Dr. Berg’s Healthy Keto and Intermittent Fasting Podcast

All it takes is a small amount of oxidative stress to the eye's lens to develop a cataract. A healthy lens is composed of an organized protein called crystallin. When this tissue becomes damaged, it is not replaced. Glycation can damage the lens of the eye. It results from sugar connecting to a protein and then becoming stuck and unusable to the body. Steroids like Prednisone can also increase the risk of cataracts. Not all surgeries can eliminate cataracts, and they can come with complications. According to “The Cataract Cure” by Dr. Marios Kyriazis, there is a safe, effective remedy for cataracts. Carnosine is a unique compound that can penetrate the lens of the eye and help with cataracts. Carnosine is a potent antioxidant that can dissolve damaged proteins. It can also activate your own antioxidants. NAC (n-acetyl carnosine) eye drops are one of the best remedies for cataracts. In an experiment conducted at the Moscow Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases, scientists used NAC eyedrops at 1% concentration on rabbits. They found that NAC could reach the inner parts of the eye within 15 to 30 minutes. No side effects were reported during this experiment. The author concluded that NAC is a proposed eye treatment for eye disorders, including cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disorders, inflammation, and complications from diabetes. The same group of scientists who performed the rabbit studies also tested NAC on humans. They selected 49 volunteers with an average age of 65 who had established age-related cataracts. After 6 months, researchers found that:•41% of people presented a significant reduction of clouding in the lens•90% showed a gradual improvement in vision•89% showed up to a 100% improvement in sensitivity to glare NAC for cataracts must be used for at least 3 to 5 months. Antioxidants such as those found in onions, egg yolks, leafy greens, and grass-fed red meat can protect you against cataracts.Vitamin A is vital for eye health and can be found in cod liver oil and grass-fed liver. B vitamins, especially B2, B6, and folate, are also essential. BOOK LINK: https://www.amazon.com/Cataract-Cure-... Pushing The Limits
How We Age And How To Stop It With Dr Sandra Kaufmann

Pushing The Limits

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2024 81:47

This week I interview longevity queen, Dr Sandra Kaufmann the author of the Kaufmann Protocol and Aging Solutions. Dr Sandra is the head of department of Anesthesiology at  and just happens to be obsessed with longevity science. What started out as her own search to slow and reverse ageing turned into a comprehensive system that allows people to personalize their own regime to their particular set of problems or needs and goals. This ingenious system has revolutionized my approach and makes it so simple to construct a very personalized approach. There are innumerable things a person can read concerning aging, but at the most basic level, organisms age because their component cells age. We are all made of cells or cell products and as they falter, so do we. Because cell aging is multifactorial, the organization of these concepts is important. The Protocol organizes these various theories of cellular aging into seven categories or tenets. The information in this podcast discusses these concepts in the language of science. The following seven tenets encompass all of the presently known modes of cellular aging.  Based on this organizational scheme, Dr Kaufman then developed a strategy where aging is curtailed in every category.   The 7 Tenets are as follows: DNA alterations (telomere attrition, epigenetics) Mitochondrial failure Pathways (Sirtuins, AMP Kinase, mTOR) Quality control (DNA & Protein repair mechanisms and Autophagy) Immune and inflammatory systems Individual cell needs (Senescent, Stem cells) Waste management (Glycation, lipofuscin) Dr Kaufman explains her rating system for various longevity molecules and how to utilize these in your protocols. We also discuss many of the supplements and adjuvants that Dr Kaufmann recommends for each of these tenets and we look at other cutting edge regenerative modalities like Exosomes.  