Samma sak händer i ”Gravitationens regnbåge”.

Meet Alan Arkin, a sly comic actor who turned his fine eye for characters into a legendary career that spanned 50 years and won him many awards, including an Oscar at age 72 for Little Miss Sunshine. From his beginnings as a folk singer, to a stint with the Second City Improv troupe, to an iconic role in Catch-22, to late-in-life triumphs on the big and small screens, Arkin always imbued his supporting characters with first-rate humanity. As always, find more clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Alan Arkin? Shadow Warrior by Rajeev Srinivasan
Ep. 44: AUKUS is a bad pact: poor optics, retreat from Quad, nuclear proliferation

A version of this essay was published by Chintan at https://chintan.indiafoundation.in/articles/poor-optics-retreat-from-the-quad-and-proliferation-make-aukus-a-bad-pact/The AUKUS strategic alliance among Australia, the US and the UK was an unexpected bombshell. Among the unpleasantly surprised were India and Japan, partners of the US and Australia in the Quad quasi-alliance. France (and the rest of the European Union) were also upset. (France also had a reasonable commercial peeve: its diesel-submarine order worth $40 billion with Australia was cancelled without notice).AUKUS has been spun by American and especially British commentators as a wonderful new initiative to contain China, this time with some military might. Meanwhile China continues to rampage in the South China Sea and the East China Sea, and threatens to capture the continental shelves of nations like Indonesia and Vietnam via ‘research’ ships. However, there are serious concerns, especially from the point of view of India, which obviously has its own military issues relating to China, based on the latter’s nibbling away at the Indo-Tibetan Himalayan border, leading of course to June clashes in Galwan. Reports about a huge build up of infrastructure and war materiel in Tibet, incursions deep into Indian territory, and the setting up of villages inside Bhutan point to a ‘salami slicing’ approach. In the context of the looming Chinese threat to the prevailing international order, it is only natural that the US should take steps to preserve its primacy. Thus the Quad, which was first mooted by Prime Minister Abe of Japan: a coalition of democracies in the Indo-Pacific, with a common interest in containing a rampaging China, and the muscle to enforce their will. They will never say “contain China”, but that’s the intent.Former US President Obama allegedly made a “pivot to Asia”, but it was on his watch that China captured the South China Sea, suffering no consequences therefrom. Former US President Trump at least made noises about decoupling from China and attempted to bring in a consensus about lakshmana rekhas around China. In this context, three things current US President Biden has done appear to be counter-productive: one, the humiliating exit from Afghanistan; two, the AUKUS announcement, and three, the acceptance of Chinese hostage-taking tactics in the case of the CFO of Huawei. All three instances created doubts about American credibility, dependability, and will/ability to stand up for its partners. In the aftermath of the withdrawal from Kabul and the announcement about AUKUS, China has redoubled its intimidation of Taiwan; it will likely do the same to Japan re the Senkakus; and generally do the same all over Asia.It is true that the US needed to exit Afghanistan, but surely not like this. The headlong retreat implied that America’s friendship is hostage to expediency, and can be withdrawn any moment based on domestic compulsions. Henry Kissinger’s quip that “it is dangerous to be America's enemy, but fatal to be its friend” leaps to mind.Similarly, maybe the US needed to bring Australia under its wing, but surely not like this. By sneaking the AUKUS announcement in a few days before the Quad summit, Biden deemed the Quad a lame duck. All the flowery language in the Quad declaration couldn’t conceal the fact that it had been downgraded. That the two non-white members of the Quad, India and Japan, were kept in the dark about AUKUS suggests certain agendas. Besides, AUKUS does not seem to have troubled the Chinese very much: that, in and of itself, is ominous. The Chinese, as part of their ‘wolf-warrior’ diplomacy, habitually fly into a rage at the slightest of provocations: this is an intimidation tactic. But the official Chinese reaction to the AUKUS announcement was muted. Here’s what they said: “extremely irresponsible” and “seriously undermines regional peace and intensifies the arms race.” Even the excitable Global Times only said, “Washington is losing its mind by trying to rally its allies against China”, “The US intends to turn the Quad and AUKUS into ‘sinister gangs’ containing China,” and “[we] warn solemnly Japan, India and Australia not to follow the US too far in confronting China. Once they step on the red line of China’s core interests, China will not care about their relations with the US, and China will not hesitate to punish them.” That is very restrained by Chinese standards: the only conclusion we can draw is that they agree with Napoleon’s epigram: “Never interrupt the enemy when he’s making a mistake“. They think AUKUS is a win for them. The Chinese are probably right. Despite the spin doctoring, this marks a historic retreat by America. The Biden team are laboring under an atavistic Atlanticist illusion of a white Anglophone alliance to dominate the world. Those days are long gone. The UK in particular is on a downward spiral after Brexit, and may soon be shorn of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. If the US wanted to proliferate nuclear submarine propulsion technology to Australia, they could have done so. Why choose an intermediary like the UK that doesn’t add value? I am reminded of the classic scene from Catch-22, where Yossarian wonders why the comatose patient needs to be an intermediary between the drip feed bag and the waste removal bag. Why not just connect the two?, he asks. That also brings up the nuclear question. Why is the US proliferating nuclear technology to Australia, a non-nuclear power and a fierce NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) adherent which refused to sell uranium to India citing the NPT? Maybe I am missing something, but doesn’t this US act eviscerate the NPT? If India were to transfer nuclear tech to Taiwan, would everybody be so quiet? Of course not: there are serious double standards in play. Besides, Australia is pretty far away from China, and in any case the first submarines under the AUKUS deal will not (according to plan) appear till the 2040s. Too little, too late. The spurned parties, France, Japan and India, should perhaps form a triad. France has nuclear propulsion technology; surely it can do a technology transfer to India (forget the NPT); and France has a lot of interests in the Indo-Pacific, far more than the UK. On the whole, AUKUS seems like a very bad deal, despite the PR storm that shows it in a good light.1030 words, 4 Oct 2021 This is a public episode. Easily the funniest book I've ever read!'Catch-22' by Joseph Heller is fictional novel set on a US air force base on an island off Northern Italy during WWII. It follows Yossarian whilst he tries to avoid flying missions as everyone is out to kill him. He is joined by a collection of other wacky characters as they all show their peculiar idiosyncrasies. The book highlights the absurdity of army politics, the waste that is generated by bureaucracy and the mundanity of war (with brief flashes of intensity).I summarised the book as follows. "To say this is funny is an understatement. It is absolutely hilarious although it does contain disturbing/gory scenes, as it is after all about war. Catch-22 has become mainstay of the English language due to the absolute perfection of Heller in creating situation of paradox that can't be resolved. Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

