Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we slither into our Top 5 Snakes in movies and TV, and shed our skins with two slinky features: the gritty 2023 Hong Kong action flick The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon, and a far more family-friendly offering in Patchwork Pals.Top 5 Snakes in Film & TVKaa – The Jungle Book (1967/2016) Hypnotic eyes, silky voice, and a penchant for wrapping himself around unsuspecting jungle creatures—Kaa is the ultimate slithering villain. Whether voiced by Sterling Holloway or Scarlett Johansson, he leaves a lasting impression.Nagini – Harry Potter series Voldemort's devoted reptilian sidekick and eventual Horcrux, Nagini is both a terrifying presence and a tragic figure with a deeper backstory revealed in Fantastic Beasts.Snake Plissken – Escape from New York (1981) OK, not a literal snake—but Kurt Russell's eye-patched anti-hero is too iconic to leave off. He's venomous in attitude if not species. The Basilisk – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) A giant snake living in Hogwarts' plumbing system? Sure. Just don't look it in the eyes.Sir Hiss – Disney's Robin Hood (1973) This snooty, sycophantic serpent floats around in a basket and gets on everyone's nerves—just the sort of snake you love to hiss at.Main Feature: The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon (2023)Directed by Wong Ching-po, this brutal neo-noir action thriller tells the story of Mok, a terminally ill gangster who finds out he has only days to live. With nothing left to lose, he sets out on a violent spree to go out in a blaze of infamy. But as his legend grows, so does the bounty on his head—and he becomes prey for a series of contract killers with styles as flamboyant as they are deadly. With its hyper-stylized violence, morally bankrupt characters, and pitch-black humour, this one is not for the faint of heart. It's a fever dream of bloodshed, masculinity, and fatalism, with moments that almost border on the surreal. The action choreography is tight, the visuals are stylish, and the tone walks a fine line between grindhouse and art film. There are snakes here—not just the metaphorical kind—and they're not easy to charm.Kids TV: Patchwork PalsIn need of something to balance out the darkness? Enter Patchwork Pals, the gentle animated show aimed at preschoolers. Each short episode centres on a different soft toy animal who has a problem—and must find a creative, cooperative solution. The snake in Patchwork Pals is a colourful, friendly creature who isn't scary at all—just a bit stuck and in need of help from their pals.Wholesome, sweet, and ideal for very young viewers, it's the kind of thing that soothes minds and teaches emotional intelligence, problem-solving, and kindness.Whether you're charmed or chilled, this week's show is full of bite.

Hi, Void. This was a rough one. Have you ever seen a movie so bad it erased itself from your mind? You have?! So, you've seen Fantastic Beasts, the Secrets of Dumbledore too! What secrets? No idea. This is a common theme for the entire podcast. Positive moments: Theseus being hot, Mads Mikkelsen (also hot), and . . . that's about it. Jacob again should've been the hero, not the wet blanket that is Newt Scamander. Subplots overlooked: Nazis on the rise in Europe, wizards being dragged into muggle wars, Jacob learning magic, and Dumbledore's DEAD sister! Instead, we got Creedance giving "Mom, no one understands me!" Ultimately, we call J.K. on her BS and label her a false ally and a TERRIBLE storyteller. We have Avada Cadavra readied for the moment anyone mentions a Fantastic Beasts 4. We will bury you.