Stem cells are fantastic in terms of longevity, however there are limitations. Exogenous stem cells are currently not available in this country. Meanwhile, autologous stem cells are only as healthy as the person they which they come. Exosomes, on the other hand, constitute up to 80% of the benefits seen with stem cells and are available through Dr Kaufmann in the United States at least,  in addition to being less expensive. I highly recommend Dr Kaufman's books, these are major reference book that will serve those looking to optimise their health, performance and longevity. Turning to medicine, she received her medical Degree at the University of Maryland, and completed a residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. For the last five years she has been the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, a nationally recognized center of excellence. Most recently, she was recognized as "Best in Medicine" by the American Health Council. Her avid interest in the science of anti-aging began many years ago as an intense hobby. Utilizing her knowledge in cell biology, human pharmacology and physiology, this hobby has now become a main focus. The project represents years of non-clinical research leading to the first, ever, comprehensive theory of aging.   Personalised Health Optimisation Consulting with Lisa Tamati Lisa offers solution focused coaching sessions to help you find the right answers to your challenges. Dr. David P. Turner, a dedicated researcher at the Massey Cancer Center, is passionate about dogs and their well-being. Specializing in Cancer Prevention and Control research, Dr. Turner focuses on the adverse connections between advanced glycation end products (A.G.E.s) and human health. A.G.E.s, harmful oxidative compounds prevalent in processed and high-temperature-cooked foods, play a significant role in chronic diseases. In collaboration with his wife, Dr. Victoria Findlay, co-leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control research program, Dr. Turner co-founded the Anti-A.G.E. Foundation, a non-profit organization raising awareness about the health impact of processed foods. Driven by his extensive research on A.G.E.s' effects on human health, Dr. Turner shifted his focus to canine and feline companions. With the heavy consumption of processed foods by dogs and cats (by no choice of their own), which are often higher in A.G.E. content than human foods, he decided to investigate the potential harm these foods may cause to our pets' health and lifespan. There are a handful of strategies that you can engage that slow the phenomena of aging, i.e., slow or stop the development of skin thinning and development of wrinkles, deterioration of joint health, so-called hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis, reduction in hormonal status, loss of muscle, loss of bone density, etc. One issue that is rarely discussed is the process of glycation, i.e., glucose modification of proteins. Glycation is something you have enormous control over and thereby slow numerous phenomena of aging. You can reduce the likelihood, for instance, of developing cataracts, reduce the likelihood of thinning skin and age spots, reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, reduce potential for joint deterioration. It's also something you can measure and track. So, in this episode of Defiant Health, let's discuss how you can easily and effectively minimize the process of glycation and thereby take over this important aspect of aging. For BiotiQuest probiotics including Sugar Shift, go here.A 15% discount is available for Defiant Health podcast listeners by entering discount code UNDOC15 (case-sensitive) at checkout.*_________________________________________________________________________________Get your 15% Paleovalley discount on fermented grass-fed beef sticks, Bone Broth Collagen, low-carb snack bars and other high-quality organic foods here.* For 12% off every order of grass-fed and pasture-raised meats from Wild Pastures, go here.*Dr. Davis and his staff are financially compensated for promoting BiotiQuest and Paleovalley products.Support the showBooks: Super Gut: The 4-Week Plan to Reprogram Your Microbiome, Restore Health, and Lose Weight Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path Back to Health; revised & expanded ed

Let's talk about the best remedies for cataracts and how to help prevent cataracts naturally. Cataracts are a problem with the lens of the eye—the lens becomes opaque and is difficult to see through. Glycation is one of the top causes of cataracts. Glycation is a term to describe the combining of sugar with protein or sugar with fat. The more glycation occurs in a person's lenses, the more eye problems they could experience. Glycation could be why people with diabetes have a higher risk of cataracts and another reason why a low-sugar, low-carb diet is so important. Top causes of cataracts: • Glycation • Aging • Chronic use of steroids • Chronic stress • Alcohol • Smoking • Exposure to microwaves • Junk foods • Exposure to certain chemicals • Oxidation • High-sugar diets The best natural remedies for cataracts: 1. Intermittent fasting 2. Cruciferous vegetables 3. Egg yolks 4. Selenium 5. Vitamin C 6. Vitamin E 7. Zinc 8. NAC 9. Thiamine (vitamin B1) 10. Riboflavin (vitamin B2)

