So, my attending looks at me and gives me this smirk and he turns back to the patient and asks, ‘Was it a green apple or a red apple?'”(10:32) (Dr.Fayez) “Because it was so large, we decided we're not even gonna mess with it. There are ways that you could actually remove foreign objects. So, now I guess you're wondering, ‘How is that even possible?' Well, let's just break it down.” (04:05) (Dr. Brian) “Most of the studies used 12 mg [of capsaicin] and they were given about forty-five minutes before the exercise so it gives the body time to absorb it and get it into the system. And, there was one study that used a pretty low dose of just 1.2 mg. So, what were the results? In this one study where they ran 1,500 meters, it actually did reduce the time to get to 1,500 meters. So it actually made the runners faster.” (05:08) (Dr. Brian) “Taking about a 12 mg capsule about forty-five minutes before doing weight training also increased the number of repetitions that they could do at seventy-five percent of their max with a standardized rest interval.” (07:02) (Dr. Brian) “Interestingly enough, there are several mechanisms and I'm going to give you the three top ones. So, the first mechanism is that [Capsaicin] is increasing, very likely, calcium release in the muscles. And so, the more calcium that gets released, the increased contractability and strength you get out of the muscle. Also, it looks like it increases fatty acid oxidation, another source of energy and increases the amount of power out of the muscles. It's not a secret that mental wellness is on everyone's minds these days. It is one of the most prioritized topics within our lifestyle design community when it comes to values and life intentions. Phil and I are in the same boat. We all prioritize and actively work on our mental and holistic wellbeing. But where we sometimes feel a little at a loss is how we help our children design mental wellness into their lives. So today, we talk with Dr. Melanie McNally, a Gen Z psychologist, who spends her time trying to help as many tweens, teens and their parents navigate this very topic. She recently advised the White House on the current state of youth mental health and is actively creating solutions to help curve the negative downturn. Michelle Kakade) In part 2 of our chat, we dig deep to see what keeps Michelle motivated when she's injured, on a very long run; what her passions are, and what she did during the lockdown. Have you ever had a goal but not sure where to start or wonder if you'd ever accomplish it? Or have you ever had fear of failing stop you from pursuing your goal. Well, we're going to take you for a ride so that you can take action even when you're not sure if you can do it. That's what Michelle Kakade did as she shares how she transformed her identity from being tied to others (by being a daughter, wife, and then mother) to being the Guiness world record holder for the fastest time to run the Indian Golden Quadrilateral, 5968.4 km ( 2709 miles). If you do the math, that's 142 marathons within 194 days. The funniest part is that she doesn't consider herself a runner. Crazy right? Did she want to quit at points? You betcha… but she didn't. She is an everyday Wonder Woman who chose not to stop while being fueled with determination. In spite of suffering along the way, Michelle is a person who doesn't give up easily and has the capacity to know her limitations especially when it came to listening to her body (and specifically her menstruation but more about that in the episode). Here's a note from Dafne: My journey to this coaching career began with a prayer I prayed in 2006 “God, would you please use this unbearable pain for something good?” I prayed that prayer because in 2005 I was diagnosed with severe depression after seeing a doctor because I was having multiple panic attacks each week. Six months later I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Six months after that I learned I had hashimoto's thyroiditis. Six more months passed and our 2 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune condition that CANNOT be managed with diet alone). The following year my mother-in-law (who I loved dearly) was in cancer treatment. So within the span of a little under two years our family was facing multiple serious diagnoses.
