Dr. Jay Cephas considers two Depression-era murals in Detroit and their contrasting messaging about workers, labor, and power. Diego Rivera's famed Detroit Industry murals (top), commissioned by Edsel Ford for the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1932, champions industrial and technological progress and the factory workers who fueled it. In contrast, Walter Speck and Barbara Wilson's 1937 untitled mural (bottom), which originally hung in the UAW Local 174 union hall and now hangs behind the reference desk at the Reuther Library, champions the progress those industrial workers made laboring for their own welfare via union action. Dr. Cephas is Assistant Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture at Princeton University. His essay “Detroit Industry and ‘The Mural': Representing Labor and Reappropriating Care in the Museum and in the Union Hall,” was published in the 2023 volume, Architectures of Care: From the Intimate to the Common. In celebration of the International Dyslexia Association's (IDA) 75th anniversary, the IDA is dedicating the recent issue of its journal, Perspectives, to structured literacy. In this episode, I speak with Jessica Hamman, the CEO of Glean Education, who authored two articles for the issue and co-edited it alongside Barbara Wilson. Jessica shares her path to dyslexia advocacy. Her parents were always involved in advocacy, and her father was even on the committee that created the definition of dyslexia that is now used in 45 states! As she went through the process of her own son being diagnosed with dyslexia, she recognized the great knowledge gaps that still existed among teachers due to a lack of training access. During our conversation, Jessica discusses her article in Perspectives about structured literacy and offers practical advice for parents told to focus only on their dyslexic child's reading skills. We then discuss the differences between dyslexia and dysgraphia and how those differences impact learning. Jessica and I also share our experiences as teachers moving from theoretical understandings to implementing our knowledge in the classroom. We wrap by setting straight a few common misunderstandings around structured literacy for teachers. Be sure to read the anniversary issue of Perspectives for free linked below! Have a question or want a certain topic covered? Send us an email or a DM on Instagram. I want to support parents with dyslexic children and get this content in the hands of those who need it most. This interview with an amazing couple – Rhoda and Gochin – who have operated a small family-style board and care home in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles) for the last 22 years, will leave you feeling anxious at the end. And that is the objective: to stimulate not just a sense of urgency, but emergency, to protect precious beds that provide homes for people living with mental illness in our city, in the county, in the state of California. In this interview, we move past the sterile staff reports that document the steady loss of facilities and beds. These are important statistics (see below for links) but what often is lost is the human impact of this emergency. Through Rhoda and Gochin's story, you will gain a glimpse into: The people who are living in the home, entrusted to their care, who feel safe and secure. What happens to them if this facility closes? The families of adult children with mental illness who worry about where their loved one will end up once they pass away and can no longer pay attention to the situation. The owner/operators of these facilities, who too often work for free, dip into their personal finances to make ends meet, and as Gochin says, “suffer in silence.” I am grateful to Rhoda and Gochin who were willing to trust me with this interview. I am also grateful to Barbara Wilson (interview guest in Season Two of this podcast) who is a tireless advocate for saving the board and care system and arranged for the meetings to prepare for this interview. In this interview, I reference recent reports documenting the state of the board and care crisis: County of Los Angeles, report issued June 5, 2023. City of Los Angeles, report issued May 12, 2023. I reference the petition sponsored by the Los Angeles Residential Care Association (LARCA). Please consider adding your name and sign up for more updates.I'm also including a link to a recent blog I posted on this topic entitled: Can We Commit to a Net Zero Loss of Board and Care Beds? Also, just this week, an excellent article appeared in the L.A. Times and references several board and care operators, including Rhoda. Lucinda is joined by Barbara Wilson and Dr Liz O'Riordan, to discuss the important topic of working with cancer. As professionals who have both experienced this devastating condition up close, Barbara and Liz share their invaluable insights, discussing all-important legal entitlements, and the best ways of ensuring that those who find themselves suffering through a cancer diagnosis are treated with the utmost care, respect and fairness at a time when it is needed most. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most medical directors and HR line managers are not aware that once diagnosed with cancer, you are legally disabled and have certain rights. One in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime - a huge number representing half the population. 