to make rough recordings of their tracks and jump on a local event happening in Rural Retreat. Although the tracks were much less that studio quality, the fans of the local scene really connected with what they heard. This combined with a performance at "Rock Retreat III" hosted by DMP Presents and organized by Adam Seelbach (Inferior Design), launched the band into a status they never expected. Dying Oath continues to push the envelope of the local metal community with the support of many other local acts and endorsements from Maverick, Hellfire Radio, Alloy X and Alloy Radio, Dirtbag Clothing, an Artist Development program with Will Baker of Eye to Eye Records and Hollow Intent, and an unheard of partnership with a Haunt Scene podcast known as Haunted Honeymooners. Founded by long time friends Jerry D'itri (guitar and vocals) and Devin Johnson (Bass and Vocals) in the summer of 2014, they went on to perform many times around Michigan priding themselves on being a tight live band, and putting on quality performances, from 2014-late 2015 before taking hiatus due to lineup changes. 7 DAYS TILL THE GATES OPEN AND THE FIRST BAND PLAYS THAT FIRST CHORD! I can't believe we are that close! The excitement is overwhelming to say the least. So now is the time to get your last minute plans in place, especially what bands to see. And that plan should definitely include todays band. Out of Florida, playing Day 4 of Blue Ridge Rock Fest on the HeartSupport Stage, F.I.L.T.H! The band's origins can be dated as far back as 2009 when Bassist Mike Vettel and Guitarist Mike Andes had already begun writing what would be the foundation of F.I.L.T.H. The pair enlisted new members for the project only to realize later the lineup would ultimately have to change. “There was a lot going on at the time…” recalls Mike Andes, “…the timing just wasn't right for the direction we wanted to go…” The two then decided to put the project on hold. Almost a year later, they were introduced to drummer Freddie Hull. “I was playing with Kevin Palmer (Trust Company) before I stepped away from playing….I hadn't played in almost 12 years. By the time I was introduced to Mike and Mikey, I was playing in a local cover band…” recalls Freddie. For the next several months, the trio talked about putting it all together and in early 2011, headed into the studio and started to go to work. “Freddie came in and branded his own style to the chemistry that Mikey V and I already had….he just fit…” exclaims Mike Andes. Soon after, the three began the search for what would ultimately be the next piece to the lineup. And it didn't take them long before front man Eric Mann filled in the position they were searching for. F.I.L.T.H. was born. In late 2014, guitarist Josh Lyons stepped in to fill the final piece. “We wanted a fuller sound…” says Freddie Hull. Josh proceeded to add his own flare to the songs, adding a new dimension to the guitar work of F.I.L.T.H. From this point, F.I.L.T.H. was evolving as a band. Fast forward, after almost 10 years with the band, front man Eric Mann left the band. “It was a shock to say the least.” says guitarist Mike Andes. The search was on. It was a long and grueling process for the band and on May 1, 2021 Jason “Jay” Gutsch brutally filled the void the band was looking for. “I can't say I knew a lot about F.I.L.T.H., but after 10 years of not being a front man, I decided to give it a shot…” says frontman Jay. “It's been an extremely easy transition.” he adds. F.I.L.T.H. has supported national acts such as Fear Factory, Saliva, Green Jelly, Straight Line Stitch, 10 Years and Nonpoint and has played festivals such as WJRR's Kink Fest, Central Florida Metal Fest and Blue Ridge Rock Fest. “Our goal is to grow as a band while staying true to the band's roots and bring the energy that only F.I.L.T.H. can bring!” exclaims Jay. F.I.L.T.H continues to evolve its sound, adding new elements as each member evolves and grows in their respective abilities. You can catch F.I.L.T.H. on all music platforms and social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Cursor's journey has continued to evolve since the release of their debut EP Seeking Connection in 2018 and with the anticipated release of Pharos in 2020. Since that time, Luke, Josh, Derek and Keith have continued to blend genres and create a sound all their own while never forgetting their musical roots or what made them pick up their instruments in the first place. Guitarist/vocalist Luke, lays down riffs that blend both groove and atmosphere while belting out heartfelt lyrics with infectious melodies. While, lead guitarist Josh, swirls over them with searing leads that take you from captivating highs to crushing lows alongside Derek's earthquake inducing subharmonic bass. All the while, Keith's dynamic drumming with eruptions of both emotion and intensity complete Cursor's unapologetic sound that is too heavy for some and not punishing enough for others. Melding metal dynamics and post-rock structure with pop melodies gives Cursor a sound all their own. During 2020, the band wrote and recorded Pharos in Richmond, Va. with Will Beasley (The Dangerous Summer, Turnstile, Asking Alexandria) with a release date set for 12/31. The record is a journey through all the trials and tribulations that was 2020 and marks a transformative moment for the band. 2021 looks brighter than ever for Cursor and Pharos guides the way. The raw, emotional track was written by guitarist Andrew Wayne, whose brother took his own life in 2012. Aurin detail a powerful, first-person account of suicide in this song and music video. “It took me over five years to muster up the courage to actually write about it” says Wayne. “The video is a dedication to him and the city that he loved (New York City), where he lived and died. He was a prodigal artist with an uncanny ability to portray beauty. We decided to feature his artwork, not just for the “Serotonin” album cover, but throughout the rest of the album as well. This song is dedicated to him. It is dedicated not only to his memory, but to all