Today I'm going to share five vitamins that can help with the complications of diabetes. High blood glucose affects four main tissues, including: 1. The eyes 2. The arteries 3. The nervous system (including the brain) 4. The kidneys However, the damage to these tissues can lead to a myriad of health problems. Glycation is a combination of sugar and protein in the body, and it can lead to this dysfunction of tissues. An A1C score is basically a number that represents glycated hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) to help tell how bad someone's diabetes is. Glycation can also occur when someone consumes a combination of sugar or carbs and protein or fat. When glycation occurs, it can build up into advanced glycation end products (AGEs). With AGEs comes a lot of free radical damage, inflammation, and oxidative stress. The good news is that there are natural things that can inhibit glycation. Vitamins that inhibit glycation: 1. Benfotiamine 2. Vitamin C 3. Vitamin D 4. Vitamin E (tocotrienols complex without tocopherols) 5. Vitamin B6 Other natural glycation inhibitors: • Alpha lipoic acid • Green tea (EGCG) • Aged garlic • Bitter melon • Quercetin • Curcumin • Fasting • Exercise DATA: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19409... https://www.e-pan.org/journal/view.ph...

Erin Tjam was my guest a few weeks ago, and I invited her back to talk about skin aging, more specifically about glycation.Glycation is a concept you may not have heard of (I hadn't!).  Basically, collagen and elastin keep your skin firm and supple. But your skin can age faster when sugar molecules like glucose and fructose adhere to your skin's collagen and elastin proteins. And this can trigger more responses that can result in inflammation and signs of skin aging.Erin explains how the glycation process causes something called advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) to form in your skin. These AGEs can play a major role in skin aging, and over time, the end-products make collagen rigid, so your skin looks less firm.Eating a diet high in processed sugars can accelerate  glycation, which can also increase inflammation, resulting in dryness or discomfort of the skin. 9 Important Blood Tests to Order on Keto Don't guess, test! The more data you have, the more metrics you can analyze for progress and necessary tweaks. I am going to share with you 9 blood tests. Not only will I share them with you, but I will also explain what they mean and the optimal numbers to aim for. The first thing I want you to realize is that the reference ranges on your lab report is not the same as the healthy ranges you should aim for. Lab companies such as LabCorp, Quest and many others, are factoring in your countries entire population who have done these labs before. We live in a sick world of unhealthy people, so why would we aim to be the average of unhealthy people? Instead, I encourage you to aim for the functional reference range. Functional medicine lab ranges are usually much narrower than standard lab ranges. They are labeled “optimal lab values,” meaning anything outside of those optimal values can show patterns and markers that spot trends toward disease. When I give you the suggested reference ranges to hit with the following labs, these are functional medicine lab ranges. Your red blood cells carry oxygen to your tissues using a protein called Hemoglobin A. The higher your blood glucose, the more glucose sticks to the hemoglobin A1c protein. How glycated is your hemoglobin? Glycation is a spontaneous non-enzymatic reaction of free reducing sugars with free amino groups of proteins, DNA, and lipids that forms glycated residues. Sugar is sticky (think of cotton candy sticking to your fingers) and this sugar can gunk up your arteries and cells.  Our red blood cells keep a record of your behavior. The answer hides in your red blood cells – specifically, your hemoglobin. A1C measures average blood sugars by detecting the glucose stuck to the hemoglobin protein.  The higher A1C, the more glucose glycated your protein. Test your hemoglobin A1C to learn your average blood sugar. You can request this test from your doctor. There are also companies who have created A1C test kits to do at the comfort of your own home. A “normal” A1C level is below 5.7%, a level of 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and a level of 6.5% or more indicates diabetes. Within the 5.7% to 6.4% prediabetes range, the higher your A1C, the greater your risk is for developing type 2 diabetes. The functional medicine range of A1C is 5.2% or lower. C-Peptide. C-peptide is a substance that is created when the hormone insulin is produced and released into the body. The insulin C-peptide test measures the amount of this product in the blood. The pancreas makes insulin, but not directly. The beta cells in the pancreas first produce a protein called “proinsulin.” Each