Artificial Intelligence. As a child of the 80s, I remember fondly one of my favorite movies and its subsequent sequels about when the machines gain self-awareness and take over. If you are too young and don't recall that movie, perhaps you remember the catch phrase “I'll Be Back.” If you still don't know, good golly, get out and go see The Terminator! When I hear about artificial intelligence and thinking about that movie, I can't help to be a little apprehensive about using it. I don't think we are on any cusp of machines taking over, but we do have a powerful new tool that has the potential to revolutionize how we approach medicine, patient care, and our jobs. We are joined by a frequent AI user today to discuss AI in more detail. Connect with The Host! Subscribe to This Podcast Now! The ultimate success for every podcaster – is FEEDBACK! Everyone has felt overwhelmed by loud noises, bright lights, or strong smells — but for people with schizophrenia, sensory overload can be constant and intense. Sensory processing dysfunction can make everyday sights, sounds, and touches feel overwhelming, leading to a phenomenon called “sensory flooding.” It can also make it harder to filter out background noise, identify sensory sources, and focus on tasks — sometimes even contributing to symptoms of psychosis like hallucinations and delusions. Hosts Rachel Star Withers and Gabe Howard explore how schizophrenia affects the senses and what this means for daily life. They're joined by Dr. Ray Kotwicki, a psychiatrist and Chief Medical Officer at Hightop Health, who shares expert insights into the science behind sensory processing challenges and how to manage them. Tune in for a fascinating look at the intersection of schizophrenia, sensory overload, and mental health! To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest, Dr. Ray Kotwicki, MD, MPH, DFAPA, is a psychiatrist and the Chief Medical Officer at Hightop Health. Dr. Kotwicki trained as a Department of Energy Fellow and was a Medical Scholar at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He completed post-graduate training at Harvard Medical School, the Boston University School of Medicine, and Emory University, where he earned a Master in Public Health degree in Health Policy and Management. He remains a full professor on the adjunctive faculty at both the Emory University School of Medicine as well as the Rollins School of Public Health. Kotwicki has presented more than 425 invited lectures, symposia, and seminars to thousands of attendees. He is recognized as a trusted national expert and renowned speaker on current issues in psychiatry, mental health, professionalism, and wellness. Our host, Rachel Star Withers, creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage and let others like her know they are not alone and can still live an amazing life. She has written Lil Broken Star: Understanding Schizophrenia for Kids and a tool for schizophrenics, To See in the Dark: Hallucination and Delusion Journal. Fun Fact: She has wrestled alligators. As the WPATH files and Cass Report reveal, even the doctors and scientists can't fully explain the short term and long term consequences of gender "affirming" surgeries and wrong-sex hormones. How on earth can a mentally distressed minor or their troubled parent consent to that type of surgery? Makes the threat of suicide seem much more like blackmail than life-saving care. Dr. Jill Simons examines how the American College of Pediatricians is actually following the science and ethical principles of care, and why that benefits mentally distressed patients. Dr. Jill Simons is a Board-Certified Pediatrician. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed residency, also at the University of Wisconsin. As a resident she was involved in child advocacy issues and co-authored papers on Fitness for Youth, and Child and Infant Car Restraint Safety. She was in private practice in Minnesota until becoming Executive director of The American College of Pediatricians. Dr. Simons served several years as Chairman of Pediatrics for Mercy and Unity Hospitals from and helped establish the hospitals' NICU and pediatric trauma programs. Far too often, the medical boards tend to gravitate towards what makes the most money or what is politically expedient, and that presents a problem for the members they represent, and the patients whose interests they are supposed to look after. If you are like me, you love the Olympics. Winter or Summer, it doesn't matter. Watching the best of the best athletes from around the world in so many different sports is just incredible. My wife and I are partial to the track and field events, but our TV rarely has anything else on but the Olympics during its run. Since the 2024 Olympics in Paris are here, I thought it would be interesting to talk about Olympic medicine with a pediatric sports medicine physician who served as an Olympic team physician. If you are coming out of fellowship now, you have requirements for training in the use of ultrasound, both diagnostically and for injections. During my fellowship 20 years ago, we weren't talking