Hey guys, welcome to or welcome back to the Retreat Leaders Podcast. It's Shannon and I'm super excited to have a guest today. That is another Fellow of France Retreat member. I met her in France and fell in love with her and her energy, and I'm super excited to have her on the show because she's going to be super vulnerable with us. Y'all. and share with us something that a lot of retreat leaders hesitate to share about, or they just don't even want to talk about it sometimes, or they make it sound different than it was. And that is learning through our first retreat and how we would want to do it maybe differently. Speaker 1 00:01:01  And just we're going to go dig right into it. So welcome, Misty to the show. Thank you. I'm excited to be here. I'm so excited to see your face again. It's not the same as France, but I am glad to see your face. before we get started into this topic, just tell us a little bit about who you are and, you know, give us a little bit of a taste of what? What makes Misty. Misty. Yeah. So my name is Misty chambers. I live in Houston, Texas and have a brick and mortar Pilates studio there. I have been in the movement industry, most of my life. started off, teaching dance and then got into yoga and pilates and, along the way, I've done interior design and, and now retreats. So, I've kind of had a, a long little detour of things that have gotten to me where I am now. And, So, yeah, it's a little bit about me. I think all of us have that to some degree. Speaker 1 00:02:07  If I talked about all the different hats that I've worn until I got to the space. And it's funny because all the hats I have worn helped me in the space that I am in today. And I think that just is kind of how it is. So, so Misty, you just recently had your very first retreat, you hosted your very first retreat. You were actually when you left us in France, you were headed to host your retreat. And. Exactly. Yeah. Through that process, we kind of all you were keeping us all in the loop during this retreat on Voxer. And my heart was like, oh, my poor Misty, because I feel like the universe was showing you, like all the things that could possibly make you cranky about hosting a retreat. It was definitely a learning experience. Yes, but part of what we're going to talk about is a lot of times, retreat leaders think that their first retreat is like going to be that that. Speaker 2 00:03:02  Oh, all. Speaker 1 00:03:03  You know, like this is it. Speaker 1 00:03:04  This is exactly how it's going to be. I'm so excited. You know, there might have been 1 or 2 things, but, you know, this is it. And it's like, that's not always the case. As a matter of fact, I would say more often than not, after you host your first retreat, you're like, first of all, do I even want to keep doing this? Second of all, how can I, you know, change all these different things? And so anyway, Misty, let's just start off with maybe your very first thing that you were like, okay, this is what happened and this is what I plan to do differently in the future. Sure. And to feed off of what you said a second ago, I don't know if you got if you remember in the box or chat. after the retreat, I was like, I don't know if I'm cut out for this. I don't know if I want to host another retreat because I had such a challenging time with this one. Speaker 1 00:03:53  And, I think one of the things that made it so difficult is that one of one of my guest was ill, and she was very challenging to deal with because she did not feel good. She was not, nice to me. She wasn't nice to her tour guide. She we stayed at a hotel. She was not nice to the hotel staff, and it just made the energy very low. And like, we were walking on eggshells. And I one of the the first things in dealing with that, I would say that I have learned is that I don't want to stay at the same place, like I did. we we were staying at the same hotel. I, in fact, was just two doors down from, this woman. And I would want to hole up in my room when we were not doing anything because I didn't want to, you know, I needed some downtime to myself. And so, one lesson learned is that I think I would, stay either at another hotel or make sure that I was in a room in a different part of the hotel. Speaker 1 00:05:05  If you're or if you're doing a retreat venue staying offsite. just to give yourself a little bit of decompression time. yeah. So I love this. Before we keep digging in, I realized we didn't really share kind of what what your retreats entail. And so you're misty. You focus primarily on travel and culture experiences. And I remember when you and I talked, I was like, oh, my gosh, this is my jam. Like, it's it's not a travel guide. It's like a travel guide on steroids, right? I don't even I don't even like using the word travel guide. It's it's an experience that you're providing, you know, where it's got all elements of the retreat, what would be considered a retreat. It just doesn't have maybe a retreat transformation at the end so much as an immersion in this really cool place space, you know, and so anyway, so it includes, you know, lots of different aspects of it, the excursions and exploring and the meals and conversations. But it's just, you know. Speaker 1 00:06:08  It's a it's a travel and culture immersion. So I just I wanted to clarify that. So that way people are like, well, what were you doing in a hotel? Because not everybody does retreats in hotels. Some, some people do. and I also love that you said, because this is something that I talk about all the time when it comes to hosting retreats is retreat. Leaders have to have a separate space, at minimum, a completely separate room. Right? Because I've had I've seen retreat leaders where they're sharing rooms in co shared spaces, like with their retreat guests. And I just do not think that's a good idea. So at minimum you have to have a separate room like here on the ranch. It's a whole separate building at the back of the property. It's the retreat leader's apartment. They have their own own little kitchenette, even, like it's just a space where they can kind of, regroup, reset, retreat themselves. So that way they can show up as their best selves. Speaker 1 00:06:55  So I'm really glad that you said that. And then there are retreat leaders like Aaron, who's who. We met each other through where she even stays off site. So she might be a few houses down from the house or the venue that she's using, or whatever may be the case, so she can completely decompress and she's got someone on point like Matt, which I think Matt was her retreat coordinator, which I think was one of the points that you were going to make to Misty is having a retreat coordinator, right? Yes. Again, because I had a guest that was ill. I was having to, manage her, like finding a doctor. her husband also came. they wanted an extra room so they didn't have to sleep in the same room since she was sick. So just navigating all these, different, things that were unexpected. We also had to pivot the activities that we were doing. Now, I did have a tour guide that I had for three days during the retreat. she was local there, and, she was fantastic and did help with, the pivoting of the