1000 people are diagnosed every day. Some organisations have great policies, while others have none in place. Some have great policies but no structure for rolling it out on a local basis. We need a sense of uniformity and order. A terrifying statistic is that many women suffering through cancer do not tell their places of work for fear of being "retired". They carry on and push themselves to the limit, making themselves even worse. Join traveling translator Cassandra Reilly as she solves a new mystery in Lambda Literary Award winner Barbara Wilson's series about the London-based, Irish-American sleuth. In Not the Real Jupiter Cassandra is translating two manuscripts from Spanish. One of them is a collection of stories of speculative fiction by her old friend, the Uruguayan writer Luisa Montiflores. When editorial complications threaten its publication by an independent press in Portland, Cassandra travels from Luisa's apartment in Montevideo to the coast of Oregon to meet the publisher and sort things out. Only to find that those complications now include a body that fell—or was pushed—over the side of a bluff. Under suspicion herself and ordered not to leave the country, Cassandra heads to Portland to do her own investigation. Here she encounters Latina writers, a well-known children's author, and an attractive librarian in her quest to solve the mystery and get back home to London. Not yet retired—and still game for almost anything—Cassandra finds the trail is more tangled and fraught with family secrets than she ever imagined. Barbara Wilson's previous Cassandra Reilly mysteries include Gaudí Afternoon and The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. State Auditor Rob Sand, who is eyeing a run for governor next year, says Gov. Kim Reynolds violated Iowa law by using federal funds to pay for a public service announcement to raise public awareness about COVID-19. According to his Thursday report, about $500,000 in federal coronavirus pandemic relief funds were used on the “Step Up, Stop the Spread” public awareness campaign. Another $17,000 spent producing the videos may have violated the law. Reynolds appears in the one-minute video for about 10 seconds, according to Sand and his staff. She said she is proud of the public awareness campaign and said Sand is misreading the state law. The governor's office said his accusation ignores the opening clause of the law that refers to an exception in the law that applies to the power and authority of the governor during a public health disaster emergency. If you enjoyed that back and forth, get ready for 2022. University of Iowa researchers and public health groups have received a $500,000 federal grant to find ways to improve the COVID-19 vaccination rates in Iowa's smallest communities. The yearlong project will focus on 17 communities, with researchers working with community residents in creating strategies that overcome barriers and encourage residents to seek the vaccine. In the first phase, UI researchers will collect data to understand who is not getting vaccinated in 17 “micropolitan” cities — those with a population between 10,000 and 49,999. The cities include Fairfield in Jefferson County and Ottumwa in Wapello County. Just under 42 percent of the state's population has been fully vaccinated. But this lags behind most of Iowa's more populated urban counties where vaccination rates are closer to 50 percent. With https://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/new-university-of-iowa-president-starts-dream-job-july-15/ (Barbara Wilson )just over a month away from starting as the next University of Iowa president with a base salary of $600,000, the Board of Regents voted Thursday to raise Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen's base pay to match. Wintersteen had been earning an annual salary of $590,000, on par with former UI President Bruce Harreld, whose last day of his nearly six-year stint was May 16. After a national search netted four finalists, regents on April 30 chose Wilson to succeed Harreld starting July 15. The board Thursday did not change University of Northern Iowa President Mark Nook's compensation. In 2019, it extended his contract through 2025 — with an option to renew through 2027 — but did not increase his base pay of $357,110. A Cedar Rapids man is facing an attempted murder charge in connection with a shooting last year at a commercial property in southwest Cedar Rapids. Tyler John Koob, 34, also faces charges of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, assault going armed with intent, and carrying weapons. Cedar Rapids police were called to 1027 Ninth St SW just before 10:30 p.m. Nov. 18 on reports of a shooting. Officers found Koob, who had been wounded by gunfire, near the building. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said. According to the criminal complaint, a 49-year-old man told police Koob had knocked on the door of the building and, when the man answered the door, “fired several shots barely missing” the man. Unfortunately for Koob, the man also was armed with a gun, and he had much better aim. According to the complaint, police interviewed Koob about the incident afterward. He told police he had gone to the property because he'd heard people were badmouthing him. He told police he had...

