Black on Black Cinema dives deep into Is God Is (2026), Aleshea Harris' feature directorial debut adapted from her Obie Award-winning stage play. Starring Kara Young as "The Rough One" and Mallori Johnson as "The Quiet One," the film follows twin sisters bearing the disfiguring burn scars of a childhood tragedy, ordered by their bedridden mother to kill the abusive father who destroyed their family. With Janelle Monáe, Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, Erika Alexander, and Mykelti Williamson rounding out the cast, and Tessa Thompson and Janicza Bravo producing. We analyze Harris' genre-blending, part western grind house, part noir, part dark comedy; and how she translates her stage play to cinema. We break down how the film confronts generational trauma, absent and intimate partner violence, and the totality of Black womanhood with brutal honesty. Sterling K. Brown cast against type as a villain is inspired. Black women's rage played straight, not for laughs or shame, is the film's greatest achievement.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Black on Black Cinema reviews Michael (2026), Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson biopic starring Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop. While Jaafar delivers a great impression of his uncle Michael, the film itself is a shallow, sanitized music biopic that refuses to engage with Jackson's complexity and controversies. Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) crafts a visually stunning but emotionally hollow portrait that hits every musical biopic cliché—rise to fame, family dysfunction, creative genius, tragic decline, and rise again without taking risks or offering fresh insight into one of music's most complicated icons. We break down why the film fails despite strong performances, analyzing how it sidesteps difficult questions about Jackson's life, allegations, and legacy in favor of a safe, reverential approach. The Thriller recreation is impressive, the musical sequences are well-executed, and Jaafar's physical transformation is remarkable—but beneath the spectacle lies a film afraid to be honest about its subject. We discuss what a truly great Michael Jackson film would require, compare it to other music biopics, examine the Jackson estate's involvement and creative control, and explore why Hollywood keeps making shallow biopics instead of complex character studies. Essential viewing for understanding how NOT to make a music biopic.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Ryan Coogler's much glazed box-office smash is Yosra's pick this month. It's a vampire horror about life and times in the Jim Crow South with a banging Blues soundtrack and a lot to say about cultural appropriation, colonialism and the Black experience. Does its midway handbrake turn work or is it too reminiscent of a film Mick and Hannah would rather forget? Do the not one but two Michael B Jordans bring out the actor's best? Is Jack O'Connell under control? And could we love Wunmi Mosaku any more? Find out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this week's episode of Born to Watch, the boys step back into the ring for a full Creed 2015 Movie Review, diving deep into the legacy sequel that had the impossible task of continuing one of cinema's most iconic franchises. The Rocky series is sacred ground for movie lovers, sports fans and anyone who's ever wanted to punch frozen meat in a warehouse while inspirational music blasts in the background. But can Creed escape the shadow of Rocky Balboa and become something more than just another nostalgia cash grab?Whitey, G-Man and Dan on the Land lace up the gloves to unpack Ryan Coogler's 2015 boxing drama starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson. The boys discuss whether Adonis Creed's search for identity mirrors the movie's own struggle to forge a new path while still leaning heavily on the Rocky formula fans know and love. The crew debates whether Creed should've been a "hit it and quit it" one-off film, with Whitey arguing the sequels may have actually hurt the legacy of the original movie. There's also a breakdown of the emotional parallels between Rocky and Apollo Creed, why sports movies continue to hit men directly in the soul, and whether boxing films are basically mandatory viewing for blokes everywhere.Dan on the Land brings his own unique "pugilist" expertise to the review after heading straight from boxing training into the recording session. Naturally, this leads to discussions about outlaw dirt bike gangs, whiskey-throttling into barbed wire fences, and whether Michael B. Jordan actually fights like a real boxer or just looks good doing it on camera. The boys also dive into the film's incredible cinematography, especially the famous one-shot fight scene against Leo Sporino. Dan explains why the boxing