The Doc, U R… Podcast aims to empower physicians (from medical school and beyond) and combat the stigmas surrounding their mental health and diminish physicians affected by limiting beliefs, working small, and burnout. We aim to increase awareness and education about physicians' and other healthcare workers' mental health challenges. The objective of the podcast is to de-stigmatize physicians' mental health. The goals are to humanize physicians, bring awareness to their healing needs, and advance our understanding of suicide to strategically prevent suicide attempts. The theme this season is “Navigating Mental Health & Medicine: The Cost of Burnout.” This week, Dr. Kiki speaks with Dr. Oluwatomi "Tomi" Mitchell about the shackles traditional medical practice places on physicians and the importance of advocating for each other in order to break them. Dr. Tomi Mitchell is a Board-Certified Family Physician, and Certified Health & Wellness Coach with over a decade of experience running multiple businesses and being a mother and wife. She received her Coaching certification in 2021 and has been practicing Family Medicine since 2011, both inpatient (hospital-based) and outpatient (clinic-based). She uses the four principles of family medicine to guide her holistic wellness practice and focuses on providing client-centered “whole person” care. As both a family physician and a certified holistic wellness coach, Dr. Mitchell is committed to providing a “whole person” approach to wellness.Content warning: brief mentions of complications to a baby after childbirth.~~~~HIGHLIGHTSDr. Kiki has been featured in:The DOBlack Girl VenturesWired Magazine Medium~~~~GUEST INTAKE FORMInterested in being a guest? We start by asking Dr. Tomi Mitchell what a Board Certified Family Physician is.   She explains she's done over and above the necessary to practice.  Dr. Tomi is certified in two provinces in Canada.  She also explains that you are required to continue with the education yearly, and she has done so for the past ten years.Dr. Tomi went through a near-death experience and shares this story with us.  After giving birth to her second child, her daughter stopped breathing, and Dr. Tomi required resuscitating her and taking her to the hospital.  They told her it was just reflux, however, Dr. Tomi did not take that as an answer.  Eventually, they did put her daughter in ICU.  After doing so, she was relieved, however, she went to the washroom and began hemorrhaging very badly. That was the first of five hemorrhages.  The last one was so painful, and at this point, Dr. Tomi was losing faith.   She said that it was a strange feeling to feel the pain for her toddler, and her feelings for her newborn were different because she hadn't had the chance to truly connect since birth.  Very compelling story. We also spoke to Dr. Tomi's Mental Health and Wellness Coaching business, and how this part of her life is fulfilling, knowing the changes she's making in other people's lives. You can learn more about Dr. Tomi by going to www.holisticwellnessstrategies.comMore about Dr. Tomi Mitchell:Dr. Tomi Mitchell is a Certified Mental Health & Wellness Coach who helps working professionals overcome mental health challenges & burnout.  After a decade of running a medical practice, she was left burnt out and frustrated with the limitations of the traditional health care system. "I am a proud science-trained medical doctor and concerned mother. I am not going to remain silent when the biggest tragedies are yet to hit earth yet. Like seriously, I do not want to become like the dinosaurs. History wasn't too kind to them. Just saying. Scientists say the worst is yet to come if America doesn't listen. What do scientists know anyway? You might disagree with my words, but If you want to get angry, write many insults, and be in denial, go ahead. I am a mother bear, and I do bite, as it's called self-defense. To all my fellow scientists and torchbearers of the truth, I salute you. Let us not stop speaking the truth until real change happens." Tomi Mitchell is a family physician. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Who needs scientists? It's not like we listen to them anyway." I strongly believe we are going to have a huge spike in mental health crisis mental health is the foundation of all health. And once you have mental health and wellness, you're complete. Because the other term I actually coined myself is a holistic wellness strategist. Now that's what how I see it, but lay person, it's a mental health and wellness coach. So the holistic part refers to the wellness wheel, and the different components of our health. And if you address each part, you will be balanced and healthy. 01:02  Getting Worse 04:39 Self Harm 06:18 Domestic Violence 08:24 Holistic Health 12:25 Denial 19:09 Wellness Wheel 22:00 Racism www.holisticwellnesstrategies.comDr. Tomi Mitchell is a Certified Mental Health & Wellness Coach who helps professionals overcome mental health challenges and burnout. Episode #66. May was busy but June is already here and more new episodes are coming up. This summer we are adding more faith conversations to the podcast. It has been a goal and journey from the beginning to explore our love for God and our faith in Jesus with mental illness. Why do Christians struggle to get help? Why is their stigma in the church? Can your faith in God lead you to not ask for help? Many are asking this question and we believe many should not have to be in the dark, or in a place of silence and suffering. God helps us tell the truth and He helps us face our fears. This all makes more sense to us as we open up and walk in the light. Dr. Mitchell's BIO: Mental Health & Wellness Coach.