The world has change much since a Tuesday evening long ago. I was asked the first of many, may odd questions to which I did not then know the answer. The world was… different then. Much different than it is today. You see, even on that day I knew that one of my rights was that of “Freedom of Speech.” today, I no longer believe that I have that right as it is enshrined in the Constitution. In this “Cancel Culture” world, simply stating an opinion about an objective scientific fact can get one erased. In the words of Joseph Heller’s Yossarian, “Disappeared.” From Facebook to Twitter to the airwaves, there is no longer freedom to speak your mind. Scilence has become golden…

Całkiem słuszna interpretacja fragmentu powieści Paragraf 22 – raz dwa – raz, dwa dźwięki Kiedy okres kwarantanny dobiegł końca Yossarian, twierdzący, że widzi wszystko podwójnie, zrobił to co zrobili inni: ustalił jakiś punkt widzenia. Raz a dobrze. Raz, a podwójnie. Taaak. Nasze bezpieczne kąty wołają nas bardzo wyraźnie, obiecują spokój ciała i głowy, chociaż to kłamstwo. Wierutne. A ja? A ty? – A teraz ile palców widzicie? – spytał doktor wyciągając dwa palce. – Dwa – odpowiedział Yossarian. – A teraz? – spytał doktor nie pokazując ani jednego palca. – Dwa – odpowiedział Yossarian. Twarz lekarza rozjaśnił uśmiech. – Na Jowisza, on ma rację – oświadczył tryumfalnie – on rzeczywiście widzi wszystko podwójnie. wybór fragmentu - jozefk.pl