Join Greg Alba and Tara Erickson as they journey into the magical world of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). Directed by David Yates, the fifth installment follows Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe, Swiss Army Man, Now You See Me 2) as he returns to Hogwarts for his tumultuous fifth year, where darkness looms both inside and outside the castle walls. As the Ministry of Magic denies Voldemort's return (Ralph Fiennes, Schindler's List, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Harry finds himself isolated and burdened by secrets. Determined to take control of his destiny, he rallies his fellow students to form Dumbledore's Army—a courageous group led by the brilliant Hermione Granger (Emma Watson, Beauty and the Beast, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and the loyal Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint, Knock at the Cabin, Snatch). Meanwhile, the ruthless Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton, Shakespeare in Love, Chicken Run) imposes strict and dangerous rules at Hogwarts, igniting further conflict. Other classic characters & performances include Alan Rickman as Severus Snape (Die Hard, Love Actually), Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall (Downton Abbey, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Dracula), & MORE! And if you're looking to keep the magic alight, the full chronology of the films is thus: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022). Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss what would be on a hypothetical Fantastic Beasts TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:·      1:52 Dumbledore's past. He is such a deep character, and the struggles of his childhood are a big part of who he is and why he is so committed to defeating Grindelwald. If we could understand just a little bit more about his past, we might be able to appreciate his character more.·      7:49 Newt's Childhood. We catch just a sneak peak of this in the Crimes of Grindelwald, and it is gold to see Newt as a child. He is very committed to protecting magical creatures, and doing good wherever he goes. We don't need as much time as Dumbledore, so seeing him for just a few minutes could give a new edge to his rock solid morals.·      11:39 Creedence's backstory. He is a very emotionally damaged character, and we aren't given the best backstory as to why this is. We can understand him for the most part at the end, but I would rather we have the chance to understand him from the beginning.·      16:57 Tina and Queenie before Newt. These two are as close as can be, and that bond breaking is one of the core parts of the story. If we could have a clearer window into just how strong these sisters are drawn together, it would mean more when Queenie eventually chooses to join Grindelwald. ·      21:32 Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship. Without a doubt, their relationship is one of the driving factors that keep the story going. Some of the most compelling scenes are where we see their pain of separation. We need more scenes like the one where Dumbledore pulls the curtain off the Mirror of Erised and sees Grindelwald.·      25:11 Jacob's bakery. There are two moments in time that would give us a better perspective on Jacob. The first is right after the events of the first film, and the second is before the third film. One is him feeling great, getting with Queenie and living great. The second is when he is living without Queenie and he is a mess. The contrast between these two moments combined with how tense their relationship is when their paths cross will show us how difficult it was for Queenie to go and how painful is was for Jacob to stay. Having anything you want to hear or say? Don't judge a book by its cover - this episode is about how looks can be deceiving in Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. We're joined by Eizabeth Baird Hardy (Mayland Community College) to discuss her chapter in The Ivory Tower, Harry Potter, and Beyond, "Muggle Worthy: Deceptive Exteriors and Outsized Interiors in the Wizarding World." There is an implicit lesson in the wizarding world - one understood by magical children but that needs to be learned by newcomers like Harry - not to trust architecture. Staircases move, paintings hide passageways, unassuming pubs contain entrances to bustling magical streets. People, too, are more than they appear, like the enormous but gentle Hagrid. Some spaces in Potter seem sensitive to emotional or psychological factors, such as the Room of Requirement, which seems to work in a similar way to a boggart in terms of understanding a person. While the former senses what a user needs, the latter senses what they fear. The Room of Requirement does not appear to judge and can be used for noble or nefarious purposes, whether to fight Death Eaters or let them into the castle. What about portable, extendable spaces? Hermione has her beaded bag and Newt Scamander his suitcase full of creatures, both of which serve as metaphors for the complex personalities under the exteriors that might be overlooked. Spaces like these are also seen in Mary Poppins, Discworld, and The Chronicles of Narnia. Fantasy itself feels like a space where we cross a threshold from the mundane into a world of possibility.

