Join Graham, Jamie, and special guest Declan Clark, a North West football expert, on this episode of "By Far The Greatest Team" podcast, as they dive deep into the legacy of Sam Allardyce's Bolton Wanderers. Under Allardyce's tenure, Bolton Wanderers underwent a remarkable transformation from a struggling side to a formidable force in the Premier League. The club's yo-yo existence prior to Allardyce's arrival painted a picture of inconsistency, but his pragmatic and direct style of play, coupled with shrewd signings and astute management, saw Bolton rise to prominence. From leading them to the playoffs to securing promotion to the Premier League, Allardyce's impact was undeniable. Despite being labeled as a long-ball team, his tactics were more nuanced, incorporating a mix of flair players and experienced professionals like Gary Speed and Kevin Nolan. The podcast explores Bolton's ambitious forays into European football, including their UEFA Cup campaign in the 2005-2006 season, where they showcased their prowess on the continental stage. However, despite their success in challenging for European spots and making cup runs, Bolton never clinched a major trophy under Allardyce's leadership. The discussion delves into the legacy of Allardyce's Bolton, examining their consistent presence in the Premier League's top eight for four consecutive seasons and the individual brilliance of players like Jay-Jay Okocha and Youri Djorkaeff. Yet, the absence of silverware leaves Bolton teetering on the edge of greatness, their potential overshadowed by missed opportunities.Tune in as Graham, Jamie, and Declan dissect the rise, near-glory, and enduring legacy of Sam Allardyce's Bolton Wanderers in this captivating episode of "By Far The Greatest Team" podcast. If you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!Or visit our website at www.thegreatestteam.co

It's February 11th - welcome to the latest edition of the pod, after the Reds get past Burnley to go back to the top of the league and now have a week before Brentford. I'm Paul and I am joined by Lingerr, Haitham and  We'll talk about the Reds before we are done but after a great tournament we need to talk more about AFCON. Part One - reflections on the tournament: Context, your AFCON experience over the years - growing up, watching from afar here in the US? As an outsider, this one was a great spectacle, it seemed about the teams and the football, and almost no Gianni Infantino or Alexsander Ceferin is an absolute bonus. Seems like a series of upsets from an outside perspective. Lots of last minute goals and spot kick drama. Super exciting for someone not fully invested in any of the teams - must have been tough to watch if you were. Overall a more open tournament - 116 goals - 2.4 per game. Goals dried up a bit in the knock out games. What about the favorites - Senegal, Egypt, Morocco? Was that it for Mo and a chance to win AFCON? North African teams generally:( I enjoyed Cape Verde, Angola, DR Congo - how much did they exceed expectations? What about South Africa? Where did they come from? Did it help having everyone be familiar with each other? The state of club football - Morocco 84th in the world  Number of players born outside Africa - perspectives? Part two - the Final and wider: The Final - Côte D'Ivoire vs Nigeria The game itself Was it destined to be them? ‘The dead goat does not fear the night' Nigeria played up to its reputation finally didn't they? But really didn't look as good in the final Wait Alex Iwobi is Jay Jay Okocha's nephew! All those strikers - Osihmen, Chukweze (and Boniface who was injured) Does this mean anything for the 2026 World Cup? Could CIV host a World Cup? Wrap up - Liverpool - 14 wins to a deserved 20th title? We will be back with a review of the Burnley game. Thanks to Lingerr and Haitham. And thank you dear listener for joining us. 1934 was the first time an African country featured at the FIFA World Cup after Egypt qualified for the tournament in Italy. The continent would, however, not have a representative at the competition until 1970. But since then, there has been a streak of 13 straight FIFA World Cup tournaments with, at least, one African country present. 2022 makes it 14. But in all these tournaments where we've had African representation, the furthest a team from the continent has ever gone is the quarter finals. Before you think that's not so bad, compare it with the continent of Asia which has had representation in 15 World Cup tournaments and has managed to produce a country which finished in 4th place. North America, a continent which obviously does not have as much talent as Africa, even if you add Central America and the Caribbeans, has produced a country which won bronze at a World Cup tournament. And yeah, you could argue that Ghana were literally just one Suarez hand and then a penalty kick away from a 3rd or 4th place finish in 2010, but we honestly still don't think that's enough excuse for a continent blessed with that much talent. Africa should be regulars in the semis, at least. I mean, the continent is home to the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Frack Kessie, and Riyad Mahrez, and before them, it has been home to the likes of George Weah, Samuel Eto'o, Jay Jay Okocha, and Yaya Toure. But the farthest an African country has gone at the World Cup is the quarter finals? Why?

In the summer of 2002, Bolton manager Sam Allardyce was once again scouring the market for new players.Without a big budget, being resourceful had become second nature to Big Sam, often using his powers of persuasion to lure players to the Reebok Stadium. Nigeria superstar Jay-Jay Okocha was available on a free transfer after dazzling in leagues across Europe, but surely out of Bolton's reach? You tell that to Big Sam! Here, Football's Cult Heroes tells the story of how the man that mentored Ronaldinho at PSG came to lead Bolton's ‘galacticos' to the brink of the Champions League, embarrassing defenders and upsetting the elite.Team-mates speak of the “humble” captain that led by example whether on the pitch or on nights out in Manchester, journalists reveal the “business-like” character behind the entertainer image, and fans tell of the man that made Bolton cool. On this week's show we talk about flair in African football. While the continent used to be famous for players like Roger Milla and Jay Jay Okocha and the amazing things that they could do, these days there's certainly less flair in the African game, and some feel that the game is becoming too European in Africa. We look at the AFCON and assess how things were, and we hear from legends Joseph-Antoine Bell, Nwankwo Kanu and Jay Jay Okocha.