proinsulin breaks down to one molecule of insulin and one molecule of C–peptide. Both are released when blood sugar levels get high. The more your beta cells get stimulated for insulin production, the faster you gain weight and create inflammation. While moderate levels lower inflammation, even slightly higher levels have been linked to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and cancer. C-peptide can give you a good idea if you've been overworking your beta cells. The functional medicine range for C-peptide is 0.8 – 3.8 ng/mL. Levels below 0.6 ng/mL (0.2 nmol/L) are a sign of possible beta cell failure and type 1 diabetes. High C-peptide levels indicate that the body is producing too much insulin. Fasting Insulin. This is a great compliment to the C-peptide test. Testing your insulin can reveal hidden problems in the way your body controls your blood sugar, years before they escalate to more serious issues, such as diabetes. In many cases, your blood sugar levels might not change for 10+ years, meanwhile you are getting closer each day to developing diabetes. This is because insulin is working so hard to keep those sugar levels “normal”. After a period, insulin cannot keep up with the demand. At this point blood sugars start to rise, and a diagnosis of prediabetes or diabetes is made. A fasting insulin test allows you to see if you are insulin resistant or on the road to insulin resistance. The standard reference range for a fasting insulin is less than 25 uIU/mL. The functional medicine range for fasting insulin is 3 – 7 uIU/mL. 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (and hormone) the body needs to build and maintain strong bones. It helps absorb calcium in the gut, keeping calcium and phosphorus in balance to mineralize bones. Vitamin D also helps support immune balance. Most people are deficient in Vitamin D. Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency may include: -            Fatigue -            Not sleeping well -            Bone pain or achiness -            Depression or feelings of sadness -            Hair loss -            Muscle weakness -            Loss of appetite -            Getting sick more easily -            Pale skin  Is the solution to take Vitamin D supplements? Not really. I am not opposed to taking a fat-soluble complex supplement, but it isn't until you lower insulin that you'll be able to change your Vitamin D numbers for the better. High insulin levels block the production of Vitamin D! You can take all the vitamin D in the world, and get sunshine every day, but you will not optimize your vitamin D levels until insulin is optimized. The great news for you, this book will teach you how to do this. The standard reference range on your lab report is typically 30-80 ng/mL. The functional medicine range for Vitamin D is 60-80 ng/mL) Homocysteine. High homocysteine has been linked to many health problems including heart disease, dementia, and Alzheimer's. When homocysteine cannot be converted to other compounds, it builds up in the body and may cause damage. B vitamins play a very important role in this balance. The standard reference range for homocysteine is under 14.5 umol/L. The functional medicine range for homocysteine is 5 – 7 umol/L. High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein. An important marker of systemic inflammation. While this protein helps you fight infections, it is also a marker of low-grade inflammation and a predictor of your heart disease risk. People with higher hs-CRP values have a more elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and those with lower values have less risk. Standard reference range for hs-CRP is 0 – 3.0 mg/L. Functional medicine range for hs-CRP is 0.5 mg/L or under. Let's talk about lipids! The most common questions I get asked on social media is about cholesterol. Here are the markers I suggest you get done to assess if you are risk for heart disease. You will not see total cholesterol on here because this marker is close to meaningless. High Density Lipoprotein Count (HDL-C). HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is often referred to as the “good” cholesterol because it helps to remove the “bad” cholesterol from the body and is required for many vital processes within the body. Having high levels of HDL cholesterol has been shown to decrease your risk for heart disease. Cholesterol transported by HDL is known as “good” cholesterol because it is being removed from artery walls, which helps prevent, reduce, and even reverse hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and heart disease [2]. HDL also plays a role in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, improving cell and immune function, enhancing insulin sensivity, and may protect against neurodegenerative disorders [5, 6, 7]. The