Today we air a rerun from 2016. We'll be back next week with our end of year roundup. -- Social movements produce a huge amount of intellectual knowledge. Yet, in many academic circles, this knowledge is overlooked. Aziz Choudry spent most of his life working with social movements around the world. At the time of this interview, he was an associate professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University and visiting professor at the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg. His book Learning Activism: The Intellectual Life of Contemporary Social Movements was published in 2015 by the University of Toronto Press. All book proceeds will be donated to the Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal. Learning Activism is designed to encourage a deeper engagement with the intellectual life of activists who organize for social, political, and ecological justice. Professor Choudry was concerned with “making visible the dialectical relationship between ‘Research' and ‘organizing.'” Will Brehm spoke with Aziz Choudry in mid January 2016 about his new book. I spoke with Paul Savoie on April 21, 2022. We covered a lot of topics from being true to ourselves to connection with nature and our souls as well as finding our passion and gifts along the way of this thing called life.  BioPaul Savoie has been working as a Human Resources professional for over 12 years.  He has a Bachelor of Integrated Studies majoring in Business Administration/ Human Resources and a minor in Adult Education from the University of New Brunswick.  He also holds a Health Coach Certification from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.Growing up he would have given anything to just be "normal".  That constant internal battle of not being good enough led to alot of emotional eating - this continued up to his early twenties.Things changed for him when a friend introduced him to Kickboxing.  He fell in love with Kickboxing and experienced weight loss.  He then embarked on fitness competitions which each show became the reason to "stay on track".  Changing the physical body was easy but was not sustainable.Paul started to question more and more his purpose and that's when he came across the Health Coach Certification at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.  The program focused on how we are surrounded by energies.  This was the beginning of self reflection and acknowledging the many "layers of protection" he created since he was a child.  With a lot of self growth many blockages have been and continue to be replaced with Love. Most recently he has co-founded "TwoFeathers Healing" where he and his partner give intuition based energy healings.Today Paul supports his clients from a Mind Body Spirit approach.Support the show

In 1776, the US declared independence. Eleven years later, in 1787, delegates from 12 states (we're looking at YOU Rhode Island) got together in Philadelphia and wrote the Constitution. In between those triumphant moments, there was the Articles of Confederation, that “firm league of friendship” that most Americans probably know as something they had to memorize for a history test. HOWEVER The Articles of Confederation, while certainly not a highlight of the American experiment, explain a lot about the American Revolution, the ideas that defined the founding generation, and the ways those ideas changed in the first years of independence. In fact, you can't really understand the US Constitution unless you understand the Articles and why they failed. THEREFORE In this episode, Bob and Ben speak with Greg Jackson about this very topic. Greg is Assistant Professor of Integrated Studies at Utah Valley University and host of the podcast History That Doesn't Suck. We hope you enjoy our conversation on the Articles of Confederation! Professor Greg Jackson joins Tim to talk about what it takes to pass the American citizenship test, what's on it, and what all means. Do you think you could pass the test? You may be surprised. You may know Greg from previous episodes where we discussed George Washington, the history of the American Flag, or the history of the U.S. Capitol building. Greg is a historian and history professor at Utah Valley University. And he's the host of the very popular podcast called, “History that Doesn't Suck.” In this episode, we explore the test to become an American citizen. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Citizenship_Test_auphonic.mp3 Less than two years ago, The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation decided to conduct a test to find out just how much Americans actually know about their country, its history and what it means to be a citizen. The country failed. But let's be more specific. The survey found that two out of three Americans would not pass the test that's required to become a U.S. Citizen. First, a little background on that test. Before an immigrant to the United States can take the Oath of U.S. Citizenship, he or she must pass a naturalization test that's administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It's a two-part test. There is a civics test. And there is an English language test. While some accommodations may be made for age and physical limitation, applicants for citizenship are expected to demonstrate they can read, write and speak words in ordinary and daily usage in the English language. And they have to demonstrate that they have a basic knowledge and understanding of American history, government and tradition. So, when the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, conducted its survey, here are some highlights – or lowlights – of what it found. Only 13 percent, or almost 1 out of 10 Americans knew that the Constitution was ratified in June 1788. Most thought it was 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. 60 percent, that's 6 out of 10 Americans, did not know the countries the U.S. fought against in World War Two. More than half of those surveyed did not know how many justices are on the U.S. Supreme Court. There are nine. People who were 65 years old and older scored best with 74 percent answering at least 6 out of 10 questions correctly. Those 45 years old and younger did the worst. Only 19 percent were able to pass the exam. I know what you're wondering right now. You're wondering if you could pass the exam yourself.  