On 16 July, Turkey marked a decade since the failed coup that shook the nation. Its defeat is widely viewed as the final curtain on military meddling in politics and as the moment when President Erdogan cemented his grip on power, yet the aftershocks for human rights and foreign relations still reverberate. Its defeat is widely viewed as the final curtain on military meddling in politics and as the moment when President Erdogan cemented his grip on power, yet the aftershocks for human rights and foreign relations still reverberate. A decade ago, factions within the Turkish military, composed of rebellious officers and followers of the Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, launched a dramatic attempt to topple President Erdogan. "I remember, as a soldier, those who started the coup," recalls Murat Aslan, an army officer at the time. "I had no idea that there were members of this organisation (Gulen followers); they were very secretive." Erdogan tightens his grip Now a security analyst at SETA, a pro-government think tank, Aslan describes the failed coup as a turning point that reshaped the course of Turkish democracy. "The message was very clear. Turkish society collectively rejected it," said Aslan. "Thousands took to the streets; that's more than challenging, because you see tanks rolling and people trying to stop them, trying to capture the soldiers with their rifles. It takes more than courage." More than 250 people died resisting the coup. In the aftermath, Erdogan imposed emergency rule and expanded his presidential authority through a sharply contested national referendum. "This military intervention actually consolidated the Erdogan-led government," Aslan added. Turkey's military, relations with US to survive failed coup, ruling party vice-president Hundreds of soldiers and officers faced prosecution as the government declared an end to the army's long history of political interference. Since 1960, the military had orchestrated three coups, the most recent in 1980. A decade of purges and closures In the wake of the failed takeover, tens of thousands were purged from state institutions, many never returning even after being cleared. More than a thousand NGOs were shut down during two years of emergency rule. Milena Buyum, senior Turkey campaigner for Amnesty International, acknowledges the grave threat to democracy posed by the attempted coup: "The state has a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of its citizens and to investigate criminal acts like the ones carried out that night," said Buyum. Turkey's Erdogan warms to Russia after West coup response However, Buyum warns that many of the measures introduced under the state of emergency have since been written into ordinary law, permanently curtailing fundamental freedoms: "The right to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and association: the impact on civil society was felt very sharply and starkly in the immediate aftermath of the coup, but that impact continues," said Buyum.  Ankara's alliances The failed coup also drove a wedge into Turkey's long-standing alliance with the United States. "Ankara saw the hand of the United States behind the failed coup attempt," claims Ozgur Unluhisarcikli, who leads the Ankara office of the German Marshall Fund. Even before the attempted coup, Erdogan's relations with President Barack Obama had been tense. Obama's belated support, offered only after the coup had failed, fuelled Ankara's suspicions of US complicity, particularly as Washington refused to extradite Fethullah Gulen, whom Erdogan blamed for orchestrating the plot. Gulen denied the accusation until his death in 2024. Turks in France divided on failed coup Unluhisarcikli observes that US-Turkish relations remained strained for years, while Erdogan gravitated towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose rapid show of support stood in sharp contrast to Washington's hesitation. "Putin was among the first leaders, I believe even the first, to extend political support to the elected government in Ankara, and in those days I believe that support mattered greatly to President Erdogan," Unluhisarcikli said. Rumours still persist in Turkey today that Moscow warned Erdogan on the day of the failed coup. Unluhisarcikli says it was only with the election of President Donald Trump, who shared Erdogan's animosity towards Obama and Joe Biden, that US-Turkish relations began to thaw, a shift highlighted at this month's NATO summit in Ankara. Yet the wave of mass arrests during the summit, enabled by post-coup emergency powers, served as a stark reminder that the shadow of the failed takeover still looms over Turkey.