standard reference range for HDL for men is 35 – 65 mg/dl, for women is 35 – 80 mg/dl. The functional reference range for HDL for men and women is 60-90 mg/dl. Triglycerides. High levels of triglycerides can increase your risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic health conditions. Triglycerides can be stored in fat tissue, or can be used as energy. For example, the body can release stored fats into the bloodstream as fatty acids when you don't eat for a prolonged time. These fatty acids travel back to the liver, which transforms them into triglyceride-containing very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) that are returned into the blood. On the other hand, your body stores more triglycerides when you overeat or have an unhealthy diet, such as the good ol' standard American diet. The standard reference range for triglycerides is under 150 mg/dL. The functional medicine range for triglycerides is under 90 mg/dL. Triglycerides to HDL ratio (TG:HDL). Your Triglyceride/HDL ratio helps offer a lifelong metric for your health. TG:HDL is one of the criteria for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, which was briefly known as Reaven's syndrome, named after Gerald Reaven, MD, of Stanford University. He and his colleagues around the world pioneered much of the research on TG:HDL ratio that indicates cardiovascular risk. TG:HDL is a strong marker of lifestyle factors—Your TG:HDL ratio offers a way to see whether you have a metabolism that naturally has cardiac protection or whether you need to earn it. To calculate your TG:HDL ratio, you simply take your total triglycerides and divide this by your total HDL. The standard reference range for TG: HDL is below 3.5 The functional medicine range for TG: HDL is below 1.5. // R E S O U R C E S http://www.ketokampmachine.com Keto Mojo device, use code KETOKAMP Get your supplements here: http://www.ketokampsupplements.com  // F O L L O W ▸ instagram | @thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2B1NXKW ▸ facebook | /thebenazadi | http://bit.ly/2BVvvW6 ▸ twitter | @thebenazadi http://bit.ly/2USE0so Disclaimer: This podcast is for information purposes only. Interesting study out of Johns Hopkins University is saying that those with hearing loss are five times more likely to develop dementia. The 12 year study followed 639 adults and determined that when you lose hearing, the brain atrophies. There is a belief that says as you age, you lose hearing. Dr. Martin doesn't necessarily buy that and says diet plays an important role, and especially glycation. Glycation is the loss of elasticity and sugar makes it worse! Join Dr. Martin as he discusses the link between hearing loss and dementia in today's episode.

This plant compound acts as an antioxidant. But what people don't know is that when applied to the skin, we don't benefit from the resveratrol itself, but from the defense mechanism of the plant compound. It acts as an antioxidant and thus can protect cells against oxidative damage of free radicals and UV radiation on the skin by reducing the expression of AP-1 and NF-kB factors. It also slows down the process of photoaging the skin. Glycation is a process that is caused by the presence of excess glucose in skin fibers. This excess triggers an internal reaction in which sugar molecules adhere to the collagen and elastin proteins, which normally help keep skin firm and supple. As a direct result of glycation, our skin becomes more rigid which may increase the appearance of concerns such as puffiness, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and fine lines. Both mineral and chemical sunscreen technically do the job, they aren't made equally! Mineral sunscreens allow your skin to detoxify itself in a way that chemical sunscreen does NOT. With this process being crucial for your body's detoxification process, you can't afford to go the chemical sunscreen route.Skin trauma is the process in which the skin shows the appearance of past emotional traumas. Whether they are from repressed emotions or the expression of many negative emotions over time, these tend to manifest in the skin through different types of fine lines and wrinkles on one's skin. Health Mysteries Solved
136 Unconventional Ways to Help Hashimoto's and Overall Inflammation

Health Mysteries Solved

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2023 58:01