about ultrasound use and I probably missed that boat by about 5 years or so. I personally don't use ultrasound in my practice because I haven't really set aside time to train since fellowship ended. I'm one of those people who insist on being really good at something and I just don't see where I have the free time to teach this older dog a new trick. But I also have had a harder time finding where ultrasound fits in to my pediatric sports medicine practice. I see a few things that I think it would be great to have a ultrasound to look at quickly. This is where my guest comes in today. I have a pediatric sports medicine physician who uses ultrasound regularly in his practice to teach all of us how ultrasound can benefit us in pediatric sports. As we all know, the world of youth sports today can sometimes be described as sheer chaos for some families. The frequent travel for competitions, the never-ending quest to keep up with the Joneses, the fear of missing out on developing your child if you don't get them signed up in preschool for sports camps and skill development, numerous practices, the narrative that you must be involved year-round to be better. As a sport medicine physician, I stress with families we want sports to be fun, not painful, especially when talking with our pre high school aged athletes. But how can parents support kids without being that parent that everyone sees riding their kid for their mistakes and living their sports life vicariously through their kids. Today on the podcast, we have a sports parent who created a website that's a valuable resource for parents and especially for every sports medicine professional who works with kids to know about. A common question I get in clinic when seeing patients for concussion is “what is the best helmet out there for my son or daughter?” Or what headgear is the best for sports that use headgear instead of helmets? Typically, we have the discussion that there is no helmet or headgear that prevents concussion, but we do know that some helmets and headgear perform better than other. But how is that determined? Today on the podcast we have the director of the Virginia Tech Helmet lab who will help us navigate the world of helmet and headgear ratings. We'll learn the process about testing and how you can use that information to make an informed decision for a helmet purchase. Connect with The Host! Subscribe to This Podcast Now! The 6th Concussion in Sport Group Meeting was last year around this time and earlier this year in June of 2023 the updated guidance from this group was published. A subtle but important change was made to the return to play progression. I've had several people reach out to me for clarification as to how we should be approaching this. We've also set out to tackle this for our Missouri high school athletes as to what revisions we may need to make to our protocols. But have we made this process too confusing for those who aren't in the sports medicine and sports concussion world? Today, we're going to do a quick take on the Concussion Return to Play process. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. David Minkoff. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He is board certified in pediatrics and has completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of California in San Diego, which included research in developing new medicines to fight viral disease. As a clinical faculty member at the University, he also served as co-director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Palomar Medical Center. For 12 years Dr. Minkoff worked in Emergency Medicine at the Community Hospital of New Port Richey, Florida which ranks in the top 100 hospitals in the U.S. This emergency room has a chest pain center considered in the top 1 percent of all such centers in the U.S. In addition to his traditional medical training, Dr. Minkoff has extensive post-graduate training in Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He is an expert in Functional Medicine, Chelation, Allergy Elimination, European Biological Medicine, Neural Therapy, Longevity/Aging Medicine, Enderlein Therapy, Insulin Potentiated Therapy, and more. With this training, he co-founded LifeWorks Wellness Center in 1997, one of the largest alternative medical clinics in the U.S. This wellness center combines more cutting-edge alternative therapies and modalities under the same roof than almost any other alternative clinic in the country. In 2000, he founded BodyHealth, a nutrition company which offers a unique range of dietary supplements to the public and practitioners. He is also currently on the board of Home Health Works, an agency which offers in-home care and which was founded by Dr. Minkoff's wife, Sue Minkoff R.N. In this episode, Dr. David Minkoff dives into oral healthcare and what you need to know about bone density if you have ever had a wisdom tooth extraction. Plus, Dr. Minkoff explains how 100% of root canals are actually infected. If you're looking for a science-based biological dentist, Dr. Minkoff reveals what kind of questions you should ask before becoming a new patient. [16:40] Check