Just when Ol’ Matty thinks he’s got it made, escaping the island, making a new best friend, headed to a new island of wine and people, he start to suspect a strange truth when he is drafted into World War II. Ol’ Matty and his new-new best friend Yo-Yo navigate the perils of the war and, worse, Joseph Heller’s ultimate paradoxical tragedy Catch-22. Thrilling dogfights, tomatoes and potato peelers bloodily fly with Ol’ Matty through the bullet drenched sky as Ol’ Matty comes to learn Joseph Heller’s ultimate truth and confirms his initial suspicion: People are trash, and that may just make life worth living. Damn you, you beautiful Catch-22.EPISODE NOTES:A contradiction from beginning to end, when Catch-22 was published in 1961, to a harsh contemporaneous reception and no awards, and then became a best-selling classic, renowned as a masterpiece of the 20th century. Yet Joseph Heller, former WW2 Bombardier and one of the greatest satirists of literature, still found a way to be bitter. Now, everyone’s other favourite contradiction, so he tells me, Ol’ Matty tries to eat the legendary catch. It’s not a fish.Ol’ Matty has escaped the tropical Tartarus that was his island, filled with malevolent tribes with lasers and laserdiscs, boars as paddlepop sticks and Jim Pawsby doing a wicked sick unicycle flip off the volcano into the unknown. Perhaps that’s the last we’ll see of him. Hopefully. How Ol’ Matty thinks that bear would make an interesting and enduring series nemesis is anybody’s guess, but I won’t bother. He is, as he tells me, a “Stupid genius”.Ol’ Matty’s salvation came in the form of Major ____ de Coverley, recruiting our inept intrepid hero for his skill (?) of turning literature into sandwiches. What Ol’ Matty thought was a free ride to the vineyard island Pianosa was a cunning ruse (not that cunning) and he was immediately drafted as a bombardier, meeting his newest best friend Yo-Yo. Together, they read through The Match by Colson Whitehead, a hard-hitting short story rife with tragic contradictions, graduate bombardier academy and fly head first into the dog fights of World War 2. Ol’ Matty was having too much fun.The dogfight in the skies, already a questionable expression, becomes all the more confusing with the addition of more assorted animals, enemies and mischief. I’m pretty sure I heard a nuke somewhere in the mix. He couldn’t just have a simple little World War, could he? No one questioned Ol’ Matty’s paws at the joystick, however, so small victories. But then the Colonel wanted them to finish their mission count and get the hell off his base, so Ol’ Matty made the great sacrifice for friendship and pulled some strings to keep them in the war. Friends will be friends. Yo-Yo was…displeased, and before long, so was the entire airbase. Help the war effort, Ol’ Matty, and leave. Please. All the same, Ol’ Matty has created a scrumptious enigma of a delicious word sandwich, an edible contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction, with all the brutality, perseverance, wit and cynicism of Joseph Heller’s story, along with all the beauty, humanity, tenderness and poetry of that very same story. I’m surprised he didn’t put a coin in there, or, better yet, a nickel. Do so at your own risk, Quixotes.Catch-22 is the satirical war novel by American author Joseph Heller about WW2 bombadier Captain John Yossarian, the perfect audience surrogate being a deeply flawed anti-hero. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th US Army Air Squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, an island not nearly big enough to hold an airbase. Catch-22’s non-chronological structure may at first seem random, but it is, in fact, highly structured based on free association. Okay, I’m calling it there. Ol’ Matty really latched onto this tragic beacon of the paradox. It is not for everyone, Quixotes, but it is undoubtedly a masterpiece.Love stories? Love hearing about the tales of old with Ol' Matty but want to know them yourself? Want to join the Book Club Sandwich but don't have the time or desire to sit down and read? Well, you dolt, check out Audible, where you can drive to your destination and faraway lands all at once. P.S. Audible, please sponsor me.For more short stories like the one featured here, The Match by Colson Whitehead, see The New Yorker either online or subscribe to have the magazine delivered for those delectable morning reads. You sponsor me too, New Yorker.I have only ever read the book with my own eyeballs so I can't personally vouch for any version on Audible, however there is a highly lauded recording of Catch-22 narrated by Trevor White. That being said, I believe this is a book best read as all the unique characters can come to life in your head in your unique way.In terms of film adaptations, there’s the Stan Original mini-series directed and produced by George Clooney, which is I think the best and most faithful translation of a novel that is borderline unfilmable with Christopher Abbott as an impeccable Yossarian, and there’s the classic 1970 adaptation starring Alan Arkin as John Yossarian with Orson Welles as General Dreedle. All is swell when you watch Orson Welles.Until next time, my Quixotes!Ol' Matty's sources:https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/04/01/the-matchhttps://www.thespruceeats.com/veal-cutlets-prosciutto-sage-saltimbocca-alla-romana-2017913https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/catch22https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch-22https://www.notablebiographies.com/He-Ho/Heller-Joseph.html#bookreview, #bookworm, #bookish, #bibliophile,#booknerd, #booklover, #bookaddict, #literature, #readinglist, #read, #library, #reading, #author, #plot, #kindle, #stories, #books, #catch22Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, or EMAIL us on deliciouswordsandwichpodcast@gmail.comwww.thatsnotcanonproductions.com

Joseph Heller's satiric war novel got the Hollywood treatment in 1970. Although the movie looked good on paper, it was considered a failure upon its release. Opinions vary wildly on whether that reputation is deserved. Let us delve into the misadventures of Yossarian and the gang as we get whiplash moving from scenes of horny hijinks and madcap antics to existential horror and PTSD-fodder. World War II Movie Night's first entry that doesn't have a clear consensus.