On 15 July, over 300 people were killed and more than 2,100 injured when rogue soldiers commandeered warplanes, tanks and helicopters in a failed coup attempt against President Tayyip Erdogan. This week on the Mark Levin Show, look at Zohran Mamdani, who has contributed nothing substantial to America. Mamdani's anti-American speech was a string of Marxist propaganda slogans about trillionaires amid hunger, monopolies and oligarchs, wealth created by laborers' hard hands yet held by special interests' soft hands, and supremacy for a select few instead of equality. People don't care about the identities or backgrounds of those who produce goods and services, they only want quality and value. Capitalism is the least racist, oligarchical, and discriminatory system. Later, there's no reason to sell 100 F-35's to Turkey. Erdogan is a national-socialist Islamist, a brutal dictator, key backer of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, and a completely unreliable member of NATO. He threatened to destroy Israel the other day, and the administration not only said nothing but went ahead with the F-35 and jet engine sales and will lift all sanctions against Turkey, and we are doing so while lavishly praising Erdogan. This is troubling and it will have to be dealt with by future American administrations for decades to come. It was absolutely unnecessary. Meanwhile, we praise Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey while criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and pushing him to make all kinds of concessions to Hamas and Hezbollah. Also, the Democrat Party and its Senate leadership endorsed, and backed Graham Platner despite multiple red flags, including allegations of physically abusing a woman, a Nazi concentration camp guard tattoo he claimed ignorance of, offensive Reddit posts, and mockery of wounded military veterans. None of these crossed a line for them. But Sen Bernie Sanders and a line of Democrats have finally urged him to exit the race, after he was accused of rape – but he hasn't left the race yet. Also, the Iranian regime sank three crude oil tankers and fired ballistic missiles at U.S. bases. In response, President Trump ordered powerful strikes on Iran and vowing to hit back every time Iran strikes. We saw this coming. The MOU didn't last because the regime can't be trusted. We never should have put conditions on our military - they should have been allowed from the start to go in and take this regime out. Now we need to keep up military and economic pressure until this regime caves. Furthermore, the Democrat Party has developed a significant Israel and Jewish problem in roughly three years. It has rebranded itself as the champion of civil rights and liberties, though it actually promotes Marxist and socialist economic agendas—such as healthcare, schooling, and housing for all—framed as civil rights. Democrats now frequently run on anti-AIPAC, anti-Israel, anti-Jewish, and anti-Semitic platforms, with many being Islamists or Marxists, and little pushback from party leadership. Rahm Emanuel, a failed Chicago mayor who wants to run for President, subtly condemns Israel to court the radicals while claiming broader American support. President Trump caused a stir this week at the NATO summit as he praised the host, Turkish President Erdogan, and ⁠said he was willing to lift sanctions on Turkey and sell Ankara F-35 fighter jets.  These comments saw an immediate reaction on Capitol Hill as members of Congress urged House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to be prepared to use every legislative tool available to prevent Turkey's reinstatement into the F-35 program, reminding them that US law prohibits the transfer of F-35s to Turkey unless Ankara no longer possesses the Russian S-400 system.  In the meantime, new reports emerged on Friday that a deal could be taking shape that would see Turkey transfer its S-400 missiles ​to an unnamed Gulf country in order to convince Washington to lift sanctions and pave the way for its re-entry into the F-35 program. F-35s were not the only item on the NATO summit agenda making headlines. As reporters on the ground have noted, NATO leaders were also making quiet progress on a new kind of NATO that will see them take on more and more responsibility for the defense of Europe. Something that unfortunately, but predictably, did not receive the attention it deserves as world leaders gathered in Ankara was Turkey's alarming human rights record. “Someone said, oh, you look like Steve Bannon, and I love you for that… No, I just shaved my hair and lost some pounds.” — Kaya Genç on Trumpism's global fanbase The NATO circus rumbled into the Turkish capital of Ankara this week resembling more of a gun show than an alliance summit. Ringmaster Donald J. Trump promised Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the F-35s and lifted the very sanctions that Trump himself had imposed. Erdogan handed out pistols to the assembled leaders — with poor old Keir Starmer (no Winston Churchill) leaving his at the airport. And observing all these clowns from Istanbul was the Turkish novelist and essayist Kaya Genç. As a contributor to the anthology How We See It: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump, Genç is a keen America watcher. He first set foot in the United States in January 2017, stumbling into New York City's protests against Trump 1.0's Muslim-ban. What seemed temporary — Trump as a bizarre historical aberration — looked to Erdogan-literate Kaya Genç like an operating manual for 21st century populist authoritarianism. Turkey, Genç argues, has spent a century Americanizing itself. First with the 20th century Marshall Plan, the highways, the Hilton hotels, and finally an American-style executive presidency operating on the politics of referendum. Now, he says, the whole world — from Turkey to France and Britain — is living with the consequences of 21st century Americanization. Like a more functional NATO, right-wing populists operate like an international alliance. Erdogan, Trump, Meloni, Le Pen and Farage are like a club in which projecting strength at summits buys impunity at home. And this club has a house style. Turkish right-wing columnists, Genç reports, deploy Michael Corleone on their X banners — exactly David Thomson's warning earlier this week about Hollywood's glorification of on-screen violence. So, in a way, America observers like Kaya Genç got a sneak preview of Trump's America in movies like The Godfather. First as cinema, then as life. From both Turkey and Russia with love. Five Takeaways •       NATO: The Club of the Mighty. The night before the summit, activists were rounded up in Ankara — LGBTQ rights defenders, labor unionists, journalists — as threats to NATO security. In Turkish civil society, Genç explains, NATO doesn't represent the liberal world order; it represents the mighty, and has since the writers of the 1960s. The summit itself was a military passion show: jets overhead, revolvers gifted among the attendees, and a host country whose ruling politicians no longer