activities and stuff. Speaker 1 00:08:09  But it would have been helpful had I had, you know, some like Daysha Danzy or Matt Quinonez, who I hope I said his name correctly and right. Who, who, does this retreat coordination. That can be your point of contact, who can handle all those things so that you can be fully present for your other guests and not take time away trying to juggle all these, pivots. If you haven't listened to that episode, you got to dig into it. It's she's an incredible retreat coordinator. It is so critical that you have an on point person who takes all of these things on because Misty, as you've probably know and felt every single time this person would come at you with some of the thing they needed or whatever, it would just totally hit your nervous system and your whole body. And then to continue to try to hold space and and stay light and joyful and excited about the experience is really hard. Where if you have a point person on site who is the one that is the first stop for everything that's needed, every issue that comes up, everything that's needed, that's the first stop. And then if they can't handle something, then yeah, they can come to you and say, hey, Misty, I'm not clear where I should go with this direction. Fine. Speaker 1 00:10:07  But there should be a first stop person. So thank you for bringing that up because I think that that's so under underutilized underrated not talked about enough. And so yes. Thank you. So. So lesson one was you know staying away from your guests, having your own space to retreat to and, you know, decompress and just reset. And then lesson number two is having a retreat coordinator or assistant on site to help you. What other types of lessons did you learn? So, since we were staying at a hotel and not at a retreat venue, I did not have a chef on site, so we were eating out at all of our meals at different restaurants. We had, two meals that we did at the hotel. Most of the meals that we did were like, the menus were the prefix menus, but on the occasions where they weren't, I found myself going over the allotted budget that I had had per person. while I tried to, we were in the champagne region, so of course there was a lot of champagne, being consumed. Speaker 1 00:11:17  So I would try to order a bottle to help mitigate, you know, the different, amount of glasses that might be, ordered, but, you know, I couldn't predict what people were going to order for their meals. And while I tried to look at the menus ahead of time and tried to guesstimate a good budget per person, I felt like every time that we went out to eat, I was, blowing my budget a little bit. So I think having, an agreement with the restaurant beforehand, having a preset menu, these are the things that you can choose from, would definitely be helpful. Or, you know, allotting a budget, like if you're having the meal at the hotel, you know, giving, a certain amount of credit towards meals. but, just going out to dinner and, you know, I was including all meals, in the retreat and maybe giving some free time for them to go to dinner on their own would also be helpful. Hey, it's Shannon here. I'm just popping in really quickly to ask a big favor. Speaker 1 00:12:30  Would you pause the show and go review it for us, please? I love that option that they could have, you know, a meal on their own in this cultural experience. I think that that would be a great option, but especially just having the preset, you know, just a preset. This is this is where you can order from. And if you want to order off of this, that's fine, but that'll be at your, your expense. being super clear. But Misty, you know, considering that you had never done this. I don't know that somebody would have thought of that, because you did look at the menus and you estimated and you, you know, you were prepared as much as you could be until you experience it. Speaker 1 00:13:21  And this is why I always say, like, you really won't know until you do. You know what I mean? Like you, we can plan and we can guess and we can do all the things. And that's good. That's a good start, you know? But until you do it, like your first time doing it, that's when you'll see like, oh, my budget was a little off here. Or oh, I didn't even think about this could happen. What would I do in the future? You know, so so again, this is just another thing that, you know, you won't you won't know everything until you do it. And even when you do it, Misty, there's still going to be times if you decide to do it again. There's going to be times where you're like, well, shit, I didn't think of that either, you know? And that just that just happens over time as you start to accumulate these experiences and these, just things that will come up and and be able to plan for those things. Speaker 1 00:14:12  So anyway, what else? so my other lesson, which I have heard many times from Aaron, and then also more recently Dora Rankin, was not to just market your retreat, but to sell the retreat. And I think I did a great job putting all the beautiful marketing and all the wonderful things that we were going to be doing, and it got people to say, oh, wow, that sounds like a great experience. But that's all I was doing was marketing. I did not ask for the sale, and that's very challenging for me. so definitely lesson learned. And I know that that's something that I need to work on and get more confident at doing, but people aren't just going to come because you put out pretty post and it looks amazing. So, definitely ask for the cell. You know, this is such a big one. Missed this for retreat leaders who've been doing it for years and years. They're still not necessarily doing that part of it, which is why I'm so glad I also had Dora on the show to talk about the difference between marketing and selling. Speaker 1 00:15:33  And if you are an entrepreneur, really, we're all selling, but especially if you're an entrepreneur, you're also a sales person. Like this is part of it. And you're right. Marketing isn't selling. Marketing's attracting, but it's not selling. And so I'm so proud of you for talking about that. And in general, Misty, thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing, you know, your lessons, but also the fact that you were super, super like upfront saying, I don't know, you know, if I want to do this again, I, you know, like that's, that's a real thing and maybe you just need some time to like, release some of the, let's just be honest. Trauma of it. To release some of that trauma and then get reignited with your passion and your why and and what it could look like, and knowing that some of the quote unquote worst has already happened. Right. I mean, really, it has. And so because I don't want you to give up, because I want to come on one of your retreats. Speaker 1 00:16:30  Like you're speaking my language when it comes to travel and cultural experiences. I just think that that is, it's something that's so needed and it's such a beautiful thing. And not to mention that your energy is absolutely perfect for it, so I wouldn't want you to give up, but I also would want you to do it with your whole heart. So I don't know. What are you thinking? Where