Well, before you try to answer that, we decided this may be a good time to take the mystery out of the test. He appeared on FreshEd twice, so to honor his legacy here is his first appearance from February 8, 2016. -- Social movements produce a huge amount of intellectual knowledge. Yet, in many academic circles, this knowledge is overlooked. My guest today, Aziz Choudry, has spent most of his life working with social movements around the world. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University and visiting professor at the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation at the University of Johannesburg. His newest book Learning Activism: The Intellectual Life of Contemporary Social Movements was published in 2015 by the University of Toronto Press. All book proceeds will be donated to the Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal. Learning Activism is designed to encourage a deeper engagement with the intellectual life of activists who organize for social, political, and ecological justice. Professor Choudry is concerned with “making visible the dialectical relationship between ‘Research' and ‘organizing.'” I spoke with Aziz Choudry in mid January about his new book. https://freshedpodcast.com/azizchoudry/ -- Get in touch! This episode is a conversation with Jacob Torbeck. Jacob is a PhD candidate at Loyola University in Chicago's Integrated Studies in Ethics and Theology program. Jacob and I have crossed paths many times over the past 20 or so years, but have never gotten to know each other well. In this conversation, we talk a bit about his background, then turn to a host of other topics: Jesuits and liberation theology, the unity and diversity within Catholicism, Jake's faith and his reasons for pursuing theology as an academic discipline, teaching theology and ethics to college students, faith, and the relationships between faith and science, faith and institutions, and faith and today's party politics. Professor Greg Jackson joins Tim to tell the American story through the story of a building, the U.S. Capitol. From the day the cornerstone is laid by George Washington in 1793 through today, the Capitol building is the anchor for the American republic. Greg walks us through the Capitol’s halls and tells us the stories they can’t tell for themselves. This is our special annual Independence Day episode. Have a Happy July 4th! https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/U.S._Capitol_Building_auphonic.mp3 On September 18, 1793, George Washington laid the U.S. Capitol cornerstone at the southeast corner of its foundation to mark the building of the nation's most symbolically important building. President Washington and his volunteer artillery from Alexandria crossed the Potomac River and joined with troops from Virginia, Maryland, and the Federal City (current day Washington, D.C.). They formed a parade and everyone followed. There were speeches, a barbecue and much celebrating well into the evening. Greg explains what was on their minds on this first day where the new republic had a permanent home. Construction The Capitol houses the U.S. Congress—the House of Representatives and the Senate. Dr. William Thornton won a competition to become the initial designer of the building. He placed a smaller domed rotunda between the Senate (north) and House (south) wings. The building’s architects were many: Stephen Hallet (1793), George Hadfield (1795-1798), James Hoban (1798-1802), Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1803-1818), and Charles Bulfinch (1818-1826). The War of 1812 interrupted construction and nearly burned it to the ground, but rain prevented total destruction at the hands of British troops. By 1850, the growing United States warranted expansion of the U.S. Capitol building and so, construction began and continued throughout the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated under a partially completed dome. The U.S. Supreme Court was once housed in the Capitol building, as was the Library of Congress. Eventually, they would move to their own buildings while the Capitol would evolve. Greg tells the story behind the crypt in the center of the building, the old House of Representatives chamber, Statuary Hall, and some of the great stories and lore of the building itself. In 1776, the US declared independence. Eleven years later, in 1787, delegates from 12 states (we're looking at YOU Rhode Island) got together in Philadelphia and wrote the Constitution. In between those triumphant moments, there was the Articles of Confederation, that “firm league of friendship” that most Americans probably know primarily as something they had to memorize for a history test. SO In this episode, Bob and Ben speak with Greg Jackson about this very topic. Greg is Assistant Professor of Integrated Studies at Utah Valley University and host of the podcast History That Doesn't Suck. We hope you enjoy our conversation on the Articles of Confederation! About the Lecture: Over the past twenty years, the United States' practice of wartime detention has received a great deal of criticism and controversy. Yet, detention is a lawful, humane, and important part of armed conflict. Having long ago moved beyond early errors in its detention policies and practices in its current conflicts, the United States should re-embrace the detention mission in operation and doctrine as a strategic part of its conflicts with al-Qa'ida and ISIS. About the Speaker: Ryan Vogel is an assistant professor of law and national security and the founding Director of the Center for National Security Studies at Utah Valley University. Before coming to UVU, Vogel served at the Pentagon as a senior policy advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He began his career at the Pentagon through the presidential management fellowship program and was awarded the Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service in 2014. Vogel was the principal drafter of several key DoD doctrinal directives related to detention and detainee review processes. Vogel has taught international and national security law courses at American University, Brigham Young University Law School, and the Chicago-Kent College of Law. He completed an LLM in public international law, with a certificate in national security law, from the Georgetown University Law Center. He earned a J.D. and an M.A. in international affairs from American University and graduated from Utah Valley University with a B.S. in Integrated Studies.