Your Bone Density If You've Had A Wisdom Tooth Extraction If you have a wisdom tooth pulled and the bone doesn't heal back in, you are left with a cavity. Normal bone density on a CT scan is zero. If there's a hole, it starts going into minus levels of bone. The body will put in biotoxins when there's an open hole, and you get infections there. The wisdom teeth will also affect the brain. So you'll want to make sure there are no infections. [18:30] Did You Know That 100% of Root Canals Are Infected? A tooth is an organ; each tooth is like a lung, brain, or heart. The pulp of the tooth is where the nerves are. If the cavity breaks through the enamel and gets into the pulp, the nerve gets inflamed because there's an infection in there that hurts. Not many people will put up with a toothache that's bad for too long. A root canal will kill the nerve and destroy the blood supply. Then, they put a metal post in the mouth. However, the infection is still there, and now you have a dead tooth. 100% of root canals are infected. [24:20] Looking For A New Dentist? These Are The Things You Need To Know Ask your dentist if they are a member of IAOMT. Learn more about IAOMT here: https://iaomt.org/ Also, ask if your dentist does root canals. If they do, you don't want them as your dentist. If your dentist isn't a believer, then why would you see them for your care? [35:00] Signaling Mechanisms: Understanding Satiety, Hunger, and Cravings The body is so inundated with biological toxins from the air, water, and food. The normal signaling mechanisms of the body about satiety, hunger, and craving are all off. When you start fasting, you will see normal regulation come back in. Most people won't put up with being hungry for 24 hours. If you end up fasting, good stuff will look good and bad stuff will look bad. 100% of every patient Dr. Minkoff sees in his clinic has a toxic gut. [38:15] Amino Acid Metabolism: Whey Protein vs. Meat and Eggs Most people are amino acid deficient. In whey protein, the percentage of nitrogen is about 16%. If you had 100 grams of whey protein, 16 grams is measurable nitrogen. When the amino acid enters the cell, it can be made into a protein. Whey protein is inefficient. However, meat and fish are about 33% net nitrogen utilized. Eggs are 48% net nitrogen utilized. [54:35] What PerfectAminos Can Do For Your Gut Health and Muscle Building Your doctor is unlikely to know anything about amino acids. There has never been any significant reaction or allergy to Dr. Minkoff's products. If you have gut problems, you will see improvements with PerfectAminos. There are a handful of knee injuries that are seen commonly in the adolescent age group. Patellar dislocations and subluxations rank high on that list. However, it's an injury that is sometimes misunderstood and there has been a tendency in the past to be conservative, at least to start, with non-operative management. But is that really the best choice or are the tides shifting? Today on the podcast I have a sports surgeon to discuss the wonderful world of patellar instability. Connect with The Host! I wanted to try something new today with the podcast. As I've become older and more seasoned, I've had a growing interest in history and the history of things, particularly in medicine. I was never a big history fan in high school. I tolerated it. Don't get me wrong, I had some great teachers of history in high school. But I was much more of a science and math nerd. For a while I've wanted to do an episode about Osgood Schlatter apophysitis, which is such a common problem in pediatrics. I did some digging into some of the historical articles about Osgood Schlatter and thought I'd take an episode to take about some of the interesting things I found and ways it was managed a century ago. Let's get some plutonium and the Delorean and take a trip back a century ago and talk some Osgood Schlatter. Connect with The Host! Subscribe to This Podcast Now! He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from UW-Milwaukee, a master's degree in public administration from Princeton University, and a law degree from New York University, and spent the bulk of his professional career as Senior and Supervisory Trial Attorney for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. A former track star and champion marathoner, he was inducted into the Athletic Halls of Fame at UW-Milwaukee and Wauwatosa East. But before all of Pat's accomplishments and honors, a unique entry on his resume that presaged all that was to come – he was, and remains, the youngest Equipment Manager and Assistant Trainer in professional sports history. And all because of a 25-word answer he wrote in 1969 to the question – why would you like to be a bat boy for the Milwaukee Brewers? He got the gig when he was just 15, and from that opportunity came the chance to also work for the Green Bay Packers. Then he hit the trifecta, as a ball boy for the new Milwaukee Bucks. But it was not an idyllic life growing up in Wauwatosa for Paddy and Dinty, and their five siblings. In fact, it was a living hell, because their parents – both of them successful and popular journalists – were alcoholics who fought constantly before finally separating.“The Luckiest Boy in the World” tells the amazing and inspirational story of how Pat McBride not only survived but thrived, first in locker rooms and arenas, then in medical clinics and the halls of academia. It is a real pleasure to welcome him to Madison BookBeat.