hide that arms exports — including the drones Ukraine used so effectively — are now the mission of the Turkish economy. •       Trump: A Star Among Right-Wing Voters Everywhere. In India, a chubbier, longer-haired Genç was once told: you look like Steve Bannon, and I love you for that. The Turkish media savaged Biden but forgives Trump everything — Netanyahu is the villain of the Turkish press, while Trump speaks the language. Not Turkish (though he tried a phrase): the language of the presidential system. The Turkish right's America has always been selective — yes to the death penalty and gun ownership, no to labor rights, free expression, and the trans movement — an instinct as old as the poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy's advice to copy Germany's industriousness and leave out the decadence. •       Living the Consequences of Americanization. Turkey began its republic in the 1920s on the European model — parliament, proportional voices for an ethnically diverse country. After the Marshall Plan, it re-forged itself on the American one: highways, Hilton hotels, burger joints, and eventually an American-style executive presidency, approved by referendum over the objections of people like Genç. That's why Trump 1.0 read so differently in the two countries: in New York it looked like an exception to be fought off; in Ankara it looked like how American politics works — and something to imitate. •       Populists Learn Like Large Language Models. Did Erdogan create the model, or is Trump teaching Erdogan? Neither, says Genç: it's a dialogue — right-wing populism learning from itself the way AI learns from language models. The AKP ran a Gramscian culture war through the institutions; Meloni, Le Pen, and Farage apply the cosmetic soft brush that makes fascist-rooted politics presentable. Join the club, project strength at the summit, and whatever you do domestically stops mattering. Putin, notably, is not in the curriculum: Turkey is returning its S-400s to get the F-35s, and Russia is becoming a footnote. •       The Hologram and the Pushback. Ekrem Imamoglu — the Istanbul mayor Genç profiles in The Dial as the hologram candidate — won the city with socialist municipalism, and the skeptics who warned it would alienate the pious were simply wrong. Soft liberalism, the faith Genç himself held since the nineties, is disappearing; the pushback is finding its heroes in dead poets — Rosa Luxemburg, and Sevgi Soysal, whose novel Walking is out in English from New York Review Books. In the Middle East, Iran held days of public mourning for its late Supreme Leader, while fresh exchanges with the United States cast further doubt on hopes for a lasting ceasefire. In France, Marine Le Pen's political fortunes were transformed by a landmark appeal court ruling that revived her presidential ambitions. And on the football pitch, Les Bleus moved a step closer to a third World Cup title as Kylian Mbappé hit back at racist abuse from a Paraguayan senator.

What will Mark Carney and Keir Starmer do? Trump should have no problem, as long as he has enough suit pockets empty of silverware and signing pens. A judge has ordered that E. Jean Carroll's $5 million be released to her. Maybe, she got it today. Federal Judge Emil Bove's verdict is that he luvs Donald. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, there's no reason to sell 100 F-35's to Turkey. Erdogan is a national-socialist Islamist, a brutal dictator, key backer of the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, and a completely unreliable member of NATO. He threatened to destroy Israel the other day, and the administration not only said nothing but went ahead with the F-35 and jet engine sales and will lift all sanctions against Turkey, and we are doing so while lavishly praising Erdogan. This is troubling and it will have to be dealt with by future American administrations for decades to come. It was absolutely unnecessary. Meanwhile, we praise Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey while criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and pushing him to make all kinds of concessions to Hamas and Hezbollah. Also, the Democrat Party and its Senate leadership endorsed, and backed Graham Platner despite multiple red flags, including allegations of physically abusing a woman, a Nazi concentration camp guard tattoo he claimed ignorance of, offensive Reddit posts, and mockery of wounded military veterans. None of these crossed a line for them. But Sen Bernie Sanders and a line of Democrats have finally urged him to exit the race, after he was accused of rape – but he hasn't left the race yet. Later, Mark Levin spoke at Christians United for Israel in Washington and stressed the unbreakable unity between Christians and Jews as weekend people against enemies who seek to kill them all, with no distinctions made. Today's Headlines: Graham Platner still hasn't dropped out of the Maine Senate race despite Bernie withdrawing his endorsement and a second sexual assault allegation — this time from an ex-girlfriend who says he removed condoms during sex without her consent, which is classified as sexual assault in several countries — and his campaign's response was to call it politically motivated and bring up Brett Kavanaugh. Even better, Platner is now reportedly negotiating what he wants in exchange for leaving, including demanding his replacement come from Bernie's political orbit, while the Maine Democratic Party has told his campaign they have no role in the process. Trump is at the NATO summit in Turkey where he's mad at the alliance, mad at Meloni again, wants Greenland again, appeared to fall asleep and needed Erdogan to physically steer him around the room, and seems willing to sell Turkey the F-35 jets Netanyahu specifically asked him not to sell — so the girls seem to be fighting. Meanwhile the Iran war Trump declared over at Versailles last month is very much back on, with Iran attacking three ships in the Strait of Hormuz in the last 24 hours, the US responding with "powerful strikes," and the administration revoking the sanctions waivers that allowed Iran to sell oil, making the memorandum of understanding worth approximately nothing. And Trump announced he's building a granite helipad on the White House lawn, paid for by Lockheed Martin subsidiary Sikorsky, with no timeline for completion, because a helipad is what matters while the world is on fire. Meanwhile, the DOJ accidentally sent the sealed second volume of Jack Smith's classified documents report — the one Trump has spent over a year keeping hidden — to the defense lawyers of the former prosecutor currently being prosecuted for leaking that exact report, and the only reason it's still secret is because her lawyers were more careful with it than the government was. On AI, Meta's AI safety strategy involves paying adults to pretend to be teenagers and feed suicide and sex prompts to competitor chatbots, which they describe as "comprehensive AI safety benchmarking," and OpenAI is reportedly offering the US government a 5% stake in the company.