are you at today? So now that it has been, a few weeks since my return from a very challenging time, and have given it some more thought, I do want to continue. And in fact, I do want this to be a more a cultural Role travel experience. that will be unique and fun. And, I'm already looking at planning my next one. I'm hoping that it will be in New York, in December. A little Christmas, Christmas trip. So, I'm in the process of, hopefully trying to get that together, and I've got a few other ideas in mind for 2026, so we'll stay tuned for that. Speaker 1 00:17:42  So I'm not giving up yet. Good, good. That makes me so, so happy I really don't. And some people may just not want to stick around that long, but I really don't think you truly, truly know until your third one. And I know that sounds funny. Like why the third one? Well, the first one. You're almost just like a deer in headlights. No matter how much you work with Aaron, who's amazing. You work with Dora, who's amazing. Like they gave you a good framework and they're continuing to do so, but they're not the one hosting, right? Your first one you are. And so it's just like that kind of deer in headlights first one. And then you were happened to be blessed with a lot of challenges in your first one. Right. So but anyway, the first one is just like the deer in the headlights. The second one is like, okay, I'm getting traction. I figured out some things that I feel did not work. Speaker 1 00:18:30  I've learned some lessons, and you're kind of like, okay with this new mindset, but it's really like your third one that you're like, you've you've pretty much fine tuned who you want to be, who you want to be there with you, what your message is, what the experience is going to feel like for you and your guests. Like it's really fine tuned by your third one. And that's when you know, in my opinion, you're like, yes, this is what I want to do. Or you're like, nope, I want to be a guest on retreats instead instead of this. And so, like, I really don't feel like, you know, to your third one. So I'm really happy that you are. I agree. listen, I if we, we should have a whole show about all the things that we've learned. I hate saying the word wrong because it just it isn't wrong. It just is what it is. And it's just a learning experience. But I have had some doozies in my life. Misty in my retreat life of of guests that were in pain and lashing out. physical issues of, you know, altercations. I have had some, some things. And so let me just tell you that that's okay. Like, it really is. Okay. It's part of the learning experience. And, it makes us so much better at what we do. It makes us so much better at holding space. And it is so true. It can only go up from this one. Misty, because you did have quite a few challenges. But I'm so proud of you. I'm so proud of you for keeping your head up through it all. You were texting us and you were super receptive and, and honestly, at the end of the day, you have such a beautiful heart. But she tells her that you know that I support you. It's time for you to do your own thing. Tyler pulls over and tells Gail it's time for her to try it on her own (plus he needs to give Alicia some love and ride with her cuz he's a gentlemen). She's nervous but she does it!!! You go Gail! Lori is proud of herself for handing over her script. She doubts anything will come of it but she did it and that's big for her. And her sister is so proud of her. After ATV riding, Tyler hangs out with Alicia and Gail and gives them a friendship pep talk that would make you run through a wall. They then all get rocks and write down something they want to let go of and they throw it into the water. Back on cruise, it's time for the pajama party, of course the 3 wise men do their dance. The women in the crowd are going nuts. It's time for Mr Shipmas - cruise version of finding Mr Christmas. Of course ripped Rob is competing. He tells Jonathan Bennett about the wedding and of course he's excited. Gail and Alicia are playing shuffleboard and of course Erin Cahill and Sarah Drew walk up. They're talking about friendship and they're all crying over the power of friendship. Back at Shipmas, Jonathan announces to the crowd about the engagement and Rob tells everyone that they're all invited. Rob does not win. Momma Kerry sees Taylor Cole sitting by herself in the empty dining room. She thanks Taylor for being such an active supporter of breast cancer awareness because Kerry beat breast cancer and they bond and it's sweet.   Lori and sister get back to their room and find a note on their door from Paul and Kimberley asking to meet. They have the script. Paul tells them that they checked out the first couple pages and then he pauses and that's it.

Emilie isn't really fit to take care of the kids but she doesn't want them to get put in the system, so she takes them and they get on the road. They stop in this small town of Bethlehem and go to this diner where this women is talking about how they should stay at the Pierce home and keeps talking about angels. Turns out, she's an angel! We know that because when a police officer comes in after they left, she's no where to be found.So Emilie stops at the Pierce home, finds the key, and they stay there for the night. In the morning, there's a knock at the door. It's two ladies who live across the street. They assume she's the Pierce's niece all grown up. They bring breakfast, turn on the gas and the water, and couldn't be more helpful.  Emilie decides not to push their luck and goes to leave. But her car breaks down before they can leave. The local police chief, Nathan Blair, pulls up and offers to give them a ride into town for some groceries. He ends up paying for everything.  And boy is he into her. She knows that they can only stay there for a little bit so she tries to put up walls but he's not having it. He looks into her and the angel helps make all the paper work for the house seem official. A fax comes in that shows that she's wanted for kidnapping but the police department doesn't notice it. No problem at all. Nathan shows up to put up more Christmas decorations for the kids and they end up kissing in the attic. She knows she has to leave before Christmas because her "uncle" is supposed to show up. But when she finds out that the airport is closed, she decides to stay and bring the kids to see "Santa" who is actually Nathan. It's there that everything goes to heck. First, the police administrator finds the fax. And then Alana tells Santa that she wants to see her real mom for Christmas. Nathan is real mad so he goes to a bar and talk to the angel who encourages him to forgive her.This case immediately goes to court to figure out what to do with Emilie, for lying about who she is and with the kids who she kidnapped. Nathan shows up and speaks in support of Emilie, says that they can live with him, and that he'd also like to marry her because he loves her. That's enough for the judge. They're good to go and they kiss big ones as the kids run and hug them. They go outside and it's snowing and Alana notices the statue of the angel in the town square looked a whole lot like the angel from the diner. It was a season for miracles.