Series PremiereCatch-22 (Hulu)Artful dodger Yossarian is a bombardier in the U.S. Air Force during World War II who is upset that thousands of people who he has never met are trying to kill him. His biggest problem isn't the enemy, though, it's his own army that keeps increasing the number of missions soldiers must fly in order to complete their service. And if Yossarian tries to make an attempt to avoid his assignments, he will be in violation of catch-22, a bureaucratic rule that states a man is considered insane if he willing continues to fly dangerous missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and makes him ineligible to be relieved of his duty. Oscar winner George Clooney serves as an executive producer of the six-episode series, which is based on the 1961 novel by Joseph Heller. Season FinalesYoung Sheldon (CBS)It's 1989 and 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper has skipped four grades to start high school along with his less-intellectual older brother. As he struggles to be understood by his family, classmates and neighbours, his mother arms him with the best tool she can come up with: reminding bullies his dad is the football coach and his brother is on the team. His twin sister doesn't share his exceptional mind, but she has a much clearer vision of what life has in store for the young genius. Jim Parsons, who plays the adult version of Sheldon on "The Big Bang Theory," narrates.Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)The medical drama series focuses on a group of young doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, who began their careers at the facility as interns. One of the young doctors and the show's namesake, Meredith Grey, is the daughter of a famous surgeon. Grey struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues, particularly the hospital's one-time chief of surgery, Richard Webber, due to a pre-existing relationship between them - Webber and Meredith's mother had a personal relationship when Meredith was young.Better Things (FX)`Better Things' is the story of Sam Fox, a single mother and working actor with no filter trying to raise her three daughters -- Max, Frankie, and Duke -- in Los Angeles. She also looks out for her mother, Phil, an English ex-patriate with questionable faculties who lives across the street. Whether she's struggling to keep her daughters close or trying to push one of them out of the nest, Sam approaches every challenge with fierce love, raw honesty, and humour. At the end of the day, Sam's just trying to earn a living, navigate her daughters' changing lives, survive her family, have fun with a friend or two, and also -- just maybe -- squeeze in some private time.Barry (HBO)Disillusioned at the thought of taking down another "mark," depressed, low-level hit man Barry Berkman seeks a way out. When the Midwesterner reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an actor who is bedding a mobster's wife, little does Barry know that the City of Angels may be his sanctuary. He follows his target into acting class and ends up instantly drawn to the community of eager hopefuls, especially dedicated student Sally, who becomes the object of his affection. While Barry wants to start a new life as an actor, his handler, Fuches, has other ideas, and the hit man's criminal past won't let him walk away so easily. The Blacklist (NBC)For decades, ex-government agent Raymond "Red" Reddington has been one of the globe's most wanted fugitives. But then he agreed to work with the FBI to catch his "blacklist" of mobsters, spies and international terrorists -- on the condition that he must work with profiler Elizabeth Keen. Red's true intentions -- choosing Liz, a woman with whom he seemingly has no connection -- are unclear. Does Liz have secrets of her own? Red promises to teach Liz to think like a criminal "to see the bigger picture," whether she wants to or not.black-ish (ABC)Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) has it all - a great job, beautiful wife Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), four kids and a big home in a classy neighbourhood - but as a black man, he begins to question whether all his success has brought too much cultural assimilation for his family. With the help of his father (special guest star Laurence Fishburne), Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honour their background while preparing them to embrace the future. The Good Fight (CBS All Access)The CBS All Access series picks up one year after the events in the final episode of "The Good Wife." After a financial scam destroys the reputation of young lawyer Maia Rindell and wipes out her mentor and godmother Diane Lockhart's savings, the two are forced out of Lockhart & Lee and join forces with Lucca Quinn at one of Chicago's pre-eminent law firms. At Reddick, Boseman & Kolstad, Diane finds familiar faces, including Colin Morrello, who is a rising star in the state's attorney's office, and Marissa Gold. Though starting at the bottom, Diane and Maia are determined to rebuild their careers and lives at the new firm. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Joseph Heller, author of Catch-22 and its sequel, Closing Time, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded in San Francisco on October 17, 1994. Since its original publication in 1961, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller has become a classic of anti-war literature, gaining fame during the Vietnam era for its dark and satirical look at American military life. Filmed to middling results by Mike Nichols in 1970, a new miniseries on Hulu has brought the novel back into the spotlight, where its focus on circular reasoning and insanity seems a propos to life during the current American regime. Catch-22 was Joseph Heller's first novel. In the 1970s he wrote the novels Something Happened and Good as Gold, and in the 1980s God Knows and Picture This, and the non-fiction No Laughing Matter about his struggle with Guillan-Barre Syndrome In 1994, Joseph Heller came out with a sequel to Catch-22, titled Closing Time, which deals with what happened to Yossarian and other characters after the end of World War II. This interview was recorded during that book tour and deals with both books, as well as other aspects of his career, along with comparisons to the works of Kurt Vonnegut. Despite respectful reviews and a good reputation, Closing Time is mostly forgotten today, though it is easily available on-line in both paper and e-book. Joseph Heller published a memoir, Now and Then, in 1998, and another novel, Portrait of the Artist as an Old Man, an autobiographical work about an author who is unable to shake the success of his very first novel, was published posthumously in 2000. The film of Catch-22 is available streaming thru Amazon Prime subscription; and the mini-series is available streaming on Hulu.   The post From the Archive: Joseph Heller (1923-1999) appeared first on KPFA.