Otherwise, you can deplete the person, and they can have trouble. A full mineral spectrum occurs to keep them up to date and healthy. This process has to been done very safely to prevent harming a person”, replied David.Cholesterol is not the enemy-28:11“Why should we not shy away from cholesterol?” I asked David.“Most of the cholesterol in the body is made by the liver. A person needs cholesterol to make some important hormones in the body, such as cell membranes. It is a myth that cholesterol is harmful to the heart and causes cardiac arrest, in more than 50% of the people who had heart attacks had normal cholesterol percentage in their bodies. The therapy of reducing it does not help anyone live longer. Welcome back to the podcast! In this episode, Chantel got to speak with Dr. David Minkoff! Graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974, he went on to complete both a Pediatric Residency and a Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of California at San Diego. He worked at the University of California and Children’s Hospitals in San Diego as an attending physician in infectious disease while conducting original research on Ribaviron, a broad spectrum anti-viral agent to fight disease. He also co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine. In 1992, Dr. Minkoff’s wife Sue, a Registered Nurse, became interested in nutrition and health and began to go to lectures from some of the experts in the field. At the time, Dr. Minkoff was pretty fixed in his view of traditional medicine and it took a lot of convincing to get him to come to one of these lectures. After hearing Dr. Jeffrey Bland speak, Dr. Minkoff had a eureka moment and began pursuing the alternative field with a vengeance. Based on this new knowledge Dr. Minkoff and his wife set up a small clinic in 1997 to help some friends with their medical problems. What began as an experiment blossomed into Lifeworks Wellness Center, one of the most successful clinics for complementary medicine in the United States. In the process, he gained expertise in Biological medicine, integrative oncology, heavy metal detoxification, anti-aging medicine, hormone replacement therapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, neural and prolotherapy, homeopathy, and optimum nutrition. Everybody in the health world talks about the importance of protein, but it still remains grossly misunderstood. What is amino acid utilization, and what does it mean for us? What are the best foods for amino acid utilization? What happens when you don't get enough essential amino acids as it relates to protein turnover, healing, anabolism effect with training? On this episode, I’m joined by legendary physician, author and founder of LifeWorks Medical Center, BodyHealth, and PerfectAmino, Dr. David Minkoff, who shares the truth about protein we all should know about. We need healthy food and supplements so we can change the trend of society and the planet to save us from extinction. -Dr. David Minkoff Three Takeaways Different foods have different levels of amino acids and usability. Whole eggs are the best while whey and soy are really low in amino acids, and don’t move the needle. When you eat whey protein, the body can’t use the amino acid so it takes off the nitrogen you’re just left with a carb. You can’t make protein out of 3 amino acids, you need 8. At the start of the show, Dr. David shared how he got started in alternative healthcare, and how his wife’s experience with mercury toxicity led him down that path. Next, we talked about whether autoimmune disorders are being caused by toxic particulates, and why all that has a lot to do with gut health and the intestines. We talked about proteins, amino acid utilization, and the best sources of protein. We also discussed; Why all proteins aren’t created equal Gluconeogenesis Best diet for endurance athletes The body’s ability to utilize the protein it digests isn’t just about eating any protein, it’s about eating the right kind of protein. Protein is made up of smaller units called amino acids, and in order to get the full benefit of utilization, you have to remember that not all amino acids are created equal. One gram of protein in one food isn’t the same as a gram in another, and you have to be extremely discerning about the protein you choose, because it determines how your body recovers, and how the amino acids reassemble. If you’re an athlete, a bodybuilder this is incredibly important. Remember, casein, collagen, egg whites, and BCAAs are not good enough proteins to perform the necessary functions and you can never go wrong with whole eggs. Guest Bio- Dr. Minkoff is a 42-time full-Ironman triathlete, having qualified and competed at the Kona World Championships 8 times. In today's