And I really just feel like this episode is so powerful. And as always, thanks for listening, and I'll catch you next time on the Dental A Team Podcast.   Morgan Hamon (00:22) But no, you got to do the stuff. So if your accountant tells you, look, take a board meeting, document it properly, there's a proper way to do it, you got to do it. That's how we say the proper legal avoidance. your account comes to you and says, look, it's time to be an S-Corp,   Kiera Dent (00:30) Mm-hmm.   Morgan Hamon (00:39) because the profit is appropriate, you gotta follow the instruction. There's a procedure there and it's gonna save a lot of money on self-employment payroll tax if it's done correctly. You gotta listen, but you gotta engage. There's action items. And so we, ⁓ every September, I made a checklist. You know, again, Navy guy, right? I got a checklist. Log in, do the checklist. I call it our business tax savings maximizer. That's the flashiest, catchiest name I could think of. But like, log in and do it. That's the secret.   Kiera Dent (00:58) I love it.   you   Morgan Hamon (01:08) So, you know, for those listeners that waiting for the secret, that's it, right? We got to capture expenses as business deductions and there is action items for the doctor. It requires that engagement. And to circle back to where what you said earlier, like you can't come into the office and just fix it for them. They've got responsibilities on things to do too and that's the same with tax policy.   Kiera Dent (01:31) I thought that was such a beautiful way. And as you were going through the phases of grief, I'm like, oh yeah, I definitely lived all of those. And I think it does feel like a kick in the gut. like, this is worse than finding out like coal in your stocking Christmas morning. Like it's way worse. Like it feels awful. And you're in total denial that like, how is this even real? Like I live in America. Like, how is this real? I didn't know. And I mean, then you put on your state tax on there. And I'm like, for people who are in California,   Morgan Hamon (01:39) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (02:00) Like more than 50 % of your income could be going to tax pending upon your tax bracket. But I think Morgan is one of those things of also seeing, I know people don't want to hear, I'm going to be very unpopular right here and it's okay. It will like, you'll be in denial, you'll hate it. And then you'll be like, yeah, that's actually a really good point. Cause that's how I did it. Like taxes are a blessing though. Like we, we are so blessed to live in the country we are to be able to set the pricing that we want, to be able to do the work that we want to do that. like, I don't want to pay more taxes.   Morgan Hamon (02:12) you   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (02:28) but I can see me paying taxes as like my opportunity to be here and to be a business owner. And I think that's an amazing thing that we do get to have access to. But like you said, shoot guys, this is where the discipline comes in. This is where the engagement comes in. This is where the ownership comes in. I remember where I should like, I'll send you a picture. My husband and made this like vision board together, cause every December I would cry over taxes. And one of my goals, literally has like, it's a sign that says tax expert ahead.   Morgan Hamon (02:33) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (02:57) And I put that on my vision board because I'm I'm sick of this stupid stuff. I'm sick of Morgan telling me I owe this much money when I'm like, how is it even possible? I was like, I'm going to freaking figure this out. And I realized like, it's actually not that hard of a math equation. It's like, what is my profit that I get that month? What's my tax bracket? And let me go save that.   Morgan Hamon (03:00) Thank you.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (03:16) pay your quarterly tax payments. And then what I love is when, cause I put myself in the highest tax bracket, some years I'm going to be a little bit higher, some years I'm going be a little bit lower, like it's going to flush out. But if I'm saving my max amount that I would be having to pay in taxes every single month, I'm like, it's not that hard. Like you literally just take it, put it in a savings account, I put it in a high yield, so I'm even making money on it there. What's amazing is at the end of the year, I get my W2,   Morgan Hamon (03:32) Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (03:41) like refund, if you will, because we realize I have over-saved throughout the year. I also put in there like buckets, because I realized for me, Morgan, it wasn't just the tax that was hitting me. It was the SEP IRA that I had to pay. It was charitable contributions I was paying. It was end of year bonuses. And all of that, it's not taxes. I think you get hit with all of those at the end of the year. It's like you're trying to put these, then you've got your Roth IRA that you're trying to like put those in. And it's like all these things are money and it's all accumulating at one time.   Morgan Hamon (03:43) Mm-hmm.   Okay.   Kiera Dent (04:11) versus figuring out how much you really are gonna pay, breaking it down into buckets, saving for it, and then I love it. My money at the end of the year, whatever I don't pay in taxes, because yeah, it's a big number, whatever, you're just going to pay it. That's part of having an amazing, thriving business. But then my slush because I over-saved, that becomes my refund, that becomes Keira's money of like, sweet, what are we gonna do on this because I've already paid tax. Now I can take that.   Morgan Hamon (04:14) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (04:37) Now I can go buy the things I want to buy. can put it in retire. I can put it wherever I want it to go. ⁓ but I have it to our peace of mind. When I get my, like this year, my CPA can be like, wow, Kara, you like, you have this. And I was like, rock on. Like you're not stressed about it, but that takes discipline every month. I'm literally like, Hey, how much do we have put that profit over in our savings every quarter? You're making those quarterly payments. ⁓ it is being strategic. is like.   