The Case:  Amanda has Hashimoto's and does not feel well. She is tired, experiences brain fog, and feels like she is just inflamed all over. She's tried special diets and various supplements but nothing seems to work.    When I first met Amanda I saw how much work she'd already put in but I know that many of the approaches were too general. We were going to need to dig a little deeper and look at the mind-body connection to solve her health mystery.  Inflammation Markers for Hashimoto's and Autoimmunity Whenever I see the body is not responding to good, healthy changes, I immediately think of the work that Dr. Mario Martinez is doing. He is a psycho-immunologist who studies the relationship between the mind and the immune system. He is also the bestselling author of "The Mind-Body Code" and "How the Mind Wounds and Heals". He's a good friend of the show (this is his 4th appearance!) and I know that he was the right person to talk to about this health mystery. Check out the other episodes featuring Dr. Martinez: 007, 051, 114. Anyone with autoimmunity or Hashimoto's knows that inflammation plays a big role in optimizing thyroid health and managing autoimmune conditions which greatly impact how we feel. Dr. Martinez explains that there are different markers to look for when assessing acute inflammation such as tumor necrosis factor, interleukins, and C-reactive proteins. He goes on to explain that there is something called glycogen, which is a sugar protein that is present in all cells, especially in the IGG antibody which fights pathogens. The glycan marker helps to track the amount of inflammation in the body and shows the level of glycation. Glycation is caused by glucose molecules reacting with proteins and fats leading to damage on a cellular level. If left unchecked, it can increase inflammation throughout the body. Understanding glycation on a deeper level is an essential part of understanding autoimmune-related issues and identifying underlying causes before embarking on any type of treatment plan. Could Shame be Causing Autoimmune and Hashimoto's Flare-Ups? Dr. Martinez has done a lot of research into the relationship between autoimmune diseases and shame. He found that states of shame can cause systemic high levels of inflammation making people more prone to autoimmune diseases. Interestingly, guilt does not have the same effect since guilt is about taking the blame for something (which allows them to feel empowered) versus the helplessness that comes with shame. He further explains that this can lead people to look for environments that continually shame (because they are familiar with it) or they turn to shaming others unknowingly which results in inflammation and can lead to or exacerbate autoimmune illnesses like Hashimoto's disease or arthritis. In this episode, we also talk about the connection between the fifth chakra, free self-expression, and shame. Dr. Martinez shares some techniques for identifying patterns of shame in your life that may be contributing to symptoms related to Hashimoto's or other autoimmune diseases.  Shame also has a connection to increasing your biological age (beyond your chronologic age) which is also related to the overall amount of inflammation in the body.    How to Use Centenarian Consciousness to Decrease Inflammation and Early Aging Dr. Martinez believes that you can address chronic inflammation by using a mind-body approach known as centenarian consciousness. This is a mindset that requires a shift in your perspective of time. So many of us feel the pressures of time. We are always (and even rewarding ourselves for) multitasking, rushing, and micromanaging. However, Dr. Martinez says that this can lead to increased levels of stress hormones like cortisol which can contribute to inflammation. To counteract this, Dr. Martinez suggests practicing taking more time with tasks by engaging in slow activities such as Zen walking or setting projections for how long something will take even if it could be done faster than expected. This allows the brain's neuropsychological projection system to adjust accordingly rather than expecting too much out of an inadequate amount of space/time given.  This may feel counterintuitive or, for some of us busy moms, impossible.  Dr. Mario Martinez suggests that people who feel chronically rushed try delegating tasks and practice various stress reduction techniques. He also recommends having fun with tasks, being aware of how much time is needed for each task, and looking at what resources can be used to make things easier.    Banning Busy-ness for Your Health It's also helpful to look at where our perceptions of busyness come from. Dr. Martinez says cultural components can lead to feeling overwhelmed, such as the belief that idle time is bad or one must work hard in order to succeed - which may have been passed down from generations before us through stories and mannerisms rather than direct comments about laziness or lack of productivity.  Getting beyond this cultural conditioning or learned beliefs may require you to create your own model by going into a meditative state and affirming yourself while providing evidence of being a good person throughout the week. This practice will shift your neuro map, which, over time, will change your beliefs and allow you to let go of your belief that being busy is good.    