As word spread of the British march to Lexington and Concord,  communities from all over Massachusetts and greater New England responded.  Historian Alan Foulds tells us about the Lynn End (now Lynnfield) militia, who were warned by medical student Martin Herrick, and their march to Menotomy, where they fought the British at the Jason Russell House.  The Lynnfield Historical Society has told these stories in a series of videos, and will re-enact these events, and will put on a play, "Shadows of 1775," in which the men and women in the town of 1775 will tell their stories to their townsfolk and visitors today.  Tell us what you think! The season one finale of the WPBSA Snooker Podcast is upon us and today we revisit the story of the 1987 World Championship which saw Steve Davis regain the title for the first time in three years to reaffirm his position as the number one player of the era. He says they're proposing an apprenticeship model - bringing people with the right attributes into the workforce and giving them on the paid job training. On a bitterly cold morning on the 27th January 1937, police officers had been alerted to an incident that had taken place high upon the bleak moorland that overlooked the town of Burnley in the North West of England. Quickly making their way to the scene, upon arrival they would be horrified at what they encountered as lying outside on the ground was the body of 73 year old William Pickup. Roughly five yards away lay the body of 18 year old Jane Ellen Wilkinson. Both had been shot, suffering horrific injuries to their bodies. But this wasn't to be the end as, not too far away, the body of 30 year old, Joseph Scriven would shortly be discovered lying in a shippon close to the farm house. He too had been shot. The events that took place that morning would shock not only the residents of Worsthorne but that of entire county, and with it placing the village under a dark haze for many, many years. Locals would ask how could a tragedy as shocking as this possibly occur on their very own doorsteps. Foulds Wilkinson was a farmer living at Saville Green Farm that was situated high up on the moors in the village of Worsthorne. A widower since 1929 after the death of his wife Martha, Fould's shared his farm with his daughter, Jane Ellen as well as his father-in-law, William Pickup. On the morning of Wednesday, 27th January 1937, he had left home at around half past eight to deliver milk to a local firm in nearby Burnley. He had left his daughter, Jane, to help with chores around the farm, along with her grandfather, William. Both were consumed by the work and seemed in good spirits as they carried out their usual duties around the farm. Inside the shippon, recently hired farm labourer, Joseph Scriven was also busy working hard. Foulds would be gone for around an hour, returning back at the farm at around half past nine. Passing down a long, but straight lane that exited off from Gorple Road, nothing could have prepared him from what he was about to encounter as, after parking up his van in the yard and making his exit, his attention was quickly diverted to seeing the body of a man lying on the ground. Not sure what to think, as he made his way over to where the body was lying, he soon came across another shocking discovery – the body of his young daughter was also lying on the ground, around five yards from where the body of William Pickup was laying. Without wanting to investigate further, he immediately jumped back into his van and drove to the Burnley Police station. The possession deficit proved too much for UVA to overcome as the Orange pull out the 13-11 win on the road, and improve to 6-4, locking up a better than .500 record and an NCAA tournament bid. Nakeie Montgomery and Michael Sowers put Duke on their backs and helped their team climb out of a 12-7 hole late in the 4th and then later win it in overtime. Another classic Thursday night ACC showdown for Duke. Hopkins gave Maryland all they could handle on Saturday, but the terps were able to pull off the 14-13 win thanks to big games from Jared Bernhardt and Logan Wisnauskas who both went for 4 goals with a dish in this game. Navy’s defense stifled Army’s big cat Brendan Nichtern holding him to zero points and just a couple of shots in their big 9-4 win over the Black Knights. Dylan Foulds stuck the game winner on Saturday for Penn State with just 1:08 remaining in the game and tore the hearts out of Ohio State that needed this game badly to make their case for an at large bid. Foulds finished the day with 4 goals, Mac O’Keefe put up 2 goals and a helper. UMBC beat Stony Brook in OT for the second time this season, dropping the Seawolves 14-13 in their second meeting, and snapping Stony Brook’s 6 game win streak. Whether it be workplace training, online learning, school curriculum, or children's educational television, to have an effective and enjoyable learning experience it is critical to develop it on a strong foundation of quality education research and beautiful design. In this episode we will discuss the interplay of research and design in creating quality learning