Morgan Hamon (04:52) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (05:06) You were on a call the other day with some of our doctors and like, so Kiera, how like there are you when you do your meetings at your house? And I'm like, I crossed my T's down my eyes. I don't like this game. Like I do Airbnb. I look at all my rental comps around me. I saved that every year. It's in a folder. All the things are in the calendar with me and the other people. I have an agenda. I send that over to my CPA. I just don't like to play in the game of gray. But I think those are the pieces that help you. And then you just maximize.   Morgan Hamon (05:16) Thank you.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (05:34) But Morgan, I don't know. think I've just learned that's also part of the success tax of being successful. Like this is what it is. And I think that being a business owner, the discipline of saving your money and not spending it all because we think like, should get this cause I'm a high earner. No, like there's still tax games that we play. There's different ways to minimize it. But realizing like I need to be disciplined here. I think if you can be disciplined there, it also stems to your team. It stems to your leadership. It stems to your physical health.   Morgan Hamon (05:39) It is.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (06:04) It stems through   so many other areas in your life that I think like talk about a blessing of taxes that we actually get this benefit.   Morgan Hamon (06:07) Yes.   It,   I agree. And you do have to be, you do have to be disciplined. I know. I know. I also, I'll share a personal, I'll share a personal experience and kind of how I view tax because I very happily write those checks. You know, I write the same ones as our doctors do, but so back when I got out of the Navy, my family and I, so my parents, my brother and myself, we all chipped in and bought a real estate company.   Kiera Dent (06:13) Even though I hate it, Morgan, don't take me wrong. I still hate taxes. Morgan, tell me the secrets.   Morgan Hamon (06:36) back in 2005, real estate was happening. It was all in, all chips on the table. Well, guess what? 2009, everyone remember what happened in 2009? So, I mean, it was bad. It was horrific. 2009, my tax bill was zero. Zero. But do you think I was coming home saying, honey, look at this, zero, woohoo, check this out. I got no tax.   Kiera Dent (07:04) day.   Morgan Hamon (07:05) No, I'm sitting in a room and looking at the wall like how am going to face my kids telling them dad can't keep a roof over their head? How did my life get this screwed up? I paid no income tax, but those are not good times. That's not a period. And so right after that is when my dad and I started HD Accounting Group. But those days were like not my fondest memories even though I had zero tax liability. Fast forward a bunch of years, I've enjoyed a lot of success and I write some big checks to the government and I don't care.   My life is so much better. got kids college paid for, no debt. My life is good. And yeah, they are some big checks. I mean, let's face it, they're not my favorite things to write. Nobody likes it. But my life is just exponentially better. So when you're paying tax, you're making good money. I don't know, maybe boil it down to that.   Kiera Dent (07:55) I would agree with you.   which thank you for sharing because I think we, I agree. I don't want to have a year where I'm paying $0 to taxes. Cause that means that when you said zero and I'm like, we had a bad year. That's like a real bad year. Like as a business owner, you start to realize like that actually is not a good year. ⁓ But I think for that, ⁓ it's the discipline. And I found for me what's cut the stress out as an employer and as a business owner, not CPA, that's Morgan the world. That's not my world is when I have   Morgan Hamon (08:09) That's... ⁓   And now...   Kiera Dent (08:28) money and I'm disciplined and I save it because you still have profit afterwards. So it's not like you're not taking anything home every month. You're just being disciplined that that money for tax you save then I have the money and I'm like the pain I think comes from not having the money and the fear of where am I going to come up with the six figures when I've already spent it. I think that's more of why people hate taxes just like people hate root canals. They don't actually hate the root canal. They hate the pain leading up to it. We hate the pain of not having the money set aside.   Morgan Hamon (08:33) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm. Yeah.   Yes   Well.   Exactly. And let's tie this real specifically to the world you and I serve, our dentists. What really creates a lot of confusion and adds to the emotion is that, most of our clients have a practice note, a big one. And they don't always realize, look, when you make your loan payment, that is not a tax deduction, right?   Kiera Dent (09:22) not   just   Morgan Hamon (09:22) When you borrow the   money, we deduct everything you're going to buy, but then over time when you pay that back, you don't get it deducted again. So if your debt service on your practice loan is $100,000 a year, which we see often, you're paying income tax on it. So if you made $500,000 and $100,000 went back to the bank, you're living on $400,000 but paying tax on $500,000. And that is   That can be shocking and that's why you'll hear, and that applies to just both financial accounting and tax, that question of, my accountant said I made this much money. That can't possibly be the case. I just logged into the bank. What are they talking about? It's that debt service. That money's gone, but it's not a deduction. The other thing that makes it, any tax planning for dentist challenging is just the volatility in the month to month profit.   