Sometimes if we take a look at how animals were percieved in the past, it can give us new insight into our perceptions of animals today.  Join Meg and Trev to discuss how people in Medieval times in Europe perceived animals wild, domesticated and fantastical. We look at how the dominant paradigms of the times (Paganism and Christianity) affected how different animals were treated, the unique relationships peope of the time had with animals, how the different classes of people viewed animals, and take a look at human art from the Medieval period in the form of colourful depictions of animals in books known as Bestiaries, animals in music and also animals in stories and legends of the time.  Can we say for sure that Medieval times were more brutal for animals than they are now, or is this a myth? What unexpected animal was closely associated with Christain divinity in the Middle Ages? How did people's perceptions of animals change as Christianity became the dominant religion? In the Goblet of Fire we are introduced to schools outside of Hogwarts for the first time. And while Hogwarts remains a top choice for many aspiring witches and wizards, the truth is that there exists a VAST world of magical education beyond the familiar walls of Hogwarts. There may not be as many options as say..Muggle schools..That much is obvious, but according to JK Rowling there are actually 11 major wizarding schools worldwide. “The number of countries that have their own magical school is minuscule compared to those that do not. This is because the wizarding populations of most countries choose the option of home-schooling. Occasionally, too, the magical community in a given country is tiny or far-flung and correspondence courses have been found a more cost-effective means of educating the young. “There are eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide, all of which are registered with the International Confederation of Wizards. Anyone wishing to know whether there is an approved magical school in their region should address an owl enquiry to the International Confederation of Wizards, Educational Office.” During the primary Harry Potter books we learn about a couple of these schools like Durmtrang and Beauxbatons. And in the Fantastic Beasts series we learn a fair bit about a wizarding school in AMERICA named Ilvermorny. But.. What about the other 7?  As of writing this, only EIGHT of the 11 major wizarding schools mentioned by Rowling have been confirmed, which leaves the door wide open for speculation. She first introduced the figure of ‘11' schools back in 2016, but for reasons unknown has yet to name the 3 ‘mystery' schools.  So, where ARE these 3 unidentified schools? What language do they speak? And what sort of magic do they specialize in? Today we're going to be discussing all of that AND MORE as we discuss the 11 major wizarding schools. Send us a Text Message. In this episode, we discuss parallel characters from Harry Potter in Fantastic Beasts. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:·      1:57 Newt and Dumbledore. But isn't Dumbledore also in Fantastic Beasts? Yes, but they actually aren't as similar as Newt is to the Dumbledore in Harry Potter. They both have a simple outlook on life. Dumbledore has had over one hundred years to look back and understand the world. Newt doesn't care what others think of him which frees him to be his own person, just like Dumbledore.·      10:07 Snape and Queenie. Both of them are loose with their choice of side. Snape is fighting for both Dumbledore and Voldemort, and Queenie switches sides to Grindelwald. However, the thing that makes them so similar is love. Both of them are fighting for love, and switch sides for the same reason. ·      15:58 Neville and Jacob. This is one of the strongest parallels. The reason they are so similar is because of their character arcs. Both start out as finding their footing, not really being a great help to their side. Eventually, they find their place in the world and rise above to a position of strength and power.·      22:29 Leta and Draco. This is perhaps a bit more obscure, but there are certainly similarities. Both are outcasts and have a shaky place in their families. They don't really have anyone who they can completely trust and confide in, and they are consistently feeling down. The cherry on top is the end of their arcs. Both stand up to their oppressors and fight against evil.·      26:24 Theseus and Percy. Both are older brothers and have careers which they care for very much. They both feel like they have to set an example and be the responsible older brother. They also both fight with their families and aren't always on great terms all the time, but in the end, they both set aside their differences and realize that fighting evil is more important than a spat.Having anything you want to hear or say? In the Middle Ages, animals were often the means for survival and the source of great wealth. No wonder then that in the medieval imagination, animals are not just animals. Animals were thought to have traits and characteristics that meant that they could be sorted into moral categories - good and bad, righteous and evil - that dominate the Christian imagination. Ants could be monsters and panthers could be your friend, dog-headed men were as real as elephants and whales were as sneaky as wolves. In this episode of Gone Medieval, Dr. Eleanor Janega is joined by Hana Videen, author of The Deorhord: An Old English Bestiary to discuss animals, language, and how - when it comes to thinking about the animal kingdom - we actually have a lot in common with our Medieval ancestors. This episode was edited by Ella Blaxill and produced by Joseph Knight.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. Laurah's traveling all month — so while we cook up some strange new offerings for you, please enjoy this episode from our archives. West Virginia isn't the only region to boast its very own Mothman; since the mid-20 century, Chicago and the Lake Michigan area has had reports of flying humanoids, and those sightings have only picked up since 2011. Why have sightings of the Chicago or Lake Michigan Mothman increased, and what's behind the mysterious wings in the sky?  Hosted and Written by Laurah Norton Researched by Bryan Worters and Laurah Norton  Produced and Script-Edited by Maura Currie  Engineered by Brandon Schexnayder  Interested in advertising on our show?