podcast episode, we unpack all things amino acids... "...Five months after beginning the amino acids, I achieved a personal best at Ironman Canada, in Penticton B.C. In my new and improved physical state, I began to wonder if my vegetarian, protein- deficient diet was the reason why the anti-cancer enzymes scorched my stomach. Could it be that the mucous lining in my stomach was inadequate, and that had also held back the healing of my hamstring? I very badly wanted to find out, so I decided to try the enzymes again. I followed the full protocol, twelve tablets, six times per day for three consecutive days. I had no adverse reactions, and my stomach was fine. I learned that because my overall body protein levels had normalized, the mucous layer in my stomach was better able to handle the enzymes. What a revelation! I thought, could this also be a key problem with my patients and their various conditions? " Thus begins the new book "The Search For The Perfect Protein", by 42 time Ironman triathlete Dr. David Minkoff. Dr. Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then completed both a Pediatric Residency and Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of California at San Diego. He worked at the University of California and Children's Hospitals in San Diego as an attending physician in infectious disease while conducting original research on Ribaviron, a broad spectrum anti-viral agent to fight disease. He also co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine. In 1995, his wife became ill, and her physicians couldn't find what was wrong. Not accepting their "no hope" conclusion, Dr. Minkoff went on a search to help her that led him out of emergency medicine into complementary and alternative medicine to find the answers. In the process he gained expertise in Biological medicine, heavy metal detoxification, anti-aging medicine, hormone replacement therapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, neural and prolotherapy, homeopathy and optimum nutrition. He studied under the masters in each of these disciplines until he became an expert in his own right. The answers he found were soon in demand when others learned of his wife’s return to good health. In response to this, he and his wife, Sue Minkoff RN established Lifeworks Wellness Center in 1997 and it quickly became one of the most comprehensive complementary and alternative medicine clinics in the U.S. The demand for the products and protocols he discovered became a catalyst for founding BodyHealth.Com, a nutrition company that now manufactures and distributes these cutting-edge solutions for the many health problems today. Dr. Minkoff writes two free online newsletters, “The Optimum Health Report” and ”The BodyHealth Fitness Newsletter”, to help others learn about optimum health and fitness. In my conversation with Dr. Minkoff, you'll learn... -Dr. Minkoff's history with amino acids and why he wrote his new book... The science behind amino acids and protein wasn't keeping up with the commercial PR and marketing Strained a hamstring while running an Ironman triathlon in 1982 Tried everything possible to no avail Tried amino acids and felt no pain, no discomfort Max heart rate rose by 12 bpm Muscle and bone tissue filled in A patient who was familiar with natural cancer treatment recommended a pancreatic enzyme treatment; had very negative results He then supplemented it with essential amino acids and was perfectly fine Saw potential cure for other problems patients may be having (that are not cancer) He realized that if it was effective for him, it would be beneficial for others He now sees amino acids as an essential element of a workout and proper recovery Vegans and vegetarians are notoriously deficient in aminos, B12, Iron and other nutrients Highly recommend an Amino supplement -About CHYMO, the thyroid and its interaction with amino acids... Chymotrypsin: an enzyme made in the pancreas that is necessary to digest food Actin: the main protein in muscle; Contains 5800 different amino acids in one chain of the muscle fiber Must be broken down into individual amino acids in order for the intestine to absorb it Vicious cycle: amino acids not enough to make chymotrypsin; can't digest protein properly; amino acids can't get into the bloodstream Many people are iodine deficient Also low in tyrosine (made from the essential amino acid phenylalanine) These are common issues -The link between amino acids/proteins and the gut and digestion... The inner lining of the intestine is one cell thick Leaky barrier membranes: your body gets exposed to foreign proteins 70-80% of your immune system is behind the membrane barrier (Peyer's patches, gut associated lymphoid tissue) Inner lining of the gut has a high turnover (every 3-5 days) due to the exposure, wear and tear, etc. Leakage occurs when these membranes are not replaced Lack of amino acids slows the turnover rate (10-12 days) Endurance training compromises the immune system due to the pounding on the body -How amino acids are used by riders in the Tour de France bike race... Podcast: w/ Dr. Jeff Spencer Dr. Spencer is a former