And I think there's a misperception out there, hey, look, my accountant is keeping my books up to date every month, right? And so if we get to the end of, let's say the end of September, and we can, hey, September 30, this is the exact profit, that does not equate to a granular, precise tax calculation because we have to, all your tax rate is dependent on total annual household income. If there's four months in the year that haven't happened yet, we gotta,   Kiera Dent (10:16) Amen.   Morgan Hamon (10:46) We got to estimate and it's subject to change. Maybe they were struggling in May and they said, you know, I'm calling Kiera, fine, I'm going to do it. We're going to get this thing figured out. And so then by November, they're killing it and everything's up 30%, 40%. Well, guess what's also going to be up? Your estimated payments are going to be higher, right? And so it's volatile.   and it's not an exact science. with any tax planning, those quarter estimated payments are trying to keep you in the hunt. And you alluded to that by having your buckets. Just realize there will be a settle up at the end of the year when it all fleshes out, because all we can do is estimate along the way. Try to keep it as close as we can. But I'm with you. I make those payments quarterly. I don't put my head in the sand because it'll just get bigger.   Kiera Dent (11:33) Well, I'm curious, Morgan, this is like Kara's nerdy side of me that I don't understand. So help me. And I hope this comes across respectful of the CPA world. To me, I feel like why don't CPAs at the end of every month, you know my profit, you know what I did that month. So yes, there's the estimated, but why not just give me like, the only thing I've thought of is maybe my tax bracket could change, but I'm like, why not estimate every month approximately what I need to save for taxes?   Morgan Hamon (11:43) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Kiera Dent (12:03) So I can at least put that away monthly. Help me understand the psychology of that, because I don't.   Morgan Hamon (12:06) So, oh, trust me,   we've thought about this every which way. And I'm never done. I tweak our tax planning process every year. So to your point, like you could look at last year's tax return. So there's two figures to look at. There's your marginal tax rate, which is your whatever bracket, your highest, so the highest of 37.   But then there's what's called an effective, and that's just the average, right? If you look at total income and total tax, what's the average? So you could look at your last year's tax return and maybe your combined federal and state income tax was, call it 30%. So you could say, whatever my profit is times 0.3 is what I had to put away. So you could do that, but that's inherently going to be inaccurate.   because you will not have the same effective tax rate this year unless you have like a carbon copy and it'll be different. A lot of volatility. The other thing, it's a very equipment heavy industry as you know, and people do go buy equipment. And so if we, if say an accountant says, put whatever your profit is times 0.3, put that away, but then they get in and maybe they really do. Maybe their practice was... ⁓   Kiera Dent (13:20) Mm-hmm.   Morgan Hamon (13:31) you know, plum for eight ops, but they're equipped for five and it's time to fit those other three. Well, that's some really nice tax deductions there, like dollar for dollar. Well, that's really going to come down. And so that estimate's going to be out the window, like really quickly. You know, we've had times where I think of this story, something you don't tell stories. We had a client, this was a few years back, where they sent us an invoice. I can't remember what they bought.   Kiera Dent (13:38) and   Morgan Hamon (14:00) It was big, right? It was $120,000. They sent an invoice, not an email like I'm thinking about this. They sent an invoice. So we booked it. 120K deduction, did the tax plan, the works. Well, it comes time to do the tax return. And we're saying, hey, we keep asking for the loan paperwork on this claim. We don't get it. So finally, hey, look, we really want to get this tax return done. Can you send us that loan paperwork? And he's like, oh, I changed my mind.   I didn't buy that. And we're like, oh, let's put 120K of income back on top. You owe, I think it was like 40,000. And they're like, how can this be? I'm like, you sent us an invoice. Think how mad you'd be if we hadn't booked it. And I just tell that kind of story. Like equipment purchases in Q4, it's all out the window at that   Kiera Dent (14:37) Bye.   Yeah.   Yeah!   Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.   Morgan Hamon (14:58) So   it's very volatile. So to kind of circle all way back to the beginning, just for some basic tax planning, I knew for me, like federal and effective, it's like 35%. And I just planned for that. And then there's a settle up. And if I owe a bit, it's because we killed it. And I need to actually celebrate that and not be cranky about it. And if I get some money back, maybe,   Kiera Dent (15:13) Mm-hmm.   you   Morgan Hamon (15:27) Maybe it just didn't end up as good as I thought or whatever. We're accountants. We don't have like, Xerox machines to write off. I got like a laptop. So, I mean, we're kind of limited on that. So, ⁓ those are some limitations inherent in tax planning for specific for the dental industry, the volatility and month-to-month profit and the high amount of equipment that's involved, which involves some instantaneous significant tax deductions.   Kiera Dent (15:32) Right.   and   Sure, no, that makes sense. And I think for me, it's always like, okay, there's profit, there's expenses. ⁓ If I'm gonna go use that money for expenses, then I'm going to take my tax amount. So obviously it's going to reduce my tax bill by that dollar amount. I can actually pull portions out of that money I've saved to pay for my equipment potentially if I need to. But just curious on that, because I've always, I'm like, it's a simple equation. Here's my profit. This is how much my tax bracket probably is. But also maybe you guys don't want them saving more than they need to because then people get angry.   