For centuries the western Norse colony of Vinland was known only to scholars of the Icelandic Sagas. But in the 19th century the work of a few Scandinavian historians helped revive interest in these previously obscure tales. When the Danish historian Carl Christian Rafn published in his work in English in 1837, many American's were exposed to the idea that the Norse had beaten Columbus to North America by 500 years. Many New Englanders were also excited by the idea that the legendary colony of Vinland may have been in Cape Cod. However, this new interest in the American Vikings also kicked off a wave of Norse flavored forgeries. Some were inspired to create elaborate pseudo-histories that supplanted the America's true first people with a lost group of Norse settlers. The real history of the Norse in North America was soon clouded by a haze of hoaxes and fantasies. While El Mencho has been buried in a golden casket, we are yet to see a photo of his corpse (those that have been circulated have been found to be fake). When I went to the cabins where Mencho's was captured I found some curious details that didn't add up, including .50 caliber shells inside a room with no visible damage to the walls or windows. There could of course be a non-nefarious explanation. These four have been having apocalyptic visions, and their goal is to get one member of the young family to sacrifice themself, and be killed by the other two, to prevent the end of the world. One by one the intruders kill themselves to herald a new disaster while the couple while Andrew and Eric figure out if that sacrifice is possible or even desired. While the location may have been jokingly dismissed by others, it provides the peaceful setting where Anson balances family life, a full time job, and his work as a novelist.Anson shares how his love of storytelling began early. As a child he was introduced to fantasy and science fiction through books like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. That early exposure sparked a lifelong interest in imaginative worlds and planted the idea that one day he would write a book of his own.The turning point came after a vivid dream about a man on fire wielding an axe while fighting demons in the real world. The imagery stayed with him so strongly that he began writing down everything he could remember the next morning. What started as notes about the dream quickly expanded into ten pages of world building and eventually became the foundation for his series.Anson quickly learned that having a great idea is only the first step. Early in the process he discovered the difference between writers who “pants” their stories and those who outline them in advance. Although he initially believed he was someone who could simply sit down and write, he realized outlining the plot and character arcs gave him the structure he needed to make steady progress.With a demanding schedule and four children at home, his writing routine happens early in the morning before the rest of the day begins. Each session is guided by a clear goal. Knowing what he wants to accomplish in each chapter allows him to make the most of limited writing time and continue building the story step by step.The series blends science fiction, fantasy, and horror within a post apocalyptic setting. The story begins with a failed secret experiment that tears open a breach between worlds, unleashing terrifying creatures often described as demons. Main Topic of the Day From Personality-Driven to Framework-Driven Yesterday I sat down and drilled into every project and business I run. Income-generating. Money-costing. Even things like helping when someone in the community is ill — and yes, we should mention the Jeffrey Dheeres fundraiser. Everything fit into three buckets: Nicole Sauce centered Holler Homestead centered Weird outliers The outliers go on the chopping block first. But the bigger realization was this: I have been avoiding a leadership vacuum. I kept waiting for consensus. Waiting for another leader to step forward. Waiting for clarity to magically appear. And while I waited, I tried to just do more myself. That cost me peace. It led to burnout. It stalled momentum. Here's the lesson: If I don't accept my role as leader — meaning I walk in front instead of pushing from behind — we stay in one place. Not because people aren't good. Not because they don't care. Because without structure, everything becomes personality-driven. And personality-driven systems stall when the personality gets tired. What we're building now at Holler Homestead is a framework. Basecamp Lodge is functional. Classes are being scheduled (like the March 14 bacon class). The basement classroom is moving forward. Homestead systems are being documented. The buying club is poised for its first test. We're looking at additional acreage. Long-term vision: Expanded land. Commons effort. Cabins for temporary stays. People coming to experience regenerative community, food, skill-building, and reset. Membership options for non-residents. Not a massive intentional community. An example. Something that can be learned from and replicated elsewhere. And here's the key: Structure allows generosity. When more people in the community have needs, chaos doesn't scale — structure does. If you don't build framework, your generosity burns you out. If you build framework, your generosity becomes sustainable. So here's the question for you: Where are you avoiding stepping into leadership? Where are you burning out because you won't build structure? Is your project personality-driven when it needs to become framework-driven? Sometimes growth doesn't require more effort. It requires clarity. And someone willing to walk in front.

Greg Jenner is joined in twentieth-century America by Dr Hannah Thuraisingam Robbins and comedian Desiree Burch to learn all about singer and Hollywood actress Lena Horne. Born into a middle class Black family in New York, a young Lena Horne soon followed in the footsteps of her actress mother and made her début at the famous Cotton Club aged only 16. After making her name as a singer and performer – and following the end of her tumultuous first marriage – Horne transferred to the west coast and bagged a Hollywood contract with MGM. There, she appeared in a number of classic films, including Stormy Weather and Cabin in the Sky. Over the next several years, she would also perform for the troops in the Second World War, fall in love with and marry a white composer and arranger, undertake an international tour, and become one of the most popular nightclub performers of the post-war era. But the racism of segregation-era America would also shape and limit the career of the woman known as ‘the first Black pin-up girl', eventually leading her to the civil rights movement and Black activism in the 1960s. This episode traces Lena's journey from young dancer to Hollywood star and renowned vocalist, along the way exploring her connections with figures including Billie Holliday and Martin Luther King Jr., and the injustice she spent so much of her career fighting against.