Olympic biker who worked for the U.S. team during the Lance Armstrong era Minkoff gave Spencer amino acids to give to the riders during one of the races: After 21 days, athletes are broken down, even with optimal nutrition, medical care, etc. Athletes who used amino acids didn't break down; performance improved Athletes and coaches overwork and don't allow adequate recovery time; results in a broken immune system -Why not derive amino acids from whey protein, spirulina and other sources?... The amount of protein listed on the package doesn't translate to amounts in other sources (fish, steak, spirulina, etc.) Medication to stop stomach acid stops protein digestion Pepsin enzyme which digests protein requires a very acid stomach Cells have two pathways with which to deal with the amino acids: Anabolic: Turns amino acids into the proteins the cell is responsible for (hair, liver, muscle etc.) Catabolic: Nitrogen becomes a waste product; chain leftover looks like a carbohydrate Ratio of essential amino acids in Kion Aminos is very specific; the body will use amino acids into making protein Spirulina is good for some things; amino acids is not one of them Adding non-essential amino acids decreases the efficacy of the product Collagen has 50% non-essential amino acids -The chemical configurations of amino acids... The body can only use the "left-handed" configuration (L form) Most amino acid forms have very low amino acid utilization because they include the R form -How amino acids work with fasting and/or ketosis... You can take amino acids and not spike blood glucose levels Excessive proteins will kick you out of fasting is a myth Amino acids work very well for fasting in an anabolic state 10 g of amino acids is 4 calories (less than a stick of gum) -How safe amino acids are for children... -And much more... Dr. Darold Treffert is a psychiatrist and the world's leading expert on savants, genius, and autism. He has an unparalleled commitment to children and learning and a deep understanding of what makes us human beyond the Homo sapiens brain. Today he shares the beauty of early intervention, some incredible stories, and insights to allow us to look differently at life. "It is just an amazing difference early intervention makes. I think we'll see the payoff of that eventually in terms of preventing some of the impairments that go with autism." - Dr. Darold Treffert Three Things We Learned Making early intervention possible Dr. Treffert started a center to offset a growing list of children who needed intervention and were forced to wait for nine to twelve months to be accommodated. The effort didn't aim to merely expand. They took on the role of teaching educators and therapists to affect change in a system thwarting progress for early intervention programs. The earlier, the better According to Dr. Treffert, diagnosis of learning differences is best done for children around the age of two. Many areas offer free intervention programs for parents who wish to have their children evaluated. But the difference in the progress of children subjected to early interventions and those made to wait is striking. The Treffert Approach Dr. Treffert and his team have come up with a five to six-step process that they impart to therapists and educators in an effort to optimize the intervention programs for children with autism. Making the right differential diagnosis leaves the door ajar for other possibilities involving a child. A multidisciplinary approach is also tantamount to ensuring that all areas of a child's development are properly examined. There's a plethora of approaches for intervention. But the process must involve not only professionals and parents who know their children better. Integrating them in early intervention programs can make all the difference in a child's progress towards realizing their hidden potentials. Hear Dr. Sam Harrington as we discuss his book, At Peace: Choosing a Good Death After a Long Life. Does dying in the hospital hooked up to tubes scare you? What about your parents? How do you have the conversation? When do you decide that a caring choice is the decision to avoid repeated hospitalizations and over testing? You have choices you might not think you have. There are some things that will directly lead you down the path of hospitalization and then death. My guest, Dr. Samuel Harrington is an honors graduate of Harvard College and the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology for more than 30 years in Washington, D.C. There he served on the board of trustees of Sibley Memorial Hospital, a member of the Johns Hopkins Health System, and the former Hospice Care of DC. As the American health care system evolved around him, becoming increasingly complex and increasingly commercialized, Sam became interested in end-of-life issues. We are going to talk about all these things and his book, At Peace, Choosing a Good Death After a Long Life.