Morgan Hamon (16:01) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   The truth.   Yeah.   Well,   people, it can get emotional either way, right? If they get a big refund, they're like, wait a minute, I could have had this in my high yield savings account. So we really do try to keep it as close as we can given the constraints of this kind three-dimensional moving target. What I have told doctors in the past, if we think about, let's say they've got an S-Corp, so on a reasonable W2, we got some holding through that W2, but they should still be taking the majority of the money home via profit distribution, okay?   Kiera Dent (16:26) that   Exactly.   Morgan Hamon (16:53) Have a look at last year's tax return. If you don't know how to find it, let us know. Keep it simple. If it's 30 % or 20, it's 28 points, okay, round it to 30. What I think every business owner should do, okay, at the end of the month or quarter, however often you want to do it, you look at how much money has accumulated in the operating account, what is my chosen desired minimum cash reserve, and whatever has accumulated, distribute it.   Kiera Dent (17:06) Mm-hmm.   Mm-hmm.   Morgan Hamon (17:24) And take, let's say there's $20,000 extra in there, right? And let's just say your effective rate's a third of that. Well, take six or 7,000 and just put it in, like you said, Kiera, your savings bucket. And then save that so then when your accountant says, hey, it's time for your Q3 payment, you tap that money. And I think that's just a simple thing that...   Kiera Dent (17:42) Mm-hmm.   Morgan Hamon (17:53) habit you could get into, for me personally in our business, we always did that quarterly. And we'd take a distribution quarterly and I would just lop off the top, put it away and treat it like I had never had this and I would send it right off to the government. And that way I wasn't playing catch up so much. In the accounting world, I don't quite have the volatility that dentists have, but it's still, that habit pattern. It's that discipline of doing it.   Kiera Dent (18:20) Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.   Yeah. No, that's super helpful. And Morgan, this is why I love to talk about it. Because it's like, hey, how can I refine? As we were talking about on that leadership, how can I refine? How can I make this just a little bit better? How can I learn a little bit more of the nuggets? How can I be smarter on my prep work for me emotionally? Because some people are just fine. They'll just like, I have a million buckets. I love my buckets. I love to know what this money is saved for.   Morgan Hamon (18:42) Hehehe.   Kiera Dent (18:45) My financial advisor teases me, my CPA teases me. I'm okay with it because I'm like, sweet, I know how much money I've got here. I know what I can buy here. My husband loves like just one big fund. And I'm like, but then how do know how much I can spend? Like I don't want to overspend or underspend. So everyone's different. So things are just going through it. Things are the psychology of it, the tax planning pieces, how the leadership and profitability connect to each other. Morgan, you guys are such an incredible CPA firm. I love that you're specifically only dentists. I tried to have you guys work with me you said, no, I'm not a dentist. So   Morgan Hamon (18:51) Mm-hmm.   You   huh.   Kiera Dent (19:14) I love that you are so niche. It was great, I loved it. But if people are curious, how do they work with you? It's Austin & Noelle. They're a couple and he proposes and she says yes! He promises a big holiday wedding, surrounded by family, at Riverbottom Ranch. She's like how are you gonna do that? They book out 2 years in advanced. He's like well good thing I got the Christmas day slot that was available. Cut to Austin's brother, Seth. He's really going through it. His girlfriend broke up with him and now he's just sitting on the couch in his boxers and guitar, imagining her putting up his stocking. Just then, their other brother Tom and his girlfriend Liz come in and they have big news. They're getting married too!!! What a Thanksgiving indeed! What could go wrong?Well, when Mom asks the wedding days, they both say CHRISTMAS DAY AT RIVERBOTTOM RANCH at the same time. WHOA! They figure out what happened - they both called to confirm the Wright wedding on Christmas day. But they'll make it work. two weddings, one day, what could go wrong? Well - up first, Austin & Tom argue about who gets grandma's ring. But the brides aren't letting all this nonsense get them down. They're going dress hunting, it's a whole thing. And for some reason, Seth is alway there, just looking sad and drinking champaign. Noelle is sick of the brothers fighting, so she tells them that the brothers are going on a bachelors trip so that they can stop fighting. They're also all gonna go register for wedding gifts together. The fishing trip bachelor party is a disaster because the lake that Seth picks out is no longer a lake. The electric car is out of battery. And Seth didn't even pack snakcs. They get to a bar and Seth decides to sing some karaoke to try to get over his breakup. His brothers join him to try to help him feel better but the crowd hates it. A giant fight breaks out. But that bonds them back together. They plug the car into a barn and sleep inside of it. They wake up the next day, get their tuxes on, and they rush to the ranch! When they get there, they're greeted by grandma. She gives them a gift - it's wedding bands for both of them that came from her wedding ring, melted down. It was Seth's idea. And just like that, it's wedding time. Seth walks Noelle down the aisle. And the joint wedding begins. Seth's ex is there and he sits next to her. She says she thinks there's been a misunderstanding and she grabs his hand much to Seth's joy. After the wedding, they talk and she's like I was at my internship in a remote location...you should've known that. I'd never bail on you. He's like I wrote you a song. Gotta be honest... it's an absolute bop. Everyone dances and I just can't get over how good this song was. and that's the movie! 