choreography in Creed is miles ahead of the original Rocky films, while Whitey questions whether the movie rushes Adonis into world-level fights too quickly without earning it first. There's a huge conversation about the movie's emotional side, too. Does Creed actually succeed as a character study in the same way the original Rocky did? Was Rocky's cancer storyline genuinely moving or just emotional manipulation? And did the filmmakers wait too long before finally unleashing the iconic Rocky music cues everyone was waiting for?As always, the episode goes completely off the rails in classic Born to Watch fashion. The boys somehow detour into discussions about awkward TV scenes, The Wire connections, Ryan Gosling in The Big Short, The Hateful Eight, bum jokes, cowboy hats in Cape Town clubs, and why Whitey believes Pretty Ricky Conlan is one of the weakest final opponents in the entire Rocky universe. There's also a deep dive into Ryan Coogler's career, including Fruitvale Station, Black Panther and Sinners, plus a breakdown of Michael B. Jordan's rise to superstardom. The boys discuss Stallone's Oscar-nominated performance as Rocky Balboa and whether he was robbed of the Academy Award after winning the Golden Globe. On top of all that, you'll get the usual Born to Watch segments, including Overs and Unders, Hit/Sleeper/Dud, box office breakdowns, Rotten Tomatoes scores, and the famous Critical Thinking segment where the boys tackle the important questions, like whether you can realistically wear a grey tracksuit into a hip hop club.If you love boxing movies, Rocky nostalgia, hilarious tangents and three Aussie idiots trying to unpack one of the best sports dramas of the modern era, this episode is for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Creed the best Rocky movie since the original? Did the sequels ruin the legacy of Creed? Was Stallone robbed of the Oscar? And most importantly… could you catch the chicken?#Creed #Rocky #CreedReview #MichaelBJordan #SylvesterStallone #BoxingMovies #BornToWatch #MoviePodcast #SportsMovies #FilmReview

Not now, Klansmen, I’m killing vampires! “Sinners” got nominated for all the awards, and it’s also a vampire (with a hint of zombie?) movie. We love it when genre movies get attention, and Ryan Coogler keeps putting out bangers, so we’re all in on the story of magical music opening the door to eldrich horror—oh, and also it’s the deep south in the 1930s so there’s some horrendous racism too! Black on Black Cinema examines Black Belt Jones (1974), the groundbreaking Blaxploitation martial arts film that solidified Jim Kelly as an action star following his breakout role in Enter the Dragon. Directed by Oscar Williams and produced by Warner Bros during the height of the Blaxploitation era, the film stars Kelly as a martial arts instructor who battles the mob to protect his community's karate school from a crooked land deal. Co-starring Gloria Hendry as Sydney, Scatman Crothers as Pop Byrd, and featuring incredible fight choreography that showcased Kelly's karate championship skills, Black Belt Jones became a cult classic that merged kung fu cinema with Black urban action. We break down the film's cultural significance as one of the first major films to center a Black martial arts hero, analyze its approach to representing Black power and community resistance, discuss the chemistry between Kelly and Hendry, examine the fight sequences, and explore how the film fits into both Blaxploitation and martial arts cinema history. Plus: the film's influence on Black action cinema, Jim Kelly's career trajectory, and why Black Belt Jones remains essential viewing for understanding 1970s Black representation in Hollywood genre filmmaking.Black on Black Cinema is a long-running podcast featuring in-depth Black movie reviews and frank conversations that matter to the Black community. Host Jesse Jackson opens with reactions to a leaked Springsteen rehearsal set list, predicting a more political “Land of Hope and Dreams/No King” tour. Returning guest Maryanne Janosik, a historian researching Springsteen's Catholic upbringing and its influence, discusses the tour as a spiritual, “gospel-like” continuum tied to servant leadership, roots music, and civic engagement, noting the symbolic arc from Minneapolis to Washington. The conversation shifts to film, including why Ryan Coogler's Sinners resonated (genre-blending, music mythology, culture), Oscar-season dynamics, mixed feelings on Deliver Me From Nowhere, a review of Project Hail Mary, and a strong recommendation for Baz Luhrmann's restored Elvis concert film EPiC. 00:00 Prepared Tour Statement 02:53 Meet Marianne Again 04:02 Catholic Roots And Purpose 07:44 Stewardship Over Rapture 10:45 Frankenstein And Redemption 12:14 Art Life And Our Town 15:56 Tour Arc And Activism 17:28 Just Here For The Music 21:14 Roy Orbison