The human brain is a treasure trove for mysteries that continue to elude our understanding. When we hack the mind of the leading geniuses in the world, do we come close to answering our own questions? Today, psychologist extraordinaire Dr. Darold Treffert shares with us half a century's worth of brain pickings on geniuses, savants, autism, and the human potential. “If people with this much inability can have this kind of ability, what does that mean about the ability within us all?” - Dr. Darold Treffert Three Things We Learned Savants display a juxtaposition of disability and superior ability Dr. Treffert refers to savant syndrome as a rare and extraordinary condition where someone with an underlying disability has some island of genius that stands in stark contrast to overall handicap. This disconnect is so jarring that the exceptional ability immediately captures the attention of any observer. He fondly recalls encounters with an autistic child who could tell which street corner a Milwaukee bus was passing at any given time of the day and a kid who could tell him what happened in history on a given date at a time of the encyclopedia. There's exceptional ability within us all In order to understand our own potentials, the trick is to know how to tap our deeply-buried abilities without having some kind of brain injury or disease. These abilities lie dormant within every human mind. It's a challenge we all must take to seek it and make it bloom to become what it can be. “Our job in trying to deal with a child with autism is to find that island of intactness, celebrate it, love it, congratulate it, nurture it, and let it come to its full human potential, and that's what I see happening in savants that I followed in many years.” - Dr. Darold Treffert Acquired savants exist When a person suffers from an injury or condition that induces brain trauma, they can develop abilities that they have never exhibited before. It can be a sudden inclination towards music or art, even mechanical abilities. These cases corroborate the claim that the human mind may be an unsolvable labyrinth. Comprehending the workings of the complicated circuitry that is the human mind is as much a travail as learning the functions of the thousand neurons that make up the connections. It's fascinating how the human mind can be considered a separate entity from the anatomical part that is the brain. In this context, our minds, indeed, may be a dimension unconquerable by the human ability. How do we give our carees (and ourselves) peace at end of life? Dr. Samuel Harrington, author of a new book, At Peace: Choosing a Good Death After a Long Life, joins us to guide us toward a peaceful end. Most people say they would like to die quietly at home. But overly aggressive medical advice, coupled with an unrealistic sense of invincibility, results in the majority of elderly patients misguidedly dying in institutions while undergoing painful procedures, instead of having a better and more peaceful death they desired. AT PEACE outlines specific active and passive steps that older patients and their health care proxies can take to insure loved ones pass their last days comfortably at home and/or in hospice, when further aggressive care is inappropriate. Through Dr. Harrington's own experience with his parents and patients, he describes the terminal patterns of the six most common chronic diseases; how to recognize a terminal diagnosis even when the doctor is not clear about it; how to have the hard conversation about end-of-life wishes; how to minimize painful treatments and when to seek hospice care. The current estimated U.S. senior population 65 and older is well over fifty million strong. AT PEACE is a relevant and necessary resource for families across the board. Samuel Harrington, MD, a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Wisconsin Medical School, concentrated his practice at Sibley Memorial Hospital. His work as Sibley's patient safety officer representative to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Trustees and his service on the board of a nonprofit hospice in Washington D.C. informed his passion for helping aged patients make appropriate end-of-life decisions. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/caring-conversations/message

It's no secret that the current condition of our toxic world makes it challenging to build sustainable health and avoid disease. This is also largely due to the fact that our soil and plants don't contain the same nutritional potency they once did. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE Even with a clean diet and healthy lifestyle, many people are still subjected to an extreme amount of toxic build-up. Much of the problem stems from unhealthy soils, polluted waters, and foods that have lost so much of their nutrient density. The time has come to ask ourselves a very important question: How can we create sustainable health while being faced with unsustainable environmental and agricultural condition? On this episode of Wellness Force Radio, we explore this topic with Dr. David Minkoff, founder of Body Health. He shows us the tools and strategies we need to maintain optimum health in today's increasingly toxic world. Detoxification Should Be A Lifestyle In recent decades, the occasional 1 week or 30-day detox plan