the people that have been lost to such tragedy. ” The first single from Serotonin “Pause Rewind Repeat” has a strong message behind it regarding the times we are living in. “Political divides are tearing nations and their people apart. So many of us are too busy placing the blame or turning a blind eye, that we have forgotten the importance of being humanitarian. The song is intended to show that we need to be stronger in order to push through all of the pain and suffering in this world. We need to lift each other up in order to break through the barriers that have been placed between us.” – Sarah Anderson Wayne https://www.aurinband.com/ https://www.facebook.com/aurinband https://www.instagram.com/aurinband/ This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! Here we are in the final 21 days to the festival. This is getting real. Are you excited? I sure as hell know that I am. Camping is good, food planned out, I am ready to rock out......HARD! I hope you are too. Today I bring you a band playing day 4 of Blue Ridge Rock Fest, State Of Illusion! Life is often comprised of our reactions. Negatives can be turned into positives through the way we look at situations or how hard we are willing to work for what we love. At least, that's the philosophy that Greenville, SC-based rock band State of Illusion have adopted. Though the rock act has had many successes, including memorable performances with artists such as Staind (hand-selected by vocalist Aaron Lewis), Cold, Chevelle, 10 Years, Lamb of God, All That Remains, Pop Evil, Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, Fuel, Flaw, Smile Empty Soul, The Veer Union, Tantric, Like a Storm, etc., State of Illusion have faced more than their fair share of adversity. While supporting their last studio album, Aphelion (which cracked the top 100 worldwide rock charts), State of Illusion took another dose of their well-documented bad luck (see the documentary One More Song – A Decade of State of Illusion from their DVD, State of Illusion – Live), cycling through band members and failing to establish a permanent lineup. The disbanding of the most recent lineup and a year-long bout with writer's block, however, has not deterred founder, vocalist, and guitarist Jacob Porter, who viewed these roadblocks as an opportunity for a fresh start. State of Illusion's long-anticipated next release, Pluto's Ghost, takes the band's sound to the next level with its many textures and range of sonic landscapes. With soaring-yet ethereal, simple-yet-complex radio-ready single “Starlight" to heavy-yet-melodic tracks, "Artificial Paradise" and "Wasted Life," to quiet moments, highlighted in the reflective "Home," State of Illusion's next album takes the sound established on Aphelion to new heights and promises to be a launching point for the band. https://www.stateofillusionmusic.com/ https://youtu.be/F0MT7sbzcyI https://music.apple.com/us/artist/state-of-illusion/284774718 https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ItB6evAEFio44kFAbxYDT?si=d66224a4c2514179&nd=1 This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! Rising from just north of Atlanta, Georgia, comes hard hitting alternative hard rock band Misty Eyed. Lead by compelling and dynamic vocalist Megan Burke and accompanied by guitarist John Eck, with his powerful riffs and melodies, and bassist Wes Powell, who solidly holds down the groove and rhythm, this trio brings a new edge to early 2000s alternative rock. With nods to artists such as Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, Nothing More, and Five Finger Death Punch to legends like Ozzy Osbourne, Heart and Metallica, Misty Eyed is not shy to exploring their sound and pulling influences from a multitude of artists and genres. Firmly rooted in the idea that our own personal realities are only a collection of the perspectives around us, Misty Eyed showcases these beliefs in the music and lyrics they write; showing that no two people have the same story and that each of those stories deserve to be displayed in their most authentic and genuine form. Formed in 2016, Megan, John, and Wes have continued to grow their sound and their platform. With notable performances alongside of Hollywood Undead, DIAMANTE, Lacey Sturm, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, a stand out appearence in Virginia at Blue Ridge Rock Fest with a slate to return again in 2021, Misty Eyed has no shortage of growth ahead of them. After signing with 59 X Records in 2019 and bringing new life to one of their first tracks with S.O.S anyone can see their reign will only grow. https://mistyeyedofficial.wixsite.com/mistyeyed https://www.facebook.com/MistyEyedGA https://open.spotify.com/album/4DwjwC1A2BSF2JPYsTnGqY https://music.apple.com/us/album/run-single/1553962084 This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! Another DC area band playing Blue Ridge Rock Fest? YES PLEASE!!!! Today I bring to you a band playing day 4 of the festival, Watersdeep! Their latest release, "The Worst Is Behind Us" is an absolute banger, and is a definite must listen. The group now boasts two 7 string guitars, expanding upon their original vision with room for plenty of musical experimentation. https://open.spotify.com/artist/3yJ1avXkCegVma4zMZMOWu https://www.facebook.com/watersdeepband/ https://www.instagram.com/watersdeepband/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz1eibVWYrfCqJ516YQQ8Dw This episode is proudly brought to you by: Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off Mack Weldon: https://www.mackweldon.com/suckit Promo Code "SUCKIT" for 20% off! Says Tara: “I prefer to think of the guitar as a form of art and not just a tool to create music with, which is why there are four instrumental tracks on Evil Enough. My musical taste varies widely, and though I’m a huge fan of the instrumental guitar genre, my favourite bands have a vocalist and a guitarist that really takes advantage of melodies and not just pure shred.” About She Will Rock You: The goal of She Will Rock You has always been to educate our listeners.