You won't hear any of the music they're talking about because of streaming rules so good luck understanding. Gio introduces a new song, contrasting it with one Willie shared last week. A caller debates the believability of Jim Harbaugh catching 22 foul balls versus Joe Benigno hitting 4 holes-in-one. Gio once gave Joe rolling papers and a porno for Christmas. CLo returns, discussing new summer music, sharing audio from Al's vacation, and noting Marco Balletti's last-minute Infinity Sports Network hosting gig. Sal Licata's outburst at a Juan Soto hater makes Gio question why people seek his comfort amidst rumors. Gio reveals his old mullet hair from a 2021 boat party, recalling Spike Eskin's prank. A caller's dream about BT being ejected from various places leads Gio to ponder shared dreams.

Hour 1 For a "Feel Good Friday," Gio and Jerry discuss player investment in skyrocketing salaries, with many players now prioritizing money over winning. Unlike most teams, the Knicks are praised for consistent effort. Gio believes losing impacts some players more, citing Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor as caring more than Juan Soto. Jerry agrees players can't match fan intensity, and no championship tops the first. Gio laments that most players once prioritized winning, but now prioritize money. CLo's update is delayed by reality TV talk. CLo asks Gio about getting sick from licking his golf ball, which Gio is glad was legitimate. Baseball returns tonight. Jim Harbaugh remains a character. CLo shares a golf highlight with odd background noise. In the final segment, Gio questions Peter Schwartz's lack of amusement at Shane Gillis's ESPYs monologue and criticizes Joe Benigno's frequent complaining. Hour 2 Note: You don't hear the music. Blame streaming service rules. Gio shares new music. A caller asks about Jim Harbaugh's 22 foul balls vs. Joe Benigno's 4 holes-in-one. Gio gifted Joe rolling papers and a porno for Christmas. CLo returns, shares new music, and Al's vacation audio. Marco Balletti pinch-hit for Infinity Sports Network. Sal Licata got upset with a Juan Soto hater. Gio displays his old mullet hair and recalls a 2021 boat party prank by Spike Eskin. A caller dreamt of BT being ejected from places, a common dream. Hour 3 The hour begins with dreams and nightmares, including listener calls and a sleepwalker's experience. A Princeton psychology professor analyzes Gio's dreams. CLo updates on Willie Randolph's surprise at not managing again, with Gio recalling hearing of Willie's firing in an LA hotel shower from Joe Benigno. Sal interviewed astronaut Michael Massimino. CLo also has British Open news. Finally, Gio and Jerry discuss CBS canceling “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” with Gio predicting more high-priced talent and shows will disappear due to unsustainable financial models. Hour 4 Gio and Jerry discuss a viral Coldplay concert video involving a CEO and HR head's affair. Gio believes their panicked reaction, not the kiss itself, caused the uproar, and he disliked kiss cams. They agree "bad publicity" is untrue. CLo provides his final update, discussing the Pebble Beach trip and Al and Eddie's non-golfing plans. CLo shares a recurring dream and "Ripped From the Headlines." Moment of The Day: Eddie's song. Gio wants to play an explicit band for Jerry. The show concludes with an update on the viral video and listener calls.

Not today! Kerry and her daughters are there and I'm pretty convinced Alexandrea doesn't wanna be there. Rob tells his girlfriend Donna about meeting Paul and Andrew on the ship but obviously doesn't tell her about what they talked about. Cut to Paul trying to get Tyler and Kimberley in on the wedding ceremony. So they show everyone getting like 7 seconds to take a picture with everyone. Hynes is down there just goofing off. Rob and Donna come in and Paul is like ROB - making him look awesome in front of Donna. Paige gives Tyler a bracket with her name in it which is wild. Afterwards, Alexandrea was like you should make another bracelet with your number in it. Gail and Alicia meet Betty Hynes who is just the best. They ask her “is Tyler the same on screen and off” and Betty says “he's the bad boy for Hallmark for a reason”. Betty is a star, Paige and Alexandrea are hanging out, and she tells her about moving back to California and how she is nervous to tell mom. Remember Nate and his grandmas? Nate is just soaking up people telling him happy birthday, and I can't stress this enough - it's not his birthday. They're shopping at the hallmark store when Erin Cahill walks up and Erin is like Nate you're the best, happy birthday. And they bond over their mutual love of their grandmas, and Erin buys them everything they have in their hands! Lori and her sister talk about how to get their Christmas screenplay in front of someone at Hallmark. Donna is in the gym now and of course Nikki DeLoach is there. What are the odds?! And they bond. She talks about her brain surgery, Nikki talks about a rabbi she really likes. It's sweet. Gail and Alicia are hanging out and Alicia is like hey I booked us an ATV excision in the Bahamas. Gail is not thrilled by this. But she agrees to give it a shot. Rob and Donna get together for drinks with Kerry and her daughters and it's a whole thing. They bond over surgeries and then Donna and Kerry's daughter go to the bar and  Rob tells Kerry his plan and she says her daughter will do Donna's makeup. Plan is really coming together! The script sisters magically bumped in Benjamin Ayers and Sarah Drew and she pitched them the script and they love it. She asks if they will read it and they just kinda stare at each other. Gail gets on the ATV and chickens out. So Kerry and her daughters go to swim with the pigs which is run by Shane Gillis doing a Bahamian accent. Afterward, Paige tells her mom she wants to move to California. She's not thrilled. And then episode ends with Rob, ring box in hand on the beach of the Bahamas, getting ready to propose.