programs. Sesame Street, the children's television program developed by media and education nonprofit Sesame Workshop, is a shining example of the power of quality research and design in educational programs. For over 50 years Sesame Street has brought critical early childhood education to over 150 countries, helping to prepare children for their first year in school as well as addressing critical social issues such as HIV, homelessness, death, and autism. Most viewers of the show possibly aren't aware that every aspect of Sesame Street is backed and supported by years of research driven by a longstanding partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education. To discuss how research and design work together to create such a successful educational program, I am joined by leaders from each of those domains at Sesame Workshop. Abstract: Comparing trees is a basic task for many purposes, and especially in phylogeny where different tree reconstruction tools may lead to different trees, likely representing contradictory evolutionary information. While a large variety of pairwise measures of similarity or dissimilarity have been developed for comparing trees with no information on internal nodes, very few measures have been designed for node labeled trees, which is for instance the case of reconciled gene trees. Recently, we proposed a formulation of the Labeled Robinson Foulds (LRF) edit distance with edge extensions, edge contractions between identically labeled nodes, and node label flips. However, this distance (the size of a most parsimonious path of such events transforming one node-labeled tree into the other) proved difficult to compute, in particular, because "good" edges, i.e. edges present in the two trees, may have to be contracted. Here, we report on a different formulation of the LRF edit distance --- based on node insertion, deletion, and label substitution --- comparing two node-labeled trees, which we show can be computed in linear time. The new formulation also maintains other desirable properties: being a metric, reducing to Robinson Foulds for unlabeled trees, and maintaining an intuitive interpretation. The new distance is computable for an arbitrary number of label types, thus making it useful for applications involving not only speciations and duplications, but also horizontal gene transfers and further events associated with the internal nodes of the tree. To illustrate the utility of the new distance, we use it to study the impact of taxon sampling on labeled gene tree inference and conclude that denser taxon sampling yields better trees. This week I interview an incredible veteran Dan Foulds. While Dan began his career in the Air Force in various capacities from loading bombs onto B-52 aircraft, to managing the Officer's Club at MacDill AFB, he made the transition to becoming a US Army Flight Warrant Officer. After his first assignment he was asked to join a newly forming unit at Hunter Army Airfield, in Savannah, Georgia, the 3rd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Airborne in 1989. Dan remained with the 160th SOAR until his retirement in 1998, serving as a Flight Lead and Instructor Pilot in the MH-47D aircraft. Dan deployed in January 1991 to Saudi Arabia and flew combat missions during Desert Storm into Iraq. In April 1996, he deployed with 3/160th SOAR to assist in the evacuation of noncombatants from the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, Liberia. The operation lasted just 10 days, during which the Night Stalkers assisted in evacuating more than 2,000 noncombatants with no losses to the regiment. After retiring from the Army, Dan flew EMS helicopters as a line pilot, training captain, aviation base manager, and travelling relief pilot for 17 years. Adam Foulds discusses his Man Booker shortlisted novel The Quickening Maze with James Naughtie and a group of readers. Set in the 1840s, The Quickening Maze tells the story of the poet John Clare, and his incarceration at High Beach Asylum in London's Epping Forest. Run by the charismatic and reformist Dr Matthew Allen, its principles include occupational and talking therapies. Based on real life events, amongst the patients is Septimus Tennyson, brother to the young poet Alfred Tennyson. The Tennysons suffered from the English affliction : depression, and Alfred moves to be near his brother, and enjoy the peace of the forest. In the programme Foulds describes how his discovery of Tennyson and Clare being at the asylum at the same time inspired the novel, and how the closed world of the asylum is a gift for a novelist. He grew up on the edges of the forest himself and spent his teenage years birdwatching there, before he discovered a love of poetry. This intensely lyrical novel draws on John Clare's love of nature, how the Enclosure laws of the time contributed to his alienation and the deterioration of his mental health after a lifetime's struggle with alcohol and critical neglect. Foulds shows us Nature's paradise outside the walls, and Clare's dreams of home, of redemption and escape. May's Bookclub choice : In the Country of Men by Hisham Matar.