may have been sufficient for cellular cleanup. However, the increasing amount of toxins we are now exposed to calls for a more continuous approach. If we want to remove this waste from our bodies and build better wellness, detoxing has to be viewed as a lifestyle. To cleanse these excess toxins that lead to unwanted health effects, we now must aid the body in their removal. This can be achieved in a few ways like making sure we sweat outside or in the sauna, adding detoxifying foods into our diets, and using proper supplementation. Listen To Episode 121 As Dr. Minkoff Uncovers: How to build sustainable health given the poor conditions of the environment. What may be causing such a massive increase in autism and childhood cancer. The dangerous effects of heavy metal toxicity. Ways to avoid excess toxins and remove them from the body. How to remedy an amino acid deficiency. The pervasive issues that stem from poor gut health. Why detoxing should be an ongoing part of our diet and lifestyle. Why women should detox before pregnancy. How to maintain healthy levels of testosterone. How the body prioritizes the use of nutrients. Ways we can address a protein deficiency in the body. How we can influence our genetic expression through lifestyle. Why having a strong and clear life purpose can help us build sustainable health. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Detoxification needs be a continuous part of our lifestyle. The current state of our environment and agricultural system are so polluted, that we have to take consistent actions to aid or bodies in the removal of toxins. It's important to make sure we consume adequate amounts of the essential amino acids, as well as provide our body what it needs to properly produce the non-essential. We have to figure out the health needs for our individual bodies and adjust our diet and lifestyle accordingly. Power Quotes From Dr. Minkoff "Use safe storage materials so unwanted toxins won't enter your food." - Dr. David Minkoff "The increasing amount of toxins we are now exposed to calls for a more continuous approach for detoxing our bodies." - Dr. David Minkoff "People have to be more intelligent about how we treat our bodies if our species is to survive and thrive." - Dr. David Minkoff "We have to figure out our individual health abnormalities, then adjust our lifestyle and nutrition to meet those needs." - Dr. David Minkoff "It's really important to eat well, exercise, and have a strong life purpose to help other people." - Dr. David Minkoff "We have to take extra precautions to build sustainable health in such a toxic world." - Dr. David Minkoff About Dr. Minkoff Dr. David Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. Few people would or should want to learn to recite Pi to 22,514 decimal places, draw landmarks in breathtaking detail, or remember the contents of 12,000 books. Everyone is different. By refusing to gawp at these feats, preferring instead to focus on the person behind them, Dr Treffert sends out the message that it is the creative, imaginative processes at the root of such abilities that matter most. Only by considering the context of savants’ lives can we more fully and properly understand the gifts that they possess. Dr. Darold Treffert received his medical degree and psychiatric residency training at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. His first position was setting up a Children’s Unit at Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Winnebago, Wisconsin. That is where he met his first savant in 1962. He was a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Department of Psychiatry for many years. He has written extensively in the professional literature on the rights of the mentally ill, stress management (under the title of Rustproofing People or Mellowing), autism and savant syndrome. In 2016 Agnesian HealthCare, St. Agnes Hospital, established the Treffert Center to preserve and expand Dr. Treffert’s work with savant syndrome and other forms of exceptional brain performance. It's no secret that the current condition of our toxic world makes it challenging to build sustainable health and avoid disease. This is also largely due to the fact that our soil and plants don't contain the same nutritional potency they once did. JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST Even with a clean diet and healthy lifestyle, many people are still subjected to an extreme amount of toxic build-up. In our ongoing aspiration to be in cavorting cahoots with Creation, to supplant the toxic mimic of culture based on dominance (that we die to, lest we all die from), with an emergent culture of dynamic conscious kinship, Caroline is joined this week by Bruce Lipton, phd. Dr. Lipton is a cell biologist who has taught at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, and later performed pioneering studies at Stanford. A renegade by nature, he is liberating us from gene determinism (Darwin and Newton etc.) and inviting us to once again assume imaginative responsibility (on a cellular level) for dreaming a more desirable personal and community world into being.