Iowa is turning down nearly three quarters of the COVID-19 vaccine doses available to the state from the federal government because demand for the shots remains weak. Last week, the Iowa Board of Regents selected Barbara Wilson to be the next president of the University of Iowa. IPR State Government reporter Katarina Sostaric provides updates on what is happening at the statehouse. Plus, inmates in some Iowa prisons remain on lock down 23 hours a day, weeks after two inmates allegedly killed two staffers at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. IPR's Kate Payne reports some advocates worry the attack could lead to a rollback in opportunities across the prisons.
This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2. If this weekend is any indication, we are moving into the warmer and rainier part of spring. According to the National Weather Service on Saturday it will be sunny with a high near 85 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area. It could get quite breezy Saturday, with winds reaching as high as 20 to 25 mph and gusting as high as 40 mph. Then on Sunday it will be partly sunny with a high near 81 degrees. After 1 p.m. there will be increasing chances of showers and thunderstorms, with the chance for precipitation reaching 80 percent by Sunday night. Showers could continue through next Tuesday. In contrast to her predecessor, who was chosen for his work in private business and his outside perspective, the University of Iowa's next president is a seasoned academic leader with a doctorate and nearly two decades of administrative experience in academia. Barbara Wilson was named as the next University of Iowa president Friday. She has served as second-in-command for the last five years over the sprawling three-campus, $6.74 billion University of Illinois System She takes the reins July 15 from retiring UI President Bruce Harreld, who started in September 2015 and wraps his tenure May 16. Harreld felt the pros and cons of his outsider status, as he was never quite accepted by several members of the university community, who were critical of his hiring and his decisions. Outgoing Graduate College Dean John Keller will serve as interim during the two-month gap. Wilson will become the university's third female president — following Mary Sue Coleman, who served from 1995 to 2002, and Sally Mason, who served from 2007 to 2015. Sticking with University of Iowa news, all seven Iowa Supreme Court justices have agreed the University of Iowa and Board of Regents must hand over extensive financial details and documents about their https://www.thegazette.com/education/university-of-iowa-lands-1-165-billion-in-utilities-deal/ ($1.165 billion public-private partnership) with a Paris-based collaborative to operate the UI utilities system for the next 50 years. Specifically, the board must disclose the names of investors — including the 21.5 percent of Iowa investors it reported chipped in financing to make the deal happen, according to a Supreme Court opinion released Friday. “Taxpayers of Iowa, who bear the ultimate financial risk for this transaction, are entitled to know if the (regents) got the best deal available and if anyone had a conflict of interest,” according to the Supreme Court ruling. The University of Iowa in December — after a nearly yearlong inquiry and search process — agreed to partner with Paris-based global energy provider Engie and infrastructure investment firm Meridiam for 50 years of private operation of its $1 billion utility system. In exchange for their upfront lump sum payment of $1.165 billion, the partners landed five decades of guaranteed revenue — as the UI must pay its new partner a $35 million annual fixed fee while also covering all utility expenses, employee costs, maintenance and upgrades, fuel and other items. Iowa City West High School student Shreya Khullar was inaugurated as Iowa's first Iowa student poet ambassador Friday in the state Capitol in Des Moines. The program --- inspired by presidential inauguration poet Amanda Gorman, the youngest to read her poetry at the Jan. 20 inauguration for President Joe Biden — operates out of the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa. Khullar, 17, a junior at West High, was chosen as the first Iowa student poet ambassador from more than 300 creative writing entries. She was inaugurated on the last day of National Poetry Month. Barbara Wilson, LCSW, has had a distinguished career in social service and helping people for over 50 years. She is well-known in Los Angeles County as a tireless advocate for improved services to people coping with serious mental illness and the families who care for them. She also is credited for being one of the first in the state