Joy as an Antidote to Inflammation? There is a counterbalance to the stress that causes inflammation and its joy. This is another mind-body solution that Dr. Martinez champions. He suggests that while we are dealing with issues related to Hashimoto's or autoimmunity, we do not think of ourselves as fighting them but rather overserve them and try to reduce their intensity. He says the best way to do this is to find joy while repairing yourself. This can be done by creating a semantic differential space. To do this, feel the space where the pain exists. Give it a size, a color, a pain rating - anything that will help you visualize the space. Then, go to a part of the body that is not in pain and do the same. Switch back and forth between these two spaces in your mind. This creates confusion in the brain and neural maps causing the pain to decrease.     In addition to using this semantic space differential technique, Dr. Martinez offered these tips for allowing joy in while repairing: Learn to experience joy under good conditions so that it is accessible to you in difficult situations. Use the mind-body code to assess and relax. Go into the specific feelings and sensations associated with the problem, such as tiredness or pain. Pay attention to these feelings as if watching a film. Have a positive attitude towards healing and avoid maintaining a sense of victimhood.   Can Curiosity Lower Inflammation?  He also discusses how curiosity plays an important role in elongating time in our minds; when we are curious about something, it feels like time passes more slowly because our brains pay attention to what excites us. This is part of the centenarian consciousness, which in turn is an approach to decreasing inflammation. Curiosity also plays into how we deal with determining what our body needs to heal. Instead of focusing on the pain, we get curious about it and tap into our intuition. Curiosity keeps us in the present moment which is also a piece of the centenarian consciousness because wise centenarians view the past, including mistakes as part of the information needed to navigate the present with curiosity. All of this results in less stress which can help decrease inflammation.  Conclusion Chronic inflammation plays a huge role in Hashimoto's and our overall health. I knew this was what was going on with Amanda. So, we started out by supporting her thyroid (based on her thyroid type) to get her thyroid hormones into the optimal range. Then we focused on calming the inflammation and balancing her immune system to decrease the attacks on her thyroid.  After dealing with a few other triggers (infections and parasites) we started to address stress as a trigger. This included really looking at her life and seeing how she can find more joy. We looked at how she could reframe and re-phrase to see the world through a more positive lens. We had to address some long-held limiting beliefs around time scarcity and her sense of not deserving perfect health. We used various coaching techniques, hypnosis, and some regression work to tackle these limiting beliefs. This approach was a bit of a surprise to her but by incorporating the mind-body pieces (and not just focusing on supplements) we were able to get the results she was looking for.    Happy Ending After 3 months, Amanda felt a huge shift! She reported that everything just seemed easier;  things were flowing more and she didn't feel like she was struggling every minute of the day. Not only did her energy and brain fog get better, but she also had less pain. This improvement in how she felt helped her to take on another job in a different industry which brought her way more joy - setting her up for future success in keeping Hashimoto's symptoms (and inflammation) in check. Working on her Hashimoto's ended up bringing her so much more than better health.   Eliminating Health Mysteries For Amanda, we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her health. Episode 2225 - On this Wednesday's show, we replay episode 266: Vinnie Tortorich and Anna Vocino discuss Dr. David Perlmutter's book, , with him in his first appearance on the show. They also discuss gluten and your health, saturated fats, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2022/11/gluten-your-health-dr-david-perlmutter-episode-2226 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS GLUTEN & YOUR HEALTH This episode is jam-packed with great information about how gluten and carbs affect brain health and function! Vinnie and Anna chat for a bit about a variety of things, then welcome Dr. David Perlmutter to the show. (18:05) Dr. David Perlmutter is the author of the bestseller "Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers." It's all about gluten