Luke Davies is a poet, novelist and screenwriter, known for ‘Lion,’ ‘Candy,' 'Life,' 'Beautiful Boy,' and now 'Catch-22.' His books have won many awards, including the inaugural Prime Minister's Literary Award for Poetry for his volume Interferon Psalms, and the Age Book of the Year prize for his volume Totem. A fan of 'Catch-22' from an early age, it was Davies’ original idea to turn the story into a series. Finding a way through the craziness of the novel was the first challenge. Joseph Heller’s story takes place during World War II, specifically from 1942 to 1944. It follows the life of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th Squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea, west of Italy. The novel looks into the experiences of Yossarian and the other airmen in the camp, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home. In this exclusive interview, Davies discusses removing the clutter to adapt the story for Hulu, writing emotional beats for actors, the psychology of character, taking the audience on an emotional journey, why your treatments should be engaging, and the equal importance of discipline and rest as a writer. If you haven’t seen 'Catch-22,' there are some potential spoilers in this interview. There’s also a print version of this interview on Creative Screenwriting’s website. There are no new episodes of Broken Window Garden this month, but I will post a few old shows from precursor projects. This was a Yossarian Feedback show that was done completely acoustic, trying to set up actual performers as if they were samplers. It involved me giving people specific reading material, prompts for improvisation, and then running around the room, tapping people on the shoulder and trying to manipulate the dynamics of the room. There are plans to execute some Broken Window Garden shows like this.

Greetings wayward travelers, I am Wulf, Son of Wulf, Son of the Wilderness, your mysterious narrator for yet another Dungeons and Dragons Podcast, this one known as Moat House Gold, an enthralling tale of three adventures soon to be named. In this first installment of Moat House Gold our players Braden, Yossarian, and Anson will be creating their characters under the direction of their ever diligent Dungeon Master, Colin. If you find an uncommon camaraderie between our players and Dungeon Master it is due to their long friendship forged in the dank and damp basements of their parents’ houses honing their abilities together in the creative arts since the age of twelve. For most of us who like me, Wulf, Son of Wulf, Son of the Wilderness, were raised by the wilderness focusing one's talents on tracking and communing with nature itself, it seems odd to spinned such a vast amount of time on a silly insignificant game, but if these four bards are able to entertain you with their extempore stories for just twice a month then it was all worth them ostracizing themselves from their virile peers. I will hold you no longer from the excitement that awaits you but know that I will return before every tale to remind you of the prior events that befell are adventurers, so be careful how you address me, for Wulf, Son of Wulf, Son of the Wilderness lurks among every shadow.

Yossarian Slept Here: When Joseph Heller Was Dad, the Apthorp Was Home and Life Was a Catch-22 Erica Heller, a former advertising copywriter, is a published novelist, memoirist and journalist. Her father was the author Joseph Heller, who wrote Catch-22, among other books, so she grew up with a healthy dose of irony and black humor. Appropriately, she lives in New York City. Her book, Yossarian Slept Here, When Joseph Heller Was Dad, the Apthorp Was Home, and Life was a Catch-22, was recently published by Simon & Schuster. Oh, and as a special bonus, we are given, in the final pages of the book, Ms. Heller's grandmother's secret recipe for pot roast, which is very much appreciated, and which her then-divorced father once offered her $10,000 to reveal to him. That she chose to withhold the recipe from him out of loyalty to her mother says much about Ms. Heller

They talk about why they enlisted and give their perspective on Bradley Manning, US foreign policy and the current political climate. They are also both contributing writers for Media Roots. Check out their op-ed writings in the Soldier's Corner of the site. If you would like to directly download the podcast click the down arrow icon on the right of the soundcloud display.