to sound the alarm approximately seven years ago that a precious housing resource for people with mental illness was slipping away due to the fiscal realities facing board and care operators whose rent revenues were not keeping pace with escalating costs. In this interview, Barbara walks us through an important chapter in California’s history. Any young student in social work would do well to sit at the feet to learn from this wise woman. Policy makers interested in reform should take heed.Barbara describes the role of a psychiatric social worker during a time where they had the responsibility –and the authority -- to partner with people and take into consideration their whole life needs. This is exactly what they do in Trieste, and still do in Trieste. This is why people don’t slip through the cracks in Trieste. In the 1970’s, there was a statewide system in place to serve people with mental illness, with very few bureaucratic layers. She was assigned to the 90044 area code. As she describes this, it reminds me of the “micro-areas” in Trieste where one social worker has a broad command of the human needs in his or her assigned catchment area. So, in fact, it appears that once upon a time, in California, we did provide a social safety net that involved social workers looking out for the interests of people.Barbara was responsible for the re-entry of people coming out of the state hospital system back into the community. She describes the origin of the board and care system, where well-meaning people would open their homes to guests. The unravelling of these safety nets occurred in the 1980’s. We hear about the increasing bureaucratization – social workers moving into desk jobs -- and the dismantling of a system that bestowed a sense of trust upon social workers to do the right thing for their clients.Feeling overwhelmed by the needs of the people she was trying to serve and the constraints of a system that was taking away her freedom to serve them, she took an early retirement as the 1980’s came to a close. After raising her family, she re-entered this space, urged on by desperate families looking for help and advice on how to navigate an increasingly broken system in behalf of their loved ones. We’ll hear how Barbara’s life seemed to go full circle; the whole person safety net care she provided as a public psychiatric social worker in the 1970’s now became a skill she could rely on as she started her own business (now a non-profit) Mental Health Hookup. The message: we can do better, because we used to. Tomorrow’s leaders are encouraged to listen and learn from the past.LinksMental Health Hookup Facebook link(2) Mental Health Hookup | Facebook Report co-authored by Barbara Wilson:A Call to Action: The Precarious State of our Board and Care System Serving Residents Living with Mental Illness in Los Angeles County

Ecological science has had a persistent blind spot: the deep involvement of Indigenous peoples in managing their lands and waters. The return of Sea Otters from the brink of extinction, while celebrated, was enacted under a framework of settler colonialism. As voracious predators themselves, otters compete with humans for all of the same sea foods. Organizations thrive and survive on the creativity of their employees. But what constitutes “creativity”? Are we born with it? Can it be drawn out of us by our teammates, manager, or the type of work we do? And what is the relationship between creativity and employee engagement, and how do both impact problem solving? Dr. Tracy Stanley, a social scientist and author of The Engagement Whisperer, and Barbara Wilson, an executive coach, and creativity facilitator and trainer provide some answers.

Sarah and Makoto kick off the first episode of As The Multiverse Turns with discussion on Nightschool: The Weirn Books and a back issue of Zatanna! Then, they breakdown a list of their favorite Batgirl costumes! Listen to episode HERE!The list, in no particular order (Though the first one is definitely Mako's favorite...)1. Barbara Gordon, recent New 52. Two words: Body Armor2. Barbara Gordon, earlier New 52/The Adventures of Batman and Robin. Gold and purple= visual win for Sarah.3. Barbara Gordon (again), Birds of Prey Tv series. Best live action batgirl costume ever, in Makoto's opinion.4. Barbara Wilson, Batman & Robin. That movie may not be critically acclaimed, but the costume is still memorable.5. Stephanie Brown, DC comics. Gotta love the purple.6. Cassandra Cain, DC comics. Possibly the most fear-inducing design. Don't want to come face to face with that in a dark alley.7. Barbara Gordon, Batman: The Animated Series. I Can't Believe It's Not Batman!8. Tiffany Fox, Futures End. I have seen the future, and the future is bling.