Transformation 24:39 From Tour Talk To Movies 27:50 Why Sinners Matters 33:31 Barn Dance Breakdown 34:56 Bold Films vs Safe Picks 36:17 Why Anderson Won 37:40 Jordan's Award Season Edge 39:14 Marty Supreme Campaign Backlash 41:09 Age Bias in Best Actor 42:49 Why Jordan Beat the Bias 44:28 Springsteen Biopic Misses Spark 49:46 Project Hail Mary Review 53:36 Elvis Concert Film Revival 58:43 Wrap Up and Farewell Learn more about your ad choices. This is a featured conversation from another show on the Inflection Network: Jenkins & Jonez. In this episode, the hosts break down the Oscars through the lens of Sinners, Michael B. Jordan, and Ryan Coogler—looking at what gets recognized, what gets overlooked, and why those gaps exist. The conversation expands into a broader discussion about cultural impact versus institutional validation, and how success is often defined differently depending on who’s doing the measuring. While rooted in film and pop culture, the throughline is familiar: staying grounded in your work and perspective even when external recognition doesn’t fully align. Jenkins & Jonez brings a sharper, more unfiltered voice to the kinds of conversations we explore here—offering a different angle on resilience, identity, and navigating the highs and lows that come with any journey.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When the Oscar nominations were announced this year, Ryan Coogler's “Sinners” set a record. It received sixteen nominations, the most for any film ever. The fact that it's, in part, a vampire movie, made by a director who's not yet forty, makes that feat all the more remarkable. Coogler—who previously directed “Creed” and “Black Panther”—sat down with the New Yorker staff writer Jelani Cobb to discuss the recurrent themes of history, faith, and race in his work, and how he refracted them through the lens of horror in “Sinners.” This segment originally aired on April 11, 2025. Starting off in FOLLOW UP, we've got a tax economist who actually made money betting against the "efficiency" of Elon's budget-slashing fever dreams, while Tesla is busy trying to dodge a $243 million jury verdict for an Autopilot-assisted fatality. Not content with being legally liable, Tesla is also suing the California DMV because they're offended someone called their "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving" marketing deceptive—ironic, since Jack Dorsey just "proactively" halved the staff at Block to make room for more AI slop. Speaking of which, Goldman Sachs is here to remind us that all this AI spending added a grand total of zero to the US GDP last year, mostly because we're just exporting all that cash to overseas chip makers while 80% of execs admit the tech hasn't actually done anything for productivity yet.Moving into IN THE NEWS, Sam Altman had the audacity to compare ChatGPT's energy-sucking habits to the 20-year evolution of a human, though the internet wasn't exactly buying the "my bot is just like a baby" defense. Anthropic actually stood its ground against the Pentagon's demand for killer robots and mass surveillance, so naturally, the military just signed a deal to put Elon's Grok in their classified systems instead—because what could go wrong with an "edgy" LLM in the war room? Meanwhile, cities are dumping AI surveillance contracts as citizens start a literal "smash-the-snitch-box" campaign against Flock's license plate readers, Google's AI is busy inserting racial slurs into news alerts, and the White House is apparently harboring a staffer moonlighting as a racist "masterpiece" creator on X. We've also got Reddit being slapped with a $20 million fine in the UK for being lazy with age checks, while Discord and Apple scramble to build verification tools that hopefully won't leak your entire identity to a hacker in Belarus. In MEDIA CANDY, the Paramount-Skydance merger is leaving the industry in a cold sweat of "synergy" layoffs, but at least we're getting more Game of Thrones spinoffs and Star Trek reboots to rot our brains. Face/Off 2 lost its director, Ryan Coogler is taking on The X-Files, and Google wants to use AI to turn music into generic "lo-fi" background noise for the masses.Over in APPS & DOODADS, OpenAI is planning a 2027 smart speaker that literally watches you through a camera—because you definitely wanted a $300 Sam Altman-shaped eye in your kitchen—while the Dark Sky creators are back with "Acme Weather" for the low price of $25 a year.We wrap up THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE with a deep dive into "Under Pressure" and Coruscant's urban sprawl, leaving us to reminisce about the days when KPT Bryce was the pinnacle of tech—back when "generative art" was just a fractal that took six hours to render.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.SquareSpace - go to squarespace.com/GRUMPY for a free trial.