Kelly Good studied at both the University of Michigan and Oakland University graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Integrated Studies in Music, Dance and Theatre with an emphasis on Health and Wellness.  In 2009 Kelly moved from her hometown outside of Flint, Michigan to the windy city of Chicago, Illinois in pursuit of a career in the performing arts. After appearing in several local Chicago area theatre productions including Phantom of the Opera, Kelly shifted her focus to continue to teach performing arts as she did while attending college.   She then decided to try her hand at natural fitness competitions while also earning NASM & AFAA group fitness and personal training instruction certifications.  Kelly quickly became a top performing instructor for popular a local Chicago gym for women, Flirty Girl Fitness, and simultaneously worked her way up the ranks to become a World Champion Pro Fitness Model.  In June 2017, Kelly required a bilateral foot surgery to correct genetic issues which were exacerbated by overuse in ballet and a fitness career. With both of her feet being surgically broken and corrected, Kelly was left with a painful restrictive 2 month recovery just to get back on her feet and walking again.  Despite this major setback she would still go on to be crowned the 2017 World Champion Pro Fitness Model with Ultimate Fitness Events (UFE) while competing against the top natural fitness competitors from around the world and was also awarded the first Miss Congeniality title by a popular vote among her fellow female athletes. Kelly now also conducts private performing arts lessons for voice, acting and dance in addition to coaching clients in fitness, nutrition, posing, and stage presence.  Kelly strives to help other athletes who enjoy the competitive fitness sport develop their strategies and has already assisted several others on their journey to achieving their pro status as well.  She has found that there is a need within the competitive fitness sport to develop the performing arts aspect which involves helping competitors pose in ways that display and compliment the hard work they have put into sculpting their individual physiques. Kelly has had numerous success stories in each area of her studies. Kelly’s lyrical opera student, Laura Bretan, was a Golden buzzer winner on America’s Got Talent in 2016. Laura started training with Kelly at the age of 8 years old, and worked with Kelly for two years prior to attending the show. Laura first won Romania’s Got Talent and then finished as a runner up for the grand prize on America’s Got Talent against Grace VanderWaal.  Kelly has overcome many personal struggles to which she feels has helped her overall success including an eating disorder, depression and a self-harm illness. She now works with other young women struggling through similar disorders, helping them better understand how to cope with these conditions, working on their relationship with food and improving their self-image. Kelly aims to continually educate herself and is an avid self-improvement buff.  She enjoys being able to actively teach others how to enjoy living in their own skin while working towards their goals in all areas of life all the while learning to love themselves unconditionally along the way! Social movements produce a huge amount of intellectual knowledge. Watch the full lecture by Dr. Amy Gutmann: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0saxaK0BTgc This fall, Penn launched a new undergraduate program in Integrated Studies. The program is designed around the idea that no single discipline or perspective can be applied to complex problems; instead, students tackle problems using multiple disciplines and approaches. Designed for freshmen who have been accepted as Benjamin Franklin Scholars (BFS), the new Integrated Studies Program (ISP) provides these students a rich and multifaceted introduction to a liberal arts education. As part of the program, three professors from the College—one from humanities, one from social sciences and one from science—will teach a single course focusing on one of the big themes from different perspectives. For example, a physicist might teach about the shape of the universe, while an English professor lectures on Milton's "Paradise Lost" and the cosmos in that work, and a political scientist teaches about the importance of understanding the larger world when considering political events. Penn President Amy Gutmann presented the inaugural lecture to the 80 first-year students participating in Integrated Studies at Penn. Tonights show, Interview with Charles A. Filius who is the author of the book: "Selections from On A Wing and A Prayer". I firmly believe that everyone is psychic. The secret is not only recognizing it but tapping into the source as well. I did not realize it; I did not acknowledge it and I certainly did not come close to tapping into it. I ignored it for so long that it finally had to tap into me. To say it "tap" is a gross understatement. It repeatedly clobbered me over the head with a series of rhythmic deafening thuds. That's the best way to get my attention since the word "subtle" is certainly not in my vocabulary. It began innocently enough by a 'chance' reading by renowned medium, George Anderson in August, 2001. (Click here for the inspiring details). What soon followed was discovering, and cultivating, my own natural abilities as an automatic writer and a channel. This new path lead me to extensive training at The Astrological Institute of Integrated Studies in Port Charlotte, Florida. It was there, under the guided hands of Sandy Anastasi, John Maerz and Ed Hicks, that I truly began to understand, and embrace, my potential as a psychic medium as well as a spiritual being. I assure you no one was more surprised than me! I have also had the honor of studying with renowned medium John Holland, as well as spiritual teacher & medium, Hans Christian King.