and your health. Gluten sensitivity may relate to 30-40% of all people walking the planet who have a significant inflammatory response when they consume this protein found in wheat, barley, and rye called gluten. (22:40) Gluten induces inflammation and inflammation is the cornerstone of everything you don't want to get, like Alzheimer's, heart disease, and even cancer. (23:30) Your risk of developing type 1 diabetes if you have celiac disease is increased by about 300%. (23:50) Gluten sensitivity is an issue that goes far beyond a gut and upset stomach; it can cause joint pain, skin issues, and brain-related problems like depression and dementia, ADHD, obsessive-compulsive activity, and even schizophrenia. (24:40) People are misled that once they go gluten-free they're going to lose a lot of weight, which isn't true. Gluten-free food still has carbohydrates. (26:35) Fruit should be limited as well; Dr. Perlmutter and Vinnie suggest what is reasonable, as fruit is a very concentrated form of sugar. (26:45)  SATURATED FATS AS SUPER FUEL We desperately need saturated fat; as a result, we have to revise the whole notion that fat is bad for you. (28:00 Humans have been on a high-fat, low-carb, gluten-free diet for about two million years and it served us very well until the government decided to tell us that we need to go on a low-fat diet. (28:20) There's this bizarre notion that you need to have your whole grains each day and it just isn't true. (29:40) In 1992 the US government said we should eat a low-fat or no-fat diet and within 10 years of that doctrine, the rate of diabetes rose by 300%. (30:50) A recent study shows that saturated fat has no relevance when it comes to heart disease whatsoever. (31:20) Egg substitutes are detrimental to health but whole eggs are extremely healthful. (34:00) When it comes to dementia it's all about the carbs, not cholesterol--the brain needs cholesterol to function. (36:00) When people go gluten-free, cut out the carbs and reintroduce fat, we see breathtaking things: gaining back brain function, reducing issues with ADHD, losing weight, sleeping better, better libido, and less depression. (40:30) Glycation is the combination of protein and sugar, which increases the production of free radicals and turns on inflammation, which is the cornerstone of brain degeneration. (41:10) Dr. Perlmutter explains A1C; there is a perfect correlation between A1C levels and the risk of brain shrinkage and dementia. (42:00) As much as 54% of Alzheimer's cases in America could be avoided if people learned the impact of their lifestyle choices. (43:00) They also chat a bit about medications, especially for kids with ADHD. (46:00) They also chat about the relationship between doctors and drug companies. The author of one of my all-time favorite books recently released her second book, which was like Christmas coming early for me! Luckily, I had also met her before at an anti-aging conference and we have stayed in touch throughout the years. So I knew I had to Dr. Sandra Kaufmann on The Red Light Report for some amazing conversation about anti-aging and longevity strategies, especially as it relates to supplements and adjuvants —  topics that she is considered a bonafide expert. In her newest book, Aging Solutions, Dr. Kaufmann covers 28 different agents that she has found to be the most efficacious and backed by science, according to her rigorous research. We cover many agents from both of her books along with Dr. Kaufmann's skincare routine and other longevity hacks she as implemented over the years, including red light therapy!Dr. Sandra Kaufmann began her academic career in the field of cellular biology, earning a Master's Degree from the University of Connecticut in Tropical Ecology and Plant Physiology. Turning to medicine, she received her medical Degree at the University of Maryland, and completed a residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. She has been the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital for 9 years, a nationally recognized center of excellence.Dr. Kaufmann's avid interest in the science of anti-aging begun many years ago as an intense hobby. Utilizing her knowledge in cell biology, human pharmacology and physiology, this hobby has now become a main focus. The project represents years of non-clinical research leading to the first ever, comprehensive theory of aging. She has now released two books on longevity: The Kaufmann Protocol: Why We Age and How to Stop it, and just recently in 2022, Aging Solutions. This conversation could have easily gone on for hours and hours, as Dr. Kaufmann is a wealth of knowledge in some of my favorite topics and is fun to listen and learn from. I know you will all enjoy learning from her like I did and, if so, I highly recommend you check out BOTH of her books.
